travel boston to philadelphia

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is just over 300 miles southwest of Boston, Massachusetts . There are several ways to get from Boston to Philadelphia, including flying and taking the train.

Flying is the fastest option and can be quite affordable, though you will likely want to take an Uber or taxi to get to and from the airport in either city ( public transportation is an option, but navigating airport transit may be daunting for some). Taking the Amtrak is more convenient, while the bus is the most affordable option. Both take you into right into the city center; however, the travel time is a good amount higher.

How you choose to travel from Boston to Philadelphia will depend on your personal preferences and where exactly you are coming from and heading to within each city. For most travel options, booking ahead will allow for cost savings. Here are the details on each to help you weigh the pros and cons and make a decision that best suits your trip.

How to Get from Boston to Philadelphia

  • Train: 5-6 hours, one-way from $45
  • Bus: 6 hours and 30 minutes, one-way from $11
  • Car: 5 hours, 310 miles
  • Plane: 1 hour and 40 minutes, one-way from $39

If you're looking for a low-stress way of traveling from Boston to Philadelphia and don't mind spending a bit more time than flying, the train may be your best bet. There are two Amtrak trains that leave from Boston's South Station, one of the city's busiest stations for MBTA trains, buses, and commuter rails. The fastest option is taking the Amtrak Acela, a higher-speed train that takes about five hours; the Northeast Regional train takes close to six hours. Amtrak trains between these cities are quite regular, running almost on the hour. The train will drop you off at 30th Street Station, which is connected to the SEPTA in Philadelphia .

Prices for one-way tickets are estimated to range from $45 to $160—and believe it or not, the faster train can be the less expensive option. Check out both options to ensure you're getting the best price-to-travel-time ratio. Amtrak tickets from Boston to Philadelphia can be purchased in advance on Amtrak.com or in-person at South Station.

There are plenty of affordable options for traveling by bus from Boston to Philadelphia. Of course, opting for the bus means your trip is going to take about six and a half hours, as there are stops along the way and traffic can be unpredictable.

Boston's South Station is a major hub for buses, and you'll find MegaBus , Greyhound , and BoltBus buses that go to 30th Street Station or the Philadelphia Bus Station here. Depending on the bus company you choose, one-way ticket prices tend to range from $11 to $50.

If you're willing to spend quite a few hours on a bus in exchange for low-cost tickets and frequent departures, look into taking the bus. Most buses have Wi-Fi, though you may want to bring a book just in case you're stuck on one that doesn't have a strong signal.

Some travelers prefer the freedom of driving themselves from one destination to another, while others simply need their car at their final destination. The route from Boston to Philadelphia is just over 300 miles and, not factoring in any traffic or stops, takes about five hours to drive. Given the length of this trip, renting a car or driver likely doesn't make sense.

In addition to affordability and flexibility, driving also allows for plenty of room to load up the car, whether it's with family members or luggage. The five-hour drive is doable in one stretch, but if you prefer to break it up, there are several cities along the way to visit. Be sure to plan ahead and ensure you have an affordable place to park once you arrive at your destination. With all that said, if you're the type that prefers to zone out or multi-task during long trips, you may want to opt for an alternate method of transportation.

Most major airlines fly direct from Boston Logan International Airport to Philadelphia International Airport , including JetBlue, American Airlines, and Delta. Nonstop flights take about one hour and 40 minutes and run nearly every hour. Prices will vary by airline, time of year, and when you book, but one-way tickets can cost as low as $39. Starting in May 2020, Frontier Airlines will start offering seasonal daily flights between the two cities at affordable prices.

To get to Logan Airport, you can take an Uber or taxi (which will take around 10 minutes without traffic), or use the MBTA , which has trains that run from downtown right to the airport. The Philadelphia airport is seven miles from downtown; when you arrive, you can use a ride-hailing service or opt to take the SEPTA Airport Line Regional Rail train.

Even when you factor in the time it takes to get to and from the airports and clearing security, flying is the fastest option. If the total travel time based on where you're coming from seems the same as the Amtrak, you may want to explore both options before deciding what works best for you.

Top airline flying from Boston to Philadelphia

Check in online was easy. Seats aren’t very comfortable

Fecal matter in seat back pocket. Presumably from a kids diaper.

Worst airline to travel with. They treat you like a prisoner in a jailhouse barking out orders and threats. Nickle and dime you to the same price or higher than a respectable airline like one of the big 3 . Might as well fly with standard airlines

Well I mean u get what u pay for so 🤷‍♂️

Over an hour delay in departure but I was notified beforehand. Another delay on tarmac upon arrival at LGA. We ended up departing the plane almost 2 hours later than expected

I fly Frontier because it’s affordable. I understand that the seats are tight and not the most comfortable…but that’s part of it. The problem with this flight was that there was a group of travelers directly behind me at the back of the plane who were ridiculously loud and obnoxious the entire flight. I’m pretty sure they were drunk and I could periodically smell an odd odor that I believe was one of them using a smokeless vape pen. The stewards had to remind them to keep quiet during the pre-flight instruction, but that was it. They never said another thing to them for the rest of the flight. It was a miserable.

I checked a bag because it was $5 less than carry on. They managed to lose my bag on a 2.5 hr direct flight! Frontier has no airport staff at baggage claim to help. As soon as I got home around 11 pm I tried to use their online system to file the claim for lost bag - system wouldn't take the # on my baggage claim ticket - said it was not the correct number. Also said that I had not checked a bag, which wasn't true - even my online boarding pass showed that I had checked a bag. Wasted about an hour on that process with no luck. Tried again in the morning - same thing. So tried online chat with Frontier bot - waited 35-40" twice to be connected to a baggage agent and it never happened. Eventually drove to PDX after work and waited 2 hrs for the Frontier ticket agents to arrive prior to the next Frontier flight out of PDX and FINALLY got some help from one of them, to take me to lost luggage area where I was able to retrive my bag. Probably took 4-5 hrs. of my time and endless frustration to get my bag. This was my first -- and LAST -- experience flying Frontier Airlines. Check-in was also extremely difficult and time consuming. The flight itself (and staff) were fine but everything else about the experience was a total disaster! The fact that Frontier literally has NO WAY to connect to a human voice for customer service (in this case for lost luggage) is the WORST!!!!!

Frontier is a crappy airline nothing about it is honest

I didn't get to do this flight l, hard to review

Not good 😐 Over priced baggage fees Small hard seats No wifi or entertainment options 😕

Riding the Acela Train for the First Time: A Beginner's Guide

I f you’re looking to travel between Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, and other cities on the Northeast Corridor, the Acela train is a comfortable and convenient option.

When it comes to trains, as a Midwesterner, we tend to rely more on cars for transportation. But if you want to see more of the country, and want the option to stop in multiple places, you may want to consider the train.

One thing I loved about the train, was it gave us the opportunity to hop off and explore a city we wouldn’t have normally done. And with the kids in tow, it was a fun treat for them too!

As someone riding the Acela for the first time , here are some tips to make the most of your trip:

Why Choose Acela?

There are actually two trains that run through the Northeast Corridor. The Northeast Regional train and the Acela.

The Acela offers a smooth and speedy ride, with trains traveling at speeds up to 150 mph. It shaves a full hour off the regular train. The trains feature more legroom and space compared to flying coaches.

There’s free WiFi and power outlets at every seat to stay connected and charged.

Plus, you can relax and enjoy the scenery along the route.

The tickets cost about $50 – $100 more than the Northeast Regional, but the time savings make it all worth it.

Where Will You Stop?

The Acela makes stops in major cities between Boston and  Washington DC , including Providence, New York,  Philadelphia , Baltimore, and others. Each stop is about 5 minutes with a longer stop in New York.

You will not see much of New York from the train, just a brief view in and out, but you’ll go underground before you get to the actual city. And the Statue of Liberty isn’t visible. You’ll need to plan a day trip for that.

Can You Hop On/Off the Acela Train?

The Acela Train is not a Hop On/Off train. Because you reserve your tickets and seats ahead of time, it’s often filled to capacity, not allowing for this flexibility.

If you want to get off the train and explore, you’ll need to purchase separate tickets. In our case, we purchased tickets from Boston to Philidelphia, and Philidelphia to Washington DC.

Amtrak does sell Multi-Pass rides, just not on the Boston to Washington DC route.

How to Choose Seats on the Amtrack Train?

Since the Acela Train is all Business Class, you can select your specific seat assignment when booking tickets online.

For the best views along coastal sections between Boston and New York, aim for seats A or C. Most seats face forward, except some bulkhead seats.

How do you know where to find your train?

To find out what track your train will be on, you’ll need to check out the schedule board. Both stations in Boston and Philadelphia had large displays to view, right at the entrance, telling you what tack the train was on. it’s very similar to an airport.

When the sign switches to boarding, head on out. Most people are waiting around the sign for it to flip.

The Boston’s South Station, had all trains outside, to the right of the main entrance of the station. New York’s platform is underground. Philidelphia’s platform is underground as well. DC’s platform is outdoors, through a set of doors to the right as well.

Each train car is marked clearly, and you can enter any car. In most cases, it’s easier to just get on, on your particular car.

If you have any questions once you get to the station, find an agent and they’ll give you the lowdown of the station.

When do they check your tickets on the train?

Your tickets will be checked onboard after the train departs. Sometimes it can take a full stop before someone comes by. Have your phone ready with the QR Code.

They check again after New York due to passenger turnover.

I liked that all the tickets were on one QR code versus having to swipe through each one. It was convenient for families that way.

How do you know when your stop is coming up?

Amtrak’s app will give you an estimate of when your train will arrive. In both cases, our train was delayed slightly, so it was necessary to listen to the announcements.

Before stops, you’ll get a 5-minute warning that it’s coming up.

On this train, they mentioned that all car doors would open. Sometimes they only open a select few cars, requiring you to move to another car to exit.

Will Amtrak Hold your Bags while you explore a city?

Yes, Amtrak stations hold bags for you for a $10 charge. Most stations, including Philidelphia and Union Station in DC, will hold bas for 24 hrs. at a time.

Give yourself an extra 10-15 minutes to store your bags when arriving at the station.

Everything in the bag has to be inside the bag. Any water stuffed in a side pocket will need to be zipped inside.

Can you eat on the train?

Yes, the train has a dining car. In our case, it was car 4. They sell drinks and snacks, breakfast sandwiches, and more.

You can also bring your own food.

I get motion sickness, can I take the train?

Yes, the train is relatively smooth, but if you have serious motion sickness, you may want to consider Dramamine. I also recommend a forward-seating car.

I have no problems flying, and only seem to get motion sickness when I’m in the back of a van on a bumpy road, I’m a passenger and pregnant, or if I get on one of those rocking rides at amusement parks.

Immediately after we got rolling, I started to feel my stomach turn, but after about 2 minutes I hardly noticed it.

Walking around on a moving train was a whole other skill.

I found later that day, similar to getting off a boat, there was a distinct train-riding sensation when I was motionless.

Is the Train Kid Friendly?

The Acela is very kid-friendly! The seats are large with spacious legroom, there’s a cafe car, and you’re free to move about the train.

The booth-style seats are ideal for families. Kids will love gazing out the windows and may even spot some wildlife along the way.

Having assigned seats was great because we didn’t have to worry about getting up and losing seats together.

Would I take the train again?

Immediately after doing this trip, I started researching additional routes. It was a fun way to explore a new part of the country. If you do, take the trip, make sure to pack light, have some entertainment, and don’t forget to look out and enjoy the view.

The Acela offers a comfortable, easy way to travel between major cities without the hassle of flying or driving yourself. Let me know if you have any other questions – I’m happy to share more Acela tips!

5-hour delay due to storms in Tanoa and airspace restricted by Miami traffic controllers.

A regional sized plane was used for a cross country flight with no overhead bin space. I had to "pink check" my laptop and my medications. I was NOT pleased!!!!

Absolutely nothing flight was cancelled and delayed for 2 days. Barely a heads up I want a full refund

The plane from SNA wouldn’t start after 5 tries. The team gave me an option of flying direct from LAX and giving me a Lyft ride there! Perfect!

Best airline! Always friendly and welcoming. Skyclub was great and loved the fast free wifi on board. I also love that you can pre-order your meal on the app!

Atlanta boarding crew at gate were filled with arrogance and were disrespectful. In flight crew showed indifference to the needs of passengers. This is about the flight from ATL to BDL.

The boarding was horrible. You couldn’t hear the announcements at all. Probably because there is so much in the area for businesses. They need a louder PA system. Other than that it was a good Delta experience.

Boarding was somewhat chaotic. Unable to evaluate crew or food/drink because captain kept them seated due to turbulence. Have no idea if entertainment was offered.

The gate area was incredibly short staffed, with one representative manning 4-5 flights, which caused a 3 hr delay in boarding even though the plane was all ready to leave. Other flights also were delayed because of this. The flight crew was awesome and I feel bad for the only gate worker on call, but Delta needs to hire more employees.

Very frustrated with boarding gate crew. She announced the plane was small and they would be limiting us to one item to carry on. Not a problem for me as I understand the tiny planes have limited space!! Not the case here! It was a rather large plane and had plenty of room for bags! So because I don’t want to be one of “those people” who ignores the request to check a carry on I did so asking if I would be able to pick it up at the bottom of the ramp on arrival in Knoxville to which she responded “yes”! Then I watched as every other passenger held onto their 2 items and boarded!! Then when we arrived in Knoxville our 2 carry ons had been put with all the other luggage and we had to go to baggage pick up and wait for all the big checked bags to come off the carousel! So she lied!! Frustrating. Next time I won’t be so nice!

Business class is great. New airplane, very comfortable, better than some of the major airlines I am used to

Delayed by almost an hour - I also noticed that all JetBlue flights departing from PBI were delayed yet the weather was perfect.

I loved the wifi, much better than Delta. Seats were old. and bathrooms dingy.

There was no wheelchair or wheelchair escort at the gate..unacceptable

Delayed 4 hours because of maintenance issue they knew about all day. Get another plane. Time is precious!

I liked that boarding and take off were timely despite a 15 minute delay due to weather. The pilot communicated with us the entire flight keeping us informed re: turbulance and slight delays on the runway after we landed.

Has been always great except flight cancelation in the past at very last minute waiting till 2am and we when have to beg for overnight accommodation

There were weather issues and coding problems whatever those refer to, but JetBlue, for two days in a row was unbelievably late. Several hours late, resulting in almost no sleep for passengers like me.

The plane was very hot. There were delays . Generally, the flight was great.

If jet blue is going to offer tv at every seat, fix the headphone connection so you can hear. Haven’t had a usable headphone jack in years

Not being able to purchase my check in baggage online was a negative.

LATE LATE LATE!!! Plagued by late AA flights on this trip. Such a drag. This one was by far the worst.

Delayed abs delayed Gate crew giving poor info - we are definitely leaving at —- Ultimately to cancel flight after 4+ hours of delays Just cancel it earlier

Same basket of unhealthy prepackaged snacks (junk food) which was depleted by the time it got to my row!!

We experience delays on departure and connecting flights resulting in 14 hour to our next departure. We were accommodated with a night's stay but was only provided a 12 dollar meals accommodation. The airlines rules state.at least 50 dollars. In any case, it can not make up for the whole day missed on our vacation in Sydney Australia.

Flight from PHL to PHX arrived 50 minutes early and a gate was available. First class flight attendant Stephanie was very friendly and polite. Sanitizing wipes should be provided with meals in addition to refresher towels.

flight delayed so missed connection and this had to rebook for next day

Flight departed PHL one hour late due to late arrival of aircraft. On board services were okay. First class menu does not offer any new items; same desserts (cheese & crackers or Mango sorbet). At least there were no credit card promotions during the flight.

After sitting on plane for 7+ hours, flight was canceled. And to makes matters worse, my suitcase is in baggage hell!

This plane is my favorite despite the very limited overhead space. Seats are comfortable!

Didn't like anything!! Horrible flight. Small seating area and hard seats. Butt was sore after 2 hour flight to Seattle No entertainment or free refreshments No wifi or USB charging receptacles to charge phone entoute like other airliners Luggage rates were 3 times as much as competitors. Difficult to navigate online luggue process to pre pay before flight Overall bad experience WILL NEVER RIDE OR RECOMMEND FRONTIER TO FRIENDS OR FAMILY MEMBERS!!! THIS IS A SHAME!! MOST MESERIBLE FLIGHT OF MY LIFE!! AND I THOUGHT SPIRIT WAS 👎 YOU GOT THEM BEAD HANDS DOWN!!

Flight was a little late taking off. Seats are too upright, no ports to charge devices, no wifi, no entertainment

More than a decade after a stroke, Randy Travis sings again, courtesy of AI

By Lee Cowan

May 5, 2024 / 9:10 AM EDT / CBS News

Even if you're not into country, you can't help but bathe in the baritone that is Randy Travis. His voice goes down like whisky – always has, ever since his first album, "Storms of Life," in 1986.  "I thought if we sold 40,000 copies they might let us make a second record." said producer Kyle Lehning.

They ended up selling four million . "So, I'm a genius!" Lehning laughed.

Randy Travis and that voice helped build Warner Music Nashville into what it is today. "How do you describe the thing that just hits you in the center of your chest and unconsciously makes you feel full, and familiar, and known?" said Cris Lacy, the label's co-chair and co-president. "How do you describe something like that?"

His was a God-given talent … and then, fate took it all away.

In 2013 Travis suffered a massive stroke . He was given just a 2% chance of survival. "I thought we were going to lose him," said Lehning.

Lacy said, "It felt like it could be the end of an era."

Besides the paralysis, the area of his brain that controls speech and language was hit the hardest. Randy's wife, Mary, said, "Music is what he's made of. Music is his heart, it's his soul."

Mary does most of the talking these days. She said Randy know what he wants to say, but it just doesn't come out.

Asked if he'd made peace with that, Randy replied, "Yep. Yep."

Three years after his stroke, with Mary at his side, Travis was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and gave "Amazing Grace" new meaning . There wasn't a dry eye in the house.

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum 2016 Medallion Ceremony - Show

In his absence, though, he's heard a lot of AI-generated fakes of his voice. A simple Google search brings up sites that promise to covert anyone's vocal into a Randy Travis sound-alike. "It doesn't sound good, and it doesn't sound real, because it's not," said Lacy.

And that got his record label to thinking. Lacy said, "We started with this concept of, what would AI for good look like for us? And the first thing that came to mind was, we would give Randy Travis his voice back."

There were more than a few skeptics – Kyle Lehning, for one. "It sounded like a parlor trick or something," he said.

But Lehning (with Randy's blessing) decided to try. He and Warner Music started by pulling 42 Randy Travis tracks from the vault, like the original recording of his hit "1982." And then, they stripped away the music, leaving only the vocal.

That was half the recipe. The other half needed to be provided by a donated, or "surrogate," voice. In this case, that voice came from country music singer James DuPre.

james-dupre-mary-travis-kyle-lehning-randy-travis.jpg

The AI program – the "secret sauce" – takes Travis' voice and overlays it on top of DuPre's singing. It's hardly an exact science.  "It's not about how it sounds; it's about how it feels ," Lehning said.

And that is not something a computer can figure out. "Not yet!" Lehning laughed.

He knows Travis' voice almost better than Randy does; they've worked together for 40 years.  This time, though, the task was to take a computer-generated voice and give it Randy's country heart.  "Him being here and him being able to be a vital part of the decision-making process makes all the difference to me," said Lehning.

secret-sauce.jpg

In the end, they landed on something they felt worthy of a voice no one but those who knew him best could replicate.

According to Lacy, "It's Randy Travis. Randy's on the other side of the microphone. It's still his vocal. There's no reason he shouldn't be able to make music, and to deprive him of that, if he still wants to do that, that's unconscionable to me."

Two months ago, Warner Music gathered a small circle of fellow musicians into a recording studio. Randy sat with a Cheshire Cat's grin, and then they hit "play."

Listen to Randy Travis' "Where That Came From":

The reaction to his first new song in more than a decade was a mix of joy and wonder.

For his wife, tears. For Randy's country friends, like Grammy-winning superstar Carrie Underwood, there was confusion. ("How? How? How?!? ") For Cole Swindell, who just won three ACM Awards, it reminded him of why he became a country singer in the first place. ("For you all to let me hear it, that means a lot. Damn, I'm glad to hear you sing!") And veteran country star Clay Walker was simply over the moon.

carrie-underwood-randy-travis.jpg

Even Randy's own family hadn't heard it until two weeks ago.

It was perfection ... with a caveat.  "We don't exactly know how to get here again," said Cris Lacy.

The second song they're working on is proving a harder nut to crack. There's still work to be done, and a lot of questions to answer about what this all means going forward.

But revel in this: After a decade-long absence, Randy Travis is back on the radio. His post-stroke debut song, "Where That Came From," was released this past week.

kyle-lehning-randy-travis.jpg

For Randy, it's not just a single, it's a victory. And as Mary says, "It's a life inspiration. Speak kindly, love fully, live completely, and leave the rest to God."

Sounds like there's a song in there somewhere. We can only hope.
