The first day of SUP 11-City Tour 2022 - 48.8 km (30 miles) from Leeuwarden to Sloten.

NETHERLANDS - In 2008, Anne-Marie Reichman founded SUP 11-City Tour, one of the world's toughest ultra-SUP races, which follows the route of the Elfstedentocht . Athletes choose to race the non-stop, 5-day, or a combination of both races for 220 kilometers or 130 miles. The Elfstedentocht's format is mirrored for SUP 11-City Tour athletes—they collect stamps at designated spots (replaced by ringing a bell due to wet conditions), klun or run with their SUP from lock to lock, and receive the esteemed Elfstedenkruisje (Eleven Cities Cross).

Like Elfstedentocht, SUP 11-City Tour embodies Frisian heritage and pride for the community, athletes, and volunteers who return every year.

Tanja Ecker interview

Tanja Ecker competed in the European SUP Championships in Denmark and the International Canoe Federation SUP World Championships in Poland two weeks before traveling to Friesland. This year was the first time a German athlete won SUP 11-City Tour after placing fifth in 2018 and second in 2020 and 2021.

Ecker's win came after a full year of racing and training hard on the road while conducting clinics throughout Europe.

"The SUP 11-City Tour means so much to me. It’s like an addiction, once you do it, you want to come back every year and be part of it. Also, I’m involved with the whole event as part of the media crew working for the event all year round with an amazing team. This is what also connects me as an athlete, because I just like to paddle in the stunning Frisian landscape, out in the elements, and go beyond my limits. The SUP 11-City Tour is really one of the toughest races out there, so that makes me even more stoked to win. After being there five years and finally winning makes it so special. This year seems to be destiny: 5 years, sharing a boat with Anne-Marie again, my start number was my birth year, and the finish was a week before my 30th birthday."

Tanja turned 30 years old on Sunday, September 25 and her bib number was 92.

Everybody In The Same Battle

It is no surprise that SUP 11-City Tour attracts phenomenal athletes who return to defend their titles: 5x champion Bruno Hasulyo, 5x Dutch champion Petronella van Malsen, 8x finisher and this year's Grand Diva champion Tineke Merkus.

But in every corner are stories of unbreakable courage.

Ghislaine Cordier de Croust, a certified SUP and yoga instructor, felt good during the first three days of her 5-day race before fatigue, brutal winds, constant rain, and paddling an average of six hours each day took a toll. Cordier de Croust mustered what she had left in the tank on the final day with no sleep, one banana, and two painkillers. She fought hard for the 27 kilometer, or 16.7 mile, time trial in a paddling train powered by two competitors in the women’s open division, Froukje Wichgers-Marien who placed sixth and Julia Georgi who placed eighth.

SUP 11-City Tour 2022

When asked about her experience, Cordier de Croust who placed seventh said, “You truly get to know what you're capable of - you, your board, and your paddle. Everyone is in the same battle." After completing her first tour in 2021, her husband secretly signed her up for this year’s race which he presented as a surprise birthday gift last November.

Old Friends & Soon-To-Be New Friends

For 2022, SUP 11-City Tour boasted 250 athletes and over 100 volunteers who work tirelessly from 5:30am to past midnight.

The media team rushed around, edited on the fly, updated social media, produced film, wrote daily reports, and poured through 1000's of footage. From athlete hospitality, catering, race timing, logistics, medical, and safety to certifications, finance, communications, and PR, volunteers are the backbone for the roving crew that seamlessly appeared and disappeared at 11 Frisian cities and its endless waterways.

SUP 11-City Tour is a year-round production that restarts as soon as the race ends. Seasoned volunteers like Mayola Dijksman is one of the foundational photographers who has been coming back every year to produce stunning race footage.

SUP 11-City Tour

"Once a year I have the great privilege to tour through our beautiful Friesland and immerse myself in awesome vibes and positive energy with a group of beautiful people. Old friends and soon to be new friends - paddlers who sign up for a one-of-a-kind race challenging themselves to next levels every day again or for the first time, and volunteers who work hard challenging themselves to do even better each day and are always there to support anyone in need. We all ‘go deep’ together but never stop having fun too. I feel that creates a bond beyond anything."

In 2012, founder Anne-Marie Reichman asked Dijksman to join the crew to become an official photographer for the race.

History of Elfstedentocht and Elfstedenkruisje

In 1890, Elfstedentocht, or Eleven Cities Tour, the biggest ice skating event in the world was conceived by Willem 'Pim' Mulier. The first official race was organized by De Friesche IJsbond in 1909. The tour takes place annually and only when the ice is at least 15 centimeters or 6 inches thick. Athletes have to be at-the-ready within 48 hours of the announcement to race.

In the past 50 years, the Elfstedentocht has taken place only three times and is in danger of becoming extinct due to climate change.

Marije Elgersma, via Yahnny Adolfo San Luis

SUP 11-City Tour gives homage by maintaining elements of the Elfstedentocht such as collecting stamps at required check points (ringing the bell has replaced the stamps). On the fourth day, athletes must take their SUPs out of the water and klun from lock to lock. In West Frisian, klúnje means “to run on skates over a carpet,” which is necessary where skaters have to run to the next stretch of ice. Athletes are awarded the Elfstedenkruisje, or Eleven Cities Cross, after completing the non-stop or 5-day race. It is similar to the cross that was awarded to 86,000 Elfstedentocht finishers up to the last one that was held in 1997.

Volunteer and official photographer, Edwin Westra, who remembers the last Elfstedentocht as support crew member for his friend Erik Bruining in SUP 11-City Tour 2013.

Media crew, via Yahnny Adolfo San Luis

"Erik could no longer stand on one leg at the famous tile bridge. Immediately a plan was forged, we had to splint his leg. I had gaffer tape in my car and someone else had an umbrella. Together with his fellow non-stopper Jeroen Labots, he crossed the finish line with the umbrella stuck to his leg and everyone was in a jubilant mood. I didn't do the race myself but I felt like I was part of the athlete's journey. Although it is important for many to win, participating in the SUP 11-City Tour is something you have to experience. Every year athletes from far and wide come for the first time, but often for a second or even more times to experience the feeling, and every time is unique. If it's not the weather, it's the people. I love it and I have already put it in my agenda for next year that I have to keep it free. See you next year."

Heroic stories like this keep the spirit of the Elfstedentocht alive.

What to expect for the 15th edition

2022 saw the biggest registration numbers in its history due to the growing popularity of SUP and the demand for endurance events.

Like running, cycling, and triathlon, the natural trajectory for any growing sport is to offer options for athletes who prefer endurance and ultra distances such as Yukon River Quest, MR340, and Great Alabama 650.

Athletes as young as 13-year-old Maximus Sijrier who competed in SUP 11-City Tour for the first time won the solo tour men’s division. He is part of the next generation of paddlers influencing the endurance paddling scene. Rembrandt Joosten who paddled on one side with a modified paddle, one lung, artificial hip and knee proved that "can't" is not part of an endurance athlete's vocabulary.

Maximus Sijrier, via Yahnny Adolfo San Luis

Göran Gustavsson participated for the first time in 2017 and realized that this was more than a race. "I wanted to come back in 2018. In 2019, I wanted to race both the non-stop and 5-day for the challenge but also the experience of friends old and new." In 2021, Gustavsson participated in both the non-stop and 5-day, accomplishing back-to-back races for the same reason. "It’s more than a competition. In 2022, it was only the non-stop due to time. But I will continue to come back as a competitor or volunteer. SUP 11-City Tour is more than a competition."

The SUP 11-City Tour  covers a grueling 136 miles, making it by far the longest stand-up paddleboard race in the world. Divided into five daylong stages, it’s the Tour de France of paddling, taking competitors through some of Holland’s most scenic terrain.

Native Dutchwoman Anne-Marie Reichman, a professional windsurfer, followed the five-day route as a personal challenge in 2008, then took it to the masses in the first open event in 2010. The race route stems from a historical ice-skating path that farmers once took to create a round through Friesland, a province in northwestern part of the Netherlands.

It follows narrow canals—of mostly flat water—through “the pearls of Friesland,” historical cities built from the 1700s. The loop begins and ends in Leeuwarden, traveling through Sloten, Workum, Franeker, Dokkum, and several smaller towns between. When you aren’t ducking your head to pass beneath bridges, you can take in countryside views of windmills, open pastureland with sheep, cows, and horses, and forests.

Some 200 paddlers participated in the various stages of the 2013 race. Even more are expected for the 2014 event, which will take place September 3–7, particularly since organizers plan to vie for the Dutch record for the most stand-up paddleboarders on the water at a time.

“Elite participants need to be able to paddle hard five days in a row…This is demanding,” says Reichman. “Athletes get meals and massages offered every day. However, a distance of 44 kilometers is tough, and then there are four more stages.” For those in the elite category, the payoff is a solid test of performance and recovery, and preparation for the rest of the season.

Even if you’re not an elite athlete, you can still enjoy this challenge by participating in the amateur category (which doesn’t give out rankings). Form a two- to five-person team to take on different stages, or try out the weekend-only portions of the tour.

Along the route, you can lodge for the evening on an authentic Frysian sailing ship. You’ll be bunking with up to 26 other participants, but as Reichman observes, “This is an experience in itself and participants bond throughout the entire event becoming family.” Maybe a pep talk from a newfound family member will be just the thing to help you complete this epic challenge.

Hello Max, can you tell something about yourself?

Hello, I am Maximus and I live in the Netherlands, all the way up in the North in the city Workum. Supping is my favourite sport since I was 9 years old and I just turned 14. The last few years I have competed in several national and international races. This year I got first place in the ICE Race Thun in long distance and technical U15, the Dutch youth championship in all disciplines and the Belgian youth championship long distance. It was an honor to be asked to represent The Netherlands at the European championships (u18) in Denmark. The club where I sup is SUPkids Makkum and I still train there once or twice a week. Since January I have been training with SEPA to prepare myself for the Sup 11 city. In the end, I was training 6 times a week together with my father.

Congratulations on your sup11citytour. You’re now officially the youngest to ever complete it. How do you feel?

I feel great! Before I started I was a little bit nervous. Although I was determined to finish the whole tour I was anxious to see if I could finish all 5 days. As I started the tour, I became confident that I could do it. There were no big setbacks for me and I got through the days allright. At the end it took me 24:57,27 to finish the whole 11-city tour and was the fastest in the tour division.

11 city tour sup

Why did you make such a record attempt?

In earlier editions of the sup 11 city tour, I had already done the last day stage a couple of times and last year I did the weekend. Soon after I had finished the weekend stage last year I started thinking about when I could do the whole tour. At a certain point, I decided that I wanted to do it this year and become the youngest to do the entire sup 11 city tour. I love long distances and this is a real long distance race and an extra special one because this is so close to home. The second day even finishes in my hometown and the third day starts here.

11 city tour sup

What do you know about the previous youngsters who did the SUP 11 City Tour and how do you compare?

I met James Van Drunen a few times here in Holland, he is a really cool guy unfortunately I haven’t seen him in a long time. Connor Baxter the sprint legend who does not know him!! I had some contact with him about the 11 city and he was sure I would make it, since all the training he did as preparation was doing downwinders. Casper Steinfath is a true legend as well, all the crazy stuff he does in and around the water is really cool!!

11 city tour sup

Tell us about the toughest memories/moments from your race?

The toughest day was the third day, my shoulders were hurting pretty bad that day from the beginning. All days, except the first, there was a lot of wind. My shoulders got sore and all I could do was keep paddling after an hour the pain started getting less or I got used to it. The weather was hard and the last two days I was getting fed up with the strong wind.

11 city tour sup

What are the the happiest moments?

The parts of the tour where I could do a downwinder were good parts. I was happy with my finish on the first day and still felt strong after the firts 48 km. Obviously the last finish was my happiest moment, I could finaly stop paddling and celebrate my accomplishment and birthday. Lots of family was waiting for me at the finish and they were really proud of me. Ooh, and the massages were also pretty good and something to look forward to!

11 city tour sup

What are your next challenges?

I look forward to keep improving myself in the sport. For next year, I hope to do more international races and my main goal is the European championship again in two years, where I hope to show that I have been training really hard in all water conditions. Last words, I would like to thank Mom and Dad and my little sister for helping me with my crazy training schedules, Supkids Makkum for supporting me from the beginning and Bruno Hasulyo and SEPA for helping me with my training plans and equipment.

SUP 11-CITY TOUR

Held in Friesland in the north of the Netherlands, the SUP 11-cities, is a unique race held over five days which covers over 220km! We caught up with event founder Anne Marie Reichman Totah and head of Social Media, Marije Elgersma to find out how the tour got started and what to expect if you plan to experience this legendary race.

Words: Anne Marie Reichman Totah and Marije Elgersma. // Photos: Mayola Dijksman, Yahnny San Luis and Nynke Bakker.

Anne Marie Reichman Totah

“I stopped competing on the PWA windsurfing tour by the end of 2007 and I was at a bit loss of what to do next. In February 2008 I first discovered SUP, firstly in the waves and then I jumped into the downwind season in Maui. Loving the endurance side of the sport, it brought me a lot of excitement doing the crossings between the islands. I decided I wanted to take this accessible sport to the Netherlands and after much brainstorming, I decided to SUP the same route as the legendary Dutch ice-skating race and Windsurf 11 city tour!

Anne Marie Reichman Totah

I had a vision that people from all around the world would paddle the Frisian waters, experiencing the endurance of the tough flat Frisian lands, where reeds protect you from the wind and where cows, sheep and windmills look at you for hours before you paddle into the next city.

I loved being part of events over the years and now I wanted to host an event myself and give something back, as well as share our culture and this unique experience as well. As the idea for the event became stronger and I decided to form a non-profit organisation to support me in my mission and vision. I first paddled the route on my own in 2008, and my personal achievement over the five days would be a good test run, as well as helping to gain some of my own answers on how I should set up the event.

Then, the game of creating an event started up. Being a pro athlete, I had plenty of media contacts, so for 2009 I went to work to spread the word internationally! I scored some decent media attention on my personal paddle of the 11 cities and had a great foundation to build upon.

SUP action on the 11-City tour

Luckily, I had a lot of friends in the professional SUP athlete world, so I started contacting them to come experience and compete. I needed to spread the word. The rest of the puzzle was fun but also a hardworking challenge. From my experience of the windsurfing 11 city tour I saw and learned how the crew worked. The athletes received a massage every day and there was a 15-minute rest break during a full day of sailing. I picked out my favourite elements of the event that I had enjoyed.

In the meantime, I needed to promote SUP! I held clinics throughout Holland to promote the event through media outlets and social media to find funding and sponsors, which resulted in an endless search, lots of meetings and hundreds of hours on the computer researching and answering emails. I had my think tank group, being the non-profit members to help. I also had some solid older crew, mainly family and friends, who had enough experiences in fields to back me up and make sure the event had a solid safe foundation.

At the time, I was living in Hawaii, doing all my work on Maui in between my three visits a year to the Netherlands. Back at home, I would run around like a crazy woman attending meetings and making sure I would speak to people in person! I remember receiving the funding from the local government in August 2009 with the event starting a mere three weeks later with the first invitational.

Typical Dutch scenery

To maintain an event of this magnitude it is a massive amount of work – more than I could ever imagined. Throughout the entire year there are tasks to be done; from finding new sponsors to maintaining the funding and income from partners already tied to the event. There are permissions and permits to organise. As we roam through the north of the Netherlands during the five days, we stop over in different areas with our crew of 250 to 300 people – including volunteers. Logistics, communications with crew, athletes, media, having your good and bad weather plans which all have to be organised. During each year we are also looking into the organisation of the following years event! It is a perpetual process. To maintain an event like this, you have to work really hard, but you also need to grow and improve in certain areas, which is always the ambition, but it takes even more effort.

Memorable moments

WHAT TO EXPECT

At the beginning we welcome all the athletes! If you are a first timer, you will see that everyone seems to know each other and gets along like a house on fire, and you may feel a little left out! Don’t worry, that only lasts a day. When you start your journey on the water it soon becomes a bonding experience. You will most likely find people who paddle at the same speed as you! You will complain together, how long it takes to reach the finish, but you will also enjoy every moment as the experience is so unique! You will experience being tired, then getting over it, pushing through it and then you may feel some superhero sensations as you reach that finish you thought was unobtainable.

At the finish you can receive a massage, you eat Frisian dried sausage (a real cultural treat) and then the banter starts as you talk hero and battlefield stories with each other! There are also food trucks that roam with the event, which also offer great coffee and snacks.

Days two, three and four will be different, but there is one thing in common… at the starting line of each day, you feel your body aching and you feel your sore hands! Within 30 minutes you forget those aches and pains as you continue on a new adventure in beautiful Friesland, where the special water culture greets you. There are stops along the way that provide you with food, water, music and happy volunteers! The weather can be anything, which most people in the UK are used to, that is all part of the challenge.

Ring that bell!

TYPICAL DAYS

If you enter the event, you will paddle 48km, 44km, 41km, 42km and finally 27km on the last day!

Or if you sign up for the nonstop version, you can paddle for an exhausting 36 hours through the day, night and the next day, if that’s your cup of tea! When you finish your paddle, you will eat and sleep on authentic Frisian sailing boats, which are rented by the organisation. These are your moving 3-star hotel There are showers, toilets, kitchen and beds on board. Some boats offer more luxury than others. The boats work really well because your belongings are waiting for you on board. You can cook your own food, if and when you prefer not to eat the food provided by the organisation. Breakfast is on the boats, in the morning, so it really is your home! Although you are sharing with around 18 other people, who rent the same boat. Again, this is a great bonding experience!

SUP action from above

LEVEL REQUIRED

These are longer distances than normal for the average paddler. Most long distant races are 10km . So, most days we are paddling four times more! You need to be able to push yourself much further than you are used to, but everyone is in the same boat. When you start each day, you will race towards the halfway resting station (where you get 15 minutes rest, and you have time to quickly eat and refill your supplies) and then you are into the 2nd half of the day stage! It can be a mental game! You need to be able to break it up in your mind to keep your overall mental game strong. As a first-time experience it can be overwhelming, but it is also the best one, as you never get a second chance for that first impression of the whole tour. My motto is ‘When you can paddle half, then you can paddle it all!’. Let us say the longest stage is 48km, then you should at least have done a 24km paddle a few times. But, also, if possible, throw in a day of training in there that is 6 to 8 hours paddling around a month out from the event! It is a good idea to test your body, your hands, your hunger and your desire and see how you recover.

COMPETITIVE ELEMENT

I used the ice-skating model where the elite are in it to win it, while there are also categories for all levels of participation. We have quite a few different competition categories. You can enter with the elite women or men, which are the only categories with prize money. There are 40-year-old plus and 50-year-old plus categories for the older or more mature paddlers. There is also the tour division where you can paddle at your own pace without competing, which is a lot of fun as well! The tour division has their own stations to rest so they don’t interfere with the competition. It is something we had to include since the resting stations became too busy and hard to handle.

11-City tour

I would say a 14-foot hardboard is my recommendation for the 11-city tour. Most riders use a 14-foot board. Competing the entire event, it gets frustrating when you are on a 12’6″ doing the hard work and the 14-foot boards pass you all the time. I had a 23-inch-wide board this year – from what I thought was pretty ok, but then the 20.5-inch boards go a tad faster if you are happy to balance on a narrower board. The first few days can be choppy with lakes to pass and rougher water, so it is down to your skill level. Day’s three, four and five are less hectic in general where narrower boards are becoming more favourable.

PERSONAL HIGHLIGHTS

My solo accomplishment in 2008 stays extremely special to me. With my mum helping me out, my windsurfing friends coming to visit me along the route, eating homemade pancakes and looking at the map on some not too familiar tracks where to go. The first adventure was special.

2009 was special as everyone from different parts of the world wanted to come and be part of it! It was the year of invitationals. To see how everyone experienced it and bonded with each other for life was amazing and that has been a theme of the SUP 11-City tour.

2010 was the real first year where we had an exponential growth and more international top paddlers. We had great sponsors, a VIP launch, awesome weather and the Red Bull music Hummer; it was the real deal.

2011 was awesome because I felt I raced the hardest I ever had, almost at the point of throwing up and became first woman.

After becoming a mum, 2018 was the first year I completed the entire 11 cities again after a break.

That was a special one where Janneke Smits, Joanne Hammilton Vale and myself picked up trash the entire route. The event became more for the planet and others than just for myself, which I feel goes hand-in-hand with motherhood.

2019 was also very memorable because I entered the non-stop edition. That was an amazing experience for me. I loved paddling through the night, again there was adventure of something new to experience! I almost didn’t make it, but then I flew over the finish after gaining new energy for that last 18 km.

2022 was also a very fun edition for me as I had previously decided not to be there, but I decided at the last minute to attend anyways. Then everything was a bonus, and the energy was awesome.

Base camp

I expect this year to be busy on the water again like 2022. I also hope that by the time comes around that all the countries will be free to travel again. I think the local riders will hit it hard as this is their home event. There is a real exciting drive for everyone to come show and do their best at the end of the season at the 11-city tour.

I am a dreamer when it comes to event co-ordination, and I always love to add an extra energy to the tour where I can. Musicians are welcome again in 2023. SUP clinics which would be organised to give back to the community are also on my to do list. Also, I’m open to anything cultural or traditional which adds to what is an already awesome event – that would be awesome too!

One thing to look out for it is the crew of volunteers! They work hard, they play hard, they are good at what they are doing; they do it with a smile and everyone is family!

See you there!

MARIJE ELGERSMA

GETTING INVOLVED

“I was persuaded in 2013 to sign up for the SUP 11-City Tour. I trained a lot, didn’t know what to expect, but I loved it. I learned a lot about endurance sport, and I had never done something like that before.

After that edition Anne-Marie Reichman Totah called me and asked me to join the board. I became the contact for all the athletes and that led to also running the social media. So, from then on, I created with the photographers and videographer the content for the tour. The team has been growing from just three during the first years. We are now a team of eight, plus students from the university in Leeuwarden. From our first live show in 2018 until hopefully a ‘Tour de France’ show in 2023. Christopher Parker has been dreaming of doing this for years and I think 2023 will be the year. The 15th anniversary is coming up!

MARIJE ELGERSMA at work

TYPICAL DAY

I normally wake up around 6:30am. First thing is going upstairs on our ‘mother ship’ for a coffee, yes you need that on those days! Most of the time there are already some volunteers awake as well. Starting up by ’scrolling’ through our content, checking in with the media crew and talking through again the plan for the upcoming day.

Because I’m a board member, I usually check in with Kiki and Ritske, the other two board members, that everything is set for the day. Prior the skippers meeting I do the podium moment for the fastest paddlers in their category of the previous day. If I know some background stories, I’ll try to mention it, so it’s a bit more than calling out the times.

Action from above

After all the starts, I start moving in the car with my colleagues from the media, so we can create stories on our social media channels and for the overall day video. I’m always on standby in case there is something happening along the route. This is the case for the whole board.

With the Soundbox speaker we try to cheer up all the athletes on the water, after paddling those km’s you know music can help you to paddle to the finish. We do try to be at ‘secret’ bridges, to be a surprise and create those smiles on the faces. When the first athletes are finishing, I make sure there is a least one photographer and videographer ready to capture the moment.

The food trucks in the SUP Village provide everyone with food and that finishes around 7:00pm, but then it’s not over yet. The media team is in full force to edit all the footage and to get it out there, so everyone around the world can see what happened that day and the athletes will be able to share their moments.

Action on the SUP 11-City tour

THE EXPERIENCE

Because the weather in SUPtember in The Netherlands can vary anything from scoring, sunny and hot to rainy and cold days. We seriously had (2021) the first two days 30 degrees and ended up around 17-20 degrees for the last three days. It can be windy, rainy or no wind it all. So, it’s really good if you have the opportunity to train in all those conditions. Bring clothing that covers the above weather circumstances. Layers are the key!

Since the beginning of the event in 2009 the athletes that stay with us are sleeping on old sailing boats. Cosy rooms, where you share the room with fellow athletes in bunkbeds. This is where you can share stories around the big dining table and can have breakfast with the sun coming up on the deck! New since 2022 is that we also have the option to stay in holiday houses, with more space, but still with fellow athletes! Staying with us, makes it easier to connect with all the people from around the world. We know that long time friendships have been created on the water during paddling.

Made it!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

In general, I just love the Non-Stop version of the SUP 11-City Tour, especially the night, where I usually see the athletes around the time where it starts to get dark. The next time I see them is then in the middle of the night and the ones that paddle slower are not seen until towards sunrise. Those moments are magical, to get them through the night together with their support team is something you would need to experience.

The non stop version!

PREPARATION

The entries are open until a week before the event starts and you can register through the website: www.sup11citytour.com Once you have entered, you will need to train. You can train on distance, but also finding what you like to eat during the day is important. Also, which board suits you and check the length of the paddle. Connecting with your local SUP School can also help, they will assist you out with the training for the endurance races and can help make a program for you. If you don’t have one in your area, you can always contact us, and we’ll arrange something!”

BREAKING NEWS

No injuries reported after woman crashes vehicle into Waffle House in Wytheville

The city of roanoke wants to hire you wednesday night, the job fair starts at 4 p.m. at the berglund center.

Keshia Lynn , Multimedia Journalist

ROANOKE, Va. – The City of Roanoke is eager to hire at Wednesday’s job fair at the Berglund Center.

It starts at 4 p.m., and you don’t need to register in advance. You’ll just need to have your resume and driver’s license with you.

Have breaking news stories delivered right to your inbox

City leaders say about 30 departments with the City of Roanoke will be at tonight’s job fair, including the Sheriff’s Office, Fire and EMS and Parks and Recreation.

They are also planning on hiring on the spot, there will be drug screenings and it’s even prepared to help you get your CDL for certain positions.

This is the seventh year the city has hosted the event, and about 800 people are expected to attend.

“It will be a rapid hiring process. We want people to come in and be able to work the next day. So, we are bypassing what would normally take a little bit of a longer time to get people onboarding and go through interview processing,” said Interim Director of Human Resources Christopher Parker with the City of Roanoke.

The Department of Transportation will also be at Wednesday night’s job fair. There are about 14 positions open right now. City leaders said last year they hired five people on the spot.

“Usually within the city, it can take up to a month to get someone hired in, and on these specific nights, they give us the opportunity to get everything done in-house in one night. So, this year, we are also gonna be offering an acceptance letter that night,” said Kristin Hall with the City of Roanoke’s Department of Transportation.

Meanwhile, if you’re in high school finding a job can be hard, but Roanoke City Public Schools wants to help you with its job fair next Thursday starting at 3 p.m. at the Berglund Center.

This job fair is for students in 9th through 12th grade. However, parents are also encouraged to attend. 10 News is told some employers might be interested in hiring them. There will also be resources for students with disabilities.

The Roanoke City Public Schools job fair was created in 2022, and it’s been held ever since in the spring of each year.

“For our seniors, it’s a great way to start a career, find a career and get started in it. For our other students, they can be engaged in a summer job or get started in a work-based learning experience, such as an internship or apprenticeship, or those types of things that we offer our students,” said Work-Based Coordinator Jess Truax with Roanoke City Public Schools.

Summer camp resources will also be provided for students, from AI to culinary.

Buses will pick students up from school and take them to the Berglund Center for the event. Dinner will be provided for students too.

Charli XCX Plots 2024 International ‘BRAT' Tour Dates

Charli XCX announced the international dates for her 2024 Brat tour on Monday (March 25), which will be a mix of live concerts and what she's dubbed "partygirl" events. The run will kick off with a set at Primavera Sound Barcelona on June 1, followed by shows in London, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Mexico City before winding down on June 22 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Just hours after announcing the dates, the singer noted on Instagram that all the shows were already sold out .

At press time Charli had not yet announced the release date for BRAT , her sixth full-length album, though she did recently reveal that it is out this summer, contains 15 songs and is 41:23 long. The follow-up to her 2022 album Crash has been advanced by the uptempo first single, "Von Dutch."

Speaking to Billboard at this year's 2024 Women in Music event, Charli said that BRAT is a club record meant to evoke the illegal London rave scene of the early 2000s where she started performing as a 14 and 15-year-old, produced from a tight collection of sounds to create "this unique minimalism that is very loud and bold."

She also said that the album is "very direct" eschewing "metaphor and flowery lyricism" for language that is closer to the way she talks to her friends in text messages. "This record is all the things I would talk about with my friends, said exactly how I would say them. It's in ways very aggressive and confrontational, but also very conversational and personal," she said. "And not in that boring way where artists are like, ‘This is my most personal record.' To me, it feels like listening to a conversation with a friend.

See the Brat tour announcement and dates below.

June 1 - Barcelona, Spain @ Primavera Sound Barcelona

June 7 - London, England @ Here at Outernet
