Rickie fowler survives three-way playoff for dramatic win at 2023 rocket mortgage classic, share this article.
Rickie Fowler buried a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to win a battle with Adam Hadwin and Collin Morikawa in Detroit and end a four-year victory drought at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
“I knew it was just a matter of time with the way I was playing,” said Fowler, who notched his sixth career PGA Tour title.
It had been 1,610 days, or 4 years, 4 months, 29 days since his last win at the 2019 WM Phoenix Open, the longest victory drought of his Tour career.
Ten months ago, he was ranked No. 185 in the Official World Golf Ranking and barely qualified for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Late last year, Fowler returned to working with his former instructor Butch Harmon and his game has made steady progress. He entered this week having finished in the top 20 in 12 of his 15 starts this year.
“It’s tough when you’re struggling for that long of a period of time,” said Fowler, noting that his play was building to this victory. “How I’ve played is some of the best if not the best I’ve felt about my game and on the course really ever.”

After inclement weather in the forecast moved up final-round tee times at Detroit Golf Club and forced the use of preferred lies, the field dealt with intermittent showers and muggy conditions. Three players looking to end winless droughts emerged in a battle down the stretch, setting up for a thrilling finish.
Fowler, who held the 54-hole lead at the U.S. Open two weeks ago, shot 64 on Saturday to claim a one-stroke lead. But he was 2-for-10 in converting 54- hole leads and almost let this one slip away too. He made birdie on three of his first seven holes, including a 46-footer at No. 2, to stretch his lead to two but failed to capitalize on the par 5s and lost the lead late on the back nine. When it mattered most, the 34-year-old out of Oklahoma State stiffed his approach at 18 to 3 feet.
“Our back was against the wall,” said Fowler of his dramatic 72nd-hole wedge from 147 yards. He cashed in the putt for 68.
Returning to 18 for the first playoff hole, Fowler flared his drive right into trouble but he got relief from casual water and had a clean look at the green and knocked his approach to 11 feet, which turned out to be closest of the three playoff contestants.
Morikawa, who hadn’t won in two seasons and nearly two years – an eternity for the 26-year-old two-time major winner – shot a bogey-free 8-under 64.
“Playoffs suck when you’re on the wrong side of them,” Morikawa said. “You put everything you want into it and comes down to one hole, but that’s what golf is. You’ve got to perform, you’ve got to execute the shots.”
He erased a four-stroke deficit by making six birdies in his first 12 holes, and chipped close at the par-5 17 th to become the first player to reach 24 under and grab the lead for the first time in the tournament. His birdie putt at 18 to tie the course record lipped out of the left side of the cup. His approach in the playoff airmailed the green and his birdie chip from just off the green came up short.
“I truly thought I hit the perfect shot and I just was a little juiced, went a little far,” Morikawa said of his second shot at the playoff hole.
Hadwin, 35, was seeking his first win since the 2017 Valspar Championship, a drought even longer than Fowler, something that wasn’t lost on Hadwin or his caddie Joe Cruz.
“I looked at Joe on I think 15 and said, ‘Why don’t we do this more often? This is fun,’ ” Hadwin recounted.
Hadwin, who shot a final-round 67, made it a three-way tie for the lead at 23 under with a birdie at 15 and tied Morikawa with a birdie at 17. His approach to 18 rolled off the green, but he got up and down to shoot 67 and join Morikawa at 24-under 264. Hadwin’s 22-foot birdie effort at the first playoff hole burned the left edge.
“That putt on the playoff there looked really good, just a little bit hard,” he said.
Fowler’s winning putt benefited from a free read from Hadwin, and he rolled it in and soaked in the moment.
“I was kind of just still and quiet and everyone was going crazy around me,” he said. “It was a nice moment just to kind of feel like the weight on my shoulders was finally off.”

Detroit Golf Club , opened in 1899, has two 18-hole courses , the North and South, both designed by the legendary Donald Ross. The setup — mostly using the North — is rerouted for the Tour for a par-72 of 7,370 yards, and is the flattest course on Tour. The tree-lined, up-and-back routing is old-school, and only one hole has a water hazard, the par-5 14th. Driving accuracy and exquisite putting on the undulating greens are key to victory.

2024 PGA Championship odds, predictions, picks: Tiger Woods projection from golf model that called the Masters
F our-time PGA Championship winner Tiger Woods will turn his attention to the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club, which gets underway on Thursday, May 16. Woods is expected to compete against a loaded 2024 PGA Championship field that includes Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka. Woods is a massive 125-1 longshot in the latest 2024 PGA Championship odds, while Scheffler is the 3-1 favorite on the PGA odds board. Koepka, the defending champion, is 12-1 to repeat.
Should your PGA Championship 2024 picks include backing one of the favorites, or should you target a longshot like Woods, Dustin Johnson (40-1) or Jason Day (50-1)? Before locking in your 2024 PGA Championship picks or Tiger Woods props, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .
Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.
McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.
The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.
In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
Now with the PGA Championship 2024 field taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.
Top 2024 PGA Championship predictions
One major surprise: Collin Morikawa, a 22-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Morikawa has had plenty of success at major championships early in his career. He's a two-time major champion and is coming off a third-place finish at the Masters in April.
After missing the cut in two of his first five starts on the PGA Tour in 2024, Morikawa seems to be rounding into form ahead of the second major of the year. He's finished inside the top-10 in his last two starts thanks in large part to his putting stroke. The 27-year-old entered the month of May ranked 12th in one-putt percentage (44.27%), 12th in putts per round (28.00) and 18th in putting average (1.717). Given his current odds and past performances at majors, the model projects strong value in including Morikawa in your 2024 PGA Championship bets.
The model has also examined where Tiger Woods finishes. Woods' 15 major championship wins only trail Nicklaus (18) and his 82 PGA Tour wins are tied for the most of all-time with Sam Snead. However, Woods hasn't won since the 2019 Zozo Championship and it's clear that injuries have taken their toll on golf's biggest star.
Woods is now 48 years old and has had several neck and back surgeries over the years. He also suffered a serious car accident that left him with a spiral fracture in his right leg. He's either withdrawn or missed the cut in four of his last six starts on the PGA Tour, but he showed grit and determination at the Masters in April. He made the cut at the 2024 Masters, breaking the all-time record with 24 consecutive cuts at Augusta National. The model just locked in its Tiger Woods PGA Championship picks here. .
How to make 2024 PGA Championship picks
The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds longer than 20-1 to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .
Who will win the 2024 PGA Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the PGA Championship 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected PGA Championship leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters .

Rookie Jake Knapp among tight chasing pack at THE CJ CUP, seeking second TOUR victory
Daily Wrap Up

McKINNEY, Texas — Taylor Pendrith has been here before — holding or sharing a lead after three rounds on the PGA TOUR.
The Canadian was one of six among the top 10 on the leaderboard seeking a first TOUR victory at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson.
Pendrith chipped in twice for consecutive eagles to kick-start an 8-under 63 on Saturday for a one-shot lead over 36-hole leader Jake Knapp.
Taylor Pendrith’s back-to-back chip-in eagles combine for the Shot of the Day
“I have no idea,” Pendrith said when asked if he'd ever had back-to-back eagles, which came on the par-5 fifth and par-4 sixth holes as he finished at 19-under 194. “I don't think so. Maybe a first.”
It was the third time on the PGA TOUR this season, and vaulted him ahead of Knapp. Pendrith's lead was two before Knapp birdied the par-5 18th for a 67.
Ben Kohles (65) and first-round leader Matt Wallace (67) were two shots off the lead, one stroke ahead of Alex Noren and Kelly Kraft, playing near his Dallas home at the TPC Craig Ranch in the suburb of McKinney.
Troy Merritt, the only two-time PGA TOUR winner among the top 10, shot 70 and was at 14-under with three others, including one-time winner Kevin Tway. The son of 1986 PGA Championship winner Bob Tway shot 64, while Vince Whaley and Byeong Hun An each shot 66.
Wallace and Knapp, a rookie who won the Mexico Open at Vidanta in February, are the others with PGA TOUR victories.
Jake Knapp’s Round 3 highlights from THE CJ CUP
Pendrith settled for second from the top of the third-round leaderboard at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2022. He was in the same position at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship earlier that season before a 76 left him in a tie for fifth.
“I think just stay patient and play my own game and don’t get ahead of myself,” Pendrith said. “Make as many birdies as you can, because I think it’ll take a low one tomorrow.”
Pendrith was working on a low one after a 26-foot chip shot rolled around the hole and went in, then a 41-yarder bounced about 25 feet from the hole and rolled in with almost perfect speed.
The 32-year-old who has won twice on PGA TOUR Canada is 7-under on those two holes. They were the first two of five consecutive birdies in the second round.
“Obviously, a bonus for both of those to go in,” Pendrith said. “Two really good shots. First one had a little bit of steam so maybe got a little lucky to drop.”
Knapp was coming off consecutive 64s and had his second bogey-free round with a pair of birdies on each nine.
“I think I do best when I kind of do leaderboard watch and I see what other guys are doing,” Knapp said. “You see what guys are doing in the morning and you get an idea of maybe how the course is playing.”
Wallace — a 34-year-old Englishman with 10 international victories, including four on the DP World Tour — answered his second bogey of the week on 16 with birdies on the final two holes.
“I don’t know many people around me have won more tournaments around the world than myself,” said Wallace, whose TOUR victory was in the Dominican Republic last year at the Corales Puntacana Championship. “Not that that’s a big brag, but I feel like I know how to get the job done.”
Kohles, who was born in Dallas but moved when he was 10, had a 263-yard second shot to 12 feet and made the eagle putt on the par-5 ninth for a 5-under 31 on the front. He bogeyed the par-4 11th before the last two of his five birdies.
The 34-year-old shot 73 playing in the final group in Puerto Rico in March, finishing fifth. Kohles has three career top-10 finishes.
Ben Kohles’ Round 3 highlights from THE CJ CUP
Kris Kim, a 16-year-old amateur making his PGA TOUR debut, nearly had a hole-in-one on the 225-yard fourth hole, the ball rolling within inches of the cup. The son of South Korean-born former LPGA golfer Ji-Hyun Suh shot 70 and was 8-under.
Kim, who is from England and playing on a sponsor exemption from the South Korean company and tournament title sponsor CJ Group, was set to become the youngest to play the final round of a PGA TOUR event since Guan Tianlang at the 2014 CIMB Classic. Tianlang was 16 years, eight days old.
At 16 years, seven months, Kim surpassed Jordan Spieth as the youngest player to make the cut at THE CJ CUP . Spieth was two months shy of his 17th birthday when he made his first PGA TOUR start at his hometown event in 2010, and tied for 16th. Kim was tied for 51st.

Troy Merritt, the only two-time PGA Tour winner among the top 10, shot 70 and was at 14 under with three others, including one-time winner Kevin Tway. The son of 1986 PGA Championship winner Bob Tway shot 64, while Vince Whaley and Byeong Hun An each shot 66.
Wallace and Knapp, a rookie won won the Mexico Open in February, are the others with PGA Tour victories.
The 32-year-old who has won twice on the Canadian tour is 7 under on those two holes.
The 29-year-old Californian who was working as a security guard back home three years ago had to hang on during a rough final round for the win in Mexico. Now he’ll be chasing while still playing in the final group.
“I think I do best when I kind of do leaderboard watch and I see what other guys are doing,” Knapp said. “You see what guys are doing in the morning and you get an idea of maybe how the course is playing.”
Wallace — a 34-year-old Englishman with 10 international victories, including four on the European tour — answered his second bogey of the week on 16 with birdies on the final two holes.
“I don’t know many people around me have won more tournaments around the world than myself,” said Wallace, whose tour victory was in the Dominican Republic last year.
Kris Kim, a 16-year-old amateur making his PGA Tour debut, nearly had a hole-in-one on the 225-yard fourth hole, the ball rolling within inches of the cup. The son of South Korean-born former LPGA golfer Ji-Hyun Suh shot 70 and was 8 under.
At 16 years, seven months, Kim surpassed Jordan Spieth as the youngest player to make the cut at the Nelson. Spieth was two months shy of his 17th birthday when made his first PGA Tour start at his hometown event in 2010, and tied for 16th. Kim was tied for 51st.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) Chris Gotterup shot a 6-under 65 on Saturday to push his lead to four strokes with a round left in the PGA Tour’s inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic.
After opening 66-64 to take a one-stroke lead into the day, Gotterup had seven birdies and a bogey on a sunny afternoon with the breeze only gusting to 12 mph at Dunes Golf & Beach Club. He capped the round with a 17-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th.
“That birdie on the last was huge,” Gotterup said. “I was kind of in not a great spot over there on the right, but hit a great shot and finished it off with a really nice putt.”
The 24-year-old former University of Oklahoma player is trying to break through with his first PGA Tour victory in his 27th start. He had an 18-under 195 total, with the four-stroke lead matching the largest on the tour this season.
“I practiced all those days at home for a day like tomorrow,” Gotterup said. “It’s going to be hard. There’s a lot of good guys behind me. I’m going to have to bring it. But if I was here at the beginning of the week and you said this was going to happen, I’d be all in. I’m excited. It’s what I play the game for.”
Erik van Rooyen (65), Jorge Campillo (67) and Robert MacIntyre (68) were tied for second in the tournament being held opposite the Wells Fargo Championship. a signature event in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Myrtle Beach winner will get a spot in the PGA Championship next week, but not in the Masters or a guaranteed spot in the remaining two $20 million signature events.
Van Rooyen is a two-time winner on the PGA Tour. He’s the only player in the top six with a victory.
Blades Brown, the second 16-year-old in two weeks to make a cut, was tied for 22nd at 8 under after a bogey-free 66. Last week, Kris Kim advanced to the weekend in the Byron Nelson.
“I felt so relaxed on that first tee shot today, not having to grind,” Brown said. “I didn’t really have any expectations of myself today, and I was able to go out and play free and focused golf.”
Brown, from Nashville, Tennessee, is high school sophomore. His mother, Rhonda Blades Brown, played two seasons in the WNBA.
