Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly

A new floor sign system at the Moscow metro's Pushkinskaya station. Source: Vladimir Pesnya / RIA Novosti

For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.

Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.

Student volunteers help tourists find their way in Moscow

However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.

One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.

Finding the right exit

At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.

The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.

According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.

Kudankulam

However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”

Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.

The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.

Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.

“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”

Teething problems

Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.

Pleasant encounters on the streets of Moscow

Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.

“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.

Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.

“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

As a shopping expert and fashion stylist, I love to prepare and organize for the season ahead. Right now as I stow away my sweaters, I’m searching for the perfect spring clothing essentials to round out my travel wardrobe. (Let's be real, I'm always mentally thinking of my next vacation and itching to get away.) Lucky me, it is the perfect time to shop since Amazon’s Big Spring Sale is on through March 25, marking clothes way down (we’re talking up to 50 percent off ).

From the perfect $26 travel pants to comfy Reebok shoes to carry-on weekender bags and easy matching sets , I was delighted to find cool and fashionable  Amazon Spring Sale deals that are totally on trend for spring 2024. The best part is that while these pieces are travel-friendly and will be packed in my suitcase with my trusted packing cubes , they also seamlessly fit into my everyday life in New York City for walks in Central Park or happy hour drinks outside with friends. Here are my top 15 spring travel wardrobe finds from Amazon, currently on sale.

Ugerlov Women's Two Piece Outfits Sweater Sets

Two-piece matching sets are a stylish and easy go-to look when traveling. I have been eyeing this neutral monotone outfit that looks like a $128 version for a few weeks now, so I plan on taking advantage of this Amazon spring deal. What drew me to this coordinated set is the comfortable but put-together look. The design of the ribbed knit top and tapered loose wide-leg pants feel a bit elevated. And this happy customer’s review stating, "This outfit is so flattering and perfect for traveling," really sealed the deal and made me click “add to cart.”

Reebok Women's Club C 85 Vintage Walking Shoe

Nothing says spring to me quite like a crisp, new pair of white sneakers. In particular, I like a low-top that has a retro look or feel, like these vintage-inspired Reebok sneakers. But it's not only about the look. Sneakers need to be comfortable so I can walk many steps (or miles) in them, whether here in New York City or abroad. This sneaker has a padded foam sock liner at the edge to help reduce rubbing and keep walking easy. This pair also has a thick rubber outsole that’s durable and responsive. The tennis shoe look complements dresses, cropped jeans, shorts, and midi skirts.

Bagsmart Carry on Weekender Overnight Bag

While this overnight bag doesn’t have a large discount, it already has a very desirable low price for the size, so I see it as a must-buy and a win-win to save a few more bucks. This weekender bag is spacious for two-night stays or a great second bag to put into the overhead compartment for a longer journey. Lightweight and soft nylon keeps it comfortable and back-friendly to carry with pockets for everything you need and even a snap to expand the bag to be more roomy. And for times when it is your second bag, there is a sleeve to slip on top of your luggage handle for easy transport.

Prettygarden Women's Off-Shoulder Romper Jumpsuit

Coming in at under $40, this comfy jumpsuit might just be the best fashion find in Amazon’s Big Spring Sale, and a total steal for travelers. How easy is this look? You just throw on the one-and-done outfit and go. It’s seriously versatile, too: wear it with sneakers and a jean jacket on the plane and dress it up for dinner when you land just with a change of strappy shoes and sparkly accessories. With more than 35,000 five-star ratings, it’s a shopper favorite, with one reviewer saying it was “ great for trave l” for their 13-hour flight. Sounds like you’re going to be wearing this one on repeat all spring.

G4Free Wide Leg Pants for Women Yoga Dress Pants

Another of my spring style goals is to swap my fitted leggings for a flowy wide-leg pant. I've been searching Amazon for an affordable pair to mix into my looks and landed on this one, now just $26 on sale. Fabric is important to me when it comes to pants, and this five-star review sold me: "One of the best things about these pants is the material. It is not too thick, so it has this great drape to it and puddles perfectly." Other positive comments highlighted how flattering and comfortable they are. I can see myself rocking these wide-leg pants on vacation and weekends at home with a tank or tee.

Crocs Women's Splash Strappy Sandals

If you haven't noticed, Crocs are everywhere with a fresh rep as a "cool shoe." Finally, people realized they offer excellent support, like this strappy sandal. With a cupped footbed with a 1.2-inch wedge platform heel and soft straps, this waterproof slide will be kind to your feet. Water-friendly material means you can swap out your well-worn flip-flops for this pair when heading to any resort vacation to wear poolside or to the beach.

Cupshe Women's Bikini Sets Two Piece Swimsuit

Speaking of the beach, a new swimsuit is at the top of my “to buy” list. I came across this flattering bikini set in the Amazon Big Spring Sale and it immediately caught my eye. The top has a twisted V-neckline with removable cups and adjustable straps for a custom fit. A high-waisted bottom is not only on trend but more comfortable when chasing waves or lounging poolside. Each piece is double-lined for extra coverage and a smooth fit. I have a feeling I will be coming back to buy this two-piece bathing suit in more colors.

Fjallraven Women's Kanken Hip Pack

Convertible bags are my go-to when traveling. For example, this super sporty hip bag from Fjallraven, known for its ultra-cool backpacks, can be worn across the body or as a belt bag. The switch-up helps prevent shoulder or back issues on long days walking around a new city or traveling to your destination. This bag is also super convenient with a two-way zip closure for easy access, a main compartment, and front and back zip pockets. Crafted in durable and water-resistant fabric, this bag has a look that will fit whether in a city, at a resort, or even hiking mountainside.

Hanes Women's Tri-blend French Terry Jogger with Pockets

Soft joggers are my go-to at home and when I travel, so I try to stock up on styles when I see them. This highly rated pair from Hanes caught my eye, not just because of the sale price, but because they have a slim, flattering silhouette that I always prefer over baggy styles. In cut and this beautiful juniper color, it’s reminiscent of the ever-popular Vuori jogger. Finishing off the sleek look is a cuff above the ankle, perfect for wearing with sneakers, flats, or sandals.

Levi's Women's Melanie Newport Bomber Jacket

Bomber jackets make the perfect spring travel layer. The quilted design provides some warmth, while the crop shape keeps it refined and stylish. This bomber jacket is designed with lots of zipper details, including two side pockets, giving it a sporty vibe. I tend to gravitate toward army green, a shade that is currently 35 percent off, for lightweight jackets since it's neutral and works with jeans but feels more springy and fresh than black. Of course, bombers work with any bottom, but I love to pair them over flowy spring dresses, too.

Beautife Womens Short Sleeve Shirt

Short-sleeve button-down shirts are one of the most versatile tops for travel. Pair with denim cut-offs to head to a beach, chino shorts for a sightseeing day, and a skirt or coated jeans for a fancy dinner out. This comfortable option is currently 35 percent off in my favorite color, black (some shades are 20 percent off). I appreciate that reviews mention it “ doesn’t wrinkle ,” which means it will pack well in my suitcase. The loose look will feel effortless, the perfect vacation vibe. Stylist note: size up if you want that oversized button-down look.

Prettygarden Women's Ditzy Midi Skirt Boho

My goal for spring is to up my skirt game, and this Pretty Garden style on sale might be my first addition. The flowy design and some of the floral prints feel super springy. I also appreciate that the high-low hem puts my shoes, whether sandals or sneakers, on full display. Crafted in lightweight fabric, I know it won't feel heavy on my legs in the heat, and the high-waist fit makes it easy to pair solid tanks and tees for easy travel dressing.

Lucky Brand Women's Basel Ankle Bootie

Putting away your snow boots for the winter is smart, but keep your booties out. Ankle-length boots are a 12-month-of-the-year shoe. This pair of brown booties can be worn with sundresses, flowy skirts, and shorts. Plus, they tap into the western-trend emerging thanks to Beyoncé's latest album. Right now, you can even score this pair for 50 percent off. Besides the look, the fit is easy with dual-side zip closures and a cushioned footbed. Trust me, these will be on heavy rotation all season. They’re also offered in extended widths.

Merokeety Women's Open Front Long Lantern Sleeve Cardigan

Cardigans are usually my top layer while on chilly flights. Not only do they make excellent outfit makers on vacation, but they're often hard to pack, especially when oversized and chunky, like this fashion-forward style. Wearing it on an airplane or in a car for a road trip helps keep my packing streamlined and effortless. The loose weave combined with the drop shoulder design and lantern sleeves lends a relaxed look and feel I love to embrace while on vacation. It's also machine washable for easy care while away and when doing laundry when I return home.

Naturalizer Flexy Flat

Ballet flats are having a moment, thank goodness, so I plan on stocking up on some fun springy colors and replacing my neutral go-tos with this black shoe. Not all flats are created equal. Some flats can be well, too flat, with no arch or outsole support. This is why when shopping, I turn to brands with a reputation for comfort like Naturalizer. Crafted in smooth leather, this ballerina flat has a soft, cushioned footbed with arch support and a 3/4-inch heel for added comfort. A classic shape with a round toe makes this versatile for day and night — the perfect addition to any travel wardrobe this spring.
