Getting to the South Coast

When the journey matters as much as the destination, make it a priority to take the 140km Grand Pacific Drive route from Sydney toward the unspoilt NSW South Coast . This is one of the world’s greatest road trips, skirting secluded bays, weaving across windswept cliffs, cutting through Australia’s oldest national park and snaking over the Pacific Ocean – get ready to be dazzled by the engineering feat that is the 665m Sea Cliff Bridge .

Much of the coast is easily accessible for day trips and weekend getaways, with balmy weather making it a year-round destination. But if you’re looking to linger, the region extends all the way down to the Victorian border. Yes, driving is convenient, but the area is also accessible via train, bus and plane.

Driving from Sydney

Part of the legendary Sydney to Melbourne Coastal Drive , the Grand Pacific Drive begins in the Royal National Park , south of Sydney. After passing  Stanwell Park  then traversing that bridge, the route hugs the  Illawarra Escarpment  toward the city of  Wollongong . From here, it’s one pretty beach and laid-back town after another, with geological wonders and wildlife in between.

Pass through (or linger in)  Albion Park ,  Shellharbour ,  Kiama ,  Gerringong  and  Berry , before travelling on to  Nowra , near the white-sand beaches and dolphins of  Jervis Bay . From here, the South Coast continues all the way down to Eden, close to the Victorian border.

Driving from Melbourne or Canberra

Not far south of Jervis Bay, at the centre of the South Coast, Batemans Bay is a four-hour drive from Sydney – but just two hours from Canberra. The drive north from Melbourne over the border to  Eden , one of Australia’s best whale watching spots, takes a little over six hours. From Canberra, it’s three hours to Eden via  Merimbula  and  Pambula .

Train and bus

The region is also accessible via train, with regular services departing Sydney's Central Station. Alight at any of the charming seaside towns along the way, including Stanwell Park, Scarborough , Austinmer ,  Thirroul ,  Bulli , Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Gerringong and Berry. Bomaderry , near Nowra, is the last stop on the line. Buses also depart Sydney and Canberra for popular seaside destinations.

Fly to the South Coast

There are a number of airports dotted along the South Coast, so you can fly in and hire a car to explore the region. Shellharbour Airport is in Albion Park and close to Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama. Link Airways operates regular direct flights from Melbourne and Brisbane.

Another option is to fly to the far South Coast. With Regional Express , you can fly from Sydney to  Moruya in the heart of the Eurobodalla region. It’s a 20min drive from Batemans Ba and a 40min drive from  Narooma . To get to the sparkling Sapphire Coast, Qantas flies direct between Sydney and Merimbula . Regional Express flies from Sydney to Merimbula via Moruya and flies direct between Melbourne and Merimbula.

South Coast Rail

Connecting Boston and Southeastern Massachusetts

The South Coast Rail project will restore commuter rail service between Boston and southeastern Massachusetts. Taunton, Fall River and New Bedford are the only major cities within 50 miles of Boston that do not currently have commuter rail access to Boston. South Coast Rail will reconnect this region to jobs and generate economic development.

South Coast Rail

Editor's Note:  This is an excerpt from WBUR's daily morning newsletter, WBUR Today. If you like what you read and want it in your inbox,  sign up here .

It’s Monday, and the federal government  is still running after all.  However, in the wake of the stopgap funding bill, a new fight has emerged for the Massachusetts delegation in Washington, D.C.

More on that below, but first let’s run through some local news:

Another big MBTA project delayed:  South Coast residents will have to wait until at least next summer for the T to come to town. The MBTA had originally planned to begin service on  its new commuter rail branches to Fall River and New Bedford  by the end of this year (that remained the goal  as recently as this past August , per officials). However, the MBTA now says service will begin in summer 2024. That could mean late June — or it could mean nearly a year from now.

  • What’s the hold up? It’s a similar story as the delays that  held up  the opening of the Green Line Extension: supply chain issues. South Coast Rail construction began during the pandemic. And while T officials say the work itself has gone well, they indicated it’s been bogged down by problems getting materials.
  • What’s left? During  a board meeting last week , T officials said construction on the Fall River Line is almost all done. But there’s still a good chunk of work left on the longer leg to New Bedford — particularly the new East Taunton station. They also need to run lots of conductor training and safety testing.
  • What’s the big deal? Fall River, New Bedford and Taunton are the only major cities within 60 miles of Boston without commuter rail service — at least  not since the late 1950s . South Coast Rail changes that. It’s also the first MBTA commuter rail expansion since the opening of the South Shore’s Greenbush Line in 2007.
  • Don’t get  too  excited: The full, one-way trip from New Bedford to South Station is expected to take 90 minutes, due to  the somewhat circuitous route taken in Phase 1 of the project . Eventually, the T plans to build a faster route through Stoughton and Raynham, but that “full build” won’t happen until the 2030s at the earliest.

All aboard the night train:  In related news, the  T’s new fall commuter rail schedule  takes effect today. As WBUR’s Andrea Perdomo-Hernandez reports, it includes more late-night trains out of Boston on both weekdays and weekends. For most lines, the last train of the night will leave around 11:45 p.m. or so — about 45-55 minutes later than it previously did. MBTA General Manager Phil Eng says the change is something many riders have been asking for.

  • The new schedules also add two more rush-hour trains on the Fitchburg, Franklin, Lowell and Worcester lines. You can  view all of the new schedules here .

RIP : Two-time World Series-winning Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield  died Sunday at the age of 57 , just days after former teammate Curt Schilling revealed (without permission) that the knuckleballer had brain cancer. The news broke while the Red Sox were playing their final game of the season yesterday, and tributes have been pouring in ever since from  old Red Sox  teammates  to  national late-night hosts  to both  the current  and  former governors .

  • While Wakefield may be most remembered for his  mesmerizing knuckleball , the eight-time Roberto Clemente Award nominee also leaves a legacy of  long-time charitable work off the field . Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Chief Philanthropy Officer Melany Duval said Sunday that Wakefield “always went the extra mile” as a leader of the Jimmy Fund. “He often visited our adult and pediatric floors, met our teen patients during their annual spring training trip, and was dedicated to helping us raise funds for cancer research and care. He will be missed.”

P.S.— One of the great things about WBUR and newsletters like this one is that it will  always  be free to anyone and everyone. Our community of Members make that possible, but we need more help. Train strikes in May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected this week

Rail lines are set for disruption in the week following the first May bank holiday as train drivers at 16 rail companies strike on different days.

Tuesday 7 May 2024 16:00, UK

south coast trains trip planner

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans this week, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern Railway, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

An underground train pulls into Leicester Square station in central London February 11, 2014. A planned 48-hour strike this week by staff on London's underground rail network which threatened to bring travel misery for millions has been suspended to allow further talks, unions said on Tuesday. REUTERS/Neil Hall (BRITAIN - Tags: POLITICS TRANSPORT BUSINESS EMPLOYMENT)

Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers refused to work overtime between 29 April and 5 May.

This action followed strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA union said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice" - something TfL denies, saying instead that the action "closed a handful of stations", with most closures "not lasting the whole day".

The TSSA says it is "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

A TfL spokesperson responded: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this dispute following a consultation process. While the action did not cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution. There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".

Officials cut ribbon on South Shore ‘double track' to streamline commute times

The project checked in at more than $600 million, but will significantly reduce commuting times, published may 13, 2024 • updated on may 13, 2024 at 5:41 pm.

The South Shore train line has a long history of taking commuters from downtown Chicago and into Northwest Indiana, but it’ll do so even faster thanks to improvements officially unveiled Monday.

The service, which originates at Millennium Station at the intersection of Randolph and Michigan Avenue and carries passengers all the way to South Bend, will bring the new service into action on Tuesday, and it’s welcome news for passengers as it will cut up to 30 minutes off of commute times into Indiana.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb, who rode the train for the first celebratory ride from Michigan City to Miller, praised the progress that the upgrades will allow along the line.

“On days like today you can feel it, it’s not just words, you can feel  the progress and the good that will come from it,” he said.

The faster track has been nearly 10 years in the planning and took more than two years to build. The cost was defrayed thanks to a partnership with the federal government. The feds pumped $200 million into the project, with state governments kicking in $340 million.

Another $80 million was funded locally, and the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District kicked in $30 million, for a total outlay of $650 million.

Ridership because of COVID is down by 50% but Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District President Mike Noland is optimistic that the new upgrades will boost that number.

“We expect now with a continuous train ride, way better service, more train frequency, less delay and we’re going to attract riders,” he said.

The improved train has also ignited a business revival in places like Michigan City along the train route.       A new train depot along with residential condos are going up nearby.

Indiana Rep. Frank Mrvan praised the investment’s dividends, saying that the changes are “all sparked by the double tracking.”

“We’re also creating work and wealth,” he said.

Passengers looking to take the train will pay $10 for tickets on the South Shore Line from Michigan City to Chicago, and the ride will now take less than an hour thanks to the upgrades. The additional service will go into effect Tuesday.

Getting Sydney back on track

south coast trains trip planner

The biggest coordinated program of rail maintenance ever undertaken in Sydney has begun.

Sydney Trains has created the Rail Repair Plan, an accelerated maintenance program that will take place over the next year or more to build a more reliable and resilient train network.

We’ve done our best to minimise impacts to passengers, focusing our maintenance work outside of peak times, predominantly on weekends, and staggering it across different lines on different weekends so trains can still run. We recognise some disruption is inevitable.

Check your line below to see if your travel may be affected.

How to keep updated

  • Plan ahead using the Trip Planner
  • Use the Opal Travel app
  • Check travel alerts
  • Subscribe to the trackwork alert email

info Why we are doing this trackwork

The Sydney Rail Repair Plan has been prepared in response to the recent recommendations made by the expert panel conducting the Sydney Trains Review.

The primary recommendation was to focus on clearing the extensive maintenance backlog across the network, reduce equipment failures and restore reliability.

Sydney Trains has now created the Rail Repair Plan, an accelerated maintenance program that will take place over the next year or more to build a more reliable and resilient train network.

Maintenance work is being prioritised during existing trackwork windows such as on weekends, weeknights, during school holidays or during off peak on a weekday when fewer people are catching trains.

We work closely with our event planning team to ensure there will be transport options to get you where you need to go.

If you’re using the rail network on weekends, please plan ahead using tools such the Trip Planner , the Opal Travel app and check travel alerts or subscribe to the trackwork alert email to keep up-to-date with the latest changes.
