Northwestern quarterback transfer Brendan Sullivan schedules visit with Iowa football

northwestern college tour

IOWA CITY — Northwestern quarterback transfer Brendan Sullivan is scheduled to visit Iowa this week, his father Mike confirmed to the Register.

Sullivan and his father are scheduled to arrive in Iowa on Tuesday.

Sullivan has appeared in 13 games over the last two seasons for Northwestern. During that span, Sullivan went 134-of-195 passing for 1,303 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. Sullivan also rushed for three touchdowns.

Last season, Sullivan had a stint filling in for injured quarterback Ben Bryant. Sullivan played against Iowa last season in the game at Wrigley Field, passing for 81 yards against the Hawkeyes’ elite defense.

The best performance of Sullivan’s 2023 season came against Maryland. In that game, Sullivan threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns. He finished last season with a 63.6 completion percentage and 714 yards passing.

Iowa’s quarterbacks room is in dire need of reinforcement.

The Hawkeyes’ quarterback play was a disaster last season and it isn't set up to be in a much better position heading into the 2024 campaign. Joe Labas, Deacon Hill and walk-on Tommy Poholsky all entered the transfer portal.

As it stands now, Iowa is set to have just three quarterbacks on the roster in 2024. Cade McNamara has suffered back-to-back season-ending injuries and was limited this spring while getting fully healthy from his latest injury. Redshirt freshman Marco Lainez, who has attempted just seven passes in college, is still young and developing. James Resar is a signee in 2024 class but has not joined the team yet.

Iowa’s repeated offensive failures have led to a substantial amount of change on that side of the ball leading up to the 2024 season. Iowa hired ex-Western Michigan coach Tim Lester as offensive coordinator, taking over for Brian Ferentz. The program also moved on from wide receivers coach Kelton Copeland, internally promoting Jon Budmayr for that position.

Still, Iowa’s quarterbacks room looks shaky. The Hawkeyes are in need of some much-needed depth and talent.

Iowa Hawkeyes may be on verge of landing former Big Ten West starting QB

T he Iowa Hawkeyes are hosting former Northwestern starting quarterback Brendan Sullivan on a visit this week, according to 247Sports' Sean Bock.

Sullivan entered the transfer portal on April 24 after three years with the Wildcats. He was the team's starter for a chunk of the 2023 season, completing 63.6% of his passes for 714 yards, 6 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He was projected to be the program's full-time starter in 2024.

Related: Post-spring Big Ten football 2024 power rankings

Iowa, meanwhile, recently saw backup quarterback Deacon Hill enter the transfer portal. Former Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara is projected to start for the program after missing much of the 2023 season with a leg injury, but the position group lacks meaningful depth.

Sullivan could push McNamara for the job, especially if the veteran isn't 100%. The former Wildcat also has two years of eligibility remaining, so he would line up to start the following seasons.

https://twitter.com/SBock247/status/1787612085179838465

Iowa is at a crossroads after firing offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz after the 2023 season. The program is still built on terrific defense and an old-school approach. But it will need to create some form of offense moving forward if it is to compete in the new Big Ten landscape.

The addition of Sullivan would be big news for the Hawkeyes as they work to avoid having to start Big Ten games with Hill or Spencer Petras under center.

Wisconsin visits Iowa on November 2 this season. The game won't have the same Big Ten West-related stakes, but it will serve as a valuable measuring stick as the conference moves into its new era.

Northwestern student wins second place in national theatre competition

Thursday, May 2, 2024

Jack MacGregor's award-winning set design

MacGregor was honored for his work on Northwestern’s production of “Silent Sky,” a drama based on the true story of Henrietta Leavitt, an astronomer who made a groundbreaking discovery in the early 1900s while dealing with the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated field.

Jack MacGregor

“Jack has a remarkable ability to collaborate with other designers,” says Dr. Robert Hubbard , professor of theatre at Northwestern. “He does his own research that integrates seamlessly into the ensemble. In ‘Silent Sky,’ Jack created an environment where the lighting designer could visualize the night sky. The combination was breathtaking.”

“Silent Sky” was produced in the spring of 2023, when MacGregor was a sophomore at NWC. As the scenic designer for the show, he was asked by the director to give the audience the sense that they were sitting under a night sky.

“The show was going to be in the round, so I decided to make the set a planetarium,” MacGregor says. Because quick scene changes and visibility were important, he designed desks, tables and other furniture to be small, lightweight or on wheels.

“Since the play revolves around astronomical discoveries in the 1900s, I decided to paint the floor and set pieces reflective of 1900s astronomical art,” MacGregor says. “Overall, the show turned out beautifully. I loved the design process, seeing it come to fruition, and experiencing how it helped tell the story of ‘Silent Sky.’”

The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center is one of the most prestigious new play development workshops in existence. This summer, MacGregor will be working alongside some of the most respected and admired theatre makers in the world.

Regarded as one of the best Christian college theatre programs in the country, Northwestern’s theatre department features a collaborative, excellence-oriented environment committed to helping students develop their creative gifts for service in God’s kingdom. Study with Northwestern’s award-winning faculty in the outstanding facilities of DeWitt Theatre Arts Center.

Mercouri Kanatzidis and Aaron Naber elected to National Academy of Sciences

northwestern college tour

Posted By: Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences May 6, 2024

Chemist Mercouri Kanatzidis and mathematician Aaron Naber, faculty members in Northwestern University’s  Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences , have been elected to the prestigious  National Academy of Sciences .

Membership in the academy is one of the highest honors given to a scientist in the United States. Kanatzidis and Naber are among  120 new members and 24 international members  elected in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

New members will be inducted at the academy’s annual meeting next year.

Mercouri Kanatzidis

Kanatzidis is the Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Chemistry in Weinberg College and a senior scientist at Argonne National Laboratory.

An inorganic chemist, he has been active in the field of materials design and discovery for more than 30 years. Kanatzidis has made ground-breaking advances in synthesis and made discoveries of materials that have been instrumental in advancing alternative energy technologies. His work has focused on improving thermoelectric materials for waste heat recovery, which can help to reduce energy waste and lower carbon emissions.

Kanatzidis pioneered and reported the first solar cell utilizing a solid film of an iodide perovskite, which helped ignite a global surge in research endeavors. This and other seminal contributions catalyzed extensive research efforts, resulting in solar cells now attaining remarkable conversion efficiencies surpassing 33%.

Kanatzidis is a highly cited researcher in chemistry, physics and materials science, with more than 1,550 published manuscripts and more than 45 patents to his name. He also has mentored over 95 Ph.D. students and nearly 130 postdoctoral fellows, helping to shape the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Aaron Naber

Naber is the Kenneth F. Burgess Professor of Mathematics in Weinberg.

He is a geometric analyst working on the regularity, singularity and topology of geometrically motivated equations. Naber’s well-known works, together with collaborators, include the proof of the codimension four conjecture for Einstein manifolds, a disproof of the Milnor conjecture and a proof of the energy identity conjecture. Together with collaborators, he has built a structure theory for the singular sets of various nonlinear equations, including nonlinear harmonic maps and spaces with lower Ricci curvature bounds.

Naber won the Fermat Prize in mathematics earlier this year, and in 2023 he was named a Simons Investigator in Mathematics. He was awarded the 2018 New Horizons Prize in Mathematics by the Breakthrough Foundation and named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2017. Naber was named an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow in 2014 and gave an invited talk at the International Congress of Mathematicians.

Before joining Northwestern as an associate professor in 2013, Naber held the positions of Moore Instructor and assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Students and residents camp outside Northwestern University during a pro-Palestinian protest, expressing solidarity with Palestinians with banners in Evanston, Illinois, United States on April 27, 2024.

Seven Jewish members of Northwestern University’s antisemitism advisory committee who stepped down from the body on Wednesday blasted university President Michael Schill for his failure to combat antisemitism while at the same time quickly acceding to the demands of anti-Israel protesters on campus.

Announced in November, the committee’s members were named in January. The body has not yet put forth any public recommendations, nor has Schill adopted any policies from the committee. The seven members who resigned criticized Schill for the agreement he reached on Monday with the anti-Israel protesters who had built an encampment on campus and for not consulting members of the antisemitism committee during the negotiations.

“It appears as though breaking the rules gets you somewhere, and trying to do things respectfully and by the books does not,” Lily Cohen, a Northwestern senior who stepped down from the President’s Advisory Committee on Preventing Antisemitism and Hate on Wednesday, told Jewish Insider . “I am hoping that this is really the last straw that President Schill needs to see in order to really do something. But I can’t say that I have a whole lot of confidence that he will, because it feels like it feels like if he wanted to do something, he’s been given plenty of opportunities to do it.”

The university is “disappointed” that some members of the committee chose to step down, Hilary Hurd Anyaso, Northwestern’s assistant vice president for communications, told JI in a statement. “Our commitment to protecting Jewish students, faculty and staff is unwavering. The University has no tolerance for antisemitic or anti-Muslim behavior.”

The home page of Northwestern’s main website still features a banner declaring “Combating Antisemitism,” with a link to the announcement of the task force members. But the committee members who resigned said university leaders never took its charge seriously.

“Students at Northwestern must be able to walk through campus without hearing hate-filled speech or experiencing harassment for their religious or political identities and commitments,” Northwestern Hillel Executive Director Michael Simon said in an email to the campus Jewish community announcing his resignation from the committee. “I accepted my appointment to the Committee last fall with the expectation that we would make a good-faith effort toward achieving these goals. Over time, it has become apparent that the Committee is not able to do so.”

Dr. Philip Greenland, a professor of cardiology at Northwestern’s medical school and an Orthodox Jew, turned on his phone on Tuesday evening after Passover ended and saw more than 400 unread emails in his inbox and a message from Efraim Benmelech, the committee’s co-chair, asking to meet at 9:15 p.m.

“After the discussion, the seven people who had joined together on this call agreed that they would each independently resign from the committee,” said Greenland, who chose to step down after learning how Schill had disregarded the antisemitism committee when he negotiated with the protestors — particularly because antisemitism had been so apparent among the protesters, which Schill acknowledged in a Tuesday video.

“My rationale was, ‘You asked us to be on this committee. We’ve been investing our time in this committee. It seems to have a purpose that you say exists. And then at the critical moment, you decide you don’t need us. You don’t need to talk to us. You go off on your own, and you make your own decision,’” said Greenland. “He might have minimized physical confrontation with the protesters, but he didn’t make the campus safer, in my opinion, for Jewish students.”

Some Jewish students who walked past the encampment were told that Zionists were not welcome there, said Cohen. A flier with a picture of Schill, who is Jewish, with horns appeared at the encampment, along with a poster showing a star of David crossed out with an X. The antisemitism committee attempted to write a statement condemning the antisemitism exhibited at the encampment but was unable to agree on what to say.

“If the committee that was created to prevent antisemitism cannot even decide on whether or not to speak up about antisemitism, I have no faith in its ability to protect Jewish students or to take any substantive action to change the environment for Jewish students on campus,” Cohen added.

When Schill named members to the antisemitism committee in January, he also announced that its scope would be broader than just antisemitism and would also encompass “other forms of hate including Islamophobia.” That approach raised eyebrows among some Jewish Northwestern affiliates. “If you really want to fix the problem, why conflate it with other issues that are going to prolong trying to find a solution to it?” Mike Teplitsky, a Northwestern alum and the president of the Coalition Against Antisemitism at Northwestern, told JI in March .

“There were definitely Jewish students, alumni, parents, etc., when the committee was announced who immediately wrote it off, said it’s too little, too late, it’s performative, whatever. And I was very adamant that we have to give it a chance and see,” said Cohen. “I felt like maybe it was, really, a good faith effort to take a step in the right direction. So I waited and I saw, and I think the committee ended up proving the skeptics at the beginning right.”

The other committee members who stepped down were Efraim Benmelech, one of the committee’s two co-chairs and a professor at Northwestern’s Kellogg business school; University trustee Paula Pretlow; Martin Eichenbaum, an economics professor; and Daniel Greene, a history professor.

Three Northwestern students sued the university on Wednesday, alleging that it had committed a “breach of contract” by not shutting down the encampment sooner, contrary to campus policies, and by letting a hateful environment flourish among the protestors.

Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL), who is a Northwestern graduate and represents the Chicago suburbs, told JI the deal that Northwestern struck with members of the encampment was “reprehensible” and “unfortunate.” Schneider said he had discussed his concerns about the deal with Schill directly.

Schneider said he was told that Northwestern would not cut business ties with Israeli businesses, but the school’s public statement doesn’t reflect that. “The president hasn’t clearly articulated the principles under which Northwestern is operating,” Schneider said. “You need to be very clear and he has so far remained silent. I hope that changes.”

The Illinois congressman said he’s fully supportive of the idea, which came as part of the deal, of creating a Muslim house or other space on campus, adding that he’d happily write a check to support such a center. But Schneider objected to the decision to call this Muslim-centric space the Middle East North Africa (MENA) House. Such a name excludes all of the other religious groups that have lived in the region for thousands of years, Schneider said, and “effectively validate[s] this false premise, dangerous premise of the anti-Israel protesters that Jews are settler colonialists who have no right to be in this region and Israel has no right to exist.”
