Ezra Furman Announces New 2022 North American Tour Dates
Sex education - songs from season 3 out now via ice chest musick.
Ezra Furman has announced some new 2022 North American tour dates. They mainly go down next March and May and go on sale tomorrow at noon EST. Check them all out below.
Furman had this to say in a press release statement:
“IT IS HAPPENING IT IS FINALLY HAPPENING WE ARE GOING ON TOUR AGAIN
“February 27th 2020 in Los Angeles. That was the last time. Playing with my amazing band. For me, it was an unforgettable night already, in that we ended an ecstatically fired-up tour of the Western US supporting our furious punk record Twelve Nudes, and that I got to sing the Replacements’ ‘I Will Dare’ with the brilliant Kelley Stoltz garage rock group. But we all know what happened next. COVID-19 hit hard and all shows were canceled for a million billion weeks.
“We have all been through a lot since then. We’ve been laying low but I personally have been tending the flame of musical passion that still very much burns in me, waiting for the day I could once again join it with that of my associates and use the resultant torch to start fires in public.
“Now our plans can begin to be told. We are hitting the road, that sweet cruel mistress of yesteryear, in March 2022 for what will be our first shows in over two years. Obviously we will be safe and careful with everyone’s health. And obviously we will not hold back the realness. We are going to give you the shows you deserve, that you’ve deserved all along. Fire in the bloodstream. Pour gasoline on the embers.
“More cool information to come soon. Right now, I’m just really, really enjoying having this tour in our near future. Hope to see you there. - E. Furman”
Back in September Furman surprise released a new EP that features songs she has written for season 3 of the Netflix show Sex Education . It’s fittingly titled Sex Education - Songs from Season 3 and features three new songs, alongside two songs previously released with her former band Ezra Furman & The Harpoons in 2011. The EP is out now via Furman’s own Ice Chest Musick label. Furman has done the music for all three seasons.
Last year, Furman shared the official soundtrack for seasons 1 and 2 of Sex Education , along with a video for the song “ Every Feeling .”

ALBUM REVIEW: Ezra Furman’s All Of Us Flames is the New Modern American Rock
Singer-songwriter Ezra Furman has been creating rock and roll tunes since 2008, originally being a part of Ezra Furman and the Harpoons before moving on to sing solo. Furman has achieved critical acclaim and worldwide recognition after recording the soundtrack for the hit Netflix original series Sex Education , but her work extends past the tracks written for the show. On August 26, 2022, she released her sixth studio album All Of Us Flames , under ANTI- Records, a collection of modern American rock songs that are a sign of a new age of the genre.
All Of Us Flames takes us on a trip with the opening song “Train Comes Through”, the track our mode of transportation into the rest of the album. Furman’s ingenious songwriting shines through immediately as we hear something reminiscent of an opening speech before a revolution. She then channels more punk-rock sounds in the next song “Throne” which keeps the chanting, mantra-like theme.
The third song, “Dressed In Black” is classic Ezra Furman: heavy guitar notes, stunning lyrics, and beats that sound like a song from the 70s. She sings a coming-of-age melody in “And your lips don’t move, but I can hear you talk to me/ And I watch your haunted eyes/ As they look out at the world/ The world that never cared at all for us.”
For decades, rock and roll has been used as a way for artists to speak their truth and fight for change, and that’s no better seen than in songs like “Book Of Our Names” and “Lilac And Black”. In the former, Furman takes a look at the relationship between Judaism and trans people. In a tweet, she wrote, “I noticed that the book of the Bible called Exodus in English, the one where the Hebrews escape slavery in Egypt, is called the Book of Names in Hebrew. And I started to think that the act of saying names out loud, of seeing individuals in their full irreplaceable uniqueness, holds the seed of true liberation.” The song “Lilac And Black” can only be described as a queer anthem, an honest look at Ezra’s life as a trans woman in the world. “Tonight, tonight I’m dreaming of my queer girl gang/ We who walk this deadly path/ And the city that tries to kill us each night.”
“Ally Sheedy in the Breakfast Club”, the eighth piece on the 12-track album, is a direct reference to one of the characters in The Breakfast Club , but in a way never before heard. Furman sings a simple song, with a slow guitar strum, about connecting to the character and longing to be her: “I watch her flicker on my TV/ The teenage girl I never got to be.” Things speed up though in the following song, “Poor Girl A Long Way From Heaven”, which still showcases her glorious writing while managing to sound like something that would play during a party montage scene in a movie.
All Of Us Flames closes with “Come Close”, a soft, reflective end that’s a look back on Furman’s possible former loves, and her resounding message that there’s still work to be done to support the queer community. “The desperate ones don’t disappear/ We’re all still hanging around/ And what do your rainbows do? What do your bright flags do? What do your rainbows do here on the ground?”
Ezra Furman’s new album is nothing short but a new wave of Americana; a complete collection of songs reminiscent to those of Bob Dylan, but written to represent our modern age and shed light on the important battles we need to take part in. To celebrate her new protest album, Furman is going on tour in both North America and Europe, spreading love and acceptance everywhere she goes.

NEWS: Ezra Furman announces new album ‘All Of Us Flames’ out via Bella Union
The scene: December, 2021. Drizzly grey evenings. Doom. Covid. Bleurgh. Something really compelling started to be transmitted into my living room one evening. A change to the normal programming on BBC Radio 6 Music. Ezra Furman , an artist I’d long admired was standing in for Marc Riley . I had no idea what delights I was in for. These were to be my favourite radio shows of all time. Her mix of personal anecdotes, especially of her close musical community, her command of pop music history and the plain fact that the mix of music selected just happened to align perfectly with my own taste was nothing short of captivating. I listened every night and bemoaned the second she was off air. Marc Riley – we appreciate everything you do, but Furman needs her own show yesterday.
Luckily, she has been using the rest of her time doing what she does best and creating the music that we all love her for – the career in which has brought her the depth of knowledge and passion that made those radio shows so incredible.
The new record All Of Us Flames comes out 26th August via Bella Union, and unveils the cathartic lead single, “ Forever In Sunset ”. Produced by John Congleton ( Girl in Red – Who also has a new video out, St. Vincent , Swans , Okkervil River ), All of Us Flames unleashes Furman’s songwriting in an open, vivid sound whose boldness heightens the music’s urgency.
All of Us Flames is the third instalment in a trilogy of albums, beginning with 2018’s Springsteen-inflected road saga Transangelic Exodus and continuing with the punk rock fury of 2019’s Twelve Nudes .
Furman has a knack for zeroing in on the light that sparks when struggling people find each other and ease each other’s course. “ I started to think of trans women as a secret society across the world: scattered everywhere, but so obviously bound together, both in being vulnerable and having a shared vision to change a fundamental building block of patriarchal society, ” she says. “I ‘ve been building my world of queer pals, and it feels like we’re forming a gang .”
Much of the album was written during the first lockdown of the pandemic and it was this “gang” that informed Furman’s experience of that time. We were all realising a lot more about how the communities around us really could function, needed to function. A friend of Furman’s who stayed with her during this time talked of a sense of strange readiness she felt for this chaos: “ we queers know what to do: we take care of each other, we help each other out, we have a network of support for the crises we know will hit us from time to time. ” Furman said her house was a sanctuary of sorts for her friends at this time and so she found herself needing to take long drives to seek solitude. She would park in arbitrary quiet spots around Massachusetts, and began to write this new album. The songs that came flowed toward ideas of communality and networks of care, systems of survival cultivated by necessity among people who have been historically deprived of them. “ This is a first person plural album ,” Furman says. “ It’s a queer album for the stage of life when you start to understand that you are not a lone wolf, but depend on finding your family, your people, how you work as part of a larger whole. I wanted to make songs for use by threatened communities, and particularly the ones I belong to: trans people and Jews .” With Furman’s widened focus, All of Us Flames paints transformative connections among people who unsettle the stories power tells to sustain itself.
Following previous singles “ Book Of Our Names ” and “ Point Me Toward The Real ”, “ Forever In Sunset ” peers past the scorch of the apocalypse into a vision of collective survival, tracing the ways outcast people can make each other real through mutual belief – “ people who have been through a personal apocalypse or two have something to teach them. The world doesn’t end, shit just happens and if we don’t die we have to take care of each other.” – Ezra Furman on “Forever In Sunset” . The synth-streaked rallying call is presented alongside a gorgeous and tender video directed by Noel Paul ( Bat for Lashes , Father John Misty )

Ezra Furman
Ezra Furman (Pronouns – she/they/her/them)
Through 5 critically acclaimed solo albums, 3 albums with her former band the Harpoons as well as creating the original soundtrack for the hit Netflix Original Series ‘Sex Education’, Ezra Furman has amassed an arsenal of much-loved music.
Exploring themes of identity, religion, political angst, love, anxiety, Furman has become an icon for the misunderstood and the oppressed. Her live show has built a fierce reputation with The Guardian dubbing her “the most compelling live act you can see right now”.
Furman has also written a book on Lou Reed’s classic album ‘Transformer’ and the relationship the record has with her own life and awakening as part of the 33 1/3 Series.
Ezra Furman tells us about her Top Five Records of 2022
Brooklyn vegan december 12, 2022.
“As is widely known, I have the correct music taste,” Ezra Furman says, tongue perhaps in cheek, in presenting us with her list of favorite music of 2022. “Other people are in error. For example, the number one album of 2022 seems to be something called Mind-Nights by Tailor Swift. The most talked-about artist of the year is Conye West, who very clearly said ‘slavery was a choice’ in 2018, giving decent people reason to ignore him forever, and yet he is still selling lots of records and commanding the public eye. Meanwhile the transgender rock’n’roll artists creating the great classics of our era (Alex Walton, Asher White, Harmony’s Cuddle Party) go mostly unheard and unheralded.”
Ezra Furman: ‘I want trans people to know there’s a fighting chance’
I november 11, 2022.
“Furman, the artist hailing from Chicago, Illinois, has become defined by her directness. Her music tackles queerness and transness, as well as notions of young romance and mental health, often from the perspective of ripe anger and frustration”
“We’re Doing Zoom Therapy”: Ezra Furman, in Conversation with Sarah Silverman
Interview magazine october 20, 2022.
“In All of Us Flames, Ezra Furman pens a record for the apocalypse, but it’s not at all hopeless. This apparent contradiction becomes slightly less mysterious when you consider the circumstances in which the album was made. All of Us Flames was written almost entirely during lockdown, when Furman was raising a young child and beginning to embrace her identity as a trans woman. The result is a powerful meditation on finding community in the face of solitude, with melodies that are at once morose and euphoric, all anchored by Furman’s silvery vocals. Her unique brand of intellectual but deeply-felt art-rock has won her devout fans, including comedy legend Sarah Silverman, who called Furman to chat about Judaism, baby jokes, and the overlap between comedy and music.”
Ezra Furman on her latest ‘All Of Us Flames’
Npr september 3, 2022.
SIMON: We mentioned you wrote these songs during the early pandemic, and I gather your house was very full at that time, right?
FURMAN: It was a bit full. It was me and my gay wife and our 1-year-old. And then our friend just had a shaky kind of housing situation, and she moved into our living room for months. And then also we had this terrible landlord who lived right upstairs from us who was – well, he was prejudiced, you know? He was not happy that I was transgender when we moved in. So there was a lot of love in our house. And then there was this, like, overhang of transphobia.
Ezra Furman All of Us Flames
Northern transmissions august 30, 2022.
Ezra Furman has seemingly spent her last two albums in constant motion. She first traced a collection of Springsteen-esque stories of escape and romance songs with 2018’s Transangelic Exodus, then quickly offered up an incendiary punk paen to rage and fury with 2019’s Twelve Nudes. Her songs have often felt restless and nervy, finding her searching for peace and comfort amidst a hostile world that doesn’t want Furman or the people she loves to exist.

It’s rare nowadays to find sincere protest music worth listening to. Even those elite artists who do make legitimately radical statements in their songs — Downtown Boys, Moor Mother, Special Interest, et al. — mix their full-throated activism with experiments in form. But on her recent single “Book Of Our Names,” Ezra Furman takes a direct swing at capitalism in the style of the earnest folk rockers who shook the structures of power over half a century ago.

In terms of both the joyful force it exudes and the restrictive forces imposed upon it, femininity is inherently violent. Going back to the earliest examples of mythology, you can usually find some reference to an orderly, masculine representation of the sun, serving as a foil to the chaos of the moon that forcibly bends the tides and weather to its will under the cover of night.

The full range and complicated range of human emotions has always been part of Furman’s creativity — especially anger, which was mined extensively in Furman’s last album, 2019’s punk blowout Twelve Nudes. Before that was 2018’s Transangelic Exodus, an album that constantly felt like its music had been set ablaze in honor of the agony and ecstasy of queerness, as well as to process the understanding that “sometimes you go through hell, but you never get to Heaven.”

All Of Us Flames (ANTI-) is Ezra’s ninth full-length release, collaborative and solo, and possibly the most realized work to date.

1. Ezra Furman: “Point Me Toward the Real” Ezra Furman has signed to ANTI- and on Tuesday shared her first single for the label, “Point Me Toward the Real.” She also announced some new North American tour dates. The horn-backed “Point Me Toward the Real” is about someone getting out of a psychiatric hospital. Furman’s lyrics paint a truly vivid picture.

This is one of those records that’s as naked as it can be in emotional terms, and yet still wildly enjoyable and tuneful as well. All of Us Flames, the new one from Ezra Furman, reveals the artist reaching a kind of peak here. The ANTI- / Bella Union release stands above and beyond so much of what’s come out this summer, showcasing a kind of serious rock, that’s still full of the sort of pleasures as the best classic rock or glam.

Ezra Furman appears to be in a constant state of escape. Her brand of soulful punk rock could be described as road music, with lyrics largely preoccupied with finding respite from a hostile world.

When the world was grappling with the anxiety and surreality of Covid in 2020, musician Ezra Furman also had to deal with being locked down with an openly transphobic landlord. “We did not conceal this at all, but he was like, ‘You didn’t tell me that you are trans’ and he was mad at us all the time and undermining,” Furman says solemnly over Zoom from Boston, wearing a pretty scooped-neck top, her hair cut in a bob. It didn’t help that the landlord lived upstairs. “It was just a horrible place to live.”

If it's too loud... august 10, 2022.
There is no artist out there making music quite like Ezra Furman is. Her latest single, “Poor Girl a Long Way From Heaven,” Furman takes her trademark unique blend of indie rock and pop and injects a little bit of gospel or spiritual music into it. Furman’s music combines a vibe that is hers and hers alone with sounds that are almost familiar.

Ezra Furman Shares Video For New Single “Poor Girl A Long Way From Heaven”
Under the radar august 9, 2022.
In a press release, Furman elaborates on the new single: “The spiritual life ain’t all pious platitudes. This song is about how weird it gets, when you’re in love with the Source of Being and She’s not texting you back. Ever since it hit me that I was never going to be loved and accepted on the scale of my pop star heroes, me and my bandmates have started to work on a different vision of pop, one more our own, one that gestures at the stranger truths of the human mind. Here we are in thrall to verbally adventurous nineties music like Bjork and Beck and the Silver Jews and them kinda non-linear geniuses.”

Ezra Furman – “Lilac and Black”
If it's too loud... july 13, 2022.
The latest from Ezra Furman is what we’ve come to expect from the artist. “Lilac and Black” is a virtually genre-less song that borrows from many different styles while sounding entirely unique. There are elements of folk, pop, dance, punk, and all the multi-hyphenate genres in between, but it doesn’t truly sound like any of those.

Love Nazareth! Please do a tour date in Chicago, Illinois soon! My husband and I would love to buy tickets to see you! Nazareth is one of our favorite bands!
I loved every second of it. Small venues are always the best, because you can get closer and almost feel like you are in the show rather just watching it.
Great band, great energy and even banter. Totally recommend them
