Ecco La Cucina Culinary Tours In Italy

Piedmont Food and Wine Tour Culinary Vacation

Our in-depth learning experience will include the fine wines and culinary delights that make this region so famous. We’ll learn about – and taste – the famous wines of Barolo, Nebbiolo, Barbaresco and Dolcetto by touring the vineyards, meeting the wine makers and learning the nuances of the grapes grown and harvested there for hundreds of years. The cuisine of the region perfectly pairs with its wine and is rich in tradition with influences from the neighboring countries of France and Switzerland.  White truffles, excellent cheeses, succulent meats, stuffed pastas, hazelnuts and chocolate are some of the gastronomic delights from this region.

Included during the week we’ll visit historical towns – Alba for its truffles, Barolo and Barbaresco for its wines and Turin for its stunning Baroque architecture, chocolate, historical cafes and markets. Your education of this region will include a visit to an artisan cheese maker, a chocolate tour and visit to a hazelnut farm. We love to visit the local markets and will fit them during our week!

Accommodations

Our group will be staying at a lovely winery estate just outside of Alba where they produce Nebbiolo d’Alba.  The villa is a historical home overlooking the town of Alba and has comfortable, well furnished rooms.  Each double occupancy sleeping room has its own private bathroom. There are several living spaces to relax and soak in the beauty of the countryside and views of the town with its bell towers and rooftops.

Highlights of our Week

  • Wine education and tastings of the major wine regions of Piedmont including Barolo, Barbaresco, Dolcetto
  • Hands on cooking class followed by lunch paired with regional wines
  • Artisan food tours – cheese tour to learn the region’s specialties, a hazelnut farm and a chocolate tour
  • Guided walking tour of Turin
  • Visits to area hill top towns for markets and specialties
  • Breakfast each morning
  • All lunches and dinners including unlimited local wines
  • Our tours are small groups between 12 and 14 like minded people and are all inclusive – tours, classes, tastings, meals, transportation to our scheduled excursions – everything!

  • S203TVmichellem 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles We Found Truffles! We had a fantastic time, hunting truffles in a hazelnut orchard! Margherita is an excellent guide and translator! We learned so much about truffles and were thrilled every time the dog (Flora) started frantically digging! She found both black and white mushrooms, and we purchased a small white one, at the end of the hunt! Boots were provided and the hunt lasted for about 2 hours. I would highly recommend this! • misalee 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great experience in Alba It was truly an interesting experience to see truffle hunting in real time and learn about different types of truffles. Our guide and truffle hunter and his dog were great, we had such a good time. Our guide came to the meeting place (which was at the Alba cemetery parking lot for my group) and we followed the guide's car for about 10 minutes to the truffle hunting hill/area. I would definitely recommend it if you have time for a day trip to Alba. The town is very cute and there is free parking near the train station where you can park so you don't have to enter the ZTL zone. Read more Written November 8, 2023

Margherita was very helpful, suggesting we bring the Truffle hunt forward as the weather was to be bad on our day. The Truffle hunt was very informative and relaxing, getting to know and understand the way of life in the region. our Guide and dog found 4 Truffles. The Barolo tasting was equally as good if not better. We had such a selection of wines to taste and in such as relax setting. Would do the tour again if i was over there. just one point, the meeting point had us going to the wrong place in Alba, not sure if that was us or not. Read more Written May 4, 2023

  • G460XAsandrah 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Just perfect! :) The team of Albaway made it possible for me to do the tour even without a car AND even though no one else had booked for that day. And I can‘t thank them enough for that, since I really enjoyed it. I have to confess that this was my first ever wine tasting (I don’t drink wine that often, and I’m more into sweeter wine), and even if not being into wine too much, it was very interesting to listen to the different methods and how the different sorts of wine mature etc. Highly recommended! But even better was the truffle hunting. Being in nature, in those wonderful hazelnut and other forests, following the dog and its owner to find this special funghi, it was just so exciting and very informative! The truffle hunter and the guide Margherita are both so very knowledgeable and friendly and answered all questions with lots of patience! Do not miss the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!!! Thanks again to the Albaway team, the winery team and the lovely „truffle duo“ 😉 Read more Written October 5, 2020
  • krystinaboj 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Special tour of Barolo countryside If you're looking for a knowledgeable, beautiful experience in wine country, you've found it! Margherita gave me a ride in her car, and is true Piedmontese. She has facts about the whole region, as well as the history behind truffle hunting, viticulture, and the Piedmontese dialect. On the tour of the winery, she even jumped in to help out the other tour leader with facts. Watching Max and Kelly, you get a special window into the world of a hunter making his living, and the raising of a truffle hunting spaniel. I wasn't sure what to expect, but this tour was above and beyond. (Try the barolo chinato. For real.) Read more Written September 22, 2019
  • Quest777978 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent experience! My wife and I had a truly excellent experience all around. Communication in coordinating our truffle-hunting tour was very easy and our guide, Margherita, was very punctual, relaxed, and shared lots of interesting information during our tour. Although we were in the off-season for truffles, it was a lot of fun to venture into the hazelnut groves and wild areas with the hunter and his dog and we still found quite a few black truffles. The selection of the winery for wine tasting following could not have been better--perhaps the most authentic wine the area has to offer! YUM! Read more Written June 16, 2019

  • JenMJM 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles What a fun experience! We visited Alba by train from Torino and pre-booked the Truffle Hunting by Segway tour. Margherita met us promptly at 10:30 in Piazza Michele Ferrero (4 minute walk from the rail station). We couldn’t miss her as she arrived on a Segway in the piazza:) Her “office” is right off the square, and that’s where she and her friend instructed us on using the Segways. Once we finished our ~30 mins instruction, off we went to meet Massimiliano and his dog. Spring is black truffle time, and his dog found 2 while we were with him. Overall, great day! Would highly recommend as a unique tour option! Read more Written May 16, 2018

Girl's Gotta Drink - To Barolo and beyond!

Alba Italy Travel Guide: Truffles, Wine, & more!

alba, italy

If you are looking for Alba Italy tourist information, you’ve come to the right place! I’ve been living here since 2013 and started as a tourist, so I created Girl’s Gotta Drink to help make Piedmont and Barolo wine travel easier. I do Alba Italy tours and area travel planning.

The Piedmont region is a haven of gastronomic treasures, from wine to cheese to hazelnuts, and more. Alba is easily one of the best small towns in Piedmont Italy. Get to know the city and its offerings. I wrote this Alba Italy travel guide to help you navigate the city and learn a bit about it.

Alba Italy Tourist Information Quick Facts

  • Population: 32,000
  • Find it: Southwestern Piedmont, Northern Italy; 50 km  / 32 miles from Turin, to the right side of the Tanaro River.
  • Getting there: Alba, Italy is accessible by train , bus, and car; nearby airports include Torino Caselle, Milano Malpensa, Milano Linate, Milano Bergamo, Genova Cristofer Colombo.
  • Industries: Ferrero confectionery industry (maker of Nutella, Tic Tac, Ferrero Roche), Società San Paolo publishing house, Migrolio textiles, traditional agriculture, wine (290 wineries cultivate 700 hectares / 1,700 acres of land, producing an annual average of 61,200 hL of wine)
  • Top Attractions: Alba White Truffle Fair (October to November annually), Vinum Spring Wine Festival, Alba White Truffles, Barbaresco and Barolo wine tours and experiences

Alba Piazza Risorgimento

Alba Italy Travel Guide

By population, the city itself ranks below the top 10 Piedmont region cities. But for gastronomic and cultural, it is one of the best small towns in Piedmont Italy.

Sitting almost perfectly between the Piedmont wine region’s renowned Barolo and Barbaresco areas making it a prime home base for Alba Italy tours. Alba’s other acclaim comes from the fabled Alba white truffle and the annual fall festival of the same name.

Wines labeled Barolo and Barbaresco DOCG  (100% nebbiolo) are the most well-known in the Piedmont region. But they only make up about 3% of the region’s total wine production!

Click to read all about nebbiolo, what to do in alba italy.

With a larger size, the city is perfect for those looking to explore Barolo wine country as well as outlying regions like the Monferrato, the Alta Langa, the Roero, Turin, and more. Alba Italy tours include everything from Barolo wine tours to cooking classes, Turin day trips, truffle hunts, just to name a few!

The Alba White Truffle Fair

Fall is high season in Alba Italy – something that surprises many. The reason is the decadent Alba white truffle, which can be hunted starting in late September. Alba’s white truffle is another reason this is one of the best small towns in Piedmont Italy.

Festivities leading up to the annual Alba White Truffle Festival start in September, with the Festa del Vino, the Donkey Palio, and more. But, the market is the Alba White Truffle Festival’s biggest draw. It is the largest international truffle exhibition in the world – not too shabby for little old Alba. In addition to white and black truffles, you will find regional specialties like hazelnuts, cheese, salumi, wine, and more. The fair runs every weekend from the first week of October through late November.

Alba Pompeia: Explore the underground ancient city

Alba Pompeia predates Roman times with ruins visible all throughout its charming, walkable historic center. Some two meters below the city streets, visitors to  explore lost pieces of its 2000-year history on the city’s Underground Alba tour. The experience takes place at set times during the week, in English and Italian, with different ruins highlighted.

alba italy

  • Alba Wine Tours

The Barbaresco and Barolo wine connection makes Alba one of the best small towns in Piedmont Italy. Alba wine tours in the city itself include tastings at the local enotecas, wine shops, and wine bars. Hire an Alba wine tour guide (like Girl’s Gotta Drink!) for city-based wine education as well as touring in the vineyards and at the wineries themselves.

Alba wine tours also include nearby Roero where you taste the area’s top white of arneis, younger drinking nebbiolo wines like Roero Rosso and Riserva, and the crisp dessert frizzante wine of Birbert. Other Alba wine tours include the Monferrato, land of barbera and the delish frizzante of Moscato d’Asti.

Alba Wine Festivals

Each year, there are a series of annual wine festivals for sipping and swirling for Alba wine tours right in the city. Buy your souvenir wine glass and pouch, then taste away!

  • Alba’s Festa del Vino: Takes place the last weekend of September. All municipalities are on hand to showcase Langhe and Roero wines. Wine lovers and curiosity seekers meander from Piazza Risorgimento along Via Maestra to Piazza Michele Ferrero with a chance to taste some 700+ labels. Purchase a wine glass to taste and compare the wines on parade.
  • Vinum: Takes place late April / early May. A favorite area wine festival featuring wines from all over the Piedmont region with street food, a kid area, and more. Prices start at 10 euros for four tastings (includes a souvenir wine glass and a wine pouch).

Visit Alba: The home of Nutella

While best known for its place in the world’s wine trade, Alba also gets notoriety as the headquarters of Ferrero, the maker of Nutella. Public visits to the Ferrero plant, just outside the historic center, are strictly prohibited. Taste Nutella and other artisan hazelnut products all over town.

Insider Tip: Langhe Hazelnuts

Piedmont is the world’s largest producer of hazelnuts, with the Langhe responsible for a third of that production. Everyone loves Nutella but try the local gianduja spread. It’s an elegant, sweet chocolate cream with about 30 percent hazelnut paste, invented in Turin during Napoleon’s reign. Add an adventure to the Alta Langa for hazelnut exploration on your Alba Italy tours!

Shopping in Alba Italy

For the best shopping in Alba Italy, explore the quaint pedestrian street of via Maestra/via Vittorio Emanuele. It’s dotted with high-end and local shops as well as wine-ing and dining options in the city center, connecting the two main piazzas: Piazza Michele Ferrero (formerly Piazza Savona) and Piazza Risorgimento (often referred to by the locals as Piazza del Duomo).

Open-air Alba Market:

The two main market days are Thursday and Saturday from about 8:00 to 13:00. If you Visit Alba, you simply must check out the Saturday market!

  • Fruit and Veg Market: Located in Piazza Marconi, after via Cavour and past Piazza San Francesco on the right side, find the largest part of the market, under the covered canopy. Here are all the fruit and vegetable stands as well as local cheese, meats, and honey. Sprinkled outside the covered space are refrigerated traveling stalls, like rotisserie carts, fishmongers, fresh pasta, and more. Open Thursday and Saturday.
  • Mercato della Terra: Located in Piazza Pertinace, find about 20 producers from Alba and surrounding areas. These stands are producers following the Slow Food philosophy of proper, clean, and fair principles. The stands are stocked with cheese, wine, preserves, baked goods, honey, fresh fruits and vegetables, cold cuts, meats, hazelnuts, and more.

Practicals / Necessities:

Truffle Hunt & Barolo Wine Tasting

alba food tour

Tour from Alba with a Visit to a Barolo Winery

The second part of our Truffle Hunting and Barolo Wine Tasting continues with a scenic drive through the vineyards of the Langhe Hills.

The visit to the aging premises of a small winery is centered around the story of the family and the quality of the hillsides on which the Nebbiolo grapes are grown.

We partake in a premium wine tasting comparing different types of Barolo wine and appreciating different shades of flavors that Nebbiolo grapes can get.

MEETING PLACE

Meet in front of the train station in Alba (Piazza Trento e Trieste)

The pickup from your hotel can be arranged within a range of 10-15km from Alba. Please ask at the time of booking.

THINGS TO KNOW

Note about truffle hunting.

  • To make the truffle hunting experience more pleasant, Meet Piemonte can supply a few pairs of rubber boots, to be requested at the time of booking. Alternatively, trekking boots are suggested.
  • The season of the white truffle of Alba goes from the end of September to mid January. The summer black truffle can be found from mid April.

NOTE ABOUT PRIVATE TOURS

  • The tour of the wine cellar and the wine tasting may be shared with a few other guests of the winery
  • Occasionally, the truffle hunt may be shared with a few other guests (max 10 guests), in order to preserve the delicate environment where truffles grow, endangered by the recent climate changes.

Cactus Flower named Pueblo's top slopper in chamber's annual 2024 Slopper Tour

T he Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce crowned a new slopper champion Monday as Cactus Flower was voted the No. 1 slopper stop in Pueblo for the chamber's 2024 Slopper Tour.

Last year's winner , Gray's Coors Tavern, came in second place and B Street Cafe was voted third. Other top-10 finishers included Rock Ya Belly Food Truck in fourth place, Gold Dust Saloon in fifth, Riverside Bar & Grill in sixth, 3 Sisters Tavern in seventh, the Beer Barrel in eighth, Cafe Murillo in ninth, and the Sunset Inn in 10th place.

According to the restaurant's website, Cactus Flower's slopper features a half-pound ground beef patty grilled to medium and topped with Jack and cheddar cheese, served on a toasted bun and smothered in chile. The restaurant opened in 1990 and has been serving "delicious authentic Mexican meals, using the finest meats and freshest vegetables available."

"Thousands of votes were calculated and we were able to create a list of the top 10 Slopper Stops," said Cara Siegel, marketing and engagement coordinator for the chamber. "The Pueblo Slopper Tour is a self-guided foodie tour inspiring locals and tourists to try sloppers vetted by Puebloans."

The annual event is a way of promoting Pueblo green chiles grown by local farmers and the restaurants and food trucks that serve them. The winners will be featured on the 2024 Slopper Tour Map, which will be available through the official Pueblo Visitor Guide, the Visit Pueblo website and all affiliated Pueblo Chamber social media platforms.

Anyone who purchases a slopper from March 4 through March 8 can drop off an itemized receipt at the chamber office, 302 N. Santa Fe Ave., to enter a drawing for a chance to win a $250 cash prize.

Those who stop by the Cactus Flower, 4610 N. Elizabeth St., to try the winning slopper can do so between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. And be sure to take a look at the traveling gold chile trophy that signifies the restaurant's dominance in this year's slopper voting.
