Give yourself the best tools for the job!

You've got the skills to become the best golfer on tour, but you need the equipment to match if you want to win all the titles, so use our EA Sports PGA Tour best bag guide to help you out!

There is so much customisation within the new title that it can be a bit overwhelming for new players - especially if they don't have a good knowledge of golf.

Table of Contents

Ea sports pga tour best bag, club rundown.

Fear not, as we take you through the various clubs, specs and more to give you the best bag in EA Sports PGA Tour .

In EA Sports PGA Tour you have the ability to create up to five custom bags, each with a different assortment of clubs, giving you the right tools to tackle different courses.

As well as picking the right clubs to suit your style or the course, you can also change the degree of your driver and wedges. A lower degree will give you a lower loft on your shot, causing the ball to fly further and roll upon landing. A higher degree gives a higher loft, causing the ball to fly higher and stop faster upon landing.

When you start the game, all your clubs will have common and balanced specs, which you can then upgrade to improve power, accuracy, control and recovery.

BUY NOW: EA Sports PGA Tour

In creating your bag you want to make sure that all distances of shots are accounted for, so you can always be in the best position, using the shot type you want, not being forced into plays that might not work.

As a general rule, this means that each club should give a distance of around 10-15 yards difference from the next club up or down from it.

The exception to this is with your driver and wood, which will be your big hitters!

With that in mind, your best bag to start with should look something like this:

  • Pitching Wedge

If you have no prior knowledge about golf and need a quick summary of what each club is generally used for in EA Sports PGA Tour, then take note of this club rundown.

  • Longest club in the bag, typically used for tee shots on par 4s and par 5s
  • Designed to maximize distance off the tee
  • Used for long shots off the fairway or tee on shorter par 4 holes
  • Designed to provide distance and accuracy
  • A cross between a wood and an iron
  • Gives a shorter distance of a wood but more than an iron, with similar control of an iron
  • Can be used for hitting from difficult lies such as rough or fairway bunkers
  • Can be used to replace long irons for easier play
  • Designed to provide versatility in shot-making
  • Clubs numbered from 1 to 9, with lower numbers representing longer irons
  • Used for a variety of shots including tee shots on shorter holes, approach shots, and shots from the fairway
  • Designed to provide accuracy and control
  • Shorter irons (8, 9) are designed for approach shots to the green
  • Longer irons (3, 4) are designed for distance and lower trajectory
  • Used for short shots around the green
  • Typically have a higher loft than irons
  • Available in a variety of lofts, including sand wedge, and lob wedge
  • Designed to provide maximum spin and control for shots that require precision and touch
  • Used for rolling the ball on the green and into the hole
  • Designed for accuracy and control on the green

A big mistake some people are making in EA Sports PGA Tour is buying equipment in the store to improve their clubs.

Equipment does nothing to the stats, it is purely cosmetic. Although you want to look as slick as possible on the fairways, what you need to invest in to improve your abilities are specs!

You will see that there are varying rarities for each club and spec type, going from common, through uncommon, rare, epic and finally legendary.

The higher the rarity, the greater the stats, with some focussing more on a specific attribute area; broken down into power, accuracy, control, recovery or balanced.

In general, the pro signature specs are the best, giving a unique outlay of stats that match that golfer's technique - so look out for them when they pop up in the store!

BUY NOW: Best Jordan golf shoes 2023

You will need to buy specs in the store with Reward Points, which are earned by completing quests, with the legendary signature specs costing 18,000 Reward Points, with legendary specs costing 15,000.

As gaining Reward Points can be a bit of a grind, it is best to save up and go all-in for legendary and signature specs, instead of slowly upgrading your bag with uncommon, rare and epic specs.

Of course, it is a personal choice in how you want to upgrade your specs and it will change depending on your style, however, in general, you want to focus on the following boosts with each club:

  • Driver: Power
  • Wood: Power, accuracy and control
  • Irons & Wedges: Accuracy and control

You can also boost the specs of your ball, with power, accuracy and control all vital components. There are no specs for putters.

EA Sports PGA Tour 2023: Golf Bag and Club Spec Guide

Everything you need to know about getting better equipment.

Andrés

EA Sports PGA Tour 2023 allows you to heavily customize your golfing gear with its golf bag and specs systems.

In this guide, we’ll tell you how to make the most of these systems so that you have the best equipment possible!

How to Optimize Your Golf Bag and Club Specs in EA Sports PGA Tour 2023

ea sports pga tour best clubs

Before we start, we want to clear a common misunderstanding that new players make in this game: the clubs in the store are purely cosmetic and don’t boost your stats.

You can still get them if you want, but don’t buy them thinking that they will improve your stats.

Instead, you will want to buy Specs. You can buy them from the Specs tab of the in-game store, so you should save your money for them!

ea sports pga tour best clubs

Specs come in multiple varieties. These are the following, from best to worst: Pro, Legendary, Epic, Rare, Uncommon, and Common.

The Pro rarity is basically a variation of the Legendary rarity; both are gold-colored but Pro Specs are named after professional golfers and provide better stats.

As you might imagine, the rarer specs are much better but also much more expensive!

ea sports pga tour best clubs

Every Spec is also primarily aimed toward one stat, but that doesn’t mean that’s the only stat they boost. For example, this Legendary Accuracy spec also greatly improves Power, Control, and Recovery.

Luckily, you can see the stats before you purchase! You don’t have to buy Specs blindly while hoping for the best.

Additionally, you can get Club Specs by completing various Quests in Career Mode. If money’s tight, go complete some quests and you’ll hopefully get some good specs without dealing with the store!

After you’ve got some good Specs, you need to customize your Golf Bag to apply them.

How to Customize Your Golf Bag and Use Specs

ea sports pga tour best clubs

Your golf bags can be edited from the Equipment tab in the Golfer category of the main menu.

You can have up to 5 different golf bag presets at once. This allows you to quickly switch between different setups in the Play menu.

Choose which golf bag you want to customize so you can see every modifiable piece of equipment: the bag itself, all the golf clubs, and the golf ball.

ea sports pga tour best clubs

You can select any of them to modify them, which allows you to apply any cosmetics you own, but is also how you apply Specs to your clubs and ball.

Specs can be found on the rightmost tab when applying equipment modifications. You can navigate to it by pressing the bumper buttons on your controller or using your mouse on PC.

Specs that are already applied will have a green check mark on their icon . Hovering over any other spec will show you the stat difference, which is key to comparing them!

ea sports pga tour best clubs

Once you pick the spec you want to apply, you will get to select the loft for your clubs. This will greatly change how they behave, but the selection depends on your personal preference.

EA Sports PGA Tour: Does Buying Clubs Improve Your Stats?

Image of Ashley Anthony

EA Sports PGA Tour, the game where swinging is key to success and upgrading your Pro golfer enables the key. There are different ways to improve your golf game, and one would think upgrading from an EA Hammerhead to a Taylormade driver would improve and increase your driving range to get to the greens easily.

The most crucial part of golf is to get to the greens as quickly as possible and in the least amount of shots. With this in mind, many are asking the question, what improves when you buy new and better golf clubs?

EA Sports PGA Tour | Store | Drivers

To learn what happens when you buy a new driver, hybrid, iron, or putter in Road to the Masters, read below.

Shopping Around In the EA Sports PGA Tour Store

In the PGA Tour store, you’ll find all apparel, equipment, specs, and more. Here you will spend your Reward Points on purchases. Reward Points are accumulated through playing tournaments and completing challenges. There are golf clubs, ranging from drivers to irons to putters.

It is pretty expensive to purchase any of the items, as you will need a lot of Reward Points. Golf clubs are the same number of credits as buying a pair of Nike Airmax or a new golf bag, making the decision difficult. But what you need to keep in mind when shopping is, Reward Points come to you a lot easier when you are playing like a Pro.

EA Sports PGA Tour | store | Putters

Upgrading your golfer to improve your long and short game will allow you to play a better game of golf and receive more Reward Points quicker.

Related: Can You Fully Max Out Your Golfer in EA Sports PGA Tour?

Now, before you make any purchases, you need to ask yourself what is more important: playing like a Pro or looking the part? Firstly, the apparel is inviting and makes you think twice about your purchases. Secondly, if you do not know what you are doing, you could end up making the wrong decision.

Does Buying Clubs Improve Your Stats in Road to the Masters?

Sadly, buying top-of-the-range golf clubs or other equipment does not improve your hitting stats in EA Sports PGA Tour Road to the Masters. The golf clubs, batting gloves, cleats, and all accessories are just for cosmetics and nothing more.

If you plan on spending your points in the game, hold out on buying any apparel or equipment. These items can be obtained by completing challenges. Instead, use your Reward Points on specs, which are meant for upgrading your clubs’ attributes.

EA Sports PGA Tour | Store | Specs

Specs can also be obtained by completing daily, weekly, and other quests. This creates a way to save your points and progress steadily. How I played it out, I purchased almost nothing while trying to complete all sponsorship challenges and side quests to help improve my golfer faster.

EA Sports PGA Tour: 10 Best Golf Courses, Ranked

EA Sports PGA Tour features some of the golfing world's greatest courses.

The PGA Tour hosts some of the biggest talents in the world of professional golf on some of the most picturesque courses on the planet. While these courses may provide a scenic backdrop for spectators and competitors alike, they also present a challenge to the skills and patience of their participants. The team behind EA Sports PGA Tour aims to capture the aesthetically-pleasing locations and the unique-but-challenging features of the Tour's best courses.

Related: The Best Courses In PGA Tour 2K23

The golf course presents as much of a challenge for participants as their fellow competitors. The 28 courses in the game differ in their features and consequent challenges, giving each event a unique point of difference. Given the significant number of locations included in EA Sports PGA Tour , which of them is the cream of the crop for golf's premier competition?

10 Quail Hollow Club

Almost every year since 2003, The Wells Fargo Championship has been played at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Championship is one of the most prestigious on the PGA Tour and is known for its contributions to charitable causes, raising tens of millions of dollars to support incentives focussed on education.

The biggest test for players in EA Sports PGA Tour is the famous 14th hole, which begins a challenging section of the course affectionately dubbed the "Green Mile." Despite its reputation, players will be eager to overcome the five bunkers, lake, and narrow fairway designed to punish any miscalculations and identify themselves among the elite with a golf club.

9 TPC Sawgrass

TPC Sawgrass is one of Florida's premier golfing facilities. It houses two state-of-the-art 18-hole golf courses, one of which is their Stadium Course which has seen some of the world's best with a golf club compete in The Players Championship.

The course's most famous hole, the "Island Green," likens itself to a castle surrounded by a moat , with the green situating itself within a lake that is only accessible via one narrow passage of grass. While it will no doubt be a satisfying feat to achieve in the game, players will need a steady stroke to ensure their ball doesn't go for a swim.

8 Harbor Town

The Harbor Town course at the Sea Pines Resort in South Carolina puts less emphasis on the strength of a golfer's swing, but rather the finesse. The course is riddled with challenging obstacles in the form of trees and a plethora of strategically placed bunkers, but it will reward those who are creative and accurate with their shot-making.

The course is among the more narrow along the PGA Tour and is capped off with one of the most recognizable 18th holes in golf. Players will be eager to reward their efforts from the first 17 by driving their ball toward the famous red and white lighthouse.

7 Torrey Pines: North

San Diego, California is home to Torrey Pines, a 36-hole complex that houses two championship-level golf courses. The most picturesque of the two, the Northern Course, borders the state reserve and overlooks the Pacific Ocean, providing an endless supply of breathtaking scenery as players progress through each hole.

Related: The Best Golf Games Of All Time, Ranked

Torrey Pines' North Course offers challenges both on the ground and in the air, as its seaside location offers some wind resistance that will have players carefully considering the angle of every shot. Not only this, but the conditions on the course will also warrant thorough consideration of which club to use to minimize the number of shots to the hole.

6 Teeth Of The Dog

Combining the grace of golf with the charm of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic welcomes the PGA Tour at the Casa de Campo Resort with its course known as the Teeth Of The Dog. EA Sports capture the course's beautiful malice, as locals warn "The Dog" will bite back at those who test the course's challenges.

The course is among the best in the game to swing a club in due to its combination of challenging holes and stunning oceanic backdrops. The course includes 7 holes that hug the sea, including its 3-par beast of a 7th hole that contributed to the site's canine reputation.

5 St. Andrews (The Old Course)

Lovingly dubbed the "Grand Old Lady," Scotland's St Andrews is home to the oldest golf course in the world. The "Home of Golf" was once a final destination for pilgrims looking to pay homage to the country's patron saint, before becoming the location of the first golf game ever recorded in the 15th Century.

EA Sports PGA Tour effortlessly captures the Old Course's British charm and aura of history whilst also doing justice to the deceptively flat surface that will have players simultaneously pulling their hair out and wanting more. From the Swilcan Burn at hole 1 to the green at the 18th that has golfers right in the town again, St Andrews has it all.

4 TPC Scottsdale

The TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course in Phoenix, Arizona, generates one of the biggest attendance numbers of the entire PGA Tour, luring in the masses with its enormous stadium facility. Home of the WM Phoenix Open, the course is most famous for its stadium environment on hole 16, which provides a unique environment for spectators and competitors alike, bringing a one-of-a-kind atmosphere to the event.

This course is meticulously crafted to enable players to mimic the gladiators of old as they step into "the Coliseum" to a huge audience of eager on-lookers and golf fanatics.

3 Pebble Beach Golf Links

A course so beloved by golf fans that it was voted the most popular public golf course in America, Pebble Beach combines the trim beauty of a golf course with the sea air of the coast. It has hosted six US Opens, which is more than any other course in the country, and plays host to the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am every year.

Related: The Best Golf Video Games, Ranked (According To Metacritic)

The course will no doubt be a favorite for gamers wanting to experience swinging their clubs by the cliff on hole 8 or chipping themselves out of a bunker and onto the iconic hourglass-shaped green on hole 17.

2 Augusta National Golf Club

An extremely exclusive club , the Augusta National Golf Club boasts playing host to the only Major that is played at the same course every year: the Masters. EA Sports PGA Tour reimagines the beauty of this course and its 18 illustrious holes with detail that will have players as close to the action as one could be without planting their own feet in the grass.

The meticulous detailing of the course has the Augusta looking almost real, from the finely maintained grass to the assortment of floral beds throughout the site. Players will need to put the setting's pleasant aesthetics aside if they wish to see success in the Masters, as famous holes such as the Golden Bell as hole 12 will test not only the strength and accuracy of the club but also the player's ability to select the right club for the job.

1 The Riviera Country Club

As it approaches its 100th birthday in 2026, Los Angeles' Riviera Country Club has long-established itself among the best golf courses in not just the United States, but the entire planet. The charm of the course comes from its natural beauty, sitting on a backdrop of lush greenery and delicately supported by clean-cut housing estates along the hillside.

The home of the 2028 Summer Olympics boasts an incredible array of 4-par holes; however, the most recognizable feature on the Riviera's terrain is the unique bunker square on hole 6. EA Sports PGA Tour captures this one-of-a-kind course feature and allows players to approach the obstacle however they see fit, something that golfers outside the PGA Tour are not allowed to do.

EA Sports PGA Tour is available from April 7, 2023 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Authentic ball flight … EA Sports PGA Tour 2023

EA Sports PGA Tour 2023 review – serious players have much to master in EA’s return to the virtual fairway

Electronic Arts; PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S The controls can be tough to get the hang of, but the visuals are stunning, the commentary impressive and the play itself gives you all the challenge and realism you could want

A fter an eight-year hiatus from the world of golf simulation, Electronic Arts is back on the fairway, bringing its considerable licensing power and slick sports TV presentation skills with it. Featuring 30 courses, a large roster of current professionals, and a physics model built around the official TrackMan data for authentic ball flight measurement and swing analysis, this game is exactly what you’d expect from EA Sports – comprehensive, packed with options and deadly serious about the sport.

Those hoping for an accessible knockabout are going to be quickly disappointed. The new swing mechanic, which requires you to pull down on the analogue stick to bring the club back, then forward again to unleash your shot, takes considerable time and effort to master. There’s a slight lag between your input and the onscreen swing visual, which makes timing tricky, especially when you’re not going for a full-power shot. Consequently, you spend a lot of matches over-hitting wildly, and this isn’t helped by the fact that the transition on the stick from pull-back to forward has to be precise or your golfer just pulls a practice swing. The difficulty is compounded by the fact that there’s no real tutorial mode. Instead you get a Coaching Academy section in the Challenge mode, which has lots of little mini-games based around various elements of the sport – but these don’t provide tips or feedback, so it’s all trial and a lot of error.

EA Sports PGA Tour 2023

In the main Career mode, which lets you create a player then guide them through a competitive year (hopefully ending with a shot at the Masters), you start with hopeless stats and need to earn XP points to build your skills in driving, approach play, short game and putting before you have any chance of winning cups. It’s an RPG element that feels kind of weird within this very serious simulation, and it forces you to spend hours entering lesser tournaments and trying the hundreds of skill challenges to build up your XP and raise your stats. There’s a quick game mode that lets you jump into a round on any course with any player, so you do get to experience high level play from the outset – but if you want to beat Career get ready for a real golfing grind.

When you do start to get the hang of the controls, PGA Tour 2023 becomes an enjoyable and engrossing sim. The visuals are beautiful, with lusciously detailed courses, from Liberty National with its view of the Manhattan skyline to Pebble Beach where the holes edge along rugged cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. These courses don’t simply provide aesthetic contrast – they play very differently and require planning. Each hole demands that you tweak your swing, club and shot shaping depending on the shape of the fairway, the lie of the bunkers and myriad other factors. The commentary is also extremely good, with genuinely interesting and helpful observations, and excellent reactions to your play – I managed to land an incredible shot from a bunker 30ft from the flag and there was notable surprise in Rich Lerner’s voice. Together with the slick UI and swooping overhead cameras, EA has done a superb job of simulating modern sports broadcasting.

Alongside the Career, Challenge and Quick Play modes there are also various tournament options, including online matches against friends or the wider community. A range of daily, weekly and seasonal tournaments also allow you to earn XP and items for a limited period before they’re refreshed, so you’ve got lots of reasons to keep coming back. Unfortunately, the game features a loot box mechanic, rewarding in-game achievement with random packages of cosmetic goods and XP boosts. You can also earn in-game money to spend in the game’s outfit store, but those who can’t wait can buy the currency with real cash. Considering the money the Fifa series has made from micro transactions this is hardly surprising, but it sits uneasily in the more austere atmosphere of a golf sim.

This is a promising return to golf for EA Sports. It’s slow of pace, it’s tough to get into, and it’s a little staid and fuddy-duddy at times (most of the background music makes you feel like you’re on hold to a financial service call centre), but the accuracy of the ball physics, the huge range of shots and the highly tactical nature of the play gives serious players the challenge and realism they want. I wish there was a smoother on-ramp for beginners, or a much more basic arcade mode for those who want to thrash through a few holes with pals, but this is a sim after all and when it comes to sport, EA does not mess around.

EA Sports PGA Tour Review

ea sports pga tour best clubs

2023 marks the first year since 2015 that golf fans have been treated to an EA Sports video game, with Rory McIlroy PGA Tour having been released in June of 2015.

The game features an abundance of aesthetically pleasing golf courses with fantastic graphics and a loaded roster of elite golfers. Augusta National is a playable golf course for the first time in a video game since 2011 and doesn’t disappoint. The tricky green complexes, sloping fairways and pink azaleas make gamers feel like they’re playing in The Masters.

Swing Mechanics

The swing mechanics in the game are a bit tricky to figure out. It took me quite a long time to get a grasp of where I needed to pull the analog stick back to when making a full swing. My approach shots when over the green almost every time forcing me either to club down or make an abbreviated swing.

There are a great deal of new shot types which add realism to the game, but it can be a bit overwhelming trying to figure out which shot to use when the basic swing is so hard to get right to begin with. For advanced players, the abundance of shot types should be a welcome benefit.

The difficulty of the swing and figuring out how to use all of the different mechanics to play a round of golf was most definitely the biggest drawback of the game. Simply put, it will take a lot of time and effort to master EA Sports PGA Tour and those looking to pick it up quickly are in for a disappointment.

ea sports pga tour best clubs

Career Mode

Career Mode is far and away the best part about EA Sports PGA Tour. While it’s certainly a grind to build your player’s stats and XP up enough to be competitive in the events, it’s worth the struggle. The game has all four of the majors, which is fantastic and truly gives the player incentive to improve and play well.

The choices of new clubs and gear is expansive and offers all of the big brands, but gaining the XP to purchase them in conjunction with the difficulty of the game can be frustrating.

Career Mode also offers players an option to play alongside a computer controlled professional player, which gives the tournament a much more authentic feel. However, playing alongside a pro slows the pace of play down considerably. There’s an option for players to choose Quick Play” which speeds up the round and only gives players the chance to play the most important shots of the tournament. However, there isn’t an option to change a tournament to two or three rounds instead of four.

The Verdict

The Career Mode is enough to make EA Sports’ return to the golf game world successful. Access to all four majors, the ability to play at historic courses like Pebble Beach and Augusta National, and the deep roster of stars makes this game worth buying.

The swing mechanics and overall difficulty of the golf simulation will be tough for players to adapt to, but patience and determination will pay off. Once the time is put in to master the swing and different shot types, the experience feels like the real thing.

EA Sports PGA Tour 2023 is a great start to golf video games on next generation consoles, but there is undoubtedly room for improvement for the series in the future.

Phil Mickelson drops big retirement hint; Says LIV will grow the game ‘on a much more global basis’

ea sports pga tour best clubs

While speaking with Bloomberg , golf legend Phil Mickelson acknowledged that he is inching close towards retirement.

“I’m 53 now,” Phil said, “and my career, you know, it’s — if I’m being truthful, it’s on — it’s — it’s — I’m a — it’s towards its end.”

Mickelson added that one of his focuses now is helping other young players.

“Now, I would like to help others find the same enjoyment and fulfillment that the game has provided me. I’d like them to experience that as well.”

The six-time major champion credited LIV with reaching new markets in golf to help it grow.

“I think that’s exciting for everyone involved in the game because we are going to reach markets that we didn’t reach before. I think it’s going to inspire more golf courses, inspire more manufacturers selling clubs and equipment, but also inspiring young kids to try to play golf professionally. I just see that the game of golf is going to grow on a much more global basis because of the excitement and the presence that LIV Golf has.”

Mickelson is playing at this week’s LIV Singapore and shot a first round 72 (+1).

On Wednesday, Tiger made an appearance on The Today Show with Carson Daly and explained his daughter’s relationship with golf.

“Golf has negative connotations for her. When she was growing up, golf took daddy away from her. I had to pack, I had to leave, and I was gone for weeks. So, there were negative connotations to it. “We developed our own relationship and our own rapport outside of golf. We do things that doesn’t involve golf. Meanwhile, my son and I, everything we do is golf related.”

The nine-minute interview touches on plenty of other subjects, such as Tiger’s relationship with his late father, Earl.

Review: ea sports pga tour.

While it still needs more polish, EA SPORTS PGA TOUR is fun to play and EA shouldn't give up on the franchise.

For years, EA had its feet firmly planted for PGA games until the last generation started. Having Tiger Woods as the cover athlete every year was a draw alone. Much like the PGA Tour trying to find their player, EA tried with Rory McIllroy as a cover athlete and a lot of promise. The series was shortly abandoned and it took nearly eight years for the company to release a new PGA title. EA SPORTS PGA TOUR is the first true next generation golf title that is complete with the best aspects of what the PGA offers for fans. Unfortunately, despite hitting all the checkmarks to attract golf lovers, the overall experience lands in the rough.

Now that there's competition in the golf video game space, there are two clear ways to go thanks to the release of EA SPORTS PGA TOUR. One has more of a focus on a golf game with customization options that gets a roster filled with celebrities. The other, being this game, has a much more focus on specifically providing a true PGA Tour experience. This is highlighted most by offering the best PGA Majors and courses for fans of the sport. This starts with The Masters, which hasn't been available in video game form for ten years. There are thirty courses in total with two fantasy courses added with even more to come. Courses like Kiawah Island (complete with ocean sounds), Augusta National, Pebble Creek, Wolf Creek and more are all LIDAR scanned for realistic detail. This is the place to play the courses that fans watch on Sunday afternoons on CBS, which is no doubt the biggest draw for this game.

EA SPORTS PGA TOUR also includes 22 licensed playable golfers at launch. This includes both PGA and LPGA players and while you'll see the #1 ranked golfer in the world Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth and Lexi Thompson, for example, scrolling through the roster is underwhelming. Jon Rahm, who just won The Masters and has been a major player in recent years, is missing. Others like Rickie Fowler, and of course, Tiger Woods are not on the roster. What makes this worse is plenty of players show up on the leaderboards that are recognizable. EA is planning post launch roster additions and the availability here is at least solid enough currently. It's also nice to see that each golfer has a rating in the game and helps with local multiplayer matchups.

The major attraction to this game are these two aspects as the game goes a bit south in terms of its depth. The course selection is important, but the overall lack of customization options hurts. Players can create up to only four golfers with the goal of taking each one through a career and leveling them up to be competitive. There are also no course customization options either, but again with a course selection this deep of the best courses on the tour makes up for that as players will be able to specifically learn each course. In this way, the newest game throws back to those original EA PGA titles.

Creating golfers is limited, but the facial details are there. These golfers can be used in any mode, but this works best if you have siblings or friends who want to create themselves and work on getting their golfer up to par. Unfortunately, that will be a long road as the Career Mode included doesn't intertwine with multiple players and golfers can only unlock XP through the Career Mode. This mode provides the ability to choose to start in Amateurs, Korn Ferry Tour or jump right to the PGA Tour. There are quests to complete along the way, but these are more long term such as making cuts at Majors that provide XP boosts. The goal is to improve the golfer and other than playing through events, that's the jest of the Career Mode. While it's multi-year, that means XP becomes more difficult to obtain the more you level your golfer.

Upgrading golfers includes unlocking shot types as you allocate skill points to Power, Driving, Accuracy, Short Game and Putting. I will say taking out your low-level golfer and going back and playing with Scheffler is night and day, so upgrading is important. Rewards are also provided as there are a good bit (almost forty) of licensed clothing apparel and equipment. Swing animations, shot shapes and ball trajectory can also be customized with the golfer. Each PGA golfer actually has their own swings implemented into the title to better create separation and style from each golfer. The game offers twenty different shot types that are rated at different tiers such as Bronze, Silver and Gold with some Epic put in there. These twenty shot types are broken down between Driving, Approach, Short Game and Putting. The game doesn't do a good job of providing insights to what exactly each shot does, however, and the shot previews aren't consistent. This is where the problem with the gameplay begins.

Frostbite powers EA SPORTS PGA TOUR and from a visual standpoint, it's stunning and simply blows away the competition. What it lacks is the consistency in shooting and the ball physics. This may come down to the golfer rating of each, as playing with high level golfers seem to net a better result, but there are too many times where shot placement makes no sense. I had to enable the full shot preview to see where the game intended to actually put the ball as what the game provides in terms of a cursor isn't right. Rather than learning how to approach shots from a golf perspective, you're adapting to what the results of each shot will be and actually hoping for the best. The wind swirls and I didn't even realize this until I put the full shot preview on.

EA brought in analytics technology with Pure Strike Powered by Official PGA TOUR Shotlink and Trackman Data. This is to allow for realistic outcomes based on those individual unique golf swings that were mentioned above. What I question is why I hit chip or pitch shots straight on, but they still tend to go left or right? Or why I place the cursor in an area I want the ball to go, but it ends up shanked? What is great that EA brought back was the Perfect Hit animation on drives, Heartbeat Moments and the ability to spin the ball while its in the air. This time, however, there's a meter tied to how much spin can be put on certain shots. Don't get me wrong, the game is fun to play, but the inconsistencies in shooting create a lot of frustration. The issue with the overabundance of analytics doesn't make the game as approachable for casual players due to its difficulty and that frustration from shot inconsistency, and I'm only playing on Pro.

This game has been delayed and EA is still pushing post-launch content. There is a 3-click mechanic coming in mid-May for the title and with additional golfers and courses on the way, it really seems EA wanted to make sure this got out in time for The Masters. Although I will say I did enjoy having the tournament on one television and playing this game on the other. Other game modes include Challenges, Tournaments, Competitive and Social Online Matches and a Private Match for online friends only. The Challenges include updated live ones where you will take a PGA pro and relive moments. EA has already posted Masters moments from over the weekend, which is cool and adds some to the experience.

The online modes are lacking, though. The Competitive and Social modes are essentially the same thing, but the design is limited. There are no lobbies and no setup options; rather the game provides short holes at random courses to play. It supports up to sixteen players that will golf at the same time with the other players on the course. Unfortunately, the rooms only filled with a handful of people at the most. There's no crossplay which would open up the rooms. The Tournaments have players playing at their own pace to set a score much like the older titles. This is where the microtransactions in the game, however, come into play. The online play itself is consistent with no hiccups, and that's a positive.

The nearly-forty licensed products in the game are all simply aesthetics including the actual golf equipment. The Tournaments have BUY-INS, which is absurd. There are different tournaments that last longer and some are free, but the fact that some of these tourneys have buy-ins that require real money is concerning. Licensed clubs can be purchased alongside shafts, balls and more, but there's no attributes. If you want that Taylormade Driver, it isn't going to improve your golf game. It's simply a aesthetic and a big miss in the game as the competition offers different attributes for every club purchased as changing shafts and balls also affect shooting. These are also only meant for your created golfer so you can't put any of what you purchased on a PGA golfer. The otherside of this aspect is that players can't go in and just buy the best clubs in the game, which eliminates the pay-to-win idea. Lastly, EA SPORTS PGA TOUR doesn't require an internet connection to access quick play, but it does for everything else. There's no point to force this for the Career Mode.

Frostbite stands on its merits as EA SPORTS PGA TOUR is utterly gorgeous across the board. You won't find any low resolution textures anywhere and the courses are lifelike. Really the only aspect of the visuals to nitpick is that the trees don't move much when its windy and some far away visuals have objects pop in. Otherwise, the varying grass, water, reflections and basically everything else is top notch. The player models look detailed and the clothing has ripples and wrinkles that help add a level of realism, but the clothing also doesn't move with the player. The elephant in the room is that the game is currently capped at 30 FPS on consoles with a promise of a 60 FPS patch coming later. This would actually tremendously help gameplay as swings are currently timing-based.

The crowds are lively at each event and also manage to be detailed. Strangely, there are no crowds when playing online and the game is awkwardly silent. The overall presentation is different for each course and does a great job of creating a broadcast feel. The commentators help add to the atmosphere and do a solid job with dialogue. Little cues such as birds chirping, the sound of the ocean, planes flying by, etc all add to perfectly replicating what's watched on television during an event. The one thing missing is always the few people who yell things like "get into the hole" or something of the sorts, just that added layer of detailed audio you hear during events. One thing that majorly lacks in the presentation is the lack of replays and some score overlays. The lack of replays is bothersome if you're hoping to see that last shot you just made. Otherwise, this is a prime example of why sports games need more official television broadcast overlays.

Closing Comments:

The most welcome aspect of EA SPORTS PGA TOUR is the PGA aspect itself. Having the biggest courses on the tour with more to come is the driving force behind the game. Offering PGA Tour pros with individual ratings and some detailed separation with the shot animations and other analytics from Shotlink and TrackMan adds major diversity between golfers. The beautifully-detailed courses and golfers will attract any PGA fan. It's the lack of depth and the gameplay inconsistency that ultimately hurt the return of the franchise. Some of these issues can be mitigated in the future and adding 60 FPS will be a major addition on consoles. The Career Mode is shortsighted and the microtransactions with a focus on aesthetics and forcing players to spend actual money to buy into a tournament is disappointing. Adding to that is the requirement of an internet connection to access 90% of the game. The lack of customization options also hurts, but what EA SPORTS PGA TOUR offers best is a solid single player PGA game with the ability for excellent couch multiplayer. While this game teethers more on being a successor to Rory McIllroy PGA Tour rather than the Tiger games of years past, EA has brought in a good bit of those original design implementations and modernized it for today's hardware. While it still needs more polish, EA SPORTS PGA TOUR is fun to play and EA shouldn't give up on the franchise.

EA Sports PGA Tour review - Gold standard of golf

PGA Tour is the first EA golf game in eight years

the entrance to Augusta national golf course

Published: 14 Apr 2023 2:29 PM +00:00 Updated: 14 Apr 2023 2:29 PM +00:00

Golf is a hard sport. Since returning to it during lockdown in 2020, I’ve found myself saying “golf’s a shit sport” more than once as I somehow slice a drive into the only bunker on the first hole at my local course, but also celebrating as a second shot lands perfectly on the dancefloor.

Few golf games embrace that side of the sport as a real sim. Everybody’s golf, while great, was more about aesthetics, and 2K’s PGA Tour games are pretty accessible.

EA’s PGA Tour , which is the publisher’s return to golf after eight years away, is a golf game that stays true to the sport, and it gets most things right.

Tee to green

The swing mechanics are pretty spot on, hitting that sweet spot between tough to perfect and simple enough to gradually improve.

Rather than the three-hit points system you’ll see in the likes of Everybody’s Golf, EA’s PGA Tour asks you to swing back with the right stick to the right point and then swing back down as straight as you can manage.

the 13th green at Augusta national

Get the apex of your backswing perfect and nail the narrow window to be straight on the downswing and your shot will go close to where you aimed. It’s a satisfying, challenging, and easy-to-understand core mechanic. The downswing direction sure does take some time to get to grips with, though.

However, that’s not all you have to worry about. You need to consider the impact of your ball’s lie on your shot, how strong and in what direction the wind is blowing, how far the hole is above or below you, and whether the ball is above or below your feet.

All of those things, on top of the quality of your swing, determine the club you should use and where your shot will end up.

Of course, you’re not left completely to your own devices. You don’t have to be a weatherman or be able to determine distance to the nearest foot over 500 yards, with the game giving you all the information you need. You just need to consider how all those aspects will affect where the ball will go after you hit it.

Getting it right and nailing the green on a second shot on a par 5 or trickling in a chip from the fringe of the green is so, so satisfying.

Then, as you play more and more, visiting different courses from around the world, you become more consistent and more comfortable with taking risks when aiming for a great score.

The occasional issue with ball placement after hitting hazards and some putting line suggestions being a bit off aren’t enough to really frustrate. Golf is a frustrating sport at the best of times, but EA has done a good job of limiting it.

PGA Tour has a really fun learning curve as you make your way through the amateur ranks and up to the Masters. The balance in the difficulty is perfect.

a character taking their first shot in PGA Tour

There’s also an upgrade system that affects your ball striking in all situations. As you level up and spend skill points, you can improve your driving distance, approach control, putting accuracy, and many other things, all while unlocking new types of shot for your character.

The actual character creation tool is limited, which is disappointing, but the upgrade system once you start the career is another feature that keeps the actual golf feeling fresh.

There are also challenges to test your skills on while trying to earn rewards. They’re well-designed and varied, but they could use some kind of feedback loop to help you understand how to improve on them.

Content and Courses

PGA Tour is also the most visually impressive and content-rich golf game ever. The Frostbite engine makes every course look stunning. The lighting, which changes as you tee off at different times of the day, makes every fairway and green look photo realistic.

Playing the iconic Augusta National course while watching Jon Rahm win the Masters there last weekend, I couldn’t believe how perfectly the place had been recreated.

Image of the crowd and a player in PGA Tour

Having the ability to play some of the best holes in golf is brilliant, but I didn’t expect it to look so good.

The addition of crowds to the game’s 30 courses also drastically improves the experience, making each round feel like a televised tournament rather than a simple solo round. It’s something that’s been sorely missed from the golf game competition, so I’m glad it’s included here.

Whether it be alone as you work through the career mode, having so many courses to play, many of which are iconic ones from the real tour, is brilliant. Some are a lot more challenging than others, so your skills continue to be tested in different ways.

All in all though, PGA Tour is the best golf game to be released in a long time. I just hope I can continue to get better at it.

EA Sports PGA Tour Review - Hit The Links

  • First Released Apr 4, 2023 released

EA returns to the world of golf with a challenging and rewarding title that's let down by a couple of inconsistencies and an underwhelming swing mechanic.

By Richard Wakeling on April 12, 2023 at 10:55AM PDT

EA Sports PGA Tour is unlike any other golf game I've played. It still features familiar elements from the series' past--back when Tiger Woods was front and center--such as slow-motion heartbeat moments and climactic power shots. But after an eight-year hiatus from the world of golf simulation, EA has returned to the fairway with a more demanding recreation of the sport that's as much about feel as it is mastering the game's robust mechanics. With 30 courses covering all four majors--including The Masters at Augusta National--EA Sports PGA Tour has a plethora of golfing action to sink your teeth into. It's just a shame there are a few notable issues in critical areas that hold it back from greatness.

The first of these is the game's swing mechanic. If you've played a golf game before, the actual act of swinging a driver or 5-iron will be familiar. You pull down on the analog stick to bring the club back, then push forward again to unleash your shot. This has been a staple in golf games for a number of years now, and there aren't any alternatives at the moment--not until a three-click system is implemented in a later update. The issue with EA Sports PGA Tour is that there's a slight delay between your input and the on-screen visual. Your swing isn't 1:1, so there's an uneasy disconnect where you never quite feel like you're in total control. The general malaise of each swing doesn't help matters either, with the slow, clunky pacing and frustrating lag making it difficult to nail the timing and power of each shot. I eventually grew accustomed to these idiosyncrasies over time, but it never feels quite right and fails to capture the satisfaction that hitting a 300-yard tee shot should achieve.

To compound the issue, EA Sports PGA Tour also lacks any sort of meaningful tutorial. There are tooltips that pop up and cover the basics the first time you play, but these brief snippets barely scratch the surface of everything going on under the hood. Instead, the game has a suite of challenges that happen to include a Coaching Academy. This is the best place to start, even if these challenges still neglect to offer any tips or feedback to help you along the way. What you get is a variety of contextual situations covering different aspects of the sport, from putting downhill to dealing with elevation changes and the multitude of shot types on offer. There's a lot of trial and error involved, but the repetition of replaying each situation does give you a greater understanding of how everything works. It's not a very user-friendly approach, but it sets expectations and is genuinely helpful in an unconventional way, even if it might prove frustrating for some. Plus, completing these challenges also earns you XP that can be used to improve your created character.

EA Sports PGA Tour

EA Sports PGA Tour's career mode sits front and center, starting off with your no-name golfer competing in the qualifying school before moving on to the amateur Korn Ferry Tour. The ultimate goal is to reach the PGA Tour, which can be done either by winning one of the many four-round courses or by placing highly enough in the Korn Ferry rankings come season's end. You can expedite this process by opting for a quick play mode where you only need to play a few holes rather than an entire round, but I think playing full rounds is the way to go. That's mostly because it gives you ample time to fine-tune your skills, learn the courses, and gain a better understanding of the game's mechanics. There's also a palpable sense of progression that comes from leveling up your golfer. Earning XP lets you build your skills in driving, approach play, short game, and putting, while progressing each attribute also unlocks more shot types, giving you additional options when preparing to send the ball careening toward the green.

Fortunately, the Coaching Academy includes challenges for each of the game's myriad shot types, giving you the opportunity to see how each one functions before playing competitively. There's value in understanding the differences between a runner, spinner, or knock-down shot, but knowing when to utilize each one essentially comes down to a matter of feel. In this respect, EA Sports PGA Tour resembles the sport of golf more accurately than any other game. There are a number of variables at play for every single shot, to the point where there's a real thought process behind each swing. You have to choose the right shot type and club for each situation, adjust for wind and elevation, judge how much power you need to put into the swing, and account for the distinct ways each course plays--tweaking your shot shape depending on the shape of the fairway and lie of the bunkers. The game helps to some degree by displaying relevant information such as wind speed and distance, but then you're left to your own devices. This can be frustrating, particularly early on when you're still learning the ropes and your golfer's attributes aren't up to snuff, but once everything clicks, EA Sports PGA Tour plays an engrossing game of golf that can be incredibly rewarding.

Much of this is down to the courses themselves. Every single one of the 30 officially licensed courses is staggeringly beautiful and offers an authentic attention to detail, whether it's Liberty National and its view of the Manhattan skyline, the waves crashing against the sand at Pebble Beach, or the alligators lurking in the water at TPC Sawgrass. Almost every course is iconic on some level, and they've all been faithfully rendered and recreated, right down to individual blades of grass. The absence of a course designer is a tad disappointing, but unlike PGA Tour 2K23, it's not something that feels like a necessity because there are already so many 18-hole delights. The courses are the game's main character, providing the kind of variety and depth to stave off any tedium. Mastering a golf game's mechanics is usually the key to success, but EA Sports PGA Tour's courses demand much more from you. Each one plays differently, whether it's the roll of the green or the width of the fairway impacting your decision-making. It genuinely feels like you're playing against the course rather than the shot meter.

EA Sports PGA Tour

The physics model, which is built around the official TrackMan data for ball tracking and swing analysis, is excellent for the most part. However, there are some inconsistencies when it comes to ball rollout. On The Old Course at St Andrews, for instance, the rollout is overly extreme to the point where the ball will roll uphill at pace, even through heavy rough. This forces you to account for situations that shouldn't really occur. Once you land on the green, putting is also equally aggravating for different reasons. Each green contains a grid that uses moving beads to show you the direction of the break. The problem is that sometimes this data is inaccurate and the break is opposite to what the beads are showing. The putt reader alleviates this somewhat by showing the ideal path to the hole, but this is also misleading at times. With no reliable way to gauge the breaks, putting is a lesson in irritation that will only be rectified if these issues are fixed in future updates.

Outside of career mode, EA Sports PGA Tour also features various tournament options for use in online matches against the community. If you want to play against friends, however, stroke play is the only option, and there's a disappointing lack of alternating play for those who want to see each other tee off. A range of daily, weekly, and seasonal tournaments give you another chance to earn XP and items like club specs and in-game cash for a limited time before they're refreshed, so there's an incentive to keep coming back. That in-game cash can be spent in a store of rotating items including various cosmetics, which holds some appeal because the character creator is extremely barebones. Outfitting your golfer in branded clothing can be fairly costly, though, which is explained by the inclusion of microtransactions for those who would rather buy the in-game currency with real money. This isn't a surprising move, but it doesn't exactly vibe with the serene mood.

After almost a decade away from the sport, EA's return to the golf course is a promising one. The range of shot types, courses, and tangible variables make for a methodical and tactical game of golf that's both challenging and rewarding. It stumbles by barely introducing players to its robust mechanics, while a laggy swing and inconsistent putting are notable flaws on what is otherwise a fantastic golf sim. EA Sports PGA Tour represents a solid re-entry for the series and lays down a sturdy foundation for an auspicious future.

  • Leave Blank
  • Each shot must be carefully considered, taking into account a number of variables
  • All 30 courses are wonderfully recreated and each one feels distinct
  • Offers a tough but satisfying simulation of golf that's close to the real thing
  • The lack of tutorials makes for a rocky start
  • Swing mechanics are delayed and create a disconnect
  • Putting information is frequently misleading
