Rock and roll hall of fame museum makes for an awesome ohio day trips activity.

If you are looking for an activity that is unique to Ohio, then consider heading to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum.

It is one of the most incredible things to do in Ohio because it is the only home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The museum is located in downtown Cleveland, right by Lake Erie.

Inside the massive 55,000 square foot building, you’ll find several levels of exhibits dedicated to the history of Rock and Roll.

The I.M. Pei-designed building also houses the offices of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and it’s where the artists who are inducted every year are decided on.

You’ll also find souvenir shops and a cafe, which means you can easily spend the entire day exploring this super-unique museum in Ohio.

Explore The Ohio Caverns

The Ohio Caverns are definitely one of the best hidden gems of the Midwest .

Visitors have been flocking to these cool underground tunnels almost since they were first discovered between 1897 and 1925.

Depending on the time of the year, the caverns are open for tours at different times.

Visit Chateau Laroche

When you think of Ohio, castles probably don’t come to mind.

But they should!

Ohio is home to several castles , and one of those is Chateau Laroche.

Chateau Laroche is often called Loveland Castle by locals, simply because you can find it in the town of Loveland, Ohio.

The Chateau is a full-size replica of a European castle and features a mishmash of different architectural styles from different European countries.

You will see influences from English, French, and German architectural styles as well as four turrets, each of which has a different style.

The castle is now a museum, where you can tour the inside as well as the grounds, and learn about its eccentric builder.

Visit The Pro Football Hall Of Fame In Canton

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton Ohio.

Inside, you’ll find tons of exhibits all relating to American football.

It’s no surprise that football fans travel from all over the world to spend the day exploring this really unique museum experience.

There are interactive exhibits and fascinating tours that teach you all about the history of football and some of its most iconic players.

You will even find exhibits dedicated to each Pro Football team, so you will be able to admire memorabilia from your favorite team.

Step Into History At The National Underground Rail Road Freedom Center

You can find the National Underground Rail Road Freedom Center in Cincinnati.

It is specifically located along the banks of the Ohio River because the Ohio River used to be a natural divider between ‘free’ and ‘slave’ states.

The ‘free’ states were those above the Ohio River and the ‘slave’ states were those below the Ohio River.

So it was naturally one of the best crossing points for enslaved peoples looking to escape.

Now you can learn about the history of the Underground Rail Road in Ohio at the center.

The center highlights stories of those who helped enslaved peoples escape to Ohio as well as the stories of those who managed to find freedom in Ohio.

It is an incredibly moving museum.

While we believe that slavery ended in America with the end of the Civil War, that is sadly not the case.

Slavery continues to occur every day in the form of human trafficking, even in America.

Alongside the exhibits about the Underground Rail Road, you’ll also find exhibits that highlight and inform visitors about the modern-day slave trade.

Admire The Kelleys Island Glacial Grooves

The Kelleys Island Glacial Grooves are an Ohio natural wonder on Kelleys Island.

It is an island just off the coast of Lake Erie near Sandusky.

Kelleys Island is super tiny and you can only reach it via ferry.

So keep that in mind when you are planning this Ohio day trip adventure.

To get around the island you will need to walk.

There are no cars permitted, but at only four miles by two miles, that probably will not be a problem.

You can see a few things on the tiny island, but the most popular is the glacial grooves.

The grooves were created by a glacier slowly sliding on the landscape and carving the grooves over time.

Put-In-Bay For One Of The Most Romantic Ohio Day Trips

The small town of Put-in-Bay is a great spot for a romantic getaway or even just a romantic day trip.

While you explore the park you’ll find gorgeous waterfalls , scenic hiking trails , and unique rock formations dotted throughout the lush forest landscape.

The area around the state park is also full of fun activities. There are shops, restaurants, and historic museums.

If you are looking to escape to the great outdoors for one of your next day trips in Ohio, then you can’t go wrong with a day spent at Hocking Hills State Park.

Explore Ashtabula Beaches And Parks

Ashtabula is an adorable small town, probably best known for its wonderful Lakeshore Park.

The Lakeshore Park is located on the shores of Lake Erie and is about 54 acres of trails, sandy shores, and park area.

What makes the park and the beaches of Ashtabula so popular are actually a few different things.

The beaches are very pretty, and Lakeshore Park is full of amenities.

There are grassy areas where you can picnic or relax and play some horseshoe, a playground for kids, volleyball courts, pavilions, and even a public boat dock.

You could easily spend an entire day in Ashtabula.

Westerville Is One Of The Cutest Small Towns In Ohio

If you are looking to explore one of the cutest small towns in Ohio , head to Westerville.

For those near Columbus, Westerville is just a short 20-minute drive away.

In the small town, you will find a great main street with unique shops and restaurants.

You can stroll through the Sharon Woods Metro Park or the Inniswood Metro Garden if you want to enjoy some beautiful small-town landscapes.

For those that are interested in history, Westerville is a cool place to visit.

A fun fact about the town is that it was called ‘The Dry Capital of the World’ because it continued the prohibition of alcohol long after the US rolled back prohibition laws.

Sometimes the avid travelers among us forget to look around and see the joy of exploring closer to home. As (fairly) new Ohioans, we’ve been amazed at just how many interesting places surround us! We’ve made it a project to go on – and document for you – the best day trips from Columbus, Ohio.

This quest has truly been a delight so far, and we have even more planned for the coming months and years. I’ll keep adding them as we go so that I make sure to give you the real deal on whether or not these places are worth your precious weekend days.

It’s also been surprising to discuss some of these Columbus day trips with local friends and colleagues who have lived here for decades without knowing what’s in their own backyards – hopefully you’ll find some unexpected gems. Some of these are awesome family day trips from Columbus Ohio, while some of these day trips in Ohio are better for couples or kid-free adults. Have a read and find something interesting!

Best Day Trips From Columbus OH Within 1 Hour

Hocking hills.

Distance from Columbus to Hocking Hills: 55 miles/55 minutes

Hocking Hills State Park is surely one of the most popular day trips in Ohio. In fact, I first heard about it from my random seatmate on our relocation flight!

This is a great place for hiking in Ohio. The most popular trails are Old Man’s Cave (about 1.5 miles and rated moderate) and Ash Cave (about 0.5 miles whether you make a loop around the rim or go through the middle of the gorge and back out, though the gorge trail is paved for accessibility), which are great for preschoolers through adults. If you visit during the rainy season, you’ll be wowed by the waterfalls on these trails. We went in mid-October and unfortunately it’s was almost totally dry and didn’t yet have fall foliage.

For a more rugged hiking experience, try nearby Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve. The rim trail there sits atop massive sandstone cliffs and offers at 2.5 mile loop trail. There are places where this trail is narrow, rocky and slippery – use caution! Many parents opt not to do this with their kids until they’re older.

Distance from Columbus to Dayton: 75 miles/1 hour

If Hocking Hills is the first day trip from Columbus you take, a day trip to Dayton should be your second. There are too many things to do in Dayton to detail in this roundup! I’ve actually been visiting since my own childhood, but we make several trips each year now and keep finding new, unique activities.

Of course Dayton is best known as the home of the National Museum of the US Air Force . It’s truly impressive! There are great displays covering the history of aviation and space travel as well as Ohio’s role in both. You can’t beat the cool factor of the Museum’s collection of retired Air Force One planes that you can walk through . See how leaders from Roosevelt to Clinton rode in style! In recent years they’ve added a lot more hands-on exhibits and simulators for kids, so visitors of all ages will be engaged. Did I mention that admission is FREE ?

If you’re visiting when the weather is nice, Dayton also has plenty of lovely gardens to visit. We especially love Aullwood Gardens Metro Park and look forward to visiting Wegerzyn Gardens and Cox Arboretum – all three of those are totally FREE as well since they’re part of the fantastic Five Rivers MetroParks system.

One of our favorite hidden gems in Dayton is Sunwatch Indian Village . This is an active archeological site, and there’s also great recreation of the Fort Ancient village that stood on the site 800 years ago. You’ll enter through the small but excellent museum that houses both artifacts as well as representations of the Fort Ancient culture. We visited on a gorgeous Saturday and were the only people there, so this is a great place to avoid crowds – but please tell your friends to visit too so that we can support this excellent site.

Springfield

Distance from Columbus to Springfield: 50 miles/50 minutes

Springfield, Ohio is a new one for us but I’m so glad we visited! This is a must-do Ohio day trip for architecture fans thanks to the presence of Frank Lloyd Wright’s incredible Westcott House . It’s the only Prairie house he built in Ohio and sadly it fell into disrepair in the second half of the 20th century. Thankfully in recent years it was lovingly restored by the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy and it opened to the public for tours in 2005 – that’s part of the reason many Ohioans don’t know about it! Weekend tours can and do sell out, so get your tickets a day or two in advance if you’re particular about timing.

While you’re there, swing by the cute Hartman Rock Garden . It’s free and located in someone’s backyard, but don’t let either of those stop you. Ben Hartman’s hand-made creations are absolutely incredible and are still going strong a century later.

While you’re in Springfield, be sure to grab lunch at Guerra’s Krazy Tacos. The Texas-born founder is from a Mexican family and makes high-quality, budget-friendly staples along with creative takes, all served up surrounded by fun decor.

Yellow Springs

Distance from Columbus to Yellow Springs: 55 miles/50 minutes

Looking for a great spring or fall day trip from Columbus? Get to adorable Yellow Springs in under an hour!

The biggest draw is Glen Helen Nature Preserve , which offers a lovely Inman Trail loop hike through the woods that takes you to the yellow spring that gave the town its name. Just up the street in town, grab a slice of pizza from Benito’s – some people claim it serves up the best pizza in Ohio.

If you’re on a day trip with kids, be sure to stop at Young’s Jersey Dairy on your way back to Columbus. This dairy farm has been in the family for over 150 years, but it’s evolved a lot in that time! Today they serve up delicious homemade ice cream and more in their shop. If you want a longer visit, spend time visiting the farm animals, testing your skills at batting cages and mini golf or going down the “fast slide”.

Licking County

Distance from Columbus to Newark: 50 miles/1 hour

Neighboring Licking County is one of the most overlooked places to visit near Columbus, Ohio. There are plenty of options for visitors of all types, all year long! I’ve grouped its towns together here because they’re all close enough that you can mix-and-match for a full day of fun.

We actually opted to do a little winter staycation at the excellent Cherry Valley Hotel and I can’t recommend it enough! Hotel itself is lovely and it’s in a nice central location. This was the prefect place to try out igloo dining when we were looking for fun things to do in Columbus in winter .

The town of Newark is lovely for a walk on a nice day – don’t miss the gorgeous Licking County courthouse at its center. You’ll want to snag a table at Elliot’s Woodfired Pizza , but be prepared for a little wait if there’s a game. Hop across the street on nice days for dessert at Drip Dreams Ice Cream .

For families, flash your COSI card for free admission to The Works . This museum is small but excellent, with high-quality hands-on experiences everywhere you look. The lower level is focused on science and technology, plus a glass studio that has both gaffer demonstrations and optional workshops on Saturdays for older visitors. The upper level is focused on Ohio’s history and development and includes a mock village to explore. We stayed for three hours and had to drag the kids out!

The adorable New England-esque Village of Granville was established in 1805 and its main street, Broadway, shows that age in all the right ways. It’s perfect for a stroll and lunch, or you can even catch a show at the Eisner Center for the Performing Arts at Denison University. Nearby Lynd Fruit Farm (on the way from Columbus) always has something going on to extend your time in the area.

Buckeye Lake

Want a taste of “lake life” close to home? Pop over to Buckeye Lake and spend an afternoon walking on the lovely path next to the shore. You can also rent a kayak or boat, or take a pontoon tour if you don’t feel comfortable navigating on your own. It’s a great summer day trip from Columbus OH!

The Dawes Arboretum

The Dawes Arboretum is just outside of Newark and spans nearly 2000 acres. It’s massive! This hilly property has plenty of variety to warrant repeat visits, including a peaceful Japanese garden, ample hiking trails, periodic sculpture installations, an observation tower and more. You can even tour the property’s historic home during the warmer months.

Ticket prices are very reasonable at $10 per adult and $5 per child, but Dawes also accepts reciprocal membership from other AHS gardens like Franklin Park Conservatory.

This is definitely one of the most fun day trips in Ohio for families, especially in late summer and early fall. Kick off your day with fruit picking at Branstool Orchard or Legend Hills Orchard . Both typically open in July for peaches and then continue for apples through mid-October. Branstool also has one of the nicest pumpkin patches near Columbus Ohio in fall! Legend Hills has a market on-site and is open year-round.

Once you’ve picked your fill, drive 5 minutes around the corner to Velvet Ice Cream at Ye Old Mill. This old-school scoop shop also has a fun little museum built into the seating area, but after exploring families will want to head out to the large grassy meadow in front. There are tables to sit at or you can bring picnic blanket – I keep this one in my trunk at all times. It’s a lovely place to spend an afternoon tossing a frisbee, playing on the playground or watching the swans in the pond.

Schnormeier Gardens

Distance from Columbus to Schnormeier Gardens: 50 miles/1 hour

Garden lovers absolutely must visit Gambier’s Schnormeier Gardens at least once in their lives. This spacious private garden is open annually on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in June. Visitors will fall in love with the in unique and diverse landscapes, from the Chinese Cup Garden to the shady Woodland Garden.

While the Gardens used to be free and drop-in, there’s now a $50 per vehicle charge. Feel free to load up the van! Do make sure to book your tickets in advance as it sells out nearly every year – particularly toward the end of June.

Columbus Ohio Day Trips Within 1.5 Hours

Distance from Columbus to Mansfield: 65 miles/1 hour 15 minutes

I can’t believe it took us nearly four years living in Columbus to get up to Richland County! There are so many things to do in Mansfield OH that we’ve recently gone up a few times – and we still have more to see. You can easily enjoy two of these sites in a single day if you get an early start, as they’re all fairly close together.

The Ohio State Reformatory aka “Shawshank Tour”

When we were recently looking for a couples day trip from Columbus, a trip up to The Ohio State Reformatory was at the top of our list. This defunct prison was the primary filming location for 1994’s “The Shawshank Redemption”, based on Stephen King’s novella “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” – I read it as part of his Different Seasons collection and recommend that you do as well.

Though both the story and movie are set in Maine (like most of King’s work), Mansfield and the surrounding area of Richland County are reasonable stand-ins. During our tour of The Ohio State Reformatory, our guide did an excellent job sharing the history of the Reformatory and and its eventual decline while also weaving in elements of the movie.

While there’s an option to visit the Reformatory on a self-guided tour, I strongly recommend reserving in advance for a guided tour of “the Shawshank prison”. We learned so much and our guide was very engaging!

Pro tip: Because of the understandable lack of climate control in the cell block, dress for temperature extremes if you visit in Winter or Summer.

Kingwood Center Gardens

Kingwood Center Gardens is a lovely place to visit if you enjoy the more refined things in life. This 47 acre estate has beautifully manicured ground that are perfect for a Spring visit. You can also tour the stunning mansion on the property, Kingwood Hall, which still has many of the original furnishings from a century ago. Keep your eyes peeled for the peacocks who live on-site!

Note for Franklin Park Conservatory and other local AHS members: Your membership is not value for reciprocal admission to Kingwood Center Gardens. I believe this restriction also applies to members of The Dawes Arboreturm and Hywet Hall.

Ohio Bird Sanctuary

If you’re looking for a great family day trip from Columbus, OH be sure to put the Ohio Bird Sanctuary on your list. This rescue and rehabilitation facility does great work both with animals and with their educational programs

In my experience it’s a great place for budding naturalists thanks to the diverse species in residence. It started as a raptor rescue so you’ll see plenty of hawks, falcons and even bald eagles! There are also several species of owls as well as a free fly aviary with more docile birds that have been turned over. Our kids loved hand-feeding the blue jays.

The OBS is open year-round Sunday through Tuesday so it’s a nice Columbus day trip option all year long, though you’ll find bigger crowds as the weather gets warm. But please learn from my mistake: stay off the Wood Duck Trail if it’s been rainy!

Downtown Mansfield

While Mansfield is a small town, it’s worth a stop whether you’re an adult or a kid.

For adults, there are several noteworthy on the “Shawshank trail” located in downtown. You’ll find them clearly advertised with signs, but some popular ones include the Bissman Building (the Brewer Hotel in the movie) and Mansfield Antiques Gallery (which played the role of the pawn shop). They’re fun photo ops for movie lovers!

Though it was closed due to damage, Richland Carrousel Park is back open to entertain young visitors. The carousel looks old but it was actually built in 1991 as the first new hand-carved carousel in the US in almost a century.

For a fun throwback, stop in Operation Fandom & Blackbird Records. It’s full of Gen X through Millennial favorites like Star Wars collectibles, rare Pokémon packs, Garbage Pail Kids… and of course vinyl.

Downtown Mansfield even offers two delicious bakeries: Blackbird Bakery and Buckeye Bakery . I’ll let you sample both and decide which one you like best!

Malabar Farm State Park

We haven’t made it yet but one of the most popular things to do near Mansfield Ohio is visit Malabar Farm State Park . The site offers plenty to explore for lovers of both nature and history.

In summer and fall you can tour the farm by wagon, golf cart or hay ride. There are also guided tours of the Big House for adults in April through December. If you’re more interested in exploring nature, there are plenty of hiking trails or you can drive up to the top of Mt. Jeez for great views of Pleasant Valley.

Distance from Columbus to Athens: 75 miles/1 hour 15 minutes

For another wonderful spring day trip from Columbus head down to Athens, home of Ohio University. Just outside of the Convocation Center you can enjoy one of the best places to see cherry blossoms in Ohio! There are more than 200 flowering cherry trees here. It’s not Japan or Washington DC , but it’s still absolutely lovely for a picnic.

You’ll want to follow the updates to make sure you choose a great day to visit, but usually generally late March to mid-April is ideal. While you’re there, be sure to take a walk around the charming historic part of campus as well as the adjacent town.

Distance from Columbus to The Wilds: 75 miles/1 hour 15 minutes

Want to travel overseas and see exotic animals? Me too, but sometimes that isn’t in the cards.

Thankfully right here in Ohio you can see several dozen endangered and threatened species at The Wilds, one of the world’s largest conservation parks at almost 10,000 acres. Witness everything from these southern white rhinos to cheetahs to batengs and more.

This is a wonderful Ohio day trip for the whole family, as the general tour is conducted in an open-air school bus. It feels like an adventure but requires minimal walking so it’s fine for babies through seniors.

We loved our visit to The Wilds so much that we became members – the Family Plus membership covered all six of who visited and parking for less than the cost of a single visit. We look forward to visiting again for one of the specialty tours, like the horseback sunset safari.

The season for The Wilds open-air safari is somewhat limited, running from early May into October. The beginning and end are ideal to avoid the hottest times, but I don’t recommend visiting on a day when rain is in the forecast. We all had fun but wound up soaked and muddy even though we were covered on the bus.

Day Trips from Columbus Ohio Within ~2 Hours

How far you can go on a day trip is like asking the length of a piece of string. There’s no single answer.

But I can tell you that I’ve seen some downright silly far suggestions for day trips from Columbus, Ohio. Barring a special event, there’s not much that makes it sensible to take a road trip that requires driving 3+ hours each way in a single day.

However, there are a few options that are about two hours from Columbus and special enough to warrant visiting even if you can’t stay overnight. Prepare for a long day, but know that it’ll be worthwhile and you’ll have a great time on these fun day trips in Ohio!

Cincinnati Zoo

Distance from Columbus to Cincinnati Zoo: 110 miles/1 hour 45 minutes

While I’d normally advocate spending a weekend in Cincinnati , if you can’t make that happen it’s still pretty easy to pop down for the day to see the excellent Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden . The Cincy Zoo isn’t as big as the Columbus Zoo, but it offers a different vibe and is home to some animal celebrities like Fiona the baby hippo. The Cincinnati Zoo also has lots of keeper chats and animal encounters included with the price of admission – be sure to check the daily schedule – don’t miss Wings of Wonder on a summer visit.

After the zoo, you can stop at Findlay Market for an early dinner. This is one of the best one tank trips from Columbus for families!

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Distance from Columbus to Cuyahoga Valley National Park: 130 miles/2 hours

We’re lucky to have one of America’s 63 National Parks right here in Ohio! It’s preserved to showcase both the area’s natural beauty and the unique historical significance of the Ohio & Erie Canal. While there’s plenty to fill an entire weekend with things to do at Cuyahoga Valley National Park, you can get a taste on a day trip as well. Even better, admission to the Park is free!

The crown jewel of the Park is Brandywine Falls. You can take the gorge trail if you want some good exercise, but the best view of the falls is down the stairs (many of them) from the parking lot in the lower viewing area; the upper viewing area isn’t quite as dramatic but thankfully it offers an accessible option. Keep in mind that the parking lot at Brandywine Falls can get very crowded on beautiful days in the summer, but the falls are most impressive right after a big rain. We had no trouble parking here on an overcast day in April!

Be sure to spend some time hiking around The Ledges, which is a moderate 2 mile loop. The area’s geology is on full display and kids will love running up and down some of the massive boulders. I do recommend waterproof hiking shoes or boots with good tread for the trails in CVNP, as it’s a moist area so there are plenty of spots that are slick with either mud or moss – my kids both wore these boots , while I prefer these low-tops .

If you visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park in the summer, build time into your schedule to watch demonstrations of the canal’s lock system by historical reenactors, enjoy a free concert and take a ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway.

For snacks to refuel during the day, you can snag some Cleveland-made Mitchell’s ice cream cups at Boston Store (adjacent to the visitors center) or stop at The Crooked Kettle Popcorn Company in Peninsula.

If you’ve ended your day at the Canal Exploration Center, it’s easy to pop up to adorable Chagrin Falls for strolling and dinner. We had a great meal at Ponyboys just outside of town, or for fancy dinner with a view you can wipe the mud off and visit 17 River Grille overlooking the lovely Chagrin Falls waterfall.

Distance from Columbus to Vermillion: 120 miles/2 hour 15 minutes

Can’t make it all the way to the ocean or the Gulf of Mexico? One of the best summer day trips in Ohio is to the Lake Erie beach in Vermillion. Main Street Beach offers just the right amount of sand and water to get your fix. At just over 2 hours, it’s the closest beach to Columbus Ohio.

The drive is at the edge of day tripping for most people, but totally manageable for a day at the beach. You can leave Columbus after breakfast and you’ll arrive in Vermillion in time to stroll around the charming town, admire the sailboats on the river and grab a bite to eat before you go relax.

There are so many fun things to do in Ohio with kids ! Whether you live here or plan to visit, these Ohio attractions for families make for fun day trips, staycations or vacations for all ages!

The beach in Vermilion, Ohio is beautiful!

With a population of over 11 million people, Ohio is the 7th largest state in the United States. Ohio is bordered on the north by Lake Erie and the south by the Ohio River. The entire state includes 3,877 square miles of water. (And yes, there are actually beaches in Ohio !)

I grew up in Ohio and I have lived here for the majority of my life. That’s a lot of time spent exploring Ohio! Even after all these years I continue to be surprised by the diversity of scenery that can be found in this underrated midwest state!

There are so many hidden gems in Ohio ! From the hills of Hocking Hills to the farmland of Amish Country to the shores of Lake Erie, traveling to a new part of the state can feel like an unexpected getaway!

LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Columbus is tons of fun for kids!

Ohio’s slogan is “ So Much to Discover ” and it couldn’t be more true! There is so much to love about Ohio ! I think you might be surprised at all the fun things there are to do in Ohio! Take a look through this list of fun things for families to do in Ohio and plan your next day out!

Hocking Hills is one of the most beautiful spots in all of Ohio! When hiking at Old Man’s Cave you will encounter some of Ohio’s most stunning scenery including water falls, caves and cliffs!

This is a challenging but doable hike with kids. There is so much to see no matter what the season!

2. Bison at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park - Galloway, Ohio

Bison roam through the pastures at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park, west of Columbus! Depending on the season, they may be in the winter pasture or the summer pasture.

The park is also home to a great Nature Center, canoeing and kayaking, creeking and lots more fun for families!

3. The Farm at Walnut Creek - Walnut Creek, Ohio

Drive your own car or take a wagon ride through an Amish farm to feed animals from your own hand!

The Farm at Walnut Creek is a working Amish farm that is open in the spring and summer for tours and special events. You can pet and feed animals like giraffes, camels, llamas, deer, buffalo and more!

4. The Wilds - Cumberland, Ohio

Take an open air safari trip through the 10,000 acre safari park where animals can come right up to the tram! You’re still in Ohio but you will feel like you have taken a trip to an exotic location!

See giraffes, rhinos, cheetahs, and more! The Wilds is one of the largest conservation centers in the world and on your trip you will not only see amazing animals, but you will learn how conservation efforts are bringing these animals back from extinction!

5. Young's Jersey Dairy - Yellow Springs, Ohio

Young’s Jersey Dairy is home to Udders and Putters which offers batting cages, beautiful mini golf courses, a petting zoo, giant slides, barrel rides and more!

Don’t miss the amazing ice cream or the famous fried cheese curds at The Diary Store!

6. Glacier Ridge Ninja Course - Plain City, Ohio

This natural play area is made up of three “Play Forms”: The Ramps, Towers and Platforms. There are several climbing structures, a rope hammock, wall climbing, rope climbing, a small zip line and lots of opportunities to hide and seek!

Beyond the Ninja Course, there are many other fun things for kids to do in the park including an obstacle course (great for teens), a wetland education center and a a playground.

7. National Museum of the U.S. Air Force - Dayton, Ohio

This museum in Dayton is home to all things Air Force! It's amazing AND it's free to visit

There are four large buildings that house flight simulators, a space shuttle replica, a presidential gallery featuring several Air Force Ones, plus planes from the various wars, photo galleries, life sized historical depictions and much, much more!

8. COSI - Columbus, Ohio

One of the top science museums in the country, the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) has something for kids (and adults) of all ages!

There are 2 full floors of hands-on science exhibits with different themes from Oceans to Gadgets to Energy, a cafe, a little kidspace that’s perfect for the 6 and under crowd, a permanent American Museum of Natural History Dinosaur Gallery and seasonal, traveling exhibits.

9. Ohio Caverns - West Liberty, Ohio

Ohio Caverns is the largest of all the caves in Ohio. There are several tour options available to see the caverns.

The caverns are so fascinating! It is just amazing to me what is hidden below our sight that we may never know about!

Kids can also enjoy gem mining on the property!

10. Olentangy Indian Caverns - Delaware, Ohio

13. The Dinosaur Park - Delaware, Ohio

Technically named Veteran's Spray and Play, but affectionately called the Dinosaur Park, this very cool park and splash kid is a destination for Ohio families!

The park has a dinosaur theme with large dinosaur prints in the sidewalk, a dinosaur slide and dinosaurs to run through at the splash pad.

The park also has a picnic area and snack shack.

14. EnterTRAINment Junction - West Chester, Ohio

EnterTRAINment Junction is heaven for train lovers! There is an amazing model train display (the world’s largest!), interactive exhibits, a play area for kids, plus two outdoor rides.

There is also an amazing toy store, a gift shop and a cafe on site.

15. The Butler County Donut Trail - Butler County, Ohio

Butler County, Ohio, just 20 minutes North of Cincinnati and 90 minutes south of Columbus boasts the largest number of donut shops per capita in the Midwest – maybe even in the country!

The Butler County Donut Trail consists of 13 stops. At any stop you can pick up a Passport to keep track of your progress! At each stop, get the passport stamped with the official Donut Trail stamp and when you’re finished, you can turn in or mail in your passport to the Butler county Visitor’s Bureau to receive an official t-shirt!

16. Ohio History Center and Ohio Village - Columbus, Ohio

Ohio History Center offers special events, interactive displays and Ohio Village, an outdoor town set in the 1880's filled with reenactors who can tell you all about life in the 1880's!

Kids will have hands-on fun while learning about the history of Ohio!

17. Franklin Park Conservatory's Children's Garden - Columbus, Ohio

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Children’s Garden at Franklin Park Conservatory is one of the top family-friendly attractions in Columbus!

The garden is built to be explored and played in by children! There are climbing structures, a water cascade and wading area, a wetland to explore, a cooking garden, a Nature Play Zone, and much more!

The Children’s Garden is also home to seasonal events and activities.

18. LEGOLAND Discovery Center - Columbus, Ohio

LEGOLAND Discovery Center can be found at Easton Town Center and offers tons of fun for kids who love LEGO bricks!

19. Richland Carrousel Park - Mansfield, Ohio

Take a ride on an old-fashioned carrousel! Take your pick to ride on a horse, bear, ostrich, rabbit, zebra and more!

The carrousel was built in the style of the early 1900’s and is $1 to ride! Refreshments and a gift shop are also on site.

20. Ohio Bird Sanctuary - Mansfield, Ohio

See bald eagles, feed the birds and take a hike at this awesome bird sanctuary in Mansfield, Ohio! This place is a hidden gem that provides education and a unique experience for kids!

21. A-HA Children's Museum - Lancaster, Ohio

The A-Ha Children's Museum is tons of fun for kids! Themuseum contains a water play area, building blocks, a construction vehicle and fire truck to climb in, pretend fishing, dinosaur digging, and a “real life” play area that contains a house, grocery store, pizza shop and more!

There is also a separate space for art projects and classes and a new outdoor nature playscape for outdoor fun!

22. Little Buckeye Children's Museum - Mansfield, Ohio

The Little Buckeye Children’s Museum is 2 floors of imaginative play for young children. The museum is geared toward children up to 12 years of age and has been in downtown Mansfield since April, 2011.

The museum contains a baby play area, dinosaur digging, and lots of areas for imaginative play like a grocery store, mechanic shop, veterinarian’s office and much, much more!

23. OSU Airport - Columbus, Ohio

The OSU Airport was recently remodeled and offers a great observation deck for watching planes take off and land. The terminal also has educational displays about the history of flight and the Ohio State University Ariport.

24. Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum - Bellevue, Ohio

This museum offers so much to see for train lovers! Displays include train cars you can walk through plus train memorabilia like lanterns, uniforms, signs, buttons, and objects used on trains like china, linens and more!

25. Stratford Ecological Center - Delaware, Ohio

Kids will love to visit Stratford Ecological Center where they can visit with animals in the barn, pick their own fruits and vegetables, take a leisure walk to the pond or attend a story time or special program.

15 Best Day Trips from Columbus (Ohio)

Columbus is the capital of the mid-western state of Ohio, and also its largest city.

Known for its numerous parks and world famous university, Columbus is also centrally located between Ohio’s two other big cities: Cleveland and Cincinnati.

It is in the perfect location to be used as a base to gain access to the entire state.

Within reach of Ohio are many opportunities for day tripping, with many historic mid-west cities and towns, such as Newark and Dayton, just a short drive away.

Nature lovers will find plenty of State Parks with hiking trails, cascading waterfalls and beautiful woodland scenery to explore.

Far north of Ohio lies the huge Lake Erie, along with the state’s only National Park: Cuyahoga National Park.

Around the state there are underground caverns, caves and even ancient Native American earthworks: lasting relics from a time long ago that have survived to this day and are an important part of the region’s long history.

1. Hocking Hills

Just southeast of Columbus is the Hocking Hills State Park, a must do day trip from the city that takes you to some of the most unusual rock formations in Ohio.

Hocking Hills is the site of caves, cliffs and crevasses, with short and long hikes connecting different parts of the park, as well as opportunities for kayaking, rock climbing and even zip lining.

The real highlight of the Hocking Hills is the cavernous Ash Cave, which forms a huge open recess in the rock that can be walked in and around.

Aside from the Ash Cave, there are many other rock formations to visit; don’t miss out on Cedar Falls, a spectacular waterfall which plunges over giant rocks.

2. Cuyahoga National Park

Cuyahoga National Park is Ohio’s only National Park.

Found north of Columbus and close to the city of Cleveland, it is a stunning area of natural beauty that follows the course of the Cuyahoga River, containing walking and cycling trails, waterfalls, and caves to discover.

The National Park also has an historical canal that can be traversed on foot.

This was the first canal in the state, stretching to Lake Erie in the north.

It allowed Ohio to be opened up to the rest of the country and the world by providing a means of entry and exit for people and goods.

The small, unassuming city of Dayton has played a huge role in the history of aviation.

This is where the Wright Brothers came from, and where they built their first aircraft; going down in history as the pioneers of modern flight.

Dayton, just a day trip away from Columbus, should be visited to see where flight really began.

Today it is also home to the National Museum of the United States Air Force, a very fitting location for one of the largest aviation museums in the world.

Newark is just 40 miles away, and is a great retreat from the big city.

Here you can find the world’s largest basket, which is actually a huge, company headquarters building shaped and designed to look like a basket.

There is also the interesting Works Museum: a museum dedicated to Newark’s industrial and technical history, where you can learn about glass blowing and canal building alongside the history of the region.

Around Newark there are also numerous ancient earthworks: huge mounds constructed by old Native Indian civilizations, that have survived to this day.

5. Miamisburg Mound

The Indian mounds aren’t only found around Newark, but exist in most of the state of Ohio.

One of the most interestingly shaped is the towering, conical Miamisburg Mound, raised on a high ridge and visible from miles away.

At 65-feet tall, it features a staircase through the center of the grassy mound which takes visitors to the top for panoramic views out over the surrounding area.

The Mound is one of thousands that have been discovered, the relics of lost civilizations, but Miamisburg is unique because of its height; few other surviving mounds can match it for size.

6. Olentangy Indian Caverns

If you are interested in Native American history, then another great day trip from Ohio is a journey to the Olentangy Indian Caverns.

This natural cave system was used by the local native Huron people as shelter.

The caverns stretch over three floors and would have provided a refuge and safe haven in times of war, being difficult to find from above ground, let alone enter.

The caverns can be explored on underground tours led by local guides.

7. Tecumseh

Tecumseh is not a place, but a historical show that has to be seen when visiting Ohio.

This is an outdoor drama set in the hills of Ohio, and it tells the story of the local Indians; in particular the chief Tecumseh, who tried in vain to defend his land and people from colonization in the 1700s.

Because it is held outdoors, the show is only performed in the summer months, but it is worth scheduling your Columbus trip to coincide with a showing, as it receives accolades worldwide.

8. Amish Country Ohio

Northeast of Ohio is Amish Country, made up of several towns and cities, the largest of which is Millersburg.

This is a completely different world, where the Amish communities live in varied ways according to their beliefs in the Bible, meaning there is little technology and lots of faith.

You will see horse drawn carriages on the roads and traditional houses in the towns, while many of the communities actually speak Pennsylvania Dutch as their first language, rather than English.

9. Seneca Caverns

Seneca Caverns is a huge underground cave system with miles of passageways and underground rivers that feed the region’s entire water system.

The cave is multi-layered and to date there are seven underground levels which can be explored.

Guides will take intrepid visitors through the system; exploring the caverns and narrow passages that lead further and further down.

It’s not known how deep the system really goes, but it’s certainly a long way.

10. Ludlow Falls

Ohio has an abundance of beautiful waterfalls due to its rocky landscape, but Ludlow Falls stands out amongst them as a spectacular cascade.

Located near Dayton, not far from Columbus, Ludlow Falls is in fact hidden away beneath a bridge, making it difficult to spot.

The walk there is easy as long as you know where you are going, and it’s a quiet, secluded spot to enjoy Ohio’s enticing natural scenery.

11. Clifton Mill

Clifton Mill is a beautifully scenic piece of Ohio heritage which dates back to 1802. The Mill is on the banks of the Clifton River, and is spectacular to see, with man-made waterfalls cascading down from its position above the river.

The Mill is water powered, and these days is more of a tourist attraction than a working mill.

There’s an on-site restaurant, and at Christmas time they put on an extravagant light display that’s famous across the state.

12. The Wilds, Cumberland

The Wilds is a unique, open-air Safari in Cumberland Ohio, where the animals roam free and visitors are taken around on big safari trucks to see rare and endangered wildlife in natural settings.

The Wilds is a non-profit organization; they put the animals first, and that’s why the facility is so popular.

They have species from across the world and educate people on conservation and responsibility rather than just providing entertainment at the expense of the captive animals.

13. Salt Fork State Park

Salt Fork State Park is the largest of Ohio’s state parks, covering huge areas of forest east of Columbus.

It’s a beautiful place to hike, bike and get into the heart of Ohio’s natural environment, but it’s also known locally for the legend of Big Foot.

Believe what you will, but local lore says that it’s the home of this mythical creature.

Reported sightings have been made all across Salt Fork since the first European settlers arrived in the 1700s.

Documentaries have been filmed here and hardcore explorers head out into the wild to try and find this legendary creature.

They even hold a Big Foot conference here to celebrate this monstrous legend.

14. Cincinnati

An hour and a half south of Columbus is the city of Cincinnati: the third largest city in Ohio.

It’s the home of the Cincinnati Reds, the oldest baseball team in America.

Once just a sprawling industrial city, Cincinnati has reinvented itself as a tourist destination, offering great food and a growing cultural scene, all spread along the banks of the Ohio River.

The cityscape itself is one of the best reasons to visit, as the center has a huge concentration of distinct, 19th century architectural buildings from Cincinnati’s industrial boom days.

15. Cleveland

Cleveland, Ohio’s second largest city, is found in a beautiful setting on the banks of the huge Lake Erie.

It is a culturally and historically significant city, dating back to the early days of European exploration of the Great Lakes.

Today it is most famous for being the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: a museum showcasing the best of rock from across the world.

"Ohio is the heart of the heartland," Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development, told Travel + Leisure . "Ohio is incredibly diverse, from 75 state parks to big city amenities which include a thriving arts and culture scene and award-winning culinary experiences, to the charm and comfort that can be found in its distinctive neighborhoods and historic small towns."

Here are 14 of the best weekend getaways in Ohio to consider, from small towns to big cities — with all sorts of adventures in between.

Yellow Springs

Whether it’s a girls’ trip or a family getaway, Yellow Springs promises activities galore. The eclectic town, known for its hippie flair and funky vibes, brims with creative restaurants like Winds Café or Ellie’s , plus a host of stops to embrace the local nature. Bike some of the 80-mile Little Miami Scenic Trail or get your hike on through the forests of Glen Helen and John Bryan State Park. Airbnb options abound here; alternatively, try a bed and breakfast like the Arthur Morgan House.

"If any town can take you back to the '60s, it’s Yellow Springs. Find murals, sculptures, and tiny pieces of groovy art everywhere you go," said Mihalik. "This picturesque town is completely walkable, and your feet can take you from your hotel to a nature preserve and lunch all in one afternoon! Visit the serene Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve, then head to one of the many shops for local art.

Mihalik added: "If you’re a pet owner, your fido will love it here as most businesses are dog-friendly and many eateries offer outdoor seating. If you’re with the kiddos, Young’s Jersey Dairy, famous for its ice cream is a great stop. Be sure to visit local favorite, Yellow Springs Brewery for a refreshing pint."

If food is your favorite part of travel, don’t miss a weekend in Cincinnati. Few neighborhoods symbolize the city’s increasing rise to culinary fame like Over-the-Rhine, better known as OTR. "Culture reigns supreme in Cincinnati," said Mihalik. "The arts flourish, sports teams entertain, and the food scene is ever-growing. This city in southwestern Ohio offers everything from family-friendly attractions along the Ohio Riverfront to the rich history of the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. New haunts pop up here constantly; don’t miss Salazar , Senate , and The Eagle , to name a few. The bites and brews continue well throughout the Queen City, from Moerlein Lager House on the festive and stadium-dotted waterfront to timeless classic Eli’s BBQ , located east along the waterfront toward Ault Park. Nature in Hocking Hills State Park is the main attraction here; add Cantwell Cliffs, Old Man’s Cave, and Conkle’s Hollow to your Hocking Hills to-do list. When it’s time to refuel, hit the low-key but delicious Hocking Hills Winery (try the patio if the weather allows). Whether you’re looking for a friends' getaway or a family escape, add world-renowned Cedar Point , a.k.a. the roller-coaster capital of America, to your list. Cedar Point sits on Lake Erie, with sky-high rides that overlook the water and a true beach-vacation vibe, particularly at the adjacent Hotel Breakers , which has a beach bar, volleyball, and water sports rentals. You’ll need at least a weekend to get through all of Cedar Point’s rides, from the soaring Millennium Force , which has one of the longest drops and fastest speeds in the world, to the adrenaline-pumping Valravn , a dive coaster that sees you hanging over a 90-degree precipice — before thundering straight over the edge.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

For outdoor enthusiasts, it doesn’t get much better than a trip to northeast Ohio’s Cuyahoga Valley National Park . This 33,000-acre forested escape, located 40 minutes south of Cleveland, features towering waterfalls, secluded hiking trails, and a white-steeple-marked main town — Peninsula — that looks like a postcard from New England.

"While Cuyahoga Valley National Park is Ohio's only national park, it's also one of the most visited parks in the country. The falls at Blue Hen are like a scene from a storybook, surrounded by lush forest on all sides," said Mihalik. "You can also explore the area by train with the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad - one of the oldest tourist excursion railways in the country, or by hopping in the water and kayaking the river."

Stay the night at an Airbnb in Peninsula or the surrounding towns, or book a room at The Inn at Brandywine Falls . Add picturesque stops like Brandywine Falls and Ledges Overlook to your itinerary, and bike the Towpath Trail with rentals from Century Cycles . As for the fare, nothing tops Sarah’s Vineyard , a winery within the national park proper — known for its homemade wines, woodfired pizza, and national park views.

Geneva on the Lake

For decades, the Lake Erie-adjacent Geneva on the Lake has welcomed travelers with an assortment of Ohio fun: wineries, boating, and beach access, to name a few. According to Mihalik, this town has been a favorite for decades. "The charm of what locals call 'The Strip' is the reason that some don’t let a year go by without their annual visit to Geneva-on-the-Lake," said Mihalik. "Take the Summer Fun Heritage trail of 30 markers along the Strip that tell the story of the last century and a half. Charter a boat at the Geneva Marina for the best walleye fishing in the world. Take a zipline canopy tour, play a round of mini golf, race go-carts, or simply relax on the beach.

The destination attracts all sorts of travelers, but it’s particularly great for mom-and-daughter trips, family getaways, and couple outings. Book a room at The Lodge at Geneva on the Lake for direct access to the area’s top attractions. There’s a wine shuttle to local vineyards, bike rental, snowshoe rentals, and ziplining, plus onsite restaurants — although it may be hard to pull yourself away from the sips and flavors of Ohio’s wine country .

Lake Erie Islands

"Along Ohio's Lake Erie coast, a pair of islands beckons and surprises with island breezes and a carefree feeling. This Northwest Ohio area features miles of shoreline, perfect for spending a day at the beach or boating on the lake," Mihalik told T+L. "After just one visit you'll be dreaming what it's like to live by the lake and the charming town of Sandusky is just the place! Chosen as USA Today's 'Best Coastal Small Town' and an Ohio Magazine 'Best Hometown' — it's a place that you'll keep falling in love with."

There’s a rule of thumb when traveling to the Lake Erie islands: If you’re looking to party, head to Put-in-Bay. If it’s nature and tranquility you seek, head to Kelleys Island. The former is perfect for bachelor or bachelorette weekends, with raucous festivities and pool parties at local haunts like Beer Barrel Saloon and MIST Pool Bar . Over on Kelleys Island, the second-largest Lake Erie island, couples and families can enjoy a bit more serenity, be it beachcombing, birding, or hiking the North Shore Loop. As for accommodations, try Kelleys Island Venture Resort — the island’s only luxury property. Airbnb provides ideal group accommodations for Put-in-Bay.

Waynesville

Craving a family or group trip? Head to Waynesville, a small Ohio town known for antiques galore and a top-notch theme park: King’s Island . This park, home to 100 rides, attractions, and shows, can be experienced in a full day. That leaves the rest of the Waynesville weekend for exploring antique shops like Brass Lantern or hiking dozens of trail miles at nearby Caesar Creek State Park. Airbnb offers a handful of quaint and charming Waynesville accommodations; for a more outdoorsy stay, try camping at Caesar Creek.

Loveland, a small Cincinnati suburb, is about as charming as Ohio small towns get. Its historic architecture, vibrant main square, kid-friendly restaurants, and nature parks make it perfect for a family getaway. Plus, according to Mihalik, "Loveland features amazing outdoor adventures."

Start your morning on the Loveland Bike Trail, a rails-to-trails project that connects with another local bike trail: the Little Miami Scenic Trail. "While there, you can also check out the Little Miami River canoe and kayak launch – a great way to explore this Scenic River," said Mihalik.

Then, check out the hand-crafted Loveland Castle , go rollerskating at Castle Skateland , or get back to nature at the Little Miami Conservancy . For a central hotel, try the trendy and boutique Loveland Lofts .

For a guys’ weekend, a father-son escape, or a getaway for sports fans, head to Cleveland on the shores of Lake Erie. The city offers numerous ways to enjoy professional sports: the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, the MLB’s Cleveland Guardians, and the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers. All stadiums and arenas are centrally located near downtown Cleveland, which means you can book a room at the Kimpton Schofield Hotel and walk or Uber to the venue du jour. The mid-sized city features a variety of museums — think the National Museum of the US Air Force , Carillon Historical Park , and America's Packard Museum . But it’s more than just history. If you’re an art enthusiast, head to Columbus for a creative weekend escape. This central Ohio city is known for its robust creative scene — take the jam-packed Columbus Museum of Art as proof. "Outside of Columbus, you'll find numerous suburbs and surrounding towns with a unique feel and an authentic vibe all their own."

Other unique art experiences include Otherworld , a 32,000-square-foot underground art installation, the Wexner Center for the Arts , and Ohio Theater , a culture hub located in a 1920s venue. For a unique overnight, stay at the quirky and upscale Le Méridien Columbus, The Joseph , in Italian Village.

Football fans travel from all over to visit Canton’s Pro Football Hall of Fame , a museum with permanent and rotating exhibits celebrating beloved players and the history of the sport. The fun doesn’t end with football, though. Families can enjoy the Canton Museum of Art , go-kart racing at K1 Speed Canton , and the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum . The DoubleTree on Market Avenue is the most convenient place to stay for a weekend getaway in Canton; Airbnb has numerous apartment and rental house options, too.

Mansfield, located halfway between Columbus and Cleveland, is a great weekend escape for couples and families, with an array of unique experiences. 3. Hocking Hills State Park 

Hocking Hills State Park in Logan is a gorgeous area for enjoying the outdoors and one of the most popular day trips from Columbus, Ohio . You’ll find plenty of hiking , mountain biking, and camping. 6. Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park and Museum

Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park and Museum, located in Hamilton (in Butler County ), is a fantastic 300+ acre outdoor sculpture park that you can drive through in your car, or you can rent a golf cart (I highly recommend this). Be sure to stop into the Ancient Sculpture Museum to see the Greek, Roman, Etruscan, Syrian, and Egyptian sculptures that date back to 1550 B.C.

7. Young’s Jersey Dairy

Young’s Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs is a great spot to visit with young kids. 8. Newport Aquarium

The Newport Aquarium isn’t in Ohio, actually. It’s located across the river from Cincinnati in Newport, Kentucky, but it’s still close enough to make a great day trip.

My favorite parts were the giant Pacific octopus (seriously, the trip is worth it to see this guy alone!), the 2 white alligators, and the huge tank that features sharks, a sea turtle, a giant 300lb grouper, and shark rays.

9. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland is a must-visit for anyone who loves music. The museum features traditional exhibits along with The Garage, a hands-on area featuring 12 instrument stations with instructional videos to try. The museum’s building and iconic glass pyramid were designed by famed architect I.M. Pei , who also designed the pyramid in front of The Louvre in Paris, France.

At the park, you’ll find a walk-through archery course, a lake for fishing and boating, a dog park, golf and mini-golf, a beach for swimming, over 14 hiking trails, and more.

11. National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

Located on the beautiful shores of Lake Erie, Maumee Bay State Park is 1,336 acres of natural beauty. With 2 miles of boardwalk and 5 miles of biking/walking paths, the park is perfect for a nature walk or a relaxing bike ride.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Established in 1974 as part of the National Park Service, the admission free 33,000 acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a beautiful place to explore nature, hosting more than 2 million visitors per year. The park stretches from Cleveland to Akron and offers a multitude of landscapes and natural features to explore including the Cuyahoga river, marshes, gorges, waterfalls, ledges, cliffs, lakes and more. 

Visitors will find miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, paddling, and cross-country skiing offering you many ways to experience the rich wildlife found in the park. You can also enjoy the beauty and nature of the park by train when you plan an excursion on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Once the hunting grounds for the Delaware Native Amerians, Mohican State Park is now a place to get away for year round fun in nature.

The park includes 9 hiking trails that lead you to past a scenic covered bridge, two waterfalls, the lake shoreline, and more. Hikers are also welcome on the 25 mile mountain bike trail and bridle trails located in the park and surrounding state forest. If you enjoy fishing, take your rod to try your hand at catching bass, white crappies and brown trout in the many lake and river fishing areas.

Not far outside of Dayton and topping out at just under 3,700 residents, Yellow Springs Ohio was given the title as one of the “Coolest Small Towns in America” by Budget Travel for its diverse community of arts, entertainment, and culture.

Put in Bay Ohio

Once serving as a base for commander Oliver Hazard Perry during the War of 1812, South Bass Island, popularly known as Put-in-Bay, is now a boaters paradise and island of activity for visitors. 

The second largest of the Lake Erie Islands, Put-in-Bay is only accessible by ferry, private boat, or airplane, but once you arrive the most popular transportation is bike or golf cart. Camp at the State Park, relax lakeside, learn about the history of the island at Perry’s Monument, explore a cave, tour a winery, play at Adventure Bay Amusement Park, and more.

Kelleys Island Ohio

It can be hard to get the change of scenery your soul needs between work, busy, schedules, and travel restrictions. Luckily, Cincinnati is surrounded by other exciting cities, small towns, parks, and hidden gems just waiting to be explored.

From nature and art to shopping and museums, there are some fun Cincinnati day trips just waiting for you! You can find all kinds of adventure within 150 miles of Cincinnati. That’s less than one tank of gas!

Day Trips From Cincinnati:

• Indianapolis, Indiana

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 109 miles, approx. 1.75 hour drive

When you want to get away from it all but don’t have time to go far, Indianapolis is a great place to visit. Indy is the capital of Indiana and it’s also the largest city in the state. Indianapolis may be known as home to the Indianapolis Speedway but there’s so much more to discover!

Learn something new at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis . Kids (and their grownups) can explore DinoSphere, the massive dinosaur exhibit; immerse in Greek culture at Take Me There: Greece; hear the stories of three powerful kids – Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges, and Ryan White; and much more!

Another city that sits upon the banks of the Ohio River is nearby Louisville, Kentucky. The largest city in the state of Kentucky, this city is often linked to horse racing as it’s the home of Churchill Downs.

Louisville is home to Bourbon Country as well with stops along Kentucky’s famous Bourbon Trail. Bourbon lovers can try out some local favorites at Stitzel Weller Distillery , Rabbit Hole , and Michter’s Distillery .

Experience the internationally renowned Churchill Downs . Even when it’s not Kentucky Derby season, there are plenty of other opportunities to see a live race. And don’t miss the Kentucky Derby Museum!

All ages will love the Louisville Zoo . Over 1,100 animals currently call the zoo home, and exhibits include: Africa, Australia, Glacier Run, HerpAquarium, Islands, and South America.

Reds fans will want to “swing” by the Louisville Slugger Museum and learn all about how this iconic baseball hat has helped shape one of America’s favorite games.

• Yellow Springs, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 68 miles, approx. 1.25 hour drive

What’s not to love about Yellow Springs, Ohio – nicknamed “Everyone’s Favorite Place”? You can enjoy some shopping and great food in the downtown area and then drive just a few miles to some of the best hiking areas in Ohio.

Downtown Yellow Springs is packed with an eccentric assortment of restaurants, shopping, and galleries.

Glen Helen Nature Preserve is home to the town’s namesake, the Yellow Spring. Hit the trails to explore the area’s natural beauty and see a waterfall (or two!).

Hike, bike, canoe, fish, and camp at John Bryan State Park . You won’t want to miss the limestone gorge and scenic river views!

Grab some homemade ice cream and see a real working farm at Young’s Jersey Dairy . Over the years, they’ve also added batting cages, mini golf, and the Kiddie Corral for more family fun.

Take a bike ride or walk along th e Little Miami Scenic Trail . This 78-mile shaded trail runs nearby downtown Yellow Springs and John Bryan State Park.

• Hocking Hills, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 135 miles, approx. 2.25 hour drive

Hocking Hills is an Ohio State Park. Located in southeast Ohio, this area is popular in all four seasons. From hiking to camping to overnight cabin stays, put this one on your must-do list!

Be sure to make a stop at the park’s nature center and become an Ohio Explorer with the New Ohio State Parks Passport!

Take a zipline tour with Hocking Hills Canopy Tour s to get an adventurous view of the area’s beautiful forests.

Hike to the area’s scenic waterfalls . Reach the Upper Falls by taking the Old Man’s Cave trail. Take the Cedar Falls trail to see (can you guess?)… Cedar Falls! Ash Cave is a unique waterfall that you can view from 360° by taking the aptly named Ash Cave trail.

Rappel and rock climb with High Rock Adventures . They also offer guided Ecotours where you can take a nature hike and learn all about the area’s history, plants, and animals.

Enjoy locally crafted wine at family-owned Hocking Hills Winery .

• Frankfort, Kentucky

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 80 miles, approx. 1.5 hour drive

Here’s a day trip that took me by surprise! The town of Frankfort is so charming! Take a tour of the Kentucky State Capitol Building (in the image above). Be sure to take advantage of the self guided tour using the building’s Walking Tour brochure, and be sure not to miss the rotunda murals. There’s a nod to Cincinnati included there!

Right outside of Frankfort, you’ll find some popular spots along the Bourbon Trail: Buffalo Trace (love that place!), Four Roses Bourbon, Woodford Reserve, and Wild Turkey.

Daniel Boone is said to be buried at the nearby Frankfort Cemetery, along with his wife Rebecca. His final resting place provides a lovely view of the area.

Don’t miss the downtown area (so charming). If you’d like to stay over for the night, I can recommend the bed and breakfast in Frankfort – The Meeting House . Our room was wonderful, the hosts were super friendly, and the food was amazing!

• Lexington, Kentucky

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 83 miles, approx. 1.5 hour drive

Just a few hours south of Cincinnati and right off I-75, Lexington is the heart of Kentucky’s Bluegrass region. The city is best known for its beautiful rolling hills, fertile soil, and, of course, its horse farms.

Lexington is known as the Horse Capital of the World, so a visit almost wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Keeneland . See a live race, take a tour of the property, or grab dinner at the Keeneland Track Kitchen – or try them all!

Maybe a Zipline Canopy Tour through the Boone Creek Gorge is more your style? See the gorge from a new perspective via six zip lines, three sky bridges, a rappel, a spiral, and a floating staircase. The tour is perfect for 2-10 people and lasts 2.5 hours.

Visit Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co. for an authentic taste of the Bourbon Trail. Or, take a guided tour with Bourbon in the Bluegrass to tour and visit three nearby distilleries: Woodford Reserve Distillery, Historic Buffalo Trace Distillery, and Four Roses Distillery.

Grab a beer at one of our favorite Kentucky breweries: West Sixth Brewing . Enjoy a brew straight from the source and check out the building’s 100 year history, which was originally home to the Rainbo Bread Factory. The brewery has a huge taproom, a section full of picnic tables, and a few tables along the street.

• Columbus, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 107 miles, approx. 1.5 hour drive

We couldn’t have a day trips post without featuring the capital of Ohio, “the heart of it all” – Columbus, Ohio. There’s so much to see and do in this city – so much so that we wrote an entire article just on what to see and do in Columbus .

Spend hours exploring the gardens at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens . Beautiful views are at every turn, between 400+ plant species, the Chihuly Collection of glass artwork, and the Light Raiment II light art installation at the Palm House.

With 300+ stores and over 30 million visitors each year, the Easton Town Center is one of the midwest’s premier shopping destinations. Beyond shopping, the campus is also home to Ohio’s largest movie theater, parks, town squares, dining destinations, and a comedy club.

Visit the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium , home to 130+ animals from around the world! Exhibits include Asia Quest, Expedition Congo, Heart of Africa, North America, Shores, and Voyage to Australia and the Islands.

Every Saturday from June to October (excluding July 4), Ohio farmers sell their freshly-picked produce at the North Market Farmer’s Market . Grab a bite to eat, shop local vendors, or pick up some produce to go at the area’s oldest and largest market of its kind.

Visit COSI , the “hands-on science museum and planetarium”. Exhibits are set up to make kids (and adults!) feel like they are actually experiencing the things they are learning about: see giant dinosaur skeletons, take a ride in a space capsule, drive an underwater ROV, and more!

• Dayton, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 55 miles, approx. 1 hour drive

Located less than an hour away, Dayton is definitely day trip worthy. Enjoy some great food at the Oregon District, visit a musuem, take a hike… and don’t overlook nearby Yellow Springs too (see info about that above).

Visit the world’s largest aviation museum: the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force . Military history and aviation buffs can spend hours exploring the displays of 360 aerospace vehicles and missiles, thousands of historical items, and the story of Orville and Wilbur Wright.

Learn about Dayton’s history and its impact on the world (hint: Orville Wright was born in Dayton!) at Carillon Historical Park .

Explore Cox Arboretum . Between a butterfly house, shrub garden, walking trails, a children’s maze and more – these lush gardens will make you forget you’re within an hour’s drive of two major cities.

With over 1,000 works of art, you can spend all day admiring the Dayton Art Institute ‘s vast collection of art form all over the world – some dating back 5,000 years!

Kids will love spending the day at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery . With a heavy focus on hands-on experiences, kids can pretend play at the Explorers Crossing, create at the Strictly Briks building station, experience ocean life first hand at the Tidal Pool, spend some time in the MeadWestvaco treehouse, and more!

• Rabbit Hash, Kentucky

From downtown Cincinnati: 30 miles, ~45 minute drive

Here’s a trip that everyone needs to make at least once – Rabbit Hash!

Rabbit Hash is pretty tiny, but the Rabbit Hash General Stor e is definitely worth the drive! Started in 1831, this hidden gem draws visitors from far and wide and has survived three major floods. Shop its famous antiques, Bybee pottery, handmade goods from Berea College, and more.

• Hoosier National Forest, Indiana

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 144 miles, approx. 2.25 hour drive

Spanning across 9 counties in southern Indiana, this 200,000+ acre forest is the perfect outdoor escape from the city and suburbs. There’s TONS to do there, but here are a few ideas to get you started:

• Immerse yourself in nature in the forest’s trail systems and wilderness areas
• Learn about the area’s human history by visiting the Lick Creek African American Settlement (1815-1900), the Rickenbaugh House , and Mano Point (which was once a prehistoric village)
• Spend the day navigating the Orienteering area
• Fish at Sundance Lake
• Go waterfalling at Hemlock Cliffs
• Hueston Woods, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 47 miles, approx. 1 hour drive

Hueston Woods isn’t too far from Cincinnati, but offers a day full of outdoor adventure:

• Hike on the park’s 12 trails, including the Handicap Accessible Sugar Bush Trail
• Fish, swim, and boat at Acton Lake
• Stay overnight at the Lodge or the park’s campground
• Play a round of golf at the Hueston Woods Golf Course

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 44 miles, approx. 1 hour drive

Caesar Creek State Park is another park that’s close enough to Cincinnati to make it an easy day trip, but far enough way to feel like you’re getting out of town:

• Take a swim or lounge in the sand at the 1,300 square foot public beach
• Hit the trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding
• Shoot arrows at targets 10-40 feet away at the Archery Range
• Go fishing on over 40 miles of shoreline
• Take your boat out on the 2,830 acre lake, including 5 launch ramps
• Stay overnight at the park’s campground
