Tea Farms In Tigoni: An Age-Old History Of Kenyan Culture and Taste

Gatura Greens

For centuries, tea has graced the tables of humanity: fuelling wars but also bonding societies in a quest for the crop that is packed with caffeine, theobromine, theophylline and l-theanine. However, before it became the popular beverage we know it to be today, and before Kenyan tea from lush farms became the desired treat it is, research shows that tea was not always consumed as such. It was utilised in burial rituals among Chinese royalty and then adopted other uses, like dowry payment for aristocrats around 640 A.D.

A thousand years later, in the 1600s, the buds would land on the British Isles, finding their way into daily culinary preferences as it provided relief for workers contending with the struggles of manual labour. Soon after, sugar was paired with the drink and with this marriage, modern tea culture was born. Tea is universal but unique to each culture as you move across the globe, and that is what’s so fascinating about these aromatic leaves.

In Kenya, tea – or chai as it is known in Swahili – is more than just a source of nutrition. It was introduced during the colonial period in what is now present-day Limuru (specifically Tigoni) because of the region’s geographical importance and has grown in into a large industry. Here, tea grows at a high altitude and in a tropical climate, with red clay volcanic soil and humidity, which are the perfect conditions for year-round cultivation. The natural conditions also make pests nearly non-existent; thus, pesticides are generally not used, and that is why Kenyan tea is often labelled as “environmentally friendly” and “organic”.

These acres of Kenyan tea farms play a vital role in the nation’s culture as tea breaks are one of best ways for people to bond. Drinking chai in Kenya is a simple yet grand affair borrowed from historic British and Asian connections. Made with milk and lots of sugar, it’s served through out the day with mandazi or is sometimes spiced up to reflect the Indian influence in this region. Economically, the country is second only to China when it comes to production and remains the largest global tea exporter, accounting for 25% of all tea exports worldwide.

Hence, visiting a Kenyan tea farm is a unique experience to add to your East African bucket list!

Where Are The Tigoni Tea Farms Located?

The Tigoni tea farms can be found in and around the town of Limuru, about 45 minutes northwest of Nairobi . As you drive on the long winding roads, you are met with a beautiful sight of sprawling lush, green plantations.

The Best Tea Farms In Tigoni

Kiambethu tea farm.

The main and most popular estate in Limuru is the  Kiambethu Tea Farm . Here, visitors are not only blessed with tranquil terrain, delicious drinks, and tea picking adventures, but you can also explore the factories and learn about the tea processing and production that’s been taking place for nearly a century.

Beyond the tea itself, a tour of the farm also includes a guided walk to a nearby indigenous forest where you will discover indigenous plants and uncover how they have been used traditionally over many decades, and cycling and horse riding opportunities.

If that’s still not enough, wine and cheese tasting can enjoyed at the Brown’s Cheese Factory , so you can make a the perfect day trip of it!

Tours take place from Thursday to Sunday each week, starting at 11 am.

Gathoni Sensory Garden & Tea Farm

Gathoni Tea Farm is a world of tranquility, aroma and flavour, and as one of Kenya’s oldest tea farms, is a true testament to a thriving industry that has become culturally significant. Wander a picturesque landscape featuring great history, luxurious tea tasting and of course, acres of deep green rows where guests are taught how to pick, roll and roast the leaves.

Adding to this peaceful experience, is the famously known Naishola and Naiposha Gardens, where visitors can take a soothing, sensory stroll and appreciate enchanting views of Lake Tigoni.

Tours take place from everyday, starting at 10 am.

What If The Tigoni Tea Farms Are Closed?

If you find yourself visiting Nairobi and the tea farms happen to be closed, don’t let that deter you from exploring Limuru. You can still drive along the plantations and stop on the side of the road to take a picture or two, and then continue your way to Limuru Waterfall for a picnic.

As you drive through the gate to the picnic site where the waterfall is located, the high altitude offers stunning, panoramic views of the plantations before you take the steep but short walk down to the waterfall and enjoy the serenity of your surroundings. I recommend visiting the waterfalls as early in the morning as possible, so you have it all to yourself.

Other Wonderful Tea Farms In Kenya

While Limuru is the most popular place to take a tour of a Kenyan tea farm, there are various others spread across the country – many of which are still in driving distance of Nairobi.

The Gatura Greens Tea Farm in Muranga County is home to the first purple tea plantations in the country and offers one the best tours I’ve ever taken. Fall in love with gorgeous scenery and you try picking your own leaves, indulge a tea tasting session and get your steps in as you hike down to a waterfall – all before enjoying a gourmet lunch!

This owner of this tea farm does a wonderful job of explaining how tea is grown and processed. It was very educational! We sat in her living room as she explained things. The actual tea farm is quite small (2 acres) and doesn’t give the feeling of a large tea plantation . The walk through the natural forest was nice but the guide wasn’t very informative. The food was excellent and everything was well appointed. One could imagine tea time in the early 20s. Highly recommend

Me and my boyfriend went to Kiambethu Tea Farm in September. We were picked up from a private residence and driven to the tea farm. Our driver was around an hour early but otherwise he was great. He told us many things about Kenya on the way and was a very nice driver. The views were beautiful, the food was great and overall the experience was great. It’s a great activity for tea lovers.

KIAMBETHU TEA FARM DAY TOUR

Clients have been going to this special “Mrs. Mitchall’s Tea Plantation” for over 20 years and 99% have enjoyed the experience.

The Kiambethu tea farm is about an hour’s drive away from the hustle and bustle from Nairobi and as such makes a welcome day trip from the capital for adults and children!

Situated twenty miles from Nairobi, Kiambethu has been the family home of one of the earliest tea growers in Kenya. The farm dates back to 1910 and the present house, set amidst colorful gardens, has been home to four generations. You will arrive at 11:00 a.m. and over a cup of tea or coffee the process of making tea is informally explained, followed by an opportunity to see tea in the field. You will take a walk in indigenous forest with the resident Kenyan guide who will identify the plants and explain how they are traditionally used. You will see the Colobus monkeys close up and wander in the gardens, which are home to a wide variety of birds. When you return to the house, you will enjoy a pre-lunch drink on the veranda with sweeping views across the tea fields to the Ngong Hills. Lunch is prepared with vegetables from the garden and desserts are topped with cream from the herd of Channel Island cows on the farm.

The tour ends with a relaxed lunch. Again most of the produce is locally sourced and when making reservations inform us of any dietary requirements! The veggie options are fantastic. Lunch is a 3 course affair with complementary beverages – wine, beers, sherry, soft drinks and of course teas and coffee!

Where you walk, see birds, see tea farming and tea process making, have lunch freshly cooked and a great get away from Nairobi for only 30 mins.

I was a bit worried at the beginning because he didn't seem very responsive on WhatsApp. However, I was truly impressed by our journey with him. I then realized he is a real doer, with tons of experience in safaris. He knows almost all the animals we encountered and explained what they are to us. He also has very good relationships with other drivers we met along the way, which is why he is well-informed about the animals' whereabouts. Initially, we didn't see any lions, but he took the initiative to talk to people and found out where to find them. Eventually, we managed to see some gorgeous lion families! Overall, our guide is very dependable, trustworthy, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend him. Read more Written March 11, 2024

Wasili were highly recommended and I can see why! Evans was my guide - prompt pickup, great conversation throughout. He shared with me some of the history of the city and the park and was extremely knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the park. We spent >6 hours together and saw all kinds of wildlife and scenery. He was in constant contact with other guides over the radio about where particular animals were sighted and at one point took off down a road saying that he had seen giraffes walking that way and they were going to cross it on their way to water. Sure enough, they crossed the road right in front of us and we were the only ones there... Can't say enough good things about Evans - great vehicle, conversation, knowledgeable and a wonderful way to spend the afternoon! Read more Written February 16, 2024

  • LoveTravelToTheWorld 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic safari holiday with Wasili Safaris I spent 7 days in Kenya early october 2023. I had decided to stay in Nairobi the entire stay and make it as departure and return point for all my tours. Kamau aka Julius came up with a wonderful planning for my holiday (Nairobi National Park - Elephant orphenage - Blixen Museum - Girafe Center - Amboseli Park - Hell's Gate Park by bike - Lake Naivasha - The Carnivore Restaurant - Ol Pejeta Park - Lake Nakuru - Nairobi City Tour - Visit to coffee farm - Visit to tea farm all this together with both transfer from/to the airport. Everything went so perfect. My best holiday ever ! Kamau know all the parks perfectly and know where are the best places to spot the animals. He was very patient and stopped at all animals we spotted to allow me to take pictures. Even after having seen a million of zebras, i was still exited to see another one. One good advice for safari first timers like me : see those animals with your chidhood eyes. I did not had the chance to spot a male lion during my differents safaris- 2 females were spotted however. So, i decided to add a early last tour to Nairobi National Park before going to the airport. Kamau propose me for this last tour not to photo stop at any animals we might see but to focus on the search for a lion and drive in circle around the place where one was spotted the day before as they does normally never walk too far from a day to another. During our search, Kamau was in permanent contact by radio and mobile phone with the other drivers. I had to admit i had lost the hope in spotting one when Kamau suddendly told me to quickly sit in the car because he just had been warned of a lion spotting. He drove as fast as he could drive on those roads to allow me to arrive on time before it was gone. Always trust the expert and Kamau is one of them. 100% recommendable for a perfect safari holiday in Kenya. Thanks again for this memorable moments. Read more Written October 28, 2023

A ficionados of all things caffeinated may think of Ethiopia when they think of coffee-producing African countries — but Kenyan coffee is also exceptionally tasty. Kenya borders Ethiopia, with similar growing conditions to its more well-known neighbor. Most of the Kenyan coffee and tea farms are at elevations of around 6,000 feet or more, resulting in coffees with fruity, spicy, and more acidic tasting notes, as well as teas with low bitterness and very robust flavors.

Fortunately, many of the best Kenyan coffee and tea farms that offer tours are close to Nairobi , so it’s not hard for tourists to make a half-day visit.

Most Kenyan coffee grown today is of the Arabica variety, first introduced by missionaries to Africa in the late 1800s. Around 1900, the British East African Company (a British import/export company focused on products from Africa) was given control of what was then called the East Africa Protectorate, which would later become Kenya. When the British East African Company went belly-up, the British Government took control of Kenya. And by 1920, many of the British colonizers occupying the region grew coffee on land they took, despite the land already being occupied by Indigenous groups like the Kikuyus and Maasai.

Kenya gained its independence in 1963, by which point most coffee production had already been turned over to Kenyan families and businesses, especially after the British allowed Kenyans to grow coffee and tea following the end of the Mau Mau Uprising in 1956.

Today, most Kenyan coffee and tea is grown on small family farms operating as collectives to sell their crops to buyers. But some larger tea and coffee farms offer options for tours and tastings for visitors, most of which are less than an hour from Nairobi.

As with many agricultural industries in many countries, workers can be under-compensated for what is sometimes very laborious work. Opt for fair trade coffees and teas when possible and be sure to ask lots of questions on these tours if there are any concerns about the sustainability or impact of the operations.

These are four of the best Kenyan coffee and tea farms for travelers to visit on their day off from safaris, visiting Maasai villages, and watching the famous wildebeest migration, plus one can’t-miss coffee shop in the heart of a gorgeous urban park.

Kenyan tea farm tours

Kiambethu tea farm.

Kiambethu Tea Farm was established in 1910 and is still run by the same family, albeit five generations removed. The farm is in the hillsides about 45 minutes from Nairobi at an elevation of 7,500 feet, which gives many of its teas qualities associated with high-elevation growing. They’re less bitter and tend to have a more robust flavor, which means a full-bodies glass of tea with fewer leaves. It also means they don’t have to use much in the way of pesticides.

Visitors can learn about the qualities of high-elevation tea and the growing process by spending the day at the Kiambethu Tea Farm.

It’s actually much more than just a tour of the farm. As with most tours, it includes a cup of tea, a walk-through of the production facility, and a visit to the tea fields. But the guest experience at Kiambethu also includes a guided forest walk with a Kenyan naturalist who will point out flora and fauna (like Columbus monkeys) along the way. Then, it’s back to the farm for a stroll through the gardens before a three-course lunch using local ingredients. The experience is offered Thursday through Sunday, tickets are around 4,000 Kenyan Shillings (about $33), and advanced booking is essential.

Guests are welcome to visit on their own, though several companies offer tours that include transportation from Nairobi .

Gatura Greens

Gatura Greens — Kenya’s first purple tea farm — offers more than just a tea tour. Guests actually get a lesson in how to hand-pick tea before picking their own leaves, which they’ll then learn to prepare and brew.

Purple tea is rare, and nearly all of it comes from Kenya. Gatura Green’s founder first planted tea in 1959 as one of the first Kenyans allowed to grow the plant. His son — the current owner’s father — worked with a public/private co-op that isolated the genes for purple tea and eventually planted purple tea across most of the farm. Today, his children own the farm with a rentable country house, camping land, and a trail through the forest to a large waterfall and swimming hole.

Visitors to the Kenyan tea farm can rent the 12-person country house (which includes unlimited tea, of course) for $250 a night or camp on the farm for a reasonable $15 a night. Tours are an all-day affair, starting at 9:30 AM with the tea-picking lessons before moving to the main house to roll and pack the teas. Once the day warms up, it’s off for a quick hike to the waterfall for a leisurely swim before returning to the farm for a three-course lunch. After lunch, it’s time for a tea tasting, after which guests can stay as long as they like, right up through the evening bonfire.

Tours are $35 per person and should be booked in advance . The farm is about an hour from Nairobi, and Gatura Greens can arrange transportation at an extra cost.

Kenyan coffee farm tours

One of the most well-known Kenyan coffee farms is Fairview Estates . It’s one of the closest Kenyan coffee tours to Nairobi, about 25 minutes outside the city.

Tours are offered twice daily (10 AM and 2 PM) and last about two hours, including a post-tour tasting of a few of the most popular blends. Guests are encouraged to bring snacks or lunch for a picnic on the grounds, though it’s also possible to order a packed lunch in advance for 1000 Kenyan Shillings (around $9). Reservations for tours are recommended but not essential.

Fairview is one of the larger Kenyan coffee estates in the country, with 100 acres of coffee beans planted in an average season. During the harvest season (usually October or November), the farm hires up to 400 people to help with harvesting, pruning, and sorting beans. The farm also has plenty of non-coffee land, including trails for birdwatching and forest walks, a large dairy area, and a coffee shop where guests can grab a coffee to go or pick up bags of their favorite beans. Coffee by the bag starts at is about $10.

Karunguru Coffee Estate

The land that would become the Karunguru Coffee Estate was first planted with coffee beans in 1928 by British transplants. But in 1978, it was purchased by the Kariithi family, which still runs and operates the Kenyan coffee farm.

Today, Karunguru covers 500 acres, producing only Arabica single-origin coffee. All aspects of production are on site, from drying and roasting to grinding and packaging the final product.

Tours are offered daily from 11 AM to 4 PM, except for Sundays and Mondays. The tour experience includes a short intro to making coffee, a tour of all aspects of the farm from the fields to packaging, and a picnic lunch with locally grown veggies in the farm gardens (or formal ballroom, if the weather doesn’t cooperate). Oh, and there’s a coffee tasting after lunch, naturally. There’s also an on-site store with very reasonably priced bags of home-grown Kenyan coffee, starting at around $4.50.

The farm is about 20 minutes from Nairobi and reservations are required for tours, which cost $35 including lunch.

The River Cafe

Travelers who don’t have time to add an extra trip outside the city to their itineraries can still try some of the best Kenyan coffee and tea in the country if they head to The River Cafe . The beautiful cafe is inside Karura Forest — a large urban park that serves as a lovely alternative to the more crowded Nairobi National Park — and has both a restaurant and shop, so travelers can grab a coffee to go or pick up bags of beans to take home. It’s an excellent spot to relax after a morning hike, especially for travelers who prefer Kenyan coffee with a side of scenic views or laid-back birdwatching.
