Views of Sognefjord, Norway

22 May 2025

Your cruise at a glance

Hand-crafted highlights.

Spend the spring Bank Holiday weekend admiring Norway’s remarkable landscapes. In just five nights, Borealis will take you on a journey along picturesque waterways to two wonderfully contrasting destinations. In the Norse city of Bergen, named after the surrounding mountains, there’s the chance to hike with a local atop Mount Fløyen, affording views of the city and fjordland. Flåm presents the opportunity to take a boat tour along the winding UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord or to travel up high into the mountains aboard the Flåm Railway. Enjoy our Scenic Discoveries programme as Borealis cruises Norway’s longest fjord, Sognefjord, and the size-restricted Fjærlandsfjord, courtesy of a diversion.

Need Some Help?

Take a look at our faqs, what do i pack for a cruise.

The handy checklist below has been created to assist in making sure you remember all the important things to pack for your cruise.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

What's the difference between Freedom and Saver fares?

On certain sailings we offer two types of cruise fares; Freedom and Saver Fares.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat.

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.

First Fred Olsen cruise departs from Newcastle for 2024 season

F red. Olsen became the first cruise operator to depart from Newcastle earlier this week, as holidaymakers set sail in search of the Northern Lights.

More than half a million passengers passed through the Port's International Passenger Terminal last year, with cruises also on offer from a range of companies including TUI, Saga, and Norwegian Cruises. However, it's Fred. Olsen who have been first out of the traps.

One of the company's smaller ships, the Balmoral, set sail on her first cruise of the season from Port of Tyne at North Shields, on a nine-night "In search of the Northern Lights cruise" on Friday, March 1. Other destinations throughout the season include Scandinavia, the Canary Islands, Portugal, Iceland and islands of the Mediterranean.

The Balmoral is set to be a regular visitor the Port of Tyne this year, though it is the only Fred. Olsen ship so far confirmed on the Port of Tyne's annual schedule. However, the larger Bolette, which docked in the port last year , is not set for a return to the North East this summer.

Clare Ward, director of product and customer service at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said: "We are delighted to have returned to Newcastle for another busy cruising schedule for 2024, and in particular, to be the first cruise line to sail from the Port of Tyne this year. Guests joining us can look forward to a host of specially-timed cruises on board our smaller-sized ship Balmoral where they can embrace the local way of life, seek out native wildlife and witness spectacular natural phenomena.

"Opportunities in our hand-crafted itineraries include the chance to see the Midnight Sun, visit the Norwegian Fjords when the waterfalls are at their strongest in the Norwegian fjords and seek out the Perseid Meteor Shower. Whether guests are sailing for the first, fifth or fifteenth time, there truly is a wonderful variety of cruises to suit everyone."

Jak Johnston, international passenger terminal manager at the Port of Tyne, said: "We are thrilled to welcome Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines back to Newcastle for another exciting season of cruising from the Port of Tyne. Our friendly team is eagerly anticipating the opportunity to provide exceptional service and ensure unforgettable experiences for all passengers.

"With our warm and renowned North East hospitality, guests can expect nothing short of a welcoming and memorable journey as they embark on their adventures with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines from Newcastle."

Other Fred. Olsen cruises leaving from Newcastle this year include the Norwegian Fjords in five nights, and a 19-night Mediterranean islands cruise. For more information on Fred. Olsen cruises leaving Newcastle this year, visit the website .
