River City Food Tours

What a great way to experience part of the RVA! Our tour guide, Camille Bird, was fantastic. Food was great. Drinks were great. If you're looking for a fun way to spend your afternoon in Richmond, VA this should be on the list!

Thanks for the kind words! I'm very happy to hear the rain didn't get your group down, and you all enjoyed the Savory Stroll event. I look forward to hosting you on one of our regular tours sometime soon!

This was a great way to explore Carytown. We got to check out six local restaurants, each with its own unique personality and flavor. There is something for everyone and the restaurants were very accommodating of dietary restrictions. Just let them know of any restrictions in advance. We spent the weekend and went back to several of the stops on the tour for a full meal. I am already making recommendations to friends.

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed the tour enough to head back to not one, but multiple, of our stops during your weekend in Richmond! I hope the rest of your stay was just as good!

Great experience! The tour guide is very knowledgeable about Carytown, he identify key historic site along our stops to different restaurants. The restaurants itself was amazing and provided wonderful service. This is great couple date for a Saturday afternoon or rolling solo to try different foods and have great conversation with people in the tour.

Thanks for the kind words! I was really glad you were able to make it out for a tour at the last minute. We don't always have space still available, but the Easter weekend kept our numbers low so we could get you in. I hope you continue to enjoy your exploration of Richmond and central Virginia, and when we add a second tour offering, I'll be sure to let you know!

This tour was a perfect activity for a Saturday afternoon! Loved learning more about Richmond, Carytown, and each of the restaurants/shops we visited. I highly recommend checking out River City Food Tours. Our guide Brian did a great job showing us the area!

Thanks for the kind words, they are much appreciated, and I'm glad you learned so much during your tour!

Perfect afternoon for out-of-town guests. The food was great and Brian was friendly and knowledgeable.

Perfect for your visiting aunts, visiting cousins, visiting parents, and everyone else! I'm so glad you trusted us with your guests, and that you all enjoyed yourself!

My husband and I went on the Carytown food tour Saturday afternoon, it was a great way to spend an afternoon. Being relatively new to the Richmond area the whole experience was fantastic. We enjoyed the food at every restaurant and will definitely be going back to all of them. The group was a great mix of interesting people. Brain was very informative a very good tour guide we loved all the history we learn about Carytown and about each restaurant . A fun afternoon. I definitely recommend taking the tour.

I'm so glad you had a good time on your tour, and that you enjoyed each stop enough to consider going back! I hope to see you on another tour in the future!

5 Questions with Brian Beard of River City Food Tours in Richmond, Virginia

Circle-Headshot

1. What foods is your city known for?

Richmond has become a mecca for modern southern food. Nationally- and locally-recognized chefs are cooking up southern-inspired dishes in restaurants such as The Roosevelt, Pasture, Comfort, Saison, Heritage, & Southbound. To name a few :)

Icon-Blue-Transparent-Logo

Richmond is also perfectly located to capitalize on the farm-to-table movement. The city is within a short drive of the Atlantic Ocean, the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia's river system, and the state's 46,000 farms. Chefs here can truly get their hands on just about any locally-sourced ingredient they could want.

2. What neighborhoods should people visit when they come to your city?

If you come to Richmond, there are two very different neighborhoods you should visit: Carytown and Jackson Ward.

Carytown is new - development didn't really begin until 1920 (unlike much of Richmond, which was founded in 1737, making it one of the US's oldest cities). It's a mile-long stretch of Cary Street - colorful, walkable, and jam-packed with over 200 unique local restaurants, boutiques, and small businesses. In fact, The Huffington Post named it the one place in Virginia you must visit! Also unlike much of Richmond, Carytown is NOT on the National Register of Historic Places, so it is always changing to keep up with the times.

Jackson Ward is completely the opposite. This mostly residential neighborhood is one of Richmond's oldest. Recently, the city has been working with local businesses (especially restaurants) to revitalize Jackson Ward. Alongside amazing southern food, you'll find a great amount of respect for prominent African-American Richmonders - a statue to commemorate Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, and the home of the late Maggie Walker, the first woman to charter a bank in the United States.

3. What is the best time of year to visit your city?

Any time of year! Richmond is always open.

If I had to choose, I'd pick the late Spring/early Summer. There is something special about the energy here when porches open up after the winter, and al fresco dining returns. And if the weather is warm enough, you can take advantage of all of Richmond's non-culinary offerings, including our underrated but world-class downtown waterfront. Did you know Richmond is the only place in the US where you can find Class IV rapids within city limits?

4. Are there any events foodies should plan their trip to your city around?

Broad Appetit! For one weekend each June, Broad Street is closed to vehicle traffic, and many of Richmond's local restaurants go mobile! Stroll along, and visit as many restaurants' booths as you like. For just $3 per plate, you get to sample some of each restaurant's best food, and the event benefits FeedMore, one of Virginia's largest food banks.

5. What can people expect on your food tours?

When you tour with River City Food Tours, you'll find a perfect mix of food, history, and fun. Obviously, food is #1 - there will be lots of it, and it'll all be delicious! But I also like to ensure that in addition to learning about each establishment we visit, my guests also learn something about their place within the context of the neighborhood. We'll discuss it's origins, growth, and notable characters, as well as point out any interesting landmarks and/or buildings. Mostly, I just want to tell interesting stories in between bites!

Food-Collage-Square

Finally, a food tour is supposed to be fun! So I try to ensure a lot of positive energy exists between myself and my guests. One of my goals is for people to leave thinking, "Even if that was simply a regular tour without any food at all, I still would have loved the experience!"

I love Discover Richmond Food Tours and would recommend this to anyone! Whether you're local or just visiting RVA, it truly is fun for anyone. I had the pleasure of being gifted a tour certificate from my co-workers who all know how much of a foodie I am. I finally found a good time to go when the weather was pretty mellow, and it was just perfect to walk around for the tour. I opted for the Churchill food tour, and shockingly had not tried many of the places on the tour, so was in for a treat. I wasn't expecting the history tour along with it, but that was nice to hear about Richmond's history while walking and site seeing. The tour guides are great and excited to be there and giving the tours, which also makes for a great experience. There were about five stops on the tour within two hours and it was a nice balance of walking, eating and taking breaks to learn. Some tours and stops even include alcohol, so that was a nice surprise. I've already bought another gift certificate to check out a different food tour. Highly recommend this experience to all, especially my foodies and history buffs!

Did the 11am- 1:30pm Church Hill food tour with my husband for my birthday. We moved to Richmond about 5 years ago, but still have a lot of neighborhoods to discover! Our tour guide, Erin shared so much history not only about the restaurants we visited but also about the Church Hill neighborhood and RVA! We visited Svb Rosa, Kahlo's Taqueria, Pizza bones, Proper Pie and Second Bottle. Each location was prepared for our groups visit with individual items for each member in our group! Even made accommodations for dietary restrictions! Here's what we got at each stop: Sub Rosa- chocolate croissant Kahlo's- Barbacoa Beef Tacos Pizza Bones- Cheese Pizza Proper Pie- Pork and Peach BBQ hand pie Second Bottle- one red and white wine tasting Would highly recommend for folks who moved to the area, folks with friends and town or just a fun a daytime activity with partner or friends.

We had a great time on our tour with Taylor this afternoon in the arts district. She was energetic, quirky and full of amazing facts. She talked about the food, changes in the neighborhood and lots of fun architectural facts. We also loved the bites organized for us and look forward to doing another tour next time we are in town.

Wow! Another great Discover Richmond tour today. Olivia is so personable and knowledgeable-- I'd follow her anywhere! It was a beautiful day in Carytown (Olivia arranged the weather ) and the food was AMAZING! Loved it all but shout out to the tomato soup from Home Sweet Home and Bev's coffee oreo ice cream! Yum! i did the Carytown tour several years ago and enjoyed it again. I have been on and enjoyed all of their food tours and a scavenger hunt, too. Great stuff! Do yourself a favor and support this small, family-owned business. You will be glad you did!

So RCFT has pivoted great during COVID. They have some Richmond scavenger hunts! My friends & I took the afternoon to try out Church Hill. I learned so much! I took tons of pictures but didn't want to ruin the hunt for anyone else hehe. I will say -- if you get lazy and want to drive to some places, you will still need to get out the car to hit the GPS target, look around and find certain clues.

Would highly recommend this tour! Everything we had was absolutely delicious, and I am looking forward to going back to each place we stopped at! We had Dilwyn as a tour guide, and he was fantastic - he perfectly balanced telling us about history of the Church Hill area with background on the restaurants, food, and drinks that we tried along the way!

Photo of Hank V.

Recently did the Church Hill food tour and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about this great area of Richmond and sample several awesome food and drink places. We were very surprised at how much food we sampled. The stops may vary tour to tour but on ours there was almost too much to eat. The tour guide was awesome and very knowledgeable of the area and the places we stopped. Nice mix of history, neighborhood info and insights on the businesses. We live in the area but haven't spent much time in Church Hill but thanks to the tour, we now have some new places that we will definitely be going back to.

Taking a food tour can be such a fun way to experience a city's culinary culture from a fresh perspective. River City Food Tours is a company that does an excellent job and I'd 100% recommend based on my afternoon wandering around Carytown yesterday. I had been considering doing a tour with them ever since I moved down here in August but I always had something else going on. Yesterday I decided that if I woke up and there were still slots available for the day's tour, I would book. Sure enough, a few remained and I purchased my ticket. Shortly thereafter, an email popped in saying to meet at 10 Italian Cafe at 2 pm. It also provided parking suggestions since Carytown can get a bit busy. I walked into the cafe about five minutes ahead of time and was one of the final people to arrive. Maggie, our guide for the day, had me sign a waiver for liability purposes and suggested getting a drink if I wanted since it would be one of our longer stops. Six were planned for the day. (1) 10 ITALIAN CAFE: I grabbed a Paulaner Oktoberfest and took a seat. Some others had basic import beers as well, but the people who selected wine really enjoyed their generous pours of quality blends. I think it'd be cool if the cafe elevated their beer offerings a tad and maybe offered some Italian crafts, like LoverBeer, Extranomnes, or even just Del Ducato. But that might be a stretch...the place is tiny! But just a suggestion (I'd drink 'em, I promise). After Maggie went over some housekeeping rules, such as letting her cross the street first, we dug into our first course...or really first three courses in one! We had paninis (veggie or turkey/cheese/pesto...soooo good), truffle sfizzini, and caprese. I'm not even a big tomato person (at all, just do a search of my reviews...), but everything I had was seriously delicious. Plus they gave us so much food to try that the nine of us couldn't even manage to finish it all! And this was stop number one! As an added treat, we were each able to sample their incredible espresso. I need that stuff daily! It's safe to say, I will be back and I'm so glad this tour group introduced me to the cute little Italian-centric eatery and cafe. It may have been my personal favorite of all the stops. (2) CAN CAN BRASSERIE: After we left 10 Italian, we learned a bit about the history of the eyesore strip mall in Carytown. Apparently, it was a model for many others across the country, so that's cool. After that little pit stop, we walked over to Can Can, a gorgeous, French-themed bistro with a bustling crowd. Again, we were told it would be a good place to buy a drink if we wanted, so most of us went up to the bar. I enjoyed my craft beer here the most -- it was a wild ale by Captain Lawrence -- but the price tag was super steep. Over $10 after tip. Eek! As for the food here, we got French bread and butter (oh my goodness), a TON of delectable frites with exceptional dipping sauces, and mussels. I mentioned I had never eaten a mussel before and every single person in the group stopped what they were doing to watch me eat it. It was hilarious. It didn't taste bad, but I couldn't get over the texture or weird crunch sooo it probably won't become part of my meal rotation any time soon...but #adventurous? (3) HOME SWEET HOME This cozy little bar had been on my bookmarks list for a couple months so I was thrilled to find out it was on the tour route. [Each stop was a surprise.] Even better, we were given samples of their mac and cheese slow-roasted pork sandwich. Like why is that a thing? That's not fair to all the other sandwiches of the world! In other words, yes, I loved it. And this is my type of bar -- super chill, comfortable, and I don't think they'd care if I showed up solo to drink (ah, the perks of moving to a new place and not knowing many people..). But seriously: I will absolutely be back soon. (4) XTRA'S CAFE Meeeh, this was my least favorite. Honestly, I wasn't a fan at all. I probably should've mentioned that I usually can't tolerate peppers, but it's not a real allergy or whatever so I didn't. Their fajita kinda wrecked my stomach. Overall, the vibe inside in general wasn't my scene either. It felt maybe too modern...like it was trying to be something it wasn't? I will say the chalkboard menu did have some items that looked tasty, but I don't think I'd be in a hurry to return any time soon. No one in the group seemed too enthralled by it...with many saying their mouths were on fire. (5) THE TOTTERING TEACUP I was in pain here, but I can tell you...100% I WILL return soon! Oh my goodness, this tea-themed spot was ADORABLE beyond words. I love love tea and I just want to try every single variant they offer. It is such a cute setup. Apparently, it's on the newer side too. Also Yelp just told me I'm reaching my character limit soon. Ergh. (6) CARYTOWN CUPCAKES This is a Richmond institution. It was fitting to include. Thank you for an awesome afternoon! I'm out of space now.

We took the Arts District tour this weekend. It was fantastic- nice variety of stops for sure. Venues and my notes: * Pop's- a green risotto made with brocolli and shaved Parmesan. Super creamy and yummy. They had a painting on the wall that my grandmother has in her home. The owner, Patty, told me that it was once in her father's home. JC Penny's circa 1970s. * Aloha Cafe- Hawaiian luau-style pork (but not cooked in an imu); sticky rice; Hawaiian macaroni salad. Very very tasty. Brian warned us that these are some of the friendliest people we would ever meet. He wasn't kidding. We all got a kiss and a hug goodbye from the staff! I really liked this stop. * Stoplight Gelato- We all got a sample, and all 15 people on the tour got a different flavor. I think mine was the caramel and it was pretty good (although probably not what I would have picked had I chosen the flavor myself). Beautiful old building that used to be a grainery I believe. Owner bought it and had plans to go into business with her son. Sadly, her son passed away while it was still only halfway complete, and she had to finish the project. She did the right thing. She hired people to make the gelato, after having sent them to culinary school. She is so inspirational. I love this sweet little business! * Lift Coffee- Mural of wings on the wall and the message that the owner wants to provide is that coming in here and drinking a cup of coffee will lift you up. Here we sampled the Almond joy latte (too sweet for my taste, but everyone else seemed to really love it) and a bite of their sandwiches. I had some sort of grilled cheese and bacon and it. Was divine. * J Komi- Korean place. We had two types of Kimbap. They were both pretty tasty. * Wong Gonzalez- Asian and Mexican fusion. Shrimp taco was delightful. We also got a dessert that was basically a beignet/fritter type of thing soaked in tequila. Oh my gosh was this delicious. That thing may have been my favorite morsel on the tour. We left fairly full. Nice walking distance. Friendly businesses. A note on Richmond: REALLY cool city. Go buy property now, before downtown explodes with new businesses and revival. (Sort of already has.) For anyone new to Richmond, visiting Richmond, or living in Richmond for years will likely gain something from this tour. (Hopefully not just 5 pounds.)

Thank you so much for your time. It was a great experience with the food and at the same time learning the history of Cincinnati. Mrs. Laura is very acknowledged of the history and also about the foods. Very friendly and very polite with us. It was a great experience if I come back to Cincinnati I will schedule another food tour again. Thanks, Mrs. Laura, and thanks Riverside Food tours

Laura was an excellent guide. Very knowledgeable in the history of Cincy. All of the food taste were good. My thumbs down was in jest. I’m not a smoothie person. Really enjoyed the tour.

Laura was an amazing tour guide! She was lively, knowledgeable, fun, and super kind! Highly recommend this tour if you’d like to eat delicious local meals and learn more about the history of Cincinnati! It’s perfect for people new to the city or those who like to explore something new.

I had an amazing time touring Cincinnati with my friends and colleagues. David, our guide was very knowledgeable, and friendly which made a great difference in our tour. Thank you, David!

So fun! Laura was a great guide! It was great to explore our own city with our teenagers. Great food (6 stops!) and great sightseeing! We will definitely be signing up for more tours with Riverside!

I highly recommend this tour, Laura was so informative of the history around Over the Rhine, and the food was next level fantastic. There was so much I even had to take some home! She gave us a lot of recommendations around the area and even walked me to the local pottery studio where I did another tour! Fantastic, thank you so much Laura!

Awesome experience from start to finish. Beth, our tour guide, was so pleasant and knowledgeable. Food quality was excellent…such an array of Cincinnati flavors. Highly recommend!

I had a fantastic time on the food tour with my husband! Laura, our tour guide, was outstanding. She reached out via text ahead of time to address any questions and ensure we knew where to meet her. Laura's extensive knowledge was truly impressive, and we learned so many fascinating facts from her. The food stops were equally incredible, and the amount of food we received was mind-blowing. We wholeheartedly recommend this tour to both locals and visitors. It was a delightful experience!

We wanted to do this tour to learn more about the history of Cincinnati and restaurants in the downtown area. This tour did not disappoint. Our guide, Terry, was very informative and knowledgeable. The restaurants chosen and food served was fantastic. We greatly enjoyed this tour and highly recommend it. Terry was a wonderful guide.

Jackie was a fantastic tour guide! I learned so much about the history of my hometown of Cincinnati! The food at the six eateries was delicious! I am taking another one of their tours in three days!

This company offers the BEST customer service! I sent an email asking for information and the owner personally replied very quickly and gave me the information I needed. I booked the street car tour for my grandson, my sister, and me for a quick vacation to Cincinnati. Our tour guide, Terry, texted us well in advance of the trip to provide logistical information. We had another couple on our tour, so our group of five got along quite well, and Terry was very good at making everyone feel welcome. He provided lots of fun Cincinnati history and information that added to the experience. My nine-year-old grandson thoroughly enjoyed the tour. It was hard to choose a favorite restaurant at the end of the tour because they all were delicious!

This tour is a must. Laura, our tour guide should be classified as a historian of all things, Cincinnati. This tour was well organized and there’s a lot that is packed in the three hours. It was wonderful meeting people from different states as well. She had a wonderful pulse on who we were so that she can deliver and customize the tour. She sent out reminders before the tour to keep us organized. She was warm and inviting. It was a great experience. Her communication skills are A+.

My husband and I were encouraged to make reservations for the Riverside Food Tour after our best friends took the tour in the summer. We are so glad we did! Our host Laura was made for the job! She was personable, knowledgeable and imparted so many pieces of Cincinnati's history to us while ensuring that we were enjoying delicious "tastes" of the city! We whole-heartedly recommend the Riverside Food Tour to everyone coming to Cincinnati for the first (or one hundredth) time!

My mother and I booked a tour with this company on September 25th, which just so happens to be my birthday. We had David as our guide and he was phenomenal! It was a group of 13 and everyone was so friendly and it felt like we all came together. Taste of Belgium is where I was able to try Belgium waffles and Goetta for the first time. Both were VERY good. I especially loved the waffle though. Definitely would recommend this spot if you’re visiting the area. Next we went to Skyline Chili, then to Macaron Bar, and Greater’s Ice Cream. David knows his stuff for sure and was VERY thorough throughout our tour.

We had a great time and David was a wonderful guide. It felt like a friend was showing us around town, not a formal tour. We learned a lot about the city and history and architecture, but also enjoyed the food. Definitely recommend.

Terry did an amazing tour. It was so good. I really learned a lot about Cincinnati and tasted great food.

Jackie was our guide very knowledgeable enjoy the tour. Enjoyed well worth the money. Plenty of good food to eat also.

There were four of us on this food tour with Beth, and we all had an excellent time. It was a great balance of interesting food and history of Cincinnati. Beth made sure everyone was comfortable, had a good time, and shared lots of great information. We would highly recommend this tour.

We took Mike's Mainstrasse food tour on Saturday and had a wonderful time! Mike was the perfect host and gave us interesting facts about each of the restaurants we visited, as well as the Mainstrasse area in general. The food stops were well organized, and the samplings were delicious. A food tour is the best way to see a city and this one is terrific. I would go back and take another Riverside Food Tour as they have many options.

Our tour guide, Beth, was knowledgeable and personable. The tour was even more informative than we had hoped. Great way to learn about the city and experience some good eats! Staff was very accommodating with our dietary restrictions. I am vegetarian and my daughter is such a picky eater. But they figured it out. Great tour and I highly recommend it for people new to the city, visitors to Cincy and even locals!

Today we took the Roebling Bridge Tour in Covington, KY. We visited Molly Malone's, Smoke Justis, Keystone Bar & Grill, Gruff Pizzeria and Blinkers Tavern. Fabulous food at every stop. Highly recommend this tour.

What a fun way to start Reds game day in the city, with a historical tour and sampling of some of OTR’s fine food offerings! Our big group really enjoyed the history from Laura and hospitality from the restaurant teams. Highly recommend to all kinds of groups, as the walk was leisurely and not too taxing on the less mobile. Thank you!

Loved the tour. Great food and 5 restaurants. Interesting info about the neighborhood and the Roebling. Laura was a wonderful, knowledgeable guide!

Laura guided us on a wonderful tour of Covington, the Roebling bridge, and surrounding area. We had delicious food and got a ton of history while we walked through the beautiful historical neighborhood. We had so much fun! Highly recommend!

Our family of 6 did the sites and bites tour on a Friday and we all absolutely loved it. Jackie was our guide and she did a phenomenal job. It was very informative and the samplings of food were great. None of us had ever been to Cincinnati before so we didn't know anything about it, so thought this would be a good way to check all that it had to offer. It was perfect and had us talking of making plans to come back when we have more time to check out what Cinci has to offer. I would highly recommend any of the Riverside Food and Culture Tours based on my experience with this tour.

Fantastic morning with David touring all the historical and current must-see-and-do attractions in Cincy! The food tastings were the best. Skyline Chili, Taste of Belgium, Graeters Ice Cream…were among my favorites. David brought a comfortable, fun vibe to our little group of strangers that met up to experience Cincinnati with a home grown expert! He even gave us tips about crossing the Roebling Suspension Bridge to visit historic Covington, KY.

With our travels over the past 15 to 20 years, we have frequently enjoyed food tours in cities across the country. Our recent food tour with riverside food tours titled Cincy top 10 sites and bites city food tour with Jackie was truly a stand out! In addition to iconic Cincinnati foods, Jackie gave us an abundance of Cincinnati history. With her intelligent and engaging conversation, supplemented by visual aids, (!) she made us fall in love with Cincinnati. Wish we would have been in Cincinnati longer, as I would’ve loved to have taken another one of their tours.

Had a great time on our Cincinnati Food and Findlay Market Tour. Our Guide Terry was a wealth of information and lots of fun!

We did the Mainstrasse tour this past Saturday with Riverside and could not have been happier with it! Mike, our tour guide, was so informative and personable. As it turned out, our party of 4 were the only participants so we had our own private tour. The restaurants and food were fabulous. We can't wait to come back to the area and do one of their other tours. Highly suggest if you are looking for a food tour in the greater Cincy area, you go with Riverside Tours! 5 stars for sure!

Our guide, Beth, was very friendly and knowledgeable. She gave wonderful historic information and insights and gave us excellent recommendations on how to enjoy the city after our tour was over. Food was absolutely delicious! I definitely recommend this tour!

We had a fantastic tour with Laura. Lots of cool history and the food was incredible! This was our second tour and we were planning our third before we even left Findlay Market!

This was an awesome tour and tasting! My sister was in from Florida, so my husband and I thought this would be a fun time. We were right! Our tour guide, David, was amazing! We loved every minute (and taste). We would recommend this fun and informative tour even if you are from the area. We definitely learned a lot from David. THANK YOU!

My fiance and I went on the new Court Street food tour. We both spend time downtown a lot due to our jobs, and we were really excited to hear the history of Court St. and the Hamilton County Court house. The food we had was delicious. Our favorite place to visit on the tour was a restaurant called MidCity. Great food and great atmosphere! Laura, our tour guide, was wonderful!! If you are new to the area or just want to have a fun day date, the court street food tour is perfect!

My mom, aunt, and I ran across this tour online and decided to book it and spend a weekend in Cincinnati! The tour was SO much fun and our tour guide was amazing! We learned a lot about the history of the city and of course the food was delicious! Would highly recommend spending an afternoon doing the Cincinnati Streetcar Tour!

As soon as we booked the tour, Laura texted us immediately with the details and also asked if we had any concerns or questions. She was super professional, very friendly and knowledgeable, and took us to many wonderful restaurants. As we ate, she gave us a brief history of the city and carried poster-cards from the 1800s to compare with the current architecture of the city. She took many pictures of our group that have now become fond memories. I highly recommend this tour- a wonderful way to see Cincinnati's beautiful architecture + understand it's history while also enjoying some lovely meals and treats! Thank you Laura for an amazing experience. My family was so happy.

My family and I have loved the two tours we’ve done with Riverside. A food tour is a fantastic way to experience the city! Laura is a gracious and knowledgeable guide, and she selects a great variety of spots to enjoy. Riverside was recommended to us, and now we are recommending it to friends and family. Money and time well spent!

We had a wonderful tour throughout Covington, KY. Mike was our tour guide and he did a great job of telling us about local history and making sure we experienced a nice variety of restaurants. I hope to return soon to some of these new-found great spots in Mainstrasse Village.

Fun, laid back. A real treat! Terry was an awesome guide. It was Dec 27, we had a little snow on the ground, streetcar was running great, the group was up for a fun time and Terry took us to quite a few local spots. He has relationships with many local restaurateurs so you get in, get seated, have a bite, he gives some local history, and you have a great time. Very personable and sets a great tone. I don’t want to spoil anything but you get good food, see the sites, arts and culture and you’re going to Loooove Cincinnati!

We had a fantastic time on the OTR Cocktail tour. I was able to check of several bars that I’d wanted to try since moving to the area about a year and a half ago and all of the cocktails we tried were excellent. We also got several snacks along the way to break up the drinking. Juliann our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the city and provided an insight into Cincinnati’s history on the walks between bars. Overall it was a fantastic value and experience and would recommend to anyone interested in the bar scene of Cincy!

Great tour with Jackie and Terry! Learned a lot about the history, culture, and FOOD of Cincinnati. We saw all the sights we wanted to see and ate tons of delicious food along the way. I was surprised at how big the servings were. I had expected a bite of this and a bite of that but after the third stop I was almost too full for more. I loved it all and after the tour was over went back to buy more to take home. Most of the food stops included water, so I would have not needed to bring my own... and there were plenty of restroom stops along the way. I would suggest doing this early in your visit to Cincinnati as it was great for learning how to get around, how to ride the Cincinnati Connector and for getting good suggestions for the rest of our stay.

We booked a Saturday Brunch tour in OTR for my birthday! It was cold but we came prepared. Laura was on point! Her knowledge of the surrounding buildings & city was very impressive! Each stop was coordinated perfectly! It was exciting to learn about the city I was born and raised in along with people who had never been. There is so much to offer in Cincinnati! Thank you!

This was the most informative food tour I've been on. David did an excellent job of explaining the history of the town and the restaurants. Highly recommend for any first-time traveler to Cincinnati.

Absolutely loved every minute of this food tour. Our guide, Laura, was completely knowledgeable, not only about the arts, culture and history of Cincinnati, but also about all of the vegan restaurants, bakeries, and chocolate shops we passed along the way. She told entertaining stories, and pointed out lesser-known destinations. The food was amazing as well. The portions and number of food stops we made were far beyond expectations, and included both savories and desserts. I would do the tour all over again just to enjoy all the tasty treats one more time.

What a great tour! Laura was super knowledgeable, made a hot day fun (in and out of the shade) and took us to some great places for food! You will NOT go hungry!

We had an excellent time touring the city with David. He was very knowledgeable, personable and was willing to answer all of our questions and modify the tour to our interests. We came away with an excellent sense of Cincinnati, it’s history and its people. We could not more highly recommend this tour if you are interested in getting a clear sense of what Cincinnati is like.

Loved the Ethnic Food Tour with our guide, Jackie. Our group enjoyed a variety of dishes, Asian, Hawaiian Asian, German, Mexican, and Lebanese. It’s hard to pick a favorite. Soba noodles, pork buns and bubble tea, a mini charcuterie tray of German specialties, Mexican crunch turtle, and Lebanese pita, hummus, and chicken. The portions were substantial, not just a tiny bite, so I will be skipping dinner tonight! I understand they mix it up with a variety of different restaurants to choose from so every tour might include different bites! As we walked through OTR (Over The Rhine) our guide, Jackie, shared some of the history of Cincinnati and its German heritage. I’m a native Cincinnatian and would recommend this tour to locals and visitors. Thanks Riverside Tours!

We loved this tour. Darrell and I only had one day and two nights to take in the sites and sounds of Cincinnati and we are not normally "tour" people. The description of this tour on Airbnb hooked us and boy are we glad it did. What a great way to take in the sites and tastes of this wonderful town! From waffles to goetta, what a culinary treat. David was the best and we were lucky it was 28 degrees. Why, you ask? Because we were the only two on the tour and got David to answer many of our questions. It was a rare treat and we will do it again.

I can't recommend this enough. If you are looking for something fun and different to do for the day in Cincinnati, I highly recommend. We did the brunch and streetcar tour. Laura was our guide and she was so knowledgeable and friendly. We are already making plans for another with some of our friends!

Mainstrasse Tour of Covington was top notch, it’s the first food tour I have ever done and it sets the bar very high. Laura not only knows her food and the best places to go but she knows the local history adding a layer to the tour that makes you appreciate history. The restaurants we stopped in are all locally owned, what a great way to support the local economy. Definitely will go back to have meals at all the establishments. Look forward to taking another tour with Riverside Food & Culture Tours.

A+++ Outstanding tour with Jackie! WOW! Loved learning about and seeing the history, culture, and foods of Cincinnati. We had driven around the downtown area the night before our tour and were not impressed, but with Jackie's perspective and stories, we fell in LOVE with Cincy! We give Riverside Food Tours our highest recommendation! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!! Thank you Jackie & Laura, we'll be back!

Had a wonderful time with Jackie on our Ethnic food tour. She was very friendly and knowledgeable! Our luck had it that myself and my boyfriend were the only ones on that tour that day so we had all the attention. This was a great value for the price and even though I have lived in Cincinnati for more than two years I definitely learned a lot and have greater appreciation for this lovely city. The food stops were great and we felt pleasantly full by the end of it. We will definitely consider doing another one of the tours for a fun date in the future.

We did the Ethnic Eats Tour with Laura. It was a beautiful day and Laura was a fantastic tour guide and so knowledgeable about the OTR area. Food was amazing!! Will absolutely do another one!!

Bread and bagels at The Works Cafe in downtown Portland. Photo by Aimsel Ponti

From New York-style boiled bagels to Montreal-inspired wood-fired ones, there’s lots of great bagels in southern Maine and several shops have the accolades to back that up.

In 2023, Bon Appetit named bagels from Rose Foods and Rover Bagel among the best in the country.

Two years before that,  Food & Wine Magazine put Rover, Forage and Scratch Baking Co. on its list of best bagels in the U.S.

Whether you like yours toasted with cream cheese or as the bread for your breakfast sandwich, you can find plenty of styles and flavors from Biddeford to Brunswick.

BEACH BAGELS

The offerings at Beach Bagels include a French toast and marble bagel, and the cream cheese menu comprises spreads like strawberry, olive and honey walnut. Along with breakfast sandwiches, Beach Bagels has hearty breakfast options like omelets and pancakes. Best of all, you’re steps away from a beach stroll. Just don’t let the seagulls steal your bagel. Dutchman’s opened in 2022 as a pop-up housed at Nomad pizza in Brunswick’s Fort Andross building. It’s since become a permanent fixture there and uses the pizzeria’s wood-fired ovens to bake its bagels. The hand-shaped, honey-boiled bagels come in plain, roasted garlic, poppy and a bagel-of-the-day flavor.

WHEN: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday to Sunday WHERE: Fort Andross, 14 Maine St., Brunswick. dutchmans.me ______________

FORAGE MARKET

Making bagels at Forage Market involves a two-day aging process. The bagels are naturally leavened with wild yeast starter and baked next to a hardwood fire. There are usually five flavors available, including sesame and garlic. Breakfast sandwiches (including vegan options) are available. Forage also has a location in Lewiston. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday WHERE: 123 Washington Ave., Portland. foragemarket.com _____________

MISTER BAGEL

There are 10 or so Mister Bagel locations in Maine, including South Portland and Falmouth. It all began with the Portland location, which was the first bagel shop to open in Maine. The late Rick Hartglass started Mister Bagel in 1977, and it is still a family business. Music fans will appreciate the breakfast sandwich menu, which includes The David Bowie (bacon, egg and American cheese), the Jimmy Buffett (egg with roast beef and cheddar) and The Lady Gaga (avocado, salt and pepper, with or without egg).

It’s a pimento cheese recipe made with cheddar, mayo, roasted red peppers and seasoning and was passed down to co-owner and head baker Allison Reid by her grandmother, Mern.

Rory McIlroy won't rejoin PGA Tour board, says others were 'uncomfortable' with his potential return

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Rory McIlroy won’t be returning to the PGA Tour board, saying Wednesday a plan to replace Webb Simpson was met with resistance from board members.

Simpson, one of six player-directors, recently offered to give up his seat — but only if McIlroy were to replace him. McIlroy would have needed board approval to be reinstated to a position that he resigned from last November .

Recommended Videos

But McIlroy said ahead of the Wells Fargo Championship that conversations surrounding his potential return became “pretty complicated and messy,” which reminded him of why he left in the first place.

“I think with the way it happened it opened up some old wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before,” McIlroy said. “I think there was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason.”

McIlroy’s reinstatement would have been viewed as a chance to help improve the PGA Tour’s stalled negotiations with the Saudi financial backers of LIV Golf.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said the development “is in no way a commentary on Rory’s important perspective and influence.” He said it was a matter of adhering to the governance process of joining the board.

“Webb remaining in his position as a member of the policy board and PGA Tour Enterprises board through the end of his term provides the continuity needed at this vital time," Monahan said.

The world’s No. 2 player said when he stepped down he could no longer commit the time and energy that board work required with the PGA Tour trying to finalize an agreement with the Public Investment Fund.

Unable to finalize a deal by the end of last year, the PGA Tour brought in Strategic Sports Group as a minority investor . That deal could be worth as much as $3 billion.

“I put my hand up to help and it was, I wouldn’t say it was rejected, (but) it was a complicated process to get through to put me back on there,” McIlroy said about potentially returning the board. “So that’s all fine, no hard feelings and we’ll all move on.”

Simpson said he now plans to finish out his three-year term on the board. He said he offered to give up his seat to McIlroy because he’s a “global superstar” and would give Europeans a needed voice in major tour decisions.

McIlroy is still likely to be involved, though not in a board capacity, given the relationships he has built on both tours. He also met with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of PIF, last year during the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai at the end of 2022. McIlroy said on a soccer podcast in January he encouraged the PGA Tour to meet with Al-Rumayyan.

The stunning framework agreement among the PGA Tour, European tour and PIF was announced June 6.

“Rory always had great ideas of how do we move forward, how do we get the love and attention from fans back from where we had it maybe two years ago, how do we grow our business, all things related to the PGA Tour,” Simpson said.

But there are some on the board who remain at odds with the four-time major champion after McIlroy changed his views about LIV Golf in recent months, suggesting that LIV players be allowed to return to the PGA Tour without penalty.

McIlroy also disagreed in February with Jordan Spieth’s comments that a deal with PIF was not needed because of the SSG investment, although it would help with unification.

McIlroy suggested one solution for growing the game would be going to a more global schedule that includes more tournaments overseas, although he questioned whether American players would want to travel out of the United States for a dozen events.

Regardless, McIlroy remains bothered by the state of the game and wants to see a resolution for the good of the fans, a growing faction of which have become unhappy — or even worse, apathetic — with the splintering of players on two watered-down tours.

McIlroy said it's all about finding a compromise for both sides, even though neither side may walk away completely happy.

“I would say I’m impatient because I think we’ve got this window of opportunity to get it done, because both sides from a business perspective ... I wouldn’t say need to get it done, but it makes sense," McIlroy said. "And I just think — I sort of liken it to like when Northern Ireland went through the peace process in the ’90s and the Good Friday Agreement, neither side was happy. Catholics weren’t happy, Protestants weren’t happy, but it brought peace and then you just sort of learn to live with whatever has been negotiated, right?”

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

river city food tours

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

river city food tours

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

river city food tours

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

river city food tours

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
