Nusa Penida Tour: The Perfect day trip from Bali

Nusa Penida Tour: The Perfect day trip from Bali

Nusa Penida is the little gem of Bali. Penida island is part of the Nusa Islands , is the biggest of the 3 but until now the least developed. By visiting Nusa Penida expect white-sand beaches with silky blue water, 200-meter high coastal cliffs drop, and yet untouched nature. It is recommended to either visit the island by a one-day Nusa Penida Tour or a 3-day Nusa Penida trip .

Things to see on a Nusa Penida Tour

During a Nusa Penida day tour, you can either explore the west or east coast of Penida Island. West is more popular since it is closer to the harbor. East is at least as beautiful and has fewer tourists. If you prefer to see both sides, it is better to do a 3-day Nusa Penida Trip .

This Nusa Penida travel guide explains both tour types so it will be easier for you to choose from.

West Coast Nusa Penida Tour

The west coast of Penida island has beautiful sights like Angel’s Billabong and Kelingking Beach . Combine this with Crystal Bay, Peguyangan waterfall and Broken Beach to have a day filled with incredible viewpoints and jaw-dropping nature. It’s also possible to book a day tour leaving from Bali in advance.

Tip: It’s also a great option to switch Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong for Tembeling Natural Pool .

Kelingking beach

Kelingking beach is 100% sure the most spectacular place on Nusa Penida. White sand and a piece of land shaped like a dinosaur head. The view from the top is incredible but be prepared if you want to hike down to the beach. This hike down is a 45-minute incredibly steep path.

Nusa Penida is full of spectacular shaped locations. Broken Beach is one of them. A 45-minute bumpy ride from KelingKing takes you to this spectacular gate.

penida west tour

Discover the beauty of West Nusa Penida , where dramatic coastal cliffs, pristine beaches, and rich marine life are waiting to be discovered.

After traveling in Bali for 14 years and even living on the island, I’ve been to Nusa Penida countless times. You can easily visit on a day trip from Bali, however, I highly recommend you spend at least two full days here.

Nusa Penida is larger than it looks, so to avoid rushing, set aside one day for the west side and one day for the east. If you’re limited on time, this is the perfect 1-day itinerary to cover all the highlights of West Nusa Penida where the boats from Bali arrive.

Nusa Penida is the largest of the three Nusa Islands, set just 25 kilometers off the coast of southern Bali . Nusa Ceningan is the smallest, and my favorite is the middle one called Nusa Lembongan .

To give you an idea of the size of Nusa Penida, you could drive to the eight most popular attractions without stopping, in just under 5 hours. Or you could walk from Crystal Bay to Broken Beach in about 4 hours, a distance that looks very short on the map.

And that’s why I recommend you divide the island in two and focus on the west side during your first day. If you choose to do east and west in one day, you will spend most of your time in the car.

How to get to Nusa Penida

There’s no airport in Nusa Penida, so the closest place to fly into is the international airport in Bali. The best way to get to Nusa Penida is by taking a fast boat from Sanur Habor in Bali. The boat ride usually takes around 40 minutes, and several operators are offering daily schedules.

Keep in mind that it can be a bit difficult to get on board the boats in Indonesia, often without a ramp. So I can’t recommend this for people with mobility issues.

🌟 You can check price & availability here >> Fast boat from Bali to Nusa Penida

The best way to get around Nusa Penida largely depends on personal preference and comfort level. Renting a scooter, or motorbike as the locals call them, is a popular option for those who are comfortable navigating bumpy dirt roads and want the freedom to explore the island at their own pace.

I love to ride a motorbike on Nusa Lembongan , however, driving in Nusa Penida was a whole other story. The island is much larger than I thought, let’s just say I have never gotten lost so many times as I did in Nusa Penida. At one point Google Maps guided me into a village meeting where I was quickly and sternly asked to leave. Yikes!

I find that the easiest way is to ask your accommodation to pick you up from the harbor and arrange a scooter for you. Alternatively, you can just rent one directly at the harbor. It usually costs around 75,000 IDR a day, but you can often get a better deal if you rent for longer.

Remember that you need an international driver’s license when driving in Indonesia, and make sure your travel insurance covers you.

With a private driver

On the other hand, if you’re not comfortable riding a motorbike or want a more comfortable and convenient option, I recommend renting a car with a driver.

When I don’t feel like driving by myself, I usually book this customizable tour . You have the driver for 8 hours and can set your own itinerary or follow the suggested itinerary that covers all the highlights in West Bali, such as Kelingking Beach, Broken Bay, and Angel’s Billabong.

Remember to pick option 2 if you’re already in Nusa Penida and option 3 if you’re doing a day trip from Bali.

West Nusa Penida 1-day itinerary

This itinerary covers all the highlights on the west side of the island. I recommend starting with the viewpoints and photo spots, then ending your day in Crystal Bay where you can snorkel and lounge on the beach before having dinner at sunset.

West Nusa Penida travel guid, view of Kelingking Beach

Kelingking Beach is the most popular attraction in Nusa Penida, due to the cliff resembling a T-Rex dinosaur with a foaming mouth. The beach itself is nestled at the bottom of the steep cliff, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the turquoise waters and pristine white sand below.

Due to its popularity, I recommend Kelingking as your first stop on your West Coast itinerary. If you get there for sunrise or about an hour before sunset, you can take photos without having to stand in line.

Make sure you check the weather forecast before you go, to get the full experience you should aim for a clear or lightly clouded day.

penida west tour

In addition to enjoying the view from above, you can also hike down to the beach. Half the path is fairly easy, however, once you start descending the cliff wall it gets very steep and slippery in some places.

It took me around 45 minutes each way , with just a few stops to catch my breath. If you’re not in the best shape or have some kind of heart issues, please don’t attempt the hike. It gets insanely hot during the day and I found it to be more strenuous than I first thought.

penida west tour

The beach is really beautiful, and it’s a magical feeling to stand down there surrounded by these towering cliffs and powerful waves tumbling towards you.

But Kelingking Beach is not swimmable. Both the waves and currents here are much stronger than they look, and you can easily be swept out to sea. If that happens, it will take a while before someone comes after you.

People have drowned, fallen from the cliff and died from heart complications after the hike. I think I read somewhere that more tourists die in Nusa Penida than any other place in Bali. So be careful!

penida west tour

Everyone wants to see Kelingking, which I totally get. But there’s another spot located very close that offers equally amazing views, called Paluang Cliff . It’s just a 5-minute drive from Kelingking, you can see the T-Rex in the background there.

Paluang is not as popular as Kelingking, which makes it a great alternative. Lately, these Instagram photo spots have been popping up all over Nusa Penida, just like in Bali. And you’ll find many of them here, such as the boat thing above, a nest, a white hand, and a swing.

Since I haven’t shot any photos here yet, I had to source a stock photo that you can see above. I recommend you skip these photo spots and rather just focus on the beautiful view. We don’t want to see any more of these things ruin the natural landscape.

Blue stairs, small waterfalls and temple at the bottom of a cliff by the ocean at Peguyangan Waterfall in West Nusa Penida.

Peguyangan Waterfall , also known as Guyangan, is the southernmost attraction on this list, located about an hour’s drive from Crystal Bay. The name is a little misleading because you won’t find a large “traditional” waterfall here, but rather a few streams coming from pipes.

The main reason for visiting Peguyangan is in my eyes the spectacular views from the blue stairs built onto the steep cliff wall. It is especially beautiful right before sunset, as you will have the sun behind you. Perfect for a photoshoot.

At the bottom of the 700+ steps, you’ll find the reason why the stairs were in the first place, a temple, shrines and rock pools. Make sure to walk all the way past the highest temple, down the stairs with the flowing water and along the edge of the cliff to a turquoise infinity pool where you can enjoy a refreshing dip. Just please be careful, it is slippery!

View of Broken Bean on Nusa Penida, a rock arch with greenery on top and blue water underneath. Girl in a red dress walking on top, on a day trip to Nusa Penida during her two week Bali itinerary.

Next on this West Nusa Penida itinerary are Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong , located within a couple of minutes of each other. Broken Beach, known locally as Pasih Uug, is a circular cove of turquoise water where I’m guessing the roof caved in.

The name “Broken Beach” is derived from the natural arched bridge that allows the ocean water to flow in and out of the enclosed pool. Access to Broken Beach involves a short walk from the parking area and you can walk all around the cove. Just please don’t get too close to the edge.

penida west tour

Broken Beach is mainly a photo spot and you can not access the beach or enter the water here. The waves are rough and the drop down from the top is higher than it looks. So just enjoy the beauty of the area, get your photos and continue to Angel’s Billabong.

If you look closely at the ocean you can be lucky enough to spot several Manta Rays here. The mighty creatures are known to congregate in this area.

Nusa Penida visual travel guide - Indonesia beyond Bali - Angel's Billabong

Angel’s Billabong is a natural tidal pool that was formed by the rough ocean waves. The name Billabong is an Australian word that means a small, secluded body of water that is isolated from a larger body of water.

The water in Angel’s Billabong is crystal clear and ranges from yellow to green and turquoise in color, making it one of the most picturesque spots in Nusa Penida. To fully enjoy the beauty of Angel’s Billabong, you should visit on low tide. During high tide, the water level rises and covers the pool.

During our first visit we did not realize that even during low tide, rogue waves can suddenly crash into the pool and sweep you out to sea. That has happened before and people have died here. Since we shot this photo, they have put up signs that strongly advise against entering the pool.

Nusa Penida just off the coast of Bali in Indonesia

This is a shot from our very first day on the island going back to Bintang Bungalows after a day at Crystal Bay. It’s no secret that I love palm trees, so Nuda Penida was like paradise to me. Lush green nature and rows of majestic palm trees everywhere.

Set aside a little time to spend here as well, because if you’re anything like me you’ll probably want to stop for photos all along this road.

West Nusa Penida - View of Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay in Nusa Penida is a beautiful beach with clear blue water and soft white sand set against lush greenery and a field of palm trees. It’s a great place for swimming, sunbathing, and just enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

The bay is also one of the most popular for snorkeling and diving because of the colorful coral reefs and diverse marine life. I’ve even seen dolphins here one time. You can rent snorkeling gear on the beach, just keep in mind that the currents are strong here even if the water looks calm.

The photo above was shot from the headland on the west side of the beach, just look for the stairs. You can even walk to Pandand Beach just next door from here, which takes about 20 minutes.

West Nusa Penida - Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay Beach has relatively small waves, yet the locals occasionally attempt to surf the left side. You will see surfboards scattered along the beach, which I thought was weird at first because it was so flat. Often you can also join in on a volleyball match in the flat area behind the beach.

There are small warungs where you can purchase refreshing drinks, coconuts, and basic food.

🌟 If you mainly want to go snorkeling, check out this amazing full-day tour departing from Bali. Experience Instagram highlights such as Kelingking Beach and Angel’s Billabong, snorkel and swim with the mantas. So much fun!

Pandan Beach, a small sandy cove, set between two lush headlands, next to Crystal Bay, one of the best places to visit in West Nusa Penida.

Pandan Beach is a hidden gem just next to Crystal Bay, I’ve had it all to myself both times I’ve been there. There are actually three beaches in a row separated by hills, the third is named Puyung Beach.

As I mentioned above, you get there by going up the stairs on the west side of Crystal Bay. Follow the path for about 20-30 minutes and don’t forget to enjoy the view along the way. You can continue from here to Puyung Beach, but since I was wearing flip-flops I never attempted that hike.

There’s a small shack where a local man is selling drinks near the entrance, but aside from that, the beach is all yours. Enjoy!

If you have time, enjoy a sunset dinner at Amok Sunset Restaurant close to Crystal Bay. There is a pool and many different seating areas to choose from, inside, the sundeck and some tall treehouses.

It’s the perfect spot for a sunset photoshoot. Sunset time in Nusa Penida Bali can be anywhere from 6:00 pm to 6:45 pm, depending on the day and month. I recommend getting to Amok before 5:30 pm to beat the crowds.

My favorites on the menu are the pulled rib tostadas, cheese bites and chicken fingers. They also have a wide selection of mocktails and cocktails.

If you make a reservation , they will pick you up and drop you off after dinner at no cost. Just keep in mind that the music is sometimes loud and they often have DJs during the weekend.

Where to stay in Nusa Penida

As mentioned above, you can easily visit West Nusa Penida on a day trip from Bali or Lembongan. However, then you have to spend most of your time in a car, the distances are long. And the island is so beautiful that I recommend spending at least two if not three nights here if you can.

Bintang Bungalow, one of the best places to stay in West Nusa Penida.

If you decide that one day in Nusa Penida is just not enough, I recommend finding a place to stay close to Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay on the west coast. My favorite budget accommodation option is Bintang Bungalows , located right in the middle of the two popular snorkeling spots.

As you can see above, you get your own super cute and highly-rated bungalow with air-conditioning and a semi-outdoor bathroom, and a beautiful pool area right on your doorstep.

If you have a roomier budget, be sure to check out Atalaya Villas Nusa Penida . Omg, I have no words. This place is an Instagrammers dream. I wish my bedroom at home looked like that!

Two of the villas boast their own private infinity pool overlooking a sea of palm trees below. The common pool area is just as beautiful with tipi-like day beds and a bar serving up frozen margaritas. Perfect after a day of exploring west Nusa Penida.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, to visit Nusa Penida you have to pay a tourist tax of 25,000 IDR/adult and IDR 15,000 IDR/child when you arrive at the harbor.

If you plan to snorkel, dive and swim in the Nusa Penida Marine Protection Area, you have to pay another fee of 100,000 IDR/day or 200,000/month. This fee is already included in most tour packages.

Nusa Penida experiences a drier climate than Bali, but the best time to visit is still during the dry season, which typically runs from April to October.

During this period, the weather is generally sunny with minimal rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the island’s natural beauty.

However, it’s important to note that Nusa Penida gets very busy during these months, so my personal favorite time to visit Penida, and Indonesia in general, is February to April. That’s when is beautifully green after the rainy season , but with fewer crowds.

Can Nusa Penida be done in 1 day? Yes, but you won’t be able to see everything. To explore the most popular attractions without feeling rushed, I recommend you spend at least 2 to 3 days on the island.

Nusa Penida’s rugged terrain and limited infrastructure may require additional time for travel between locations, so planning for a few days ensures a more relaxed and fulfilling visit.

The tap water in Bali is not considered safe to drink due to potential contamination with bacteria, viruses, and other impurities.

The infrastructure for water treatment and distribution may not meet the same standards as in some other countries, increasing the risk of waterborne illnesses.

To avoid Bali belly I recommend only drinking bottled water or water that has been properly filtered or boiled.

My favorite bottle for travel, backpacking and hiking.

You can fill it up anywhere, LifeStraw filters bacteria, parasites, chemicals and microplastics.

For every Life Straw product purchased, a child in need receives safe water for an entire school year!

🌟 LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle

It all depends on what you’re after, as Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida are very different.

Nusa Lembongan is known for its laid-back atmosphere, advanced surf spots , beautiful beaches, and excellent diving and snorkeling, making it a popular choice for those seeking a relaxed island getaway with a range of water-based activities.

On the other hand, Nusa Penida is hailed for its rugged, less-developed landscapes and towering cliffs, much like Bali’s Uluwatu area. Nusa Penida also has world-class snorkeling and hiking opportunities. So if you’re after a more active holiday, choose Nusa Penida.

In my two-week Bali itinerary I have included both, so be sure to check it out!

And lastly, here is a little overview of my camera gear . To be honest it’s nothing that fancy. I spent quite some time researching mirrorless cameras before I decided on the  Olympus om-d e-m10 mark , and I couldn’t be happier with my choice!

It’s so easy to use and the Olympus app connects the camera to your phone so you can use it as a remote. So helpful if it’s only you and your  tripod trying to get the shot. And it doesn’t hurt that it is so pretty to look at, a black and silver retro design.

For lenses, I sometimes use the 14-42mm that came with the camera, but for the most part, I use my  fixed f1.8 25mm  which creates the most stunning photos with blurry backgrounds. And if you’re a solo traveler you should definitely get yourself this  Gorillapod . You don’t want to drag around a large tripod everywhere, so a Gorillapod is your best friend!

Hi Charlotte,

First of all, I wanted to tell you your website is very useful! I’m very happy I found it 🙂

I’m going to Bali for 15 days, I have already been there but never visited NUSA PENIDA. How many days should we stay here? Is this island better than GILI’S? “less touristy” than Gili Meno? I really want to find nice beaches with less tourists as possible!!!!!! 🙂

Many thanks!!!!

' src=

22. March 2017 at 22:06

Thank you Monica, I’m happy to hear that 🙂 Meno is the least touristy of the Gili Islands, but I did feel there were even fewer tourists on Nusa Penida. Maybe because the island is much bigger than Meno. There aren’t really that many easily accessible beaches on Penida, so for that Meno might be better. But if it is those white-sand paradise beaches you’re after I would recommend you to go to the south coast of Lombok. It truly is paradise! So many beaches to choose from that you will most likely find one you can have all to yourself. Mot fast boats stop in Lombok before the Gilis so it doesn’t take that much longer to get there either 😉

The photos you have captured are absolutely stunning! I’ve yet to visit even Bali, but it looks like Nusa Penida will have to be included on my list as well. Was it easy to get around on a scooter?

23. March 2017 at 16:26

Thank you Tina! Not as easy as on Bali and Lembongan. Some of the roads are good and some are really bad. But then again there is very little traffic, so you can take your time which is nice 😉

I’ve been planning to visit Bali since ages. Now, Nusa Penida is in my list too. All thanks to your stunning captures! Absolutely love your post and your blog. Sleek and stylish. <3

Ahhh every one of your posts makes me more and more excited to be going to Bali in May!! Thank you for sharing all the beautiful photos and information. We are staying at Nusa Lembongan for 5 days, do you happen to know if it’s easy to get a boat from Lembongan to Penida?

28. March 2017 at 18:38

I’m so happy to hear that Tanya! 🙂 And I’m glad you’re staying for 5 nights on Lembongan, one of my favorite places. Yes you can easily get a boat to Penida. I think we paid 200k Rp one way for a private boat from the yellow bridge. Just ask at your hotel the night before when and where the boat departs from. But keep in mind that Penida is much bigger than Lembongan so you probably won’t be able to see it all in one day if you drive by yourself. There are many organized trips you can join or just get a driver 🙂 Happy travels!

23. September 2017 at 17:58

Thanks for sharing, I am in love with Nusa Penida and can’t wait to explore. How many days do you think I’ll need between the Nusa islands? I was thinking 2 in Lembongan and Cenigan and 2 in Penida.

27. September 2017 at 22:05

Thanks, Caitlin, I’m so happy to hear that! Because of the bad roads, you won’t be able to see all the attractions on Nusa Penida in two days if you drive a motorbike by yourself. We had four days and didn’t manage to cover everything, but then again it was raining quite a lot. Also, remember that it’ll sometimes take about half a day getting there from Bali 🙂

Nusa Penida Day Trip from Bali: Complete Guide

Located about a 30-minute boat ride from Bali, Nusa Penida is the largest of the three Nusa islands and definitely feels like paradise on earth!

With so many things to see and do on the island, it can be hard to see everything on a day trip. For this reason, I recommend sticking to the west side of Nusa Penida, which is home to some of the most unique attractions.

From breathtaking viewpoints to T-Rex-shaped cliffs overlooking stunningly blue waters, a natural infinity pool, and pristine beaches, a day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali is an absolute must!

In this blog post, I’ll walk you through exactly how to plan an epic Nusa Penida day trip, including the best places to visit, how to get there from Bali, how to get around the island, tour suggestions, and other helpful tips.

Planning a Nusa Penida Day Trip

If you prefer to visit Nusa Penida as part of a guided tour , you have the option between a group or private tour. Both will take you to Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, and Crystal Bay.

If you have the budget, I highly recommend booking the private tour as you’ll be able to customize your itinerary and choose how long to spend at each attraction.

Below are a few recommendations for Nusa Penida day tours from Bali:

Another option is to book a snorkeling and sightseeing tour . After a pick-up from your hotel in Bali and a boat transfer to Nusa Pena, you’ll spend the first half of the day snorkeling at four different spots, namely Manta Bay, Gamat Bay, Crystal Bay, and Wall Point. After lunch, you’ll then visit all the top attractions on the west coast.

DIYing your day trip to Nusa Penida

For those who don’t want to visit as part of a tour, you can easily customize your day trip. Below you’ll find all the best places to visit. Make sure to follow the same order if you want to skip the crowds and maximize your time at each attraction.

Kelingking Beach

The first place I recommend visiting during your day trip to Nusa Penida is Kelingking Beach . This is because it’s the most popular attraction on the island and thus the most crowded. Plan to get there at least before 9.30 a.m to avoid the crowds.

The view from the top of the T-Rex shaped cliff offers a breathtaking panoramic view and the white sand beach below is absolutely stunning! It’s no doubt the most beautiful photo spot in Bali .

Most people only visit the viewpoint area but if you’re fit and not afraid of heights, you can also hike down to the beach.

Note that the hike is quite hard due to the steep steps but well worth it for a chance to see the beach up close.

There’s no entrance fee except for a small parking fee of IDR 5k.

Angel’s Billabong

The next stop is Angel’s Billabong , a natural infinity pool located about a 40-minute drive from Kelingking. The pool boasts crystal-clear water and is definitely a unique spot to swim in (during low tide only!).

When the tide is high, gigantic waves crash into the pool, making swimming extremely dangerous. There have been a few accidents before so make sure to always follow the guidelines and only go into the pool when swimming is allowed.

Again there’s no entrance fee except for a small parking fee of IDR 5k.

Broken Beach

Another unique place to visit is Broken Beach . It’s located within the same area as Angel’s Billabong and can be reached on foot in less than 5 minutes.

Here you’ll find a little cove surrounded by tall cliffs except for the natural arched bridge that allows water to flow in and out. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to go down to the beach but you can still admire the view from above.

Manta Ray Viewpoint

If you turn right towards the cliffs about halfway in between Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach, you’ll find the Manta Ray viewpoint. If you’re patient enough, you can spot Manta Rays swimming in the ocean below.

Crystal Bay

The final stop on this Nusa Penida day trip from Bali is Crystal Bay. Surrounded by rows of palm trees, Crystal Bay is the perfect place to relax after a long travel day.

It’s also a prime spot for snorkeling as the bay is full of fish. I booked a snorkeling tour when I was visiting Nusa Lembongan and we stopped at Manta Point and Crystal Bay. I even got the opportunity to see some huge Mola Mola fish on the tour.

Just a heads up though, don’t expect a pristine white sand beach like you would see at Kelingking. Crystal Bay is rocky in places and the waves can sometimes be rough.

Palm trees and colorful umbrellas on Crystal Bay in Nusa Penida

Honestly, it wasn’t my favorite beach but it was still nice to watch the sunset there. There are a few restaurants here as well as a couple of street food stalls along the beach.

If you have time, I also recommend hiking to Pandan Beach , which is more secluded. The trail can be found by taking the stairs on the left side of Crystal Bay.

There’s no entrance fee for Crystal Bay except for a parking fee of IDR 5k.

How to get to Nusa Penida from Bali?

If you’re not joining a tour, you’ll need to arrange transportation to Nusa Penida on your own.

You first need to take a ferry from Sanur in Bali. You can easily book your ticket online or go directly to Sanur Harbor. You’ll find several boat operators at the harbor but keep in mind that you might need to wait in line if you’re visiting during high season.

The boat will then drop you off at Toya Pakeh Harbor and the next step will be to hire a taxi with driver , join a guided tour , or rent a motorbike .

waves crashing along Kelingking beach

Note : The roads in Nusa Penida aren’t the best and are full of potholes! Only attempt to ride a motorbike if you’re highly experienced as it can be dangerous driving on these roads.

While most people choose to visit Nusa Penida as a day trip from Bali, you can also take a boat from Nusa Lembongan . You can buy boat tickets near the Yellow Bridge on Nusa Lembongan ( click here for the location ) for about IDR 50k.

Nusa Penida Island In Bali: Travel Guide & How To Visit

The beautiful, exotic Nusa Penida island lies just 25 kilometers from Bali, the most famous tourist destination in Indonesia.

Nusa Penida is a much smaller island than Bali, but it has some of the most amazing scenery in the entire Bali province (which it’s part of).

We’ve visited Penida more than a dozen times over the years, but it never gets old. This island is definitely one of the most beautiful places to visit in Indonesia .

The island can be visited on a day trip from Bali (same day return), but I think it’s better to stay and spend at least a few days sightseeing. There are so many good photo spots, hikes, and other things to do in Nusa Penida!

This travel blog will explain what to do in Nusa Penida, how to get there, where to stay, best transport options and tour packages, and some of the top sights to see. I’ve also included a handy Nusa Penida island map for trip planning!

First of all, if you’re on a tight schedule or want to skip the extra steps involved in arranging your own trip to Nusa Penida, GetYourGuide has prearranged day trips to Penida , complete with hotel transfer, fast boat tickets, island tour, and same day return to Bali.

These tours visit some of the top sights in Nusa Penida island, including Kelingking Beach, Broken Bay, and more. We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of day tours and activities around the world, and they’re great! Highly recommended.

Where Is Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida is a small island located southeast of Bali, Indonesia. The distance from Bali is about 25 kilometers (15 miles).

Penida has two small neighboring islands sitting right next to it called Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, and together these are known as the Nusa islands, but Nusa Penida has become the most famous of the three because of its scenic cliff views and stunning beaches.

How To Get To Nusa Penida

From Bali, the only way to reach Nusa Penida is by speedboat or ferry, with the speedboat journey taking about 45 minutes or so. There’s no airport in Nusa Penida, so the closest place to fly is the international airport in Bali (DPS). You can shop for flights to Bali at Skyscanner.

There are a bunch of speedboat companies in Bali making the trip to Penida daily, and they all depart from Sanur Beach at various times. If you’re staying in Ubud, Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, or elsewhere in south Bali, you can also drive over to Sanur and catch a boat. Some boat companies include a shuttle service from these areas in their total price.

I wrote a complete guide on how to get to Nusa Penida with one of these speedboat companies if you want to go there independently and arrange everything yourself. It’s more economical than booking a tour package, but also a bit more complicated.

The other option is booking a day tour to Nusa Penida with a Bali-based tour company. This can be a good option if you’re on a tight schedule or want to skip the hassle.

Visiting Nusa Penida Island – Tourist Fee

Since 2023, there’s now an entrance fee for tourists arriving by boat at Nusa Penida, and it’s intended to pay for better infrastructure on the island.

You’ll pay this in cash when you first get off the boat in Penida, and the fee is 25k Rupiah for adults and 15k for children. It gives you entry to all three of the Nusa islands: Penida, Lembongan, and Ceningan.

This ticket also gives you entrance to all of the main attractions and beaches on Nusa Penida, so you don’t have to pay a second fee at Kelingking Beach anymore, for example.

Overall, it’s a positive change, because in the past you had to whip out your wallet and pay a small entrance fee at every tourist spot in Nusa Penida. That was a bit tiresome. Nowadays, you pay once at the harbor and you’re done.

Transport: How To Get Around On Nusa Penida

Even though Nusa Penida is a much smaller island than Bali (with about 4 percent of Bali’s land mass), it’s still not exactly tiny. You can expect to spend hours driving around if you want to see the best sights on each corner of the island.

Just like in Bali, you have two main transport options for exploring Nusa Penida: motorbike rental (self drive), or hire a car and private driver.

Many of the roads in Nusa Penida are still very rough and narrow, so I don’t think motorbikes are a good idea here, although lots of people seem to do it with no issues. Remember to wear a helmet, honk your horn before hills and blind turns, and be prepared to pull over to the side to let cars pass. There’s not a lot of room on the road.

When I visit Nusa Penida I’ve always rented a car with driver (you can book here ) because it’s safer and more comfortable, and the prices are only a bit higher than what you’d pay in Bali for a full day of driving.

Scooters are also easy to rent from your accommodation (or other places) in Penida, and you can expect to pay about 75k Rupiah (~$5 USD) per day with a full tank of gas.

For short taxi trips (like hotel transfers to/from the dock) you can usually arrange those on the spot or with your hotel, although they’re not very cost effective.

Unfortunately the Grab and Go-Jek ride hailing apps are not yet available in Nusa Penida (only Bali), but maybe that will change eventually.

What To Do In Nusa Penida

• kelingking beach.

The Kelingking Cliff is the most famous view in Nusa Penida, and probably one of the most iconic views anywhere in Bali.

This is an incredible ‘T-Rex’ shaped rock sticking out over the ocean, with perfect turquoise water splashing around it. The first time you look over the edge of the cliff and see this view, it really is breathtaking!

After you’re done admiring the scenery at the Kelingking Cliff, there’s also a path to go down to the beach at the bottom.

The hike down to the beach is a major workout, a bit scary, and takes at least two hours roundtrip, but you’re rewarded with one of the best white sand beaches in Nusa Penida Bali.

• Paluang Cliff Viewpoint

Everyone goes to Kelingking Cliff, but there’s another spot located very close to it with its own amazing scenery, called Paluang Cliff. It’s just a 5 minute drive from Kelingking.

Paluang may not be as well known as Kelingking, but that’s part of the appeal. It’s a great alternative spot that gives you views of the Kelingking T-rex from the other side, without the crowds.

There are swings and photo platforms at the Paluang Cliff, plus a Balinese temple with a quirky car shrine, called the ‘car temple’ of Nusa Penida.

• Broken Beach

For most visitors to Nusa Penida island, one of the first stops will be Broken Beach. This is a cool circular cove formed in the rocks, complete with a leftover arch.

This area is also one of the popular hangout spots for the manta rays, so you’ll most likely get to see some rays floating around in the sea nearby.

The bottom is filled with turquoise water from the waves coming in, and there’s even a small white sand beach. You can’t actually go down to the beach, just admire from above, but what a cool view it is!

There’s a few old local legends associated with this place that say it was created either by a giant’s footsteps or by an angry sorcerer.

It’s definitely a very unique kind of formation that I don’t think I’ve seen anywhere else in the world.

• Crystal Bay

One of the popular spots on the west side of Penida is Crystal Bay. This is a good hangout or suntanning spot, and it has plenty of food and drink shacks for refreshments. Snorkeling gear can be rented here, or you can just sit around and chill out while eating some chicken satay.

The great thing about Crystal Bay is that it’s one of the best spots to catch the sunset in Penida. Last July, I went back here with a buddy and we sipped Bintangs with our toes in the sand while the sunset came down over the rocks on the coast.

The great thing about Banah Cliff Point is that it actually has half a dozen different view points along the cliffs, and at each view point you can walk right up to the edge of the cliff and look down at the waves crashing on the rocks.

From these cliffs you can usually see a bunch of tiny manta rays and speedboats floating around on the ocean below. You can also see the Banah rock, a doughnut shaped rock sticking out of the ocean. Great stuff!

My favorite feature of this beach is the awesome sea cave that opens up to a view of the huge cliffs on the coast, but this place is also becoming popular for the Tembeling natural pool, which you can take a dip in and relax.

The access to this beach is a bit tricky, but it’s one of our favorite spots in Bali!

• Atuh Beach

This is one of the nicest beaches on the south end of Penida island. Unlike Suwehan Beach, Atuh is not a secret and there are sunbeds, beanbags, and a couple of nice food and drink shacks here.

The highlight of Atuh Beach is probably the big elephant shaped rock in the ocean (locals say it looks like a stiletto), and the big variety of sea life that can be seen trapped in the rocks at low tide.

• Nusa Penida Treehouse (Rumah Pohon)

Have you ever wanted to sleep in a wooden tree house and wake up to the sounds of the ocean? Here’s where you can do it. The room and bed are very basic, but the views and location are out of this world.

You’ll fall asleep to the sound of geckos chirping in the trees, and wake up to an incredible sunrise over the Raja Lima islands, with dolphins and manta rays swimming and jumping in the distance.

• Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach, named after the pointy diamond shaped rock on the beach, is another utterly incredible “cliff beach” on the southeastern coast of Nusa Penida island.

It’s accessible since late 2018, when a path down to the beach was carved into the side of the cliffs. I’ve even seen some wildlife occasionally, from monitor lizards to dolphins and manta rays.

This place is also becoming popular thanks to the scenic swing, where you can take pictures while swinging between two palm trees over the beach.

• Teletubbies Hill

The center of Penida island has these big round hills named after the background scenery from the Teletubbies kids show.

They look kind of like the Chocolate Hills in Bohol Philippines , and using a drone here gives you some unique perspectives.

If you come here during or just after the rainy season (roughly December to April), then the hills are a perfect green color.

Between April and May, the hills are a more yellow color, but still neat to see. During the summer however, the hills will turn dry and brown, so they won’t look as nice.

• Suwehan Beach

Looking for a hidden beach with perfect white sand and turquoise waves? Suwehan is one of the best hidden beaches in Penida.

The hike down to the beach takes about 30 minutes and it’s exhausting, but very worthwhile. This is one of my favorite places in Penida. There’s even a cool pointy rock that looks like a Christmas tree.

This beach is a hidden gem that still isn’t included in most Nusa Penida island tour packages, but you can get there with a scooter or car charter. Careful, because the road is quite rough.

• Suwehan Tree House

In 2018, the locals built some tree houses at the top of Suwehan cliff. There’s four of these tree houses now, and you can stay the night in them!

Don’t expect luxury, but there’s an outside shower/bathroom and a small food shack for ordering meals, and the beds look comfy.

The best part is that you have a stunning view of the ocean and cliffs, and it’s just a short distance from Suwehan Beach!

• Goa Giri Putri Temple

This is a Hindu temple inside of a big limestone cave, located on the east side of Penida. To reach it, you have to climb more than one hundred steps to the top of the hill.

After crawling through a tiny hole in the side of the mountain, the inside opens up to a huge cave about 300 meters long, with high rock ceilings!

Hindu ceremonies are still performed here, but it’s also open to tourists. Exploring this cave is an interesting experience, for sure.

• Nyanyad Beach

This is a mostly unknown beach on the south end of Nusa Penida, with a small temple and giant hills on both sides of the beach.

The road to Nyanyad Beach is a bit tricky to find, but well worth the effort. Google Maps will try to steer you onto a wrong road that leads to a lighthouse.

Once you reach the parking area for Nyanyad, the hike down to the beach only takes 15 minutes, with concrete steps all the way, and the beach has perfect white sand!

This spot is another hidden gem that isn’t included in most Nusa Penida island tour packages, although you can get there with a scooter or car charter.

• Peguyangan Waterfall

If you want to try a sketchy, remote Nusa Penida hike with steep paths to get your adrenaline going, this one is for you.

Peguyangan is a small waterfall and natural swimming pool at the bottom of some cliffs on Nusa Penida island, and you reach it by climbing down hundreds of steps on a bright blue stairway.

It’s not for the faint of heart, but the ocean and cliff views here are incredible, which is why I’d rate it as one of the best hikes in Nusa Penida.

There’s even a neat little ultra scenic hotel at the top of the cliffs called Waterfall Inn , with stunning views of the whole area.

Best Nusa Penida Photo Spot

It’s hard to pick the best Nusa Penida photo spot, but I’d say it’s probably a toss-up between Kelingking Beach and Diamond Beach . Both are amazing.

Two other great photo spots in Nusa Penida would have to be Suwehan Beach and the Nusa Penida treehouse . These are stunning, and Suwehan is still pretty underrated.

Best Nusa Penida Beaches

If white sand is the main thing you’re looking for in Bali, then you’ll want to check out my complete Nusa Penida beach guide, which has a list of all of the very best Penida island beaches .

Obviously there are the famous beaches like Kelingking , Diamond , and Atuh , but there are also quite a few others that are not so well known.

Nusa Penida Hike List

Probably the most epic Nusa Penida hike is the famous Kelingking Cliff , where you can climb down a steep stairway to reach a pristine white sand beach at the bottom.

Another good Nusa Penida hike is Tembeling Beach And Forest , which has a nice mix of jungle and beach scenery, plus a sea cave and natural swimming pool.

If you really want an off-the-radar Nusa Penida hike, check out Batu Siha Beach . This is a new one I explored in 2019, and it’s still untouched except for locals. The path is intense and exhausting, but there’s a white sand beach at the bottom.

The hiking trails in Nusa Penida tend to be very short and intense, because you’re usually climbing down steep cliffs to reach a secluded beach, temple, or waterfall at the bottom.

Unlike Bali, Penida island doesn’t have any mountains or volcanoes to hike. This also means waterfalls are scarce on the island, although there are a couple interesting ones like Peguyangan Waterfall .

Best Sunset Spot In Nusa Penida

There are lots of great sunset spots in Nusa Penida.

The island has a long west-facing coastline, and pretty much anywhere on the west side is good for watching the sunset.

Two favorites are Crystal Bay , which has a relaxing beach, and Amok Sunset , which is a nice restaurant with views over Nusa Ceningan. The views at Kelingking Beach or Paluang Cliff can also be pretty nice.

Sunset time in Nusa Penida Bali can be anywhere from 6:00 PM to 6:45 PM, depending on the day and month. You can check that here .

For a good sunrise spot, check out the Nusa Penida treehouse , on the southeast side of the island.

Water Sports In Nusa Penida

The main water sports in Nusa Penida are snorkeling and scuba diving, and these are exceptional! The section below talks about these activities in a bit more detail.

Unlike Bali, Nusa Penida is not really known for good surfing or waves. However, two other good water sports in Nusa Penida are jet skiing and boat charters.

A boat charter can be great for snorkeling, fishing, or just relaxing while sightseeing around the coast of the island. You can book this with Pulau Private Charters , and they have cruise options to fit every need.

I’ve been itching to try a jet ski tour around Nusa Penida, because it looks like an amazing way to see the epic coastline from a new perspective. The only company currently offering this is Jet Ski Safari Bali Wibisana , and it’s not cheap!

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling In Nusa Penida

The coral reefs around Nusa Penida island are fantastic for diving and snorkeling, and you can even swim with manta rays, ocean sunfish (‘mola mola’), and all kinds of other colorful fish.

In fact, Nusa Penida is one of the best places in the world to swim with manta rays and giant mola mola fish. The latter can only be seen by scuba diving, but manta rays are easy to see while snorkeling near the surface. Take a look at Underwater Photography Guide’s handy writeup for scuba diving in Nusa Penida and Lembongan , including seasonal tips and the best diving spots.

For snorkeling, some of the best spots in Nusa Penida include Manta Bay, Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay, and Toyapakeh Wall. It’s possible to visit all of these spots in a day trip. There’s also an underwater Buddha statue , but sadly they don’t seem to be allowing access anymore.

Nusa Penida snorkeling tours can be arranged on the spot at Toyapakeh boat harbor, or it’s also possible to book them online as day tours departing from Bali, complete with hotel pickup and speed boat transfer.

What To Bring

If you’re putting together a Nusa Penida packing list, here are a few ideas of good things to bring.

Most of the items below can probably be found on Nusa Penida island in a pinch, but the quality of stuff you buy on the street won’t be guaranteed (personally, I’m not about to use a junky knockoff bag from a street vendor to protect my expensive camera gear).

It’s best to buy vetted products online!

  • Waterproof Bag: Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boats. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside. Everything was kept dry, even when I took the bag swimming a few times!
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch: Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone.
  • Snorkeling Gear: Many of the areas around Nusa Penida have nice corals and fish, and you won’t want to miss out on them. Snorkels and masks can be rented on the boat too, but if you plan to do multiple tours it’s more economical to bring your own gear.
  • Water Shoes: Save your feet some grief and wear water shoes! We got some cuts while walking to shore from the boats.

Nusa Penida Restaurants

The flurry of tourism is bringing lots of new restaurants and cafes to Nusa Penida, so now it has a bunch of great options!

Here are just a few of our restaurant recommendations:

  • Penida Colada : This was one of the first great restaurants on the island, with a big menu, beach vibes, good food and good presentation. Plus the name is cool!
  • Secret Penida Cafe : Another nice beachfront cafe in north Nusa Penida with Western and Indonesian food.
  • Penida Espresso : Best smoothie bowls on the island, and they’re very reasonably priced. Nice for a hot day.
  • Sweet Spot : One of the first indoor cafes on the island with air-conditioning! Great breakfast here.
  • The Chill : Ocean view pool with no minimum spend! Nice atmosphere with a wade-up bar and swings.
  • Amok Sunset : Fancy cliffside restaurant and bar with a pool, and great sunset views over Nusa Ceningan.
  • Warung Nengah Mesin : Mother’s cooking. Simply delicious. This is a local warung in the south part of the island, so it’s easy to reach from many of the major sights.

Nusa Penida Massage & Spa

Nusa Penida doesn’t have a lot of massage places compared to Bali, but I’m sure that’ll change over time as more tourists arrive. A foot massage is the perfect way to unwind after a full day of hiking or touring.

One of the best massage places in Nusa Penida would have to be Tejas Spa Warnakali , which has ocean views and is part of the Adiwana Warnakali Resort . You don’t need to be a guest at the resort to get a massage there, it’s open to the public.

For budget spa and massage places in Nusa Penida, you can check out Little Papaya , Juara Spa , and Dhipalia Massage . However, we haven’t tried these ones yet, so I can’t vouch for the quality.

Other Nusa Penida Tips

  • Credit Cards: Almost all restaurants, hotels, and other charges in Penida are cash only. Best thing to do is bring plenty of cash with you from Bali. I also like to book my bigger purchases online (like hotels and drivers), that way I can pay for them with credit card and save my precious cash for those little roadside warungs and fresh coconuts!
  • ATM: Penida still has very few ATM options. The most reliable seems to be the Bank BRI booth at Sampalan , but it only lets you pull 1 million Rupiah per try.
  • Cell Service: Phone reception is strong with Telkomsel in most of the main areas of Penida, although you may lose service in some places while driving around because of the hilly terrain of the island.
  • WiFi: The WiFi situation in Penida used to be very poor compared to Bali, but it has improved dramatically in the last few years, so most hotels already have good WiFi that can be used for browsing, streaming videos, and sending emails.
  • Convenience Stores: There are lots of small mini marts, especially around the north shore, where you can buy cheap snacks, drinks, toiletries, sunscreen, and other such things. Sari Yoga Mart and Bagus Mart are two good options. However, their selection is much smaller than what you’ll find shopping in Bali.
  • Language: The locals in Nusa Penida speak Balinese with a distinct dialect, and although many of them also understand Indonesian, they’re not schooled in English (unlike in Bali). This means most Nusa Penidans only know a little bit of English that they’ve been able to pick up from tourists, so be patient and come prepared to explain things by pointing or showing pictures.
  • Mosquitoes: There is some dengue fever present in Nusa Penida, but it seems to be less common than in Bali, which is probably because of the drier climate in Penida. You won’t need bug spray for visiting the beaches or really any of the popular tourist sites, but we have seen mosquitoes at the Tembeling forest and Goa Giri Putri, as well as near some of the hotels in Nusa Penida. Thankfully there is no malaria in either Penida or Bali, so you don’t need to worry about anti-malarial medications or anything like that. The entire Bali province is certified malaria free according to this Lancet study from 2018.

Is Nusa Penida Safe?

Yes, Nusa Penida is very safe!

We live in Bali off and on. Violent crime is unheard of in Penida, and petty crime is also rare. Just take normal precautions. This is a tight knit community and the locals are very kind and hospitable.

Balinese are religious people, so please don’t disrespect the temples or local culture. And do be careful if you hike any of the steep cliffs like Kelingking Beach!

Nusa Penida Wildlife

Just like Bali, the island of Nusa Penida is full of wonderful wildlife, and if you’re lucky you might see some during your visit.

Animals living in Penida include bats, spiders, monitor lizards, and monkeys (Balinese macaques). You can see the monkeys at Kelingking Cliff and other places on the island. At the Goa Giri Putri cave , there are even two species of endangered purplish-orange crabs that live nowhere else on Earth except Nusa Penida island.

Nusa Penida is a bird sanctuary with many endangered bird species, including the very nice Bali starlings. Not many of these are left in the wild, so sightings are rare, but it’s hoped their numbers will improve.

Snakes in Nusa Penida include pythons, vipers, spitting cobras, and sea snakes. The only one I’ve seen here personally is the island pit viper (Trimeresurus insularis).

In the main tourist spots of Nusa Penida, you aren’t likely to ever see a snake. If you do, treat it with extreme caution! Venomous snakes in Bali can be very dangerous and there’s no anti-venom available in Penida.

One time I almost stepped on a very venomous island pit viper while hiking in Nusa Penida. My foot landed within inches of the snake, which was coiled up in the center of the path, but thankfully its head was turned away from me and it didn’t see how close my foot landed.

The triangular head and bright red tail on its green body was a giveaway. This was in a less traveled part of the island with lots of foliage. It wasn’t in a tourist area.

If you go snorkeling or scuba diving at Nusa Penida, you can get up close with the gentle manta rays and gigantic ocean sunfish (‘mola mola’), and all kinds of other colorful fish and coral. We’ve also seen sea turtles and dolphins in the waters around Penida.

Best Time To Visit

Nusa Penida has a drier and more sunny climate than mainland Bali, so any month is great for visiting.

The best time to visit Nusa Penida island really just depends on what you’re looking for.

Bali’s rainy season runs from November to April. It’s less crowded during this time, and the rain is mostly at night, but the weather during the day can be hot and humid at 90-95 F (32-35 C).

From May to August, the temps are a lot cooler, and it’s more breezy and sunny. This is the high season so it’s a little more crowded.

Penida is spectacular at any time of the year, but I think the best months for photography are March to May (right after the rainy season ends), as this is when the island is covered with green foliage.

However, if you’re just looking for the nicest weather, May to August are the most comfortable months of the year.

Is Nusa Penida Worth It?

If you’ve kept reading this far and you still aren’t sure whether you should visit Pineda, then the answer is YES, Nusa Penida is definitely worth it!

This island has some of the best natural scenery anywhere in the Bali province, and some of the best views anywhere in Indonesia for that matter. It has great photo spots, cliffs, caves, beaches, hikes, water sports, and more.

There are even lots of nice hotels and restaurants popping up, and it’s becoming easier to get around the island. Overall, it’s well worth crossing the short distance from Bali to Nusa Penida in order to see all of the things this island has to offer.

How Long To Stay

Don’t be a day tripper. There are so many good things to do in Nusa Penida island. You need to spend at least 2 days to see the best highlights, even if you don’t do any snorkeling.

I would try to spend 3 or 4 days in the Nusa islands if possible, but you could easily fill a week, especially if you plan to do snorkeling or scuba diving.

Nusa Penida Itinerary

Here’s what a sample 4-day itinerary for Nusa Penida could look like:

  • Day 1: West Nusa Penida . Visit Kelingking Beach , Paluang Cliff , Pererenan Cliff , Banah Cliff Point , and Tembeling Beach .
  • Day 2: East Nusa Penida . Visit Diamond Beach , Atuh Beach , Rumah Pohon Treehouse , Teletubbies Hill , and Goa Giri Putri Cave Temple .
  • Day 3: Snorkeling + West Penida . Take a half day snorkeling tour and then continue the land tour, visiting Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach , and Smoke Beach.
  • Day 4: South Nusa Penida . Visit Suwehan Beach , Sekartaji Cliff (or Nyanyad Beach ), Manta Point Overlook , and Crystal Bay .

You can take a look at my full blog post about this Ultimate 4-Day Nusa Penida Itinerary for more detailed information and photos!

Nusa Penida Hotels

Nusa lembongan & ceningan.

While you’re busy exploring Nusa Penida island, don’t forget there are also two other nice islands located next to it — Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, respectively.

The islands of Lembongan and Ceningan are connected to each other by a colorful yellow bridge, and even though they don’t have the epic cliffs and dramatic scenery of Penida, they’re still worth a visit for their nice hotels , seaside cafes, and laidback atmosphere.

It’s easy to go between the Nusa islands with a short and cheap boat ride. Some people even base themselves in Lembongan while touring Penida.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at Saren Villa on the north coast of Nusa Penida , and paid 240k Rupiah ($15 USD) for a private double room with cold A/C, hot shower, and good WiFi.

This is one of the cheapest options in Penida, and it's in a great location near the best restaurants! We were happy.

Prices may fluctuate from time to time, so just keep an eye out for a good deal.

In recent years Nusa Penida finally got some attention from mainstream tourism after being ignored for a surprisingly long time. For recent decades, the people of the island continued their traditional lifestyle despite being located right next to the every-busy and very touristy Bali. Ironically, this was exactly the reason, for the growth of Nusa Penida’s popularity. Many foreigners get anxious after some time from over-tourism in Bali and started to look for more authentic places like Lombok or a much smaller island, just across the Badung Strait – Nusa Penida.

Though you can find tons of information and books online claiming that in Nusa Penida you can still see how people lived in Bali before foreigners came – it is no longer exactly the truth. Nusa Penida is nowhere close to being shy of tourism. Most of the touristic landmarks are crowded with the usual souvenir or food shops, and toilet or shower services are offered widely as well, but the most annoying is the Instagram tourism installations, like watchtowers, heart-shaped benches, and sometimes swings.

Maybe it is just me, but the popularity of these things totally destroys the purpose of why we come to Nusa Penida in the first place. This is especially evident during the West Nusa Penida tour, which is surprising to me because the island has what most of Bali has already lost – authenticity. Unfortunately, it seems to be totally ignored in the shadow of the main highlights in Nusa Penida. I’m not saying that they are not worth visiting, but be sure to embrace the other parts of this majestic island on the road, not just a few picture-perfect spots on the island. One way or another, today, many tourists pour to the island for either Manta Ray snorkeling or West Nusa Penida tour .

Map of Nusa Penida

Highlights of nusa penida west tour.

Despite all the antics of this tour, the beauty of its highlights speaks out loudly for itself. If you single out just the beauty reflected in so many pictures and ignore the experience, the West Nusa Penida tour will be exactly what you expect it to be – the paradise island.

T-Rex Cape & Kelingking Beach

It is definitely the most iconic landmark of the whole Nusa Penida island. Much so, that T-Rex cape often found itself on the covers of trip promotions to the magical Bali. I imagine many travelers found themselves a bit tricked after learning that these majestic cliffs are on a different island and that they’ll have to drag their luggage through a sandy beach, just to get wet in the warm Indian Ocean, before embarking on a speedboat from Sanur to Nusa Penida… …but things people do these days to get legendary Instagram photos of their own is no longer surprising. Besides the breathtaking vistas of T-Rex Cape and the surrounding cliffs, you’ll find a queue to the best spot for the best shots. If you want simply to embrace the beautiful scenery, you can do so from a different angle as much as you want, but if you need a copy/paste shot that everyone else has, prepare to wait half an hour or more.

Descending to Kelingking Beach might also get crowded and difficult as most people don’t know how to behave in this kind of place. If you decide to take the climb, which is definitely not for everyone, I would suggest coming early for fewer people and when the tide is low. Otherwise, there might be not that much of a beach to descend to. If you decide to take a swim after a difficult descent, it is no problem as there are plenty of locals offering shower and WC services up the cliff. You just need to climb it.

The Paluang Cliff

Another popular spot for taking photos, not much different from anywhere else in this spectacular area but for the installments to get more beautiful shots for more likes on Instagram. A must-visit if you came here to boost your social profile but I would rather suggest walking peacefully along the cliffs and ignoring this exact spot.

Angel Billabong

One of the places to get wet on the Nusa Penida West Tour in case you are not going to Crystal Beach. The natural pools of Angel Billabong are an experience that you won’t be able to get back in Bali. It is supplied with water by waves of the Indian Ocean. It is very popular for taking beautiful solo pictures, therefore expect some queues here too. If the waves are high, you won’t even be going to be able to clearly see the pools. In that case, don’t try getting too close to Angel Billabong because any of the waves might take you to the bottom of the ocean with it and I doubt there’ll be people stupid enough to try saving you.

The Broken Beach

The sibling landmark of Angel Billabong is situated just minutes away on foot from each other. The Broken Beach is a beautiful rock formation consisting of a huge arc, connecting the ocean with a large washed-out “cataract”. Enjoy this unique landmark because it definitely has its days counted. The arc might not collapse any time soon but seeing the gigantic waves that can form on the coast of Nusa Penida, sadly, it is inevitable.

Overall, the area of Broken Beach is relatively stressless compared to most of the landmarks on the West Nusa Penida tour. It is like getting to a park after crossing several difficult streets. To my joy, there is a possibility to walk all the way around the beach, taking pictures at any angle possible. Broken Beach is not the only landmark you’ll get to enjoy. A beautiful vista of the cliffs, next to Manta Bay will be right in front of you. Many people take their moment to enjoy the dreamlike turquoise waters of the ocean, or the huge waves, depending on the weather. One way or another, I bet you’ll enjoy this area despite your expectations or the reason you came here for.

Crystal Beach

The most important unanswered question regarding Crystal Beach if it was named after the crystal clear turquoise waters in the bay or the crystal-shaped island in front of the beach. What is clear is that you are going to enjoy your time here and that Crystal Beach, in fact, is great for snorkeling. Much so, that you’ll notice countless ships anchored between the cliffs and the island for the people to see some colorful fishes on their Manta Ray Snorkeling Tour.

Due to the chaotic sea during my visit to Crystal Beach, I only had a chance to peek underwater two days later during my snorkeling tour but from what I’ve read and seen, it is possible to do snorkeling from the beach. Especially, if you brought your fins to Nusa Penida instead of a dress for each landmark on the island. The corals were not the best that I’ve seen in Bali or Nusa Penida but the diversity of life was the greatest that I’ve ever seen in my life.

Pro tip: it is possible to get your lunch or early dinner on Crystal Bay with the prices and quality being relatively good. This way you’ll also get a nicer place to relax by the picturesque Crystal Beach.

Personal Experience

As you might tell I didn’t enjoy everything the West Nusa Penida tour has to offer. Of course, I could settle with the idea that Nusa Penida is what it seemed to be during the tour but the east tour experience was so much better, thus I can’t help myself but compare the two, and I have a separate article to help other people decide which one is better, east or west Nusa Penida? I’m afraid its days are counted as well, but for now, the east is not ruined by social media zombies as much as the west.

Given everything I said, the tour has its strengths as much as its weaknesses. If you are a snorkeling fan, you can pretend this tour to be a world-class underwater experience paired with some lovely spots for some sexy shots. Or if you care about getting perfect photos on a remote island, this is what you’ll get. For a price, but I guess you are used to queues at this time. The key is, with the correct expectations, you won’t be disappointed. Despite all annoyances, the West Nusa Penida tour is a must-visit for anyone who wishes for an adventure in Bali.

Can I do West Nuda Penida Myself?

Yes, you can but it won’t be fun. Outside the major settlements, Nusa Penida’s infrastructure is decades behind compared to Bali. The roads are so narrow that it is almost impossible for two cars to pass each other, and you are lucky to find paved roads as most of the roads leading to the most popular landmarks on the island are off-road-type roads. They are rather uncomfortable in a jeep so challenging them with a scooter is a real pain. I’ve seen many couples arguing on the sides of such roads, on what was supposed to be a romantic getaway to a remote island.

Book West Nusa Penida Tour

In the past, it might have been difficult to visit Nusa Penida but today there are countless options to choose from. I know from experience that being a first-timer, it is hard to guess the right approach for you. The most popular approach remains day-tripping from Bali island but I would suggest booking accommodation for a night or two on Nusa Penida and traveling from there. This way you’ll support the locals and learn to appreciate the island more. As a bonus, you’ll be able to book West and East Nusa Penida tours with your hosts for a better price.

  • Day Trip from Bali: Best of Nusa Penida Tour by Fast Boat (10h | from €92.75/person) . The price covers hotel pick-up and drop-off, a round-trip to Nusa Penida from Sanur by fast boat, an English speaking driver and local guide, and water.
  • Day Trip from Bali: West Nusa Penida & Snorkeling Combo Tour (10h | from €183.83/person with discounts for couples and groups up to 12). A great option if you don’t have time to do the manta ray snorkeling trip another day. This combo tour covers Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, and two rounds of snorkeling with a chance to see manta rays. The price includes pickup, an English-speaking guide, insurance, and water.
  • Bali – Nusa Penida Fast Boat Transfers (±45min | from €31.38/person) . One-way transfer between the islands is a good option if you decide to book the tour with your host. The price includes hotel transfers from Kerobokan, Seminyak, Legian, Kuta, Tuban, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Denpasar, Sanur, the airport, and parts of Canggu.
  • Private Car and Driver Hire in Nusa Penida (8h | from €62.06/per group up to 5) . The price includes transportation by private air-conditioned vehicle within Nusa Penida and English-speaking driver services.
  • Bali & Nusa Penida 2-Day Flexi Combo Instagram Private Tour (10-12h x2 | from €188.15/per person). A great option if you want to get dozens of perfect pictures for Instagram just within two days and relax for the rest of your time in Bali for a change. The tour will take you through the most picturesque spots in Bali and Nusa Penida. As much as I don’t like this type of tourism, I have to tell the local Instagram guides really know their job and will make sure that you get those photos! The price covers hotel transfers, a round-trip to Nusa Penida with a fast boat, jungle swing, an English-speaking guide, and water.

All options are curated by the time-proved tour platform – GetYourGuide. This company not only guarantees quality services but also offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour date and a full refund if you are not satisfied with what you get!

What can I do to Preserve Natural Nusa Penida?

  • Take a different angle photo – don’t stand in the queues for copy/paste photos. It totally ruins the magic of all the exceptional places in Nusa Penida.
  • Take your trash with you – the trash problem in Nusa Penida is much more apparent than in Bali itself. Try to take your trash with you and throw it out in the bigger settlements.
  • Use coral-safe sunscreen – Nusa Penida has surprisingly and relatively healthy coral reefs. If you decide to go into the ocean for snorkeling or a swim, be sure to avoid hazardous sunscreens. It makes a big difference.
  • Support locals – if you visit Nusa Penida just for one day, be sure to spend some money here. The local people are very nice and less hawky compared to Bali, but they are poorer as well. Be sure to exchange your unforgettable experiences on their island for a souvenir or a snack.
