NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Inside the bougie cruise ship where guests are served 24-hour champagne and caviar
Share this with
If you’ve been addicted to TikTok’s nine month cruise , and scrolled through pictures of the world’s largest cruise ship , you’re going to want to know about this oh-so- bougie offering, where guests are treated to the ultimate spa experience at sea.
First launched on the luxury liner, Silver Dawn, by Silversea Cruises, the ‘spa concept’ is said to be inspired by the lavish lifestyle of the Roman elite .
And while you’re not about to enter into a world of gladiators, feasts and orgies, it is all rather indulgent.
In fact, the concept was originally inspired by the pandemic: a chance for instant, decadent gratification, after literal years of being locked away inside.
So perhaps it’s no surprise it’s been nominated for an award in wellness (alongside Explora Journeys, Viking, Emerald Cruises, Amawaterways, Virgin Voyages and Swan Hellenic in the coveted wellness category) in the Sailawaze Excellence Awards in May .
The Otium Spa (Latin for ‘free time’), offers 100 minute-long signature treatments. Yep, 100 whole minutes where you’re kneaded and prodded into the land of ultimate relaxation.
Their treatment menu includes The Otium, a massage involving a mix of oils infused with shea butter, raspberry and chamomile. The Appollonian Spirit will ease tired muscles, and the Divine Experience includes a scalp, neck, shoulder and hand massage.
You’ll need deep pockets though, as each of these treatments cost a whopping $399. You can also get a little tweakment on board too, with wrinkle and dermal filler treatments meaning you could return to land looking 10 years younger.
And, as you hop from thermal spa to steam room to aromatherapy bath, you can enjoy champagne and caviar, 24 hours a day. It’d be rude not to.
There’s also cocktails, macarons, and chocolates on offer, and you’ll find fresh fruit and infused waters if you want to err on the side of healthy. The soothing music played throughout is also inspired by ancient Rome.
Want to win a cruising holiday for 2?
Do you love cruising? Are you an intrepid traveller? Maybe you just like looking at pictures of luxe ships. No matter which, we want you to vote!
Metro has partnered with the Sailawaze Excellence Awards , highlighting the very best in cruising when it comes to sustainability, wellness, entertainment and beyond.
And we need YOU to simply select what you’ve been most impressed by.
The best bit? By voting you’ll automatically be in with a chance of winning a cruise for two worth £2,500.
Say bon voyage to the more traditional categories of 'best large ship' or 'best luxury cruise line' and instead ahoy to innovation, food and drink and showstopping performances.
Vote for your favourite here .

But don’t think the Roman-esque vibes stop once you leave the spa.
Back in your cabin, there’s the Otium balcony experience. On chilly days, guests can order cashmere blankets and hot chocolate from their personal butler to be enjoyed on their veranda.
There’s also the ‘food and chill’ experience, where your brings comfort food to your door. But this isn’t Doritos, dip and a dairy milk. The comfort food menu includes foie gras burgers and lobster on brioche.
And, when it’s time for bed, you can choose a pillow from a vast menu, curl up on 400 thread-count Egyptian cotton linens, and if you want to go all out, you can ask your butler to fill them room with their signature ‘sleeping scent’. We’re feeling dozy already.
The Otium spa is available on three Silversea ships: Silver Dawn and Silver Nova. And of course, a luxury experience comes with a price tag.
The cheapest available voyage on the Silver Nova goes from Seward (Alaska) to Canada, for seven days and costs £2,950 per person (excluding off shore experiences).
On Silver Nova, the cheapest cruise goes from Stockholm to Copenhagen (or you can do the same trip in reverse) for £5,750 per person for seven days, taking in sites in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland along the way.
If you were wondering who else was nominated in the wellness category of the Sailawaze Excellence Awards (of which Metro is a partner of), we’ve got you.
Swan Hellenic has partnered with physician and author Deepak Chopra to create ‘Explore & Restore’ wellbeing voyages. Here you’ll find Chopra-certified meditation and yoga teachers offer daily private and group sessions with itineraries including Ayurvedic culinary offerings, daily meditation, yoga and breath-work classes.
Viking has its Nordic Spa, which features a Snow Grotto filled with manmade snow – based on the Scandinavian bathing ritual (involving alternating hot and cold therapies). The spa also includes an experience shower, an ice bucket beauty salon and more.
Virgin Voyages has its Athletic Club – designed like a retro athletic social club – which features a boxing ring, an outdoor active training camp, a basketball court and a cold-pressed juice bar. By night, the catamaran net provides a perfect spot for stargazing.
AmaWaterways Wellness nomination is the AmaMagna: the first river cruise ship to offer a full-sized pickleball court. Onboard classes offer workout classes such as ’champagne yoga’ on selected sailings with the Mekong cruises offering unique wellness activities like tea ceremonies, tai chi, yoga, and guided meditation.
Emerald Cruises has fitness activities including guided hikes and bike rides, plus canoeing and kayaking excursions, with dedicated on board spas and professionally trained treatment therapists. A wellness coach is on hand to provide fitness advice and group lessons, including open-air yoga and water aerobics and a state-of-the-art infrared sauna on Emerald Azzurra and Emerald Sakara is also your wellness mate. The cruises promote space, relaxation, and a more personalised service, with the crew addressing guests by their first names and remembering their favourite drinks.
Finally, Explora Journeys has in-suite apps for guided meditation, morning stretches, sleep-boosting soundtracks and exercise videos, as well as open-air workout facilities and a fitness centre and studio equipped with Pilates Reformers and Technogym equipment. That comes with expert-led retreat programmes for immune boosting and sleep and a spa that features a Finnish sauna, Himalayan salt cave and multi-sensory experience showers.

Crew member missing at sea during round-the-world cruise
The ship - which can carry 1,400 guests at a time - turned back to join the search for the missing crew member. It had been due to return back to the UK on Sunday morning.
By Rachel McGrath, news reporter
Friday 3 May 2024 22:07, UK
A crew member on a 120-day voyage around the world is missing at sea.
Ambassador Cruise Line's Ambience ship was making its final journey from Lisbon, Portugal back to the UK when the crew member was reported missing.
In a statement to Sky News, the British cruise line said Ambience had initially turned back to "retrace her route to the ship's position when the crew member was last seen".
However, it has since been "released by coastguard authorities from the search" and is "continuing on her original course back to the UK".
According to the statement, the crew member, who was from India, was reported missing "shortly after breakfast" this morning while the ship was off Cape Finisterre, on the west coast of Spain .
It said thorough ship-wide searches were conducted for the person, who has not been named, and the local coastguard was informed.
Ambience had departed from Tilbury, Essex on 6 January and is due to return to the port on Sunday.

"Guests onboard have been kept informed throughout the day and have been advised of recent developments.
"Ambassador remains committed to the safety and wellbeing of all our crew and guests. We are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of our colleague at this difficult time."

Princess Cruises Announces Revised 2025 World Cruise Itineraries

By downloading this image you agree to the Princess asset use terms and conditions
SANTA CLARITA, Calif., (April 30, 2024) – Given the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and surrounding area and following extensive consultation with global security experts and government authorities, Princess Cruises is revising the itineraries for its two 2025 World Cruises, which will no longer visit the Middle East or Asia, and now instead, will offer new port stops in Africa and Europe.
“A Princess World Cruise is truly the voyage of a lifetime and after careful consideration with guidance from global security experts and government authorities, we know our guests will understand and appreciate the change to our upcoming 2025 itineraries to avoid certain areas,” said Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer of Princess Cruises. “These global events beyond our control have necessitated these reroutings but we are pleased to continue to ensure these world cruises retain destination-rich itineraries with incredible stops along the west Africa coast and the Mediterranean.”
Island Princess World Cruise
Sailing from North America on Island Princess, the 116-day World Cruise offers two roundtrip options with departures from both Ft. Lauderdale, embarking January 5, 2025, and Los Angeles on January 20, 2025, and ends in Los Angeles on May 17, 2025. This destination dreamers delight will traverse over 36,700 nautical miles, visiting 46 destinations in 24 countries and six continents. The voyage includes visits to historic Bar, Montenegro and Taranto, Italy, along with inaugural World Cruise calls to the idyllic Greek Island of Patmos and to Volos – for the Monasteries of Meteora.
The revised World Cruise itinerary, from February 16-April 9, departs Sydney and will travel to Melbourne and Perth, then on to South Africa. From there, the cruise resumes the scheduled itinerary starting in Valletta, Malta on April 9.
Following is the amended portion of the voyage:
Those guests scheduled to originally depart or join the cruise from Dubai on March 14, 2025, will now embark or disembark four days earlier on March 9, in Cape Town, South Africa. Couple who have been on 30 cruise ships left stranded after breaking golden rule
Cruise ships have specific rules you should be following to avoid your holiday being ruined.
Tom Earnshaw
A couple who have journeyed on 30 cruise ship holidays have found themselves stranded after breaking a golden rule.
Cruise ship holidays are truly like no other you can go on , full of immersive experiences on a massive floating hotel that often comes with on board streets full of shops as well as cinema screens and even ice skating arenas.
They're an engineering marvel and are rightly celebrated.
But as with any particular holiday, they come with their own very specific rules that you might only truly understand by experiencing or listening to the experts on .
And for this particular story, it shows that experience is no guarantee of anything and stresses the importance of following departure times more than ever.
Sadly for Richard and Claudene Gordon, the experience of the 30 cruises they had previously been on ended up counting for nothing.
That's because the American couple, from Salt Lake City in Utah , were left stranded on a Mediterranean cruise around southern Europe.
It follows on from eight passengers being left stranded on an African island following an 'unfortunate' error.
Travelling on the Norwegian Viva cruise ship with their family and close friends, Richard was just days away from celebrating his 85th birthday on-board.
But he and wife Claudene were left in the Spanish town of Motril on Monday (29 April) after a rain storm saw their bus back to port delayed by an hour.
Speaking to CNN Travel, Gordon said: "I am a very experienced traveler and have probably been on as many as 30 cruises during my lifetime.
"Never before have we ever missed catching a ship on time at a port. So we are not someone who abuses the system.
"Our cruise began in Lisbon and we departed from Lisbon about one and a half hours after the scheduled departure at 4pm. Then the next night or two, at least a half-hour late from the dock, so it is clear that they do not always leave on the exact moment scheduled.”
One British cruise ship worker, Lucy Southerton, posted on her YouTube channel about the importance of following departure times.
She said: "When you're on a cruise it is very different to a hotel in that the hotel is going to stay stationary. It's not going to go any where.
"The cruise ship will so you absolutely have to make it a priority to get back to the ship on time. Ask crew members about what the traffic is like in this port if you are thinking about you know getting a taxi to a certain destination because missing the ship could really put a damper on your vacation."
Richard and Claudene stayed in a B&B for the night before getting up at 3am to find flights to nearby Palma Airport on the Spanish island of Majorca, where Norwegian Viva was docking on Wednesday.
Thankfully for the couple, Norwegian Cruise Line offered a taxi from the airport to the ship to get them back on board.
After arriving back with their family on the ship, they said: "We really received the royal treatment today. They picked us up at the hotel in a beautiful black BMW limousine to take us to the ship.
"There we were met by the head of ship services who escorted us inside the ship to meet the general manager of the ship, then they escorted us to breakfast, then they escorted us to our cabin.
“We simply told them that we were abandoned at the dock with no one to meet us or tell us where to go, and they said they have already complained about the harbour master who was supposed to take care of things for them.
"But of course the ship had not contacted us directly for two days so that doesn’t speak so well for them."
Norwegian Cruise Line said it 'worked closely with the local port agents to make arrangements for the guests to rejoin the vessel'.
