gilligan's island ferry

This tiny mangrove island is surrounded by pristine sandy beaches and a lazy current that makes it possible to swim the perimeter of the island with little effort. The gentle shallow waters and picnic areas make it a perfect place for children and families alike. The island is a haven for birds, so bring your binoculars.

gilligan's island coral

The island is totally uninhabited even though it used to be heavily visited during holidays and on weekends. It offers great sights of the mainland’s mountains, coast, and of Guánica’s other attractions such as the Dry Forest. After the 2020 earthquakes, the island’s dock and infrastructure suffered much damaged. There are currently no facilities open to the public.

Copamarina Resort offers a variety of scenic cruises from daytime to sunset. One of them is a Beach Cruise around Gilligan’s Island. Feel free to contact the hotel for more information. Before 2020, there were some local boats and companies that transported travelers to/from Gilligan’s Island. If you were a guest of Copamarina Beach Resort, they used to have a private boat that ran exclusive trips to/from the island. Past private tours included snorkeling equipment, unlimited snacks, beverages, a light lunch, and terrific guides on board.

Knowing Puerto Rico

Gilligan’s Island: everything you need to know to enjoy your visit

Gilligan's-Island

Puerto Rico, perhaps everyone’s favourite island, is well known for its blue skies, clear surrounding waters, good food , and great culture. It is a treasure trove of stunning natural attractions that not only captivate locals, but tourists too. One of such attractions is Gilligan’s Island, which is the feature of this article.

Gilligan’s Island is a tiny island that is part of the Biosphere Reserve of Guánica, Puerto Rico. It is popular amongst the locals and many tourists for swimming, snorkelling, beach-time, and kayaking. Gilligan’s Island is officially known as Cayo Aurora.

It is surrounded by a healthy mangrove system and is well known for being: Gilligan’s Island, a snorkeler’s haven. It is blessed with crystal clear waters and schools of tropical fish. It even has a few places that have live and healthy coral. What a delight!

In this article you will find lots of facts and information, as well as tips that may be useful if you make up your mind to visit Gilligan’s Island (which you probably will by the end of this piece!)

How to Get To Gilligan’s Island

When going somewhere new, it is always a good idea to be well prepared. Navigating a foreign area can be especially challenging at times. That is why this article is here to help. A little aid goes a long way. Here, is how to get to Gilligan’s Island.

Gilligan’s Island is one of the most beautiful offshore Caribbean locations . This tiny island located off the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico in the town of Guánica (as mentioned before). There are some local boats and companies that transport travellers to or from Gilligan’s Island. If you happen to be a guest of Copamarina Beach Resort, there is a private boat that runs exclusive trips to/from the island (how fancy). Alternatively, you can opt to get to the beautiful island straight from Guanica by kayaking for roughly about 20 minutes.

You can take Route 333 and go past Cana Gorda, after which you make a right turn after passing Copa Marina resort. A little bit down on the right, is the San Jacinto ferry launch. Going further,  and following the signs will lead you to MaryLee’s by the Sea, a perfect place if you want to rent kayaks or get their motorboat ride over.

Logistics for Going to the Island

Here are some useful things or logistics to bear in mind when going to the stunning Gilligan’s Island.

Gilligan’s Island is open daily from 9am – 5pm. Ferries operate within these hours and can take you to or from the island. The first trip that leaves to Gilligan’s Island is from 9 to 10 am and the return trip is at 5 pm. It’s closed on Mondays (except holiday Mondays).

Renting a kayak will cost you about $15 per hour or $35 per day for double kayaks, and $10 per hour or $25 per day for single kayaks. On the other hand, if you take a motorboat, it may cost about  $8 to $10 per person to take you over to or back from Gilligan’s Island.

In addition to the above, there is an hourly ferry that departs from San Jacinto Restaurant (located just after turn onto route 333) for about $10 per person round trip (you will have to pay additional money for things like coolers or chairs, and consider taxes that may cause price increments- so remember to budget properly ). This restaurant will deliver a lunch to you on the island if you so wish. In case you want to contact them, their phone number is 787-821-4941.

What to expect at Gilligan’s Island

It is always great to have a fair idea of what to expect beforehand in pretty much every situation- especially when visiting someplace new. Due to this, we have prepared a little insight that you might find useful when you take the trip to the gorgeous Gilligan’s Island. So, without further ado, here is what to expect at Gilligan’s Island.

It has a few very dainty or small, sandy beaches, but it is mostly covered with mangrove trees. There is a small beach on the north-west side of the island that has a roped-off swimming area that is marked with buoys to protect swimmers and snorkelers from watercraft. It is good to remember that there are no life guards so swimming will be at your own risk.

You can expect to find some lovely coral formations and the place a perfect snorkelling area. The water that surrounds the area is crystal clear and warm. The bottom is sandy and people can swim all around and through the mangrove channels.

There are a number of picnic pavilions that are quite close to each other on the northern side of the island. You may also be lucky enough to find some of them with BBQ pits, changing huts, a bathroom, and trash cans.

In addition to this, there is a pier for boats to tie onto when loading/unloading passengers.

It is good to remember to bring bug spray or lotions along and apply generously as there are tons of ravenous mosquitoes that are sure to make a meal of you.

There are only a couple trails through the trees and very few open areas where you could set up your beach camp. You can spread out your beach blanket on the small beach, just on the right of the pier and enjoy a picnic or do some sunbathing.

The sea floor is covered with underwater hills of finger coral which will give you lots of pretty sights when you snorkel. There are a decent number of fish here such as puffer fish, barracuda, and big red starfishes- just like you see on television.

You may also notice a few fishermen in boats, conch hunters and spear fishermen in the reef areas where you snorkel.

Gilligan’s Island is obviously a fantastic place to visit and make holiday memories that leave a smile on your face forever. Hurry on down and experience it for yourself as soon as you can. You will not regret it!

Gilligan’s Island

Ponce & South Coast

Gilligan’s Island and nearby Isla Ballena (Whale Island) are all part of the same set of small mangrove islands off the tip of the Caña Gorda peninsula and are technically part of the dry-forest reserve of Bosque Estatal de Guánica . Neither is too sandy, but both offer good sunbathing and passable snorkeling, and both get quite popular with day-trippers.

The ambitious can reach both islands via kayak; rentals are available at the Copamarina Beach Resort and Mary Lee's by the Sea for US$20 per hour or about US$40 per day, or you can catch the ferry in front of Restaurante San Jacinto every hour, barring bad weather.

If Gilligan’s is packed, pony up a couple more dollars to the captain and try the less-visited isles of Ballena. The isles are closed to the public on Monday – apparently to give them a chance to recover from the influx of tourists over the previous week.

There is a sign that says "NO SWIMMING" but take a chair and a couple drinks and just sit. You cant stop watching the waves splash over the rocks and come up on the beach. Definately do not take kids because they will only be tempted to swim. Read more Written 30 January 2024

  • Ashley L 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome two days of touring. Just what we wanted We were able to take two tours earlier this month with Carlos. They were both private and in setting up the tours Carlos was great to work with and we settled on using the SUV. The SUV was great for our family that included two kids. For the old San Juan tour Carlos let us know the day before there were going to be some potential protests so helped and adjusted the time. Both days Carlos was waiting at the hotel to pick us up. The old San Juan tour was perfect - Carlos was a great guide and provided us with details of the history of PR and made it real with anecdotes from his own family and experiences. He also was able to answer our many questions. We had the right amount of time walking around and seeing the forts. The second day we did an all day nature tour. The first stop and beach were phenomenal - the views of the waves and climbing over the rocks to look out on the ocean were a highlight and this was not crowded at all. Carlos also took the time to ensure we ate on our lunch schedule and ended up at a very clean, tasty, and authentic local spot where he helped us navigate the menu. Driving through the middle of the island and all the ups and downs provides great views and at the waterfall was a good balance of a short hike and being rewarded with a pretty cool experience the whole family enjoyed. We then went to another are along a river with a huge rocks and petroglyphs and got in the river too. On the way back we had a few options but decided on visiting a black sand beach. Through the two days Carlos was friendly, knowledgeable, engaging and was very good to the entire family including the kids. He also knew quite a lot about the history of the hotel the El San Juan we were at. These two days were exactly what we wanted in terms of exploring, history, sightseeing and nature. • jclin10 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Incredibly informative tour — thanks to Carlos! Our guide, Carlos, was so kind and incredibly informative about the history of Puerto Rico, all the way from the lives of the original indigenous people, all the way to modern-day Puerto Rican politics, as well as the culture, food and geography. He showed us the two major forts, took us to one of the original creators of the pina colada and shared lots of stories about colonial Puerto Rico and its years as an American territory. Our 11-year old daughter and 10-year son were captivated, and we really enjoyed our time with Carlos. Read more Written 27 November 2021
  • Slaws40 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Cousin's Day Trip We booked a trip with Carlos of MBTION who was very accommodating. We wanted to do a day trip; however, everything was sold out so we booked this tour with Carlos who adjusted the location for us so that we could do the private tour to one of the islands. Transportation was included which was pretty decent. It was a black passenger van. It was comfortable as well. The weather was great so we had a pretty good time. We diverted from doing the bioluminescent because some of the girls were fearful of being on a small boat and in the water so a tour at night wouldn't have worked for us. I appreciate them accommodating us to give us what we wanted. They also provided us with the kayaks. Due to Covid we had to bring our own snorkeling gear which I purchased at Amazon. We brought our own alcohol. The tour provided us with water and the frozen drinks in the packs. We were supposed to get lunch or snacks those were not provided, we stopped at Burger King for lunch; didn't care for this part of the tour. There were other private boats, people who had jet skis that you could have renters for an unnecessary amount of money so we passed on that. There was also a Dj and a nice crowd partying in the water. Water isn't deep so if your short no worries you can stand in the water. We paid additional money don't remember how much but it wasn't much for the float thingy thing. Overall it was a fun day. Definitely a nice vibe. Would recommend. Was unable to add pics for some reason. Read more Written 8 September 2021
  • Slaws40 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Lot of disappointed Ladies My group and I a group of 11 did the Rainforest without the hiking with Carlos's guys. The company was MBTION. Thumbs down: The vehicles were poor in quality. They were personal vehicles of the drivers. One of the drivers had a decent SUV and was pleasant in that he allowed us to drink and eat in the vehicle. He also played the music we requested. The other driver had a van that broke down a few times. He didn't allow drinking or eating in his vehicle. Considering the drive was extremely long we should have been able to eat. The drivers were also not careful in that they were speeding as they went around twists and turns this was a major fear factor to us girls. The waterfall itself was okay it definitely wasn't worth the long drive from San Juan to where it's located. It's like once you arrive your like this is it... after the long drive you make the best of it at least I did the other girls not so much. It was just one waterfall nothing else that's it and if your not adventurous you won't climb those slippery rocks to get to the darn waterfall. If your a photo opt kind of person after you get that one good photo shoot you'll be bored. This has to be your thing in order for you to somewhat enjoy it. Oh and those drinks and lunch they offer please. We didn't have any lunch and we didn't stop anywhere for food and the drinks are those pouches from the gas station. Thumbs up: Carlos was pleasant and indicated that he addressed our concerns immediately with the drivers. We were late getting ready for the excursion due to our flight. Do not book an activity the days you arrive (lesson learned). The drivers patiently waited and accommodated us despite the delay. If the drive was 15-30 minutes away and you can do it on your own I would recommend but to pay for this activity it's not worth it. Read more Written 27 August 2021

  • 818anniez 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles An unfortunate chain of events My friend and I were on holiday and decided to book a nice tour of Old San Juan and wanted a private experience. First, there was a lack of communication from the tour guide regarding the pickup. We were at the designated pickup point on time, but when we tried contacting them, they had already left and told us to meet at the Capitolio building, of which there were actually two in the city. We went to the wrong one and had to pay extra $25 to get to the tour. In addition, our guide had a family emergency but took out his frustration on me and gave me a bad attitude on the phone throughout our communication. However, when the tour began, he was very knowledgeable and personable. He was very nice and answered all of our questions. However, the tour was supposed to be two hours long but it felt like only one hour, despite the traffic. After the tour we still gave a tip, wished his family well, and asked him to organize other tours for us. There was no response. Thus, after I gave my review on Viator, he actually texted me and said my review was not reflective of the tour and told me to change it. I feel like it was borderline harassment. • crackzola 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Spectacular waterfall in the rainforest; only a short hike Carlos was an excellent tour guide, very knowledgeable and professional. We thoroughly enjoyed our private tour that allowed us a visit to a rainforest off the beaten path. It was not the same rainforest in El Yunque where all the other tour groups go to. Instead being on a private tour with 11 ppl it was great to be able to go at our own pace; which made the the 1.5 hour drive well worth it. The higher price for a private tour, not surrounded by other tours and people, and swimming in and seeing an amazing waterfall all to ourselves was just fantastic. MBTION's off the beaten path tours are definitely unique and we felt like VIPs. We know this as we also booked a private boat tour to swim in the bio bay in Le Perguera with MBTION as well. Gilligan’s Island

For my birthday this year, Damiano and I, with a few friends, visited Guanica to check out Gilligan’s Island and what an awesome adventure it turned out to be!

Gilligan’s Island is very beautiful, a great place to swim, snorkel and even paddle! (More on that later). It’s a very small island about a mile off the coast of Guanica and a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike! The island is managed by Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural Resources and is part of the Biosphere Reserve of Guanica.

The area is largely covered by mangroves and some corral so it’s a great place to snorkel as the water is crystal clear. Be sure to bring a cooler for water, lunch and snacks and lots of bug spray!  There are picnic pavilions, BBQ pits, restrooms and changing areas but no shops or restaurants so come prepared.

To get here you can rent kayaks, take the ferry, hire someone to take you over or even paddle as the waters are pretty calm! Stay tuned on our Facebook page and blog as we are considering the idea of offering paddle board tours to this beautiful little paradise.
