I have a 2014 Tri Glide and I thought I knew a lot about it. BUT Guess that's all wrong:whiteflag. I can't for the life of me figure where it's at and how to set it ? Can someone shed some light on this for me ? Thanks

trip mileage counter reset button

Rick, the only places I have seen reset or select switches on these is on the faring next to the speedometer (around the 7 o'clock pos.) or on the side of the trim panel on top of the gas tank. Should be something about it in the owner's manual.

trip mileage counter reset button

If its anything like my 2014 Limited, there is a switch on the front side (not facing you while seated) of the left switch assembly. Easy reach with your left index finger and each press scrolls thru total miles, trip A, trip B, miles to empty, then back to total miles. At least by my memory and on my bike. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys I found it. It's on TOP of the left handle Bar right on top of it. All you have to do is with your left index finger is push it down to reset it.Gives you 2 choices. You guys are great Thanks again. Now I really feel stupied :wink

The values showing average fuel consumption, range and average speed will become more stable and reliable the further you travel after pressing the reset button.

For the first few miles after pressing the reset key you will notice that the range increases as you travel. This range takes into account the average fuel consumption since the last time the reset button was pressed. Therefore, the average fuel consumption may decrease when:

- the vehicle stops accelerating;

- the engine reaches its operating temperature (if the engine was cold when the reset key was pressed);

- when driving from an urban area onto the open road.

How to reset miles on a car.

Car odometer

Source: Pixabay

Whether you’re considering selling your current vehicle or searching for a used one, the subject of how to reset miles on a car may be on your mind. After all, the mileage on a vehicle is a significant determinant of its value. This information also helps an owner know when to perform maintenance. So, in this article, we’ll discuss all the critical issues relating to odometers, mileage, and cars.

What’s an Odometer?

An odometer is a device that measures the distance traveled by a vehicle. In the U.S., this data is measured in miles (mileage), while in other countries, the distance is measured in kilometers (kilometrage). Older cars use a set of gears to count wheel rotations (scaled to miles or kilometers) and transfer this information to a mechanical odometer. Newer vehicles use a digital odometer and a computerized system to report mileage.

NOT JUST FOR CAR SHOPPING

The CoPilot app isn’t just for buying a car - our new CoPilot for Owning tool will help you keep track of recalls and gives you advice on which scheduled maintenance tasks are most important.

What’s a Trip Odometer?

A trip odometer is used to record mileage for a particular journey. In the case of a trip odometer, asking, “How to reset miles on a car?” means you can quickly turn the reading back to zero with the push of a button (check the car’s owner manual for specific instructions). Most modern cars have “Trip A” and “Trip B” settings.

Can the Main Odometer Be Set Back to Zero?

Not legally. The odometer must always reflect the actual use of the vehicle. It violates federal law to tamper with the odometer to hide a car’s actual mileage. While odometer rollback was more common in the days of mechanical units, altering a digital odometer is more sinister because there’s less evidence.

On top of state and civil penalties, the threat of multiple years in federal prison is a strong deterrent against widespread odometer tampering. The situation is more likely to occur with small, unscrupulous dealer operations or an individual seeking to boost a car’s value. Remember that disconnecting an odometer so it doesn’t record mileage is also considered tampering. So, the short answer to “How to reset miles on a car?” You don’t.

Do Odometers Go Bad?

It’s rare, but it happens. With older cars, the sending unit on the wheel or the odometer itself may malfunction and prevent the accurate recording of mileage. On newer vehicles, the digital display in the instrument panel can fail. Repairs are possible, but this task is best left to professionals familiar with the legal requirements.

When feasible, the qualified mechanic will move the current mileage information onto the replacement unit (common with digital systems but harder to do with mechanical setups). Reputable odometer repair businesses, sometimes called meter shops, will frequently require access to old and new odometers to ensure proper and accurate repair.

THE 10 MOST RELIABLE USED SEDANS

If you’re ready to start shopping for a used car and reliability is a priority for you, take a look at our list of the top 10 most reliable used sedans on the market today.

Does a Replacement Engine Reset the Odometer?

No. The odometer is a record of use for the entire car. So, a vehicle with a replacement engine should have mileage that reflects things from day one. Even in the case of a brand-new engine, the odometer should reflect the original information.

Can a Digital Odometer Be Reset?

Unfortunately, yes. In fact, tampering with digital odometer systems is arguably more effective because it’s harder to spot. The display can be changed, or the relevant memory chip can be reprogrammed or replaced. However, mileage data is stored in other vehicle systems, like the powertrain control module, so an experienced automotive technician will know where to look for the correct information.

How Can I Tell If a Car Has an Odometer That’s Been Reset?

It comes down to a lot of detective work. First, begin with the obvious. Always check the vehicle history report (CARFAX or AutoCheck, for example). Often, an odometer or mileage issue will get reported here. These accounts aren’t perfect, but consider this information the first line of defense. Note that vehicle history reports can go back as far as 1981.

Next, perform a physical inspection of the car. Does the instrument panel appear to be tampered with? Check if the odometer display is misaligned or if screws are missing from that general area of the dashboard.

At the same time, consider what you know about the car. A 12-year-old car with only 50,000 miles might be a great find, but don’t take things at face value. For example, check out the accelerator and brake pedals for excessive wear beyond what the odometer indicates. The floor mat and carpeting below the pedals may tell you the same thing. Look for other tell-tale signs of extensive use, like a worn-down steering wheel and gear-shift lever.

In addition, you’ll want to see how the paperwork matches up. Review the certificate of title. And ideally, this will be an original document, as rip-off artists can use replacement titles to mask original miles. The title certificate will provide a baseline mileage number. See how it compares with the odometer.

Suppose you’re buying a car brand from a franchised dealer (in other words, a Honda dealer selling a used Honda). In that case, the vehicle’s complete history should be available from the manufacturer. Analyze the car’s repair and maintenance records, which always have mileage information.

With all this information at hand, compare the mileage readings. Do these details make sense? Are there any gaps or conflicting reports? If something doesn’t add up, skip the car and look elsewhere.

Valid Reasons for Resetting an Odometer

Although illegal in many places, there are legitimate reasons for odometer adjustments, but they’re generally limited and strictly regulated. Here are scenarios where adjustments might be necessary:

  • Instrument Cluster Replacement or Repair : If a vehicle’s instrument cluster fails and needs to be replaced or repaired, the new or repaired cluster’s odometer might need to be adjusted to reflect the vehicle’s actual mileage. This is a legitimate reason for the odometer adjustment.
  • Odometer Display Malfunction : In cases where the odometer display is malfunctioning (e.g., digital displays showing incorrect figures), correcting the display to show the correct mileage is necessary and legitimate.
  • Manufacturer Recalls : Occasionally, a manufacturer recall might involve odometer correction if a known issue affects the vehicle’s mileage display. Authorized dealerships would carry out such corrections to ensure accuracy.
  • Pre-delivery Mileage Correction : Sometimes, a new vehicle may show a few miles on the odometer due to being driven within the factory area or dealership. If an error in these initial miles is recorded, a correction might be made before the vehicle is delivered to the customer.

The process involves strict documentation, disclosure, and authorization requirements in all legitimate cases.

HOW MANY SPARK PLUGS DOES A DIESEL ENGINE HAVE?

The answer to this question isn’t as  simple as you’d expect. Let’s look explore the difference between gas and diesel engines and explore just how many spark plugs a diesel engine actually has .

Should I Buy a Car with a Reset Odometer?

It depends. Cars with known odometer issues usually have substantially less pricing than comparably unaffected vehicles. Taking advantage of the savings can be tempting, but what are you getting yourself into? Someone knowing how to reset miles on a car did this for a reason. Is it simply to boost resale value? Or is it masking the need for inevitable repair work such as a transmission rebuild or major engine service?

Yes, you’ll save money, but you could be hit with an expensive repair bill down the road. Also, consider how the resale will be affected when you want to sell or trade in the car. Determine your priorities: lower cost now versus future uncertainty.

Car Odometer Frequently Asked Questions

What is the normal reading for an odometer.

There’s no such thing as normal or standard odometer readings. Depending on the vehicle’s age and how much the owner drives, cars can accumulate up to 250,000 miles or more on the odometer.

Can you reset the miles on a vehicle?

No. Mileage is one of the primary factors during vehicle appraisal and determining its sale value. In fact, it’s illegal to alter or tamper with your car’s odometer, especially intending to deceive potential buyers or sellers about the car’s actual condition.

What is an odometer rollback?

While resetting or tampering with an odometer is illegal, it certainly won’t stop people from doing odometer rollbacks. With the right tools and know-how, the odometer can be rolled back to take hundreds to thousands of miles off the displayed number. Even digital odometers can be altered using special tools.

Is odometer fraud still common today?

Sadly, yes. Since more cars now use digital odometers, it was assumed that odometer fraud incidents would be fewer. However, according to the NHTSA,  over 450,000 vehicles  sold yearly have fraudulent odometer readings.

What is considered good mileage on a used car?

The average car puts in 10,000-12,000 miles every year. So when you’re looking to buy a used car, check the vehicle’s total mileage and divide the number by the vehicle’s age in years – this is to calculate the car’s annual average. A used car is considered to have good mileage if it has average or below-average numbers. But of course, you should also consider the vehicle’s condition, make and model, accident history, and repair and maintenance records.

How many miles is too much for a used car?

In the past, while it was common to stay away from cars that have high mileage, modern vehicles are now built to last. Although mileage remains a crucial factor in determining a used car’s value, high mileage doesn’t automatically make the car less reliable for transportation. A good rule of thumb is to have the used car inspected by a mechanic if it has more than 100,000 miles on the odometer. Ultimately, the condition, make and model, and vehicle history can give a better picture of the car’s overall condition.

Are you talking about the Trip A/Trip B, where you can reset the mileage? If so, select if you want Trip A or Trip B, press and hold the trip button (on your steering wheel) and the Trip mileage should reset on that setting to 0 miles. Your average MPG and average MPH will zero as well. This will also reset the "bars" that are set to 5 minute or 1 minute intervals on another display setting, as well as the "tank mileage" display setting. If there is something else you want to do, you'll need to clarify. When you said "the gauge never increased" what do you mean? What didn't increase? (Trip A or B miles? avg MPG? avg MPH?) Remember, you have multiple settings from the trip setting. Trip A, Trip B, Odometer (total miles) and blank (I think). This only shows on the bottom of the display. For the "Display Setting" you have the HSI setting, 5 min or 1 min bars, Engine/Batter schematic, Blank Setting, and I think another one).

How To Reset Trip Mileage BMW?

Additionally, for about three seconds, hold down the “BC” button on the turn signal stalk (while the trip odo is showing). It’ll restart.

In This Article...

On a BMW 3 Series, reset the daily mileage counter to 0

. Let’s move on to the crucial stage, which is how to reset your BMW 3 Series’ daily odometer. Even though this stage is frequently simple to carry out, some of you, such as new owners of the BMW 3 Series, might not be familiar with the procedure.

We’ll now examine the various methods for resetting the trip odometer on a BMW 3 Series to zero:

  • Hold down the right button on your dashboard for a few seconds until the trip odometer reads zero.
  • If this button is inoperable, you can reset the odometer on your BMW 3 Series by pressing the button at the end of the right-hand counter-commodo for a few seconds.
  • Finally, on some of the more recent models, you might have to proceed through your dashboard and display to reset your vehicle to zero by going through the settings.

On a BMW 330i, how do you reset the trip odometer?

Push the button at the end of the turn signal stalk to raise the odometer, then hold the button down. My own is programmed to restart each time I refuel.

On a BMW 1 Series, how do you reset the trip odometer?

Just below the speedometer on the dashboard, there is a small knob. The trip odometer will reset if you press it.

On a BMW R1250GS, how do you reset the trip odometer?

Use the rocker switch to enter the bike menu and then tab down. Then choose what you wish to reset by selecting Re set individual values. To access the reset option for the appropriate trip, drop down to “my bike,” then tab to trip computers 1 or 2, and then drop down once more.

On a BMW TFT, how do you reset the trip meter?

I just purchased an R1200GS TE. Finding out that I reset the journey distance meter to 0 is proving to be difficult.

Neither the handbook nor the internet have anything that I can find. I don’t want to rely on the estimated mileage provided by the computer.

When I fill up, I would want to start the trip over. Has anyone discovered a method to zero the trip?

Hi, The Manuel must have been changed. Now, it’s talking about the cruise control. In mine, it’s on page 90, section 4. Trip reset isn’t actually covered, however I’ll post instructions later for others.

To the on-board computer, please. To trigger the computer. To choose Autom reset or reset all, scroll down. This restarts both journeys.

On my previous GS, I used to press a button a several times. I suppose this is advancement.

Visit “MY VEHICLE.” Using the wheel, navigate to “ONBOARD COMPUTER.” TRIP 1 and all other values, including them all, can be set here.

Visit “MY VEHICLE.”

Scroll with the wheel to “TRIP COMPUTER.” Sadly, there is no way to set each value separately. Everything is at stake.

Is it possible to reset a car’s mileage?

Can a vehicle’s miles be reset? No. In reality, tampering with an automobile’s odometer is prohibited, especially if the goal is to mislead prospective buyers or sellers about the vehicle’s actual state. One of the key elements considered when evaluating a vehicle and establishing its sale value is its mileage.

My trip odometer needs to be reset.

By pushing and holding the RESET button on the left-hand steering wheel lever, you can reset all the data in the trip odometer TM, including the distance, average fuel consumption, average speed, and driving time. Only the distance driven is reset when the RESET button is tapped.

  • With the engine off, turn the key to the ON position.
  • For TEN seconds, press and HOLD the ODOMETER button. It can be found at the Instrument Cluster’s extreme bottom LEFT corner.
  • The dash screen will display FGSTNR along with a number. Your chassis number is this (See image example).
  • The LAST FOUR numerals are added. Ex: 3+4+5+6= 18 (taken from the image above). Your UNLOCK CODE is going to be 18.
  • Press and hold the ODOMETER button one more until the FGSTNR clearing area appears (you will still see numbers in the top section).
  • Press the odometer button until the upper Menu area (entering code menu) reaches 19 after the bottom area has cleared; When you do, the text will appear at the bottom: Press the odometer button to enter your unlock code after turning the lock on (from the example above) This is seen in the bottom portion.
  • The screen will appear as in the image above after a little period, at which point the menu will once again appear at the top. To access the number 21 menu, press the odometer button (also theentering code menu).
  • On the screen’s bottom, it will say: RESET? To complete the reset, press the odometer button.

Your BMW’s computer has been restarted! The existing settings must now be added again, or new ones must be added.

**NOTE: Slowly repeat the procedures if you are unable to reset the BMW computer on your first attempt. If you’re still having trouble, ask the dealership for help or refer to your car’s owner’s manual.

Can BMW detect mileage correction?

No is the simplest response to this query. The vehicle’s actual odometer reading cannot be accessed by the auto scanner tool. It only calculated the mileage using the separation between the beginning and ending points of the route you walk.

Although we haven’t looked at every gadget on the market, there may be some that can spot mileage rollback. There are API tools that can identify such fraud with accuracy. However, you cannot find anything that a tool has never recorded. No instrument will ever be able to determine the altered distance because the mileage stopper tools completely alter this information.

Be advised that this tool is not intended for illegal activities. To evaluate your car’s performance, go solo. You should exercise caution when purchasing a car because many people use this tool to sell their vehicles with good mileage. When turned on, the module automatically changes the distance traveled.

How long does the BMW take to reset?

My automobile won’t turn over. After some web study, it appears that the ECU is most likely the problem. How can the factory settings be restored on a BMW computer?

In less than two minutes, find out if your auto insurance is being overcharged.

Amazing investigative abilities! Unplugging the negative battery cable for 10 to 15 minutes will reset a BMW ECU. For most BMW models, this ought to be sufficient to reset the ECU.

You can also try jumpstarting your car to reset it if this doesn’t work. If a low battery is the problem, this will also be helpful!

However, if you still have trouble starting your car after jumping the battery, you should speak with a mechanic to find out more about what’s going on.

Save money on your car insurance with the Jerryaan insurance comparison app, which searches for inexpensive prices with more than 50 different insurance companies for free. This will help offset the cost of expert repairs.

You may make adjustments at any time, receive prices instantly, and text an agent with any queries you may have. Each year, $887 is saved by the typical Jerry user.

Can a distance be restarted?

Yes, you can reset your odometer if that is what you’re wondering. However, it’s against the law in the US to reset your car’s mileage. This practice is prohibited by Federal law and should not be used by anyone unless you intend to break the law.

According to 49 U.S. CodeSS 32703, section two, it is strictly forbidden to disconnect, reset, or otherwise manipulate an odometer with the intention of changing the reported mileage. But if an odometer’s mechanism is broken in some specific circumstances, it may be essential to reset it.

A vehicle’s odometer may be repaired or replaced in accordance with 49 U.S. Code SS 32704 as long as the mileage it recorded prior to the repair or replacement stays the same. Resetting is only an option if the issue cannot be fixed by repair. The odometer would need to be reset to zero, and there would be a sticker on the left door notifying you that you needed to do so.

Therefore, avoid resetting your odometer as much as you can unless there are unique conditions because it is prohibited. Resetting your car’s mileage when you’re trying to sell it can go very wrong with the individual you’re doing business with. You can be held liable for forging documents and interfering with the car’s legal papers by lying.

Falsifying the odometer reading for a sales transaction also reflects a misrepresentation of the actual mileage of the car. Therefore, if the car’s present condition is not accurately disclosed, it is unlawful and might endanger the new owner’s safety.

Rather than resetting your odometer after replacing your engine, consider reading about what to do next. Here, we’ll provide you with appropriate, safe, and, above all, legal guidance regarding what you should do next after replacing your old engine.

Describe the BMW trip computer.

The average mileage, average speed, and distance driven during the specified time period are shown on the trip computer display of a 2004 Acura TL.

A trip computer is a computer that is installed in some cars. The majority of modern trip computers calculate, record, and display the distance traveled, average speed, average fuel consumption, and fuel consumption in real-time.

The first mechanical trip computers, such the Halda Speedpilot made by a Swedish taximeter maker, were created as automobile equipment in the 1950s to help drivers keep to a set timetable, which was especially helpful in rallying. The 1958 Saab GT750 came equipped with one as standard. A complicated mechanical gadget that displayed the average speed and was standard equipment on the 1952 Fiat 1900 was known as the “mediometro” in Italian. General Motors’ Cadillac division debuted the “Cadillac Trip Computer” in 1978, which was offered on the Cadillac Seville. Chrysler debuted an electric trip computer the same year on its entry-level Omni/Horizon. They can be simple or sophisticated. The most basic trip computers include an outdoor temperature indicator and average fuel mileage. Information about gasoline, speed, distance, cardinal direction (compass), and elapsed time is frequently provided in mid-range versions. The most sophisticated trip computers are only found in high-end automobiles and frequently show average calculations for two drivers, a stopwatch, tire-pressure data, over-speed warnings, and many other functions.

The trip computer’s display may occasionally be found in the gauge cluster, dashboard, navigation system, or overhead console. Scheduled maintenance is mentioned on certain displays. The current Acura TL performs this in phases, initially warning the driver with a “Due Soon” sign, then changing to “Due Now” once the predetermined mileage is achieved, and finally changing to “Past Due” once more time or distance has passed. Mercedes-Benz automobiles continuously check the oil quality and warn the driver if it has deteriorated significantly. Depending on the number and duration of journeys, engine temperature, and other variables, GM and FCA vehicles send out oil change reminders. While “setting preferences” is now typically done through a center screen that is also used for the backup camera and radio in most cars, some vehicles now use the trip computer to let owners adjust specific parts of vehicle behavior, such as how the power locks work.

Some trip computers can show the mechanics’ diagnostic codes. When the mechanic needs to view the codes while operating the vehicle, this is extremely helpful. The ScanGauge, created by Linear Logic in 2004, was the only accessory that could be quickly installed (through OBDII) and functioned as a trip computer, four digital gauges at once, and a reader of trouble codes. The 12 measurements that are accessible on this gadget can be used as the 4 digital gauges. You can individually choose between miles/km, gallons/liters, Celsius/Fahrenheit, and PSI/kPa as the units of measurement.

The OBDII interface and the Arduino hobbyist microcontroller platform were used to create a low-cost DIY trip computer that was distributed under the GPL open source license in 2008.

Fuel economy

trip mileage counter reset button

The average fuel economy is calculated by the total driving distance and fuel consumption since the last average fuel economy reset.

Fuel economy range: 0 ~ 99.9 km/L, L/100 km or mpg

The average fuel economy can be reset both manually and automatically.

To clear the average fuel economy manually, press the OK button on the steering wheel for more than 1 second when the average fuel economy is displayed.

To make the average fuel economy be reset automatically whenever refuelling, select the "Energy Consumption reset" mode in User Setting menu of the LCD Windows (Refer to More Details ).

OFF - You may set to default manually by using the trip switch reset button.

After ignition - The vehicle will automatically set to default once 4 hours pass after the Ignition is in OFF.

After refuelling - After refuelling more than 6 litres and driving over 1 km/h, the vehicle will reset to default automatically.

The average fuel economy is not displayed for more accurate calculation if the vehicle does not drive more than 10 seconds or 50 metres (0.03 miles) since the ignition switch or ENGINE START/STOP button is turned to ON.

This mode displays the instant fuel economy during the last few seconds when the vehicle speed is more than 10 km/h (6.2 mph).

Fuel economy range:

0.0 ~ 30 km/L, L/100 km or 0.0 ~ 50.0 mpg

Accumulated driving information mode

This display shows the accumulated trip distance (1), the average fuel efficiency (2), and the total driving time (3).

trip mileage counter reset button

Accumulated information is calculated after the vehicle has run for more than 300 metres.

If you press "OK" button for more than 1 second after the Cumulative Information is displayed, the information will be reset.

If the engine is running, even when the vehicle is not in motion, the information will be accumulated.

Drive info display

This display shows the trip distance (1), the average fuel efficiency (2), and the total driving time (3) information once per one ignition cycle.

trip mileage counter reset button

Fuel efficiency is calculated after the vehicle has run for more than 300 metres.

The Driving Information will be reset 4 hours after ignition has been turned off. So, when the vehicle ignition is turned on within 4 hours, the information will not be reset.

If you press "OK" button for more than 1 second after the Driving Information is displayed, the information will be reset.

Trip meter reset

  • Add to quote

So I was searching around and I couldn't find anything on it. I have an 00 Xterra and I just recently started having an issue where the trip meter resets after I shut the rig off. It didn't do it before so I'm not sure what the deal is. The only other issue I have with it is that when it's hot the cluster shuts off, but that not what I'm curious about at the moment since there are plenty of write ups on it. Has anyone had this happen before? What was it?

I've never seen this phenomenon before on any vehicle I have owned, so I am only guessing as to the cause. When you mentioned that the instrument cluster shuts off when it gets hot that could mean a short circuit or a loose connection somewhere. Do you smell anything, like burning plastic while it is in operation? The trip odometers are part of the instruments so they might be affected by this as well, especially if they are resetting when the vehicle is turned off. The instrument cluster might have to be pulled out of the dashboard to check the connections.

Not sure about the Xterra, and especially if it differs between 1st and 2nd Gen, but with cars from other manufacturers, the mileage will continue to accrue even if it isn't displayed due to an issue with the IPC. Then, once the issue is resolved, the correct mileage will appear. So even if you drive it with a broken odometer, if the car runs, it'll still rack up the miles/kilometers/kilometres.

Trip Counter Reset on Refuel?

  • Add to quote

[Edited for clarity of explanation] I've poked around quite a bit and can't seem to find this one. I'd like my trip distance counter to automatically reset when I refuel. Yes, I know I can "just hit the reset button", but that is often overlooked for a variety of reasons. I've owned several other vehicles that have had this option, and it's become my preference. Since the MFA screen has the "display since refuel" option that shows the distance since being refueled (among other things), the vehicle must already a method of "knowing" when it's been refueled. Haven't seen anything in the car settings menu or the green menu, so I'm curious if anyone's figured this one out!

Never heard of this tweak before.

I just reset my trip counter manually each time. As far as automatically I'm wondering if the onboard computer waits to see a full signal from the fuel tank as a reference signal.

What do you exactly mean by ‘trip counter’ On my 2016 7P V6 diesel (Australia). • The trip distance counter on the instrument cluster is reset by a manual push button. • I can manually scroll through trip computer for 1) distance travelled, 2) average speed and 3) fuel consumption using up and down button on the steering wheel for a) long term average, b) since refuel and c) since start of trip (dunno the ‘start‘, probably that day or ignoring short breaks). I select these with the ‘OK’ button on the steering wheel. Good luck Brett

I get it. Car systems can clearly work out how much there is in the tank regardless of whether you brim the tank or only do a partial fill, and how you've been driving to give an expected mileage duration. I'd prefer to see miles remaining rather than a fuel guage! I'd like it even better if the miles remaining turned orange at a point of my choosing and then red, also at a point of my choosing, with appropriate bing-bongs at each set point. I'd also prefer a digital speedo in a heads up display on the screen but -obversely - I prefer a circular rev counter with the max revs set at 12 o'clock and with a needle pointer!

Service Reminder Reset *Sticky*

  • Add to quote

To reset the service reminder, do the following: 1. Push the key fob all the way into the dash slot (until it clicks) 2. With your foot off of the brake, tap the engine start button - this should light up a portion of the gauges. 3. Push down the trip mileage counter reset button (a nub to the right of the RPM gauge) 4. Still holding down the trip mileage counter reset button, and with your foot off of the brake, push the engine start button for about 2 seconds until all of the informational lights (i.e. check engine, etc) light up. Once they light up, you can stop pushing the engine start button (but continue to hold down the trip mileage counter reset button). 5. After a couple more seconds of holding down the trip mileage counter reset button, you will note that the "i" (the alert that there is a vehicle message) will begin to blink. This is your cue to release the trip mileage counter reset button. You must do this before the "i" stops blinking, or it will not reset. 6. Restart the car to confirm that you have successfully reset the "book time for maintenance" message.

Re: Service Reminder Reset *Sticky* (vivek9856) Thanks Vivek. I had to print out your write-up and take it out to my S80 to clear the annoying maintenance reminder light on my dash. It was my 12-month oil change due warning. Anyway, I was trying to clear the reminder light by doing the sequence off the top of my head, and it wasn't working. Then I followed what you wrote, and it cleared. Yeah! Turns out that I wasn't releasing the trip reset button while the light was blinking. You and everybody have a great Thanksgiving Holiday.

Went to reset the service reminder on my 2008 S80 T6 AWD as described saw a code 012 then next screen was 163. Before I reset what do these codes mean? Thanks

Did you get a answer to this? Mine dies the same thing and I didn't see any response to this

Re: (dsm) This worked perfectly, thanks for the info!

trip mileage counter reset button

Thank you! Wonderful sticky!

Is it possible to reset your service light for a 12 month interval before it comes on? I am assuming my light will come on at 52,500 miles (which is soon) but if it doesn't (because I bought car used) and I want a fresh start, it would be cool if I could reset it on my own before it comes on.

Thanks for the info!

So... is this the preferred procedure for all 2007-current S80 models? If not, can someone post which models this works on and which it doesn't? I'm starting to shop for an s80 (hopefully a purchase will be made ~a year from now)... and would appreciate the info. While not a complete 'show stopper'... having to reset this reminder at a dealer is annoying, so I'd like to know which models it applies to ahead of time. Thanks! Sully

This worked for me and my 2007 S80. The message I got was "Book time for Maintenance" which seems just a bit vague. Thanks again to the OP.

The messages go in steps Book time for maintenance Time for maintenance, And past due or something to this effect..

Hi, I have a quick question pertaining the procedure you just described. My 2007 S80 V8 with 170k miles has been troubled with a few oil leaks lately and Ive gotten them all fixed. However my engine idle is still rough and I'm afraid the engine has some more underlying issues. When I reset the maintenance light I noticed something that greatly worried me. It seemed that as I was resetting the light the check engine light and red oil lantern light were on, even after all the other lights had gone off. These lights however are not normally on. I would like too ask you, when you reset the maintenance light do you see a check engine light and a red oil light. Because if you don't I suspect that my cars engine is in need of further repairs.Open to advice on what to do here. Thank you. Franz.

I can show you a picture of it if you like.

Took me 3 tries... but it worked! This is sweet, thanks for sharing! Glad to know I didn't need to fire up VIDA to do it.

07 S80 Keyless worked too. No need to put the FOB in slot.
