  • Isadora E 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful town - not so good tour guide The place was beautiful, interesting views the people in the town very nice, the food was ok not crazy about it. In regards to the tour, we felt that there was not enough guidance and communication prior the tour, and once we arrived to Colonia our guide was not very enthusiastic… the tour was not what we expected, the boat on the return was beautiful. The schedules should be more flexible, we had to wait until 8:30 pm to return and the tour only lasted an hour so they left us 8 hours there waiting to return to BsAs Read more Written April 28, 2024
  • mel7155 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles It is a ferry ride but real jeckyl and Hyde ferries Took this ferry in April , booked the 0830 ferry and returned by the 1800 ferry . I went on a weekday Monday so it was not crowded . It was a ferry and rainy day . So it was terrible to visit the city in the rain . That being said , here is my opinion of the ferries . 0830 ferry - top of the line ferry that was modern, clean and large. Similar to those ferries you take in the Baltic Sea to visit Helsinki, Riga etc … 1800 ferry - old dilapidated ferry with spoilt or busted seats , smelly and uncomfortable seats . I felt a little unsafe on this ferry with the life vests all strewn under the seats . Guided tour - It was a 1 hour tour that was rudimentary , uninspiring and the guide just wanted to get rid of us to return . As it was bad weather,, maybe she also wanted to return . So I would not recommend a tour - you can DIY at the tourist information and get a guide from there - the people there are more helpful . So my take - take the ferry but don’t bother the guided tour or eating meals at overrated and over priced restaurants in the old town . Read more Written April 21, 2024
  • Y1027DLrachelg 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Lovely day! The ferry wasn't as busy as it seemed it would be (ticket were listed as sold out) and there were tons of empty spaces. We got there over an hour early for customs and that was really quick for us. You clear to Uruguay before the boat there and clear to Argentina before the boat back, so that's super helpful that everything is taken care of once you get to the dock. Views were okay on the way over (river is very polluted and brown), but the day itself was wonderful. Worth it for a fun day outside of BA to be around less crowds. Make sure you bring bug spray! It was very buggy all around town. Read more Written March 30, 2024
  • 50cab50 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Book well in advance Tried to book and pay online for all sorts of activities in ARG, but the Colonia Express was the only one that worked! I printed off my invoice/bar code and it all worked smoothly - thank you Colonia Express. We thought about turning up early at the port to look around/watch boats etc but so glad we didn’t as there was literally nothing there but an ugly port. We did arrive 90 minutes in advance, and sat around a fair bit. You can get a coffee and an alfajora but we didn’t. Very little to do at the port, and no activity to watch (apart from people checking in with dogs and cats). Fun to watch cats on leads being exercised on the boat, but maybe we were lucky that day. We did a half day trip to Colonia (12.50-20.30) which was plenty for a meal and a wander. The artisan market right next to the ferry terminal/old railway station is very nice. Book tickets well in advance as they sell out (I booked about 6 weeks in advance and full day tickets had already gone!) Read more Written March 29, 2024
  • Afrikaphile 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent ferry service Excellent ferry service. I arrived about 75mins before, straight through check in and customs within 15 minutes. Boat on time, comfortable. Same on way back, no problem at all. Colombia is pretty, but tbh there’s not so much to do there (especially in a thunderstorm!). Struggled to fill the day, but a pleasant experience nonetheless. Read more Written March 13, 2024

Nice big ferry on way to Colonia and smaller ferry on return - both ferries had comfortable seating, outside space for photo ops and duty free shop. Both were on time departures and arrivals. • zaheraali 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Scam at Colonia Express in Buenos Aires We arrived at the port and bought the ferry tickets at the counter of Colonia Express two hours before the departure. She asked us to pay 147000 Argentina pesos for two tickets which was lot more then what we saw online before leaving our hotel. I questioned her. She said it is because now close to boarding time. I ask her what if we take evening ferry? She said, even then we will have to pay 147000. Also, she said even if you book online now you will pay 147000 pesos. We trusted her words and unwilling paid 147000 pesos. At boarding hall just to satisfy my doubts, I checked online price and sure enough it was 47000 per person total 94000. I went to all the way upto last screen to see if there was any additional fee. And there was non. I believe this was tourist trap. Not good for Colonia Express business reputation. Got to visit a lovely city and tick off another country. Boat are modern and comfortable. The check-in and immigration process is os simple and straight forward. Stress free for South America. Colonia is cute and pretty. Rent a gold cart for 2 hours (no more is needed) and wander the old town. The day is easy to fill in and enjoy. Read more Written February 1, 2024
  • Patty6-13 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles A long day spent mostly standing in lines… The reward to hassle factor of this day leads me give it a thumbs down! We left our lodging at 8 am to be at the ferry building 2 hours before sailing. Those 2 hours were spent waiting in lines: to check in and get our tickets (we did reserve and prepay), go thru security, immigration out of Argentina, immigration into Uruguay and then the wait to board! The main seating is below decks and the windows are not clear so you can see nothing from below. There are 12 seats on the rear deck and everyone else who chooses to be outside must stand. No onboard snack was offered as stated in the ad. We met our guide at the ferry terminal on landing and then waited again while she checked in the other 25 people who had paid for a tour of the historic area. We were the only English speakers in the group and we did not feel slighted as some other reviewers have described. She seemed to give us as much information as she gave in Spanish. The tour lasted about 95 minutes and then we were on our own to wander around town, see the museums and do a little shopping. We did not choose the lunch option. The historic area has some charm but there is little left of the Portuguese buildings. We wandered back to the ferry building about an hour earlier than we were told to be there because once again we had to stand in line with hundreds of others waiting to go thru security, Uruguayan immigration and then Argentine immigration to board. Two hours in all and we boarded right before they sailed! The trip back was pleasant as we stayed outside. Once back at the dock there was a problem with the gangplank and we waited about 20 minutes for that to get sorted out. We made it to the taxi line right at 8pm, a long 12 hour day with most of it spent standing in lines at the beginning and end. If we had read a review like this one we would never have gone for just the day. I am sure it could be quite pleasant to spend an overnight. Read more Written January 24, 2024
  • frasercameron 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Nice day trip spoiled by waiting for immigration on return Ok going BA to Uruguay. Went through both sets of immigration controls in 5 mins. Crossing completed in 90 mins. Attractive old town where all restaurants take USD, pesos, real as well as credit cards. But problem was Argentina immigration on return with queues lasting 45 mins plus. They should sort this out eg doing both controls on Colonial side. Read more Written December 11, 2023
  • jamesfY3473MC 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Comfortable ferry to Colonia, lines not too bad on our visit We took the ferry one way, from Buenos Aires to Colonia, so can't comment on the bureaucracy on the return. There was a queue at the terminal in BA, where we had to clear both Argentinian and Uruguayan customs/passport control. But at least when we were there, it moved fairly quickly. The boat ride itself was perfectly comfortable, and you exit in Colonia at a terminal just a short walk from the old town. After an afternoon in Colonia, we got a regular bus from another company on to Montevideo. The bus terminal is just down the street from the ferry terminal, and you can leave your luggage either at the baggage check at the bus terminal (if it is open), or at a viajes business across the street, which will do baggage check. The bus to Montevideo was very modern and comfortable. The only downside is that it made very frequent stops en route to Montevideo. Not sure if that is true of all bus services, or if the Colonia Express and Buquebus busses do the same thing. Read more Written November 4, 2023
  • ianmN1344OW 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Bureaucracy gone mad The ferry part is fine. The time required before and after the ferry journey going both ways is ridiculous. Our trip back to Buenos Aires today was 1 hr 20 mins. We waited in various queues on the Colonia side taking 1 hour to board and then on arrival in BA we queued for immigration for 1 hr 30 mins. It's not worth doing a day trip to Colonia. It's a nice chilled place but not worth the hassle of getting there and back in the day. Read more Written October 19, 2023

The Colonia Del Sacramento is a quaint little town in Uruguay that’s easy to visit by driving from Montevideo, and you can even visit it on a day trip by ferry from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Founded in 1680, Colonia is one of the oldest towns in Uruguay, and its historic quarter is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its architecture and history.

It’s safe, easy, and inexpensive to visit Colonia Del Sacramento on a day trip from Argentina, and aside from enjoying this nice town and everything it has to offer, there’s also the novelty of seeing another South American country and renewing your visa.

Colonia Del Sacramento Uruguay

Where Is Colonia Del Sacramento?

The town of Colonia Del Sacramento is located on the southwestern coast of Uruguay, near the meeting point of the Rio De La Plata river and the Atlantic Ocean, and across from the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It’s about 180 kilometers by road from Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, or less than 50 kilometers by sea from Buenos Aires.

How To Get From Montevideo To Colonia Del Sacramento Uruguay

From Montevideo, you can get to Colonia by car, bus , or tour . The drive takes 2 to 3 hours.

There are multiple bus companies offering this route with regular departures, and they have air-conditioning, toilets, and reclining seats. You can book your tickets in advance on Bookaway .

How To Get From Buenos Aires To Colonia Del Sacramento Uruguay

From Argentina, you can get to Colonia by ferry from Buenos Aires. The harbor is in Puerto Madero, to be exact, and there are multiple ferry companies you can choose from.

The ferries advise to be at the harbor 1.5 hours before departure time, although in my case I would’ve been fine with less than an hour. I’m sure it depends on the day and the season.

All of the ferry companies have daily departures going back and forth in the morning and evening, so doing this as a day trip is no problem, although it’s a good idea to book your tickets in advance. Sometimes they do sell out.

The ferry ride is safe, comfortable, and relaxing, and only takes about 1.5 hours of sailing in either direction. I even found an electric outlet to charge my phone battery on the way back to Argentina.

Immigration is pretty easy on both sides of the border. As a US citizen, I didn’t need any visa for Argentina or Uruguay, so it was very easy to do this as a day trip, but remember to check the current visa requirements for your nationality in these countries, and don’t forget to bring your passport!

Colonia Del Sacramento Uruguay Day Trip From Buenos Aires Argentina Montevideo

It’s easy to do a day trip from Buenos Aires to Colonia Del Sacramento

Best Ferry From Buenos Aires To Colonia Del Sacramento

The two main ferry companies from Buenos Aires are Buquebus and Colonia Express .

They both run similar schedules to Colonia Del Sacramento, and there’s not much of a difference in quality between them, so you can just go with whichever company has seats available for your travel dates. A third option is SeaCat, although they don’t seem to be quite as well liked.

You can book tickets with Buquebus on Bookaway , or Colonia Express on GetYourGuide . The advantage of the latter is that they have a walking tour with a bilingual tour guide, and an optional winery visit.

It’s also possible to buy tickets on the official websites for the ferry companies, but they’re written in Spanish and the sites have a lot of glitches, so this is one time when it’s actually easier to book with third party companies.

Things To Do In Colonia Del Sacramento Uruguay

Once you arrive in Colonia Del Sacramento, the historic quarter is within walking distance from the ferry harbor , and it’s small enough to get around the whole area on foot. There’s no need for transportation at all.

Colonia is a peaceful and attractive town with cobblestone streets, quaint old buildings, and a mixture of Portuguese and Spanish cultural influences thanks to its colonial history.

Here are some of the best things to see and do in Colonia Del Sacramento:

  • City Gate & Wall . The first thing to see in Colonia is the 1745 AD stone gate, wooden drawbridge, and defensive wall at the entrance to the historic quarter. You can climb up to the wall and see an old cannon, and then walk along the wall for more views of the waterfront.
  • Street of Sighs . This is one of Colonia’s most photogenic streets, with colorful old buildings and a cobblestone road. It was one of my favorite picture spots.
  • Basilica of the Blessed Sacrament . A historic Catholic church from the 1800s with arched ceilings and other noteworthy architecture.
  • Colonia Del Sacramento Lighthouse . This 1857 AD lighthouse was built on the ruins of a 17th century chapel, the Convent of San Francisco Javier. The light guided sailors to safety for centuries, and it’s still operational today. You can pay a small cash fee to climb to the top of the tower for panoramic views above the town.
  • Pietra Minerals of Uruguay . This is a nice little rock shop with semi-precious stones like agates, quartz, and amethysts. Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s a great place to look around. When I was there, the owner was even handing out small rocks for free to every visitor.

Last, but not least, there are a bunch of interesting museums in Colonia to see, including a Portuguese Museum and a high-rated Origami Art Museum .

After its founding in 1680, this town bounced back and forth between Portuguese and Spanish control for a century, so both countries left a mark on the culture of Colonia. There are even some beaches you can visit nearby if you rent a bike!

How Long To Stay In Colonia

A day trip is enough time to see the best highlights of Colonia Del Sacramento, although you could easily stay longer if you enjoy the laidback feel of the town.

There are plenty of hotels and restaurants to keep you comfortable in town for several days, and you could use the extra time to explore every inch of the historic quarter and see all the museums at your own pace.

More Tips For Colonia Town

  • What To Wear: This part of Uruguay has the same climate and temperatures as Buenos Aires, so you can usually wear summer clothes most of the year.
  • Where To Stay: Two good hotel options in Colonia are Posada del Angel or Posada Boutique Las Terrazas .
  • Restaurants: Eating places in Colonia tend to be a bit overpriced because of tourism, but the food is good. Check out Charco Bistro or Casa Viera .
  • Cash: You can usually pay for things with US Dollars or Argentine Pesos, so there’s no need to change money to Uruguayan Pesos, especially on a day trip. Some places even accept Euros or Brazilian Reals. The only exception is the museums, which have a small entrance fee that can only be paid with Uruguayan cash, nothing else. There are several ATMs in town if needed.
  • Credit Cards: Most places in town accept credit cards, including restaurants and hotels, so this is generally the best way to pay for everything. Small souvenir stands may be cash only.
  • WiFi: The town has good phone reception and you can find fast WiFi in many restaurants and hotels. Staying connected is no problem.

Is Uruguay Safe?

Colonia Del Sacramento is a safe and tourist friendly town.

Even though the country of Uruguay doesn’t have a perfect safety record, the quiet little town of Colonia is traveled by lots of international tourists every day, and I’m not aware of any bad incidents that have ever happened here.

When I visited Colonia, I carried my camera all over the historic district taking pictures, and I saw lots of other photographers doing the same thing with setups that looked more expensive than mine.

Overall, I felt perfectly safe in Colonia Del Sacramento. Just take normal precautions and you shouldn’t run into any issues at all.

Is Colonia Worth It?

Yes, I’d say Colonia is worth it. Even though there aren’t a whole lot of things to do in Colonia Del Sacramento beyond a day trip, I still think it’s an enjoyable town to visit.

My trip to Uruguay was a good experience in every way, and it was fun to see a new country and cross it off my bucket list without paying for any expensive flights.

Best of all, Colonia was easy and relaxing, since I was already worn out from lots of hiking and sightseeing in Patagonia and Iguazu Falls !

Colonia del Sacramento- Day Trip From Buenos Aires to Uruguay

Purchases made through links earn us a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

All it takes is a day trip from Buenos Aires to Uruguay to be charmed by Colonia del Sacramento, one of Uruguay’s original towns.

Exploring Colonia del Sacramento on a day trip from Buenos Aires to Uruguay.

With cobblestone streets, plenty of colonial-era architecture, a riverside location, and an interesting history of Portuguese and Spanish influences, a day trip to Colonia del Sacramento is easily enjoyed.

City gate in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay.

Here’s everything you need to know about a day trip to Colonia, including how to get to Colonia del Sacramento from Buenos Aires, places to see and things to do in Colonia, plus some helpful tips for visiting Uruguay from Buenos Aires. But first, here’s a brief history of Colonia del Sacramento to enhance your visit.

About Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

Colonia del Sacramento was founded by the Portuguese in 1680, making it one of the oldest towns in Uruguay. Its location on the north shore of Rio de le Plata, where the Uruguay and Paraná rivers meet, made it a strategic location for defending against the Spanish, who had competing claims over the region that is now Uruguay.

Over the next century, control of Colonia del Sacramento would bounce back and forth between Portugal and Spain in a cycle of conquests and treaties. Later the town was incorporated into Brazil after the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves annexed the region. Eventually Brazil gained independence from Portugal and then Uruguay became an independent state, freeing Colonia del Sacramento from foreign control.

To this day, Portuguese and Spanish influences are still evident, especially in the style of architecture and street plans. In the Historic Quarter of Colonia you can see the terrain-fitting, irregular street network developed by the Portuguese, whereas the newer Spanish areas have a grid system of wide streets and large squares.

As a result of having preserved its original structure and urban scale, the Historic Quarter of Colonia del Sacramento was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.

Colonia del Sacramento’s fusion of cultures, historical significance, and attractive location have made it one of the top tourist destinations in Uruguay.

How to Get to Colonia del Sacramento from Buenos Aires- The Colonia Ferry

To visit Colonia del Sacramento on a day trip from Buenos Aires you will need to take a ferry across the Rio de la Plata.

There are two ferry companies to choose from to get to Colonia from Buenos Aires- Buquebus and Colonia Express. Both ferries have a sailing time of about 1 hr 15 min and offer an early morning and early afternoon departure from Buenos Aires. For the return trip, ferries usually depart Colonia in late afternoon and evening.

Rio de la Plata and the Colonia del Sacramento lighthouse.

We decided to book with Colonia Express because they were less expensive (in our experience) and offered a ticket that included a guided walking tour of Colonia del Sacramento for only a few extra dollars.

After booking our ferry tickets on-line here , we were emailed a confirmation with our reservation code, walking tour vouchers, and instructions for the day of our trip.

The check-in and boarding process (in both directions) took longer than the ferry ride since we had to arrive 90 minutes before departure. There were big lines to check-in and get our boarding pass printed, then to go through customs. You will need to have your passport and any applicable visas to enter Uruguay.

Day Trip to Colonia del Sacramento From Buenos Aires- Our Experience

We arrived in Colonia del Sacramento around 10:00 am so had almost a full morning and part of the afternoon to explore, since we were scheduled to depart at 4:30 pm.

Antique truck parked in front of the Colonia del Sacramento lighthouse.

On our day trip to Colonia del Sacramento we spent all our time exploring Colonia’s historic quarter.

First we went on a guided walking tour of Colonia del Sacramento to get acquainted with the town and its history. After a leisurely lunch waiting for a heavy rain storm to pass, we spent the afternoon wandering the cobblestone streets and simply taking in the atmosphere.

Had the weather been better, we might have had time to visit one of the nearby beaches, but the water was pretty brown and silty, so not appealing for swimming anyways.

Colonia del Sacramento Tour- Places to See in Colonia’s Historic Quarter

Colonia del Sacramento’s historic quarter (Barrio Histórico) is within walking distance from the ferry terminal. There’s also an information centre nearby if you want to get a map before venturing into town.

Here’s a look at some places to see in Colonia del Sacramento on a day trip.

Brick walkways in a park beside the Basilica of the Holy Sacrament.

City Gate and Wall (Portón de Campo)

Marking the entrance to the Historic Quarter of Colonia del Sacramento is the city gate, wooden drawbridge, and defensive wall.

Colonia del Sacramento city gate.

The fortifications were built in the 1700s but were later damaged and torn down by the Spanish. Most of what you see today has been reconstructed on top of the rampart’s original base, which exists below the bronze nails in the wall.

City wall beside a cobblestone street.

Even though the main gate was rebuilt from 1968 to 1971, it still has its original carved stone portico from 1745. The Portuguese coat of arms crowning the portico is a copy (the original can be seen in the Portuguese Museum).

After passing through the gate you’ll see an old canon positioned for battle at the top of the wall. You can climb up there for a closer look then walk along the wall towards the ruins of San Miguel bastion for a nice view of the waterfront.

Street of Sighs (Calle de los Suspiros)

One block over from the city wall is the Street of Sighs, one of Colonia del Sacramento’s most interesting streets.

Street of Sighs in Colonia del Sacramento.

Framing this Portuguese street is a collection of houses from the first colonial period. Some have painted facades of mud and clay while others are more plain. The buildings definitely show their age, but that’s part of what makes the Street of Sighs so enchanting.

An old stone and clay building.

Another notable feature of this street is that it still has its original cobblestone layout, complete with a water drain down the middle of it. Adding to the historic charm are distinctive old street lamps mounted to the sides of the buildings.

Street of Sighs in Colonia del Sacramento.

As for the street’s unusual name, there are a few different legends about where it came from. Perhaps the sighs were the last breaths of criminals who were hung at the end of the street. Or maybe the sighs were those of sailors who had been tempted into a good time by prostitutes who lined the streets. If you’re a sucker for tragic romances, you might believe the theory that a woman was killed here and sighed her lover’s name as she died. No one knows for sure where the name Street of Sighs came from, but each legend adds to the street’s intrigue.

Lighthouse and Convent Ruins

Colonia del Sacramento’s lighthouse has been guiding sailors to safety since 1857, after being built on part of the ruins of the 17th century Convent of San Francisco Xavier.

Colonia del Sacramento lighthouse and convent ruins.

Before the lighthouse was constructed, stormy seas and dark, moonless nights caused many shipwrecks on the Rio de la Plata. To try and solve this problem, a tax to fund the building of a lighthouse was levied on ships arriving in Colonia.

Colonia del Sacramento lighthouse.

Well over a century after it was built, the Colonia del Sacramento lighthouse is still in operation. For a fee, you can climb 118 steps to the top. We decided not to go up, so can’t comment on if the views are worth it or not.

Archaeological Remains of the Governor’s House

Continuing our Colonia del Sacramento tour, we headed to Plaza de Armas Manuel Lobo where we got to see the ruins of the Portuguese governor’s house (Casa de los Gobernadores).

Stone foundation of the governor's house.

As you’d expect, the governor’s house was the most prominent house in Colonia at the time of its construction. It had strong stone walls, wooden beams, and stone carvings framing the windows and doors. The house even had its own water supply system.

Trees and grass growing at the former site of the governor's house.

Unfortunately, we had to imagine what the house looked like because it was destroyed in 1777 by the Spanish when they took control of Colonia. All that exists today are some remains of the foundation and water supply system.

Basilica of the Holy Sacrament

The final highlight of our Colonia del Sacramento tour was the Basilica of the Holy Sacrament.

Exterior of the Basilica of the Holy Sacrament in Colonia del Sacramento.

The church was built by the Portuguese from 1808-1810 and still maintains its original one nave design, despite undergoing several renovations over the years. Extensive work had to take place after an explosion collapsed a large part of the building in 1823. This was followed by more interventions to strengthen the building, then another restoration in the mid-1900s that respected the building’s history and artistic values.

More Things to Do in Colonia del Sacramento

Since we only did a day trip to Colonia del Sacramento, we didn’t have time to see and do everything.

There are several museums we could have visited including the Portuguese Museum (exhibits furniture replicas and uniforms), the Spanish Museum (contains items relating to the colonial history), the Municipal Museum (exhibits artifacts from different periods and cultures of Colonia), and the Tile Museum (displays a collection of tiles made from 1849-1900).

If you have a strong interest in history you could probably spend your entire day trip to Colonia just checking out museums.

Final Thoughts About Our Day Trip to Colonia del Sacramento

We enjoyed visiting Colonia del Sacramento and had a lovely time wandering the streets and learning a bit about the town’s history during our tour. I especially appreciated the colonial architecture and big trees throughout town.

Tree-lined street in Colonia del Sacramento.

However, this day trip from Buenos Aires to Uruguay was more tiring than we expected.

First off, we spent a lot of time waiting in lines at the ferry terminals. Going through customs in Colonia was especially slow so there was a huge backlog of people waiting to board the ferry to Buenos Aires. Our boat departed later than scheduled on both trips.

Pink house.

The second downside we experienced was that it was hard to get a taxi from the ferry terminal in Buenos Aires back to our hotel. There were a lot of taxis waiting, but they were either already spoken for or told us they weren’t allowed to leave yet. So we decided to start walking in hopes of flagging one down on the street, but even that took forever and didn’t happen until we had already walked a considerable distance.

Colonial house.

After taking all these logistics into consideration, we’re still glad we went on a day trip to Colonia del Sacramento, but probably wouldn’t do it again. Spending the night would have made our excursion to Uruguay more relaxing, even though the historic quarter of Colonia can easily be seen in a day.

Tips for Visiting Colonia del Sacramento

Getting to Colonia from Buenos Aires: Colonia del Sacramento is about a 1 hour 15 min ferry ride from Buenos Aires. The two companies offering sailings are Buquebus and Colonia Express (who we used). Each company typically offers 2- 3 sailings per day from Buenos Aires to Colonia and back again.

Colonia Ferry Tickets: Here is the trusted site we used to book ferry tickets to Colonia del Sacramento . We chose the ticket option that included a walking tour.

Getting Around: Colonia’s historic quarter can easily be explored by foot and is within walking distance from the ferry terminal. If you want to travel to the beaches there are places you can rent a golf cart or bike for the day.

Money/Currency: In our experience, there was no need to exchange some money into Uruguayan pesos for a day trip to Colonia del Sacramento. We were able to use our Visa card at the restaurant and Argentine pesos for other snacks we bought throughout the day. The restaurant we chose had a note on the menu that they accept Argentine pesos, US dollars, Brazilian reals, and Euros.

  • Since we didn’t visit any shops, museums, or places with an admission fee, we’re not sure if cash would have been needed or what currency is accepted.
  • There are ATMs if you need to withdraw money.

Tourist Information: The BIT Welcome Centre (glass-walled building opposite the port) is the main tourist information centre in Colonia. There’s also a tourist office just outside the city gate that organizes walking tours with local guides.

Information can change without notice. Please confirm directly with service providers.
