Could not recommend BN Adventure highly enough! Me and my partner completed the 10 day hiking tour through the peaks of the Balkans and it exceeded our expectations. With guides Gezim and Artan we were well looked after, with them going above and beyond to cater to the group. The hikes were challenging yet extremely beautiful, with amazing scenery surrounding you on every walk. Highly recommend if you are interested in hiking, getting to know good people and challenging yourself! LINK

My son and I just completed the “10 Days self-guided Peaks of the Balkans tour” (which includes 9 days walking) from Balkan Natural Adventure (BNA). Some of the walks were on the “official” Peaks of the Balkans Trail, some were not, and all were excellent. Our two favourites were climbing Gjeravica, the highest Peak in Kosovo, from Doberdol and the walk to Taljanka from Grbaja Valley (neither of which are “official”).

The GPX tracks BNA provided for our self-guiding were good. BNA were a delight to deal with throughout; always responsive, friendly and helpful. I would be very pleased to visit the Balkans with BNA again and am happy to recommend them. LINK

We went on a full 14 days tour of the POB. A group of 5 friends with our fabulous leader Alb. The tour was amazing and sights, sceneries, mountains, lakes, rocks were astonishing and stunning. Despite the tough climbing and knees breaking descending paths it was awesome. BNA took care of everything we needed and solved any problems or difficulties rising up through the trek. We could focus on the trip and have great fun due to excellent logistical care. Virtyt ,Anila and all stuff were extraordinary helpful and kind. We highly recommend planning your trip with BNA.

I cannot express how excellent and professional this company is; they really care about their customers’ experience, they listen, and adapt to the customer’s needs immediately.

They responded to all my questions across 50 + emails and they were happy to address all my concerns.

They supplied me with an impressive amount of information on the region and hike which was extremely useful.

This claim was tested during my hike with my son, I wanted to make a special bonding experience and go on an adventure as a team of father and son. It is my son’s first long hike. They arranged for everything, and everything was perfect.

They even responded to my wife’s calls when she got a bit worried since she didn’t know that we didn’t have cell coverage during the hike!

I needed to change my itinerary between the hiking days, and they responded beautifully.

This is the reason why I am considering returning to the region and exploring it further as I know I can rely on Balkan Natural Adventure. Go ahead and book them, you will not regret it.

LINK

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

  • Royal Rajasthan and Villages of India
  • Small ship cruises

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

  • Our African safaris
  • Costa Rica Wildlife

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

  • Tuscany & the Cinque Terre
  • Argentina: Hikes and Estancias of Patagonia
  • Palau Snorkeling & Sea Kayaking
  • Some trips with minimal hiking but rugged travel conditions or long drives, such as  Tribal Ghana, Togo & Benin,  are Trip Level 3.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

  • Ultimate Patagonia
  • Hiking the Spanish Pyrenees

Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

PEAKS OF THE BALKANS SELF GUIDED TOUR

Experience the best of Kosovo, Montenegro & Albania with the Peaks of the Balkans self guided tour. This 192-km trail explores remote, wild mountainous regions, reaching up to 2300 m. Despite historical barriers, the trek is now popular worldwide, offering a must-do adventure for hikers.

Peaks of the Balkans trail is a 192-km cross-border trekking trail through the Accursed Mountains of Albania , Kosovo, and Montenegro. Considering the region’s turbulent history and once tightly controlled borders, especially during the communist period, it was impossible to move across these places. No longer. Nowadays, the trek has become very popular and people around the world are coming to visit this very remote area.

Considered a must-do for any avid hiker, the trail’s difficulty levels range from easy to moderate+, demanding a good level of physical fitness and the appropriate mountain equipment.

Bori ridge in Peaks of the Balkans Trail, from Plav to Vusanje

The Peaks of the Balkans self guided tour is a trekking route spanning Kosovo, Montenegro, and Albania, covering around 200 km. The itinerary begins in Albania, but you have the flexibility to choose your starting and ending points when booking.

PEAKS OF THE BALKANS SELF GUIDED TRAIL

DAY 1 Meet your fellow travelers in Shkoder and drive to Thethi National Park.

Meet and greet with the driver in Shkoder, followed by a scenic drive towards Theth, passing through the beautiful Valley of Boga, the gate to the Albanian Alps.

Enjoy a free afternoon to explore Thethi National Park, and note that your Peaks of the Balkans self guided trail both starts and ends in Theth. Dinner is included.

Accommodation: Guesthouse Meals : Lunch, Dinner Drive: 2hrs 10min.

DAY 2 Hike from Theth to Valbona via Spectacular Valbona Pass

Today our trail heads towards spectacular Valbona Pass. It's not a particularly hard walk and is one that is attempted by many first-time mountain walkers. For the next couple of hours, the trail climbs slightly more steeply towards higher ground and we walk over a pass known as Valbona Pass. After several hours hiking uphill, you can stop at the Zefi’s housing for a hot mountain tea.

Resuming our hike for another 45-min, we continue ascending to the Valbona col (1792m) where we have outstanding views of the Albanian Alps and the Valley of Valbona.

After lunch, you make you way down to the valley. Of course, you can choose whether to independently continue our walking down on the main wide dried up riverbed road or take a bus to avoid it. All meals included.

Trek : 16.3Km; Uphill: 1040m, Downhill: 945m; Maximum altitude: 1759m; Time: 6-7hrs Difficulty: Moderate/Challenging Accommodation: Guesthouse Meals : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Having several hours of hiking, you'll reach the highest point of your today’s trek (2000m) as you hike a series of switchbacks over a pass that offers outstanding views of the snowcapped peaks of the Alps Range in every direction.

After crossing the border and thrusting into Montenegro, we will stop for lunch at Bori Pass, a flat spot with grass, a meadow for many shepherds from Cerem and Vuthaj.

Note: On this trail, optional is climbing Zla Kolata (2534m) peak; the highest peak in Montenegro.

Trek : 13.5Km; Uphill: 1150m, Downhill: 870m; Maximum altitude: 2150m; Time: 7-8hr Difficulty: Moderate/Challenging Accommodation: Guesthouse Meals : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This day involves a transfer hike from Çerem to Doberdol, a remote shepherd’s village accessible only by mule tracks and populated only during the summer time by shepherds. From Çerem, the hike climbs up to the Montenegrin border, passes the beautiful summer shepherd’s village of Balqin, and continues through the Gashi valley (protected area) to the shepherd’s village of Dobërdol.

After an early breakfast, today's hike begins through bilberry covered meadows of Dobërdol in the direction of the mountain ridge, which forms the border between the three countries. The highlight of this trail is the magical Triple peak 2266m, with a view of the Albanian Alps behind where we walked days before. It then continues with a steep descent to Rugova Camp/Restorant Gryka Hotel before continuing up along gravel roads to Reka e Allagёs.

At the Camp, there is a good restaurant, Restorant Gryka, – very good local fish – you can relax before a short transfer to Reka Allages.

From here, we have great views of the mountains, as well as the top of Guri Kuq which marks the highest peak in the Rugova mountains.

After about three hours of gradual ascent, we reach Era's hut where we have a break before reaching the top. Well rested, we begin a challenging but relatively short hike to the summit 2403m. On reaching the top of the Hajla 2403m, we stay high and contour around to the other side, enjoying spectacular views as we go.

After relaxing on the top, we enjoy a good descent to the beautiful village of Drelaj.

Peaks of the Balkans

More and more hiking is becoming my favourite activity to do when I travel. That change is thanks to experiences like the one I had when hiking the Peaks of the Balkans in Kosovo . Not only is hiking a great opportunity for some much needed exercise, it has a way of showing off places I simply wouldn’t get to see otherwise. And hiking in the Balkans in destinations like Kosovo has the added benefit of taking you places that relatively few other travellers get to see.

Now, while this hiking trip didn’t take me right around the entire Peaks of the Balkans route, it did at least show me why it’s so special. If you enjoy wonderful mountain scenery, rustic countryside and serene quiet, then this is a hike for you. What’s cool is that you can tailor this multi-day hike to your travel plans like we did and still get loads out of the experience. Here’s what it’s like hiking the Kosovo parts of the Peaks of the Balkans trail.

Table of Contents

The Peaks of the Balkans Trail

Trail Rugova Mountains

Because it’s not one of Europe’s better-known hiking routes, it’d probably help if I first introduce you to the Peaks of the Balkans hiking trail. This underrated route takes hikers through the Dinaric Alps of the Balkans in a circuit through Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro. A full loop of the trail covers 192km and is typically traversed in 10 to 12 days. That means that if you want to include the full hike in your travel plans, you really need to set aside the time.

Trails of the Peaks of the Balkans often run through remote and even uninhabited regions among the ominously-named Accursed Mountains. Modest villages, mountain huts and lodges are often the only signs of civilization you’ll come across some days.

As such, this is definitely not an overland hike to undertake lightly and you’ll definitely want to come prepared or do a Peak of the Balkans tour . But even if you only do a small section of the full route like we did, you’re sure to find it incredibly rewarding and memorable.

The Trails in Kosovo

Hiking in the Balkans

Across the different sections of the Peaks of the Balkans route, there are four that run at least partially through western Kosovo, two of which that don’t cross any borders. The four stages are:

  • Doberdol (Albania) – Milishevc
  • Milishevc – Reka E Allagёs
  • Reka E Allagёs –Drelaj – Kucishtё
  • Kucishtё – Babino Polje (Montenegro)

Traditionally, when hikers do the full route they have their paperwork ready to cross the unmanned international borders. By doing that in advance, they’re able to complete a full loop without having any passport problems. But you also don’t have to worry about international borders and passport checks if you don’t leave Kosovo which is what we did. With only a few spare days in our itinerary, we decided to just stick to the trails within Kosovo.

Accursed Mountains in Kosovo

Of course, to avoid any international crossings we had to get creative with our itinerary. Before we set out from Peja, the nearest city to the trails, we paid a visit to the Rugova Valley Tourist Information Centre. A helpful staff member provided us with suggestions on how we could make the most of our time in the region without leaving Kosovo. Essentially, we would cover as much of the interesting Peaks of the Balkans trails in Kosovo as possible, and then take an unofficial linking track to connect it all up.

Over three days we hiked parts of three different stages of the Peaks of the Balkans, with our own little changes and inclusions along the way.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

Hiking Hajla Kosovo

To start our hiking trip, we decided to ease our way in with a return hike from the village of Drelaj up to Mt Hajla and back. This hike worked with our chosen accommodation for the first night and would let us explore Kosovo’s Rugova Valley a little. With our Rugova Valley hike we covered a 7km section of the Reka e Allagёs to Drelaj to Kucishtё route and actually did it twice, since it was a return trip.

Along the way we travelled from gentle farmland and forest to open plains and right up to the peak of Mt Hajla at 2,403 metres elevation. We also got to see one of the region’s remote villages and even sit down with a local family. The experience of hiking around Rugova Canyon was an absolute blast and makes for an excellent day hike if you only have one day in the area. The formal Peaks of the Balkans doesn’t actually include Hajla but I believe some guided tours do include it.

Cutting Our Own Path Cross Country

Hiking in Kosovo

Heading down from the Jelenak Pass, it wasn’t long before we arrived at some signposts. In one direction was the main trail leading to the border of Montenegro, and off to the side our small track east. The sign pointed to both Milishevc and Lojza, the name of our intended accommodation for the evening.

Having seen various other hikers around earlier that day, it was strange to be off on our own now. The trail here was faint but quite easy as we skirted around the sides of the highest mountains in the area. Unfortunately, after a while, we lost the trail completely . Using our navigation apps we were confident we knew which direction to head though, so we pressed on for quite a while without a clear trail.

We did re-find the trail again after an hour or so, and left the open fields for forest. A trail marker further along tricked us into a detour that took us down into a valley unnecessarily, but it didn’t lead to much of a delay. And so it was after a full days hike that we arrived at Lojza and stumbled into the owner of our guesthouse for the evening.

Leaving from Milishevc Back to Peja

kosovo hiking tour

After an evening of possibly too much homemade raki, we set out to try and find out way back to Peja. From Lojza it was a short walk up hill to Milishevc, where we could then re-join the established Peaks of the Balkans trail. The hike would take us along the first 9km of the Milishevc to Reka E Allagёs section, ending at the roadside Rugova Camp.

Whether it was due to our foggy minds or a missed trail marker, we had a little trouble actually finding the proper start of the trail. Instead, we relied again on our GPS app to venture off the dirt road at roughly the right spot. A steep climb straight up the hillside quickly took it out of us, but we knew that was the worst of it. Upon reaching the top of the climb at the Lumbardhi ridge, we met with highland meadows and a small reservoir for the local cattle.

Then came the descent, a whopping 1200 metres of it. From mountain pastures the trail quickly passed down into forest and our sweeping views were lost to endless greenery. While it had kindly refrained from raining on us during the hike, latent water on the track meant for plenty of mud the deeper we got into the forest. Hours of descending through constant thick forest ultimately brought us to the welcome sight of the Rugova Camp restaurant.

Having clambered down to the Rugova Camp, we had two options for getting back to Peja that didn’t involve walking. We could either wait an hour or more for the bus or hitchhike. We ended up hitchhiking back to Peja , which was a fun little adventure all on its own.

Accommodation on Peaks of the Balkans

kosovo hiking tour

The route for Peaks of the Balkans passes through quite remote areas at times, meaning your accommodation options can be quite limited.  That may not be the case in popular places like Theth and Valbonia in Albania, but it certainly is in Kosovo. While there are some options around Reka E Allagёs and Kucishtё, we only found one option in each place we stayed.

For out night in Drelaj between climbing Mount Hajla and heading off for Kucishtё we stayed at the Shqiponja Guesthouse. It’s quite a large guesthouse and relatively contemporary, with hot water and a big family table. Over near Milishevc we stayed at Guesthouse Lojza, a cosy family-run log cabin that’s great value.

They even had a freshwater fountain with ice cold beer in it for when you arrive. At both places we arrived without a booking, which can be risky if large groups are going through. Both have Facebook pages which you can try to reach them through.

Travel Tips for Visiting Here

kosovo hiking tour

Given that the Peaks of the Balkans and Kosovo in general are a bit off the beaten track, it may help if I provide some personal advice for visiting. This is definitely a place where you need to come prepared, so be sure to pack proper hiking gear. We stocked up on snacks and food in Peja which worked out great for our on the trails, and bought pack lunches from our overnight accommodation.

As for getting to this corner of Kosovo, Peja is definitely the easiest starting point. From the city’s bus station, there is a private minibus service up into Rugova Canyon, stopping along the road at Rugova Camp, Drelaj and Kucishtё. The 2019 timetable had two departures a day, with a 7am and 3pm bus up, 8:30am and 4:30pm bus back, and two extra summer services. Alternatively, you can take a taxi into Rugova Canyon and hitchhike your way out like we did.

Navigation while up in the mountains is another thing to think about. Google Maps is pretty useless up here, with many places just not showing up at all.  We used OsmAnd and Backcountry to find our way around, which worked pretty well, even if we did get a little lost at one point. Try and find GPX files like these for the proper sections as that will at least give you a guide of where things are.

Have you heard of or even walked the Peaks of the Balkans hiking trail before? Does the idea of spending 10-12 days trekking through the Balkans appeal to you? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

Have to admit, “The hills are alive…” went through my mind a few times while looking through your gorgeous photos! These are beautiful hikes, in an area we are completely unfamiliar with. We’d surely get lost a few times…do you know if there are guided groups in the area? Sounds like a popular area for hiking, so…maybe?

Peaks of the Balkans

Peaks of the Balkans | Self guided tour 10 days

10 hiking days at Peaks of the Balkans, a journey that will take you through three countries:  Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro. This is one of the most diversified walking pathways in the world, winding through meadows, mountain summits, lakes, and woodlands. The views and pathways change, transitioning from stony paths and stark summits to meadows brimming with flowers and plants, where nature has been allowed to flourish.

Day 1: Arrival in Shkodra

The tour includes the first night in Shkodra after arriving in Albania. You can use this day to enjoy the wealth of Shkodra cultural offer.

Day 2: Transfer to Theth. Hike Theth – Nderlyse – Theth

The village of Theth is one of the most picturesque places in Northern Albania. Preserved by the wild nature and very bad roads, the village has still the Kulla and other buildings dating back to Middle Ages. The village is 100 percent Roman Catholic and has the most unique structure in the world. Kulla e Ngujimit, which is a three-story rock building with no windows. It served as the self-imposed exile for people who were involved in blood feuds.

Distance: 10 km,   ↑ 266 m   ↓ 435 m

Day 3: Hike Theth – Valbona

Today you will do one of Albania’s most iconic hikes from Theth (728 m) over the Valbona Pass (1759 m) to the town of Valbona (995 m) in the heart of the eponymous national park. This 20- kilometer route follows the path of an ancient mule track linking the tribal regions of Shala and Nikaj.

Distance: 19.5 km,   ↑ 1068 m   ↓850 m

Peaks of the Balkans Self guided tour five days

Day 4: Hike Valbona – Cerem

There are two possible routes from Valbone to Cerem : the ‘low’ (valley) route and the spectacular, the ‘high’ route via Prosllopi Pass (the one we do). This trail will go through Kollata and it is the longest trail of the hike. This has been opened as the usual Valbona – Cerrem through the ‘low’ trail is mostly a tractor trail offering very little. The Kollata trail is very nice and offers views on the steep rocky mountain of Kollata, which is used for climbing.

Distance: 14 km,   ↑ 1200 m   ↓950 m

Day 5: Hike Cerem – Doberdol

Today you will walk between two shepherd’s villages which are inhabited only during the summer in order to use the abundant pastures. Doberdol a village which is connected to the world only by small tracks is not reachable by cars. The village is situated below the triple-border point between Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro. On the way you will pass through the village of Balqin where you can stop for a glass of milk served by the local shepherds.

This part of the mountains is under strict protection, as they are also home to the glacial lakes of Sulbica platou. Gashi valley was included in the UNESCO Natural World Heritage list in 2017.

Distance: 15.5 km,   ↑ 1030 m   ↓440 m

Day 6: Hike Doberdol – Gjeravica peak – Doberdol

In this trail, you will be climbing the highest mountain of Kosovo and the second-highest of the Accursed mountains after Jezerca peak. The route to the summit from Doberdol is a straightforward hike. This is a loop path that will take you to Kosovo, a border that is almost not protected at all. However, during the communist regimes in this part of the world, this was the border between Albania and Yugoslavia and one of the most protected borders in the world.

Distance: 18 km,   ↑ 915 m   ↓915 m

kosovo hiking tour

Day 7: Hike Doberdol – Milisevc

You will be hiking again between two shepherds’ villages in two different countries, however sharing the same culture and language. These two valleys have been connected by culture but disconnected by political borders. Around 1 hr from the Guesthouse, you will reach the narrow pass on the border with Montengro, where from the views are spectacular. From here you will be climbing the 2366 m Tromedja (Three Border peak).

This part of the mountain is very well protected as from Milisevc you are connected to the biggest city next to the mountain Peja, which we also call the capital of the Accursed Mountains.

Distance: 15.8 km,   ↑ 915 m   ↓980 m

Day 8: Hike Milisevc – Babino Polje

This intense 15. 8- kilometer hike offers some of the region’s most breathtaking views, passing a glacial lake and water sources. Some people decide to divide this hike in two parts: a 7.4- kilometer ascent on the first day and 8.4- kilometer descent on the second day, however, we will finish this hike in one day. As such it is not the longest hike during the trip. This part of the mountain is expected to be “tourist-free” and it offers spectacular views of the City of Peja and the rest of the Accursed Mountains.

 Distance: 15.8 km,   ↑ 1150 m   ↓1100 m

Day 9: Transfer Babino Polje – Grbaja Valley. Hike to Taljanka peak. Transfer to Vusanje

Gerbaja situated in Montenegro was considered as the most beautiful valley in Tito’s Yugoslavia home to now 7 independent states. It’s a detour from the classic Peaks of the Balkans. We consider that it is a pity this valley was left out of the classic Peaks of the Balkans. To start the hike, you will take a 20 minutes transport. The hike will start with a climb in Taljanka peak green heaven with a view on Karanfil a rough rock massive.

 Distance: 9.8 km,   ↑ 834 m   ↓908 m

kosovo hiking tour

Day 10: Hike Vusanje – Theth. Transfer to Shkodra

From Vusanje Prokletije, you will begin the 21-kilometer hike to the historic Albanian village of Theth. The path passes along the craggiest part of the Accursed Mountains or Prokletije/Albanian Alps, which was a forbidden zone during the Communist era. In addition to the dramatic cliffs that form the backdrop for the day’s hike, you will also see a military bunker and the old border crossing signs as you cross into Albania.

After the hike, you will be transferred to Shkoder.

Distance: 21.3 km,   ↑ 1110 m   ↓1440 m

The Rugova Valley: Solo Trekking in Kosovo’s Accursed Mountains

The Rugova Valley, part of the Western Balkans’ Accursed Mountains group, is one of the most scenic parts of Kosovo. But few travelers make it out to this remote part of the country, and information on hikes in the region is scarce. While I didn’t end going on the hike I’d originally planned, I can confirm that hiking in the Rugova Valley is indeed possible as a day trip from Peja . Keep reading to find out how.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

I first learned about the Rugova Valley from a friendly Kosovar who gave me a ride back to my hotel from Sarandë , Albania’s Blue Point. He lives in Germany and was telling me about how even German-language travel magazines were raving about Rugova.

And so I made sure to include it in my Kosovo itinerary. But I had little idea of the best way to go about hiking in the Rugova Valley, as online searches yielded little information.

Some sites did, however, mention that the most exciting hike in the area is the one to Hajla Peak, just along Kosovo’s northern border with Montenegro.

Arriving in Peja, nobody at my hotel could give me much info, and so I walked over to the Rugova Valley Tourist Information Center to the west of the city.

The friendly staff there explained that to do the Hajla Peak trek, a taxi to the starting point would cost 35 euro one-way! But there’s another hike that I could easily do by public bus, they explained.

Being on a budget and without a vehicle, I went ahead with their suggestion and made plans to hike to the Leqinat and Drelaj (or ‘Little Leqinat’) lakes.

Having done it, I can say that it’s a relatively easy and calming hike with beautiful scenery along the way. But frankly speaking, it’s not nearly as thrilling as the popular Valbonë to Theth hike, also in the Accursed Mountains but on the Albanian side of the border.

Be that as it may, if you’re already visiting Peja, the hike to Leqinat Lake is well worth setting aside a day for.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

The Hike to Leqinat Lake

About this hike.

Lake Leqinat Hiking Route

THE BASICS: Getting off the bus in the village of Kuqishtë (see below), the hike to Leqinat Lake takes a little over 2 hours. From there, it’s an additional 20 minutes to the second lake called Drelaj (or ‘Little Leqinat’).

Along the way, you will pass through a village with a well-known restaurant called Te Liqeni, which you can stop at either before or after visiting the lakes.

This hike could be categorized as ‘easy’ overall, with only one steep and strenuous section between the restaurant and the lake.

GETTING THERE AND BACK: From Peja, take the 8:00 bus from platform 21 bound for Kuqishtë. You should then easily be able to make it back to the bus stop where you got dropped off in time for the 15:00 return bus. The ride only costs a few euro.

The company that operates the buses is called Nikçi, and you can find updated timetables on their Facebook page .

For several years, the buses used to leave at 7:00. And at the time of my visit, various people in Peja were still telling me the outdated departure time. Therefore, it’s important to check online or at the bus station for the latest timetable.

RECOMMENDED APPS: The only app you need for this hike is Maps.me, a free app that also works offline. The hiking trail is marked clearly and the time estimations are pretty accurate.

WHAT TO BRING: Given the ease of the hike and the existence of a restaurant along the way, there’s little you need to prepare other than some decent shoes and perhaps a raincoat.

After a scenic ride from Peja, which lasts around 30 minutes, I was dropped off at the bus stop of Kuqishtë. Loading up Maps.me, I saw that the hike to the first lake would take around 2 hours and ten minutes.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

Leaving the small bus stop, you should immediately see the road fork in two, and you’ll want to choose the flat road to the left. This will take you south for a while.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

If there’s one major downside to this hike, it’s that about half of it requires you to walk along the road. I never like ‘hiking’ on roads, which always feels like cheating. And it’s never fun to repeatedly move out of the way for speeding vehicles.

But in this case, there’s simply no other option. And traffic wasn’t altogether too bad, at least.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

Hiking in the Rugova Valley is just one section of a much wider trail network called Peaks of the Balkans . This massive hiking route stretches out to 192 km in total, taking hikers through the Accursed Mountains of three different countries: Kosovo, Montenegro and Albania.

In total, the trek would take at least 10 days to complete, though it’s certainly possible to choose certain sections which suit you. Obviously, hiking with your own tent, sleeping bag, and of course, passport, is a must for this hike.

It seems to be popular, as during this short day hike, I spotted at least four other trekkers carrying huge loads on their backs. Clearly, they were in for a much longer journey than I was.

Speaking of international borders, you’ll realize that when looking closely at the Maps.me route, the trail to Leqinat Lake weaves in and out of Montenegrin territory at some points.

But don’t worry: there are no border guards around here to hassle hikers, and you don’t need your ID as long as you’re coming as a day hike from Peja.

kosovo hiking tour

Before long, the climb will gradually get steeper. And the higher you get, the more impressive the views will become. As indicated by Maps.me, there’s also a lookout point you can check out by briefly walking off-road not long before you reach the next village.

While not the most impressive view you’ll see on this hike, it’s worth the several-minute detour.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

After having walked about 90 minutes from the bus stop, you’ll finally get to leave the main road behind. But it’s not time to ditch civilization just yet. On the contrary, you’ll encounter a small but growing village, complete with brand new tourist villas.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

It’s also here that you’ll find the restaurant Te Liqeni, which is reasonably priced and offers a great view of the surrounding mountains. But, anticipating rain at any moment, I decided to save it for the return trip.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

While this is an overall straightforward hike, the trickiest bit is making your way out of the village. There are a couple of different alternate trails you can take, but you should eventually make it to a narrow grassy meadow.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

Continue heading south, and the trail will gradually get steeper, making for the most strenuous part of the entire hike. But this section is also one of the hike’s most scenic, offering clear views of the Accursed Mountains.

The origins of the nickname are a mystery. While their beauty is unmistakable, the rugged mountains simultaneously take on a rather ominous appearance. Furthermore, numerous local legends tell of hardships endured by those trying to make their way through this mountain range.

With dark clouds forming above me in the sky, my surroundings started to appear even more menacing than usual.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

After half an hour or so of a steep ascent, I was finally rewarded with views of Leqinat Lake, one of the scenic highlights of hiking in the Rugova Valley. The tranquil lake sits at an elevation of 1,970 m and is named after the nearby Leqinat peak.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

Local families like to come here for picnics, while visitors can ride around on a small raft for 2.50 euro. While I’d read that some people also like to swim here, the water appeared quite shallow and muddy.

And besides, despite arriving in the peak of summer, it was chilly enough for long sleeves given the altitude and cloudy weather.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

In fact, just after my arrival, it started to rain. And so I took cover under a tree, finally getting into the snacks I’d packed for the hike.

Luckily the rain subsided after about ten minutes, and I took advantage of the opportunity to make it to my final destination, Little Leqinat.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

The hike between the lakes takes just about twenty minutes, but it’s one of the most striking sections of the entire journey, giving you clear views of a large valley in the distance.

It’s also around here that you’ll find a natural spring where you can fill up your water bottle.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

Still managing to stay dry, I made it to Little Lequinat, also known as Derlaj, which only measures out to 100 by 40 m. As a local would later tell me, this lake is artificial. But its picturesque setting with snowy mountains in the background makes for a great finale to this day hike.

kosovo hiking tour

Resting my legs for a while, it began to rain again, and I decided to begin my return before ending up too soaked. Luckily, however, it stopped again after several minutes, and the weather would remain dry for the rest of the day.

Hiking in the Rugova Valley

Back past the first lake, I ran into a local Kosovar family who asked me how much further the lake was. Then, about an hour later, after finishing my light meal at the Te Liqeni restaurant, I was back on the main road when a car pulled over next to me. It turned out to be the same family, and they offered me a ride back down.

While I still could’ve easily made it on foot in time for the 15:00 return bus, I accepted their offer, as the walk from that point would be relatively uneventful. And it was a fitting end to the excursion. As mentioned above, it was a hospitable Kosovar giving me a ride in Albania who’d told me about the Rugova Valley in the first place!

Back at the bus stop, I passed the with a book. Luckily, the return bus arrived right on time.

Additional Info

Peja can easily be reached from other cities in Kosovo like Prizren (2 hr) and Pristina (90 min). Kosovo has an organized and well-functioning bus system (a pleasant surprise for those coming straight from Albania!). Buses leave on a set schedule, and most buses in Kosovo are larger coach buses as opposed to cramped minivans.

Peja can also be reached directly from Podgorica, Montenegro.

Additionally, there are a few trains per day running between Peja and Pristina.

Peja is a small city. But in regards to location, those getting around Kosovo via public transport should base themselves within reasonable waking distance from the bus station, which is about 15 minutes on foot from the city center.

As in Pristina, accommodation options in Peja are a bit expensive when compared with neighboring countries.

After checking the options on both Airbnb and Booking, I went with the highly-rated Central Hostel . For three nights it cost me €48, or US$56.

While the location was great, my private room lacked its own bathroom. Nor did it have an AC or even fan, even during the peak of summer!

Although the heat was bearable with the windows open, the problem was that being in the center of town, things could get very noisy at night. In addition to traffic noise, people would sometimes gather and chat just below my window. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep great in Peja.

But with no cheaper options for a private room at the time of writing, Central Hostel is pretty much the only decent choice if you’re a budget traveler.

Level of the Tour: Fit

The hikes usually last between five and six hours per day, so previous hiking experience is an advantage, but not necessary for those who are in very good shape. During the hikes, participants must carry their own day pack.

Is it possible to book the tour at short notice?

Yes, the tour can easily be booked just a few days in advance.

Starting point/end point: Peja, Kosovo

The tour starts for you in Peja from the hotel/guest house. You are welcome to leave the rest of your luggage that you don’t need during the hike at the hotel in Peja and take it back with you on your return.

How do I get from Pristina or Prizren to Peja?

The Rugova Gorge is located in the Accursed Mountains (Prokletije), just north-west of the town of Peja in Kosovo. Peja is a medium-sized town surrounded by Mountains. Trains run from Prishtina to Peja twice a day. There is also a bus every hour from Prishtina (main bus station) via Prizren to Peja. We can also organise a private transfer Pristina <-> Peja for 60 EUR per vehicle (max 3 persons).

Terrain during the hikes

This hiking trail is characterised by leisurely descents and ascents. The route leads over a relief that represents alpine terrain with steep slopes, river valleys carved into the mountain, rocky peaks, mountain pine belts etc. However, the paths chosen are mostly easy to walk on and safe.

Food and water

The food in this part of the world is something you will look forward to at the end of every day. The food is freshly prepared in the traditional way and has a mix of Balkan, Turkish and European influences. In the guest houses, breakfast is simple, home-baked bread with locally grown vegetables, dairy products and eggs. For dinner there are salads, traditional soups, meat dishes, vegetables and pies. The guesthouses also provide you with a packed lunch, which often includes a sandwich with cheese and vegetables. Vegetarians and diets are not a problem as the host families can offer alternatives. Remember to take your water bottle with you to refill it on the way. You can get water from water sources along the way or from the taps in the guesthouses, as this is also drinkable water. However, if you are concerned about drinking untreated water, we recommend that you take water purification tablets with you.

Cross ‘hiking to Machu Picchu’ off your bucket list as you spend days adventuring through the country’s heartland in the Sacred Valley and Ollantaytambo before arriving at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed site itself. Make sure your camera is fully charged; you'll want to remember this trip.

Chances are you’ve never seen a region as mind-blowing as Patagonia; there are the jagged peaks of the Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre mountain ranges, the dazzling icescape of Perito Moreno Glacier and some of the best hikes in all of South America. When we put it like that, how can an avid adventurer spend 8 days wandering its mesmerizing landscapes and not fall in love? Answer: you can’t.

Get lost in Patagonia’s beauty with a six-day trek through the stunning Torres del Paine National Park. Walk past glacial lakes and marvel at soaring mountain peaks as you set your sights on a landscape of untouched wilderness. Yes, watch where you’re putting your feet, but remember to look up - this national park is also full of striking animals (read: flamingoes), and you don’t want to miss a thing.

What types of walking & hiking trips does Intrepid offer?

We have two main styles of walking & trekking trips:

Center-based – on a center-based trip, you'll be based in the center of the action, meaning you can enjoy the comfort of the same room every day (as well as only unpacking once) and the best restaurants and attractions in the area. Think Chamonix in the French Alps, Dobbiaco in the Dolomites or a rustic hotel in Yosemite Valley. We'll pick the best walks and hikes available either directly from your accommodation or just a short bus or train ride away. To put it bluntly – you'll be fairly comfortable while experiencing the best trails going 'round.

Point-to-point – on a point-to-point trip, you'll start in A and finish in B. We'll walk from one place to the other pretty much every day. However, we do throw in a rest day every now and then depending on the region and the miles we need to cover. Point-to-point treks include the Inca Trail, Mount Everest Base Camp, Hadrian’s Wall and the Mont Blanc Circuit. In most cases, we'll transfer your main luggage across to the next destination, so all you need to carry is the essentials (water, sun protection, waterproofs, extra layers, snacks, etc.).

What's included in a walking & trekking trip?

We include accommodation as per the itinerary, as well as transportation to and from trailheads and to all other included activities (note: we often use public transport to mingle with the locals and get a feel for local life). We also include all hiking permits, whether it's in the Himalayas or US National Parks. On top of that, we provide highly qualified, experienced and passionate local leaders to guide you throughout the trip.

How fit do I need to be to join a walking & trekking trip?

Our trips span the gamut of active adventures from relatively easy, leisurely walks to multi-day treks in high mountains. But no matter what degree of difficulty or distance you choose, we recommend that you have a reasonable level of fitness to ensure you get the most out of your trip. Try to commit to some type of physical training program for a couple of before you depart.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Long walks: go on regular 3-6 hour walks wearing the boots you’re taking and carrying a small backpack to get comfortable with carrying your gear for long stretches
  • Aerobic exercise: running, distance cycling and other aerobic classes at gyms (like pump, spin, zumba and circuit classes) are good for boosting your fitness and stamina
  • Strength training: doing body weight training like pushups, squats, dips, lunges, etc. helps to build up your strength, which is needed for steady mountain climbs (bootcamp sessions are perfect for this type of training)

What should I pack for a walking trip in South America?

It depends on where you're going, what the weather will be like and how difficult the walk that you plan to do is. Generally, it's a good idea to ensure you have the following essentials:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (make sure they're broken in if you buy a new pair!)
  • Backpack/day bag
  • Leggings, shorts or hiking pants
  • A loose, long-sleeved shirt
  • Sweater or sweatshirt
  • Retractable walking poles
  • Reusable water bottle

Are Intrepid's South America walking tours accessible?

We're committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
