Incubus is an American rock band from Calabasas, California and currently consists of Brandon Boyd, Mike Einziger, Jose Pasillas, Chris Kilmore and Ben Kenney.

Incubus was formed in 1991 by vocalist Brandon Boyd, guitarist Mike Einziger, bassist Alex Katunich and drummer Jose Pasillas, while the members were in high school. Incubus influences include Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Red Hot Chili Peppers and their sound crosses the genres of alternative rock, heavy metal, funk and electro. For a while the band were nameless, until being asked to provide one for an upcoming show and Incubus was born from there on. They cut their teeth at some of the most infamous venues on the Los Angeles Sunset strip including The Roxy and The Troubadour.

The band had to juggle early recordings around their school work, but in 1995 they completed their first two song EP with producer Gavin Koppell. They released their first album 'Fungus Amongus' on their own label before later signing to Immortal Records which became Epic Records. In 1997, the band supported Korn on their European tour and promoted their first major label release, the six track 'Enjoy Incibus' EP.

The band spent a whole year touring their second album 'S.C.I.E.N.C.E' and thanks to radio and TV exposure, it went on to sell over 100,000 copies. This laid the foundations for the critically acclaimed release of 'Make Yourself' which has now been certified double platinum in the States and featured their first hit single 'Drive' which cracked the top 10 of the Billboard Charts. After this release, the band continued to go from strength to strength with their releases, they toured the world over and over promoting the likes of 'Morning View' and 'A Crow Left of The Murder...' which saw their chart success increase in countries such as the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Their 2006 release 'Light Grenades' topped the US Billboard charts and played huge sets at festivals worldwide including Download, Rock Am Ring and Pinkpop.

In 2008 the band took a short hiatus to concentrate on family, education and general life. On March 11, 2009, Incubus posted an update to their official site detailing the new Greatest Hits album 'Monuments and Melodies' which charted at #5 on the US Billboard Charts when it was released on June 16 2009. They posted a photograph of themselves working in the studio in 2014 which would allude to a new album being released imminently whilst they have confirmed they will be attending Australia's SoundWave music festival in 2015.

Live reviews

The first time I saw Incubus, at Soma in San Diego, they were opening for 311. The second time was at the same venue, opening for Sublime, less than a month later. They were a funky metal(ish) band back then. I liked them enough to buy their Fungus Amongus tape, but not enough to buy their mushroom t-shirt. I predicted Sublime would have a long, prosperous career, but I didn’t think Incubus would ever make it beyond Southern California. Bradley Nowell was dead less than six months after that show, but Brandon Boyd, Mike Einziger and Dirk Lance would end up on world-wide tours, supporting radio-friendly, double-platinum albums chalk full of #1 hits. I had quit listening to the radio well before Make Yourself and Morning View, but only the deaf could have avoided songs like “Drive”, “Pardon Me”, “Nice To Know You” and “Stellar”. Incubus became a respectable chart-topping band that barely resembled what was represented on their first albums. I honestly never really followed them, and I kind of assumed it was Deftones who filled Red Rocks last night, but when the giant clock hit 0:00 and the band revealed themselves with “Wish You Were Here”, I realized they were completely capable of the headlining slot. - See more at: http://ilistensoyoudonthaveto.com/2015/08/25/incubus-deftones-red-rocks-08-24-15/#sthash.XkzNw0VQ.dpuf

Incubus is a band that has been around for a long time. Every single person who has any interest in music at all should know at the very least, one song by these guys. They are a must see for any music fan, anywhere. Incubus has reached the stage in their career where they only play large venues, but they are still one of the best shows around.

They always sound fantastic, they always play the hits, and they always throw in a many deeper cuts for the true fans. You could see them play any song they've ever released (besides stuff on Fungus Amongus) on any given night. Incubus' sound has matured beautifully from their funk/nu-metal roots to the most cutting edge, blissful, indie rock. Most of the time, bands will only play stuff off their first few, or most recent few records. Incubus shows no discretion to playing from a certain phase they have gone through. "It's Just A Phase". Many times, a heavy funk rock song will be sandwiched between an indie rock ballad and a pop rock radio hit. The possibilities of Incubus' setlist remain endless and unknown which is something that seems to be dying in the so called "Music Industry", and that is what makes them one of the most explosive artists out there from 1991 to present day.

I was fortunate enough to go to the December 1, 2019 concert at the Kravis Center and it was the best show that I have been to, easily. They played the Make Yourself album front to back and then said “we’re just gonna keep playing more songs” and played an insanely good playlist.

The sound inside of the Kravis Center seemed perfect. I would never expect Incubus to play at such a small venue but it’s obvious that they genuinely care and take pride in playing a show that sounds amazing. I’ve never seen such a big and popular band play their hearts out like they did. They genuinely care.

After their last encore the crowd chanted “one more song” and the band came back our and concluded with “Wish You Were Here.” Everybody in the building was standing up and screaming. I saw 2 people leave before Wish You Were Here. I had never seen anything like it in my life.

I’m so thankful to incubus for playing in my home town. I’m curious why they came to West Palm Beach and would love to know what I can do to get them to come back.

We love you Incubus! Thank you!

Although Incubus have been touring and recording for over twenty years, there is still a huge demand to see this American Alt-rock band perform live and hear their cult tracks. Although the band has never had any real commercial 'hit' singles, you would think every track on their setlist reached number one with the sound of the audience shouting back the lyrics.

This band have a devoted and loyal fan base and from the opening riffs of 'Quicksand' to the final reverberations of 'A Crow Left of the Murder' the quintet are supported by a 1,000 strong backing choir. The technical abilities they showcase through the show is really impressive, extending instrumentals and altering tracks makes for an engaging show rather than simply chugging through a traditional setlist.

'Anna Molly' gets a great cheer from the crowd as the band capitalise on the enthusiasm and really go all out and throw themselves into the performance. Whilst encore track 'If Not Now, When?' evokes another huge rapture of applause as the outro fades.

A thoroughly disappointing evening.

They went through the motions after arriving 45 minutes late to the stage.

I've seen them four times before, but not since 2005 and now I remember why.

The lack of songs from the 90s era albums was a real let down - especially after Brandon Boyd said that some "old songs" would be played.

There was one song from SCIENCE and a couple from Make Yourself. It wasn't nearly enough.

I hate it when bands play little from the albums that got them where they are. It alienates old school fans.

The newer material played was bland and repetitive.

It was advertised as "An Evening With Incubus" but was barely 90 minutes.

I thoroughly enjoyed this show. I've been waiting 20 years for and it was well worth the wait. They played the entire Make Yourself album from start to finish and it sounded magnificent. This album is what turned me on to them initially when I was just starting high school, so it brings back many great memories. Incubus never disappoints and this show was no different, in that regard. They played about 6 or 7 songs after they were finished playing Make Yourself, including a new one I hadn't heard yet. I'm excited about new music from these guys because they are hands down my favorite band of all time.

A visually appealing concert (and I'm not talking about the shirtless frontman), brings the Make Yourself album to life for its 20th anniversary celebration. Add ons as Warning, from Morning View, No Fun, from 8, and Into the Summer, EP released last August, make the experience go beyond Make Yourself and make you feel you need more from those albums as well.

Not kidding, I could go for the same concert again and again without getting sick of it. Praying for a Morning View Anniversary tour and for the Gods to give long life to this band that represents a whole generation.

Most surreal night of my life. Incubus put on an amazing show as always! They sounded great, lights were beautiful, Set list was nice! I can't pick a favorite part of their performance, I enjoyed every moment. Vitamin and sick dad little world were epic! But so was everything else. I left in a trance. Only thing I can say is I'd love to see them in a more intimate environment, and touring on their own so they get more stage time. Definitely a show worth seeing, and I would experience it as many times as life will allow me!

If looking around at a packed pavilion isn't proof enough of a great show, the energy for this concert definitely gave it away! The visualizations and light effects for both Deftones and Incubus were amazing. Everything was coordinated with the roar of the music and it felt like we too, were a part of the vibrations. Incubus, as the last band standing, did not disappoint with their set. They put on an thrilling performance, one that I would happily see again.

Awesome!!! But too short... With no opening act, and without the pressure of having to live up to the set the deftones has been playing in other shows, I thought they'd play longer... The crowd was great, the night was perfect and it had all the makings of a truly special show... But they only played their established set list from the coheadling tour with the deftones... It was fantastic, don't get me wrong, but they could have done more!!!

On October 6, 2023, the band announced the re-recording and re-release of the acclaimed double album entitled Morning View XXIII  (Virgin Music Group), which is set for an album release date of May 10 th , 2024.  Morning View XXIII preorders will begin alongside the general tour on sale this Friday, February 9th, and you can presave HERE .

“Roughly 23 years ago we rented a house at the sea to do an art experiment. The novel and expansive environment combined with a healthy dose of momentum helped us find that ever sought after FLOW state and the songs that became known as ‘Morning View’ have since become indelible and deeply important parts of our lives,” said Brandon Boyd.

“This album helped propel our little art experiment called ‘Incubus’ into a way of life and here we are today, some 23 years later, about to introduce a new/next phase of it’s existence. ‘Morning View xxiii’ is a re-recording/re-think of the 2001 album and is the result of our desire to honor this burgeoning legacy but also reimagine it as musicians who have been lovingly performing these songs night after night for the last 23 years. See you on the road soon!”

ABOUT INCUBUS

As a sonic and spiritual enigma, Incubus continue to stretch, shape, and shake the foundation of alternative music, embracing endless possibilities and eclipsing any and all boundaries in the process. The multiplatinum Los Angeles band—Brandon Boyd [vocals], Mike Einziger [guitar, piano, backing vocals], José Pasillas II [drums], Chris Kilmore [turntables, keyboards], and Nicole Row [bass]—tune into the creative exchange between them and beam it back to audiences as loudly (and lovingly) as possible. To date, the quintet have notably sold over 23 million albums, scored dozens of multi-platinum and platinum certifications around the globe, gathered billions of streams, and notched six consecutive Top 5 debuts on the Billboard 200. At the same time, they have graced the bills of festivals such as BottleRock, Ohana, Lollapalooza, and Rock In Rio in addition to headlining arenas and amphitheaters worldwide. During 2021, the musicians celebrated the 20th anniversary of their seminal double-platinum third full-length offering, Morning View, with a worldwide livestream. Incubus returned to the house where they famously recorded the album and performed the entire tracklisting from front-to-back for the first time. It incited a rapturous fan response, and the band decided to do it again in October 2023. The group sold out the legendary Hollywood Bowl and performed Morning View in front of a hometown audience, unassumingly kickstarting another era. Between launching a massive US Morning View arena tour in 2024, they ignite the next phase of Incubus with Morning View XXIII and more new music on the horizon. So, are you in?

Incubus Revisit Their Past With ‘Morning View XXIII’ — and the Future Looks Bright

By Angie Martoccio

Angie Martoccio

When Brandon Boyd thinks back on the spring of 2001, he’s amazed he wasn’t more stressed out. His band, Incubus , had just broken through with 1999’s Make Yourself , and their hit “Drive” was climbing the charts. “In retrospect, we probably should have felt more pressure to make a great follow-up record because we have this hit single right now,” Boyd, 47, tells Rolling Stone . “That didn’t even enter our minds. We were just like, ‘This is crazy! A lot of people are listening to our songs right now. Let’s make another one!’ So we decided to rent this house and get out of a traditional studio setting.”

The result was Morning View , released on Oct. 23, 2001. Named after the street of the Malibu home where they recorded it, it’s perhaps one of the most delightfully chill rock albums of the early 2000s, featuring beloved gems like “Wish You Were Here,” “Are You In?” and “Just a Phase.” The album went double-platinum, landing at Number Two on the Billboard 200.

In addition to the tour, Incubus will release Morning View XXIII , a re-recording of the album out May 24. Boyd talked to us about the album, the upcoming tour, their new bassist, Nicole Row, and bringing Lizzo onstage at the Hollywood Bowl.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Sometimes re-recording an album means relearning old songs that haven’t been touched in a long time. But you guys have been actively playing these songs live for years — except for maybe, like, “Blood on the Ground.” Honestly, it was both amazingly enjoyable and surprisingly challenging. It is one thing to perform a song live amongst 20 other songs in a set or perform a handful of songs from a record. Say you hit a bad note here and there, you have a dozen more chances throughout the night to get it right. Our philosophy in playing live [is that] we’re not trying to be perfect, we’re trying to capture an energy.

Lizzo Clarifies She's Not Quitting Music, Just 'Negative Energy'

Lizzo says she's tired of 'being dragged' by everyone: 'i quit', lizzo claims 'nobody asked' her to be in jennifer lopez's film.

I’m sure it was easier to re-record “Mexico” now than, like, “Are You In?” Yeah. 20-plus years of touring definitely has a tendency to chip away at the instrument. When it’s working well, I’ve noticed that my instrument is wider and more broad than it was when I was younger. I also had a procedure done in December 2019 where I had my septum repaired.

Let me start over: I broke my nose twice. Once on stage at the Whisky a Go Go when I was 17. Our former bass player, Alex [Katunich], his bass sort of collided with my face. I didn’t do anything, I just let it heal randomly. And before that, when I was in seventh grade, I caught an egg in the face on Halloween. I basically learned to sing on one nostril, and I’ve been breathing through one nostril for most of my life. But it started to get progressively worse as I’m aging. And I went to see an ear, nose, and throat doctor, and he looked in there and goes, “Your face is fucked up. Will you please let me fix your septum?” And I only bring that up because I’ve noticed that since it healed, I have my range from my twenties and thirties back again.

I’m glad you can breathe through both nostrils now. Lovely. I recommend it.

That being said, we did our very best to honor the songs in as many ways possible, but we did embellish here and there, and the embellishments that we made were things that have evolved out of live performances of the songs. So the versions that are on Morning View XXIII are very true to the originals, but it’s almost as if we did real recordings of the versions that we’ve been playing live of them.

Taylor Swift has really popularized re-recording so she can own her music. How much of that was a factor in this decision? It was definitely part of the discussion. Through time, we won our re-record rights back, and it’s not unimportant to the process. To me, it’s sort of a less interesting part of the process, but still a part of it. When you’re involved in the making of music, especially when it’s exotic recording contracts from the Nineties, you pour your soul out and give everything you have into these recordings, and then ultimately you don’t own them. And there’s something not unusual about that, but it’s also sad.

So we’ve been around long enough now. We got to that point after all the decades where we’ve started to get our re-record rights back. We’ll never own the masters to the original recordings, but in the contracts it basically says that should we choose to re-record the album, we then own those master recordings. So it just gives a little bit more license and ownership to these tracks. But like I said, it’s not the most important thing.

When you feel like the wind is at your back, it’s a feeling that is palpable. I’m speaking now as a person who’s in his late forties, and once you have a taste of that, it’s a lovely, lovely thing. And we’re taking this kind of psychic momentum into our songwriting process now, where we’re writing a new record. We go into the studio and there’s a new song idea every single day. It’s a fun, infectious feeling.

Were there any challenges that you faced during the re-recording? Did you look at any of the songs and say, “This hasn’t aged well?” [ Laughs. ] I have to say that there definitely weren’t problems in that regard. Beyond that, the challenges were kind of beautiful. We were working with Nicole Row, who’s playing bass with us now.

I was going to say, Morning View was the last Incubus album with Alex. How did Nicole approach his parts? It was so much fun watching her perform them, honor the original recordings, but also put her own stamp on them. She’s an incredible musician. She’s just effortless on a guitar. Watching her take on this challenge was really wonderful. I think people are really going to like her on this album, but also witnessing her become part of this band family.

I know Nicole took over Ben Kenney’s parts on tour after he got sick . But is she an official member of the band? Yeah, she’s definitely part of the band now. Her very first project with us was obviously going on tour, and she swooped in and was this delightful breath of fresh air, which we’re so thankful for so many reasons. It’s always sad when somebody from a creative family decides to step away, but she brought a whole new universe into our band, which has been amazing. Part of that momentum we’re feeling in writing a new record is partly her fault.

The original video for “Wish You Were Here” featured the band running from screaming fans and jumping off a bridge à la the Monkees in Head. MTV banned it because of the September 11th attacks, but hardcore fans were able to see it on the Morning View Sessions DVD. Will you release it alongside the re-recording? It didn’t occur to me, but I think that’s a fantastic idea. The only problem is we probably don’t own the rights to it. It’s owned by Sony. It’s so funny that it got banned. It’s just so stupid. It’s like, what’s wrong with this? It was just us jumping off the bridge. I think it came out overseas, so it’s out there, but it’s hard to find. Which is sort of fun, especially in the age of the internet.

We spent all our money on it. But I remember when we got the message from our record label that MTV wasn’t going to play it because of September 11th and they perceived it as being insensitive. We were gutted. Then they were like, “You have about 24 hours to call it something else.” I think it was either 24 or 36 hours, but for the sake of drama, let’s call it 24.

We fortunately had done a day of performance footage, which is all that slo-mo footage of us in that white room with the fans and blowing our hair and all that shit. Then I had a camcorder on me all the time at the Morning View house, so we had all this footage. I was like, “I’m going to make a home movie music video mixed with this performance footage.” And I actually edited the video. Forget that I had never edited a video before. It didn’t matter. So we turned a potential disaster into something usable.

With the early-2000s rock revival, Incubus has gained a lot of younger fans. Is that something you’ve noticed? I don’t think about it very often, but it does occur to me that there are new generations of people discovering our music. From what I am able to observe at our shows, looking out at the audience, it’s a confusing swath of humanity. It’s not one particular age group or demographic. It feels like it’s a little bit of everybody. I love that people of all sorts, ages, skin colors, creeds, planets, whatever, come to our concerts. I think it’s so cool. But I have been noticing younger people over the past two years in particular since we started touring again after Covid, and I am getting the sense that it’s parents who grew up coming to our shows. Now they’re bringing their kids.

I remember I got really into Led Zeppelin when I was between 13 and 15, and that would’ve been in the late Eighties, early Nineties. Those records had only come out 10 or 15 years before that, but it seemed so old and vintage and rad to me in this way I can’t really describe. So these people coming to the shows with their kids, our albums are older than those Zeppelin records were [when I was] growing up. That throws things into perspective, in a really wild way.
