Cruise from San Diego Cruise Port – the essential guide

View of downtown San Diego from Coronado bridge

Are you looking for a Pacific Coast cruise starting in Southern California?

Welcome to the sun-drenched coastal paradise of San Diego, where your cruise adventure begins.

This vibrant city perfectly blends natural beauty, cultural richness, and coastal charm.

In this guide, we’ll look at everything you need to know about starting a cruise from San Diego, from where to stay before your voyage to exciting ways to explore the city and nearby attractions .

Quick navigation

San Diego’s diverse neighborhoods – a visitor’s guide

San Diego’s geographical makeup offers a diverse range of neighborhoods, each with its own unique charm.

For first-time visitors, the city’s layout can be a bit bewildering, but fear not – we’ll simplify it for you. Most visitors choose to stay either downtown or close to a beach.

The heart of San Diego is downtown, where you’ll find the lively Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, and the Embarcedero.

The Gaslamp Quarter - The historic heart of San Diego

If you’re seeking coastal vibes, head to beachside neighborhoods like Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and Ocean Beach, known for their sandy shores and surf culture.

For a taste of art and culture, explore the trendy North Park and the Spanish-inspired architecture of Balboa Park.

Those looking for a quieter, upscale stay might opt for the coastal towns of La Jolla or Coronado Island.

So, while the city’s layout may initially seem complex, understanding these key neighborhoods will help you choose the perfect base for your San Diego adventure. We recommend cruise guests stay in Downtown San Diego. It’s a bustling area with plenty going on, full of restaurants and good transportation if you want to go further afield or visit other neighborhoods.

Also, it is close to the cruise port, so you will quickly and easily find your way there on embarkation day .

San Diego cruise port

San Deigo has two cruise ship terminals located close to one another along the Embarcedero. You will find plenty of dining and shopping options while waiting to check in for your cruise.

 • B-Street Pier & Cruise Ship Terminal
 • Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier

Check your cruise ticket to ensure you get to the correct terminal. Most major cruise lines will use the larger B-Street Pier & Cruise Ship Terminal.

How to get from San Diego International Airport (SAN) to your downtown hotel

Upon arriving at San Diego International Airport, getting to downtown San Diego is very straightforward.

The airport is located just a few kilometers from the city center, ensuring a smooth transition from your flight to your downtown destination. The journey time is around 10 to 15 minutes.

 • From the arrivals lounge, follow the signs for the transportation plaza. There are plenty of official taxis outside the airport.
 • Your hotel may be able to offer a shuttle bus pickup, usually for a fee. Check with them when you make your booking. Shuttle services depart from the Transportation Plazas across from Terminals 1 and 2. If you arrive at Terminal 1 , cross the Skybridge and take the escalators or the elevators to street level. From Terminal 2 , use the pedestrian crosswalk outside the Baggage Claim Area to access the Transportation Plaza.
 • The San Diego Flyer is a free shuttle bus between the airport and the Old Town Transit Center. However, we think this is located too far from Downtown to be convenient for visitors.

Where to Stay Before You Cruise from San Diego

Before setting sail, you’ll want to ensure a comfortable and convenient stay in San Diego. Here are five hotels located in downtown San Diego that have earned rave reviews:

Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel

 • Located just across the road from the start of the Gaslamp Quarter, right by the Convention Center
 • Luxurious amenities and dining options
 • Excellent breakfast
 • Bike rental available nearby
 • Great pool area and views over the bay to Coronado
 • Very close to the ferry terminal to go over to Coronado Island
 • If you aren’t already, become a Hiltons Honors Member for freebies such as cookies and bottled water when you check in
 • Great location in Gaslamp Quarter
 • Rooftop bar with panoramic marina views
 • Surrounded by restaurants and cafes
 • Friendly hotels with good front-desk service
 • Fantastic views from the sky lounge
 • Good restaurant serving excellent California wines
 • Eco-friendly hotel with stylish décor
 • Rooftop lounge with fire pits
 • Walking distance to the marina
 • Boutique hotel between Gaslamp district and Little Italy
 • Outdoor pool and kid’s club
 • Proximity to the San Diego Zoo

Pool at Hilton San Diego Bayfront

The best hotels close to San Diego cruise port

If you prefer to be even closer to the cruise port, consider these four hotels:

 • Located within walking distance of the cruise terminal
 • Stunning views of the harbor
 • Shuttle service to the airport and cruise terminal
 • Overlooking the Embarcadero
 • Spacious suites with kitchenettes
 • Complimentary breakfast and evening socials
 • 3-star Waterfront hotel close to the cruise port
 • Relaxing outdoor pool and spa
 • Easy access to the USS Midway Museum
 • Quaint courtyard and cozy rooms
 • Steps away from the cruise departure point

The San Diego Trolley

While we walked all over downtown, it is not for everyone. A great way to get around is using the San Diego Trolley. A single journey costs just $2.50 per person, and there are three lines to choose between blue, yellow, and green. Download a map of all the stops here .

3 Ways to see the best of San Diego before your cruise from San Diego Cruise Port

We always recommend arriving in your cruise departure city a few days before embarkation day. That way, you will not miss getting to your cruise ship on time.

Plus, you get to explore your departure city before your cruise begins. Here are our top tips on spending time in San Deigo before your cruise.

Day 1: Explore downtown San Diego

Start your journey by exploring downtown San Diego:

 • Morning: Visit the historic Gaslamp Quarter for breakfast and shopping.
 • Afternoon: Head to Balboa Park, home to museums, gardens, and the world-renowned San Diego Zoo.
 • The hop-on/hop-off trolley tour is well worth it and a great way to see the sights of San Diego easily.
 • Evening: Enjoy dinner at a waterfront restaurant in Seaport Village.

Little Italy, San Diego

Day 2: Discover Coronado – golden beaches and small-town charm

Take a day trip to Coronado Island:

 • Morning: Cross the iconic Coronado Bridge if you are driving, or hop on a ferry for the 15-minute ride from the San Diego Convention Center (close to the Gaslamp district at 5th Avenue – 600 Convention Way) or Broadway Pier (located downtown at 990 N. Harbor Drive), and visit the Hotel del Coronado. The ferry costs $16 per person for a round trip and takes you to the Coronado ferry landing.
 • Afternoon: Relax on Coronado Beach, often voted one of the best in the U.S.
 • Evening: Enjoy a seafood dinner at a local Coronado eatery.

Entrance to Hotel del Coronado, San Diego

Day 3: Coastal excursion – San Deigos at its best

Explore San Diego’s coastline:

 • Morning: Visit Mission Bay. One of the best-organized tours we joined was booked through Viator, their Whale Watching Tour from the marina at Mission Bay. The boat tour lasted about 3 hours, and best of all, we had a marine biologist on board to help us spot the whales and dolphins – a fantastic morning!
 • Afternoon: Stop at La Jolla Cove to watch seals and enjoy water sports.
 • Evening: Dine in La Jolla Village with ocean-view restaurants.

How to get from downtown San Diego to San Diego cruise port

Getting from downtown to the cruise port is a breeze, with several options available. Check these out before booking expensive bus transfers with your cruise company.

 • Taxi: The quickest and most convenient option, taking around 10 minutes and costing approximately $15-20.
 • Shuttle Service: Many hotels offer complimentary shuttle service to the cruise port for their guests. Ask when you make your hotel booking.
 • Public Transportation: The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) operates a 992 bus to the cruise port. The cost is budget-friendly, around $3 per person, but travel time may be longer. The stop’s name for the cruise ship terminal is N. Harbor Drive and 1140. The route goes all the way to the airport, too. Click for the route map and timetables.

Which cruise lines offer cruises from the Port of San Diego

San Diego’s cruise terminal hosts various cruise lines, each offering exciting itineraries to different destinations. Here are some of the cruise lines that sail from or into the San Diego cruise port:

 • Royal Caribbean Cruise Line
 • Princess Cruises
 • Celebrity Cruise Line
 • Holland America

Please note that cruise itineraries and ship availability vary by season. For the latest information, start your search for your perfect cruise from San Diego with our travel partner, CruiseDirect.

Exploring California beyond San Diego

If you’re extending your California adventure beyond San Diego, consider renting a car or hopping on a train and exploring these exciting destinations either after or before your cruise from San Diego.

 • Los Angeles: Explore Hollywood, visit Universal Studios, and relax on the beautiful beaches of Santa Monica and Venice.
 • Santa Barbara: Enjoy the picturesque wine country, stroll along State Street, and enjoy the stunning architecture.
 • Grand Canyon: Embark on an unforgettable road trip to witness one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders.
 • Palm Springs: Experience luxury resorts, desert landscapes, and outdoor activities in this desert oasis.

If you plan to continue your vacation by train, the historic Santa Fe train station is just a few blocks from the cruise terminal. From here, Amtrak trains will take you onwards to new destinations after your cruise.

With San Diego as your cruise embarkation point, you can explore as much or as little of Southern California as you like before you start your cruise. Whether you choose to immerse yourself in the city’s vibrant culture or bask in the coastal beauty, your cruise from San Diego promises to be a memorable experience.

Travel etiquette explained

A pair of guests were recently caught on CCTV stealing a horde of amenities from a hotel in Wales – from towels and a kettle to an electric fan. While most people don't tend to commit such grand heists when traveling, even those smaller pilferages (from bath towels to pens and paper) aren't the perfect crime: hotels can and will deduct what you’ve taken from your credit card, while airlines may fine you if you’ve walked off with something you weren’t supposed to.

Here we investigate the murky grey area of what you can and can't take from airplanes, hotels, or cruise ships. Click through the gallery to find out more...

Some of the items in a plane's free comfort kit are fair game. Complimentary socks on a plane are arguably better than any free snack box, and you can safely take them home knowing no one else’s smelly feet have been inside them. Our favorite? The free eye mask. It's often a little flimsy, but it does the job.

Who knows why you’d want to take a blanket that has been drooled on by countless other travelers, but a fair number of people do. In business class, some have even been known to take the duvet and/or the pillow.

Several airlines have now added announcements or leaflets, telling customers to leave theirs in their seat upon leaving the aircraft, while others collect the items from passengers before landing.

Unlike the minibar in hotels, the snack box on a plane is a glorious free-for-all. Maybe don’t tip the entire thing into your bag, but definitely hoard some of the chips and candy bars for later.

Firstly, why would you want to steal economy headphones? Secondly, in premium economy and above, you aren’t allowed to take them with you, sadly. For instance, Bang & Olufsen headphones are handed out in American Airlines business class – the flight attendants keep track and know exactly who’s used a pair, so you won't get away with it even if you did try to nab them.

Can’t take: headphones

These come in handy later on for takeaway meals or eating on the go while away on vacation. Also, if the flatware doesn't come in a sealed bag, any airline will assume that you’ve used them and likely bin them, even if you haven't.

They're definitely there for the taking.

They're definitely there for the taking.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

cruise trolley l

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

cruise trolley l

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such option offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

cruise trolley l

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

cruise trolley l

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!” wrote (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

cruise trolley l

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as this offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This website (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other website sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

cruise trolley l

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center: Hotel Ukraine and Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

cruise trolley l

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Video shows Carnival Freedom on fire, again. Two upcoming cruises were canceled. Here's what to know

The Carnival Freedom 's next two sailings have been canceled after the cruise ship, based out of Florida, caught fire . Again.

Carnival initially said there were no expected changes in its schedule but on Sunday afternoon announced cancellations of the Monday and Friday cruises out of Port Canaveral, which come during a busy spring break period.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," according to a statement issued by Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

This is the second time in less than two years this cruise ship's funnel has caught on fire and disrupted the schedule.

Carnival cruise fire: Carnival Freedom's next two cruises from Port Canaveral canceled after exhaust funnel fire

When did the Carnival Freedom catch on fire?

The fire broke out on the port side of the ship's exhaust funnel area at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Carnival said.

The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas. It was intended to call on the Carnival private island of Princess Cay but had rerouted toward Freeport due to adverse weather.

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," an earlier Carnival statement said. The fire was put out by 5:20 p.m., the cruise line said.

Why did the Carnival Freedom cruise ship catch fire?

Unknown at this time.

"Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated," Carnival said, "but cannot yet be confirmed."

Was anyone hurt in the Carnival Freedom fire?

The cruise line said there were no reports of passenger injuries, although two firefighting crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation and part of the funnel fell onto Deck 10, according to Carnival.

There were about 3.700 passengers aboard.

Which Carnival Freedom cruises have been canceled?

While initially the cruise line said the schedule would not be affected, further investigation found more damage than suspected. Scheduled cruises for Monday, March 25 and Friday, March 29 have been canceled.

Can I get a refund for my canceled Carnival Freedom cruise?

"We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation<' Carnival Cruises said in a statement. "We are providing all guests on both canceled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit, so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing with us, for their outstanding cooperation and support."

Where is Port Canaveral?

Port Canaveral, Florida is located on a barrier island between the Banana River and the Atlantic Ocean just north of Cape Canaveral. The port is 54 miles from Orlando and 75 miles from Daytona Beach.

What is the funnel on a cruise ship?

A cruise ship exhaust funnel works as a smokestack to lift emissions away from the deck and from passengers and crew. They're often called stacks.

The Carnival Freedom debuted a new stylized winged funnel in October last year after a 16-day dry-dock refurbishment in Cadiz, Spain. Carnival cruise funnels are referred to as the whale tail.

Has the Carnival Freedom cruise ship caught on fire before?

A fire broke out in the funnel area in May 2022 while it was docked in Grand Turk. Three scheduled sailings were canceled while the ship was repaired at a shipyard in Grand Bahama.

The ship was carrying about 2,500 passengers at the time and a crew of about 1,100, according to the cruise line. There were no injuries reported.

Which cruise ship caught fire?

The Carnival Freedom caught on fire on Saturday, March 23.

The 110,000-ton vessel made its inaugural sail in 2007. The Freedom, which has 13 decks, can hold up to 3,754 passengers and 1,150 crew members.

Has a Carnival cruise ship ever sank?

No. But one has been shipwrecked.

On Jan. 13, 2012, the Costa Concordia struck a reef and capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio. The ship, which was owned by a Carnival Corporation subsidiary, when the captain steered the 952-foot, 13-deck ship close to the shore to "impress the passengers" and tore a 160-foot gash in the port hull.

Captain Francesco Schettino was found guilty of manslaughter in 2015 and sentenced to 16 years in prison for the deaths of 32 passengers and crewmembers.

History, love is in the air in Boonsboro

Washington county, md., town embraces its past and romance book-loving visitors.

At the foot of South Mountain in Washington County, Md., the village of Boonsboro could be known for its proximity to the Appalachian Trail or its ties to major Civil War battles. But the town of 3,800 residents about 55 miles from D.C. might be most famous for its connection to Nora Roberts, the best-selling author of more than 200 romance novels.

The town’s motto, “Discover Our History. Savor The Romance.” captures this distinct mix of attractions that have made it a popular tourist destination. But Boonsboro’s access to nature, frequent town events, and location make it an inviting place to stay, residents say.

Literary lovers hope to catch a glance of Nora Roberts, “our local celebrity,” said Diana Hyvarinen, an employee of Turn The Page Bookstore, owned by Roberts’s husband, Bruce Wilder. “Of course I’ve met Nora,” Hyvarinen said with a smile.

“Bruce and I started our first business in Boonsboro around thirty years ago because there was no bookstore in southern Washington County,” said Roberts, who has lived in Keedysville, about three miles away, since 1972. “Our sons went to school in Boonsboro, making that an important connection, and we believed then, as we do now, that investing in Main Street could and would make a difference,” she said by email.

And it has. “Her fans come here a lot to stay at her Inn and then to cruise through the businesses,” Hyvarinen said. Since opening Turn The Page Bookstore in 1995, “we’ve found other wonderful old buildings that needed some love, and opened businesses we felt would enhance a lovely small town we have a deep and personal connection to and affection for,” Roberts said. Today, she owns Gifts Inn BoonsBoro, Fit In BoonsBoro and Inn BoonsBoro, popular for inspiring her Inn BoonsBoro Trilogy that published from 2011 to 2012.

Spice Cromie, a chef at Inn BoonsBoro, wasn’t looking for a job or a chance to see Roberts when she stumbled into Boonsboro to “resupply” during an Appalachian Trail hike four years ago. The town’s readiness to provide food, supplies and information to hikers made it a designated A.T. Community by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy last year.

Keen for a new adventure, Cromie felt called to stay in Boonsboro’s small-town environment for its comfort, kind people and easy accessibility to the A.T., within three miles, she said. She ended up with “a dream job” at the inn. She still visits the trail every day, running in preparation for ultramarathons like the JFK 50 Mile.

Dubbed “America's Oldest Ultramarathon,” the JFK 50 crosses through parts of the A.T. and draws droves of runners to Boonsboro every November. “There’s probably 3,000 people here,” Cromie said, and they unite in excitement on the starting line, marked by two commemorative bronze plaques, in front of Roberts’ Inn.

Boonsboro was founded in 1792 by George and William Boone, cousins of the well-known frontiersman Daniel Boone. The Boone brothers planned the town around what became National Road, the first federally funded highway, spanning from Maryland to Missouri, completed in the 1830s. This historic is now known as Alternate Route 40 and, in Boonsboro, Main Street. Every May, replica wagon trains pulled by horses and mules come to town during the National Pike Festival/National Road Festival, a 90-mile trek to honor the “Road That Made the Nation.”

Other events — from the Spring Jubilee to the Boonesborough Days Annual Crafts Festival to the Boonsboro Food Truck Festival — attract residents and tourists. “I always call it the busiest little, small town,” said Dana Healy, who moved from Hagerstown with her family of five in search of more land.

Healy owns Josie’s on Main, a boutique clothing and home goods store on Main Street and is a member of the town’s Economic Development Commission. “There’s always something going on. … and we never have a hard time trying to get people involved,” Healy said. “That’s a huge part of why I love Boonsboro.”

The town’s growth is seen in new businesses, including The Admiral restaurant and a long-awaited hardware store that opened in 2023.

But locals still boast of Boonsboro’s roots along Main Street, including the restored 1902 Trolley Station, National Road Museum and the Boonsborough Museum of History, which has artifacts from the nearby Civil War battlefields of South Mountain and Antietam. More than 500 buildings along Main Street and neighboring roads fall within Boonsboro’s Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Today, Boonsboro is “a very sought after area,” especially for its “central” location, said Roben Ryberg, a real estate agent with Samson Properties who raised her family in Boonsboro.

Access to urban amenities can be found in Frederick, 17 miles south, and Hagerstown, 11 miles north. Other attractions, including Antietam, C&O Canal Park and Washington Monument State Park, are within 10 miles.

For Ryberg, who’s spent more than 20 years in and around Boonsboro, one goal still rings true for residents, she said: “that the small-town heart of Boonsboro remains the small-town heart of Boonsboro.”

Living There: As of March 2, there were three active properties on the market, ranging from a five-bedroom, four-bathroom colonial for $459,900 to a four-bedroom, four-bathroom colonial for $545,000, Ryberg said. In the last 12 months, more than 40 properties have sold, from $164,850 to $575,000.

Schools: Boonsboro Elementary, Boonsboro Middle and Boonsboro High School

Transit: Residents have quick access to ALT 40, and Maryland Routes 34, 66, 67, and 68. Dulles International Airport is 50 miles away.

The family of a woman who died after spending 12 hours on a hospital trolley in a corridor have said the A&E department looked like “a scene from a war zone”.

Tamara Davis, 31, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital by car on the evening of Dec 10 2022 after complaining of breathing difficulties.

Her family said up to 30 patients were lying on trolleys in corridors with other sick people spread across the floor and seats.

Speaking outside a pre-inquest hearing into her death, her mother, Sue, said: “It was absolute carnage in there, a right scene. It was like something out of a war zone.

“There were 30 people on trolleys waiting for proper treatment and more people on the floor and seats. It was a total mess.”

The death will be the subject of a full inquest after Joanne Andrews, the area coroner for West Sussex, Brighton & Hove , said she had reason to suspect her death was “unnatural”.

The full inquest is expected to take place on June 28.

Brighton Town Hall was told that Davis’s partner, Raphael Ifil, had phoned 999 five times to try and get an emergency ambulance.

When they failed to come he got his brother to drive Davis the three miles to the hospital.

Her mother told the pre-inquest hearing: “Raf could not get an ambulance. He spent two hours trying to get one. Five times he called and couldn’t get one.”

Outside the hearing the family said that when Davis got there she began to suffer a fit so Mr Ifil picked her up and rushed her into A&E.

She was immediately sent through to a cubicle where she was given oxygen before being wheeled out on the trolley into the corridor where she waited for 10 hours.

Her younger sister, Miya, 25, who rushed to the hospital to be by her side, said staff just forgot about her sister.

‘We felt powerless’

She said: “They were meant to be caring for her, but they simply forgot about her and she was just left there curled up in a ball on the trolley in the corridor.

“We felt powerless. It was crazy. They gave her some antibiotics, but then they missed giving her another dose even though they wrote it on her notes.

“That was later crossed out – but there is no explanation why and no initials next to the crossed out entry.

“It felt like there were times when my sister was treated as a burden. Not a single nurse, doctor or porter even glanced to check if Tamara was in distress.”

Davis’s condition continued to worsen and she was eventually admitted to intensive care where she was put on a ventilator.

But her condition deteriorated and she died, three days later, on Dec 13 because of sepsis and multiple organ failure.

Her family said that Davis was “failed” by the hospital and died after “disgusting” treatment at the Royal Sussex.

‘Treatment was appalling’

They say her death could have been prevented had she received proper care in A&E.

Miya Davis said: “I’ve never felt my heartbreak like I did when I was told my sister wouldn’t recover.

“It’s like she was an afterthought. She was just left, almost forgotten.

“The treatment of my sister was appalling. Nobody came to check on her. Nobody even stopped to ask if we had everything we needed or if she was comfortable.

“Knowing that her death could have been prevented if she had received the care and attention she needed in A&E breaks my heart.”

Previously Dr Andy Heeps, chief operating officer at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We have previously spoken directly with Tamara’s family to express our condolences at what is clearly an incredibly tragic time for them, and I would also like to personally express my sympathies.

“I cannot publicly discuss Tamara’s care, but in general terms it is undoubtedly the case that our staff sometimes have to work under significant pressure, in difficult circumstances, but they will always do their very best to give care, compassion and dignity to their patients.”

Cruise operator Carnival lifts 2024 profit forecast on record demand

Cruise companies are experiencing all-time high booking rates as travelers switch to cheaper sea-borne experiences over expensive land-based alternatives such as booking hotels or flights, allowing operators to hike prices.

However, U.S.-listed shares of the company, which owns the Cunard and Holland America Line cruise lines, reversed course from premarket and were last down about 3%. They have risen about 94% in the last 12 months.

"This has been a fantastic start to the year," CEO Josh Weinstein said in a statement.

"We delivered another strong quarter that outperformed guidance on every measure, while concluding a monumental wave season that achieved all-time high booking volumes at considerably higher prices."

The company's first-quarter revenue rose to $5.41 billion, roughly in line with analysts' expectations.

Bookings for the rest of 2024 remain the best year on record with total customer deposits reaching a first-quarter all-time high of $7 billion, the company said.

Carnival has estimated an impact of up to $10 million on both adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income for the full year following the Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse on Tuesday.

The company said in January that strong demand trends during the year were expected to offset the impact it was seeing due to the re-routing of ships in the Red Sea region.

The cruise operator now expects adjusted profit per share of 98 cents in 2024, compared with its prior forecast of 93 cents. Analysts on average were expecting a profit of $1 per share, according to LSEG data.

Adjusted cruise costs, excluding fuel in constant currency, were up 7.3% in the first quarter, compared with the same period a year earlier.

Carnival posted an adjusted net loss per share of 14 cents, compared to analysts' expectations of 18 cents.

The company projected an adjusted loss per share of 3 cents in the second quarter, in line with expectations.

2024 NCAA Women's Tournament scores, highlights, results: USC, UConn and Notre Dame cruise into Sweet 16

The field is down to just 16 teams after play wrapped up on monday night.

The waning hours of the NCAA Women's Tournament's Round of 32 saw the sport's biggest star nearly fall, while the player who seems destined to follow her path to greatness led a resounding win.

Caitlin Clark and Iowa avoided a shocking upset in the senior's final game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Fighting through a physical West Virginia defense, the top-seeded Hawkeyes closed their second-round matchup on a 12-2 run over the final 2:03 to win 64-54, advancing them to a Sweet 16 game against No. 5 seed Colorado.

It wasn't the most efficient Clark shooting night, but it was a historic one. A pair of free throws to ice the game late gave Clark the single-season scoring record in women's Division I (1,111 points). Overall, Clark went 8-for-22 for a game-high 32 points, adding eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Hannah Stuelke was impactful down low with 12 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

While Clark and Co. sat on the verge of defeat, USC's victory was never in doubt. The top-seeded Trojans found an early lead over No. 8 seed Kansas and rolled to a 73-55 win. JuJu Watkins is continuing to blossom into a superstar in real time, and Monday she tallied 28 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Clarice Akunwafo provided incredible energy off the bench, as she pulled down nine rebounds, three steals and six blocks.

Earlier Monday, UConn and Notre Dame collected wins over Syracuse and Ole Miss, respectively. The Huskies avoided a late comeback push to win their second-round game, and Paige Bueckers led the way with 32 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Maddy Westbeld spearheaded the Fighting Irish's double-digit win with 20 points.

(4) Gonzaga 77, (5) Utah 66

Gonzaga took advantage of home court advantage and the Zags are now advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015. As the last team from a mid-major conference remaining, Gonzaga did not back down from the challenge of facing a tough Utah team that includes Alissa Pili, one of the top 20 scorers in the nation. Pili's college career has officially come to and end, but she can be proud of an effort that included 35 points and seven rebounds on Monday.

The Zags' offensive depth showed with four players scoring in double figures. Senior guard Kayleigh Truong led them all with 21 points. Senior forward Yvonne Ejim put up 17 points and 13 rebounds.

JuJu Watkins is playing like a veteran

The USC freshman averaged 25.5 points and eight rebounds in her first two NCAA Tournament games. In the first-round win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Watkins broke Cheryl Miller's USC single-season scoring record -- which the Hall of Famer set in 1986.

The last time the USC Trojans went to the Sweet 16 was 1994 with Cheryl Miller as the head coach. This is Lindsay Gottlieb's third season at the helm of the program, and she is already building something special in Los Angeles.

(1) USC 73, (8) Kansas 55

The Trojans are heading to their first Sweet 16 since 1994. Freshman star JuJu Watkins registered a game-high 28 points while also putting up 11 rebounds for her eight double-double of the season. Senior guard McKenzie Forbes was also a top contributor with 20 points.

The Jayhawks put up a good fight in the second and third quarters, but their efforts fell short against a tough USC program. It is the 15th time this season the Trojans allow fewer than 60 points. Senior center Taiyanna Jackson put up 10 points and an impressive 18 rebounds. Freshman S'Mya Nichols showed the future is bright for Kansas with 22 points.

Up next, USC will travel to Portland to take on the Baylor Bears.

USC started the fourth quarter outscoring the Jaykahwis 9-2, and now the Trojans hold a 62-48 advantage with under six minutes remaining. Freshman JuJu Watkins is leading USC with 21 points and needs just two more rebounds for a double-double.

(4) Gonzaga 41, (5) Utah 31 | Halftime

The Zags are the only team from a non-power six conference still playing in the NCAA Tournament, and so far they are representing mid-majors in an excellent way. As a team, they are shooting 57.7% from the field while spreading their offense. Six players are registering at least two points, with Kayle Truong leading the way with 12 points going 4-for-6 from the field. Utah is hanging around while star forward Alissa Pili leads its offense with 15 points going 5-for-6, including two 3-pointers.
