Wonderful Rome Museums you can visit without leaving your house
Carefully curated selection of Rome museums with virtual tours you can visit from the comfort of your own home.
Nothing compares with the experience of physically being inside a museum, watching an original piece of art that defeated the passing of time with its beauty.
However, sometimes you simply cannot do that, like recent events have made very clear (I am writing this in March 2020…)
If that is the case, however, you don’t have to totally give up on the idea of museum ‘going’.
Some Rome museums, following the lead of other cultural institutions around the world, offer the option of virtual visit and while this is not at all like walking along their gorgeous corridors, it is still better than nothing!
The ‘tours’ are not videos but 360 degrees images you can tilt and move around with your cursor as if you were standing in the museum and looking around you.
The images are really cool and a very different experience than watching a documentary, with pace and masterpieces chosen by a curator. This is a slower experience, closer to actually wandering about the museum yourself.
Due to the nature of the technology, which makes the visit beautiful but slow, I find the best way to use these virtual tours is to select a specific room or piece of art to see it in on-location or make the most of them to get a sense for the museums.
If you are planning a trip to Rome, these Rome museums’ virtual tours are also a good way to evaluate if a museum is worth adding to your itinerary .
I have found several articles with lists of museums offering virtual tours however, I also noticed that many of the links offered brought to tours that didn’t really work or simply to a list of images from the museum.
So for this article, I have curated a list of Rome museums whit virtual tours that actually work.
Here they are.
Rome museums with virtual tours + easy to follow instructions for visiting
Musei Vaticani – Vatican Museums Virtual Tour
The Vatican Museums, physically located in the center of Rome, have pages on their websites with 360 degrees video tours of several parts of the museums, including the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s basilica
They are not videos as such but 360 degrees images that you can move via cursor. The feeling is that of being inside the rooms and what is really cool is the ability to move the scene all the way up to the ceiling or all the way down to the floor, as if you were yourself moving around.
- The link to some of the rooms is this one
- The link to the tour of the Sistine chapel is here
Centrale Montemartini – Virtual Tour of Rome’s most peculiar museum
Centrale Montemartini is lesser known than the Vatican museums but it is wonderful and one I recommend not just to adults but families with kids too. It is one of my favorite kid-friendly museums in Rome actually!
It has a beautiful collection of ancient mosaics and Roman statues, with a twist: the masterpieces are hosted in an old power station and this means the backdrop to them are incredible industrial machines!
Find it intriguing? You should!
The tour is offered via google arts and culture, which you can access here
Follow the link below and then click on the little yellow figurine of a person on the right of the top image to get started. You can also find our guide to the Montemartini Museum here .
Musei Capitolini – Virtual Tour of one of Rome’s most famous museums
Musei Capitolini, the vast and beautiful art museum on top of the Capitoline Hill also offer a virtual tour.
You have a choice of two solutions
The first is again via google arts and culture, for which you only need an internet connection.
To access, click here , then click again on the yellow man on the right corner of the main image. A new page will open up with a selection of images from the museum: click on any that grabs your attention for a close-up!
If you have Flash player, you can also access the virtual tour offered by the museum itself here .
I personally find this second way to visit the museum way more enjoyable: I find the images clearer and the whole user experience smoother, however, it may take an extra minute for setting Flash Player up, should your computer not run it already (mine didn’t).
Thankfully, getting Flash is easy and free, as you can easily download it from the museum page itself. When given the options, follow the link and follow the prompts. I promise, it is very easy!
Mercati di Traiano -Trajan’s Market Rome Museum virtual Tour
Trajan’s markets are one of the most beautiful and interesting archaeological areas in Rome and one of the most underrated. I always recommend tourists to go visit and I was delighted to discover they also have a virtual your option and of excellent quality.
You can visit them virtually taking the tour form the museum site or via google arts and culture site.
The links are respectively:
Museum virtual tour (required flash player, follow the prompt from the museum page to install it if needed, it is free and easy to do)
Google arts and culture tour : click on the little yellow figurine and then on any image for a close up.
The markets give a wonderful insight into the history of the expansion of the Roman Empire and a shed a light on some aspects of Roman architecture very different yet equally beautiful to that found in the Roman Forum.
Museo dell’Ara Pacis virtual tour
The Ara Pacis is a huge altar (‘Ara’) dating back to 13-9BC. It was built to celebrate the return of Augustus from his military campaigns is Gallia and Spain and wanted to celebrate the start of a long period of peace ( pax, pacis in Latin, hence the name ‘ara pacis’, Peace Altar).
The altar is a wonderful example of Roman sculpture and a virtual tour of t works particularly well as it allows you to see the details from close up.
You can access it two ways:
Via google arts and culture here (not really a virtual tour, but a selection of images you can move around and see in close up)
Or via the museum itself, here . This is a much better and enjoyable option, however, it requires the use of Flash Player, which not all computers have. You can download it safely and fro free following the prompts on the museum page.
Museo Napoleonico – Napoleon’s Museum Rome Virtual Tour
Very different from the museums above but worth a visit is the Rome Napoleon’s Museum dedicated, as you guessed, to Napoleon himself!
As well as a good collection, I like this museum for its elegant interiors, which you can appreciate surprisingly well wit the virtual tour provided. Have a look here , aren’t the rooms themselves just wonderful?
Like for the museums above, Flash Player is needed: just follow the prompts on the page for a free download (no computer skills required!)
Carlo Bilotti Museum Rome Virtual Tour
A hugely underrated yet important museum in Rome is the Museum Carlo Bilotti, located in stunning Villa Borghese , an absolute must-see in Rome.
The museum has masterpieces by De Chirico, Warhol and Manzu and is a real hidden gem worth seeking our virtually and when in Rome!
You can visit it following this link to Google Arts and Culture . Click on the yellow figurine for a selection of images and then click on any that picks your interest for a closer look.
Museo di Villa Torlonia -Villa Torlonia Museum
Villa Torlonia is one of the most beautiful parks in Rome and one with important historical buildings with wonderfully decorated interiors.
The Villa is slightly out of the center of Rome and you may not be able to include it in your wanderings if you only have a day or two in Rome, however, it is worth seeing and a virtual tour may actually be the most convenient way to do so!
You can take the tour via the Museo di Villa Torlonia website itself clicking here (flash player required, follow the prompt to install if needed, it is free)
Or simply via the internet on the Google Arts and culture site here
I hope you enjoyed this overview of virtual tours of Rome museums you can take from the comfort of your own home and found the instruction to access them easy to follow.
Stay safe and happy museum ‘going’!

With insider tips on the best restaurants, tours, and activities, our guide has everything you need to make the most of your Rome vacation.
Rome is without doubt one the most beautiful cities in the world ; every year millions of tourists come from around the world to admire the treasures and masterpieces of Roman art and architecture .
Rome is an enchanting city where you'll discover a romantic blend of culture and history spiced up with a vibrant street and nightlife. Add in to the mix delicious gastronomy and excellent Italian wines, and you have an inspiring and beautiful destination that our Rome travel guide will help you make the most of.
What are the best things to do in Rome?
The beauties of Rome sprawl across its landscape and are a compelling blend of the ancient with the Renaissance. Classically imposing are the Colosseum and the Roman Forum while the austere exterior of the Pantheon belies its stunning interior. St Peter's Square and Basilica are Renaissance masterpieces while gloriously ornate fountains and statues greet you at every twist and turn of the city's streets.
The most iconic example is Salvi's Trevi Fountain. Dominating the small cobbled avenue in which it sits, this fountain is an outrageous example of over-the-top Baroque sculpture, and is immediately recognisable from its appearance in classic films such as ' Three Coins in a Fountain ' and Federico Fellini's screen masterpiece, ' La Dolce Vita '.
When you enter Rome 's churches, cathedrals, museums, and galleries you'll find awe-inspiring paintings and sculptures that cover all the eras and great names of Western art. These range from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling to frescoes by Raphael and paintings that show the skill of Caravaggio to the glorious fountains of Bernini. A trip to Rome , though, encompasses much more than a stroll through art and architecture. Sipping a coffee or aperitif in street cafes, or enjoying a glass of beer while you take in the vistas from terraces and piazzas are just as much a part of the tourist experience in this most romantic of cities.
It's easy to while away a whole day in The Vatican City, west of the River Tiber. When you do, you're entering the world's smallest state. Cross the Tiber and pass the imposing might of the Castel Sant'Angelo before entering the Vatican along the Via Della Conciliazione. At the end, the vastness of St. Peter's Square with its grand Bernini colonnade and central obelisk opens up before you.
Across the square is St. Peter's Basilica topped by the tallest dome in the world. Taking the stairs or elevator to the viewing gallery is a must for splendid views of the Eternal City.
While it's easy to fill a visit to Rome with the cultural wonders found in every guidebook, it also has a secret side . Some of the city's population of wild cats live pampered lives at the Torre Argentina excavation site, happily posing for the cameras of passers-by while the French-style gardens of Doria Pamphili near the Trastevere district are often overlooked by visitors. The final resting place of the English Romantics , Shelley and Keats is in Rome. They lie in the beautiful Protestant cemetery on Via Caio Cestio. With its grand marble monuments, it provides a peaceful respite from the city bustle.
What is the best time of year to visit Rome?
Rome is a popular tourist destination right around the year so use our travel tips to help plan your visit. In August, many locals take their vacations and head to the coast, so although the city is quieter be prepared for some neighbourhood shops and restaurants to be closed. Easter's Holy Week is always a busy period so booking your hotel well in advance is advisable.
With most museums closed on Mondays, the Vatican museums closed on Sundays, and the city filling up with short-break visitors every weekend, be flexible with your travel plans and visit from Tuesday to Friday. Not only museums and visitor attractions, but cafes and restaurants will be slightly less crowded.
What is the weather and climate like in Rome?
Try and avoid the summer months when temperatures rarely dip below 30°C. In contrast, the ideal months for getting the most out of Rome's cafes and terraces are April, May, September, and October. To really beat the crowds, though, think about visiting during the winter months. You'll need a warm coat and probably an umbrella, but temperatures never dip below freezing.

Virtual tour of Rome
Several companies have made virtual Rome tour videos, using 360 videos and some VR technology – mostly covering the city’s highlights so you can pick the one whose commentary you prefer.
This 360-degree video tour from You Visit lets you pick your own sights and attractions, or you can simply let it play through.
Otherwise try this virtual tour of Rome lasting less than five minutes while this slightly longer tour is designed to be experienced using VR headsets, although you can also watch the 360-degree video on YouTube.
Virtual Rome sights
If you prefer to flick through Rome’s key sites at your own pace, the Google Arts & Culture project has a slideshow of some of the city’s highlights including more background.
It’s not interactive beyond that, so if you’re looking for more of a virtual Rome tour of some of the museums, scroll down.
Ancient Rome
Alternatively you can step back in time to discover Rome as it once was – a sight which you can only see virtually these days, with the Rome Reborn initiative.
Designed to be viewed on computers and VR headsets, you can explore the ancient city with computer reconstructions of the buildings and monuments, accompanied by a commentary from experts.
The free trial is over but you can still pay to explore sites like the Roman Forum . Still cheaper than a plane ticket, and a great introduction if you’re planning a city break in Rome.
Rome Street art
While Rome’s historic attractions are one of its biggest draws, there are plenty of modern temptations among the ancient.
Take a street art tour to discover some of the more recent artworks adorning the Eternal City – there are two to try: click here or here .
Virtual Rome art & culture
Take a walk through the Sistine chapel, wander Trajan’s markets or marvel at the roof of the Pantheon, all from the virtual comfort of your armchair.
Google’s arts and culture project is another great place to start to check out some of Rome’s landmarks and museums – you can see the complete set here as well as those which more detailed virtual tours to scroll for more but here are some of the highlights.
Take a virtual tour of the Colosseum – you’re limited as to how much you can see inside, but there are several options to explore the exterior online.
Take your first view from the sky , looking down onto the remains of the structure, built to seat 80,000 people, with this 360-degree aerial view.
Then soak up the sight of the world’s largest amphitheatre in the Italian sun before getting a little closer to the structure . Finally head inside to get a closer glimpse of the Colosseum’s interior .
Trevi fountain
The legend says that if you throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain, you’ll return to Rome – throwing two or three should also bring you love and marriage.
While you can’t lob a Euro into the water virtually, you can still get a look at the largest Baroque fountain in the city – and be secretly thankful you don’t have to battle the crowds.
The Pantheon
This former Roman temple, now a Catholic church, is famous for both its dome – still the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome, 2,000 years after it was built – and for the oculus, the opening to the sky in the centre of it. This 360-degree video lets you look up at the famous ceiling and imagine the building soaring overhead.
Roman Forum
Take a look down into the remains of the Roman Forum , once the heart of Ancient Rome.
Trajan’s Market
While most visitors flock to the Roman Forum, the Mercati di Traiano is another fascinating spot to wander around, and you can get a virtual tour of Rome’s Trajan’s Market too. The Google arts and culture tour is more detailed than some of the other better-known historic sites, letting you virtually walk through as well as exploring some of the objects on display.
Even better is the museum’s own virtual tour – you need flash player to make this work – which lets you virtually wander through the halls before heading outside.
Sistine Chapel
The Sistine Chapel is only one part of the Vatican Museums Virtual Tour that you can take but it’s easily one of the highlights – watching online, you can see as much detail as you’d like in the chapel , and there’s no fast-moving queue to shuttle you out too quickly either.
The Vatican museums currently have 360-degree video tours of seven different rooms , including the astonishing art work of Raphael’s Rooms.
There’s also an impressive virtual tour of St Peter’s Basilica letting you see the famous church’s details but also giving an impression of the soaring grandeur of the nave.
Capitoline Museum
Take a virtual tour of Rome’s Musei Capitolini, the art museum set on top of the Campidoglio hill. The museum has its own virtual tour (using flash) where you can wander through the halls as well as looking around the Campidoglio square as well.
Or try the Google Arts and Culture tour which gives you a little more detail, so you can look at some of the pieces on display inside the museum.
Museo dell’Ara Pacis virtual tour
The huge altar of the Ara Pacis might not be Rome’s best known sculpture, but it’s perfect for a virtual tour. The museum itself has its own 360-degree video to help you look around.
Or Google Arts and Culture has another virtual tour allowing you to see close up, along with some history about the inspiration behind the 2,000-year-old altar celebrating the military campaigns of Augustus.
Teatro dell’Opera in Rome
Step inside the opera house to take a look around, hear from its director and get a glimpse of performances.

8 Virtual Museum Tours in Rome
Discover These Museums Online During Lockdown
While the lockdowns imposed during the past twelve months have limited our ability to experience all Rome has to offer, many exquisite art exhibitions housed in the city are available to tour via the New Virtual Tours of Civic Museums . The site , launched on February 16th, is an online platform that allows users to virtually discover eight different museums. All through a click of a mouse or a tap on your smartphone! The incredible technology allows for a 360-degree viewing of the pieces, which features museums: Capitoline, Ara Pacis, Napoleonic, Trajan’s Market-Museum of the Imperial Forum, Casino Nobile di Villa Torlonia, Centrale Montemartini, Museum of the Walls and Museum of Rome . Through the impressive 360 technology offered by the virtual tour, you are able to really visualize the magnitude and impressive collections that each museum has to offer.
Capitoline Museums
The virtual tour of the Capitoline Museums allows the user to explore the vast collection of art pieces held within, from paintings and sculptures to pieces from ancient Egypt. A highlight while virtually exploring this museum includes the chapel located within Capitoline’s Palazzo dei Conservatori. The chapel is decorated with beautiful frescos that cover the entirety of the ceiling as well as intricate stucco designs created between 1575 and 1578 by artists Michele Alberti and Jacopo Rocchetti. Another mesmerizing room captured by the visual tour is the Hall of Emperors which is located within Capitolne’s New Palace. Simply by clicking your mouse upon each structure, you are able to learn the name of the piece, a short description of its style and significance as well as the time period it is from.
As you virtually make your way through the Ara Pacis Museum , you are able to explore the building and its compositions in a more in depth way than you would if visiting in person, as the virtual tour allows you to experience everything not only from ground level, but also from above, really allowing the visitor to get a grasp at how impressive each structure is. By clicking upon your mouse or tapping on your screen, you are provided with an up close and high definition image of every corner of each piece, allowing you to see that these pieces have survived thousands of years and done so with such grace and beauty.
Napoleonic Museum
Upon your arrival into the Napoleonic Museum , you are directed through the ‘Points of Interest’ dropdown, which leads you into each exquisitely decorated room. While each museum displayed as part of this virtual tour opportunity is quite impressive, the Napoleonic Museum is rather memorable in that it allows you to explore history and stories lasting over a century through the three distinct periods displayed throughout which include: The Napoleonic Period, the first empire or the so-called “Roman” period and lastly the Second Empire period. There is really something of interest for everyone within his museum, as shown through the variety of pieces and time periods offered, from the Costume Gallery to the stunning oil canvas paintings depicting figures like Elisa Bonapoarte Baciocchi.
INSPIRATION Free Museums In Rome

A Smithsonian magazine special report
Ambitious VR Experience Restores 7,000 Roman Buildings, Monuments to Their Former Glory
You can take an aerial tour of the city circa 320 A.D. or stop by specific sites for in-depth exploration
Meilan Solly
Associate Editor, History
Ever wish you could step into a hot air balloon, travel back in time to 320 A.D., and soar over the streets of Ancient Rome? Well, that oddly specific fantasy is achievable in a new virtual reality experience called “ Rome Reborn .”
The ambitious undertaking, painstakingly built by a team of 50 academics and computer experts over a 22-year period, recreates 7,000 buildings and monuments scattered across a 5.5 square mile stretch of the famed Italian city. The project, according to Tom Kington of the Times , is being marketed as the largest digital reconstruction of Rome to date.
Director Bernard Frischer , a digital archaeologist at Indiana University, tells Agence France-Presse that “Rome Reborn” features multiple VR experiences: You can opt for a whirlwind flyover tour of the city or stop by a specific site, such as the Roman forum or the Basilica of Maxentius .
For now, the forum and basilica are the only two landmarks available for in-depth exploration, but tours of the Colosseum, the Pantheon and other top attractions are expected to debut this year or next.
The “ Flight Over Ancient Rome ” experience, currently available via VR headsets and computers, takes participants on a roughly two-hour highlights tour that includes stops at more than 35 points of interest, including the imperial fora and palace, the Circus Maximus, and the tombs of emperors Augustus and Hadrian. All of these sites are seen from above, providing a unique aerial perspective the website touts as a chance to see “how the individual buildings and monuments fit into a larger pattern of urban organization.”
Comparatively, the two site visits place users in the driver’s seat, affording them freedom to roam through reconstructed streets and halls while learning key facts via a helpful in-app tour guide. The Basilica of Maxentius , a monumental civic building commissioned by the emperor Maxentius prior to his defeat at the hands of rival Constantine, is particularly impressive due to its vibrant interior and restored statue of the conquering emperor, who later oversaw the Roman Empire’s transition into a Christian state.
The Forum, a marketplace of sorts that served as the center of the ancient city, also reveals an impressive attention to detail: As archaeologist Paolo Liverani of the University of Florence explains to the Times ’ Kington, researchers used studies on the flooring of the Forum—including an illustration found on the Arch of Constantine —to render the virtual model accurately. VR experts even collaborated with historians to ensure that sunlight correctly bounced off of the Forum’s gold-gilded statues.
Frischer tells AFP that he and his colleagues chose to set their virtual world in 320 A.D. because they had the most information on that period, which allowed them to go into greater detail. Additionally, he explains , the year represented a critical turning point for Rome, as it experienced a burst of architectural energy and saw its population cross the 1 million threshold. Just 10 years later, Constantine moved the imperial capital east to Constantinople , signaling the end of Rome’s position as the center of the empire.
Today, little of the sumptuous world seen in “Rome Reborn” remains, a fact emphasized by the app’s “Time Warp” feature. By toggling between the structures’ past glory and present-day dilapidation, history lovers gain an even greater appreciation of just what was achieved during Rome's glory days.

Ancient Rome comes to life with virtual aerial tour
Travel back in time to see rome's landmarks as they looked in the fourth century ..
Flyover Zone, a pioneer in the emerging field of virtual tourism, has released a remastered version of its virtual aerial tour of ancient Rome.
Rome Reborn 4.0 updates the graphics used in earlier versions of the virtual tour developed by leading digital archaeologist Professor Bernard Frischer.
Rome Reborn 4.0. Photo Flyover Zone.
The narrated tour in English, available as an app or online at Yorescape , digitally reconstructs Rome as it appeared at its peak in 320 AD, a decade before Emperor Constantine moved the capital of the Roman Empire to Constantinople.
The 3D rendering features a bird's eye view of more than 40 landmarks including the Colosseum, the Circus Maximus, the Mausoleum of Augustus, the Pantheon and the Baths of Caracalla.
On Wednesday, November 8, Flyover Zone is releasing Rome Reborn 4.0, our digital reconstruction of ancient Rome! Professor Frischer says the 'Flight over Ancient Rome' tour is designed for both academic study and virtual tourism, describing it as the “culmination of more than 27 years of historical research applied to the use of innovative digital tools”.
“We hope to make it easy and fun for people to learn about ancient Rome and its cultural heritage," Frischer told Italian news agency ANSA, adding that the virtual tour can help tourists prepare for their visit to the Eternal City as well as keep their memories alive once they return home.

Classroom Ideas
Ancient Timeline
Create a timeline that shows what was happening in each of the Ancient Civilizations at certain points in time. For example, who created calendars and at what point in time? Who was building pyramids and when?
Work as a class to build an arch that Ancient Roman’s used for their buildings. You could use boxes, plastic containers, etc. This will give students an sense that this simple idea takes a lot more time and ingenuity to build.
Discussion Topic
After studying a specific ancient civilization (Ancient Greece, Romans, Mayans, Egypt, etc. ), have a class discussion about what a day in the life of a person would be like.
Archaeology
Contact your local college or university to see if they have an archaeology program. If so, see if your class can visit them and learn what has been discovered by structures and buildings left behind different ancient civilizations.
Create a diorama of Ancient Rome.
Greek vs. Roman Gods & Goddesses
The Ancient Greek and Roman Gods and Goddesses were much the same, but had different names. Have students come up with the list of both Greek and Roman names for their gods.
Gods and Goddesses
Study the different Roman Gods and Goddesses. Have each student choose one and either dress like on, create a sculpture, or paint a picture of the Roman God or Goddess that was chosen. They can explain what they learned and why they chose that specific God or Goddess.
Ancient Civilization Comparisons
Divide your class into smaller groups, with each group responsible for further researching how each ancient civilization has benefited the world. They need to bring props to show (photos, food, items that represents tools and discoveries by each group).
Create Quizzes
Students create a quiz based on the information presented for their peers. This can be used as a review for a test, or jigsaw class activity where students are responsible for teaching other students assigned topics.

In pics: Virtual tour of ‘Heeramandi’ star Sonakshi Sinha’s beautiful home
Posted: 8 May 2024 | Last updated: 8 May 2024
The 'real gold'
The Bollywood beauty, Sonakshi Sinha has turned heads for her acting and elegance in 'Heeramandi'. Sonakshi, back in 2023, had her rome renovated and credited the architects 'Rajiv and Ekta Parekh' for turning her dream home into a reality. Here is a virtual tour of her home.
Beautiful ambience
Without even looking at interiors and decor, it is a sure shot that the ambience of the home is immaculate. The lush sofa, beautiful colours, and the blood red colours on the cushion look out of the world!
Perfect golden hour shots
Giving a hint about the perfect placement and height is this beautiful shot of Sonakshi during the golden hour. The room she is in looks well-lit naturally and the sunshine makes for the perfect aesthetics.
Breezy outdoors
The balcony looks elegant and chic with perfect seating, wood work, and a beautiful height to have the perfect views.
Curved white sofa
A beautiful shot of Sonakshi, and a beautiful sofa in the background. The white sofa behind looks perfect and really adds up to the aesthetic of the space. From the brown, wooden floor to the chic white sofa, the decor is mind-blowing.
A splendid sight!
With beautiful flowers in the extreme end of the room and a gradient table in between, this is one of the pictures Sonakshi shared to thank the architects and show the world the beauty they created.
Pretty in pink
The perfect space for a workout and then some cooling down is this room. With a beautiful mauve-pink room, a circle mirror, and a small monstera plant, this room gives a really chic aesthetic.
A dream bedroom
Sonakshi's bedroom is a dream come true! The beautiful blue colour, the pink curtains, and the minimal bed really enhance the calm energy that is present in the room.
The main hall
A beautiful, multi-level table in the center, a vintage-looking rug below, some really beautiful wooden cabinets, and a view of the outside, this is what sums up Sonakshi's dreamy main hall.
