If you’re looking for a reliable bike to get you and your possessions around then Cube’s Travel SL sure takes some beating.

The Travel SL is great to ride, can be loaded like a mule and has proven to be utterly reliable. It arrives with everything a serious commuter requires to clock up serious miles and — thanks to some clever spec choices — requires an exceptionally low amount of maintenance.

Cube Travel SL frame and kit

The no frills aluminium frameset of the Cube places its rider upright and with a very clear view of the road ahead. Its stealthy black paint finish is tough and prevents unnecessary attention, for when the bike is parked in town centres.

It already arrives loaded with everything a serious commuter bike should have, including a decent rear rack, full-length mudguards and LED lights powered by a bike dynamo at the front wheel. Despite all of that kit, this bike weighs only 13.8kg for a 58cm model.

Regularly cleaning and lubricating a drivetrain is a first world problem at best, but it’s one you can forego with this Cube thanks to the Gates Belt Drive transmission.

Compared to a chain, it’s a clean and quiet way to feed motion to the Shimano Alfine 8-speed hub gear.

The Shimano M315 hydraulic disc brakes fitted to this model are hard to fault with plenty of control and power whatever the weather (and two heavily loaded panniers in place).

Cube Travel SL ride impressions

For a bike of this kind, the Cube is entertaining to ride and its relative lack of weight means it feels surprisingly spritely too.

The frame and fork are particularly stiff, so if you’re travelling without additional weight then you’ll probably want to take the tyres down to their minimum pressure. In my experience that’s perfectly fine to do thanks to the excellent puncture resistance of Schwalbe’s Marathon Supreme tyres .

Compared to a regular chain, the Gates belt does leave a feel of slight elasticity under foot. Combine this with the sometimes clunky nature of the Alfine hub gear and you’ve got a transmission that takes some getting used to. I thought the gear range offered from its eight ratios suited the bike well.

I did have to re-tension the drive belt every few hundred miles after it began to slip under high torque situations. Similarly, the shifter for the Shimano Alfine hub gear required frequent tension adjustments to optimise shift quality.

Both of these jobs will be no problem for most home mechanics and actually formed the only routine maintenance this bike required over many hundreds of miles.

The SKS mudguards did a brilliant job of keeping me dry but were sometimes prone to annoying vibration, which is something made significantly more noticeable on a bike as quiet as this one.

The dynamo lights aren’t going to win any records for their output, but they do a decent job considering their size and they hold power for long enough to keep you illuminated while paused at red lights. Still, anyone riding at night should only use these alongside more powerful lights, in my opinion.

The Travel SL is ready to reliably take you wherever you desire and it's not often that bikes arrive this sorted out of the box. That means it's also top value. In fact, this bike is so good that you’ll probably take it for granted, I know I did.

The rules for Americans visiting Cuba in 2022

The Biden Administration took several steps toward thawing US-Cuba relations on May 16, 2022, after five years of tightened restrictions. While the measures don’t fully restore the openings of the Obama era, they mark an encouraging start for struggling Cubans and aspiring US travelers.

What has changed?

Of direct interest to US travelers is the Biden Administration’s promise to expand authorized travel in support of the Cuban people. This includes opening up flights to airports beyond Havana (which were closed to US aircraft during the Trump era) and reinstating group people-to-people travel and other categories of group educational travel. Both measures will be good news to US travel agencies who have battled with increased red tape since 2017.  

As yet, there is no word that the US will reinstate individual people-to-people travel, the category that led to a huge influx of US visitors to Cuba between 2016 and 2017. Nor have any Cuban state entities been removed from the US’s restricted list, meaning it’s still difficult for Americans to legally stay in Cuban hotels.

The directives have also lifted limits on family remittances (previously capped at $1,000 a quarter) to provide help in facilitating family reunions and supporting independent Cuban entrepreneurs.

Getting to Cuba from the US

Flying to Havana is one of the easier parts of the Cuba conundrum. As of May 2022, there are approximately a dozen flights a day between the US and Havana departing from the Florida cities of Miami, Tampa, and Fort Lauderdale. Operating airlines include American Airlines , Southwest Airlines , and JetBlue .

More Cuban airports will likely open up to US flights in the coming months.

The 12 categories of travel licenses for US citizens

US law states that US citizens can only travel to Cuba on a ‘general license’ based on one of 12 different approved categories , which include family visits, educational and religious activities, public performances and exhibitions, and the vague sounding 'support for the Cuban people.' Licenses are self-qualifying (there’s no long-winded paperwork), but you’ll be asked to state your category of choice in a signed travel affidavit when booking travel to Cuba. More details are available online from the US Treasury .

The vast majority of current visitors are Cuban Americans entering under the ‘family travel’ category. Independent travelers with no affiliations can qualify under the conveniently vague ‘support for the Cuban people’ category, which is the easiest option for people looking to explore the island. However, bear in mind that before you travel, you’ll need to draw up a detailed itinerary of your plans. Additionally, on your return, you’ll be required to keep all your travel receipts for five years.

The Cuba tourist card

To enter Cuba, all visitors need to present a completed Tourist Card — which serves a similar function to a tourist visa. These are usually available through your airline (ask when booking). Alternatively, you can purchase one through a Cuban travel agency. Costs range from US$50 to US$85, including processing fees.

Health protocols for travel to Cuba

Pre-travel COVID-19 tests and vaccination certificates are no longer required to enter Cuba from the US. Random COVID-19 tests may still be administered at the airport but there’s no mandatory quarantine unless you test positive. Departing US passengers will need a negative rapid-antigen test to re-enter the US. Tests can be procured at Havana’s José Martí International Airport before departure.

All arriving travelers must fill out an online D’Viajeros form containing information relating to public health and immigration.  You’re also required to take out medical insurance that includes cover for COVID-19; this may be included in the cost of your air ticket from the US. Health officials make spot checks at the airport.

Booking travel to Cuba through a travel agency

If it’s your first time traveling to Cuba, it is highly recommended that you enlist the services of a specialist US-Cuba travel agency. Both Cuban Travel Services and Marazul offer comprehensive on-the-ground information and can help organize flights and accommodation.

Alternatively, you can join an organized trip, which takes a lot of the hassle out of traveling to Cuba. Long-time US-Cuba specialists, Insight Cuba are offering a three-night ‘Weekend in Havana’ and a seven-night ‘Classic Cuba Tour’ in 2022.  

Where to stay in Cuba

American citizens are not currently allowed to stay in Cuba’s government-run hotels or use most state-owned enterprises. Instead, it’s best to opt for private accommodation such as apartments, B&Bs and homestays (known in Cuba as casas particulares ). Airbnb has lots of listings of accommodations that are open to US citizens.

For restaurants, stick to private paladares (family-run restaurants, often in the owner's home) where the food quality is better. To get around, use private guides and taxis. In doing so, you’ll be enthusiastically ‘supporting the Cuban people.’

Money tips for Cuba in 2022

Credit cards linked to US banks don’t work in Cuba and the US dollar was taken out of circulation in June 2021. American travelers are best off arriving with plenty of cash in a non-US currency – the euro is the most favored foreign currency and is accepted by most private businesses, from casa particulares to restaurants and taxi drivers, meaning you won’t have to buy many Cuban pesos (which are worthless outside Cuba).

Beware: The Cuban economy is in a state of extreme flux. The current euro-peso black market exchange rate is over four times that of the banks.   

In November 2021, Cuba introduced a tarjeta prepago (prepaid card) designed primarily to aid US travelers with American credit cards. You can purchase and pre-load a tarjeta prepago at a bank in Cuba or at the airport and use it to buy goods that can otherwise only be paid for with a credit card, such as medical services, cigars, and bus tickets. Cards can be loaded with amounts equivalent to US$1000, US$500 or US$200. However, you can only pay for the card in a non-US currency. Euros, Canadian dollars, and pounds sterling are all accepted, cash only.

After months of testing 17 pieces of Béis luggage and other accessories in both the Travel + Leisure lab and our real-world travels, we can confidently recommend these nine items for anyone looking to invest in Béis travel products. While we’re big fans of the brand's suitcases, we also love the weekender and duffel bags, cosmetic cases, and packing cubes for staying extra organized on the go.

It’s easy to pack thanks to all of the organizational features.

The handle can get stuck if the bag is dented a certain way. 

Both minimalist and maximalist packers alike will appreciate the simple and spacious design of the Béis Carry-on Roller. Whether packing for a weekend or week-long trip, the clamshell suitcase has a removable compression system with a mesh pocket on one side, while the other features two zippered pockets on the opening flap for storing undergarments or smaller pieces of clothing. The various pockets and separate compartments makes it intuitive and hassle-free to pack bulky and small items, and the suitcase isn’t so big that it’ll get too heavy to wheel or pick up. After traveling with this bag over a six-month period, we love that it's incredibly durable. The wheels roll well on concrete, grass, and gravel and have held up well throughout our many travels. Other thoughtful features we love include the padded handle, expandable zippers, weight limit indicator, and retractable bag strap for attaching another suitcase or smaller bag. We recommend avoiding checking in this carry-on when possible since it scuffed and dented fairly easily during testing.

After six months of use, the lighter color does show some significant scuffing.

We’re big fans of the just-right size of the Béis 26-inch checked roller bag. It’s big enough to fit up to two weeks’ worth of clothing, but the medium size is better for maneuvering it on the go or storing it at home than even larger sizes. Throughout six months of testing, we loved the smooth wheels that make navigating through airports easy and seamless. The organizational features are similar to the brand’s carry-on suitcase, with a detachable compression flap and various zippered pockets for packing smaller items. If you need extra room for longer trips, the suitcase has expandable zippers that add an extra two inches of space. Worried about the weight of the suitcase? There is a helpful weight limit indicator on the side of the suitcase that will turn red when the bag is over 50 pounds so you’ll never run the risk of overweight baggage fees. During lab testing, the polycarbonate material scuffed and dented with rough handling, so if you want to avoid noticeable scratches, consider opting for one of the darker colors offered.

It's difficult to fit under plane seats, so you'll have to place it in the overhead bin.

The Béis Weekender bag is one of the brand's best-selling items and we understand why after testing. It wowed us with a spacious interior that could fit more than enough for a weekend away, especially with the separate compartment on the bottom of the bag. The detachable compartment is perfect for bulky items like shoes and jackets, or you can remove it entirely to make the bag more compact. After using this for six months, its durability has not changed and we're calling this our "Mary Poppins bag" because it fits so many items.

Business travelers will appreciate that the bag comes with a vegan leather laptop case and designated laptop pocket to safely store technology while traveling. Similar to the Sport Duffel, this Béis bag comes with a removable strap so you can carry it as a tote or duffel bag for a convertible design. We also love that the weekender has a structured build to stand up on its own while packing it and there are metal feet at the bottom to protect the bag from the floor (although we did notice the metal feet scratched a bit in testing).

This high-quality duffel is durable, comfortable to carry, and features more pockets than you'll know what to do with. It was made with so much obvious attention to detail that's perfect for any traveler from weekend adventurers to business travelers . The duffel is a lot more spacious than it first appears as it easily fits our four-day packing list thanks to the many compartments (six on the inside, and four on the outside of the bag). Throughout our tests, we noticed that every pocket is multi-functional and purposeful — the side of the bag even features a pocket with a zippered bottom that can be opened to double as a luggage sleeve. The duffel is also comfortable to carry and all of the zippers glide easily making this one of our absolute favorite personal items, weekender bags, overnight bag, and more.

We think the straps could be more size-inclusive. 

Versatility in a piece of luggage is super important, so we love that the sport duffel has a convertible design to carry it in multiple ways. It has handles to carry it as a tote, and it comes with a removable crossbody strap to toss it over the shoulder like a traditional duffel. We love the discrete backpack straps that are tucked away in a pocket on the bottom of the duffel to be fully hidden when not in use. No matter which way we carried the duffel, it was comfortable and convenient with the weight distributed across all the straps. The only downside we ran into is the crossbody strap doesn’t adjust to a long length to accommodate all body types. Still, after six months of using this bag multiple times a week, we found this to be one of the most convenient, innovative, and intuitive bags we tested — and it still looks brand new. While the bag appears to be small, it can fit enough clothes for a weekend getaway and it has impressive organizational features for packing various items. It also comes with a drawstring bag for dirty clothes, which is a thoughtful feature for travelers and gym-goers alike.

A reliable makeup case is a must-have for traveling, especially since beauty products can be costly and difficult to replace while traveling. The brand’s cosmetic case earned a perfect score during testing thanks to its sleek and structured design that safeguards toiletries whether packed in a carry-on or checked bag. It has room to fit all of the makeup essentials, including foundation bottles, eyeshadow palettes, mascara, and toiletries like mini shampoo and toothpaste. Arguably, the best part of this case is that it comes with a removable standing travel mirror so you can turn any small space into a vanity. 

We love the removable brush holder with straps and a clear plastic window to hold down makeup brushes and protect the bristles from bending. While no makeup got damaged during testing, we think there could be a few more straps or dividers in the spacious main compartment to tie down bottles or palettes more securely. However, if there is some spillage while traveling, the interior is lined with a fully wipeable fabric for hassle-free clean-up.

It’s a little too bulky to pack in smaller luggage.

Counter space can be hard to come by when you’re traveling, so a travel hanging organizer can really come in handy. The stiff exterior material protects the makeup, and we didn’t notice any damage when we rigorously shook, tossed, and threw the case across the room. Our only gripe with the makeup case is that it’s very large so it will take up a lot of space in a small carry-on or weekender bag. However, the case comes with a clear zippered pouch that you can remove from the middle compartment to use as a mini cosmetic pouch for shorter trips.

The cubes are better for organization than saving space.

We wish the zipper opened up all the way for easier packing. 

This backpack is a game-changer for avoiding extra baggage fees if you buy too many souvenirs while traveling. With the ability to add an extra two inches in depth, the expandable gusset provides enough space to pack enough clothes for an overnight trip or short weekend getaway. However, if you’re looking to use the backpack as a personal item for flying, the backpack offers pockets for every carry-on essential you could ever need. It has a designated padded laptop pocket to store both 13- and 15-inch laptops that can be conveniently accessed from the separate pocket in the back. After carrying the backpack in an airport for several hours, we didn’t notice any pain or discomfort thanks to the adjustable padded straps and back panel that balance the weight for all-day comfort. And after six months of regular use, the bag still looks good as new.

Other Béis Travel Products We Liked

We’ve tried nearly everything from Béis, but not everything could make our list of winners due to slight issues revealed in testing. 

Béis The Jewelry Case : The structured design is super protective, but the button closure isn’t very secure, so it came undone and the jewelry fell out when we dropped it on the floor.

Béis The Convertible Weekender : We’re big fans of the separate bottom compartment that you can completely remove, but tricky zippers make it hard to get it back onto the bag. We prefer the regular Weekender above.

Béis The Backpack : This backpack lacked padding for protection and comfort, but we like the simplicity of the design and useful pockets for laptops, chargers, and wallets. 

Our T+L editors have tested hundreds of pieces of luggage and to try every item efficiently, we divide up the tests by category to evaluate in our labs and while traveling out in the world. We tested a total of 17 Béis travel products, including suitcases, backpacks, weekenders, and accessories like jewelry cases, packing cubes, and cosmetic bags. 

To test suitcases, we first start in our lab utilizing our specially-designed airplane set complete with row of passenger seats and overhead storage bins to analyze the capacity, design, and maneuverability. We test the durability by taking a baseball bat to each bag and throwing it off a counter. Similarly for backpacks and weekenders, we pack the bags full of travel essentials to get a feel for the capacity, design, and portability. For bags that aren’t suitcases, we pay close attention to comfort and portability since those are two very important factors in buying a travel bag that gets schlepped around.

For accessories like jewelry cases, cosmetic bags, and packing cubes, we pack them with relevant travel items and test durability by dropping, tossing, and throwing the items (but to the dismay of our editors, no baseball bats are involved). All of the products we test in the lab are sent out for up to six months of further testing in real-world conditions. 

Tips for Buying Béis Travel Products

Know how much space you need.

While it depends on the product, Béis has luggage and accessories in all types of sizes to fit the needs of all travelers. When it comes to luggage, the carry-ons and checked bags have expandable zippers so you can add two inches of space when desired. The weekender bag is massive, so if you’re looking for something more compact, opt for the mini or convertible weekend, or the duffel bags. The accessories are pretty straightforward with sizing since there is only one of each, except for the hanging cosmetic case, which is a bit bigger than the regular cosmetic bag, and the cosmetic bag set, which are the smallest sizes offered for storage pouches.

Evaluate organizational features

Throwing everything in one large bag or suitcase tends to result in, well, an organizational disaster once you get to your hotel room and need to find something. Instead look for organizational features that’ll best suit your needs. Béis luggage pieces tend to do double duty: a carry-on duffel or weekender has compartments suitable to work as a gym bag, and the backpack can also work as a catch-all for heading into the office thanks to its tech-specific compartments. Finland will change its legislation to allow thousands of reservists to patrol the country's border with Russia, should there be a sudden wave of migrants. 

"With the changed security situation, we need to complement existing methods with new ways to maintain border security," defence minister Antti Hakkanen said in a statement.

Finland, which joined NATO in April last year, has accused Moscow of weaponising migration against the Nordic nation, which the Kremlin denies. 

Finland shut its 1,340km-long border with Russia late last year amid a growing number of arrivals from countries such as Syria and Somalia via Russia.

Away from Kharkiv, and Ukraine has denied Russian claims of progress in the Zaporizhzhia region. 

The Ukrainian military dismissed reports that Moscow's forces had taken control of the village of Robotyne in the southern part of the region. 

"This information is not true," military spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk was quoted by Ukrinform agency as saying.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned the assassination attempt on Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico. 

Russia's offensive in northern Kharkiv has been the focus of much of the reporting on the war in Ukraine over recent days.

Sky News military analyst Michael Clarke has said the aim of Moscow is to draw Ukraine's forces to that area from the south, thus stretching the country's military resources.

And the latest analysis from US thinktank the Institute for the Study of War suggests that the pace of the offensive "appears to have slowed over the past 24 hours".

The group's experts said the pattern of Russian offensive activity in the area was consistent with assessments that Vladimir Putin's forces are prioritising the creation of a "buffer zone" in the international border area over a deeper penetration of Kharkiv Oblast.

It said several Ukrainian military officials reported yesterday that they believed the situation in Kharkiv Oblast was slowly stabilising.

"Drone footage purportedly from Vovchansk shows Russian foot mobile infantry operating within the settlement in small squad-sized assault groups, consistent with Ukrainian reports," the analysis added.

Two people have been killed after a Russian air attack on infrastructure in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, the regional governor has said.

Serhiy Lysak said on  Telegram that there were a number of people who had been injured, but gave no other details.

Dnipro is Ukraine's fourth-largest city, it sits on the Dnipro River  and is around 300 miles from Kyiv.

Within the last hour, the UK's House of Commons addressed an urgent question on "Russia's aggression relating to Ukraine and the situation in Georgia".

Ukraine has come under vast assault from Russia in recent days, while in Georgia there have been riots as Russia asserted its influence to see a controversial "foreign agents" law passed.

The question was tabled by Jim Shannon, a Democratic Unionist Party politician, and answering on behalf of the government was armed forces minister Leo Docherty.

He noted today was "day 811 of Putin's 'special military operation' - an operation that was supposed to last three days, and he has failed in all his objectives".

But the minister went on to say the conflict was "evolving", and confirmed Russia's latest assault on the Kharkiv region, which was "almost certainly" a bid to "divert Ukrainian resources away from other parts of the front line and to threaten Kharkiv - the second-largest city in Ukraine".

He declared the UK would "not be diverted from our commitment to provide Ukraine with the support they need to prevail", pointing to the vast package announced in January and ongoing efforts to support the Ukrainian military.

Turning to Georgia, the minister said the government was observing events "with concern".

"The United Kingdom, along with our partners, is of course committed to the right of peaceful protest, as we are concerned by the introduction of the law" on foreign influence, he said.

He added that the UK was "a close friend of Georgia" and called for "calm and restraint on all sides".

Vladimir Putin has said Russian troops in Ukraine are "improving positions in all directions every day" and Moscow's military offensive in the country is "going to plan". 

The Russian leaders comments come moments after the Ukrainian military claimed to have "partially pushed back" Russian forces in the town of Vovchansk in the Kharkiv region.

Moscow begun a pressing offensive on the Kharkiv region on Friday, after weeks of speculation that Russia was preparing to establish a new frontline there.

The towns of Vovchansk and Lyptsi appear to be the focus of the offensive, the latter of which could provide Russia with an opportunity to put Kharkiv under an artillery barrage, if captured.

Ukraine's forces have "partially pushed back" Russian troops from the town of Vovchansk in the Kharkiv region, the Ukrainian military has said.

In an update on the battlefield situation, the military said a total of 18 Russian assaults were repelled as active combat clashes rage on in north and northwestern parts of the town.

Our  military analyst,  Michael Clarke ,  said Ukraine was able to push back Russian advances by redirecting troops from military units in the south.

"Parts of their best brigades have been sent north to stem the tide," he said.

Earlier, the head of the Ukrainian police force in the Kharkiv region described the situation in the town of Vovchansk as "extremely difficult". 

Oleksiy Kharkivskiy, Vovchansk's patrol police chief, said Russian forces were establishing positions inside the town. 

With a second front opening in the war and Russia claiming control of several settlements, it's been an important week for the war in Ukraine.

Given the impressive success of Ukraine to contain the operational degrees of freedom of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, why hasn't the West supplied the Ukrainian navy with ships in order to consolidate its dominance and pose a serious new challenge to the Russian army?

Military analyst Sean Bell had this to say...

Thank you for this interesting question.

At the start of the Russian ground offensive the Ukrainians scuttled their remaining naval warships to stop them falling into the hands of the Russia invaders. 

However, since then the Ukrainians have proven very effective at using naval drones to target Russian Black Sea Fleet (BSF) vessels, forcing the remainder of the Russian naval forces to move east for their own protection.

This Ukrainian operational success has limited Russia's ability to conduct an amphibious assault against the Ukrainian port of Odessa, and has also provided vital freedom of movement on the western edge of the Black Sea to enable Ukraine to continue exporting its grain and provide vital revenues to help fund its war effort.

Late last year the UK Ministry of Defence announced that two Royal Navy minehunter ships were to be transferred from the Royal Navy to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in a move to strengthen Ukraine's ability to operate at sea.  

As the UK and Norway launched a new Maritime Capability Coalition, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps announced the procurement of two Sandown Class mine countermeasures vessels (MCMVs) by Ukraine through UK export finance.

Strengthening the Ukraine's maritime capabilities, in particular countering the threat from Russian sea mines, was expected to help restore Ukraine's maritime exports.

However, the only maritime access route into the Black Sea is through the Bosphorus straits, and that is controlled by Turkey. 

Under the terms of the Montreux Convention of 1936 - which is still in place -  the straits are treated as an international shipping lane, except that Turkey has the power to restrict warships' access to the Black Sea.  

This restriction applies to warships from any country, whether or not they border the Black Sea, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.  

As a result, although the UK was prepared to bolster Ukraine's maritime capability in the near term, the Maritime Capability Coalition will be primarily focused on helping Ukraine rebuild its military maritime capability once the current hostilities have ended.  

The international community retains the ability to donate maritime capabilities that are land (or air) transportable, but for now that will not include the UK Naval Minehunters that can only be delivered once access to the Black Sea is re-opened.

Antony Blinken has said the US remains "deeply concerned" about China's support for Russia's industrial defence base. 

The US secretary of state told a news conference in Kyiv that China has so far held back from providing weapons to Russia, but it will continue to sanction against any enterprises that are involved in support for Moscow. 

It comes a day ahead of Vladimir Putin's visit to Beijing, where he is keen to show he is suppotred by his most powerful political partner, Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Mt Putin's two-day visit is expected to highlight the pair's vaunted "no limits" partnership in defiance from pressure from the US over its invasion of Ukraine. 

Late last month Mr Blinken was in China where he warned top diplomat Wang Yi against deepening military support for Russia.
