2024 Texas Open leaderboard, scores: Akshay Bhatia leads after Round 1 with Rory McIlroy, Max Homa lurking

O ne of the biggest and brightest young stars in the game came to play in the Lone Star State. Akshay Bhatia was brilliant around TPC San Antonio on Thursday as he carded nine birdies and no bogeys to shoot a 9-under 63 and open up a three-stroke lead on the field.

Bhatia began his day on the more difficult front side, but it didn't seem to matter. Connecting on three birdies across his first four holes, the wiry left-hander was off and running. He added one more at the turn and went into the inward half where more of the same was in store.

Tap-in birdies on Nos. 14 and 17 sandwiched a long distance connection on the 15th. Bhatia went to the par-5 18th with a chance to tie the lowest round of his career, and he would do just that as one last tap-in birdie resulted in a back-nine 31 and a bogey-free 63.

Bhatia may have rolled in the most birdies on the day, but he was not the only man to go bogey-free. Rory McIlroy is within arm's reach after 18 holes thanks to a bogey-free 69.

"Doesn't matter to me," Bhatia said, referring to his lead. "I'm excited to go and sleep, it's been a long day, it's been very hot. I'm just trying to do the things that my mental coach and I have been talking about and I'm not trying to win the golf tournament today, but it's just nice having a nice day today."

Battling inconsistencies and the big number in the first three months of his season, McIlroy was steady in Round 1. Seeking the help of swing coach Butch Harmon, the four-time major champion got the big left miss out of his system, at least for one day, and helped him to keep his ball in between the bumpers.

There were a couple missed opportunities sprinkled in there -- namely the par-5 14th and par-5 18th -- but it was a clear step down the right path for a player who was searching for direction.

"The miss I was struggling with the last few weeks has been a left miss with the irons, and if anything, most of my misses today were to the right, so it was actually a pretty good thing," said McIlroy. "I'd much rather miss it to the right at the minute than miss it to the left. Yeah, I thought I played pretty well, hit some nice shots, played pretty consistently. I think it's the first round I've had without a bogey in quite a while. My game over the last couple months has been quite volatile, so to go out there and play a solid round of golf in pretty tricky conditions, pretty happy with it."

1. Akshay Bhatia (-9)

There is still a long way to go in this tournament, but with one spot remaining in the Masters field, it is Bhatia who has the inside track to earn the final invitation into the first major championship of the season. The one-time PGA Tour winner was flawless Thursday with nine birdies against zero dropped shots to open up a three-stroke lead on the field. Coming off back-to-back quality outings at the Valspar Championship and the Houston Open, Bhatia has rolled this into more of the same in San Antonio. If he is able to continue to do this across the next three days, Bhatia will be packing his bags for Augusta where long left handers like himself have thrived.

Other contenders

T2. Justin Lower, Brendon Todd (-6)

T4. Max Homa, Denny McCarthy, Austin Eckroat, Tyson Alexander (-4)

T8. Rory McIlroy, Ben Griffin, Hayden Springer, Adam Svensson Russell Henley, Matti Schmid, Garrick Higgo, Jorge Campillo (-3)

Homa fired one of the rounds of the day thanks to three birdies in his final four holes. Entering this week with a couple question marks surrounding his game (mainly the driver), Homa insisted playing through them rather than taking the week off to practice at home. After last year's Open, the six-time PGA Tour winner decided that he would be playing the week before each of the four major championships in lieu of taking the week off like usual. With only one major top 10 (last year's Open) in 17 starts, Homa needed to change something, and a good start in San Antonio could be a sign of things to come in Augusta.

"I think I when I'm at home [preparing for a major championship] I try to be a perfectionist, and I kind of hope that carries into the next week," said Homa. "I think this for myself might work better where I'm learning kind of more about my golf game and what shots feel good and what don't and leaning into that instead of trying to make them all exactly right."

Spieth be with you

Jordan Spieth's first few months of the PGA Tour season have been pretty odd, to say the least (shocker). With everything from a disqualification to a podium finish on his résumé, Spieth arrived in Texas hoping to find a string of consistency. That didn't happen in Round 1.

The 2021 champion offset five bogeys and a double bogey with four birdies and a hole-in-one for a ho-hum 1-over 73. Spieth arrived at the par-3 16th 4 over on his round and walked off the green at 2 over thanks to his fourth career ace on the PGA Tour. He parlayed this momentum into another birdie on the short par-4 17th to end his rollercoaster day on a high note.

"I had to take some off of a 7-iron, and so I lined up to hit like a 185 shot and hit a little fade with the wind that kind of was able to ride the slope then," said Spieth. "I hit it and I picked up the tee because I did what I wanted to do. And then as it landed and started to -- everyone started to stand up, it was the people right in line with it, so I thought maybe there's a chance, and then it went in."

2024 Texas Open updated odds, picks

Odds via Sportsline consensus

  • Akshay Bhatia: 3-1
  • Rory McIlroy: 7-1
  • Brendon Todd: 10-1
  • Max Homa: 11-1
  • Corey Conners: 19-1
  • Russell Henley: 22-1
  • Austin Eckroat: 25-1
  • CollinMorikawa: 25-1
  • Denny McCarthy: 25-1

With winds expected to continue, I think there are a bunch of guys at or around even par still right in the thick of it. The most intriguing option has to be Ludvig Åberg at 40-1. Among the betting favorites entering the week, the young Swede was among the leaders in the field in strokes gained ball striking Thursday but got nothing out of his short game en route to an even-par 72. The ball striking should remain the next three days and if the putter gets going, watch out.

PGA Tour rookie Nick Dunlap soars up Houston Open leaderboard; puts struggles behind him

Nick Dunlap, PGA Tour, Texas Children’s Houston Open

Since turning professional after his historic victory at The American Express , Nick Dunlap has struggled on the PGA Tour .

In his five events since, Dunlap has missed two cuts, finished dead last at Pebble Beach , and failed to contend at both the Cognizant Classic and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

But he did not struggle during the third round of the Texas Children’s Houston Open .

Dunlap carded a 7-under 63, one stroke off the course record matched by Tony Finau on Friday. In doing so, the former Alabama star soared up the leaderboard and into contention.

“All I tried to do today was play perfect with what I had, not necessarily like perfect golf but getting the easy ones up and down, not three-putting,” Dunlap said of his third round.

“You’re not going to make every putt, and you’re not going to hit every wedge close, but from where I was trying to play a perfect round of golf, I feel like I did that.”

The reigning U.S. Amateur champion made seven birdies to zero bogies, as he now sits at 8-under for the championship.

Nick Dunlap, PGA Tour, Texas Children’s Houston Open

Dunlap looked more comfortable out there. Perhaps that welcome sight can be attributed to playing practice rounds alongside Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns. He played with Scheffler once again on Tuesday at Memorial Park.

“I think [Scheffler] plays practice rounds the same way he plays tournament rounds,” Dunlap reasoned.

“He obviously doesn’t miss very many golf shots at all; he’s putting a lot better. He does everything well that you’re supposed to do and is also obviously very good under pressure.”

Undoubtedly, the 20-year-old has learned a lot from both Scheffler and Burns, who teamed up at the Ryder Cup this past fall. But the biggest thing Dunlap has learned thus far is to focus on the little things because the margin for error on the PGA Tour is razor-thin.

“They’re really good, they’re really good,” Dunlap said of his fellow PGA Tour professionals.

“I’ve got to do the little things better, whether that’s the little up-and-downs. I think out here everybody thinks that they hit the super hard shots well, and they sometimes do, but it’s the easy shots, and the lag putts that they don’t stress about, they hit ‘em to kick-in [range], and they move on, and that’s something that I’ve got to get better at.”

HOUSTON (AP) — Stephan Jaeger couldn’t have dreamed up a better scenario for his first PGA Tour victory. He played the final 36 holes with the best player in the world, and he won the Houston Open on Sunday to earn his first trip to the Masters.

“It feels amazing,” Jaeger said.

Scottie Scheffler couldn’t imagine a tougher way for his March winning streak to end — a clutch shot to 5 feet on the final hole, and a birdie putt he thought was good until he looked up and realized it wasn’t.

“I hit two or three really good shots into 18 to give myself a chance and I feel like I made the putt and I looked up and it was breaking off,” Scheffler said. “So a bit disappointing, but Stephan played great this week and he’s a deserving champion.”

Jaeger closed with nine straight pars, and that was just enough for a 3-under 67 to finally win in his 135th attempt on the PGA Tour.

Jaeger was preparing for a playoff after narrowly missing a 20-foot birdie putt that would have assured the victory. But then Scheffler, who gave himself three good looks down the stretch, saw his putt burn the left edge of the cup.

“I expected him to make it, and I’m not mad at him for missing it,” Jaeger said.

Scheffler was trying to become the first player in seven years to win three straight starts on the PGA Tour, and he was right there with a chance. Two shots behind, he had a 20-foot eagle putt on the par-5 16th and settled for birdie. He missed from 12 feet for birdie on the 17th, and stayed alive when Jaeger missed from 7 feet on the reachable par-4 17th.

His last chance was from 5 feet.

“It would be one thing if I pulled it or something like that,” Scheffler said. “I just misread it. I don’t know why I misread it, it’s part of the game. Maybe I could have hit it with some more speed, I felt like I hit a nice putt kind of how I wanted to, just didn’t go.”

Jaeger, a 34-year-old German who came to high school in Tennessee when he was 16, earned his first trip to the Masters with the victory. He also is in the remaining four $20 million signature events this season.

Alejandro Tosti had a chance to become the fourth PGA Tour rookie to win this early in the year. He was tied for the lead until chipping too strong on the 18th and missing the 18-foot par putt for a 68.

There was a five-way tie for the lead at the start — the largest on tour since 2009 — and eight players had at least a share of the lead at some point during the round.

Jaeger was always in the mix, taking the lead with an 8-foot birdie putt on the par-3 ninth hole at Memorial Park. That was his last birdie of the day, and no one could beat him.

“I was just tried to stay within myself,” Jaeger said. “Birdies eluded me on the back nine. But this golf course plays difficult, especially when you’re around the lead. I’m just super happy.”

Thomas Detry, David Skinns and Taylor Moore all made mistakes down the stretch.

Scheffler was one shot behind when he missed the green on the par-3 15th and failed to save par on an 8-foot putt, falling two shots behind with three to play. He got one back with his birdie on the downwind 16th, where Jaeger had to lay up and settle for par.

Scheffler and Jaeger both missed good birdie chances on the 17th, and Scheffler had one last chance on the 18th.

Jaeger finished at 12-under 268 and cracks the top 50 in the world ranking for the first time.

“I couldn’t have dreamed up a better week,” Jaeger said. “Playing Scottie last couple days, he’s been on a tear, so to kind of slay the dragon a little bit this week was amazing. He’s such a good dude, such a good player, I was just happy to play with him a couple days.”

Defending champion Tony Finau closed with two straight birdies for a 66 and joined Scheffler, Tosti, Detry and Moore in a tie for second.

This was the final week for players to move into the top 50 and earn a Masters invitation, and no one from outside the top 50 — Mackenzie Hughes and Tom Hoge had the best chances — did well enough to earn a spot.

Byeong Hun An is the only player from the top 50 added to the field for the Masters, which now includes Jaeger.

Prop Farm: Las Vegas bettors balancing Masters action amid search for Valero value

Golfbet News

Change Text Size

For many, it may feel like the calm before the storm. The Valero Texas Open will be the final test on TOUR before the season's first major championship. It's been roughly nine months since the last major was held and as usual, bettors have been chomping at the bit to get some action down on the Masters.

"I have to say, at this point, the Masters' handle has been quite good. A lot more than the lead-up to last year which is great to see," said Tristan Davis, senior manager at Mandalay Bay Race & Sportsbook. "We have notable Masters liabilities right now on Brooks Koepka and Wyndham Clark."

A trend that Davis pointed out in this column last week is bettors landing on some long shots who fared well the week before: "Once again a player who got close last week at big odds has had good support for this week in San Antonio," Davis explained. "This time it's David Skinns at +17500. Other than that, it has been a pretty quiet week so far. Punters maybe saving their cash for next week."

Thomas Gable, director of race and sports at The Borgata in New Jersey, isn't seeing a great deal of activity this week, either.

"Nothing real notable for the Valero other than in the outright market, where we are seeing a lot of long shots getting bet," said Gable. "As for the Masters, our biggest liability currently is Viktor Hovland at +1800. A little bit on Xander Schauffele and Max Homa, too."

For revered Las Vegas golf oddsmaker Jeff Sherman, there has been no calm before the major storm. "It's not slower this week," Sherman said. "In fact, more handle on the Valero Texas Open than last week already."

Maybe the major championship anticipation has more bettors getting involved ahead of schedule.

Golfbet Roundtable: Who to pick at the Valero Texas Open

"We took some sharp action this week on Matt Fitzpatrick and Billy Horschel to win in Texas," Sherman continued, who has been in the racket of golf odds-making for almost 30 years. "We do have some Masters liability already on Schauffele, Hideki Matsuyama and Tiger Woods."

The Valero Texas Open field features 30 players already qualified for next week's trip to Georgia. Those not yet qualified can punch their ticket with a win come Sunday. At Mandalay Bay, Davis is seeing this week's heavy load come in on big names who are already in the field next week.

"Ludvig Åberg is who the punters are honing in on this week," Davis said. "So far he is responsible for 15% of the total hold at +1200 with Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy a distant second and third."

Hall of Fame bookmaker Nick Bogdanovich is taking action on a player still trying to get into the field for the Masters. "They're playing Keith Mitchell to win it this week," Bogdanovich said before noting, "We have liability for next week already on Clark and Sam Burns."

It is a tricky handicap this week with what lies ahead. How do the players already qualified for Augusta treat this week? How will the players not already qualified handle the pressure of trying to earn their way in? Horschel, who has a great track record at TPC San Antonio and has been playing very well as of late, is trying to avoid missing the Masters for the first time since 2017. He is currently 87th in the world rankings. Bogdanovich is seeing bettors back the long-time TOUR veteran to continue his recent push and noted, "They're betting Horschel on the 'yes' to finish top-20 this week."

Ryan Moore has played in 10 Masters, dating back to 2003, but hasn't been back since 2018. He has four top-15 finishes at Augusta and has only missed the cut twice. The 41-year-old finished fifth two weeks ago at the Valspar Championship and was 31st last week in Houston. "Moore is getting action on the 'yes' to make the cut at the Valero," said Bogdanovich.

In the head-to-head matchup market this week, the sharps are getting involved at Mandalay Bay. "There have been some good sharp moves. Max Homa to beat Spieth from +120 to +110, Rickie Fowler to beat Victor Perez from +100 into -110, and Charley Hoffman to beat Jhonattan Vegas from +105 into -110," said Davis.

Bogdanovich pointed out three matchups he has seen take sharp action: "Spieth over Collin Morikawa, Byeong-Hun An over Harris English, and Akshay Bhatia over Maverick McNealy have taken respected money."

Next week's field for the Masters is currently at 88 players. One more could be added depending on this week's results at the Valero Texas Open. Winds anywhere from 10-20 mph or stronger are expected this week in San Antonio. Is that a "calm before the storm?" Here in the Prop Farm, we turn to a quote that seems fitting for what's in store.

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”
