Light It Up: Twin Cities & Greater Minnesota Christmas & Holiday Light Displays

Who knew there were this many homes decorated with amazing Christmas lights out there? The people who create this holiday magic year after year are Christmas heroes. They don’t do this for money (although some collect a little something for a charity), but year after year they get out in Minnesota weather and put up decorations for the community to enjoy. Why sit home and watch The Great Christmas Light Fight, when you can experience the magic up close.

Load the kids in the car, pack some snacks and popcorn and enjoy these dancing lights, giant candy canes, Rudolph reindeer, abominable snowmen, and glowing snowmen on your own schedule anytime before Santa’s sleigh arrives (or at least by New Year’s day).

We have also included some paid tours and Twin Cities-area community Christmas tree lightings in our lists of holiday light displays. Even if you can’t make the tree lighting event, check out these locations during December. Displays will be up all month.

Community Holiday Light Tours

Community holiday light tours are the secret easy button of the family holiday light drive. Take advantage of the maps created by these municipalities and community organizations. Fun idea : Combine your tour with a stop by the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train. We list all the Twin Cities stops here and on our calendar.

1. Bloomington Winter Lights Tour

Bloomington, Minnesota Tour home light displays and vote for your favorites. Starting approximately December 8th. Find a tour map here .

2. Brooklyn Park December Lights Tour

Brooklyn Park, Minnesota The interactive map is live for 2023 and will continue to grow as residents add their homes to the tour during December .

3. Champlin Holiday Light Tour

Champlin, MN 55316 The city will create a list of participating homes for families to drive by all December 2 -31, 2024 . Pair this drive with the December 6th Crossings Tree Lighting.

4. Chanhassen Tour of Lights

Chanhassen, MN 55317 Participating homes will be lit from at least 5pm-9pm nightly and will be family-friendly. Google map and driving instructions will be posted on the City of Chanhassen’s website. Light displays will be lit from December 2-31, 2023.

5. Crystal Sparkles Holiday Lights

Homes & Businesses Across Crystal, MN 55422 The City of Crystal will be sharing participating home and business locations on an online map or grab a physical map at City Hall or the Community Center. December 3, 2023; 5-9pm.

6. Elk River Holiday Lights

Elk River, MN 55330 Residents are encouraged to submit their home to be added to the Holiday Lights Tour. Month of December.

7. Fridley Winter Lights Contest & Tour

Residents are again invited to participate in Fridley’s Winter Light contest. Visitors can create their own custom lights tour around town using the city’s map of entrants. Maps and a list of winners will be available December 16, 2023.

8. Hastings Holiday Lights Tour

Hastings, MN 55033 Take a self-guided tour of holiday lights in Hastings. The City publishes a map of homes and businesses that have outdoor holiday light displays that will be available shortly after December 4, 2023. 

Best night to tour : The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train rolls through Hastings on December 9th from 8:15pm to 8:45pm.

9. Inver Grove Heights Light Up the Heights Holiday Contest

The city’s annual holiday light contest draws more than a dozen participants. Judging December 5-8th. 2023 maps will be available in early December.

10. North St. Paul Hometown Holiday Lights Contest

All participating addresses will be posted around December 10, 2023.

11. North Suburban Holiday Light Map

St. Anthony, Roseville, New Brighton, Columbia Heights, Arden Hills, and Mounds View Follow this map of holiday lights in several north suburban cities.

Best Night to Tour : The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train stops on the border of Columbia Heights and Minneapolis on December 11th at 8pm.

12. Ramsey Deck the House Lights Contest

Ramsey, MN 55303 Grab a map from the city’s website and go on a self-guided tour. Residents can vote for their favorites. December 4-18, 2023.

13. Richfield Holiday Lights Decorating Contest

Richfield, MN 55423 Community members can nominate addresses for the holiday lights contest. All nominated homes will be listed on Richfield’s website for residents to enjoy at their own pace. Find a map here . Nominations are due by December 13, 2023 at noon.

Spectacular tree lightings & dazzling festivals of lights

If you love the small town, Hallmark movie vibe, than these small festivals are the perfect way to mix the awe and wonder of holiday lights with a night of family fun. These ceremonies go all out with Christmas decorations and traditional activities, like caroling, hot drinks and s’mores and sometimes wagon or sleight rides. You’ll also usually get a chance to see Santa. If you would rather avoid the crowd, visit these locations any time in December after the festival.

Take a drive down summit avenue, for an extended tour of the beautiful historic homes on this block and some of the best Christmas lights. 2023 Holiday Tour dates TBA.

221 5th St E, St Paul, MN 55101 If you have half an hour for a stroll, consider a walk from Rice Park to Mears Park. They are less than a mile apart and both are beautifully decorated each year.

Hello. We are Christmas Lights on Big Oak Drive in Burnsville. Our address is 2012 Big Oak Drive. We have a pixel light show that’s coordinated to music. Tune your radios to 91.9 FM and enjoy some Christmas spirit. Our show runs Sunday – Thurs 5 pm-10 pm and Fri-Sat 5 pm – 10:30. There are 24 songs that play on a continuous loop. We kick off on Thanksgiving and ring in the New Year!

I have now completed my list of South East venues. Two quick notes first, both from Inver Grove Heights. The huge display on Ann Marie Trail is retired. However the neighborhood just a 1/2 mile east of there (86th Court E and Applegate Way) is very cool. Most homes participate and all of the trees are simply amazing. Still worth the trip to this neighborhood. Second is 6451 Bechman Court, house that had the synchronized light and santa video in the window has moved away. However, the new people did put some decorations up plus the whole Cul-de-sac stepped up and all of the home participate. This is still worth the trip. Stroll through CHS field and enjoy an interactive holiday-themed light display made up of over a million dazzling lights. Arboretum Winter Lights

Philly lights up for the holidays with a number of dazzling displays, from traditional to cutting edge, professional to DIY and everything in between.

Brilliant shows like the Electrical Spectacle Light Show at Franklin Square and LumiNature at the Philadelphia Zoo illuminate some of Philadelphia’s most iconic sites all season long.

And new for 2023: The Tinseltown Holiday Spectacular touches down in a new spot, taking over South Philly’s FDR Park for a few weeks of bright lights that are best enjoyed from a winding ice trail.

The surrounding counties get in on the illuminated action with a number of huge displays just a short car ride from Center City, including A Longwood Christmas at Longwood Gardens, the Holidays at Peddler’s Village and the LuminoCity Holiday Lights Festival at The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks.

Winter at dilworth park.

November 3, 2023 – March 17, 2024 (Dates vary by attraction)

Winter at Dilworth Park brings a touch of festive greenery to Center City with the return of the Wintergarden on Greenfield Lawn. Featuring illuminated arbor, reindeer topiaries, rustic woodland décor and an on-site Chaddsford Winery kiosk (offering warm mulled wine!), the picturesque Wintergarden overlooks Dilworth Park ’s popular ice skating rink. Winter at Dilworth Park also includes a chalet-style cabin, fire pits, seasonal refreshments, a holiday market and plenty of winter events.

Winter in Franklin Square

Franklin Square ups the wattage every year with the Electrical Spectacle Light Show, the centerpiece of its Winter in Franklin Square programming . The free nightly shows — inspired by Benjamin Franklin’s kite and key electricity experiment — illuminate the square every half hour as hundreds of thousands of choreographed lights dance to the tune of familiar holiday favorites. Songs for 2023 include All I Want for Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey, Feliz Navidad by José Feliciano and a version of Carol of the Bells performed by the London Festival Orchestra. Also on offer: mini-golf, street curling, fire pits, and festive food and drink.

Holidays at Peddler's Village

Festive decorations and more than 100 gingerbread creations help ring in the season at Peddler’s Village — as do the attraction’s 1 million twinkling lights, which adorn seemingly every building and tree in the charming shopping village for free viewing. The holiday season is also full of family-friendly events , so check the calendar when planning your visit.

Christmas Village in Philadelphia

November 18 – December 24, 2023 (select dates)

Senses come alive as you make your way through a maze of 120 vendors offering ornaments, jewelry, handmade toys, and high-quality arts and crafts at Christmas Village in Philadelphia . The open-air, European-inspired Christmas market in the heart of Center City serves up seasonal sounds, smells (raclette, anyone?) and sights in the form of dozens of vendor huts draped in mesmerizing European-style market lights. On the north apron of City Hall, a well-lit Ferris wheel dazzles, while in the courtyard, a double-decker carousel shines. Longer nighttime hours for 2023 make the market a perfect place for an illuminated evening stroll. Christmas Village in Philadelphia is open daily from November 23 to December 24, 2023, with a preview weekend on November 18 and 19, 2023.

Holiday Lights Display at the Herr's Snack Factory

The potato chip and snack food creators at Herr’s serve up a different type of treat during the holiday season: a free lighting display on the campus of Herr’s Nottingham-based factory. Guests are welcome to drive through the grounds each night after dusk to see the impressive arrangement, which features more than 600,000 lights. Plan accordingly: This is a BYO snacks situation.

The Comcast Holiday Spectacular and The Universal Sphere

The Comcast Center’s annual (and free!) super high-res LED holiday show celebrates the season against one of the world’s largest LED video walls. Combining performances from the Philadelphia Ballet with classic holiday songs, the 15-minute show features a virtual sleigh ride around the world. Also, don’t miss The Universal Sphere located next door at the tallest building in Philly — the Comcast Technology Center. This free cinematic experience uses lights, sounds, and movement to showcase the power of ideas. Both shows run daily (with sensory-friendly shows available), but advanced registration is recommended for The Universal Sphere.

Opens for the season Friday, November 24, 2023

Experience a waterfront winter wonderland at the Independence Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest on the Delaware River. Lights to see here include thousands on a festively decorated holiday tree and the bright bulbs illuminating a 60-foot-tall Ferris wheel.  A star-studded tree lighting ceremony is set for Friday, December 1, 2023. Entry into Winterfest is free, tickets are required to ice skate, and cabins and fire pits must be reserved in advance.

Macy’s Christmas Light Show

The Grand Court in the National Historic Landmark Wanamaker Building has hosted the iconic Christmas Light Show since 1956. Macy’s continues this quintessential holiday tradition in 2023 with daily displays featuring thousands of twinkling lights in the shapes of snowflakes, candy canes and dancing snowmen — accompanied by seasonal sounds from the famed Wanamaker Organ. Five free shows take place Mondays through Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. On Sundays, three shows run at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Note: The 28,750-pipe Wanamaker Organ is played live during the noon and 6 p.m. showings each day (except Sundays). Recorded music accompanies all other shows.

American Heritage Credit Union Grand Illumination

The regal campus of the American Heritage Credit Union in Northeast Philadelphia shines brightly each holiday season with two 40-foot Christmas trees, hundreds of wreaths and more than 400,000 twinkling lights. The lights flick on at dusk each night when visitors are invited to stroll the campus for free and take in the lights at their leisure. Free on-site parking is available, and a free kickoff celebration is scheduled for 7 p.m. on November 25, 2023.

Miracle on South 13th Street

South Philly neighbors on the 1600 block of South 13th Street work together every year on the elaborate display that adorns their street for the Miracle on South 13th Street . Stroll down the block and take in each home’s decked-out decor, which ranges from traditional twinkle lights to elaborate movie-themed displays. Keep an eye on the official Facebook account for special theme nights that benefit local charities. If you’re driving, expect traffic slowdowns and be on the lookout for pedestrians.

Visit Philadelphia Holiday Tree at City Hall

The city’s magnificent 55-foot-tall holiday tree illuminates the north side of City Hall , just around the corner from all the wintry fun in Dilworth Park and Christmas Village at LOVE Park . Don’t miss seeing the tree sparkle for the first time this season during the tree lighting celebration on Thursday, November 30, 2023, featuring performances by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Jordin Sparks, DJ Diamond Kuts and more.

Ticketed Holiday Light Displays & Shows

Wild lights at the elmwood park zoo.

November 17 – December 30, 2023 (select dates)

Norristown’s Elmwood Park Zoo shines (quite literally) during the holiday season, with millions of LED lights illuminating the Montco attraction’s 16 acres during Wild Lights . The walk-through experience features brilliant light displays, live entertainment, and animal meet-and-greets during the evening hours. Tickets are required.

LumiNature at the Philadelphia Zoo

November 17 – December 31, 2023 (select dates)

Lights, mammals, action. This immersive display transforms the Philadelphia Zoo ’s day-scape into a nighttime multimedia spectacle. After the animals are tucked away for the evening, the zoo lights up with more than 1 million holiday lights in 16 distinct zones. New displays for 2023 — including a sparkling waterfall and vine wall along Shimmer River — join returning favorites like the can’t-miss, 25-foot-tall tree made entirely out of 1,500 illuminated lawn flamingos.

Tinseltown Holiday Spectacular in FDR Park

November 17, 2023 – January 1, 2024 (select dates)

Twinkling lights, seasonal sounds and icy activities land in South Philly’s FDR Park for the Tinseltown Holiday Spectacular . Take in the bright lights as you skate along a winding ice trail or glide down a 160-foot-long ice slide. In between “ooohs” and “ahhhs,” pop into the Mistletoe Marketplace to find that perfect gift, or grab a bite to eat and an adult beverage inside the Union Forge Lodge. Timed tickets are required, with optional add-ons available for the Ice Trail and Independence Blue Cross ice slide.

A Longwood Christmas at Longwood Gardens

Turn back the clocks for this retro celebration of holiday seasons gone by at Longwood Gardens . The horticultural haven — located about an hour from Center City — lights up with hundreds of trees trimmed in throwback fashion. Think classic baubles, tons of tinsel and iconic childhood toys. Adding to the festive feel, the botanical garden’s illuminated fountains dance to the sounds of the season. Timed tickets are required.

A Very Furry Christmas at Sesame Place

Bucks County is home to one of only two Sesame Street -themed parks in the world. And each year, the puppet-friendly park transforms into a winter wonderland with millions of glittering lights , a Christmas parade, festive floats and performances, musical sing-alongs, and coordinated light shows around a 30-foot Christmas tree.

LuminoCity Holiday Lights Festival at The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center

One of the nation’s top traveling holiday spectaculars comes to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, which plays host to the LuminoCity Holiday Lights Festival . Celebrating a new “Golden Holiday” theme for 2023, the sprawling display features dozens of bright, colorful, large-scale displays including an iconic 50-foot, fully-decorated Christmas tree.

Holiday lights – whether they be Yule logs or candles – have been around for centuries. In 1880, Thomas Edison strung together a set of electric lights and hung them outside of his laboratory during Christmastime. Two years later, Edison's friend Edward H. Johnson wound a strand of red, white and blue electric lights around his Christmas tree (the tree even spun!). It took several more decades before such lights were widely and cheaply available.

Nowadays, homes and businesses across the U.S. deck their halls, trees and exteriors with lights, some creating enormous spectacles that draw yearly crowds. To help you decide which to prioritize, U.S. News rounded up the top Christmas light displays across America. Whether you prefer small displays that pack a festive punch or flashy shows full of glitz and glamour, these colorful exhibits are sure to bring you plenty of holiday cheer.

The Top Christmas Lights Displays in the U.S. by Region

Gardens aglow at coastal maine botanical gardens: boothbay, maine.

Price: $19 for adults and $10 for children; tickets must be purchased in advance Dates: Nov. 18 to Dec. 31

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is thrilling at any time of year, according to previous travelers, but they saved their biggest praise for the facility's annual Gardens Aglow event. More than 750,000 lights adorn 14 acres in shapes ranging from Christmas trees to round baubles to mushrooms. Lights extend beyond the gardens, too, thanks to the Gardens Aglow Lighting Contest. Communities around Boothbay will create their own displays, and visitors can drive around to see them (and vote for their favorite). Maps will be available to find the displays.

The event is held every Thursday to Sunday between Nov. 18 and Dec. 31, as well as select other days; it's closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Entry times range from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The property is located in Boothbay, a small town about 60 miles northeast of Portland .

Dyker Heights light displays: Brooklyn, New York

Price: Free Dates: Late November to early January

Brooklyn's Dyker Heights residents wrap their windows in fairy lights, twine colorful bulbs around the trees and erect wireframe displays atop their roofs come the holidays. And, of course, there are plenty of Santa Claus, nutcracker, snowman and elf figurines. Previous visitors praised the area's light displays, saying the homes are beautiful and it's a must-do activity in New York City come Christmastime. Some suggest arriving just after New Year's to explore with fewer people around.

The Dyker Heights neighborhood sits in southwest Brooklyn ; the best displays are typically found between 11th and 13th avenues and from 83rd to 86th streets. Lights go up after Thanksgiving and generally stay lit from 5 to 9 p.m. through New Year's Eve. The area is free to explore, though tour operators like Dyker Heights Christmas Lights and A Slice of Brooklyn Bus Tours offer guided trips through Dyker Heights at specific times for a fee. Tickets for tours range from $35 to $75 per person.

Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights: Bronx, New York

Price: Starts at $41.95 for adults and $26.95 for children 3 to 12; tickets must be purchased in advance Dates: Nov. 17 to Jan. 7

It's no wonder that, as one of the best zoos in the U.S. , the Bronx Zoo puts on a fantastic light show. You'll see almost 400 lanterns that represent animals from all over the world, including hippopotamuses, bears, penguins, jellyfish and insects, among many other species. New for 2023, lanterns will also take the shape of native New York species like raccoons, great egrets and red foxes. There are also light shows, a kid-favorite train ride, ice carving demonstrations, refreshments and entertainers on stilts.

Visitors say the Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights display is a must-do event while in New York City, though some note it's an expensive trip. Holiday Lights runs from 3 to 9 p.m. on select days from Nov. 17 to Jan. 7. There are sensory-friendly nights on Dec. 7 and Jan. 5 that will feature fewer crowds, quieter music and adjusted programming. You can opt for a date-specific ticket or more flexible (but pricier) any-night ticket.

ZooLights at the Smithsonian's National Zoo: Washington, D.C.

Price: $6 per person Dates: Nov. 24 to Dec. 30

ZooLights at the Smithsonian's National Zoo is one of the premier events in Washington, D.C. , extremely popular among residents and visitors alike. The zoo is decorated to the nines with 500,000-plus colorful LED lights and glowing animal lanterns. Visitors can catch live music performances and sample tasty snacks as they walk through the display and admire the lights. The pathways to view the lights are wheelchair-accessible but situated on a hill with a bit of an incline – something for disabled travelers and families with young kids and strollers to keep in mind. The event runs on select days from Nov. 24 to Dec. 30 (mostly on weekends) and is open from 5 p.m. until 8 or 9 p.m., depending on the day.

Overall, many love checking out ZooLights each year, but some warn that it can get crowded and note that the animals are not out. Though it was free in years past, ZooLights now charges a small entry fee to help offset the cost of the event, while concession and parking proceeds will contribute to animal care. There is a parking fee of $30; if you wish to visit by Metro, the nearest stops are Cleveland Park or Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan on the Red Line.

Koziar's Christmas Village: Bernville, Pennsylvania

Price: Starts at $13 for adults and $11 for children 4 to 10 Dates: Nov. 4 to Jan. 1

For a Christmas-themed stroll, visit Koziar's Christmas Village, which sits about 45 miles southwest of Allentown, Pennsylvania . Not only will you see homes, trees, fences and more strung up with lights and wireframe figures, but you'll also have the chance for photos with Santa, displays featuring a toymaker and more. Travelers agree the lights are gorgeous, but some complained about the traffic (especially on Saturdays) and felt the attractions did not justify the ticket price.

Lights are on from Nov. 4 to Jan. 1, though Koziar's is only open on weekends up until Thanksgiving. Specific hours vary depending on the month and day, but you can generally visit from 5 or 6 p.m. to 9 or 10 p.m. Note that on designated prime nights, each ticket is $4 extra than the standard pricing.

Garden of Lights at Brookside Gardens: Wheaton, Maryland

Price: $10 for ages 5 and older; tickets must be purchased online in advance Dates: Nov. 17 to Dec. 31

If you're looking to stretch your legs before settling in for a winter's nap, head to Brookside Gardens. A half-mile walking path winds through the 50-acre garden decked out in shimmering holiday lights. Displays keep to the garden theme, showcasing plants, flowers and insects. New features for 2023 include a winter scene and "falling snow" in the Rose Garden.

Travelers say the display is nice but note you won't need much time to explore. The display runs nearly every night between Nov. 17 and Dec. 31, except for Nov. 20 to 23, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. You can visit from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The gardens sit less than 15 miles north of Washington, D.C.

Fantasy in Lights at Callaway Resort & Gardens: Pine Mountain, Georgia

Price: Starts at $24.95 for adults and $19.95 for children 3 to 11 Dates: Nov. 17 to Jan. 1

Callaway Resort & Gardens' Fantasy in Lights continually wows travelers, who recommend staying at least one night at the resort to extend the fun. The gardens, which sit about 80 miles southwest of Atlanta and are one of the top things to do in Georgia , offer a walk-through experience with light tunnels and nutcrackers as well as a 7-mile light show to drive through. The event features the Callaway Christmas Village, where you can meet Santa or grab some refreshments, and glowing trees surround the property's lake.

Tickets include both the walk-through experience as well as the option to either drive your own vehicle or take the Jolly Trolley. Pricing varies depending on the day you go. You'll select a specific evening time slot when booking your trip through the lights show, but tickets also grant access to the Christmas Village, which is open daily at 4 p.m., and include day admission to Callaway Gardens prior to your designated time.

Louisiana Holiday Trail of Lights: Various cities in Louisiana

Price: Free at most displays, though some charge fees Dates: Mid-November to early January

Along the Louisiana Holiday Trail of Lights, you'll have the chance to see light collections in Alexandria and Pineville; Minden; Monroe and West Monroe; Natchitoches; Logansport; Ruston; and Shreveport and Bossier City. Each destination features its own special offerings. For example, Natchitoches is known for its lights that illuminate the downtown area and for hosting a plethora of events, including its annual Christmas Festival, weekly fireworks shows, and tours of historic and highly decorated homes (for a fee). Meanwhile, Minden is a paradise for nutcracker enthusiasts.

Visitors praise all of the different decorations along the Holiday Trail of Lights, particularly those in Natchitoches. Most displays are free to visit, though extra charges may apply for attending events or buying treats. You'll need to purchase a $10 armband to attend the Natchitoches Christmas Festival on most Saturdays, for example. You'll find the cities mostly in northern Louisiana , off of state highways 49 or 20. Displays usually go up in mid-November and are taken down shortly after New Year's Day.

Nights of a Thousand Candles at Brookgreen Gardens: Murrells Inlet, South Carolina

Brookgreen Gardens' name for its wintertime event does not do it justice: The Nights of a Thousand Candles display actually includes more than 2,700 real candles in addition to strung electric lights. Multiple visitors applauded the Brookgreen Gardens display and particularly enjoyed seeing the oak trees aglow with cascading lights. The installation is typically open 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday during the period of Nov. 25 to Dec. 31 (though it's closed between Dec. 18 and 26). The gardens sit less than 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet.

Nights of Lights: St. Augustine, Florida

More than 3 million lights illuminate St. Augustine's historic district in Florida , including must-visit sights like the Lightner Museum and St. George Street. If you'd rather explore with a guide, you can sign up for a tour of the lights with a local company like Old Town Trolley Tours or the Red Train Tours from Ripley's. Once you've seen the lights, admire the Villa Zorayda Museum's holiday decor or watch the daytime Christmas Parade on Dec. 2.

Previous visitors say this is a terrific time to visit St. Augustine because the lights are spectacular. Perusing Nights of Lights is free for all – though tours and any goodies you wish to purchase from downtown vendors will cost you. The lights are viewable every night from Nov. 18 through Jan. 28.

Magic Christmas in Lights at Bellingrath Gardens and Home: Theodore, Alabama

Bellingrath Gardens and Home sits along the banks of the Mobile River in Theodore, Alabama, about 25 miles south of Mobile . The venue's Magic Christmas in Lights event spans 65 acres and features light displays handcrafted by staff members. After visitors walk the outdoor grounds, they can see the Bellingrath Home outfitted in its finest holiday decor on a guided tour.

Reviewers say the displays are stunning and highly recommend taking a tour of the home, led by interesting and friendly guides. Others warn you may encounter long traffic lines to access the display. Magic Christmas in Lights glows nightly from Nov. 24 through Jan. 3 (though it's closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1); you can visit from 5 to 9 p.m. If you don't plan to visit the home, choose the cheaper ticket option that only includes access to the gardens. You'll find double the joy at the Atlanta Botanical Garden 's holiday spectacle. Garden Lights, Holiday Nights showcases traditional holiday cheer such as lights strung up to form Christmas trees and strands dangling from tree branches like icicles. The event also features a 144-foot skynet by Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics as well as a sculpture of the White Rabbit from "Alice in Wonderland," both of which were part of previous garden exhibitions. There's a new addition to the exhibit crafted by Cédric Le Borgne as well.

Eventgoers will find several places to snag refreshments as well as a s'mores station. Previous travelers said the entire presentation is lovely and a truly immersive experience. You can view the exhibits nightly from Nov. 18 through Jan. 14 from 5 to 11 p.m. Ticket prices vary by day; there are also ticket options with certain premium benefits or flexible rebooking.

Around 5 million holiday lights bedazzle Pigeon Forge – and for a much longer stretch of time than similar displays in other destinations across America. Pigeon Forge Winterfest showcases illuminated features throughout the town, including on many of its top attractions , which remain lit from mid-November to mid-February. Dollywood , in particular, earns rave reviews from its guests for its massive Christmas lights exhibition and family-friendly holiday shows (though you should expect plenty of crowds).

If you'd rather stay in your warm car while checking out the area's twinkling lights, drive along the Pigeon Forge Parkway for a festive spectacle or check out Shadrack's Christmas Wonderland at Soaky Mountain Waterpark. Be sure to leave room in your schedule for one or two Pigeon Forge Winterfest events – parades, train rides and shopping experiences are just a few options – in Pigeon Forge or nearby Gatlinburg . There are no specific tickets or set hours for Pigeon Forge Winterfest; it'll vary by what events and experiences you choose.

Christmas Town USA: McAdenville, North Carolina

Price: Free Dates: Dec. 1 to 26

Though you should be prepared to contend with other revelers, visitors say Christmas Town USA should be experienced at least once. This North Carolina town sits less than 20 miles from Charlotte . Since 1956, homes in McAdenville have gone all out with wreaths, lights, tree trimmings, figurines and more to celebrate the season.

On Dec. 1 you can attend the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, which takes place by the neighborhood's lake, or stop by on Dec. 14 for the Yule Log Ceremony. Lights are up from Dec. 1 to 26 from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Christmas Town recommends visiting Monday to Thursday, as traffic over the weekends is high. You can also walk the route instead, but keep in mind it is 1.3 miles.

Austin Trail of Lights: Austin, Texas

The Austin Trail of Lights, hosted in Austin 's Zilker Metropolitan Park , is a holiday extravaganza. The trail glistens with more than 2 million bulbs. As you weave your way around the park, you'll pass through tunnels and catch glimpses of holiday must-sees like Santa's home and workshop. There are 70-plus displays, not to mention 90 trees wrapped in twinkling lights. Plan to walk about 2.5 miles in total.

Reviewers say the lights and displays are incredible but warn of heavy crowds and long wait times. The Austin Trail of Lights runs from Dec. 8 through 23 but is closed on Mondays. With a general admission ticket, visit any time from 7 to 10 p.m. On select nights, you can explore Trail of Lights for free; tickets at other times can range from $8 for general admission up to $95, with the most expensive tickets offering special perks and experiences. Parking costs extra.

River of Lights at ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden: Albuquerque, New Mexico

Past visitors to River of Lights in Albuquerque heartily encourage others to make a stop as part of their holiday itineraries. Each year, River of Lights takes over ABQ BioPark 's Botanic Garden, allowing visitors to walk among wireframe unicorns, dinosaurs, plants and more. Depending on the day you visit, you could hear music from local bands and choirs. On select evenings there's a special event with snacks and the opportunity to meet Santa Claus. These events have additional fees and different options for families or adults 18 and older.

The event runs nightly from 5 to 10 p.m. between Nov. 25 and Dec. 30, but it's closed for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Tickets cost slightly more from Friday to Sunday depending on what day you visit. Timed ticket entry is required to visit the River of Lights, so you must purchase your tickets online in advance to select your day and time slot.

World of Illumination at Tempe Diablo Stadium: Tempe, Arizona

Price: Tickets start at $39.99 per car and must be purchased online in advance Dates: Nov. 15 to Dec. 31

Take to the stars this holiday season in Tempe, Arizona, about 10 miles east of Phoenix . As you drive through World of Illumination, you'll see bright stars, rocket ships, asteroids, and Santa and his elves as they prepare for takeoff. Travelers say the event is a memorable experience, though some wished it lasted longer as it only takes 20 to 30 minutes to drive through.

The experience welcomes visitors from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31. It is typically closed Mondays, except for Dec. 18 and 25. You can visit from 6 to 10 p.m., though World of Illumination says hours may be extended if lines are long. This event can also be found in several other cities, including Las Vegas and Salt Lake City .

Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum: Lisle, Illinois

Sitting about 25 miles west of the Millennium and Grant parks in Chicago is The Morton Arboretum. Beginning in mid-November, the arboretum decks out 50 acres with lights as music plays in the background. After walking the mile-long path – which is fully accessible for visitors with limited mobility – get a snack at the on-site refreshment tents.

Attendees 18 and older can extend the fun with late-night light displays synchronized to music at 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 8, 15, 22 and 29. Travelers say the trek is well worth it. If you're not a member, tickets – which should be purchased in advance to ensure a spot and get the best possible price – range from $16 up to $39 per adult, depending on the day and time you visit. Illumination runs from Nov. 18 to Jan. 6, with a handful of days it's not open.

An Old Time Christmas at Silver Dollar City: Branson, Missouri

Branson, Missouri, is well known for its entertainment industry, and its Old Time Christmas is no exception. The Silver Dollar City amusement park robes itself in 6.5 million lights and puts on live shows, such as "The Living Nativity" and Rudolph's Holly Jolly Christmas Light Parade, that are suitable for the whole family. There are also plenty of festive treats, shopping and rides to keep you entertained. Routine visitors to this Branson spectacle praise the festivities but warn of long lines and thick crowds. Food and drinks are not included in ticket prices.

Blossoms of Light and Trail of Lights at Denver Botanic Gardens: Denver

Price: $25 for adults at Blossoms of Light or $16 for adults at Trail of Lights; tickets must be reserved online in advance Dates: Late November to early January

Denver Botanic Gardens hosts two separate holiday events: Blossoms of Light at its York Street location near downtown Denver and Trail of Lights at its Chatfield Farms outpost in Littleton, which sits about 20 miles south of the city. At Blossoms of Light, visitors walk through the gardens to see trees and brush aglow in a kaleidoscope of colors. Meanwhile, Trail of Lights' path takes patrons to a children's play area and through illuminated tunnels. Antique tractors (also lit up) are also on display.

Paths at both locations are accessible, but the venue notes that the walkways may be icy and visitors should exercise caution if using a wheelchair or stroller. Previous viewers loved the displays, especially Blossoms of Light, which they described as a stunning spot for a Colorado date night .

A separate ticket is required for each event. Denver Botanic Gardens members, children, students and seniors receive reduced or waived admissions, depending on age and the event. Both displays open in late November and end in early January. Blossoms of Light is open between 4:30 and 9 p.m., while Trail of Lights welcomes visitors from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Snacks and refreshments are sold on-site.

Zoo Lights at Oregon Zoo: Portland, Oregon

As you might expect, Oregon Zoo 's Zoo Lights presentation depicts all kinds of critters who call the property home. Throughout the event, you'll see lit figurines that resemble everything from bears to gators to swans; you can even spot Bigfoot. Past visitors said the lights are incredible and that the event is a great family outing in Portland . This event will be a walk-through experience only in 2023, unlike previous years. Visit Nov. 17 or 18 for Brew Lights: a 21-and-older event that pairs lights with samples of local beers.

Timed tickets must be purchased online before you visit; popular nights will be the most expensive. Visitors can view the Zoo Lights display from Nov. 19 through Jan. 7 (though it closes on select dates), with entry times from about 4:30 to 8 p.m. The Zoo Lights Sensory Friendly Night will be held on Nov. 20. Refreshments are available on-site.

Enchanted Forest of Light at Descanso Gardens: Flintridge, California

No matter the time of year, travelers agree you're in for a treat at Descanso Gardens (about 15 miles north of downtown Los Angeles ), but many say its holiday light display should not be missed. You'll wander through its brilliantly lit Ancient Forest – complete with ginkgo and redwood trees – as well as fields of color-changing, flower-shaped lights. The Main Lawn will feature a stained glass village.

Descanso Gardens welcomes visitors for the display from 5:30 to 10 p.m. daily from Nov. 19 to Jan. 7. It closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Ticket prices vary depending on the day of your visit. Children younger than 2 can enter for free but still require a ticket.

The Strip isn't the only place to see lights in Las Vegas come November. Every year, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway (about 15 miles northeast of The Strip ) decks out its facility with more than 5 million lights. Although the drive-thru event is located at a track known for hosting auto racing events, Glittering Lights encourages you to drive slowly so you can enjoy as much of the spectacle as possible and snap plenty of photos.

Previous travelers raved about the event's displays and were impressed with the sheer number of lights featured. However, others felt the visit was a tad expensive. Visitors can catch Glittering Lights nightly from Nov. 9 through Jan. 7 from 4:30 to 9 or 10 p.m., depending on the day. Ticket types and prices vary, with options for add-ons or a Fast Pass. If you don't want to drive, you can take the Santa Tram on select nights.

Winter Garden aGlow at Idaho Botanical Garden: Boise, Idaho

Previous visitors said Winter Garden aGlow is one of the best Christmas light displays available in the Boise area, if not the best they've ever seen anywhere. The Idaho Botanical Garden 's annual holiday event takes up the entire complex. The path winds visitors past Santa's cottage and through the gardens. Parkgoers can enjoy new sights such as a candy cane forest, a gingerbread village and a kid-sized gingerbread house. The garden also sells snacks and warm drinks on-site to keep you extra cozy during your walk.

You can also hit the Snow Globe Bar – another 2023 addition – for festive beverages and music Thursday to Saturday (or Friday to Sunday, in the last two weeks of December). Local choirs will also be performing on select evenings. The display is viewable Wednesday through Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. between Nov. 23 and Dec. 31.

Village of Lights: Christmastown: Leavenworth, Washington

In the 1960s, Leavenworth, Washington, underwent a townwide renovation to recreate itself as a Bavarian-style village. As part of this remodel, the town put on festivals to draw tourists, and the most popular is Village of Lights: Christmastown. Each year, more than 500,000 lights adorn town buildings to create a spectacle even Santa would envy. Throughout December, you can expect a variety of festive events like Christmas carolers, live music performances, and visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus. At the Festhalle venue, you'll find everything from gingerbread houses to gift-wrapping services to holiday snacks.

If you can't make it for Christmastime, visit in January during the Winter Karneval to see ice carvings and fireworks displays or take part in wintertime sports. It's free to wander around town, but you'll likely want some spending money for the quaint shops and local eateries.

Best Christmas and Holiday Drive Thru Light Displays in Southern  California

Magic of lights, empire polo club, coachella valley (drive thru).

Magic of Lights at The Empire Polo Club in Coachella Valley is a vibrant drive-thru, holiday themed light display coming this holiday season, beginning on November 17, 2023 through December 31, 2023. Tickets are affordably priced throughout the season, at one price per carload.

Produced by Family Entertainment Lives, “Magic of Lights” will make its yearly Southern California debut at, The Empire Polo Club, featuring dozens of displays, illuminated canopies, and digital animation, all constructed with thousands of individual LED lights.

Holiday Road, King Gillette Ranch, Calabasas (Walk Thru)

Holiday Road at King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas is the premiere holiday attraction. Expansive grounds filled with eye-catching, twinkling lights and festive installations will welcome visitors as they meander through the winding trail in each city. Guests will be transported into a winter wonderland complete with everything from the North Pole,  Elf Village, Gingerbread Lane, light tunnels, Christmas tree forests, and much more!

The trail itself is a walking trail and it is self-guided. Visitors are welcome to experience the attractions at their own pace. Most guests spend one to one and a half hours in total on the grounds engaging in both our pre show area and the walking trail. Enjoy a variety of food and beverages, capture those instagrammable moments, join in the fun with interactive experiences or visit holiday bars for a seasonal cocktail to take with you on the trail!

Holiday Road takes place from Nov. 24 – Dec. 27, 2023 and is open daily from 5:00 pm to 9:30 pm.

Christmas in Color, San Dimas (Drive Thru) – Closed for 2023

Load up your friends and family into the van (or car, or truck) and experience Christmas like never before at Christmas in Color in San Dimas!  Drive through acres of more than 1.5 million lights perfectly synchronized to holiday music you’ll hear right through your radio.

You’ll drive by giant candy canes, snowmen, arched pathways and more. With so many incredible attractions and acres of land to view, you’ll want to take your time driving through this Winter Wonderland.  And starting at $35 per car, this is sure to become an instant family Christmas tradition.  The price does not increase by the number of people in your car, so the more the merrier!

This year bring the party to your car and purchase their Christmas Party Pack!  Every pack includes: (2) Light up wands, (4) Glasses, (2) Lightbulb necklaces, (2) Rudolph noses, and (1) Air Freshener.

Christmas in Color takes place from Nov. 25, 2022 – Jan. 1, 2023, and is open daily from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

Hikari Light Festival, Tanaka Farms, Irvine (Walk Thru)

Attend a rather new holiday celebration called Hikari Festival of Lights at Tanaka Farms in Irvine!  Literally translated, Hikari means shine in Japanese, and this holiday season Tanaka Farms will shine with over a mile of twinkling lights!

Grab a hot cocoa and take a cozy Wagon Ride around the festively lit farm that will take you to the “Land of a Thousand Lanterns!”    After the wagon ride, make your way down to the Festival Grounds where you can visit with the Barnyard Animals, grab some food from the Tanaka Grill, take advantage of lots of photo ops, games, Arts & Crafts, meet Santa for a photo, and, of course, more holiday lights! (all activities are priced individually.)

Enjoy live music on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights!  Parking passes are required and cost $10.

Santa’s Speedway Christmas Lights Drive-Thru, Irwindale

Opening on December 1, Santa’s Speedway is a 30-45 minute safe yet, riveting experience designed to transport families of all ages into the magical world of Christmas as they witness first-hand a series of jaw dropping Christmas scenes and holiday themed vignettes from Mobile Illuminations (the company responsible for The Grove, Universal Studios and Warner Brothers’ Christmas Extravaganzas).

As families enter Santa’s Speedway between a pathway of California’s largest color changing display of palm trees, they will experience the exhilaration of driving on an actual NASCAR racetrack as they come across Santa’s Village with at elves hard at work, a land filled with Christmas sweets including 20ft tall illuminated lollipops, Rudolph’s Enchanted garage filled with Racecar Reindeers, a 100 ft long lit Christmas bow and light display, plus a scene worthy of grabbing Santa’s attention –  the world’s largest free standing light tree, measuring 110ft and made up of over 100,000 LED lights.

Last year they added 5 new displays, twice as many lights and three full light tunnels.  The show concludes this year with a visit to Santa and his 40’ long train!  Open now through January 1, 2024.

WildLights, Living Desert, Palm Desert (Walk Thru)

Recognized in the Top 5 Best Zoo Lights by USA Today, WildLights is a magical winter wonderland, complete with twinkling lights, dazzling light displays, and holiday fun. It is the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit and make lasting memories with friends and family. Taking place Nov. 22 – Dec. 30 from 6-9 pm in Palm Desert.  Advance reservations are required.

WildLights’ pathways will take guests on an illuminated journey around the Zoo with endless awe-inspiring sights and festive photo opportunities. Guests can go for a spin on the carousel, enjoy themed treats, take a free, souvenir photo with Santa, and much more. In true WildLights tradition, the record-length G-scale model trains, with more than 3,300 feet of track, will be decked out for the holidays.

Judging from the prices, it looks like these events are just for wealthy people. I realize that they need to cover costs, but it is absurd that they charge so much during the pandemic, considering that people are just looking for something to do that is safe.

Village Square – behind Harris Teeter on 3100 Ironbound Rd in Williamsburg 23185 . This is amazing!!!! I think they increase the number of lighted balls that hang in the trees each year. Beautiful balls of different colored lights hang high in the trees.  This year more houses are decorated too. Just watch out for parked cars and people walking as you are looking up at the lights high in the trees!   My child took this video as we drove through – but really it does not do it justice! Pennsylvania is home to many incredible things to do at Christmastime , and, some of the best are the drive-through Christmas light displays scattered throughout the state.

These displays are great because you can see these lights from the comfort, safety, and warmth of your car while listening to festive Christmas music.

Here are some of the best drive-through Christmas displays in Pennsylvania to enjoy this holiday season.

(Note: These displays can get quite crowded, especially on weekends and close to Christmas. I recommend either visiting as soon as they open in the evening or visiting on a weeknight early in the season, if possible. Many are also open for a few days after Christmas.)

Hershey Sweet Lights in Hershey

Located in Hershey, PA, Hershey Sweet Lights is a festive drive-through Christmas display that you won’t want to miss.

Open to the public since 2003, Hershey Sweet Lights features a two-mile driving path behind the Hotel Hershey and is close to other holiday attractions in Hershey , including Hersheypark’s Christmas Candylane . It is said that the display contains over two million lights, making it one of the largest Christmas light displays in Pennsylvania.

Holiday Lights on the Lake in Altoona’s Lakemont Park has been delighting Central PA residents for more than two decades.

This 50-acre display features an incredible number of lights scattered around fields and on some of the park’s most popular rides. Here, you can see festive holiday scenes that are sure to delight the entire family.

Even better, nearly every bit of space is filled with lights, but it’s done in such a way that it isn’t overwhelming.

Holiday Lights on the Lake is open from November 17, 2023 through January 7, 2024.

Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland in Butler

Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland is located in Butler County in western Pennsylvania.

This light display is actually one of seven Shadrack displays in the United States. However, even though this isn’t a locally-owned Christmas attraction, it’s still a great display to visit if you are looking for drive-through Christmas lights near Pittsburgh.

Shadrack’s display is about a mile long, half of which is choreographed to music you can listen to through your radio. One highlight is the 300-foot light tunnel that you can drive through along the course.

Note that Shadrack’s is closed in 2023. I’m leaving this here hoping that this wonderful drive-through display reopens in 2024.

Joy Through the Grove at Knoebel’s

Knoebel’s Amusement Park has opened their park over the last few years for a drive-through attraction known as Joy Through the Grove .

While the park’s rides aren’t open, visitors can drive through the park and the adjacent campground to see more than 400 festive light displays.

In addition to the drive-through display, there will also be a Christmas Village where you can get out and visit Santa’s workshop, buy a Christmas tree, or try a selection of Knoebel’s famous food.

Joy Through the Grove is open from the day after Thanksgiving through December 31, 2023.

Overly’s Country Christmas in Greensburg

Overly’s Country Christmas at the Westmoreland County Fairgrounds near Greensburg, one of the most festive towns in Pennsylvania , has been a popular local attraction since the 1960s. And, while it’s primarily a walk-through Christmas attraction , a drive-through attraction was added a few years ago and you have the option of driving and walking through for 2023.

This display isn’t overly large, but visitors will enjoy some really neat light scenes, free visits with Santa, and some neat shopping opportunities. That makes this a neat spot to visit if you are looking for Christmas lights in the Laurel Highlands.

Overly’s Country Christmas is open on Thursdays through Sundays from November 16 through December 30 in 2023.

Shady Brook Farm’s Holiday Light Show in Yardley

Located in Bucks County, Shady Brook Farm’s Holiday Light Show is a popular Christmas attraction near Philadelphia .

Their light show features more than three million lights, making it among the largest light displays in the state. Visitors can either drive through the display or take a wagon ride through it.

In addition to the drive-through display, there is also a walk-through area, visits with Santa, campfires for smores, and more.

The Holiday Light Show is open from November 18, 2023 through late January.

Zoo Lights in Pittsburgh

Returning in 2023, Zoo Lights will be filling the Pittsburgh Zoo with a lot of festive cheer.

Visitors are led around the display with a self-guided audio tour, which you can listen to here if you want to get a taste of the experience before you go. While you are driving around, you won’t just see many beautiful lights, but you’ll also see special guests, like Daniel Tiger, and might even see some of the zoo’s real animals.

Zoo Lights is open from November 24-December 30, 2023.

Holiday Light Spectacular in Scranton

Every holiday season, Scranton’s Nay Aug Park comes to life with their Holiday Light Spectacular .

This is one of the few free-admission drive-through Christmas light shows in Pennsylvania (though donations are accepted).

In the park, there are more than 100 light displays and tens of thousands of lights set up to go along with Christmas music you can listen to on your radio. You can also drop off letters for Santa at his mailbox or visit with him on select nights.

In addition to the free light display, there are also a few paid activities including horse-drawn carriages, tractor-pulled hayrides, and concessions.

The Holiday Light Spectacular is open from November 18, 2023, through January 7, 2024. 

The Miracle on South 13th Street in Philadelphia

Another great free holiday display is the Miracle on South 13th Street in Philadelphia .

While this display is the shortest drive-through display (it’s only a block long) there are tens of thousands of lights decorating nearly every house on the block. There are also interactive elements, window displays, and more.

Without a doubt, this is one of the best things to do at Christmastime in Philadelphia .

These lights here are typically on every evening in December.

Holiday at Burgess in Titusville

The largest park in the northwestern PA community of Titusville comes alive every year with the Holiday at Burgess display .

This drive-through display features many fun and whimsical displays including reindeer, toys, and more scattered throughout the park. Lights are placed around both the park’s pond and playground ensuring a lot of beauty for those in this corner of Pennsylvania.

In 2023, the Holiday at Burgess Lights will be open from November 24 through December 31.

Christmas Spirit Light Show in Lancaster

Located around Clipper Magazine Stadium near downtown Lancaster, the Christmas Spirit Light Show is one of the best things to do at Christmas in Lancaster .

Drive through a holiday wonderland that’s a mile long, past many festive scenes, and through several tunnels. Even better, many of the lights are synchronized with the display’s music, which adds a lot of fun to the show.

The Christmas Spirit Light Show is open from November 24 through December 31, 2023.

Presque Isle Lights in Erie

Presque Isle State Park in Erie is one of Pennsylvania’s best parks, and in 2023, they are lighting up the park for a free drive-through Christmas light display for the third consecutive year.

Known as Presque Isle Lights , this event features light displays scattered all along the 13-mile road through this park in northwestern PA. Lights and scenes will be set up throughout much of the park so you are sure to enjoy many beautiful displays in a unique setting.

Also, keep an eye out for the beautiful nighttime skyline of downtown Erie while driving through the park after dark.

Presque Isle Lights opens to the public on December 1, 2023 and runs throughout the month.

Lights in the Parkway in Allentown

Now in its 27th year, Lights in the Parkway is a beautiful holiday light display in the Lehigh Valley.

During the Christmas season, Allentown’s Lehigh Parkway (which is a park, not a road) comes to life with hundreds of thousands of twinkling lights, festive displays, and beautiful music.

This year, Lights on the Parkway is open from November 24 through New Year’s Eve.

Herr’s Christmas Light Display in Nottingham

Located in Chester County at the Herr’s snack food factory , you’ll find the Herr’s Christmas Light Display . This display has no admission cost, so is a great option for those looking to save a bit of money.

The lights at Herr’s are scattered around the corporate campus and feature many festive sights to enjoy. In fact, it is said that there are more than 600,000 lights on display here every year.

Herr’s Christmas Lights are on from dusk to dawn from November 22, 2023 through January 2, 2024.

Cascade of Lights in New Castle

Every holiday season for more than 20 years, Cascade Park in New Castle, PA has been transformed into Cascade of Lights .

While not as large as some displays in western PA, this light show is a great value at only $5 per car admission and offers the chance to see the park’s historic buildings illuminated in beautiful lights. Of course, there are also many great light displays scattered throughout the park as well.

Visit on a Saturday in December before Christmas for free visits with Santa.

Cascade of Lights runs every Thursday through Sunday night in December (Plus the Monday-Wednesday before Christmas).

Festival of Lights in Tunkhannock

Located at the Stone Hedge Golf Course a few miles east of Tunkhannock you’ll find the Festival of Lights .

Here, cars drive a 2.5-mile path through a beautiful light display along the golf course. Drive past many lit scenes ranging from the festive to the whimsical, all of which are sure to put you in the holiday spirit.

After your drive, you can get out and explore activities like s’mores, a marketplace, and food vendors.

The Festival of Lights is open from November 22 through December 31.

The Valley of Lights in Little Mexico

The Valley of Lights is a festive drive-through display at the Little Mexico Campground in Union County, PA.

This is one of the state’s newer shows, having opened up on this popular campground in 2020. Visitors can drive through the grounds and enjoy the festive displays spread throughout the grounds. There are additional activities including crafts and letters to Santa available for visitors on Saturday evenings.

In 2023, Valley of Lights is open nights from November 24 through December 31.

Christmas Light Up Celebration in Clinton

The Christmas Light Up Celebration  is one of the lesser-known drive-through Christmas light displays near Pittsburgh. However, that makes it a great choice if you are looking to see something new or are looking to avoid the crowds at some other displays!

Christmas Light Up has been bringing festive cheer for nearly three decades and has a great one-mile driving path through a wooded setting. 

As you drive through the display, you’ll see many festive scenes and figures, as well as many beautiful Christmas trees that have been decorated for the holidays.

Christmas Light Up Celebration is open from November 18 through January 7, 2024.

Christmas Boulevard in Berwick

Berwick Christmas Boulevard can be found in the heart of Berwick in Columbia County, PA.

Unlike many other light displays on this list with gates and a ticket window, this display is set up along a public road in town. It’s still a fantastic display, however, with tens of thousands of lights and dozens of holiday displays set up along the mile-long route.

And, near the end of the display, don’t miss your bag of local potato chips!

In 2023, Berwick Christmas Boulevard will run from December 2-29.

Parade of Lights in New Castle

The Parade of Lights is located in Pearson Park in New Castle, PA.

This is a relatively small show but is very well done with a lot of similar lights to those you’d find at expensive drive-through light displays in PA. However, this one is totally free to check out.

Along the route, you’ll pass a 40-foot light tree, several moving displays, and some other really nicely decorated areas.

In 2023, the display will likely be lit from Thanksgiving night through early January 2024.

Holiday Night of Lights in Bedford

Back for its fifth season, Holiday Night of Lights turns the Bedford County Fairgrounds into a festive drive-through holiday light display.

Over 100 local businesses and organizations sponsor displays every year, creating a really unique and varied drive-through light display. And not only is this a festive event, but it also helps to raise money for educational programs in the county.

Holiday Nights of Lights is open on select nights from the day after Thanksgiving through the day after Christmas.

Allentown has a display in their park.

Dorney Park in Allentown had a most beautiful drive through that was synchronized to lights with their music radio station. It has more than 1 million lights and is 1 mile long . The lights are constant with lots of characters moving their mouths to the music. The lights are intense . It is honestly the best I’ve seen any where in PA. Rebecca Gross

Candy Cane Lane in Duboistown i would add to this list. Its a landmark thing in the area, even recognized by the commonwealth!

We strongly recommend purchasing tickets online, in advance to guarantee your reservation. This also allows you to take advantage of the best pricing, saving up to *$20 a ticket!

I repurchased a Lost Canyon ticket already, can I use that for the Christmas tour?

Due to the uniqueness and pricing difference, a regular Lost Canyon Cave & Nature Trail ticket will not be accepted for admission to the Lost Canyon Christmas tour.

During the holiday season and while the Christmas tour is operating, standard Lost Canyon tickets will not be accepted as admission for the Christmas tour. You will have to purchase a Lost Canyon Christmas ticket specifically for the holiday experience.

Can I upgrade my regular Lost Canyon ticket for the Christmas tour?

If you have already purchased a Lost Canyon Cave & Nature Trail ticket and would like to exchange it for a Christmas tour ticket, you may do so. You may either cancel your original reservation and repurchase the Lost Canyon Christmas ticket, or if you arrive on the day of your original admission, you may pay the difference for the Christmas Tour.

Please note; walk-up tickets do not guarantee a time for your tour and walk-up rates are typically higher than our online in-advance rates. For best pricing and most accurate time, please consider purchasing online in-advance.

Is my reservation time guaranteed?

We will do our best to ensure your reservation time is met. However, due to the self-guided tour and dynamic nature of the tour, these times may vary.

Can I cancel or change my reservation?

Yes! You can change your reservation day or time, however if there is a price difference in the times you will be required to pay the difference. You may also cancel your reservation, however due to reservation-based tickets, tickets not cancelled within 48 hours of reservation date are non-refundable.

Is parking included?

To park at Top of the Rock you'll need to purchase the Daily Access Pass. After 5pm the pass will be $15 for cars and $50 for vehicles with 10 or more guests. Credit card only.

Can I still visit the Museum?

Yes! A ticket to Lost Canyon Christmas still includes a same-day admission to the Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum as well! As per usual, this admission must be used on the same day as your reservation.

How long is the Lost Canyon Christmas tour?

This unique experience follows our 2.5 mile trail along the Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail. Over 12 one-of-kind lighted scenes will be on display highlighting the Ozarks rich history and Native American heritage. We estimate about an hour to an hour-and-a-half to complete the trail.

Can I get out and take pictures?

To ensure everyone’s safety on the trail at night, guests will not be allowed to get out of their carts for photos. Our team will have a photo opportunity on the trail for guests to get out with one of our staff members available to take a group picture. A digital copy of this photo will be included with your ticket price.

When does Lost Canyon Christmas start?

The Lost Canyon Christmas tour will be opening November 5th! Lights will turn on at 5pm each evening and the Lost Canyon Cave & Nature Trail will become the Lost Canyon Christmas experience!

What happens if the weather conditions are poor?

Northern Lights may be visible in these US states this weekend

Skywatchers as far south as Alabama may be in luck this weekend, as reports of severe geomagnetic storms could mean that the Northern Lights are going to be a lot more visible throughout May of 2024. With the solar maximum nearing, coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are more likely to happen, and that means more clashes between solar energy and Earth’s magnetic field are likely, too.

If you do want a chance to see these possibly unusual Northern Lights this May, then you’re going to need to find yourself a place without a lot of light pollution, as that will make things easier to spot. Those in large cities will want to travel outside of the main areas, where streetlights and buildings aren’t blocking the view.

These auroras are going to be caused by a series of solar storms, which range from minor to more severe G4 category storms (one of the rarest geomagnetic storms Earth can experience). As such, the auroras may also disturb GPS and radio communications and even possibly harm satellites in low-Earth orbit.

This is the first time that the NOAA has upgraded a storm watch to G4 since 2005. And it’s all because a giant sunspot called AR3664 keeps throwing CMEs toward Earth. With the most recent solar flare, the NOA says there are at least four storms headed our way.

Here’s How—And Where—To Watch Northern Lights Caused By Geomagnetic Storm

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a severe geomagnetic storm watch for Saturday and, as a result, much of the northern part of the country may be able to see the northern lights in an “unusual and potentially historic event.”

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the “severe level” of aurora expected ... [+] Friday night is “a very rare event.”

Geomagnetic storms happen when material erupts from the sun’s atmosphere, creating disturbances to the Earth’s magnetic fields and occasionally triggering “spectacular displays of aurora,” also known as the northern lights.

Scientists said Friday night’s aurora may be visible as far south as Alabama and Northern California, and conditions could continue through the weekend.

The geomagnetic activity of the aurora is expected to be an eight on a scale of nine on Friday night, and a five Saturday night, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center, with the line of visibility passing through Oregon, Colorado, Illinois, Pennsylvania and more.

Clear and dark skies make the best viewing conditions for the aurora, and the best time to see it is “three or four hours around midnight,” according to the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks .

The National Weather Service is forecasting fairly low cloud cover —meaning the sky will likely be clear—for much of the northern U.S., except for Michigan and Wisconsin, around 12 a.m. on Saturday.

The northern lights are happening at all times , but are not always visible. They are most frequently seen near the North Pole, and the best time of year to see them is between September and April. Scientists are able to predict when auroras will be visible by examining solar winds, though the predictions are made with fairly low confidence. According to CBS News , aurora forecasts are about as reliable as weather forecasts were in the 1950s.

What To Watch For

If the weekend’s geomagnetic storm brings any damage. G4 storms are the second-strongest kind of geomagnetic storm and are able to damage satellites and cause “widespread voltage problems” and issues with the electric power grid, radio and navigation, according to NOAA. Space weather forecaster at NOAA Shawn Dahl told the Associated Press he wouldn’t want to speculate on the damage that could occur, but said “the severe level is pretty extraordinary. It's a very rare event to happen.”
