A LOCAL FAMILY BUSINESS

We know the area intimately. Unlike foreign tour-operators,  Nicola & Alberto themselves are the bike managers and part of the guide team, all of whom live in the area. A holiday at this local establishment ensures an authentic Italian cycling experience and the hospitality will make you feel like part of the family.

3 RIDE LEVELS AND A FLEXIBLE WEEKLY PROGRAM

We have 3-4 daily guided rides to choose from, scaled for pace, distance, and level of climbing . Our terrain and our routes are varied and allow us to offer flatter rides, mountain rides and everything in between.  Our weekly program takes into consideration the number and the level of our cycling guests, the weather forecast, and special ride events and requests.

SMALL GROUPS

We keep our rides small and personal with a maximum of about 30 cyclists per day, and small groups of 5-10 cyclists per guide . Each group has an exclusive guide and sometimes two guides to lead and look after the cyclists. If you are a group of friends , you always have your private guide and a custom program .

OFFICIAL PINARELLO BIKE RENTAL CENTER

We have more than 50 Pinarello bikes for rent , including the fabulous Pinarello Dogma F Disk (or the new Dogma X ) with Shimano Di2 electronic shifting and the Pinarello Nytro eBike , among others. Additionally, we partner with several other Italian cycling companies (Ale’ kits, Vittoria tires), to provide you with an authentic Italian experience.

ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE ON YOUR SCHEDULE

There are no fixed days for your arrival and departure . You can plan your own itinerary and start and end your cycling holiday when and as you wish.

PERFECT LOCATION FOR TRAVELERS AND NON CYCLISTS

We are located within a reasonable distance to all the main airports of Northern Italy: Milan, Verona, Bergamo, Venice . The train station is one block from the hotel, making sightseeing and travel to and from other areas of Italy easy.

The city of Romeo and Juliet with its Renaissance palaces, the Roman arena and many cosy places invite you to stay for a stroll. Great to have one hotel as a home base

Lake Garda was beautiful and we enjoyed staying in Desenzano. Our hotel in Desenzano was in the perfect location, right on the water and close enough to the old town to walk to dinner.

The day trips for biking out of Desenzano were variable in terms of how much we enjoyed them. We really liked Verona but the biking back from Verona was not very enjoyable because of the traffic and a lot of not very scenic areas. However, the day we rode to Brescia, another city, was a good biking day as the route we were on had pretty good cycling infrastructure that kept us separated from cars even though we were entering the city. There was, however, on that day a closed road that we had to navigate around. Luckily with both google maps and ride with gps we were able to find a good alternate route to get around the closure. We used rides with gps to navigate the routes provided by the tour company rather than their app as rides with gps allowed us to enter our individual hotel and ride directly there. It was also better with turn by turn directions. The tour literature said that their app would work on airplane mode if you downloaded the maps ahead of time, we didn’t find that to be the case. Also, their app tended to lose where we were while rides with gps did not lose us.

Our favorite riding day was the day we rode a loop route in the countryside without a city destination. Lots of nice scenic views without having to negotiate city traffic.

One day I had a problem with my e-bike, it wouldn’t change power levels, so I called the emergency number and they wanted me to call the guy who manages the bikes but since we were out on the tour I asked if she could call him for me. She said she would and that he would call me back. He never called back. The next day one of our group decided not to ride so I used her bike. However, there were several other bikes that had been delivered. I called the emergency number again later that day to say that I had not gotten a call back but that several bikes had been delivered and was one of them for me. She didn’t know but again told me to call the guy who manages the bikes. This time I did call him and he seemed to imply that the bike that said reserved was for me. We had a little bit of a language barrier. So, the next day I rode the reserved bike and all was good. All of that to say it would be great if the tour company could work on their communication with customers. The replacement bike for me was apparently there the morning after I called but I didn’t know that.

All in all it was a good trip and we saw some wonderful sites from Lake Garda to Verona to Brescia and in the countryside.

Poor route info

While the company rep was great, the app and route map only worked the middle 3 days. First day we had a transfer to Trento, a rather rushed fitting of bikes, then told to just follow the bike path to Riva de Garda, “ it’s easy, you won’t get lost”. Well, we were lost, and we experienced with self guided bike tours. There was no meeting to discuss the use of the app before we took off riding, but then there was no GPS either. Lucky we paid for an international phone plan, I used it to get us to the town. Others on this same tour ended up MILES away from where they should have been. They gave us a booklet with written directions that were totally useless as there was no starting point. One direction said start over the bridge, there was no bridge anywhere near our hotel. The riding was basically on bike path, so very easy. Lots of dirt and rocks and stones as well. The bikes were “ok” but seemed older. I had to switch out my e-bike as the battery wouldn’t detach. The replacement bike I was given had a slow leak in the back tire, so we had to pump it up during the ride. While the scenery is beautiful, and the riding enjoyable, I don’t recommend the tour company used in Italy

Riding Lake Garda

It was a great trip and the hotel and local setting were wonderful. Our experience in getting assistance from the local partner, however, was not satisfactory. We had to contact them a couple times about bike needs and malfunctions. The "hotline" is merely place that tell you who else to call. Their communication to resolve issues was horrible.

There should be more detail about some aspects for the ride. One thing is the availability of public toilet facilities. On at least one ride, there were none.

Also, the route info was often a problem. It was at time not accurate. You should sonderusing using Rides with GPS, which was a better option.

Beautiful Garda landscapes, but some discomforts

Having had many tours with daily changing hotels, I liked this time this one based on one hotel. The daily tours were mostly beautiful landscapes, and also some very attractive human creations, especially Verona. Some problems still: the quality of bike lanes varied from very well made and clearly marked to muddy dirt roads and at some places within hard traffic. On the first day there was a mess on returning from Riva del Garda, most of the group missing the boat because of problems with bike transportation. The EuroBike app was really good and showed clearly the way and its quick turns.

Gorgeous Lake Garda!

Disclosure: I went on a small portion of this tour as a BikeTours.Com Staff Member.

I was lucky enough to arrive to the start of my tour in Sirmione by a relaxing 4-hour ferry ride from town of Riva. Since this tour is based out of one hotel, you have ultimate flexibility in spending your cycling vacation in Lake Garda the way YOU want to! The daily rides are fairly short and will give you plenty of time to experience the local cuisine and culture. Since I only had one day to cycle in Lake Garda, I was recommended by the tour company staff member at my welcome briefing to cycle to Brescia. The ride to Brescia took me through quiet cycle paths to beautiful and picturesque countrysides. Just from this day’s ride, I would say 90% of this day’s ride was on cycle paths, with 10% being on quiet roads. This tour was Level 2, but being a first timer, I had no issues cycling the few hills I encountered during my ride to and from Brescia. For those who want a more relaxed ride, I’d highly recommend the eBike as it gives you power when you really need it! The one provided on this tour was in top condition and well-constructed. I took this tour at the beginning of October and it was perfect weather to cycle in the cool morning yet still enjoy the warm water of Lake Garda during the day. I would recommend this tour to first-time travelers and those who’d like to spend a few days exploring beautiful Lake Garda!

We had an amazing time on our Lake Garda trip. We were two people who have never done something like this before, but once we got the hang of things it was a dream. The first day (Trento) was tough because we got caught up with the spectacular scenery and forgot to take breaks and refuel. But the following days we got better at stopping at certain intervals to drink and eat. We also did not understand at first from our contact person what the signs look like. They are stickers on signposts, and looking out for those helped at more complex intersections. We did not use the written directions at all - we just brought with us two bike mounts, put our phones there, and followed along on the app. You just follow the pink line on the map, and most of the time the bike path is very clear and straightforward anyways. A final tip: we skipped Solferino and went to Sirmione for a day (we were based in Desenzano). Sirmione is a must-see for sure, so we were glad we did that. It is a very short ride (around 8-9 km).

This was our fourth family European cycling holiday with Bike Tours and our first in Italy. We loved being based in the same hotel so could settle in for the week. The location on the shore of Lake Garda was beautiful and it was so pleasant in the evening to be able to stroll into Desenzano for dinner, with lots of restaurants 5-10 mins walk away. The cycling itself wasn't as scenic as we'd experienced in Austria and Slovenia, and we missed the stunning views of the mountains we'd had in those countries (while still on relatively flat routes). The day cycling from Trento to the north of Lake Garda was the exception. That day was the best, though take a book for the very long ferry ride back to Desenzano. And make sure you know where the ferry departs from in Riva before you settle in for lunch. It's a long way from where you first reach the lake. We found the printed directions frequently inadequate and relied heavily on our phones for accurate navigation so make sure you have a data plan that covers Europe. If you want to have time to explore Verona properly then build an extra day into the itinerary, leave the bikes behind and take the train round trip. We sacrificed the ride to Brescia, opting instead to have a full day cycling to and exploring Sirmione, which was definitely worth it. The castle has great views. The small town is swarming with tourists but few venture beyond the vicinity of the castle. There are amazing Roman ruins and swimming areas on the north tip of the peninsula so take a towel.

Loved our bike tour in Lake Garda, Italy!

We had the best time on our bike trip! It is based out of one hotel (which is on the lake and we swam everyday after biking). We did 3 of the 5 tours due to a limited amount of time. The guy that brought our bikes was friendly, and on the first day one of the bikes broke so he brought another bike without any problem. The only problem was the first day and 1 1/2 we were lost all the time because we couldn't find the signs and the written instructions were bad (and the "app" is just a map, it doesn't give instructions). But once we started finding the signs, it was a blast. The scenery is gorgeous (vineyards, lake, towns, etc etc). Such a great trip!! We also were able to purchase helmets which we kept as a fun momento.

Group of friends

Hotel was very good and the staff also. Italy is so beautiful and charming.

Hot hot hot

We knew that things can get very hot in Italy on august, so in 2012 me and my wife decided to book a Tour, where it is possible either cycle, or just spend time on the beach, if its too hot. We have heard that Lake Garda, and the hole area is very nice, so this Tour seemed perfect. We flew from Helsinki to Milano, then we had a train, approximately 2 hours, from Milano to Lake Garda. Our hotel was nice little family hotel in Desenzado, with a nice little own beach. On the first day our tour-operator came to meet us and brought our bicycles, maps and other equipment. As you know, it can be very hot, but its never too hot to cycle. Every morning we started from the hotel, and we had a nice cycling in the area. One day we took a train to Torino, and we cycled back, 80 km, temperature was 38 C, 100 F. Best day we had, was when our tour operator took us with a van to Trento. From Trento we cycled to Riva, in the north part of Lake Garda, and in Riva we took bicycles to a ferry, witch took us back to Dezensano. This is very easy Tour to recommend for anyone. If you don"t want to cycle, you can just relax and enjoy your holiday, good food and wine, and atmosphere.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

hotel bike tours italy

A’QTO specialises in hosting immersive Italian cycling tours for serious, recreational cyclists.  Led by an Australian-Italian team who are based 6 months in Melbourne, Australia and 6 months in Chianti, Tuscany, we bring together the ultimate holiday for our many international guests who are seeking the exhilaration of superbly designed Italian rides and the indulgence of great local food and wine. Every detail curated to deliver an unforgettable and joyous Italian experience

OUR COMMITMENT

Our name calls upon us to deliver every moment of our tours with the most discerning of minds – exactly what our Italian heritage and passion for cycling have gifted us to do.

Our philosophy is that with challenge, you find reward. All of our trips are designed for cyclists and are physically challenging, but some more so than others. From an Italy perspective, the Giro d’Italia tour would be the toughest, with L’Eroica and Piemonte less demanding overall. With our Weekend Escapes and Australian Adventures, we often balance the difficulty level to include one challenging day, followed by a less challenging day – depending on the group. On all of our trips, our guides encourage and support riders to step up to their own challenge and go slightly beyond their usual level of riding. Each individual trip is rated for difficulty and to help you decide if it’s right for you, please talk to us anytime.

When you’re riding with A’QTO, you’ll always have at least one ride guide on the road with the group, and most often, there will be two guides. To manage varying levels of fitness, we often break into two groups with a guide leading each small group. There will also be a mechanic with a full tool kit and spare parts not far away – usually in a support car behind the group and sometimes in a very nearby town. Your guides and mechanics will be able to help you out with ride food and drink, as well as local knowledge, first aid, and even a hand to push you up the hill if you feel you need it. They’ll do everything they can to keep you and your bike on the road but, if for any reason you need it, there will always be a seat in the support vehicle.

Yes, you can either rent or buy a bike through us in Italy.

For our Giro d’Italia Tuscany, Puglia and Piemonte tours, we have access to a range of highly spec’d carbon  hire bikes and for L’Eroica, we can also arrange very good quality steel vintage bikes for rent. If you would like to rent a bike, please let us know when you book so we can guarantee the right size is available. Please also send us your fit measurements, so our mechanics can set up the bike for you, ready for the start of your trip. If you’re renting a bike, you need to remember to bring your helmet, pedals and saddle to your trip start.

If you would like to buy a bike in Italy, we can assist with custom made carbon or steel frame bikes by Stelbel or Formigli, master frame builders in Italy with whom we partner. To have a custom made bike made available for pick-up when you’re in Italy, we require 6 months notice to facilitate your bike build.

If you would like to buy a Steel Vintage Bike for L’Eroica, we have a very trusted source whom we recommend highly. Talk to us when booking.

We believe accommodation is a significant factor in your overall enjoyment of a trip so we always ensure high quality accommodation is included, with bathrooms and showers available per room – whether in Australia or Italy, your own bathroom is guaranteed.

Depending on the locations, we stay in very good quality three-star-chalets or villas, through to small boutique hotels and sometimes, grand five-star hotels. We like to also have access to a kitchen so that we can entertain our guests with a blend of home-cooked dinner parties, often co-hosted with our hosts and using beautiful local produce, alongside dining in some superb restaurants.

All of our trips include the option of some off-the-bike activities as we believe a big part of the enjoyment of a trip is to experience and appreciate the local areas we stay in, as well as riding across their amazing terrain. From wine tastings to must see sights and local cultural experiences, to exploring the villages and towns we are in, we like to include options for you to explore should you choose to. On all tours, you will always have free time post-ride and your choice of activity can often also include massages and visiting wellness centres, therapeutic pools and saunas in and around our accommodation.

Cycling Puglia & Matera

Great trip. I should have gotten the electric bike. The hills were too difficult for me and a couple of the distances too long. I rode in the van a bit on 3 of the days. Fantastic guide and enjoyable travel companions. I do wish we started earlier in the morning so we would get to destination earlier in the day.

A Fantastic Journey- Tuscany Small Group Cycling Tour

This tour exceeded my expectations, on so many levels. The riding was wonderful, the countryside was glorious, the food was outstanding....but the attention to detail, from guides Luca and Rikki, was just phenomenal. If you want to tour Tuscany by bike, in a way that make you feel totally connected to the area, book this trip! It will not disappoint!

Pisa - Cinque Terre

A great cycling vacation! The individual stages were well chosen (route, length, landscape, hotels) and the navigation has largely worked very well. With the slopes, especially in the heat, a good condition or possibly an e-bike is required.

Veneto Bike & Boat Tour

Veneto Bike & Boat

From beautiful Venice, we cycled on a couple of Venice's outer islands then along the Po to lovely Mantova, and stayed aboard a super comfortable barge. With a mixed group of nationalities, 2 great guides and amiable crew, comfortable bikes and delicious food on board, this was a great experience. I'm not really a cyclist so was a bit nervous, but there was no need as the route is flat. I'm also not usually a group trip type of person, but really enjoyed the experience.

Surrounded by three different regions (Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige), Lake Garda is the largest body of water in Italy , and is even able to captivate cyclists with the sense of stillness and serenity it conveys. A testament to this are the thousands of cyclists who, throughout the year, rush to the northern banks of the lake to enjoy a holiday on the back of their bike.

The clear, fresh waters of the lake are, in fact, surrounded by postcard-worthy vistas within the verdant hills, where Monte Baldo and Monte Tremalzo soar a short distance away.

Garda Lake

Tortellini di Valeggio

Produced rigorously by hand according to tradition, tortellini are characterised by a thin sheet of pasta and a meat filling. You can enjoy them in broth or seasoned with melted butter and sage. Every year on the third Tuesday of June, tortellini are honoured by a grand festival that takes place on the Visconteo Bridge.

Brodo bruciato (Burnt broth)

A thick broth prepared with water, toasted flour and extra virgin olive oil from Garda. Depending on how much the flour has been toasted, the broth will be lighter or darker in colour.

Carne salada (Cured meat)

Lean, pre-seasoned meat to be eaten raw and thinly sliced, or more thickly sliced and dipped in olive oil with a few drops of vinegar, then cooked on the grill and served on a warmed plate with beans or Torbole broccoli.

History & Culture

The hinge between Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige, Lake Garda is surrounded by moraine hills that give softness to the landscape. From the highest points it’s possible to get an idea of the relationship between the mountains and the hills, whose profile of a circular shape seems to embrace the southern part of the lake.

This tour was a great way for me to be introduced to cycling, while also challenging myself. I loved the integration of food/ cycling for this tour as it allowed me to be more immersed in the culture and more immersed in the views. I saw the country in a different lens (due to the cycling aspect) and I will certainly do this again! You guys did an amazing job planning. I felt like I didn't have to lift a finger with my luggage, my bikes, etc... The food was INCREDIBLE. I am so happy to have eaten at so many awesome places that I would not have been able to find on my own.

hotel bike tours italy

Stefano Giuliodori Director and cyclist

THE FIRST ITALY BIKE HOTEL IN RICCIONE

Everyone has a story that deserves to be told.  At the Dory, you’re part of a story linked to the road, to traditions and to friendship. We like to laugh, surprise ourselves and discover routes on the border between Romagna, the Marche and Tuscany.  It’s a story that has involved people from all over the world. Cyclists with whom we’ve shared our passion for bicycles, for great food and for feeling good.  It’s a story that’s written every day and we can write the next page together.

TYPE OF HOLIDAY

Cycling experiences.

We’ve got three different activities for you, each with a world waiting to be discovered; the programmes and bikes are different, but the passion remains the same .

RACING BIKE

What we like about ourselves, everyone is special in their own way.  .

In our opinion, what you find here are the things that make the Dory a unique place on the Riviera. It's kind of what makes us different.  By this, we don't mean that we’re better than anyone else or better at doing this or that. As Forrest Gump said: "No one is better than anyone. Everyone is special in their own way."  Here you’ll find how we do things.

THE TERRITORY

Where we go cycling .

We’re in Riccione, in Emilia-Romagna. We have the sea and there’s a delightful inland area with wonderful villages dotted on the hillsides. And that’s exactly where we cycle, surrounded by all that beauty.

FREE BIKE SERVICES

A cyclist's paradise .

In over twenty years of excursions, we’ve designed an ideal system of services for cyclists. Come and discover them all! And if you have any suggestions, we're all ears, we can't wait to improve.

SCOTT BIKE RENTAL

The largest in italy .

More than 150 Scott bikes available, with new models added every year to guarantee the highest possible quality. We’ve got Racing, Gravel, Cycle touring, MTB, Electric and Junior bikes. You'll simply be spoilt for choice.

FOR NON-CYCLISTS

Programme for non-cyclists .

Nordic walking, tastings and boat trips: these are just some of the activities designed especially for non-cyclists. One thing’s for certain, you won’t have time to get bored.

HOTEL DORY & SUITE

Your home for the next few days.

Home has a different meaning for everyone, it’s an intimate feeling. For us, home means a warm welcome and friendliness. Something more than a comfortable room and a soft pillow; something that feels like yours.

6 best cycling tours in Italy

Italy is an amazing country for a holiday, so planning an Italian bike tour is especially exciting.

However the truth is that there are a lot of Italy bike tours to choose from – and comparing them when you’re bouncing from website to website isn’t easy. In fact it can be pretty frustrating!

So, we’ve picked out six of the best Italian cycling tours that we know of from both working with cycling tour operators in Italy and our own research, and we’ve put together this article. We hope it will make it much easier for you to plan your getaway.

Before you dive into this, make sure you’ve read our destination guide for Italy as well as our pick of favourite places to cycle in Italy , so you know where you want to go. And we’ve got a separate article on self-guided cycling tours in Italy , cycling hotels in Italy – and also a different guide for luxury tours if that’s more what you’re looking for. Finally, if you’re looking for a women-only bike tour of Sardinia , read this.

Otherwise, here are the top cycling Italy tours that we’ve come across.

This article includes details of services that we have used ourselves or which we would consider using. Some are paid adverts. Please read our disclosure policy for further information.

The information in this guide is based on each tour operator’s website. We’ve done everything we can to make sure it’s accurate, but please double-check any details with them when you book, as something may have changed or the website may be inaccurate.

Prices are typically based on two people sharing a room, and a single supplement may apply if you travel alone. We’ve summarised what is normally included but individual tours may vary.

Since 2023 we have worked with Gusto Cycling on our guide to cycling Tuscany .

Italy cycling tours – a comparison

Gusto cycling.

gustocycling.com

Where do the tours start?

The company runs a number of tour of Italy cycling options, some of which are based around races/events including Maratona dles Dolomites, Strade Bianche, and L’Eroica. The main cycling holidays are 7-night self-guided tours of Tuscany beginning in either Lucca or Siena.

Just Italy or other destinations too?

Gusto Cycling purely focuses on cycling tours in Italy (and Tuscany to be precise!).

How many years have they run cycling tours in Italy for?

The website states that Gusto Cycling has “over 10 years” experience in running tours.

How many tour dates do they offer each year?

There are no set dates, except for those based on cycling events/races. You can choose whenever you wish to book.

What’s the maximum group size?

The biggest group size that you can select when making an online enquiry is eight, although it’s worth emailing the team if you have a bigger group as they may be able to accommodate you.

How much does a 4 day trip cost?

A 4-day trip around Montecatini Terme starts at £417 per person, based on two sharing a room.

How much does a 7 day trip cost?

A 7-day trip around Tuscany starts at £1,359 per person –  the prices are the same whether you book the Tuscany North or Tuscany South itineraries.

What’s included?

On every tour you’ll enjoy quality accommodation, carefully chosen by the Gusto Cycling team. Each hotel will include a buffet breakfast. You’ll get a hybrid bike to use for the duration, including helmets, water bottles and repair kits. A luggage service is included, and you’ll be given tailored GPS routes. Every day you can check in with Marco, who runs Gusto Cycling, for tips and guidance.

Do they offer bespoke trips?

Every trip offered by Gusto Cycling is bespoke – there are no set days, and if you have any special requests then Marco will do everything he can to cater for you.

Any other notes?

There are a number of special one-day tours available if you happen to be in Italy and want to go exploring, or you could add them onto your itinerary when you plan a longer cycling break.

Marco, the owner of the website, was born in the UK but his family are from Montecatini Terme and so he has a deep understanding of the region.

If it’s a Florence bike tour, you’re after, you’ll need to go bespoke – the Tuscany itineraries stick to smaller towns nearby.

Italy Bike Tours

italybiketours.com

Italy Bike Tours has a huge selection of tour options right the way through the country, including on Sardinia and Sicily.

Despite the company name, they do offer cycling breaks around the rest of the world too, including the French and Austrian Alps, tours of Slovenia, and a Colombia cycling tour.

Their website doesn’t reveal this information, although they’ve been in existence for more than three years, based on their reviews on Google.

There are many tour dates throughout the year between March and October – individual tours have different seasonal times, but most have at least the option of three different months.

Most of the tours have a maximum group size of 12, but some can accommodate 16 or 18 riders.

There are no 4-day trips – the shortest is a 5-day/4-night trip across the Alps that starts from €1,099 per person.

Marked as the company’s “Best Value” trip, a 7-day Climbers Week tour through Lombardia starts at €1,649. Some of the other 7-day trips do cost twice that, though.

You’ll stay in 4* (or better) accommodation with breakfast and dinners included. Bike hire is included, and you’ll be led by an experienced guide, with mechanical support and a support vehicle to back you up. Off-bike programmes are included too, along with private transfers.

Yes, you can book a bespoke cycling tour of Italy – just drop the company an email to start planning your trip.

You’ll get a gift bundle when you book your Italy bike tour, including branded water bottle, cycling jersey and cap, a bag, a fruit bar and an energy drink.

The company is based in Italy and led by a former Grand Tour winner.

Gran Fondo packages are available.

ciclismoclassico.com

There are over 30 tour itineraries available covering some of the best bike tours Italy has to offer, including a huge range of destinations across Tuscany, Umbria, the Dolomites, Sicily and more.

The company offers cycling breaks across Europe and in several locations around the US east coast and into Canada.

Ciclismo Classico has been running cycling tours since 1989.

There are a wide number of dates available for each tour through the spring, summer and autumn.

There isn’t any information on the site about maximum group sizes.

There are no 4-day trips, but a 5-day trip starts from $4,500 per person.

Prices vary but the cheapest 7-day tours start from $4,295 per person.

You’ll always stay in 4* or 5* hotels, B&Bs and family inns. Breakfast is always included, along with some lunches and most dinners. You’ll be provided with snacks and drinks throughout. Luggage handling and private transfers are included too. You’ll be offered a choice of bike suitable to your tour, with a Garmin GPS. Van support is given where needed and you’ll benefit from an experienced guide. Tours also include off-bike experiences such as wine tasting, museum visits and cooking demos.

Yes, bespoke trips are available.

The company has a reputation for quality, creativity and providing authentic holidays that immerse riders in the culture of the region.

If a tour doesn’t reach a minimum of 6 participants, you’ll either be offered to remain on that tour and pay a $500 supplement, or you’ll be offered the chance to move to a different tour.

Tours are graded either Easy, Athletic Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced.

Despite the company name, not all tours are cycling breaks – be sure to check as some are exclusively hiking tours.

Trek Travel

trektravel.com

There are several tours available across the Dolomites and the Alps, some of which cross into Slovenia. The starting point varies for each tour.

Trek Travel offers tours all over Europe, and around the rest of the world as well, including North and South America, and Asia Pacific.

It’s not clear exactly how long they’ve been running tours in Italy, but the company has existed as part of the Trek Bicycle Corporation since 1975.

There are a large number of dates you can choose from throughout the year.

Typically group sizes are around 12 to a maximum of 24, but some trips may go up to 30 or more.

The shortest trip offered by Trek Travel for a trip biking through Italy is 5 days/4 nights, and that starts at $1,499 per person.

Most of the bike tours of Italy organised by Trek Travel last 6 days, but a 7 day trip starts at $5,499 per person.

Every tour includes your hotel stays in minimum 3-star hotels, although many are 4-star or better. You’ll get breakfast every day, and most of your breakfasts and lunches along with snacks. You’ll be given a bike to use, and you’ll get any transfers for yourself and your luggage that you need. Guided tours come with expert guides, while self-guided tours offer you a selection of riding routes with a GPS.

Yes – if none of the existing dates or itineraries work for you then you can request a tailor-made trip, although bear in mind the prices may be higher.

Trek Travel is well known, and has been named as one of the World’s Best Tour Operators by the Travel & Leisure Magazine on several occasions, including in 2022.

There are different styles of holiday to suit those looking for a luxury break or something a little cheaper and more rugged.

The company is based in the US (Wisconsin, specifically) but does work across the world for its tours. There’s also a loyalty program if you intend to use them for multiple trips.

The company has been offering cycling tours since 1979.

There are well over 15 different tour options, and each of them have a variety of dates available throughout the spring, summer and autumn seasons.

Backroads will be able to cater to any group size, but the usual limit is around 20 people.

There aren’t any 4-day Italian cycling holiday options.

All of the biking tours offered by Backroads last for 6 days/5 nights. The cheapest options start from $3,999 per person, ranging up to around $5,500 per person. Single person supplements range from $600 upwards.

You’ll get your accommodation (some tours are designated as luxury and will have better-quality hotels), breakfast, some lunches and dinners, your bike hire and luggage transfers. You’ll also get a support vehicle and there will be special events included on most tours.

Backroads can cater to bespoke bike Italy tours for group sizes up to 30 people.

As well as straightforward cycling holidays in Italy, the company offers multi-adventure tours which can include walking and boating. You can book an itinerary that includes a cruise around the Adriatic, with various shorter cycling trips at different destinations in Italy and Croatia.

The company is US-based.

Final thoughts

If you want to tour Italy by bike, these companies offer some excellent choices. However, we’re conscious that most of the companies on our list aren’t based in Italy – and many are focused on the North America market.

We’d love to add others to this list!
