You can squeeze many of Qatar's must-dos into a short stopover © Maja Topcagic / Stocksy United

With one of the fastest-growing tourism hubs in the Middle East, Qatar has been busy establishing itself on the global visitor map.

A cheap and efficient new metro system opened in 2019 making it now easier than ever to experience the Gulf nation’s ever-expanding array of attractions. With the bulk of things to see and do located in the capital of Doha , you might be surprised by how many must-dos you can squeeze into a short stopover.

Qatar is smaller than the US state of Connecticut, so it doesn’t demand as much time to explore as its larger neighbors. Here are 14 things to do in Qatar that are worth shuffling to the top of your itinerary.

Marvel at Doha’s next-level museums and galleries

Rising up from a purpose-built island off Doha’s Corniche , the postmodern fortress-styled Museum of Islamic Art is Qatar’s showpiece gallery, housing the largest collection of Islamic art on the planet. In 2019, it was joined by another unmissable cultural institution. Rebuilt to resemble a desert rose, the name for the crystal clusters found in the Qatari desert, the National Museum of Qatar charts the nation’s history with the help of 21st-century technology.

But these aren’t Qatar’s only museums and galleries worth seeking out. Mathaf , the Arab Museum of Modern Art, showcases a vast collection of contemporary art with an Arab connection, while the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum , which opened in 2022, is a sophisticated ode to sports.

Textile shop along the street in the Souq Waqif area in Doha, Qatar

Get lost in Souq Waqif

In the heart of Doha, the sprawling Souq Waqif complex is one of the most atmospheric corners of Qatar, best visited in the evenings when it brims with locals. Built on an ancient market site, Souq Waqif was redeveloped in the noughties to look like a 19th-century souq (market), with mud-rendered shops and exposed timber beams, plus some beautifully restored heritage buildings.

Despite the rise of Qatar’s mega-malls, the Souq Waqif remains at the heart of social and commercial life in Doha, one of the few places where people from all rungs of society come together to feast on regional cuisine, shop for everything from antique daggers to custom thobes (traditional robe commonly worn by men on the Arabian Peninsula) or simply sip karak (cardamom) tea and watch the world go by.

The Falcon Souq offers a fascinating insight into a favorite Qatari pastime, though some visitors may find the leashed falcon displays distressing. Nearby stables house Arabian horses, and just off the Corniche end of Al Jasra Street, a pen is usually filled with camels.

Go off-roading to Qatar’s iconic “inland sea”

Sign up for a thrilling 4WD off-roading adventure to Khor Al Adaid , Qatar’s spectacular “inland sea,” where enormous shifting sand dunes meet the azure waters of a unique tidal embayment system that creates a natural border between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Organized tours offered by the likes of 365 Adventures typically run for four hours, with the dunes beginning around an hour south of Doha, just beyond Sealine Beach .

The historic Al Zubarah Fort, a former military fortress, stands in the Qatar desert

Visit Qatar’s only Unesco World Heritage Site

The most prominent feature of Qatar’s Unesco-listed Al Zubarah Archaeological Site, Al Zubarah Fort was built in 1938 to guard the nation’s northwest coast. Used by the military until the 1980s, the fortress has since been restored and turned into a museum. Inside there are displays showcasing the history and pearling heritage of Al Zubarah, a once thriving pearling port abandoned in the early 20th century. A 1.5-hour drive from Doha, the fort is the only part of the site currently open to the public, but if you stand outside and look toward the sea, you can just make out the sprawling ruins of the long-abandoned town.

Seek out the mysterious Al Jassasiya Rock Carvings

This profusion of petroglyphs – nearly 900 rock carvings depicting rosettes, fish, dhow boats, and more – on a rocky outcrop in northeastern Qatar is one of the nation’s biggest mysteries. Up close you may feel underwhelmed by the poorly preserved shapes, but imagining communities here hundreds (perhaps thousands) of years ago is still an evocative experience.

Some archaeologists have suggested the petroglyphs, located 90km (56 miles) north of Doha, could date back to the 3rd century BC, while other experts believe they were created between the 10th and 18th centuries AD. Signboards offer some background information and maps of the site, but that’s currently the extent of its tourist facilities.

Explore the ultra-modern Msheireb Downtown district

In the heart of Doha, the Msheireb Downtown district bills itself as the world’s first sustainable Downtown regeneration project. While the marketing should perhaps be taken with a grain of salt, there’s no denying that this compact precinct – blending Islamic and contemporary design elements – is architecturally stunning. While most of the buildings are brand new, four heritage houses have been beautifully restored and opened to the public as the Msheireb Museums .

Msheireb is also home to the M7 design and innovation hub, which has hosted fashion exhibitions by the likes of Christian Dior and Hermès since opening in late 2021. A free tram runs through the district, which is dotted with restaurants and luxury hotels.

Eat your way around the world without leaving Doha

Qatar’s melting pot of cultures – less than 12% of the population is ethnic Qatari – has birthed an incredibly diverse food scene that makes dining out in Doha a joy. While hotel restaurants tend to focus on European, Latin, and East Asian cuisines, Doha’s proliferation of migrant-run restaurants serve up a huge range of authentic, affordable eats from the Middle East, the Subcontinent, and beyond, with some top wallet-friendly eats including Turkey Central for excellent mezze and grilled meats and Bandar Aden for hearty Yemeni dishes. You don’t have to go far in Doha to find a terrific Indian meal.

Seek out Qatar’s excellent public art

Not all of Qatar’s art acquisitions are hidden away in museums. With a reported arts spending budget of around US$1 billion, the nation is constantly adding to its public art collection. In Souq Waqif, you can’t miss Pouce , a giant golden digit modeled on the late French sculptor César Baldaccini’s own thumb, while multiple works can be found in MIA Park and Katara Cultural Village .

Farther afield in the Education City precinct, look out for The Miraculous Journey , a series of 14 bronze sculptures by Damien Hirst, and US artist Richard Serra’s huge East–West/West–East installation rising out of the western desert. Even Hamad International Airport has a dozen-odd pieces of art, including a huge golden falcon by Dutch sculptor Tom Claassen that’s perched on a railing outside the departures hall.

The Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque is the national mosque of Qatar, named after the Muslim preacher and scholar who founded the Wahhabism Islamic Sect

Admire the national mosque

Doha’s impressive modern Imam Muhammad Ibn Abd Al Wahhab Mosque , the largest mosque in the country, has a fort-like appearance, with more than two dozen domes on its roof. It’s perhaps more striking from the outside, particularly at dusk when the mosque's arches and domes are attractively illuminated.

Taking a peek inside its cavernous, largely unadorned prayer hall is allowed outside of prayer times and should be arranged in advance with a local tour agency or through the Sheikh Abdulla Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center in Souq Waqif.

View of Katara beach at Katara Cultural Village

Spend a morning wandering Katara

This purpose-built cultural precinct can feel a bit Disneyland-ish, but Katara is still worth a visit, even just to see its two splendid mosques: the glittering, gold-tiled Golden Mosque and Katara Mosque with its beautifully ornate ceramic tiling. Katara’s numerous performance and gallery spaces include the classical Greek-style Katara Amphitheater, while the Al Thuraya Planetarium offers a crash course in Arabic astronomy.

Katara has a good selection of restaurants and food stalls, and it’s also home to Doha’s main public beach .

Camels race in Qatar desert

Catch a camel race

Camel racing took off in Qatar in the 1970s and remains a popular wintertime spectator sport, with races held at the Al Shahaniya camel racetrack west of Doha on Fridays from October to February. Major events – such as HH, the Emir’s Main Race – are also held in March and April. Pioneered in the 2000s, robot jockeys are now used in Qatari camel races. This shift effectively ended a cruel child labor industry once common in the Gulf, but visitors with animal welfare concerns should know that the robot jockeys are fitted with remote-controlled whips. While there’s no betting allowed, sponsors provide lucrative purses for race winners.

Wander the “Arabian Riviera” at The Pearl

Qatar’s answer to Dubai’s The Palm Jumeirah , The Pearl is a luxurious artificial island development on Doha’s northern fringe that, well, shows you  how oil and gas riches can be spent . The Pearl’s Porto Arabia precinct, encircling a yacht-studded marina, has a pleasant waterfront promenade lined with cafes and restaurants. But most visitors get a bigger kick out of visiting the Venetian-inspired Qanat Quartier, complete with canals, brightly colored apartment blocks, and even a replica Rialto Bridge. It’s a far cry from the real deal, but you’ll feel a world away from Qatar.

Get an unexpected culture hit at a new kind of wellness resort

Perched on Qatar’s northeastern tip, Zulal Wellness Resort offers an opportunity to experience Qatari culture in a whole new way. The first international outpost from iconic Thai wellness retreat Chiva-Som, the sprawling complex, officially opened in 2022, offers immersive stays guided by traditional Arabic and Islamic medicine. With everything from meals to wellness therapies (including children’s treatments) led by this ancient philosophy, stays offer a unique insight into lesser-known Qatari traditions, along with a luxe opportunity to decompress in a serene coastal setting.

Each of these luxury hotels will face one another in two grand towers, which combine to represent the two scimitar swords on Qatar’s national seal. Fairmont Doha will be inspired by mega-yacht design and a soaring lobby will house the world’s tallest chandelier, whereas Raffles Doha will be a suite-only property with a legendary butler service. Select dining and event spaces will be accessible during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.

Rosewood Doha

Katara Hills LXR Hotels

Inspired by Scandinavian architectural style and created with environment-friendly materials, 15 luxury villas will offer a private and peaceful escape from the city in the green paradise of Katara Hills.  Set to open this November.

DoubleTree by Hilton Doha Downtown

Just 10 minutes from the city centre and near to many of Qatar’s most popular attractions, this hotel opened in October and features over 250 spacious serviced apartments.

The new attractions build on a wave of new openings for visitors throughout 2022. March witnessed the opening of 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, the world’s most sophisticated modern museum dedicated to sport. The following month the extravagant shopping mall Place Vendôme opened its doors, featuring over 500 stores and an entertaining dancing fountain display. The Le Royal Méridien Doha hotel was then blended seamlessly into the new French-inspired mall this summer.

This year also saw other hotel openings such as the region’s largest wellness resort: Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som. This pioneering destination on the northern tip of Qatar blends traditional Arabic and Islamic medicine to create immersive health and lifestyle resets, along with family-focused wellness journeys. Pullman Doha West Bay then opened in August, set in a stunning high-rise modern tower, and conveniently situated in Doha’s West Bay district.

In 2021 there were lots of other exciting openings. The theme park Quest Doha launched with over 30 rides including the world’s tallest indoor rollercoaster, and the world’s tallest indoor shot & drop tower. The luxury five-star Banyan Tree Doha opened with five opulent dining options and a Rainforest Hydrotherapy spa. The Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas also opened its doors with 3.5km of picturesque private beaches, and the Desert Falls Water and Adventure Park, one of the largest theme parks in the Middle East, opened with 28 slides and rides.

The tournament was originally set to begin a day later with Senegal's game against the Netherlands at Al Thumama Stadium but Qatar's match was moved forward to allow them to open their home tournament.

England will now feature on the second day with their Group B match against Iran scheduled to take place on November 21 with a 1pm UK time kick-off. The game is just eight days after the Premier League shuts down.

After qualifying via the play-offs, Wales' first game will also be on November 21.

Wales will then play England on November 29 in Group B.

The final will be played at the Lusail Stadium in Doha a week before Christmas on December 18.

2. The Amphitheatre

3. 21 High Street

This tourist attraction has gained quite popularity in recent years and gradually become one of the must-visit places in Qatar. Film City — a few also call it ‘Cinema City’ — has a mysterious backstory and it is probably one of the reasons why people are drawn to this place.

No one really knows what has happened and the true story behind this, but the Film City has not been explored by many yet and has an intriguing vibe, something that visitors chase after.

As a replica of an ancient Arabic village, this tourist attraction is also one of the offbeat destinations for tourists to escape from the crowd.

It was 115 degrees on the summer day I arrived in Qatar. That answered my first question: Why had FIFA, among the most hidebound and conservative of international sports bodies, agreed to buck nearly a century of tradition by playing the World Cup in the winter?

The second question was a bit more complicated: Why had Qatar, a tiny, conservative, Islamic emirate in the Persian Gulf worked so hard and spent so much to play host to the tournament?

FIFA World Cup posters covering West Bay skyscrapers in Doha, Qatar.

The World Cup kicks off Nov. 20 and over the following 28 days, more than 1.2 million people are expected to flood into a country that is smaller than Connecticut and has a population about equal to Chicago’s. The country and its unfailingly polite people have neither the space nor the patience to deal with more than a million rowdy soccer fans, many of whom know nothing of the country or its culture.

That, however, is the point, said Fatma Al-Nuaimi, executive communications director of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, the local World Cup organizing body.

“A lot of people will be coming here and they might have their own perceptions from what they read and what they hear,” she said after a late dinner at an Armenian-Lebanese restaurant in the trendy Katara Cultural Village, a sprawling waterfront collection of shops, restaurants and museums. “When you come here, it’s totally different. You learn about new things, new culture, new traditions. It gives you a different perspective. For a lot of travelers, this is what they would be keen to look for and to explore and to enrich the experience they have outside the stadium.”

But will it be a Faustian bargain? By law and custom, alcohol consumption is tightly controlled in Qatar, homosexuality is prohibited, public displays of affection are a serious faux pas and some labor regulations are just a small step above indentured servitude.

To welcome the world, the country has given in on all those things. And while that was done to appease international critics, it hasn’t played well at home.

Then there’s the organization.

The final test event in September, a soccer match that drew 78,000 people, was beset by a series of logistical disasters, from long lines and air conditioning and PA system failures to concession stands selling out of water by halftime. In response, hundreds of civilians, including diplomats summoned back from overseas, have been called up for mandatory military service operating security checkpoints at World Cup stadiums.

But there’s also an upside. Qatar has become one of richest countries in the world thanks to large deposits of oil and natural gas, resources the government knows are nonrenewable. So it has already begun the long and laborious task of diversifying the economy.

Two years before the controversial vote that awarded the World Cup to Qatar, the country launched National Vision 2030, a multipronged plan to invest $200 billion in economic, social, human and environmental development and one designed, in part, to make the desert emirate a global destination for tourism, education and culture.

Qatar also invested heavily in sports tourism, staging more than 600 international events in the last decade, from the world track championships and a Formula 1 Grand Prix to international bowling, squash, table tennis and equestrian events. That has hurried along infrastructure spending on highway and light-rail construction and expansion of Hamad International Airport.

“These mega-events, there is part of it where it’s actually helping bridge gaps and cultures and bringing people closer together,” Al-Nuaimi said. “There is always a misperception of this part of the world, the Arab world, the Muslim world. Having 1 million fans coming to Qatar from all parts of the world, they will see a different image and having firsthand experience of the country itself.”

The real goal, she said, is to get the world to come sample Qatar, learn about its rich history and culture and hopefully shed prejudices.

But whether Qatar is ready or not, the 32-team tournament will kick off next month and if you’re one of the more than 2.8 million people who have tickets — or if you plan on skipping the madness and visiting the country sometime after the tournament — here’s a guide to help you navigate a most compelling and complicated country.

What you need to get into Qatar

A Qatar Airways Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

If you don’t have World Cup tickets by now, you’re probably going to have a hard time getting them. More than 90% of the approximately 3 million tickets had been claimed by mid-October, but FIFA is promising to continue selling at FIFA.com/tickets, through the end of the tournament on Dec. 18. Some tickets can also be found on the secondary market, although FIFA is urging fans to stay away from unauthorized websites.

But a ticket won’t be enough to get you into a game — or even the country. For that you’ll also need a digital Hayya fan ID card, which can be applied for at hayya.qatar2022.qa . World Cup visitors will need a valid ticket application number and a Hayya voucher code to book accommodations.

To enter the country under normal circumstances (a.k.a. when there is no World Cup), U.S. citizens need a visa waiver, also known as visa on arrival. You don’t have to apply for that ahead of time as the entire process takes place when you arrive in Qatar. You will need a valid passport, good for at least six months, confirmation of a return ticket and a debit or credit card to pay the $28 fee for a tourist visa. The visa is valid for 30 days and can be extended.

Starting Nov. 1, you will not need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and a negative PCR test to enter the country.

Here’s a tip for those traveling to Qatar on Qatar Airways: The airline offers something called Al Maha Services. For an additional fee, a dedicated airline employee will guide travelers through expedited immigration and customs formalities both on arrival and at departure. That can be a lifesaver, especially after the nearly 17-hour flight from Los Angeles.

Where to stay

A building decorate with the flags of the teams participating in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in the Qatari capital Doha.

Despite a massive construction boom during the 12-year run-up to the World Cup, Qatar has just more than 40,000 hotel rooms, far short of the inventory needed for an event like the World Cup. So the country has come up with a number of novel options that include housing visitors in fan villages and Bedouin-style desert tents. There are also apartments and villas with one to six bedrooms at prices ranging from $84 to $875 a night, and 4,000 staterooms on two cruise ships anchored in Doha Bay.

More than a half-a-dozen airlines have added 160 short daily shuttle flights from Dubai, Jeddah, Kuwait, Muscat and Riyadh, allowing fans to stay in neighboring countries and fly into Doha before and after games.

If all that sounds like too much of a hassle, or if you really don’t like soccer, visiting Qatar after the World Cup is a breeze.

What to do and see in Qatar besides the World Cup

People walk along an alley in in Doha's Souq Waqif.

Sampling Qatar means sampling its history, and Qataris are only too happy to share. My favorite haunt, a place I couldn’t spend enough time in, was the Souq Waqif, the city’s ancient marketplace.

A maze of narrow alleyways linked to a wide main plaza, the Souq long served as a trading post for Bedouin arriving by camel and travelers in small boats. Its merchants still gather every day, as they have for centuries, dressed in the traditional long white thobe and a loose headdress called a gutra , drinking strong Qatari coffee and arguing about the day’s news while selling traditional garments, jewels, spices, handicrafts and souvenirs.

The Souq, now easily accessible on the metro’s gold line, is also home to an array of dining options featuring food from Thailand, Turkey, India, Iran, Italy, Lebanon, Latin America, Morocco and Syria and elsewhere.

Falcons are displayed at the sixth edition of Katara International Hunting and Falcons Exhibition 2022.

On one edge of the marketplace is the Falcon Souq — the word “ souq ” translates as marketplace — where you can view, photograph and even hold the birds, which have a revered place in Qatari culture. Nearby is a state-of-the-art falcon hospital and just beyond that is a camel pen, home to dozens of animals.

If the Souq Waqif is a real-life history lesson, in recent years Qatar has also built several world-class museums to teach the country’s culture and heritage in a more formal way.

The National Museum of Qatar is a national museum in Doha, Qatar.

The National Museum of Qatar, which opened in 2019, is worth a visit just for the stunning work of architect Jean Nouvel, whose design was inspired by the desert rose. Inside, the museum tells Qatar’s story in a milelong journey through a series of galleries that provide multisensory experiences from multiple perspectives.

Equally impressive is the nearby Museum of Islamic Art, another architectural wonder by I.M. Pei, who was coaxed out of retirement at 91 to design the building. Constructed on an island off an artificial peninsula, the museum sits at the end of the Corniche, Doha’s scenic bayside promenade, and is accessible by two small bridges.

Doha Corniche, the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA).

The 480,000-square-foot museum, which reopened in early October after an 18-month renovation, houses more than 14 centuries of Islamic art from three continents, including metal work, ceramics, jewelry, textile and glass, as well as a priceless Quranic manuscript.

A more unique experience can be had at the Msheireb Museums, four historic heritage houses in the old part of the capital dedicated to the cultural and social development of Qatar. Of the four the Bin Jelmood House, which focuses on the history of slavery in the Arab Gulf, a practice that wasn’t outlawed in Qatar until 1952, is a must-see.

Inside, a projector beams a passage from an 1864 letter written by Abraham Lincoln: “If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong.” The exhibitions are particularly timely since much of Qatar’s World Cup infrastructure was built by migrant workers employed under the kafala system, an exploitative and barely-legal form of indentured servitude that, in many ways, replaced slavery. International criticism ahead of the World Cup led to reform of the kafala system and a new minimum-wage structure, though abuses remain widespread.

Another unique gem is the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum housed in Khalifa International Stadium, site of eight World Cup matches. At more than 200,000 square feet, the museum, which opened in March, is one of the largest in the world dedicated to sports. Among the items in the collection are a soccer ball from England’s 1888 FA Cup final, the bobsled used by the Jamaican team in the 1988 Winter Games, a baseball bat from Babe Ruth, boxing glove from Manny Pacquiaoand a Steffi Graf tennis racquet.

And while the focus of the interactive exhibits and artifacts is on global sport, the museum includes sections on such traditional Qatari favorites as falconry, pearl diving and camel racing .

Speaking of history, before the discovery of oil and natural gas Qatar’s economy was built around pearls. In the latter half of the 19th century, nearly half the population was involved in the pearl trade, with divers sailing dhow boats into the warm gulf waters and descending as deep as 130 feet to harvest clams for the treasure they hid inside.

That’s gone now but the old dhow harbor remains. Bay cruises in the long, thin-hulled boats with Doha’s futuristic skyline as a backdrop are a good way to mix the past and present.

Aerial view of The Pearl, upscale residential area in Doha.

Part of that modern skyline is the Pearl, a small man-made island divided into 12 districts of residential towers, hotels, luxury-brand shops from Maserati and Rolls-Royce showrooms to trendy restaurants and cafes offering everything from South American and Lebanese cuisine to confectioneries.

Between the Pearl and the towering office buildings of the West Bay is the Katara Cultural Village, home to restaurants, art galleries and cultural organizations as well as an open-air amphitheater , an opera house, a multipurpose cinema, a multipurpose conference hall and a beach.

Want to live the history of Qatar? Well, time recedes quickly when you leave the city for the desert. Consider a half-day sunset safari, camel rides, sandboarding or a tour of the inland sea, a Persian Gulf inlet at the border between Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

During the World Cup, more than 90 special events including music festivals, cultural displays and street performances will also take place.

Where to eat

A view of Souq Waqif, a marketplace in Doha, capital and most populous city of Qatar.

Qatari cuisine is mix of traditional Arab food. Machboos, the national dish, consists of rice and vegetables and either lamb or chicken. Seafood and dates are also staples. But given the ethnic makeup — more than 2.5 million of the country’s 2.9 million residents are not Qatari citizens — the country has become a gastronomic melting pot featuring world-class offerings from dozens of countries.

As mentioned earlier, the Souq Waqif has a wide array of options served in a comfortable but traditional (read: budget-conscious) style. I’d recommend starting there since even the most finicky palates will find something to their tastes.

The Katara Cultural Village is another reasonably priced food court worth roaming, with cafes, chocolatiers, sandwich and fast-food places serving Greek, Italian, Egyptian, Mexican dishes and more, as well as upscale restaurants offering Palestinian, Western European, Italian and Asian food.

My favorite place was Mamig, a home-style restaurant — the name means grandmother in Armenian — serving a deep menu of Armenian and Lebanese offerings.

Many of Doha’s pricier restaurants are located in hotels, beginning with the Saffron, which offers both delectable Thai food and a breathtaking view from the top floor of the 31-story Banyan Tree hotel in Mushaireb, the heart of the old city.

The Spice Market in the Doha Hotel and Residences in the West Bay serves Southeast Asian-inspired fare from chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Also in the West Bay, Hakkasan, a Michelin-starred brand with locations worldwide, serves Chinese food in a uniquely designed dining room or on the terrace.

Nobu, the Japanese restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel on the Corniche, offers a unique experience beginning with your entrance up a floating driveway, over a bridge crossing a reflecting pool and into a three-story building designed by David Rockwell. The most popular dishes are black cod yuzu miso and wagyu beef tacos.

In the trendy Pearl District, Toro Toro serves authentic Latin American dishes from chef Richard Sandoval before a stunning view of the bay. Sandoval has another place in the West Bay called Zengo that serves Asian fare, including sushi, sashimi and curry on the 61st floor of the Kempinski Residences & Suites.

Where to drink

Qatar is a Muslim country where Sharia law holds sway, so alcohol consumption is tightly controlled and it cannot be purchased in stores.

Licensed hotel bars and restaurants are the only places allowed to sell alcohol, but not all of them do. It’s not available in the Souq Waqif, for example, and of the restaurants listed above, Mamig does not serve alcohol. Call ahead or check a restaurant’s policy before making reservations — and if you do find a place that serves alcohol, be prepared to pay $15 or more for a simple beer unless you take advantage of happy hour, which most bars and restaurants offer.

Local laws have been eased somewhat for the World Cup, with organizers allowing beer consumption at the Arcadia Electronic Music Festival, a fan fest about two miles outside Doha, will feature three performance stages and beer will be served there between 10 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Beer is also available at the official FIFA fan festival at Doha’s Al Bidda Park and to ticket-holders at select areas inside the perimeters of World Cup stadiums prior to kickoff and after the final whistle. Only nonalcoholic beverages will be served inside the stadiums themselves.

Keep in mind there is zero tolerance for drinking in public outside these areas and being drunk in public is a crime in Qatar.

Need more information? The Qatar 2022 Contact Center offers 24/7 support in eight languages.

Additionally, from Nov. 1 to Dec. 25, there will be a Consular Services Center at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center which will provide direct access to embassy staff from the 32 qualified countries and countries with the highest number of ticket sales. The center will operate daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ qualifying resumed on Wednesday

World champions France held as UEFA qualifying kicked-off

Road to Qatar 2022 also commenced in the Concacaf region with five matches

After a long wait, FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ qualifiers finally kicked-off in the UEFA and Concacaf zones on Wednesday. There were some surprising scorelines in Europe, with France held 1-1 at home by Ukraine, Croatia losing to Slovenia and Turkey outgunning three-time World Cup runners-up the Netherlands. There were also important wins for Serbia and Belgium.

FIFA.com summarises all the results, action and standout statistics. Live coverage of Qatar 2022 qualifiers will resume on Thursday with a lone AFC match and more action from the UEFA and Concacaf regions.

A 36th-minute own-goal proved enough for Portugal to beat Azerbaijan. Only an excellent performance from Shahruddin Mahammadaliyev kept the visitors in the game in the first half, with Cristiano Ronaldo denied on multiple occasions. Azerbaijan delivered a spirited second-half performance, giving their opponents a couple of scares on the counter-attack. Portugal extended their record winning streak in World Cup qualifiers to ten games.

Serbia 3-2 Republic of Ireland

The Irish, without a goal in their last seven matches, ended that drought through Alan Browne's towering back-post header. Dusan Vlahovic levelled for the hosts with a smart left-foot finish into the bottom-right corner before substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic put them ahead with a glorious chip from 30 yards. Mitrovic then completed the turnaround with a soaring leap and header to become his country's joint all-time leading scorer, with James Collins' scrappy late effort a mere consolation for the visitors.

France 1-1 Ukraine

Antoine Griezmann curled in a beautiful goal to open the scoring, moving him level with David Trezeguet in joint-fourth in the list of France's all-time scorers on 34 goals behind leader Thierry Henry, Olivier Giroud and Michel Platini. Serhii Sydorchuk equalised for Ukraine after his shot just inside the penalty area took a massive deflection off Presnel Kimpembe before nestling into the corner of the net.

Finland 2-2 Bosnia and Herzegovina

After a goalless first half, the match burst into life in the second with Bosnia's star man Miralem Pjanic tucking away a close-range effort after Finland goalkeeper Jesse Joronen saved his initial penalty kick. However, Finland's star striker Teemu Pukki replied soon after, reacting after a shot hit off the crossbar. Pukki then completed his brace, finishing off a counter-attack for the Finns by calmly slotting past Ibrahim Sehic, before Miroslav Stevanovic equalised for the visitors.

Belgium 3-1 Wales

Wales took a shock lead when Gareth Bale split the Belgium defence with a gorgeous through-ball for Harry Wilson , who slotted home. Belgium responded admirably though, with a fine Kevin De Bruyne strike and a Thorgan Hazard header putting them in front. Romelu Lukaku extended the advantage from the spot in the 73rd minute.

Estonia 2-6 Czech Republic

A 16-minute Tomas Soucek hat-trick powered Czech Republic to a 6-1 win in Estonia. The West Ham United midfielder went into the game having scored just four times in 30 caps. In-form Bayer Leverkusen forward Patrik Schick continued a goal and two assists.

Turkey 4-2 Netherlands

Hosts Turkey took a 15th-minute lead when Burak Yilmaz's toe-poke flashed past Tim Krul via a cruel deflection off Mathijs de Ligt. The Netherlands pushed hard for an equaliser but were once again caught out on the break, with Yilmaz doubling his tally from the penalty spot, wrong-footing Krul after Donyell Malen had been penalised for a clumsy late challenge. Hakan Calhanoglu stunned Frank de Boer's team with a third within seconds of the restart, firing a low 25-yard shot beyond the flat-footed Krul. Just as the Dutch appeared to be running out of ideas, substitute Davy Klaasen pulled a goal back with a superb turn and finish and, seconds later, Luuk de Jong scrambled the ball home from close range. But Yilmaz completed his first international hat-trick - and settled Turkish nerves - with a glorious free-kick, whipped into the top-right corner from 20 yards.

Gibraltar 0-3 Norway

Norway cruised to a 3-0 win away to Gibraltar. Alexander Sorloth , Kristian Thorstvedt and Jonas Svensson got the goals. Only a brilliant performance from goalkeeper Dale Coleing prevented a bigger defeat for the hosts. Norway have won four of their last five World Cup preliminaries, all without conceding.

Latvia 1-2 Montenegro

A stunning opener for the hosts saw Janis Ikaunieks lash home a left-foot volley, but Stevan Jovetic poked Montenegro level seconds later. Jovetic then settled the outcome with a glorious second as the clock ticked down, dribbling across field before curling a 20-yard shot in off the underside of the crossbar.

Slovenia 1-0 Croatia

Sandi Lovric was the hosts' hero, scoring to secure Slovenia a shock victory against the 2018 World Cup finalists in Ljubljana.

Malta 1-3 Russia

The 2018 World Cup hosts got their 2022 qualifying campaign under way with goals from front man Artem Dzyuba and right-back Mario Fernandes . Dzyuba turned provider for the second, with each effort squeezing past Maltese goalkeeper Henry Bonello. Joseph Mbong got one back for the hosts, scoring his first international goal in some style by thundering a shot past Anton Shunin from an acute angle. But Alexander Sobolev sealed the victory for Stanislav Cherchesov's side just minutes after coming off the bench, with his shot proving too powerful for Bonello.

Cyprus 0-0 Slovakia

The night's only goalless game in Europe saw visitors Slovakia dominate possession but their Cypriot hosts carve out arguably the better of the chances. A point apiece was ultimately a fair outcome.

Concacaf results (All matches)

Guatemala 1-0 cuba.

A gritty victory for Guatemala over visiting Cuba thanks to Luiz Martinez’ s goal approaching the hour mark. The win gives the Guatemalans a strong opening platform ahead of the other Group C match tomorrow between Curacao and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Dominican Republic 1-0 Dominica

A lone strike just after half-time from Fran Nunez proved enough for Dominican Republic to edge victory over Caribbean neighbours Dominica and collect three important points. It is a first World Cup win for Los Quisqueyanos since their strong Brazil 2014 campaign.

St Kitts and Nevis 1-0 Puerto Rico

Vinceroy Nelson 's goal towards the end of the first half proved to be the difference in San Cristobal. They now have four wins in 11 World Cup qualifying matches, meaning they have only lost two of their last 11 since the start of the 2014 qualifying campaign. It is also St Kitts and Nevis' fourth clean sheet in their last five meetings with Puerto Rico in all competitions.

Antigua and Barbuda 2-2 Montserrat

Montserrat (183) grabbed a crucial point against Antigua and Barbuda (126), who are ranked 57 places above their opponents in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. Lyle Taylor was the hero of the day for Montserrat, bagging both goals in the first half, while Eugene Kirwan and D'Andre Bishop scored the goals for the hosts.

Suriname 3-0 Cayman Islands

Suriname proved to be too strong for Ben Pugh and his side in the end. Goals from Shaquille Pinas , Ryan Donk (penalty) and Gleofilo Vlijter saw Dean Gorre's charges put three points on the board as they opened proceedings in Group B with a victory in Paramaribo.

Qatar: UN Gaza Resolution Has No Immediate Impact on Doha Ceasefire Talks

DOHA (Reuters) -The United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has not had an immediate impact on ceasefire talks in Doha, mediator Qatar said on Tuesday.

The resolution demanded an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas, as well as the release of hostages. The United States abstained from the vote, angering ally Israel which had wanted Washington to veto it. The remaining 14 council members voted in favour.

War in Israel and Gaza

"We haven't seen any immediate effect on the talks, they are ongoing as they were before, as the (UN) decision was taking place," said Qatar foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari during a press conference in Doha on Tuesday.

A source briefed on the talks earlier told Reuters that a delegation from Israel's Mossad spy agency, which had arrived in Qatar more than a week ago, was still engaging in discussions. A small Mossad team was returning to Israel from Doha for consultations on developments, the source added.

For weeks the sides have been discussing a potential truce of around 42 days during which around 40 Israeli hostages would be released in return for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Israel says it is willing to consider only a temporary pause in fighting; Hamas wants any deal to lead to an end to the war.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said on Tuesday Hamas had made "delusional" demands, which it said showed the Palestinians were not interested in a deal. Hamas has accused Israel of stalling at the talks while it carries out its military offensive.

The discussions, mediated by Egypt and Qatar, are continuing as a humanitarian crisis devastates Palestinians in Gaza with severe shortages of food, medicine and hospital care. Concerns are growing that famine will take hold.

The war was triggered when Hamas burst into southern Israel from Gaza on Oct. 7, killed 1,200 people and took 253 hostages into the enclave, according to Israeli tallies. Israeli retaliated by pounding Gaza in a military offensive which has killed more than 32,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza Health authorities.

Formula 1 Racing Is One of the Most Exciting Sports to Travel for — Here's the 2024 Lineup

With three big races in the U.S. and many more abroad, this is the year to plan a trip around F1.

As the global phenomenon of “sports tourism” continues to surge, 2024 promises to be a year full of opportunities to create unforgettable travel memories, from the Olympic Games in Paris to the European Football Championships in Germany. There are plenty of reasons to plan a trip around a major sporting event and, for me, Formula One offers a special opportunity to explore a city at a time when you will find a truly unique atmosphere.

Unlike traveling for a one-off sports game, F1 is built around a weekend of action where you can truly feel the excitement and anticipation build as the weekend progresses from practice to qualifying, and then, of course, to race day itself. With 24 incredible race locations set in highly diverse cities, no two F1 races share the same backdrop — from deserts to lakes and from mountains to marinas, the F1 2024 calendar is packed with iconic race tracks.

For those looking for an excuse to finally book that overseas trip of a lifetime, F1 offers multiple race destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Asia. and South America; there really is something for everyone.

For those looking to stay closer to home, following the hugely successful 2023 Las Vegas Strip debut, the 2024 F1 calendar will once again showcase more races on U.S. soil than any other country. I attended last year's Vegas race weekend , and MGM Resorts International just announced my favorite place to watch is returning for year two: the Bellagio Fountain Club, offering unobstructed views of the Winner's Stage and the Strip, indoor and outdoor entertainment areas, open bars, and unlimited food by top chefs that will include Mario Carbone, David Chang, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and more in 2024. ( Tickets just went on sale .) Joining Sin City to complete the U.S. lineup this year are Miami and Austin.

When attending races within driving distance, I recommend taking it to the next level and supercharging your race weekend journey by renting a luxury sports car from your favorite F1 manufacturer. Why not arrive in style?

Below, find the F1 grand prix lineup for the rest of 2024, and start planning your trip.
