Day 1 – Langkawi from above

‘Lang kawi’ means ‘eagle red’, as the island of Langkawi is famous for the many red-brown eagles living here. It’s hard not to spot them during your time on the island. What better way to start your time in Langkawi than by seeing it from a birds-eye view? 

1. Langkawi Sky Bridge

The Langkawi Sky Bridge is a truly astonishing experience. Experience the world’s steepest cable car, taking you up to 660 meters above sea level, where the bridge is located. 

Walk across the beautifully constructed bridge, suspended between two peaks, and see panoramic views across the jungle and ocean. One of the special features is the shape of the bridge, providing a change of scenery from every viewpoint. If there is one thing you should do in Langkawi, it should be to visit this place!

The internationally famed Langkawi Sky Bridge attracts travelers from all over the world. It is highly recommended to visit the bridge when it opens at 9 AM. Note: Strong wind speeds sometimes force the sky bridge to close down for a few hours.

2. Seven Wells Waterfall (Telaga Tujuh)

Near to the top of the Sky Bridge is the Seven Wells Waterfall. The most impressive waterfall on the island gets its name from the seven pools the fall creates at different levels.

There are a few different routes you can take to reach the falls, depending on whether you prefer a shorter or longer hike, but if you can’t make it to the falls, you can also see it from the cable car on your way up to the sky bridge.

3. Relax at Pantai Cenang

After a busy day, chill and see the sunset at one of the island’s most beautiful beaches. Pantai Cenang is well located on the west side of the island, where most cafes/restaurants/music bars are located. The long stretch of white sand spans for 2km and is the most popular beach on the island, which makes for a lively, fun atmosphere.

4. Night market (different part of the island every day) 

When the night has fallen, the night markets open their doors. Langkawi has a different market every evening, at a different location, of a different specialty. It’s a great way to try some traditional Malaysian foods and get the vibe of the locals, as they cook and sell. The markets use a lot of plastic, so bring your own reusable bags and containers to help reduce single-use plastic (click for more tips). These are the market locations per evening:

Day 2 – Discover Langkawi by motorbike

Langkawi is a fairly big island that has lots to explore. Rent a motorbike to easily get to most parts of the island within 30/40 minutes.

5. Tanjung Rhu beach

After breakfast, make your way to the northern tip of Langkawi. Tanjung Rhu is a remote beach sandwiched between the lush jungle and the Andaman Sea. This area is much quieter than other parts of Langkawi and hosts only a few exclusive resorts. A little piece of heaven!

6. Cruising Langkawi

From north to south, east to west, you will find a variety of beaches and landscapes on Langkawi. Cruise with your motorbike around the island, along the rice paddies and white-sand beaches. 

Langkawi is a safe island to drive around on your own and all main roads are very well maintained for traffic.

7. Langkawi Mangrove tour

Langkawi’s northeast coastline is covered with dense mangrove forest and is incredibly important for the island’s ecosystem. The Mangrove is a UNESCO Global Geopark, in other words: a protected area that can only be visited by taking a boat tour. A mangrove tour is a great way to learn about plants and wildlife and how they all work together in the ecosystem.

• Mangrove forests act as a barrier for waves. 
• There are almost no mosquitoes on the island because of the bats that eat insects. 

Day 3 – Adventure & Chill

Get your adrenaline pumping by zipping across the 12 zip lines in the Langkawi jungle. The longest zipline of Langkawi is located at the foot of the Seven Wells Waterfall. It gives a spectacular view of both the waterfall and jungle.

9. Sunset boat tour

One of the most popular things to do in Langkawi is to take one of the many boat tours that are on offer around the island. A range of cruises is available, such as island-hop on and off cruises, luxury sunset cruises, and mangrove tours.

A hop-on and off cruise allows you to see some of the biodiverse waters and islands surrounding Langkawi, freshwater lakes, and islands famed for their corals and rich marine life.

Be aware that the corals are protected at the moment in Langkawi due to excessive coral bleaching, so make sure to only swim where instructed and never touch the corals. 

Opt for a private tour if you want to be flexible in your itinerary and avoid the crowds of travelers that may also be visiting these places on the standard island hopping tours.

Things not to do on Langkawi

There are, sadly, a few popular activities on Langkawi that aren’t ethical. The first is to visit a crocodile farm. It may seem a credible place for the animals to live, but the crocodiles are used in stunt shows for the entertainment of travelers.

The second activity is to feed the eagles (normally a part of the island hopping tour). Travelers are encouraged to feed the eagles chicken skin, which is not a part of their natural diet, resulting in an imbalance of the food chain that causes damage to the ecosystem. Never support activities that use animals in this way and trust your instincts as to which activities may be inhumane.

Tip: Book onto a mangrove tour instead, where you can see beautiful birds and other wildlife in their natural environment, without causing them damage through feeding.

Getting to Langkawi

Although Langkawi is an island at the northernmost point of Malaysia, there are good transport connections. There is an airport with regular flights from Kuala Lumpur and other destinations in Malaysia.

A popular method of travel is to first visit Penang before taking the ferry across to Langkawi. The journey is about 2-3 hours, but it is worth checking the weather, as during the monsoon season, the crossing can be rough. Note: Since 2020, the ferry from Penang to Langkawi has stopped running and has yet to resume. For now, the only way to get there is by plane.

Getting around

Once on the island of Langkawi, you can easily make your way around the island via Grab (taxi app) or public taxi. If you’d rather have more flexibility in your journeys, there are plenty of places to hire a motorbike around the island. 

With a car, you can cover the most distance and have greater freedom and flexibility on your trip.

Weather-wise, the best time to visit Langkawi is between January and March, when it is the dry season. However, this will also be the peak tourist season.

November to December and April to August can have a few drops of rain, but there will be fewer tourists.

These priceless memories capture and celebrate the ruling of the fourth prime minister of Langkawi! • Food Recommendation: La Sal is a beautiful spot that offers some of the best and most delicious Malaysian cuisine! If heaven was something you could taste, you will taste it here!

Close off the activity of the day on one of the most well known and beautiful beaches in Langkawi! Enjoy the stunning vistas, sweeping views and upbeat atmosphere that make this 2km stretch of white sand the outstanding Langkawi landmark that is is.

Here you can enjoy sundowners, have a dance and really celebrate your arrival on this fantastic island! Mahsuri Tomb and Museum

If one of your reasons for visiting Malaysia is for the storied history and legends, then this one is a doozy! Mahsuri was a woman who was born in Langkawi, but not just any woman – she was believed to be the most beautiful woman on the entire island. Mahsuri’s parents are said to have been Thai, but they immigrated to Langkawi during the 18th century. However, the origins of Mahsuri’s parents is somewhat folklore, some even believe she was a princess!

It is said that Mahsuri was desired and admired by every man on the island, with even the chief of Langkawi wanting to marry her! Unfortunately for them, Mahsuri fell in love with a warrior whom she married. This warrior then had to go to battle during the battle with the Siamese!

This left Mahsuri alone, but she was comforted by the company of a charming storyteller than had come to Langkawi and enchanted everyone. Because this storyteller had nowhere to stay, Mahsuri opened up her home. Soon, out of jealousy, the chief’s wife started a rumor that she was involved in adultery – and thus she was sentenced to a violent death!

Mushuri was stabbed to death and tied to a wooden pole by the elders of the island! The legend says that when she died, she bled white blood. Today, you can observe this sacred spot with friends and family and be inspired by the colorful tale and bravery of Mushuri!

Underwater World Langkawi

It is a true tropical paradise. From it’s white powdery beaches to its rainforests and delicious food, there are many reasons to enjoy travel in Langkawi. In this guide, I want to ensure you have the best time possible here with the top 24 things to do in Langkawi, Malaysia. This is your full Langkawi guide to everything you need to know.

I wrote this guide based on extensive research and my experience of visiting Langkawi many times. I love this place!

Langkawi is located off the northern part of Malaysia’s west coast in the Andaman Sea. It’s about 30 kilometres from the Malaysian mainland. While it’s often talked about like it’s a single island, it’s actually a district of 99 islands. It may be the most beautiful place in Malaysia.

It is easy to get here thanks to an international airport and frequent ferries from the mainland. The main island is where you’ll find an array of Langkawi attractions as well as many accommodation and eating options.

Top 24 Best Things To Do In Langkawi Island [2024]

Here are the best Langkawi places to visit. Read through and select which activities and Langkawi tourist attractions fit your interests and timeframe.

Many of the best things to do in Langkawi involve entrance fees or tours. The best place to purchase these is on Klook here as they offer discounts on most places.

I have visited here many times both alone and with kids aged from 3 (my middle child had his third birthday here!) to 13.

Walk Along The Langkawi Sky Bridge

The best place in Langkawi to start your sightseeing is to visit the Langkawi SkyBridge. In fact, a walk along the Langkawi SkyBridge is one of the most popular Langkawi tourist attractions.

The Langkawi SkyBridge is the longest free span, curved bridge in the world making it one of the most interesting places in Langkawi to visit. This is a brilliantly engineered bridge, being held suspended almost 2000 feet above sea level, all by a singular pylon.

There is stunning scenery at this breathtaking location as the curved bridge spans between two great mountains. It’s a great way to explore the natural attractions in Malaysia.

To reach the SkyBridge, you need to take the Langkawi SkyCab – the world’s steepest cable car – with the top station at 708 metres above sea level. Before you reach the top station where the bridge is located, passengers must get off at the middle station.

At the middle station, enjoy the panoramic views across Langkawi and surrounding islands.

Once you reach the top station, the views are even more spectacular! Here you are on the top of Machinchang mountain and can even see as far as southern Thailand !

The cable car is RM85 per adult and RM65 per child at the time of publishing. This is the foreigner price when discounted on Klook with locals paying less. It includes entry to 3D Art Langkawi (if you buy this package).

From the top station, you can now go and explore the Langkawi SkyBridge. This is an extra charge, but it’s only an extra RM1 or 2  if you buy in advance on Klook here.

You can take the 10 minute jungle walk from the top station to the SkyBridge or take the SkyGlide. The SkyGlide is like an elevator that goes up and down the side of the mountain and is great for people with mobility issues or for kids that are just too tired to walk.

The SkyGlide is also an extra cost and, again, you can get tickets cheaper by buying in advance on Klook here .

At the base station of the SkyCab there are a range of other Langkawi island attractions including 3D Art, 6D Cinema, Sky Adventure Park and more.

See 3D Art In Paradise

Located right by the SkyCab is 3D Art Langkawi, one of those new 3D art attractions which are popping up all over the place. In fact this particular one is the second largest in the world and is fast becoming one of the Langkawi main attractions.

3D Art Langkawi is broken up into various sections including an optical illusion zone, aquarium zone, safari zone and many more. Visitors walk around the museum, taking it in turns to have their photos taken inside the art. Here you can step into exotic worlds and even step back in time – all thanks to the art of illusion.

3D art Langkawi is open daily between 9am and 6pm.

Entry cost is RM38 per adult and RM28 per child. The best deal is to buy a ticket here in conjunction with your SkyCab ticket.

Walk to Seven Wells Waterfall (Telaga Tujuh)

Known locally as Telaga Tujuh, Seven Wells Waterfall has – unsurprisingly –  seven natural falls at different levels, formed by water flowing down from the second highest mountain of Langkawi, Mount Machinchang.  

The most picturesque and dramatic waterfall on the island with a 91 metres drop, there are also great views from here if you hike to the top.  Along the way, look out for macaque monkeys, giant squirrels and great hornbills. Keep food out of sight!

You have two choices of hike. The bottom of the falls is a short 10 minute climb from the car park through the rainforest. You can bathe in the pools here if you wish. Note that this walk is quite steep but it is over quick. This area is lovely. There are toilets and a couple of shady pagodas.

The top of the falls is where you’ll find some great views, but this is a longer and steeper walk taking about an hour with 638 steps! There are also some natural pools here where you can cool off after your climb.

The falls are at their best after a lot of rain so this can be a good activity in the monsoon season, although be careful of slippery rocks and paths. We visited in January (so during the dry season) and it was still very picturesque and fun. The water is nice and cool – perfect after the hike up.

It’s located not far from the SkyCab. If you have your own vehicle, parking costs RM2. There are some food and drink stalls at the entry.

Try Snorkelling And Diving

As mentioned above, Langkawi is just amazing for a range of water sports including snorkeling and diving. During your holiday in Langkawi you can, of course, do this yourself or better still, join a Langkawi day trip where you will be taken to some of the best places in Langkawi for spotting marine life. 

One of the most popular snorkelling and diving tours is a day trip to nearby Palau Payar which is only 1 hour away by speed boat. On this gorgeous Langkawi beach, you can dive and snorkel in crystal clear water either straight from the shore or from a platform in the middle of the ocean.

As well as great marine life such as moray eels, clown fish, stone fish, parrot fish and more; you will also see exotic coral reefs too. You can swim with baby sharks (if you’re game!).

If you are looking for things to do in Langkawi at night, put taking a sunset cruise at the top of your Langkawi trip itinerary!  While great for families or a group of friends, it’s also one of the romantic things to do in Langkawi for a couple too.

There are a range of different sunset cruises you can do with some offering drinks. The best ones also serve a delicious dinner on board.  

Just imagine cruising off as the sun sets, admiring the stunning Langkawi landscape, enjoying an alcoholic beverage or two, taking a dip in the water or even enjoying the jacuzzi net as the boat heads out to sea.  On route you may even spot a dolphin or two.

Generally, all sunset cruises also include return transfers from your hotel too.

A sunset cruise is definitely one of the best Langkawi activities to do, no matter who you’re holidaying with. It was our favourite experience in Langkawi.

See Animals At Langkawi Wildlife Park

If you’re wanting to know where to go in Langkawi to see some animals then spend the day at Langkawi Wildlife Park. Here, you will not only get up close and personal to a variety of animals but also see some of Malaysia’s unique flora and fauna too.

At this Langkawi attraction, there is over 150 different animal species on show at the park including crocodiles, fish, turtles, monkeys, racoons, guinea pigs, macaws, flamingos, rabbits, hornbills, deer and more. There is also the opportunity to pat a range of animals as well as take part in the feeding program.

Don’t miss the animal talk show which runs twice daily.

Learn About Fruit At Mardi Agro Technology Park

Another one of the great places to see in Langkawi is Argo Technology Park. It’s basically a fruit farm where you can learn about a variety of local fruits.

There are tours via a truck with stops to see different fruit trees with the opportunity to feed deers at the end. It is informative and fun and the place to go if you’re looking for things to see in Langkawi with the kids.

There is also a delicious fruit buffet where you can try many different fruit.

The park is open daily from 8.30 am to 5 pm, but closed on Fridays and Saturdays.

Entry cost starts at RM20 per adult and RM10 per child and depends on exactly what you want to do.

Get Up Close At Crocodile Adventureland

If you’re intrigued by crocodiles then another one of the Langkawi top attractions is Crocodile Adventureland. Crocodile Adventureland is a 10 acre farm in Langkawi which allows visitors to see and learn more about the fearsome, yet fascinating, crocodile.

At Adventureland, you can see over 1000 different crocodiles, including the world’s largest living crocodile species.  You can also see trainers interact with crocodiles during the various shows on each day within the park.

Crocodile Adventureland is open daily from 9:30am to 6 pm.

A visit to Crocodile Adventureland is certainly one of the fun things to do in Langkawi.

Entry cost is RM40 for a foreigner or RM28 for a Malaysian if you save money by buying discounted tickets here. Otherwise, it costs more.

See Under The Sea At Underwater World Langkawi

If you enjoy animal encounters, consider visiting Underwater World Langkawi, one of the largest aquariums in Malaysia. This is definitely recommended if you are visiting with kids.  

At Underwater World, there are over 4000 different aquatic species across almost 6 acres. The aquarium is divided into multiple sections including tropical rainforest, temperate and sub-antarctic.

The kids will love seeing the colourful tropical fish as well as walking through the gigantic 15 metre long tunnel to see the sharks, stingrays, groupers and turtles. However, without a doubt the highlight of the aquarium is the Sub-Antarctic (penguin) section with chilled display tanks featuring a range of different penguins.

Try to visit during one of the feeding times, especially for the penguins. They have the latest times on their site .

Underwater World is open daily from 10am to 6pm.

This is a great attraction for the family. It’s well presented and interesting. It’s also perfect if you’re looking for activities to do in Langkawi on a rainy day as it’s one of the few Langkawi things to see that’s indoors.

Entry cost is RM48 per adult and RM40 per child if you can save money by booking here. Otherwise, it costs more. Malaysians also pay a lower rate than this on that link.

Walk Through The Paddy Fields At Laman Padi

Laman Padi is a serene eco-tourism attraction located in Pantai Cenang, the main tourist area. Spanning 13.86 acres, the living museum offers a deep immersion into traditional rice paddy cultivation amidst a lush and natural setting. The tranquil paddy field within the compound provides a picturesque and rustic experience, especially during the golden ripening season.

In addition to the paddy itself, there is an expansive exhibition showcasing the history and practices of paddy farming. Visitors can learn about rice cultivation in this museum, walk through the greenery, unwind at the pavilion or balconies and explore the surrounding herbal garden.

A hands-on approach is taken and you can smell the herbs, help plant or havest the rice (depending on the season) and more with a great guide. It’s also a good place for bird spotting.

Enjoy The Beach With Sunset Drinks

If there’s one thing better than relaxing on Pantai Cenang during the day, it’s enjoying it at sunset.

The sunsets here are perfect!

Simply sit in the sand and enjoy the show.

You can also choose to have a drink as you watch the sunset from one of the great bars. Yellow Cafe or The Cliff Restaurant and Bar are good choices for sundowners.

Watch out for fire shows on the beach afterwards!

Splash In The Water At Pantai Tengah

The best attraction in Langkawi is definitely the beach. If you love the sound of Pantai Cenang, but want a quieter stretch of beach, then Pantai Tengah is what you’re looking for.

Just down the coast from Pantai Cenang, the beach here is just as beautiful as Cenang. However, there are less accommodation options here which makes it far quieter.

Pantai Tengah is a great place to come to relax on the beach or have a quiet swim in the water. This is certainly the best place to go in Langkawi if you want a stunning beach, without loads of people but still within easy reach of the main tourist area.

Get Away From It All At Tanjung Rhu

Is Pantai Tengah still too close to the tourist hub for you and you’re wanting to know where to visit in Langkawi that you can get away from it all?

Go to Tanjung Rhu.

When it comes to Langkawi beautiful places, Tanjung Rhu is certainly up there. In fact Tanjung Rhu would have to have one of the best shorelines in all of Langkawi! The water here is crystal clear and the beach has that perfect, white powdery sand. It’s really beyond words beautiful.

Apart from a small row of food, souvenir and water sport stalls, the area is quiet and peaceful and the landscape is absolutely stunning. This is the place where you go to be secluded. There is a public area right next to the Tanjung Rhu Resort near the jetty.

It’s also the jumping off point for the mangrove cruise mentioned below . So beautiful!

Take A Mangrove Tour By Kayak Or Boat

If you’re looking for a Langkawi one day trip, a mangrove tour, either by kayak or boat, is a great way to go. It’s a fantastic way to explore one of the top nature attractions in Langkawi. It’s often listed as people’s favourite thing to do in Langkawi. I can see why.

You have two options:

• Tour through the Kubang Badak Mangrove River by kayak ( find it here ). Includes lunch at a local house.
• Tour through the Kilim Geoforest Park (UNESCO listed) by boat ( find it here ). Includes lunch at a floating restaurant.

Either option is great. Pick the one that best fits your activity level.

You will be guided through the mangroves where you will learn about the area.

Keep an eye out because you may even be lucky enough to spot exotic animals such as the white bellied sea eagles, brahminy kites, kingfishers, herons, crabs, lizards, monkeys and otters.

The guided kayak tour also includes the opportunity to swim in a secluded natural pool.

Our boat tour included a journey round the coast by sea, eagle feeding, Bat Cave (this is by foot – you exit the boat for 20 minutes and get to see the caves, monkeys and mangroves up close), Crocodile Cave (no crocs, don’t worry!) and the floating restaurant. Our guide was knowledgable and the tour well run.

I definitely recommend that if you do this, sit on the starboard side of the boat. I felt like I missed out on some of the sea journey coastal views by not sitting here. The whole route is quite touristy with plenty of people and Bat Cave was crowded. The amazing scenery made up for it.

The lunch at the Floating Restaurant was bland and boring, but it filled a hole.

Visit Waterfalls At Durian Perangin

Located on Gunung Raya is the Durian Perangin Waterfall, a stunning fourteen tier waterfall which local and tourists alike love to visit for a refreshing dip. At the foot of most of the different tiers there are translucent natural pools just perfect for a swim.

You can also take a hike to the top of the waterfall for some gorgeous views .

There are plenty of little pagodas to sit next to the water in the shade with a picnic in between splashes in the water.

This attraction is better than we expected actually. We were disappointed we didn’t bring a picnic with us and made a half day of it. There are some food, drink and souvenir stalls at the entrance.

You can visit the waterfalls at anytime of the day and entry is free making it ideal for a Langkawi budget trip.

Enjoy The Peaceful Atmosphere At Wat Koh Wanararm

Wat Koh Wanararm is a Buddhist temple in a secnic spot, not far from Kuah, the main town on the island.

The main thing to see here is Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy which is carved into a section of the limestone mountain. There are colourful Tibetan pagodas in the main courtyard as well as mosaics, zen gardens, a koi pond and golden Buddha statues. The main prayer hall is popular among Buddhists.

This temple is off the main tourist trail and a great way to find some peace for a moment while touring the island. It really is quite a sight and much bigger than the photo makes it look.

However, it can feel weird initially when visiting here – there was a lot of rubbish at the entrance when we came and a whole lot of stray dogs. It was worth it though!

Snap The Iconic Langkawi Photo At Eagle Square

Look at any Langkawi trip blog and you would have seen the iconic photo at Eagle Square. You know the image, it features the huge 12 metre eagle statue which is poised to take flight over the scenic waterfront plaza?

Eagle Square, or Dataran Lang which is its official name, is one of the Langkawi popular places that tourists flock to. The statue is located in the southeast corner of Pulau Langkawi in the town of Kuah. This is the main town on the island the statue is next to the main jetty. It also has lovely views across Kuah Bay.

Don’t leave Langkawi without getting your photo at Eagle Square!

Although maybe go to the toilet elsewhere unless you want to pay RM1!

See It All On A Helicopter Tour

The best thing about Langkawi is it’s stunning landscapes. One of the best ways to see these are on a helicopter tour.

This helicopter tour will provide you with gorgeous views across Dayang Bunting Lake and Cenang Beach. You will enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding islands, mountains and stunning water of the Andaman Sea.

Helicopter tours include return transfers from your hotel and memories that you will never forget!

Eat Everything At A Night Market

Without a doubt when it comes to what to do in Langkawi at night, the most popular attraction is the Langkawi night markets. These markets are on every night of the week from 5.30pm. They are located in a different spot each night of the week.

If you’re thinking of shopping or wondering what to buy, a good place to start is the food! The food here is absolutely delicious. Make sure you come a few nights during your time in Langkawi so you can eat everything you can!  You will not be disappointed at all and the food prices are very affordable.

As well as food, you can also pick up some Langkawi souvenirs from the markets too.

If you are looking for some Langkawi night activities, don’t miss the markets. The location of the markets are as follows:

• Monday – Ulu Melaka Market
• Tuesday – Kedawang Night Market
• Wednesday and Saturday – Kuah Langkawi Night Market
• Thursday – Temoyong Night Market
• Friday – Air Hangat Night Market
• Sunday – Padang Matsirat Night Market

Visit Koh Lipe (Thailand!)

Koh Lipe is a small island just 90 minutes ferry ride from Langkawi. You can visit here on a day trip or for longer as part of your Langkawi stay.

Koh Lipe is crazy beautiful. It’s called the “Maldives of Thailand” for a reason. It’s only 2 kilometres long by 1 kilometre wide and has fantastic beaches, great snorkelling, the frenetic energy of Thailand and more. A visit here is a great way to get a slice of Thai culture on your Malaysian adventure.

What To Do In Langkawi For 3 Days

If you’re looking for a 3 day Langkawi itinerary, here it is! If you are staying slightly longer or shorter, you can edit it to suit your needs.

You can also click here and find out full 2-5 day Langkawi itinerary.

After arriving in Langkawi, take it easy and spend the day exploring the stunning beaches nearest to your accommodation. If you’re keen on water sports, now is the time to try some out. Otherwise, hire a sun lounger and relax and take a dip in the stunning sea.

Be sure to be down at the beach for the sunset and hang around afterwards to see the fire dancers that move from bar to bar if you are in Pantai Cenang.

During the evening, explore the local streets and pick up a few souvenirs or better still head to the local night markets for dinner.

Head to the Langkawi SkyBridge by taking the Langkawi SkyCab to the top and enjoy the fantastic views.

Join an island hopping tour in the afternoon , or return to your hotel and enjoy the facilities. If you don’t do the island hopping tour, do a sunset cruise in the evening instead.

On your final day of our itinerary Langkawi, either hire your own car or hire a driver and go and explore some of the other attractions which are of interest to you. Consider places like Seven Wells Waterfall, ziplining, Tanjung Rhu beach and taking a photo at Eagle Square in bustling Kuah.

If possible, also include a mangrove kayak tour on your last day and hopefully spot some wildlife.

In the evening, watch one last sunset on the beach or enjoy some more yummy food at the night markets and pick up any final souvenirs.

Best Hotels in Langkawi

As well as the top attractions in Langkawi, I’ve also put together all my top suggestions for where to stay in Langkawi below.

While Langkawi is not very big, there are a wide range of places to stay in Langkawi as well as a wide range of locations. The attractions are also spread out but it doesn’t take long to drive to any of them. However, it may be best to shortlist the attractions you plan on visiting first and chose the location of your hotel from there.

A good option may be to split your time between two different locations, so you get two different experiences. Perhaps stay at a good value hotel whilst exploring attractions and then choose a more upmarket hotel on a stunning beach for some relaxation to end your trip. This is how we like to do it.

LUXURY – Datai Langkawi Review

The Datai Langkawi is located on a private beach in Datai Bay which is a secluded part of Langkawi.

With the rainforest on one side and the beach on the other, The Datai is beautiful, luxurious and has a wonderful beach making it a great choice if you are looking for one of the top beach resorts in Langkawi where you can really get away from it all.

It’s so luxurious and awesome that it has an amazing 5/5 rating on TripAdvisor from thousands of reviews.

There are many room types including private villas, perfect for romance or families. Many come with private pools for extra enjoyment.

There are many facilities and activities at the luxury Datai including three pools (one for adults, one for families and one for toddlers), water sports, health club and many nature activities both for children and adults.

There are four restaurants and two shops. Rates include breakfast and minibar and the villas also have a private butler service.

It’s expensive, but you also get what you pay for and this place is great. It’s the best choice for a romantic break and also works for families.

TOP CHOICE IN MAIN BEACH AREA – Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa Review

The Pelangi Beach Resort is located in a great spot in the main beach area of Langkawi, Pantai Cenang. This means you can be in the centre of things in minutes with many eating and shopping options.

There are a range of room types here as well as some fantastic facilities. Facilities include two outdoor, free-form swimming pools, a gym, sauna, squash, mini-golf, tennis, archery and bicycle rental. And if you are bringing the kids, they will love the kids club as well as the dinosaur water play area with slides.

There are also two restaurants, a lounge and a pool bar. You are also just a short walk from many other eating options. And, of course, you have a beautiful beach to enjoy.

The resort has been recently renovated as well.

BEST VALUE HOTEL – Adya Hotel Review

The Adya Hotel is located in Kuah, the largest town in Langkawi. Its central location makes things very easy as it’s surrounded by restaurants, and there is a shopping centre next door.

There are a range of room types here. All feature balconies with fantastic views. Room types include simple hotel rooms, executive rooms and stunning suites. The hotel has two infinity pools (one women’s only), a kids pool, a gym, restaurant and other services and facilities that you would expect from a 4-star hotel. Note no alcohol is allowed here.

The location of this hotel is ideal for exploring attractions such as Eagle Square, Kuah Jetty and the Kuah night market and it’s only a short 20 minute drive from the airport.

It’s a great price and definitely the best value hotel on the island, but note that it’s not in a beach area.

Getting To And Around Langkawi

The easiest way to get to Langkawi is generally to fly. Prices can be crazy cheap from other places in Malaysia making this an even better option.

Most flights come from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Penang.

If you want to travel overland, you’ll need to get to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis on the mainland of Malaysia and then take a ferry across to Kuah on Langkawi. This is quite straightforward but can end up quite time consuming depending on your start point.

Getting around Langkawi can feel more complicated. There’s not really a handy public transport system and the island is probably bigger than you imagine with tourist attractions spread out.

You’ll generally need to either hire a car or take a lot of Grab/taxis if you want to explore a lot.

Car hire is generally very affordable. You can click here to see some prices. We have also booked through Kasina directly which was great.

Grab (an app like Uber) is very handy and can be a good price. The problem is that some of the attractions in Langkawi are out of the way and you may struggle to get a Grab taxi from these places. Hiring a taxi for a day can be a better alternative.

We tend to do a combination of these things. For example, on our last trip, we hired a car for a day to go to some of the more out of the way attractions. For our other days, we visited attractions closer to Pantai Cenang and used Grab. We also did a few tours that included pick up. This worked well for us.

Langkawi – When to Go

If you’re wondering when is the best time to visit Langkawi, the short answer is that the best weather falls between November and April. This is the dry season. The water iscalm and clear with temperatures varying between 18 and 35 degrees in the daytime.

The monsoon arrives sometime in May and lasts until late October. This isn’t usually a huge deal as rain showers are usually over quickly, but we don’t recommend it for visitors who want to be able to dive or snorkel as the water is cloudy.

As a tourist, the best time to visit Langkawi is in the dry season mentioned above, although you’ll want to avoid the Christmas and new year holidays if you can as this is when Langkawi gets booked up and filled with domestic and international visitors. Room rates will be higher at this time, and you’ll need to book well in advance.

You’ll find better deals for the Langkawi islands in shoulder season around November, March and April.

1. Dataran Lang

If you’ve been a little impressed with Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio De Janeiro, wait until you look at Langkawi’s Dataran Lang. Dataran Lang, or the Eagle Square, is a scenic spot in Langkawi; but while it is known for its breathtaking scenery, what also catches the eyes of tourists is its massive sea eagle statue. 

The statue stands at a whopping 12-meter height and is one of the first sights you’ll see if you’re coming in from the entrance. 

The eagle also represents Langkawi; the Malay words Helang meaning eagle, and kawi, meaning reddish-brown make this reddish-brown eagle the symbol of the archipelago. 

This starship plaza located in Kuah Bay is one of Langkawi’s most fascinating places. For those who are looking to take mesmerizing photographs and create memorable moments, Dataran Lang is the perfect place to be. Because it tends to get crowded, especially during peak visiting times, it is best to visit Dataran Lang early in the morning. Early morning is also recommended for those who want to avoid the midday heat. However, if you’re coming in later in the day, it’s absolutely fine; hanging around in the plaza is exceptionally relaxing because of the cooler temperature during the evenings. 

Sunset is a must-watch at Dataran Lang as the amalgamation of various hues of purple, orange, yellow and blue beyond the massive eagle make for a very picturesque sight.

After watching the beautiful sunset, head over to your resort and tuck in the night, so you’re all freshened up for the morning.

2. Island Hopping

Your Langkawi trip is not complete if you skip the island hopping tour. Make your way to the jetty and book a boat tour to take your island hopping. A. Dayang Bunting Island

The first destination during the first island hopping tour is Dayang Bunting. Dayang Bunting, or the ‘Pregnant Maiden,’ is a mountainous island known for its unique landscape.

The shape of the mountain looks fascinatingly similar to a pregnant woman laying down for a rest and makes for a slightly amusing scene. Dayang Bunting is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Geoparks, and if that doesn’t tell you how lovely the island is, I don’t know what will. 

Across the Geoforest Park at Pulau Dayang Bunting, a 10-minute trek through the thick trees takes you to the main lake, a fascinating spot for people to relax, swim, and kayak. It also holds a fascinating culture; many locals believe that infertile women may regain their fertility if they dip in this freshwater lake. You can spend the rest of the day swimming and boating in the lake.

B. Beras Basah Island

Spend an hour at the Beras Basah, an island of pearly white sand and turquoise water. You can spend the time swimming in the refreshing water or making sandcastles. Getting a simple tan or relaxing under a coconut tree will do for those who prefer to be lazier. 

3. Nasi Dagang Pak Malau

You’ll be starving so head over to this underrated restaurant that serves some of the most delicious meals you’ll ever eat. This small neighborhood restaurant is known for its Nasi Dagang, a dish you cannot miss.

The food is mainly traditional Malay food, with the fish gulai as one of the main attractions. Its special rice called nasi kandar is cooked with fenugreek seeds and various spices, something you can only get in this restaurant.

You can dine in the restaurant or bring your food to the gazebo in the backyard, facing the rice field, and enjoy the warm sunny breeze while having your lunch.

4. Makam Mahsuri

A five-minute drive from the restaurant, Makam Mahsuri is a historical place that comes with a dark history. It is believed that a beautiful woman named Mahsuri married a chieftain’s brother, but the chieftain’s wife became jealous and spread rumors about Mahsuri’s loyalty to her husband. As a result, Mahsuri was banished and sentenced to death here. But people from all over Malaysia frequently stop by here to pay their respects to the spirit of Mahsuri, and now it has become an intriguing place to be. 

A Mahsuri well here is known to make its drinker beautiful.

Don’t miss the Kedah house not far away from the Mahsuri well. This is the typical Malay house that most people live in Langkawi during the era of Mahsuri.

5. Sky Cable Car

The next day, take the infamous SkyCab, a Langkawi cable car service that takes you to the top of the mountain in Langkawi. SkyCab takes you on a scenic route overlooking Langkawi Sky Bridge and the archipelago’s gorgeous landscape; an aerial view of the islands is an experience you can’t put into words. 

We highly recommend purchasing the ticket online to spend your precious time enjoying the scenery and exploring different viewpoints on top of the mountain. The queue at the ticketing counter can be quite long during the holiday season.

6. Sky Bridge

From the middle station of the cable car, you can get a full view of the sky bridge. But hang on, I am sure you want to walk on the bridge, so take another cable to reach the top to climb the Sky Bridge. 

The breathtaking bridge overlooks the archipelago and gives you views for days. When you reach the top station, you will be guided to the bridge, also counted among the world’s largest curved suspended bridges. 

If you’re not afraid of heights, take a glimpse down the glass patches and marvel at the height. 

7. Oriental Village

When you come back down, head to the Oriental Village at the base station to calm your adrenaline-filled nerves. From souvenir shops to unique Instagrammable spots, the Oriental Village is a relaxing place to go. If you’re a sucker for local cuisine, the Oriental Village is where you’ll get mouth-watering delights.

8. 3D Art Langkawi

Just a stone’s throw from the Oriental Village is the 3D Art Langkawi, a gallery where you can take a look at the impressive local art and take pictures against the 3D interactive backdrops. 

9. Telaga Tujuh Waterfall

A scenic and natural path takes you to Telaga Tujuh waterfall, which cascades down from approximately 90 meters above. Now it is during the dry season, so the volume of value of water is relatively less.

You only need to walk about 200m from the entrance through a paved walkway to reach the bottom of the waterfall. Then, walk up a few more hundred steps if you are adventurous to stand on top of the waterfall, taking a breathtaking view from above.

10. Black Sand Beach

On your way back, head to Black Sand Beach at Tanjung Rhu to take unique photographs that will act as the perfect ice-breakers on dating sites. There are several beaches along the way, but Black Sand Beach is one you can’t really miss.

Don’t forget to visit Tanjung Rhu beach, only a few minutes walk from Black Sand Beach.

And when you are hungry, stop at Scarborough Fish and Chips, a quaint cafe that serves local and international cuisine. Enjoy the sunset dinner against the spectacular backdrop.

11. MARDI Agrotechnology Park

Take a soothing, guided fruit farm tour and explore the fruit orchards of heavenly fruits, including durians, rambutans, and star fruits at Mardi during your Langkawi trip.

At MARDI, you can eat at a delicious fruit buffet while the guide demonstrates how to make an origami grasshopper out of only one fruit leaf.

MARDI will take you to its grape vineyard, where you can pick till you get tired, and later, you can head to the freshwater pond to feed the catfish.

12. Kompleks Kraf Langkawi

Kompleks Kraf Langkawi is a cultural hub that contains handicrafts, clothes, souvenirs, artwork, and woodworks of Malaysian craftsmen. So if you fumble about where to get the perfect gift for your relatives back home, this is the answer you’re looking for. 

There is a Muzium Warisan (Legacy Muzeum) in the complex, where you can learn about Malaysian culture, history, and heritage through the various exhibits.

13 Berjaya Langkawi Resort

You need a good night’s sleep and a comfortable place to reenergize for the following day during your Langkawi trip. A private beach, Berjaya Langkawi Resort is the perfect place to take a romantic stroll. When you get tired of exploring and want just to take a breather, this gorgeous beach transforms into the ideal retreat. 

It’s also a mesmerizing spot for a romantic picnic or, if you’d like, dinner at the nearby Thai restaurant, Pahn Thai. Over here, you can choose to take a seat facing the Andaman sea, watching the sunset while enjoying your dinner.

14. Kilim Karst Geoforest Park mangrove tour

A UNESCO World Heritage Geopark, Kilim Geoforest Park, is a naturalist’s dream come true. The geopark offers private tours, but once again, if you go with Tiger Line, you’re bound to get a seat. The boat trip will travel along the river, flanked by mangrove forests all around. From there, you can make several stops depending on where you want to go.

A. Fish Farm Restaurant

While you can choose to omit this, visiting the fish farm restaurant is a magical experience. From learning about how fish are farmed and meeting horseshoe crabs to eating, the fish farm restaurant offers a fantastic experience.

B. Crocodile Cave

Made for adventurists, the crocodile cave is an arched cave that acts as a natural tunnel and was developed in limestone. Since the Crocodile Cave can only be explored if there’s a low tide, make sure to check in with the locals about the best time to visit.

C. Eagle feeding experience

When you get to the other side, you can take some time off in the water to eagle feed at Pulau Singa Besar, where the swarm of eagles is coming towards you. This is one of the best things you must do in Langkawi.

You will spot two types of eagle, the Brahminy Kite Eagle and the White Bellied Sea Eagle. Take note of the belly of the White Bellied Sea Eagle, which is the same eagle statue at the Dataran Lang.

D. Karstic Hills

The Kilim Karst Geoforest also includes the Karstic Hills, a vertical rock formation of limestone cliffs dating back 500 million years and presenting dramatic but ethereal backdrops.

E. Bats Cave

A place where Batman would thrive, Bat Cave is the home of hundreds of fruit bats that hang from the cave’s ceiling. You can capture the caves but make sure you don’t disrupt the bats.

15. Other attractions

A. If time is allowable, other attractions you may want to consider are the night market at Kuah Town. However, it only opened on Wednesday and Saturday, so it did not fit our itinerary.

B. Pantai Cenang (Cenang Beach) is a 2 km long magnificent beach at the western shoreline of Langkawi. There are all types of water sports available and bustling food stores and shops along the main street. Don’t miss out on this place, especially if you stay at one of the many resorts here.

How to get there and move around

The easiest way to go to Langkawi is by flight if you come from Kuala Lumpur or any other part far away from Langkawi. It has an international airport which means there are direct flights from certain countries.

Upon arriving, one of the best ways to get around is to rent a car. You can request to pick up the car at the Langkawi airport. Since many tourist attractions are at different locations, it can be expensive to book a taxi or e-hailing. Do note that it is right-hand drive in Malaysia, but the traffic in Langkawi is not heavy, so it is pretty easy to drive here.

If you decide to drive to Langkawi, remember to book the ferry ticket, which takes your car to Langkawi from Kuala Perlis. The cost depends on the size of the vehicle, but the most crucial part is to book the ticket in advance, or you may not be able to bring your car to Langkawi, especially during the peak holiday season. 20 Top Things to Do in Langkawi, Malaysia

You would need weeks—and a lot of motivation—to cover all the top things to do in Langkawi, a popular tourist island and top destination in Malaysia .

Malaysia’s big duty-free island on the west coast attracts a steady stream of locals, weekenders from Kuala Lumpur, families, and budget backpackers. Activities in Langkawi range from lounging in soft sand for free to pricey attractions like the mountain cable car and everything between. The hardest part about it all is deciding what to do first!

Ride the Cable Car

Langkawi’s cable car is the most popular thing to do on the island. The many turnstiles for the queues indicate that people must be willing to wait a very long time. The steep ride up Mount Mat Cincang stops at a midpoint then continues onward; both stops have cafes and platforms for enjoying the stunning views of the island.

Looking down on Pantai Cenang far below is interesting, but the real excitement comes from the ride itself!

Visit a Famous 3-D Gallery

The three-dimensional art and optical illusions inside the Art in Paradise museum are fascinating and creative. With over 100 interactive art pieces, the gallery claims to be the second-largest 3-D museum in the world. Even still, you can see it all in an hour unless you really linger to enjoy the air conditioning.

Although the main purpose of visiting the museum seems to be just to get fun, quirky photos of yourself in impossible situations, there are some very visually impressive works of art. You’ll exit with enough creative material to make you an InstaCelebrity.

Go Island Hopping

Langkawi is the largest island of 104 in the archipelago. Very few of the islands are inhabited.

Understandably, island-hopping excursions are the most popular thing to do on Langkawi. Neighboring islands in the marine park are mostly undeveloped; they host mangroves, caves, and enough rainforest canopy to keep birdwatchers very busy.

Half-day or full-day excursions are available for all levels of comfort. The best trips include an unforgettable visit to the Bat Cave (Gua Kelawar). You won’t find a vigilante billionaire’s crime-fighting gadgets and a rocket car, but you’ll definitely find gigantic fruit bats. Don’t wake them!

Eat in the Night Markets

The night markets on Langkawi attract a busy mix of locals and tourists; all arrive around sunset to enjoy cheap, delicious food. Tasty local treats can be sampled for as little as 25 cents.

Some of Penang's famous offerings can be tried without the commitment of ordering it in a restaurant for dinner. Although there aren’t many places to sit and enjoy your meal, you'll get to enjoy fantastic people watching.

The night market is held in a different place each night. The markets in Kuah and Pantai Cenang are potentially the largest and most popular for tourists because of the convenient location. Arrive a little before sunset to beat the crowds during the busy season.

Although some treats such as nasi lemak are served in paper, other choices are served in plastic or Styrofoam containers. Both are a problem on the island . Consider bringing your own cup or bowl, and try to decline the plastic bag given with every small purchase. The Kasbah traveler’s cafe located not far from the Pantai Cenang night market will loan you reusable containers for night markets.

Learn About Rice Cultivation

The Laman Padi Rice Garden can be reached on foot by walking north from Pantai Cenang. The small gallery (in English) is surrounded by pleasant rice terraces and places to sit. The landscaping is spacious and serene. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about this labor-intensive staple that feeds a majority of the world’s population, this is your chance. Stroll around unguided or participate in a planting workshop.

Snorkel at Payar Island

The area around nearby Payar Island has been a marine park since 1985, so the coral is in fairly good condition. Don’t worry: Those shipwrecks on the bottom weren’t full of customers. Old boats were sunk along with tires and other objects to form an artificial reef that is thriving.

Snorkeling day trips are a popular way to get closer to marine life. Sailing to the island by catamaran is a nice option. For members of the family not comfortable with snorkeling, there is an underwater observation chamber and covered deck. The park hosts some simple picnic facilities, including a restroom. The four uninhabited islands attract a lot of visitors on weekends, so try to go on a weekday.

Visit the Waterfalls

The Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls (Seven Wells) is in the northwest corner of the island.

The falls are Inconvenient if you’re staying at Pantai Cenang or Kuah, but other attractions in the area make the trip worth the effort. If not too tired and wet after the falls, you can walk to the cable car or the Oriental Village in 15 minutes or less.

The waterfalls have two viewing areas. The steep trail to the lower area only takes 10 minutes from the parking lot. Stick your head under the falls to cool off. The falls are often just a trickle during the dry season .

Visitors who are reasonably fit can climb the many steep stairs to the seven pools and have a dip. Swimming at the top is safer than it sounds, as long as you stay away from the edges, although it isn't very suitable for small children. A slippery rock serves as a natural water slide for locals.

Motorbike Around the Island

As with most Southeast Asian islands large enough for paved roads, renting a scooter and driving around can be an incredibly enjoyable experience. Once away from the traffic of Kuah (the main town) and Pantai Cenang (the most popular beach), the island’s interior has (mostly) well-maintained roads with plenty of nice scenery.

Langkawi is a very sizable island. You could easily spend a couple of days on a scooter just exploring, just running between the top things to do in Langkawi. Renting a bicycle is an option, too, although some interior roads will be tough to cycle.

The police on Langkawi are adamant about enforcing helmet laws. They may also ask for an international driving permit if you end up passing through one of the sporadic roadblocks.

Go Duty-Free Shopping

Like Tioman Island farther to the south, Langkawi enjoys duty-free status . The tax exemption applies to shopping purchases, too, not just sunset cocktails.

Although you may or may not be interested in carrying heavy kitchenware (a popular item for sale) back home, lots of foreign visitors do leave with new luggage sets. New suitcases are then filled with duty-free chocolate, clothing, cosmetics, and other items.

You’ll find lots of duty-free shops (ZON is the most popular) ranging in size from convenience stores to shopping malls. Shops in the airport are predictably the most expensive, while department stores in Kuah are the cheapest.

Visit Underwater World

Probably the largest of indoor tourist attractions on the island, Underwater World is located at the southern end of Pantai Cenang. If you can't get under the surface yourself, this is the best way to see marine life. The giant aquarium could serve as a good indoor option for families on days with too much sun or too little.

Get Into the Canopy

The SkyTrex adventure is an obstacle course of bridges, ropes, swings, and zip lines at dizzying tree-top heights. Not only does an afternoon at SkyTrex allow a peek at the rainforest canopy from above the ground, but it’s also a good workout! All is safe, as long as you’ve got the guts. There is even a scaled-down course for younger members of the family and "chicken exits" if you want to bail halfway through. Tickets must be purchased online in advance.

Explore the Mangroves

Mangroves are an extremely important part of Langkawi's ecosystem; they serve as a habitat and refuge for many kinds of creatures. For nature enthusiasts, the mangroves are a veritable playground stocked with eagles, an assortment of other birds, fish, snakes, monkeys, and more. Water allows visitors to sneak up on wildlife easier than on foot, that is, assuming you aren't on the jet ski safari—also an option.

Exploring the mangroves by kayak is certainly the most rewarding, but it is also the most strenuous. Jet ski safaris are as loud, rambunctious, and expensive as they sound. You won’t sneak up on much wildlife, but you may feel as though you’re on the set of a James Bond film!

Go Visit Thailand for a Day

Koh Lipe, one of Thailand’s fringe islands, can be reached by taking a 90-minute ferry from Langkawi. There is actually an immigration point on the tiny island.

Thailand offers most nationalities a visa-free exemption for 30 days. In theory, you could pop over, do some snorkeling, spend a night, then return to Malaysia when you like.

Koh Lipe’s cuteness and walkability have cost it in recent years. The tiny island, traversable by foot, gets busy. The primary reasons to visit are the diving and beach-accessible snorkeling.

Consider adding Koh Lipe to your trip if you've got bonus time and want to add a second country. Or if you just really want to boast about visiting an island in Thailand during your trip to Malaysia, a good enough reason on its own!

See Eagle Square

One of the most iconic spots in Langkawi, Eagle Square is found in Kuah, the largest town on the island. The centerpiece is a huge 12-meter high statue of an eagle, wings outstretched. You can walk the beautiful star-shaped promenade along the water and stop for a bite to eat at the restaurants and cafes in the area.

Visit the Prime Minister's Museum

One of the most intriguing museums in Langkawi is the Galeria Perdana where you'll find the gifts and awards that Dr. Mahatir Mohamad, a former prime minister of Malaysia, received during his tenure.

You'll be surprised to see what is included in the collection. Formula One racing cars, musical instruments, and vases embellished with the prime minister's image are among the treasures in this beautiful museum with hand-painted ceilings.

Soak in the Hot Springs

At Air Hangat (hot water) Village , 14 kilometers north of Kuah Town, you'll find a modern facility with three tiers of natural saltwater hot springs said to have healing properties. You can soak in the very hot springs in the various public areas or opt for a private open-air Jacuzzi. The village has an on-site restaurant serving Malaysian, Thai, and Indonesian food. Massages and spa treatments will complete your relaxing visit.

See the Birds

The 5.5-acre Langkawi Wildlife Park and Bird Paradise houses over 150 species of colorful birds including toucans and flamingos in a natural setting. There are trees, gardens, and waterfalls to explore. Visitors will also encounter raccoons and crocodiles and even have a chance to feed some of the birds and animals.

Learn About Agro-Tech

The MARDI Langkawi Agro Technology Park showcases the use of innovation and technology in sustainably farming fruits and vegetables. Exotic tropical fruits like mangosteen, durian, and dragon fruit are grown at the park and visitors can sample some of the varieties as they learn about growing local produce.

The beautiful, tropical park includes a technology information center, fruit farms, sheltered hi-tech vegetable farms, and areas for recreation.

Be Entertained at the Oriental Village

Located at the base of the Sky Cab cable car and Sky Bridge, Oriental Village is an Asian-themed park and village with traditional entertainment, performances, and reproductions of typical Asian buildings. There are shops and souvenir stands throughout the complex.

While you visit you will be entertained by jugglers, martial artists, and musicians. performers. Interactive activities include learning how to fly a traditional kite or having your palm read.

Brave the Langkawi Sky Bridge

Not for those with a fear of heights, the famous 125-meter long Langkawi Sky Bridge is one of the most popular attractions in Langkawi. It's the longest free-span curved bridge in the world. You can walk the pedestrian bridge and see marvelous views of the countryside, the surrounding islands, Mat Cincang Mountain, and the Seven Pools Waterfalls. To reach the bridge, which is open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily, take the Langkawi Cable Car to the summit.

My Perfect 4 Days in Langkawi Itinerary

Need some help planning your 4 days in Langkawi? Langkawi itinerary advice is a dime a dozen these days. Which is a good thing when it comes to planning a Langkawi holiday. Especially if time is limited. Nothing worse than missing something you could have seen or done had you only known about it. Despite Langkawi’s often ‘sleepy island’ persona, a Langkawi itinerary of 4 days will keep you plenty busy. I would personally recommend at least 7 to 10 days, to truly get a feel for the archipelago and get into the island groove. But if a long weekend is pretty much all you’ve got? Here is my take on a 4 days in Langkawi itinerary. Updated Dec 2023

Like any popular destination, new arrivals to Langkawi will immediately be bombarded with brochures and billboards touting redundant information on the most ‘popular’ Langkawi sights and attractions. Some of those folks simply have large marketing budgets, thus the loudest voices. Are they truly ‘not-to-be-missed’? Probably not. Especially considering how much attention they are trying to get. Or at the very least they have a more popular competitor lurking in the shadows. A competitor who may well be able to pass their advertising savings to their customers by offering lower prices across the board. Bet you never thought of that eh?

But I digress. Let’s cut to the chase with my mix-n-match 4-day Langkawi itinerary samples. Without including arrival and departure days, because no one wants to hit the ground running, am I right? And on your last day, you will most likely be hugging a palm tree wishing you didn’t have to leave. So, let’s just make the most of those 4 full days in between, shall we?

Day 1: Langkawi Itinerary

On day one, first time visitors are typically ready to head to Langkawi’s top sightseeing venues. Conveniently, both the Panorama Cable Car (Sky Cab) AND Sky Bridge are both located at Oriental Village in Machinchang Geoforest Park . You will want to get an early start and beat the crowds, because these two sightseeing stars are very popular. There will be plenty of local cafes and restaurants along the way to grab a quick breakfast or you can explore the many food options available at the village itself.

Your eyes may glaze over at the mere thought of a tourist hot spot, but trust me, you must go there! It is truly a not-to-be-missed! And the sooner you go the better as it can be weather dependent. Don’t put this stop off until the end of your trip. If it looks like a sunny day, go for it, because you never know what the weather may be like tomorrow.

If you have kids in tow, take advantage of Oriental Village’s money saving ticket packages, because there is a lot of extra fun to be had at Oriental Village . I recommend getting a package that includes the Art in Paradise 3D Museum because it’s an excellent additional. Do note that there is no entry fee for the village itself, only for the various activities. You can window shop and people watch to your heart’s desire for free.

Are you a waterfall fan? If you are, then just up the road from Oriental Village is Seven Wells (Telaga Tujuh) Waterfall . A short (ish) walk up from the parking lot and you will immediately see the photo-worthy main waterfall. It’s a further trek up the steep jungle stairs to the top, where there are several pools to swim in, as well as toilets and a changing room.

If you do opt to head to the top and hang out a bit, you will eat up your sightseeing time, so keep that in mind. You can always come back another day, when you do your around the island tour. No entry fee is required at Seven Wells, however there is a small parking fee for cars and motorbikes.

There are a few places to eat adjacent to the Seven Wells parking lot, including fresh coconut stalls and a mini mart. Prefer a picturesque waterfront lunch option? Head back to Perdana Quay and you will find a diverse selection of restaurants along the Telaga Harbour boardwalk .

Alternatively, you can beeline to Padang Matsirat , home of the Field of Burnt Rice , where you will find an abundance of local eateries, food stalls and souvenir shops. (Just tell your taxi, “Field of Burnt Rice”) It is also a perfect opportunity to try a bowl of famous Laksa at nearby Laksa Kaw or cool off with a tasty Cendol or ABC at Warung Kak Imah (both are nearby on the main road). The Field of Burnt Rice is down the small road in the back of the parking lot. It is just a small house and a memorial plaque, but it’s worth a stop by just for a brief, but significant, bit of insight into Langkawi’s history.

To get to the small historic site, you will need to pass through a small building filled with various souvenir vendors. Don’t walk too fast because there are some excellent deals to be had on batik, t-shirts and local snacks.

Think your day is done yet? Nope, not yet! A Sunset Cruise would be an excellent wrap up to your first day in Langkawi. Tropical Charters offers a very fun 3-hour sunset cruise aboard their trimaran, Seasation. Daily departures are at 5pm sharp for a cruise around the waterfront. Inclusive of free-flow cocktails and mocktails, a salt water Jacuzzi, on board BBQ buffet and a glorious sunset. They have music too! And the Seasation’s spacious deck is the perfect place to show off your island dance moves or relax under the starry evening skies.

*Alternative adventure activity for Day 1: Island Horses Trail Ride

My Two Cents: *If you don’t have your own transportation, you will have no problem getting a taxi or Grab Car to and from the Pantai Kok/ Oriental Village area. So, unless you are flush with cash, there is usually no need to have a taxi wait for you. *Be sure to bring swim wear, towel or a change of clothes, in case you find the waterfalls irresistible. Actually, you should always be prepared for a quick dip during your 4 days in Langkawi because after all you are on an island. *And please, don’t feed the monkeys! It makes them more dependent on humans for food, but they can also bite. That cute photo is not worth a trip to the emergency room.

Day 2: Langkawi Itinerary

Day two’s Langkawi itinerary options come with a pick up from your hotel or guest house. You’re on your own for breakfast, but by now you have probably already sourced something near your accommodation. Better yet, grab something you can eat utensil-free or can save for a snack later, because today is Mangrove Tour day with Dev’s Adventure Tours!

Langkawi has loads of mangroves and provides an excellent opportunity to see a wide range of diverse flora and fauna. From swimming monkeys, otters, and monitor lizards to snakes and bats. And since over 200 species of birds call Langkawi home, you will see a few of the mangrove bird regulars as well. The 5+ hour mangrove tour generally starts in the morning (not including your pick-up time).

The tour includes a quiet cruise through the waterways, a visit to a bat filled cave and if time allows a quick stop at a secluded beach. All the while observing nature at its best, along the muddy banks and various limestone formations. Your guide will share his or her vast knowledge with you along the way and a delicious local lunch is also included, as is water.

Now, just for the record, there are mangrove tours and there are mangrove tours. The reason I recommend Dev’s Adventure Tours for your mangrove excursion is that the tour is not only affordable, but it comes with a licensed, knowledgeable (and passionate) naturalist. ‘Some’ mangrove tours are basically boat rides through the mangroves with an occasional finger point at wildlife.

Trust me on this one, mangroves can be quite fascinating and you will want to get the most from of your mangrove experience. Dev’s is also one of the few tour companies who will not cancel a trip due to the ‘boat not being full’. Shared ‘group tours’ leave as scheduled with (as of 2022) a minimal of four people. Please double check with them on that, as the minimal number may vary, depending on the tour.

You will be pleasantly pooped after your adventures in the mangroves. And a little down time poolside or at a beach near your hotel would be an excellent way to recharge before dinner.

The Aseania Resort and Spa has a Malaysia Cultural Show and buffet dinner four nights a week that I can highly recommend. It is one of Langkawi’s not-so-well-known gems, if I may say so myself. The venue is poolside with a backdrop to an adjacent rainforest and it all looks quite magical throughout the evening. A full buffet allows guests to try generous selections of local foods, from satay to fresh seafood and all the non-alcoholic beverages you desire. Alcoholic drinks are available, but are sold separately. *Updated Dec 2023-  Cultural Show not resumed yet…

The show itself consists of traditional dancing, music and fire twirling, performed by local professionals who wow the crowds with their talent. On stage photo ops are too fun to pass up, so don’t be shy when they invite you on stage!

If a leisurely bicycle ride through the countryside sounds enticing, then option two for the Day 2 agenda could allow you the best of both sightseeing worlds. The Nature Cycling Tour , offered by Dev’s Adventure Tours , typically has a morning tour or an afternoon tour; 8:30am or 3:30pm. If you take the morning cycling tour, you will have plenty of time later to wrap up your day with Dev’s late afternoon Sunset Mangrove Tour .

The Nature Cycling Tour is inclusive of transportation and water. The tour is a 3-4 hour leisurely ride through a fishing village and several kampungs (villages). Wildlife and nature spotting along the way come with narratives from your accompanying naturalist who will be happy to answer any questions you have about nature, wildlife and local culture. A stop at the wet market is usually on the agenda as well as a visit to Buffalo Park , where you will get to sample ice cream made from Water Buffalo milk. It is delicious by the way and the Water Buffalo are adorable. *Buffalo Park closed January 2020

After the cycling adventure, you will have plenty of time to head to the beach for lunch and some beach time or do a poolside recharge at your hotel.

But the day isn’t over just yet. Dev’s Adventure Tours’ new Sunset Mangrove Tour offers a visit to the mangroves during the late afternoon and wraps up the mangrove tour with sunset and a delicious dinner at a local floating restaurant. With the usual mangrove boat traffic having already come and gone, the Sunset Mangrove Tour can be downright romantic!

*Alternative adventure activities for Day 2: Dev’s Kayak Mangrove Tour and Mega Watersports Jet Ski Tour

My Two Cents: *If you opt to take the Nature Cycling Tour, dress for comfort and wear proper cycling footwear (not flip flops). But just a heads up, (ladies) may want to be mindful of showing ‘too much skin’. You will be making a few stops along the way and meeting locals, so it’s just proper etiquette. But again, this is just my two cents. *You will also want to have sunscreen and insect repellent with you.

Day 3: Langkawi Itinerary

Island tour (rental car or taxi) skull sand beach temuran waterfall kraft komplex tanjung rhu beach eagle square lagenda park night market.

Day 3 of my Langkawi itinerary is about exploring the island on your own. I personally think that having your own set of wheels every day is not necessary. But renting your own transportation for at least one day allows first time visitors to take an island tour at their own pace. At a glance Langkawi may look easy-peasy, and it is for the most part, but it can also get confusing. Heading clockwise and generally keeping a clockwise direction in mind, from any starting point, will help keep the island drive slightly more organized.

And as you can see from the basic map below, the main roads typically skirt the coastline and cross through the middle in a few places. Local eateries and roadside food vendors make their appearances at regular intervals, so don’t worry about being hungry or thirsty as you will have loads of options for refueling along the way.

Taking the road from Telaga Harbor northeast towards Tanjung Rhu Beach is a lovely drive with little room for error and plenty of scenic vistas along the way. While in the Telaga Harbor area, if you still want to see the ‘top’ of Seven Wells Waterfall, now is your chance. There are also two other waterfalls along the driving route; Temuran Waterfall and Durian Waterfall.

Heading northeast through the Machinchang Geoforest Park there will be a northbound road that leads to the Datai Resort. Well past the Crocodile Farm (which is not on this recommended Langkawi itinerary), continue driving north on the well-paved road. As the road (Jalan Datai) reaches the sea and curves left, Pantai Pasir Tengkorak (Skull Sand Beach) will be on the right hand side.

Skull Sand Beach is a small but gorgeous local beach that can really draw a crowd on the weekends. The sand is white, the water is relatively clear and there are plenty of shade trees. But it also has historic significance which is explained in two seaside markers. Named Skull Sand Beach because once upon a time more than a few bodies/ body parts floated their way to these shores from the nearby ex-penal colony island of Koh Tarutao , Thailand. You can see Koh Tarutao looming large across the adjacent waters.

Just up the road, still heading north, is Air Terjun Temurun (Temuran Waterfalls). Temuran Waterfalls has three tiers and is notably the tallest waterfall in Langkawi. The waters cascade 30-meters to the pool below. As with any waterfall, it will be much more dramatic during the rainy season. But it still a beautiful location for a picnic or a dose of nature.

Backtracking to the main road and taking a left, head north and you will reach Pantai Teluk Yu (Shark Bay Beach). Across the road (and down a bit) from the beach is Komplex Kraft (Craft Complex) which is well worth a visit and can easily take an hour or so to explore because it is so interesting. The complex covers about 32 acres with a main building housing three museums with highlights on culture, heritage and the wedding practices of the 13 states of Malaysia. It’s an insightful look at Malaysian culture and entry is free.

Continuing onward, the road will veer to the right and smack into the roundabout of Padang Lalang . If you take the road to the left (north) you will arrive at the pristine sandy shores of Pantai Tanjung Rhu. Until recently this stretch of public beach was just a beautiful beach with a couple of food and drink vendors. Now, however, there are a few businesses along the waterfront including a jet ski and parasail operation and a small seaside hotel.

Tanjung Rhu Beach is still lovely and has one of the best Fish and Chips restaurants in Langkawi located there. Scarborough Fish & Chips offers a shady lunch spot adjacent to the sea and they aren’t too bothered if you linger beyond lunch. If you prefer to eat ‘more like a local’, to the north you will find several roadside vendors offering diverse selections of traditional foods and beverages.

Had your fill of beaches and waterfalls? Head back to the roundabout and turn left (east). Jalan Ayer Hangat leads you south into Kuah town. Along the way you will pass Ayer Hangat Hot Springs , Durian Perangin Waterfall and Galeria Perdana , but the Kuah Ferry Terminal Jetty is your ultimate goal because your next itinerary stop is Eagle Square .

Inexpensive parking is available at the Kuah Ferry Terminal Jetty and it is just a short walk across the parking lot to Dataran Lang (Eagle Square). Yes, it may look like a cheesy tourist thing, but it’s worth a visit just for the photo op alone. Adding your own Eagle Square photo to the slew already posted on Instagram is akin to the modern day version of carving your name on a tree. Nothing says, ‘I was at Eagle Square’ better than an Eagle Square selfie! It’s open daily and there is no entry fee.

While you are in the neighborhood, the 50-hectare Lagenda Langkawi Dalam Taman (Lagenda Park) is right next door to Eagle Square. The waterfront garden museum contains 17 sculptures depicting various scenes from the legends and myths of Langkawi. Originally opened in 1996, the park’s stone residents are showing their wear and tear a bit, but the grounds themselves are still well-maintained, picturesque and stroll-worthy.

You are probably thinking of food by the end of this day’s adventures and a Langkawi Night Market is the perfect place to go with an appetite. There is a night market every night of the week at different locations across the island. Two of those nights are Kuah locations which would be quite convenient if you happen to be winding up your around the island tour on a Kuah night market night. But since you have transportation it will be easy for you to visit a night market either way.

On an environmental note, you will be an absolute island hero if you bring your own food container and reusable bags with you to the night market. In fact any effort to be plastic or styrofoam free while you are visiting Langkawi will make you a hero in many people’s hearts. Especially those who are working towards the goal of a plastic and styrofoam free Langkawi. Thank you in advance and bon appetite!

*Alternative adventure activity for Day 3: Parasailing at Tanjung Rhu Beach or a side Day Trip to Pulau Tuba

My Two Cents: *Motorbikes can be oh so fun, but driving one all day long may take its toll. Do consider the distances you are undertaking for the day and gauge your capabilities accordingly. Sightseeing and keeping one’s eyes on the road can also be a challenge. Especially for first time visitors. But if you insist, please wear a helmet and be extra careful. I would personally recommend renting a car. *Be sure to have a change of clothes and your swimsuit with you because you will have several opportunities to get wet.

*Do not leave valuables in your car or motorbike if you can avoid it, regardless of being in a remote location or a seemingly people infested parking lot. It takes less than one minute to quietly break a window and unlock a door or jimmy open a motorbike storage space. *Also be mindful of leaving valuables unattended on the beach or at a waterfall. This would also be the case if monkeys are present, because to a monkey a bag or day pack could contain tasty treats and they are quite good at snatching bags and climbing trees in the blink of an eye.

*As I mentioned earlier, please do not feed any wildlife, including monkeys along the roadside as this also puts them at high risk to get run over by a car after you are long gone. If you are taking a taxi for the day and the driver is pro monkey feeding, please decline the offer and feel free to tell him or her why.

Day 4: Langkawi Itinerary

On your last full day, a standard 3-island, Island Hopping excursion would let you tick off a few more Langkawi sights from your list. The standard Island Hopping is a quick 3-4 hour offshore jaunt to the Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park and Pulau Dayang Bunting; home of Tasik Dayang Bunting (Lake of the Pregnant Maiden). The ‘shared’ group tour boat option can range from 35-ringgit on up and may or may not include a pick up from your hotel or guest house. 9:00am and 2:00pm are the usual pick up times from predesignated locations in Pantai Cenang.

If you prefer to depart from Kuah, the island hopping boats leave from Pekan Rabu. Be sure to grab breakfast before your pick-up time because food options are not included and island hopping vendor selections are very limited.

The boats typically have up to twelve passengers. If you prefer a ‘private’ boat, that can also be arraigned with a much higher price tag. In a shared boat Island Hop, do not expect a special tour guide to be on board. This is just an inexpensive, simple (but fun) boat ride from Point A to Point B and Point C. You should also bring your own water, towel, etc. as they are not inclusive on this adventure.

The first stop at Pulau Dayang Bunting allows guests up to an hour to do the quicki-ish hike to the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden , take a swim and then off to see the ‘ Eagle Watching ’. Eagle ‘Feeding’ is a big no-no in the eyes of local naturalists and environmentalists so I only recommend Eagle Watching, which is essentially stopping near Pulau Singa Besar (Big Lion Island) and scanning the skies for hungry birds. Sea Eagles and Brahminy Kites top the list of birds that frequent the area to dive for fish.

Lastly, a 30 to 40-minute stop at the blindingly white-sand beach of Pulau Beras Basah (Wet Rice Island) for a swim and a few selfies. You will be able to rent a mask and snorkel here as well as buy a few snacks. The sun will be high (and strong) by the time you reach this third island, so be sure to lather up with sunscreen and/or wear a hat.

The standard Island Hopping is bookable at most tour desks, however some tour operators will only be looking for 12 pax groups or ‘private’ bookings. This is where things can get confusing for first time visitors. The key word is ‘shared’ group tour unless you happen to be traveling with 11 friends. If you prefer something more relaxing, a Langkawi Day Cruise would be a nice wrap up of your 4 days in Langkawi itinerary. Tropical Charters offers a brilliant half day (6 hours) boat trip through the archipelago that you will not soon forget. Sun, sand and sea is what this relaxing outing is all about. Inclusive of gorgeous scenery, a salt-water Jacuzzi, free flow beverages of choice and a barbecue on a private beach. Tropical Charters also includes transportation to and from your hotel or guest house.

With Island Hopping or the Day Cruise you will be back on shore with plenty of time to do some last-minute Duty Free Shopping and relax before dinner.

The epitome of an island holiday is a picturesque sunset dinner on the waterfront and a great way to end your 4 days in Langkawi. Langkawi also offers plenty of waterfront dining with sunset views. However, not all of these fine eateries serve alcohol as well as non-alcoholic beverages. But fear not as I’ve made a list of those who do offer both options.

*Alternative adventure activity for Day 4: Jungle Trekking

My two cents: *Island Hopping boats come in all shapes and sizes, but they should have an adequate number of life jackets on board at all times. Inquiring about this when booking is a good idea. If the boat you are scheduled to meet up with is not compliant, it is totally up to you regarding your safety. *Please do not join any tour company who is touting ‘Eagle Feeding’. The words feeding and watching often get clumped into one, so just for the record, there are some who throw chicken skin out to entice the wild birds to dive for the food and entertain the guests (aka Eagle Feeding). It is unnecessary and unhealthy for the birds. A little patience will reward you with a more natural version during good old fashioned ‘Eagle Watching’ and it is much more sustainable.

*Being on boats of course increases your chances of dropping something overboard or getting non-waterproof items wet. Having a dry bag or other waterproofing is a good idea. *Wearing proper shoes on a boat will help prevent slipping or falling. Non-skid rubber sole shoes or sandals with straps are highly recommended. *Do be mindful of your trash (as well as cigarette butts) and once again, please don’t feed the monkeys or other wildlife.

But what if it rains!?

As you can see, the Langkawi itinerary choices are rather eclectic. And there are a lot more things to do than I have even mentioned. Seriously. But for first time visitors or those on limited time, my Langkawi itinerary suggestions are based on some of my personal recommendations, while keeping you in ‘general’ areas, each day. Hopefully this will allow you to make the most of your Langkawi experience by sparing you the time-wasting, bouncing back and forth across the island. That of course can seriously eat up your vacation time or have you frantically racing from point A to point B. And we all know that islands are best savored typically on ‘island time’; slow-paced and relaxing.

Keeping a sarong or long sleeve shirt handy can instantly transform you into a culturally sensitive traveler, should you suddenly find yourself in an area where the majority are wearing long pants or dresses. This goes for men and women. It’s a gesture of respect towards older locals, as well as fellow international visitors.

I would love to cycle around Langkawi but how big is the island? Can it be done in a day or in a couple of days? Also is there a story to that Eagle? That is huge!

Yes, you could actually cycle around Langkawi in a day, but that would be without stopping much. The main island is 478+ km², which is bigger than Penang Island. The eagle is actually a Brahminy Kite, which looks a lot like an American Eagle (but much smaller). Langkawi does however have Sea Eagles which look more like HUGE Seagulls. It’s still a mystery to me why they call Eagle Square ‘Eagle Square’ except it rolls of the tongue easier than Brahminy Kite Square.

You had a busy 4 days in Langkawi. But I can see why you think a 7-10 day visit might be better. I like the idea of starting with panoramic views to get an overview. Visiting Seven Wells waterfalls and swimming in the pools sounds perfect. A Malaysia cultural show sounds like a good way to finish a day. And no visit would be complete without spending time at one or more beaches. Or hopping around on an island hop.

I love that you are honest and recommend spending more more time in Langkawi, 7-10 days. But what a great 4 day itinerary if somebody is stretched for time on their first visit. Plus you give alternative activities, brilliant!

The Malaysia Cultural Show with the buffet dinner sounds amazing, and tasty. I would be torn between this and the Sunset Mangrove Tour. Too many choices hahaha.

Skytrex is great. Affordable too. Three levels to choose from and it won’t break the bank. They are super personable there too, so they instill confidence. The only Langkawi Zipline I personally recommend.

Some hotels are erroneously listed on booking sites, so it is best to also look up a particular hotel on a google map and truly see the immediate area. Thanks Jenifer. I mention in the blog the various companies I recommend for certain activities, like mangrove tours and boat cruises. This is an itinerary I put together based on my experience as someone who lives in Langkawi, so yes I’ve had all of these experiences. No one that I know of has a ‘tour’ itinerary like this. I also cram a lot into a short period of time, to hopefully help visitors make the most of their time and spend less time driving from point A to point B.

Hi Chai, that would depend on how you travel. Your hotel choices, your dining choices, etc.. will all add up differently for different people. You could easily book an inexpensive hostel room, eat from the night market and spend your days hanging out on the beach (only)for less than 200RM a day. Most of the tours I recommend are less than 250rm and they often include a meal. My itinerary suggestions put you in the driver’s seat and is not an all inclusive ‘package’ so you can pick and choose what might be of interest to you as well as suit your budget. Hope that helps. :)

Hi SPLim, it depends on your budget and what type of travelers your group is. Off the bat I can recommend Idaman Guest House in Kuala Teriang as it is affordable, cosy and your walkers might really enjoy the quiet location. It is a village and is flat so no climbing etc.. There are plenty of local places to eat near by also. https://www.theislanddrum.com/langkawi-homestays-kampung-stays/ As for an itinerary, what I highlight in this 4-5 day post can be mixed and matched. I would definitely put the cable car day and the drive around the island on your 3 day itinerary. I also think your elderly folks would enjoy that pace. Just eliminate any offshore boating trips, with exception to the mangrove tour (which is not too strenuous) and is very interesting to see all of the mangrove nature. There is a very nice Seafood Restaurant walking distance from the Idaman as well. If you don’t want to rent a car, you can also easily hire a taxi for a day for around RM200. Idaman can help you out with that also. Oh! And you must visit a night market! 7 nights a week at different locations and if you go before sunset you will avoid crowds easier. Hope this helps. :)

Thanks Julie. The Island Drum gets a lot of monthly page views locally as well as internationally and 85% of those folks are ‘new’ traffic. My blog and website is going into it’s 8th year and I think has a larger audience reach potential than a local Facebook group, but thanks for the suggestion. This blog post has also been shared and reshared in various Facebook groups, including my own which is Island Drum of Langkawi. I do agree with you that there are many self-proclaimed ‘experts’ and also more than a few who are out to make a quick buck. That is also one of the reasons I wrote this itinerary for ‘newbies’ and hopefully it will help people get the most out of their first time visit to Langkawi. But also to be honest, anyone who plans their holidays based on information they get from ‘Facebook’ or random ‘Facebook groups’ is practically begging to be scammed by at least one person. There is tons of real information online, people just need to, as you say, do their research. Thank you for the feedback. :)

I am in Langkawi for only 3 nights and 2 days . Unfortunately it happens to be the time that the Sky bridge and cable carts are closed : ( .

Is there anything else you would recommend to do in those two days ?

Thanks Moe. Sorry about the Cable Car, the maintenance schedule a bit weird this year. However, Oriental village is still open even though the cable car is presently closed. But if the cable car ‘view’ is what you are looking for a replacement for, then head to the top of Gunung Raya. It’s actually the tallest mountain in Langkawi (but not the oldest), it’s also free. I recommend driving there (in a car) to save you a lot of time. Hardy slow travelers can hike a massive set of stairs from Lubuk Semilang Recreational Park which is next to Mardi Agro Park. :)

Thank you for this article, my husband and I based our own itinerary around this and we really enjoyed our 4 days in Langkawi! The dance show, aa you mention already, has not yet re-opened which is a real shame- doesn’t seem that there are other restaurants/hotels offering this either. Devs Adventure Tours has also changed their position and now will only schedule a tour if there are min 4 people so we were also unfortunately unable to do the mangrove tour – again a real shame. Highly recommend Mega water sports for the jet ski tour- we had Shahrul as our guide/instructor and he was great. Professional, knowledgeable and we felt very safe in his hands.

Thank you for the updates. Bummer about Dev’s, I’m actually surprised they weren’t happy to take the two of you. As for the other regarding AT (which is not on my suggested itinerary), I hope you put that on Trip Adviser. That’s funny though, I always get the ‘no one else has complained’ bit, because I have had those very words said to me all over Malaysia. I was starting to wonder if indeed I was just a complainer. :D Now I won’t take it so personally. Glad you had an overall great trip though. :)

Hi Eduardo, welcome. My itinerary attempts to offer the best use of a visitor’s limited time, but days 2 thru 4 pretty much cover a 3 day itinerary. One can waste a lot of sightseeing time driving from point A to point B or having lengthy mid-day meals. But ultimately it depends on what your own personal interests are. Some people like to shop, some like to simply walk to the sea and take a selfie and leave. But if someone wants to hit Langkawi highlights in a limited amount of time this blog post covers it. Hope that helps. :)

Where would you recommend staying in langkawi? I would like to be near nightlife and be able to go elsewhere as well.

If your definition of nightlife means live music and a few people roaming the street after 11pm, The most ‘nightlife’ would be found in Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah ‘tourist’ area. You’ll also be able to sign up for tours or hire taxis/GRAB taxis easily. You’ll find food and beverages of choice a plenty in the areas as well. Hotel with a view of the sea would be optimal. Nadias is smack in the middle of Cenang and comes at affordable prices. :) Have fun!

Also known as the Jewel of Kedah, this tropical island is home to lush forest landscapes, powerful waterfalls, pristine beaches and much more. It’s a beautiful island, which is still somewhat of a hidden gem in Southeast Asia.

​We recently spent three days in Langkawi as part of a wider Malaysia trip, and we loved our time on the island.

Three days was just enough time to adventure around the island, enjoying the beautiful nature, outdoors adventures and beaches.

Langkawi 3-day itinerary

And now it’s time to dive into the details of my Langkawi 3-day itinerary! This is pretty much the exact itinerary we followed for our three days in Langkawi.

Day 1  in Langkawi

Visit oriental village.

If you plan to visit the famous Sky Cab, then the first step on your itinerary for Langkawi is the Oriental Village (it’s on the way). It’s situated at the foot of the Mat Cincang Mountain Range.

This open-air themed shopping area is designed to be a modern showcase of Malaysian, Southeast and East Asian architecture.  

With a lake at its centre, you can stroll around the park, stopping off at souvenir stalls and snapping pics of exhibits and architecture along the way.

There’s the Animal Farm and Art in Paradise Museum, as well as a few places to grab a snack or a drink before you head up in the SkyCab cable car.

To be entirely honest, before visiting Langkawi I saw Oriental Village recommended on lots of travel blogs, but I didn’t personally find it that interesting.

There’s not much to it, and I wouldn’t plan a trip specifically just to see it, but as you have to walk through it to reach the Langkawi Cable Car and Langkawi SkyBridge, you might as well check it out.

Go on a ride on the Sky Cab

In order to get to the Sky Bridge, you’ll have to take the Sky Cab. This super steep cable car with epic views spans 900 metres in total, taking visitors up into the mountains.

There are two stations along the way. The top station is right at the peak of the mountain, which itself is the second-highest on the island, and from where you will reach Sky Bridge.

The first station is called Angle Station, because the gondolas have to pivot 45 degrees to reach the top stop from here. Here you get beautiful views over Langkawi and the sea.

When I was there (November 2024) they were building an “Eagle’s Nest” viewpoint, but it wasn’t yet ready. Make sure to get off the gondola at this first station, as there are really cool views you don’t get from the other station.

The stretch between the middle and top stations is 42 degrees, making it one of the steepest cable car gradients in the world.

Go on a walk on Sky Bridge

Any Langkawi itinerary, 3 days or otherwise, would not be complete without a trip to the Sky Bridge, one of the most famous sights in Langkawi.

Set 660 metres above sea level atop Mat Cincang mountain, this walkway takes visitors out across the mountain tops, weaving between the peaks and above the lush rainforest below.

The views are really cool, and it makes for some pretty amazing photos. It’s open every day from 9:30AM to 7PM and costs RM 6 to enter. However, it’s worth noting that while the entrance fee for Sky Bridge is cheap, the gondola isn’t.

And since you have to take the gondola up to the Sky Bridge (there is no other route, no road to drive or trail to hike), it can add up. Prices range from RM 50 to RM 135 depending on the type of gondola you select (private, glass bottom etc).

You can save a bit of money and skip the queues by booking your entrance fees online beforehand here . You can also opt for a private guided tour that will take you to both Sky Cab and Sky Bridge.

Go for a swim in Seven Wells Waterfall (Telaga Tujuh Waterfall)

With its mountains and rainforests, Langkawi isn’t just a resort island, but a place of surprising natural beauty as well.

You can even find a few waterfalls here, like the famous Seven Wells Waterfall , 1.5 kilometres (a 4-minute drive) from Oriental Village.

From the parking area you have to walk a solid 20 minutes (or more, depending on your pace) up a staircase to reach the waterfall. We didn’t find it too challenging, but just bear in mind there are over 300 steps.

There are two sections to the waterfall. From the upper one you get some really cool views, there’s also a glass bottom bridge where you can snap pictures, and there are some hiking trails around here too.  

The waterfall itself isn’t very powerful here, it’s more of a river flowing through small rock pools (hence the name Seven Wells) that you can swim in.

The lower one doesn’t have a view, as it’s set inside the forest, but this is where the waterfall actually falls, and it’s bigger and more powerful. Surrounded by tall trees, here you’ll also find pools that you can swim in.

It’s a gorgeous place to spend a few hours, cool down in the fresh waterfall pools, and enjoy the beautiful nature surrounding you.

Visit Temurun waterfall

Jump back in your rental car (or hail a Grab) and drive around 20 minutes to reach the next stop on your Langkawi itinerary: Temurun Waterfall.

It may not be as impressive as Seven Wells, but this three-tiered cascade is still a cool waterfall nonetheless. You can go swimming here too, and soak up the lush scenery.

One bonus is that it’s much closer to the road than Seven Wells Waterfalls, and there’s not as much walking through the forest or up steps to get to it (max 5-10 minutes walk).

If you didn’t swim in the waterfall, you can stop off at a beach nearby – Sandy Skulls Beach, for example, is just a few minutes along the coast to the east.

See the sunset & spend the evening in Pantai Cenang

Finish up your first day in Langkawi with a 30-minute drive across the island to the popular Pantai Cenang Beach.

It’s famous for its water sports (like jet ski, banana boats, and paragliding), but it’s also home to a good selection of nice bars and restaurants that edge the beach.  

It’s a good spot to unwind into the evening, have a drink to view the sunset, and watch the fire performers kicking off on the beach when it gets dark.

For a chilled-out bar, head to the southern end of the beach to Yellow Beach Cafe. The food is decent (try the pizza), the drinks are cheap and the sunsets from here are perfect.

There’s also the more rustic Kalut Cafe and Bar, which provides a good vista for watching the fire dancers. We visited Langkawi quite far into our Malaysia itinerary, after Georgetown , Ipoh , Cameron Highlands and Kuala Lumpur.

As such, we were a bit tired of Malaysian food and wanted something different, so we ate at Yasmin Syrian Restaurant. I had some of the most delicious hummus and falafel ever!

Day 2 in Langkawi

Go for a mangrove forest boat tour.

Langkawi is fringed not only by sandy beaches, but is also dotted with mangroves. These coastal forests are super important for the environment, and exploring them allows you to see a totally different habitat than beaches or cliffs.

So the second day on your itinerary for Langkawi should start with a mangrove tour. You can either opt to join a group tour , or book yourself a private mangrove boat tour .

We opted for a private tour, as there was six of us so splitting the cost of a private boat amongst us was pretty affordable. Plus, we booked last minute once we arrived in Langkawi, which is always cheaper.

You can get better deals if you book on the spot, but if you’re travelling in high season and want to ensure you have your boat tour confirmed, it’s better to do so online beforehand .

They also do kayak tours in the mangroves , which go through much smaller canals and get much closer to the mangroves than you can with a boat. However given the heat, we preferred to do a classic boat tour.

Lasting around 3 to 4 hours, most tours will take you directly from your accommodation to the jetty where a boat will be waiting to take you up the Kilim River.

As well as passing under the hanging branches and aerial roots of the mangroves, during the cruise you’ll get to do some other cool things.

The exact itinerary will depend on the day (for example in our case, our captain decided to start with snorkelling to avoid the wind that picks up later in the day), but generally speaking most tours all include the same stops.

We started our trip going out of the mangroves to see interesting limestone rock formations rising out of the ocean. This is where we then stopped for snorkelling, but I have to admit I didn’t love it, as the visibility wasn’t great.

After that we went back to cruising through the mangroves to spot the famous Langkawi sea eagles. It was so cool to see them swooping down and hunting for food.

It’s worth noting that some tours will throw food in the water to attract the eagles. This isn’t something you should participate in, so make sure to check beforehand if your tour will do this.

We then visited the unique Bat Cave, cruised through the mangroves, saw monkeys up close, and finished our tour at a fish farm, where we had delicious fresh fish for lunch at their floating restaurant.

Relax at Tanjung Rhu Beach

After your busy morning exploring, it’s time to spend your afternoon chilling on the beach. Tanjung Rhu Beach lies on a sleepier portion of the coastline, with fewer tourists and less development than Pantai Cenang.  

It’s right across the road from the harbour where the mangrove boat tours set off from, so it’s the perfect place to chill after a long morning out exploring.

There’s shallow water here, attractive views, and the beach is backed by jungle and mangroves. There are a few kiosks where you can grab a snack or a drink, but otherwise it’s a cool beach to just chill and explore for a couple of hours.

Go to a night market

Every evening there is a night market in a different part of the island. We went to the one one in Kuah Town (Wednesdays and Saturdays), and found it to be a cool place to try local street food and buy some souvenirs.

It’s about half an hour away by car from Tanjung Rhu Beach.  

On Monday head to Ulu Melaka for the night market; Tuesdays is Kedawang; Thursdays is Bohor Temoyong; Fridays the night market is held at Ayer Hangat and Sundays is Padang Matsirat.  

All in all, you’ll find things to buy, things to eat and drink, and a lively atmosphere to lap up. Typically the night markets start up around 5PM and go on till late.

Day 3 in Langkawi

Join a jet ski tour.

The last day on your Langkawi Trip itinerary begins with a super fun jet ski tour .

Langkawi is an archipelago, after all, so it’s a good opportunity not just to race around on a jet ski, but to explore the other islets that are dotted around this part of Malaysia.  

Your instructor will teach you how to ride a jet ski if you’ve never ridden one before. After this, you’ll head off on a 4-hour adventure.

One of the highlights include stopping off at an island that has a thriving monkey population. Here you’ll also find the largest freshwater lake in Malaysia (and you can swim in it too, which is cool).

Overall, it’s great value for money and the guide that leads the tour helps you to get a good understanding of the islands of Langkawi.

There’s no other way you’d be getting to these islands anyway, so if you like exploring, a jet ski tour in Langkawi is a must.

Free afternoon around Langkawi

Now that you’ve ticked off the main highlights on this Langkawi 3 days, 2 nights itinerary, what you do on your last afternoon and evening is up to you.

There’s still plenty to see, of course, but not what would be considered “must-see” stops.

If you’ve got a hire car, you can drive up into the Gunung Raya mountain range. The twisting, curving roads here make for a fun drive and the views are pretty cool as well.  

You could also stop by the enormous Dataran Lang statue, a huge eagle that is the symbol of the island. Langkawi, according to one theory, means “island of the reddish-brown eagle”.

The statue itself is in a colourful square, and you can get some pretty good views of the mountains and coastline beyond.

Or if you like your trip a little more adventurous, you could pay a visit to Skytrex Adventure Langkawi (open 9AM to 5:30PM, ticket prices start at RM 79).

This place is all about ziplines and high ropes courses, letting you run riot through the tropical treetops (there are three courses: beginner, intermediate and advanced).  

Or there’s Splash Out, a water park that’s great if you’re travelling with children. It’s open from 11AM to 7PM (admission from RM 65).

It’s clean and well maintained, plus there’s plenty of activities here, plus a bunch of eateries in case you need to refuel after all the splashing around. You can also end your trip with a sunset dinner cruise.

We didn’t do one since we weren’t visiting during dry season, the weather was quite unpredictable, and we were concerned we wouldn’t see much. But doing a sunset cruise is considered a must on many Langkawi itineraries.

Useful things to know for your Langkawi itinerary

We’ve looked at my day-by-day Langkawi 3 day itinerary, but here are some useful things you need to know about spending three days in Langkawi.

About Langkawi

Known as the Jewel of Kedah, Langkawi is actually not just one island but an archipelago of over 100 islands in the Strait of Malacca. Most famously, Langkawi is a resort island with beaches, hotels and duty-free shopping.  

But there’s more to it than that. Here across the island’s 478.5 square kilometres, you’ll also find rainforests, mangroves, and delicious food to sample.

With 3 days in Langkawi, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to experience the island’s nature, swim in the sea, and lean into the island’s slower pace of life.

There are also plenty of places to stay, from budget backpacker digs to polished 5-star resort hotels – and everything in between.

How to get to Langkawi

Before you organise an itinerary to see Langkawi in 3 days, you’ll need to work out how to get there. The most common routes are catching the ferry from Georgetown and from Koh Lipe, Thailand.  

The ferry from Georgetown costs RM 60 (one way) or RM 120 (return). Ferries from Georgetown leave twice a day, and the journey takes between 2.5 and 3 hours.

Langkawi is around 42 kilometres from Koh Lipe. The ferries leave three times a day from here and cost 1,100 THB (one way) or 2,200 THB (return), with the journey taking around 90 minutes.

Langkawi also has its own international airport, with direct flights from cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Singapore .

You can even fly from Georgetown’s own Penang International Airport, with flights from here to Langkawi International Airport only taking around 35 minutes.

How to get around Langkawi

Langkawi does have public transport, but it’s not very well connected if you want to see as much as possible. And yes, you can get Grabs to get around, but for the most freedom, I would really recommend renting a car.  

Renting a car in Langkawi is affordable, with a whole host of different places where you can rent a car – and different car types to choose from.

Driving in Langkawi is safe, with never too much traffic, and having your own set of wheels means driving along jungle roads and stopping off at quieter beaches.  

If you’ve got 3 days in Langkawi, having your own set of wheels will pay for itself.

How many days should you spend in Langkawi?

Realistically, you don’t need much time in Langkawi. I would say that having 3 days would be the absolute minimum to see the main attractions of the island.

You could spend longer here, since even without the sights, Langkawi is a resort island with plenty of beaches.

However, I didn’t personally think the beaches were as amazing as those in Thailand (for that, head over to Koh Lipe ), but it’s still a fun place to hang out for a few days.  

From Langkawi you can actually get to Koh Lipe really easily, as it’s just a 1.5 hour ferry journey away.

If you want a mix of nature and beach adventures, I would do outdoorsy activities in Langkawi, and then hop over to Koh Lipe for beach chilling.

What to pack for three days in Langkawi

You don’t need much beyond the usual travel essentials, but here are some things you’ll be glad to have on you.

Waterproof jacket – If you visit in rainy season, you’ll be glad to have one of these!

Fast drying towel – There’s a lot of swimming and lounging on beaches involved in Langkawi, so make sure to have one of these! I love these because they dry quickly and they don’t take up much space.

Power bank – You don’t want your phone to die on you just as you’re about to snap a gorgeous photo of the mangroves of Langkawi!

Dry bag – To keep your valuables safe and dry from any rogue water splashes during your boat trips.

Final thoughts on my 3 days Langkawi itinerary

​There is no doubt that Langkawi is one of the best places to visit in Malaysia. It’s the perfect choice if you’re looking for panoramic views, white-sand beaches, limestone cliffs, friendly locals, lush green vegetation and tasty local food.

It might not be as rich in cultural sights as other places in Malaysia, like Kuala Lumpur with Batu Caves and Thean Hou Temple , but I personally found the nature in Langkawi simply stunning.

From Langkawi you can also easily hop over to Koh Lipe and the Thai islands. The main island of the Langkawi Archipelago was one of my favourite stops of our Malaysia itinerary.

LANGKAWI, MALAYSIA: Budget Travel Guide

Comprising 99 islands, Langkawi lies in Andaman Sea, off the coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Its main island, Pulau Langkawi, takes its name from the reddish brown eagle that has also become the symbol of the island. The archipelago is known for its natural resources. It may be small but it is packed with all kinds of natural wonders — glorious waterfalls, white beaches, mangrove forests, brackish rivers, limestone cliffs, and diverse wildlife.

While Langkawi’s popularity as a honeymoon and backpacking destination in Malaysia skyrockets, it remains unheard of to most Filipinos. During my visit, the manager of the hotel where I stayed shared that there were not many Pinoy tourists who grace the island with their presence. In fact, he added, we were the first Filipinos to check in at his resort that year and it was the middle of July already.

If you’re planning to set foot on Langkawi, here are some things you might need to know.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

How to Get to Langkawi

There are no direct flights to Langkawi from Manila, which means you will have to connect somewhere and I bet it’s going to be Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. From KL, you have three options:

• By air . You can fly to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur. AirAsia flies to Langkawi 8 times a day. Fare is around RM120 (PHP 1625). It’s fast and there’s no need to take a ferry. Just make sure you have enough allowance when booking a connecting flight.
• By bus . There are several bus companies operating to Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah, which serve as jump off points to Langkawi. Make your way to Puduraya Bus Terminal or Duta Bus Terminal and get a ticket. Fare ranges from RM 30-RM 40.
• By train . Take the sleeper overnight train to Kuala Perlis! At KL Sentral, book a second-class berth (as low as RM34) onboard the Senandung Langkawi Train to Arau Station, third to the last stop. The train’s final destination is Hat Yai, Thailand so make sure you wake up early the next morning or else you’ll find yourself in Thailand. The train leaves KL at 9:20pm and arrives at Arau Station at 8am. From here, take a cab to Kuala Perlis and hop onto a Langkawi-bound ferry (RM18).

Of the three, I like the train option the most and for many reasons. First, you can save a room night; meaning you won’t need to check in at a hotel that night because you’ll be spending the night on the train. Second, it is almost as cheap as the bust but it’s more comfortable because you get to have a bed and you can move around inside the train. Lastly, you get a good view of the Malaysian countryside in the morning.

Most hotels, hostels, and resorts in Langkawi are clustered along Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah. You might want to just pick accommodations here because this means you’ll be staying near major establishments including the island’s top restaurants, stores, and attractions. The beach is wide and fine, and the sunset is nothing short of breathtaking.

Hotel aggregators are good places to start looking. For hotels and resorts, you might want to check out Traveloka. I have tried only one hotel here — Langkawi Tropical Resort .

Places to Visit in Langkawi

Here are some of the most popular tourist spots in Langkawi that you might want to check out. The photos will take you to a detailed description of the place sprinkled with some of my personal experiences.

Where to Eat in Langkawi

Seafood is the island specialty. (Duh?) Our little yummy friends from the bottom of the sea are relatively cheap here. The road parallel to Pantai Cenang is bordered by lanes of restaurants offering plates of scrumptious seafood delights. And because Langkawi is in the northwestern tip of the country, the Thai influence leaking southward is evident in the cuisine. Here are some dishes you might want to sample:

Getting Around Langkawi

There are many ways to get around the island. In other destinations, the bus is the obvious choice but I don’t think it holds true for Langkawi. Some of the points of interest are not along the bus route. But here are more ways:

• By bicycle. From RM12 per day. Great way to see the island but it can be a little bit too tiring especially around the hilly parts.
• By motorcycle. From RM40 per day. You need to pay for the gasoline, though.
• By taxi. Cabs in Langkawi use the fixed rate system and not the meter. Short distances can cost up to RM15 and longer distances RM25.

You can also strike a deal with a cab driver to take you on a tour around the island and wait for you at each stop. It is usually at RM100 for 4 hours and additional RM25 per succeeding hour. That’s what we did and we were able to visit the destinations listed above within 6 hours. And because we were a party of 2, we divided the cost.

That’s about it! I’ll try to add more information to this post each time I set foot on the rising star destination of West Malaysia.

The tickets for the sleeper train can be booked on the spot or you have to book it beforehand?

Hello! does Malaysia require an IDP (International Driving Permit) for tourist who will be touring using a motorbike? I’ve read somewhere that countries that are part of the ASEAN does not require an IDP.

The Cameron Highlands in a Nutshell

While beach resorts abound, there are still a few brilliant beach shack bars left on Langkawi’s shores, many of which are on the sands of Pantai Cenang.

Kalut Cafe And Bar is a great casual place to relax. Here you can enjoy the sunset from beanbags directly on the beach. As the evening progresses, this is a great place to go dancing. If you're lucky, you may catch the bar's reoccurring live fire show. 

Board a boat at Kilim Jetty to tour the waterways of Kilim Karst Geoforest Park. You’ll have a good chance of spotting pythons between the twisted roots of mangroves and bonnet macaques feeding.

Keep your mouth closed when you pause to view the awesome sight of bat colonies hanging in caves within limestone formed 550 million years ago – who knows what might drop from above!

The island also provides habitat for more than 200 bird species. In the island’s foliage you’re likely to spot oriental pied hornbills, easily identifiable thanks to their bulbous beaks. Females have blue eyes and the males’ are red.

You’ll need well-attuned ears to identify the call of greater racket-tailed drongos, which have a quiff-like crest and distinctive twin tail feathers. Impressively, the drongos are able to mimic as many as 26 calls by other birds and animals, including the whooping and shrieking of monkeys.

Pack your boots and hike, to the sounds of squealing cicadas and chirping birds, in dense rainforest on the slopes of Gunung Raya and Gunung Machincang, Langkawi’s highest mountains. Companies like Dev’s Adventure Tours and Junglewalla offer guided tours providing insights into nature and wildlife.

Alternatively, follow marked trails at your own pace. Locals rate the trail to the Telaga Tujuh waterfalls, whose seven pools are associated with legends featuring fairies.

If you’re a water baby, then you’ll love Langkawi. Ocean temperatures fluctuate between 28–30°C (82–86°F), making swimming in the sea inviting and pleasant. Be warned though: jellyfish can be a problem. The creatures, known locally as obor obor , lay their eggs by the shore on evenings. Several resorts protect guests with anti-jellyfish nets. Wearing a rashie or T-shirt helps minimise your exposure to stings.

Cable cars are usually associated with winter holidays but riding the Langkawi Skycab lifts you above the dense canopy of the virgin rainforest decking Gunung Machincang. The peak of the steep-sided mountain stands 708m above sea level, where viewing platforms prove popular spots for enjoying panoramas of the island. On clear days you can see the coastline of southern Thailand beyond the glimmering Andaman Sea.

If you have a head for heights, ascend to the Top Station in one of the glass-bottomed gondolas, peering over the ancient jungle’s treetops on the way. The 15-minute ride carries you 2.2 kilometres.

At the top you can cross the 125-metre long Sky Bridge. The world’s longest free span, curved bridge dangles above a chasm from a single metal pylon. Blend in by snapping selfies on the vantage point that doubles as one of Langkawi’s best-known landmarks.

Whether you’re strapped for cash or want to splash out, there’s somewhere for you on the island of Langkawi.

Many of the beachfront resorts are aimed at the higher end of the market – many making a perfect romantic getaway for couples in love. If stepping down from a chalet onto a white-sand beach to spend a morning dozing in a gently swaying hammock sounds up your street, splurge on the Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort and Spa at Pantai Cenang.

For those who looking for five-star accommodations, Casa del Mar Langkawi features rooms with beach views, an outdoor swimming pool and free bikes to discover the island with.

If you want to roll out your towel and while away time on Langkawi’s sandy beaches, head to popular Pantai Cenang, on the south-west coast, or for ultimate relaxation, head north to the quieter Tanjung Rhu.

If lying on the sand taxes your patience try a jet ski tour or sunset boat cruise in waters around the island. They don’t cost the earth and are a great way to see Langkawi’s pretty shoreline.
