Silversea is a leader in the luxury, small-ship cruising market. These cruises typically appeal to the high-end traveler looking for personalized service, upscale dining and accommodations, access to smaller ports and a top-notch vacation experience.

If you're in the market for a high-end cruise vacation, here's everything you need to know about Silversea.

About Silversea

You won't find waterslides, kids clubs or roller coasters on a Silversea cruise.

Instead, expect an elevated experience designed for those looking for a relaxing yet entertaining sailing. Here are a few key features of Silversea cruises:

Accommodations

Every one of Silversea's cabins has an ocean view, and they're all designated as suites with a high space-to-guest ratio. For guests' needs throughout the cruise, butler service is available in every room.

Some suites are more luxurious — smaller suites only have windows overlooking the ocean, while classic veranda suites and many others come with a balcony.

Some room categories, such as the ultra-luxurious Otium Suite, are exclusive to Silversea's newest ship, Silver Nova. Others are found across the fleet, although accommodations on board each vessel may differ slightly.

All-inclusive sailings

Many cruise lines charge their passengers a base fare for the trip, allowing them to choose various add-ons — such as beverages, specialty restaurants, internet access and port excursions — for an additional cost.

Silversea does away with this. It advertises an all-inclusive cruise package, which includes everything from shore excursions and alcoholic drinks to butler service and gratuities.

Primary U.S. ports

Silversea ships span the globe, but travelers that don't want to venture too far from home will find many cruises departing from Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Trips also depart from New York City for destinations in Canada.

Those wishing to depart from the West Coast can set sail from San Francisco or Los Angeles. Ships from these ports travel to the Caribbean, Alaska, Canada and other far-flung destinations.

Where does Silversea sail?

Silversea's destination map is extensive, with over 900 ports on all seven continents. Sailings are at least six days long, but trips can last several weeks to a month or more.

For those with the time and the money, Silversea offers World Cruises that travel from continent to continent in a global adventure that can take as many as 140 days.

How much does a Silversea cruise cost?

Silversea sailings are no discount venture, but the all-inclusive nature of each cruise adds value.

Meals, drinks, entertainment and onboard special events are all part of the price. The rates vary based on demand, destination and time of year.

There are two types of prices: "door-to-door," which includes airport transfers and airfare, or "port-to-port," which is the cruise fare without any transportation to or from the port.

Rates can vary from as low as $2,800 for a seven-day trip from Colombia to Florida to $94,700 for a 125-day expedition cruise from Chile to Norway.

Silversea also offers special fares for single travelers on select excursions, which provides a discount instead of paying the full cost of a double-occupancy cabin.

What is the best Silversea ship?

There are 13 ships in the Silversea fleet — with more scheduled for delivery in the coming years — ranging in size from 51 to 364 cabins. The best ship, however, will depend on the type of sailing you want.

The smallest ships are typically expedition ships that sail itineraries like the Galapagos or Antarctica. For example, the 100-passenger Silver Origin was Silversea's first purpose-built destination ship, built explicitly for cruising in the Galapagos. It is also the most environmentally-friendly ship built by Silversea.

Another small ship is the Silver Explorer, with a capacity for 144 guests and a strengthened hull to sail in Antarctica and the Arctic safely.

On the other end of the spectrum, you have larger ships such as Silver Spirit, which was renovated in 2018. With space for 608 passengers, it spends much of its time sailing around Europe, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean.

Ships like Silver Spirit look more like cruise ships, with amenities that include larger pools, lounges and plentiful dining options. Expedition ships are smaller by nature and therefore have fewer onboard facilities.

The best Silversea ship depends on the type of traveler you are, the destinations you want to visit, and the amenities you desire.

What is the newest Silversea ship?

Silver Nova is Silversea's newest ship, with plans to set sail later this summer. It will also be the largest ship in the Silversea fleet, with space for 728 passengers. Coming in 2024 is a second ship of the same size, the Silver Ray.

These ships feature a new asymmetrical design that gives their interiors a more spacious feel. Additionally, they'll have the largest pools in the Silversea fleet, and every suite will have a balcony.

What's included in a Silversea cruise

As mentioned above, Silversea advertises its cruises as all-inclusive, and compared to many cruise lines , this is pretty accurate. Here's what's included with all Silversea cruises:

24-hour butler service.

Complimentary beverages, including alcohol, around the ship and in minibars.

Gourmet meals, including room service and specialty restaurants.

Gratuities.

Select shore excursions.

Wi-Fi access.

Onboard lectures and entertainment.

Passengers who opt for the door-to-door all-inclusive option will also receive the following:

Private transfers to and from their home airport.

Airfare to and from the port city, including international flights.

Transfers between the ship and the airport.

Overnight hotel stays in the port city on arrival or before returning home, if needed.

A few items are not included in the fare and will incur an additional cost:

Meals or accommodations while on shore.

Some shore excursions.

Reservation fees for select restaurants.

Laundry service.

Personal spa or beauty services.

Silversea loyalty program: Venetian Society

Unlike other cruise loyalty programs, Silversea's program — the Venetian Society — does not award points. It doesn't have elite status tiers, either. Instead, members earn "days" based on the length of each sailing. The more days they accrue, the more benefits they can receive.

Here's what Venetian Society members can expect to receive based on the number of days accrued:

All members . By joining the program and completing your first sailing, you're eligible for 5% savings on certain upcoming sailings. This can represent great value on expensive cruises, meaning signing up makes sense even if you only plan to sail occasionally.

100+ days . 5% savings on all future door-to-door sailings.

250+ days . 10% savings on all future door-to-door sailings.

350 days . Once you reach this level, you are eligible for one complimentary seven-day sailing.

500 days . Reaching this milestone means enjoying a complimentary 14-day trip.

500+ days . After this landmark, members will receive one complimentary seven-day trip for each additional 150 days they sail.

How to redeem Silversea days

The best part about the Venetian Society is that the benefits are cumulative. It's not similar to a points program where once you redeem points, your balance gets lower until you earn more. With Venetian Society, you can take advantage of that perk once you hit the next milestone while enjoying previous bonuses.

For example, once you hit 350 days, you are eligible for a complimentary seven-day voyage. But, you can also take 10% off any door-to-door cruises — a perk you receive after reaching 250 days — you book after that.

Yes. Like most of its onboard amenities, Silversea cruises include basic Wi-Fi free of charge. Those in upper suites will receive free premium Wi-Fi speeds, and other guests can pay for a faster speed package. The prices vary by sailing and ship.

Yes, everything is included in the “port-to-port” fare. Adding airfare and ground transfers is part of the “door-to-door” offering.

Drinks are included in the all-inclusive fare, so no additional drink package is offered.

No, but some destinations may have their requirements. For example, there may be some destinations or embarkation points where unvaccinated travelers must provide a negative covid test, and vaccinated travelers would have to show proof of receiving the vaccine. All requirements and protocols are subject to change.

What is the average cost of a Silversea cruise?

With Silversea Cruises, you see the world in elegance. Discover the typical cost of luxury at sea to transform your journey.

Book Silversea Cruises Now!

For those seeking a refined and lavish maritime experience, Silversea Cruises stands out as a beacon of luxury. Cruising has long been linked to a sense of adventure and relaxation. Tourists who are intrigued frequently wonder, " What is the average cost of a Silversea cruise? " Let's embark on a mission to solve the puzzle of why these extraordinary journeys are so expensive.

Silversea Cruises Average Cost Per Person

Silversea Cruises has been transforming the concept of marine tourism ever since it was founded. In the field of ultra-luxury cruises, the company is a pioneer. Silversea has established a reputation among rich travelers with its small ships, tailored service, and all-inclusive vacations. But such exclusivity comes at a price, and the solution lies in understanding what factors contribute to the overall cost.

1. Ship choice and itinerary

Each of Silversea's small ships offers a unique blend of sophistication and luxury. The cruise ship and itinerary selections have a significant impact on pricing. An excursion to the icy landscapes of Antarctica might cost more money than a getaway to the Caribbean's crystal-clear waters. The duration of the cruise is another essential consideration, with longer itineraries often costing more.

2. Suite selection

Many of the spacious, tastefully appointed suites with butler service and private verandas associated with the name Silversea are huge and spacious. The level of luxury and the size of the suite directly impact how much the cruise will cost. From the cozy comfort of a Vista Suite to the expansive majesty of the Owner's Suite, the level of accommodation that best meets a traveler's preferences and budget may be found.

3. Inclusive amenities

One of Silversea Cruises' distinguishing features is its commitment to providing an all-inclusive experience. This suggests that once you board, a variety of services, including exquisite cuisine and specialty drinks, are already included in the cost. Transportation to and from the ship, tipping, and shore excursions are all included. Even though there may be a higher upfront cost, this ensures easy, worry-free travel without additional expenses.

4. Time of booking

The overall cost may change significantly depending on when a Silversea trip is booked. Early bird promotions, last-minute cruise deals , and seasonal discounts are regularly available in the cruise business. Travelers may be able to enjoy the same degree of luxury at a lower cost by scheduling and making reservations during promotional seasons.

5. Onboard enrichment programs

Silversea Cruises takes great satisfaction in providing intellectually challenging excursions both on and off the ship. With complete location experiences and expert-led seminars, the cruise line goes beyond the traditional idea of sea travel. But the total price may change if these services are included. The added value can be well worth the cost for those seeking an in-depth and intellectually interesting vacation.

6. Special offers and loyalty programs

For frequent cruise travelers, Silversea frequently introduces exclusive promotions and rewards programs. These might include no-cost upgrades and onboard credits. For those who are committed to making Silversea their go-to cruise carrier, loyalty programs can be a profitable method to reduce costs and increase the overall value of the vacation.

Is a Silversea cruise worth the high price?

silversea cruise price

Erica Silverstein

Travel Smarter! Sign up for our free newsletter.

Let me admit up front I’m not Silversea’s targeted demographic. I’m younger than 50, do not possess a large amount of disposable income, and my idea of a relaxing vacation is closer to scrambling around mountains than playing marathon games of bridge. Yet I had a lovely time onboard the Silver Cloud ‘s recent South American sailing, and my fellow cruisers raved about the cruise line and swore they’d never go back to a big ship again.

Would I shell out thousands of dollars to sail on Silversea again? Probably not. Should you? Perhaps. The Silversea concept may appeal to you if:

  • you want a truly relaxing vacation
  • you value excellent service and a small-ship, all-inclusive experience
  • you prefer a large stateroom and luxury amenities
  • you’re content with a leisurely port experience that just skims the surface of a destination
  • you’re middle-aged or older, or are quite happy to socialize with people who are

You might not prefer a Silversea cruise if:

  • you’re an independent traveler who likes constant activity
  • you prefer an active port experience or want to really get to know a destination
  • you don’t like dressing up for leisurely dinners
  • you’re young, have children, or prefer to socialize with young people
  • you’re on a tight budget

Silversea scored high points in certain categories but failed to meet my expectations in a few areas. I’ve outlined the highlights and lowlights so you can decide whether a Silversea cruise sounds like your dream vacation… or someone else’s.

Onboard amenities

The first thing you notice is your stateroom. The smallest cabin on the Silver Cloud is still a suite, with a sleeping area, sitting area, large-for-a-ship bathroom with a tub, and a walk-in closet. Despite the fact we were two tall women and mother-daughter to boot, we never got in each other’s way in that spacious cabin. The beds were comfy, and we even had a choice of four kinds of pillows.

The Cloud has a bar, a lounge, a library, a spa/salon, an Internet cafe, a store, a gym, a show lounge, and a pool. But just one of each, unlike today’s megaships. These common areas were tastefully decorated and for the most part served our needs. I was, however, disappointed with the gym, which is situated in a converted observation deck. The machines are mostly European and unfamiliar to American travelers (how many kilometers is a mile?), and once on the treadmill I was too tall to see out the picture window. (Silversea’s newer ships, the Silver Whisper and Silver Shadow , reportedly have better workout areas.) All fitness classes were free, which is a big bonus compared to other lines that charge. But, my guess is many of Silversea’s guests aren’t as concerned about the gym facilities as I was.

I spent three full days at sea on my cruise. I passed the time playing two rounds of trivia games each day, learning ballroom dancing, attending the occasional lecture, and becoming addicted to Sudoku puzzles. The most popular onboard activity was bridge, with lessons and tournaments full of first-time and expert players. The afternoon golf-putting competition was also a favorite for many.

As an energetic twentysomething, I would have preferred a little more daily excitement. Or at least better weather, so I could have soaked up the sun or splashed in the pool. But many of my cruisemates enjoyed the downtime, perhaps because they wanted a break from their hectic lives or because they prefer to take things slow. Or maybe they just really like bridge.

The one unexpected bright side to the slow schedule (and probably the best part of the cruise itself) is that you really get to know the other cruise guests. My mother and I quickly became a part of regular trivia teams; everyone knew our names and would call us out of other activities if they ran late. Had we been hopping from activity to activity or hiding behind a book poolside, we never would have met as many interesting people.

Evening activities were also fairly limited. The Silversea production company and several guest entertainers put on one performance of one show each night. If you lingered over dinner, you’d miss it. The shows varied from excellent (including a one-man Broadway/lounge act by Simon Leigh) to mediocre (you just can’t emulate Cirque du Soleil with six people on a small stage). Aside from the show, you could drink and dance in the bar or drink and listen to the pianist in the lounge. If you love meeting new people over a gin and tonic night after night, a Silversea cruise is for you.

My favorite part of a cruise is always the shore excursions. Silversea ran its trips well; I always knew when and where to meet my tour, we didn’t waste time at schlocky souvenir stores, and the guides were excellent. We got to do unique things like taste wines at a Uruguayan winery and visit the penguins in the Falkland Islands. The tours were not geared for a very active group, so the promised 40-minute hike in Torres del Paine national park turned out to be a brief walk to a waterfall after they’d liquored us up at lunch. The rest of the 11-hour day was spent on a bus with several photo and food stops. While I would have liked to have spent at least an hour tramping on a trail, I understood that many of the other travelers could not have managed it, even before the Chilean brandy.

We were also told by other cruisers that Silversea’s excursions are overpriced, and several travelers opted to arrange their own tours for less money. The upside to booking a Silversea tour is that when you arrive late to the pier (like our national park trip), the ship is still waiting for you, and the staff is standing in the ship’s lobby with wine and fresh towels. However, in many ports, you can walk or take Silversea’s complimentary shuttle to the center of town and easily explore on your own.

Food and wine

I admit to being a budding foodie and had high hopes for Silversea’s gourmet cuisine. I can report, however, that the food varies in quality. The chefs do their best to present interesting dishes that always look beautiful on the plate. Some dishes had me raving, while others were simply mediocre. The desserts were almost uniformly disappointing, but suddenly got much better on the last few days of the cruise, especially at the special galley buffet. And you can bet that as my mother and I are experienced chocoholics, we tried as many of the sweets as possible.

The theme dinners in the Terrace Cafe were excellent, and the cafe provides a more intimate dining experience than the main restaurant. The Italian menu we tried was one of my favorite meals of the week. The most disappointing meals I had were at the cafe’s lunch buffet; I much preferred to eat at the poolside grill when it was open on nice days. The Cloud also has a small specialty restaurant called Saletta devoted to wine-and-food pairing, but the menu never appealed to us and we heard from other guests that the food was so-so. The best-kept secret is breakfast in the lounge; it’s advertised as a coffee hour but they also serve tea, juice, pastries, and hot breakfast items. Afternoon tea is also quite good—if you feel you can eat again by 4 p.m.

Would-be cruisers should also be alerted to the pace of the dinners. Even when we got to dinner just as the restaurant opened at 7:30, we would invariably be rushing to make the 10:15 show. If you relish leisurely dinners with good company, you will love Silversea. I would have preferred an alternate dining venue for those nights when I wasn’t up for a three-hour dinner, but there is none; we ordered room service the night we were exhausted and couldn’t bear a long dinner.

The best part of the onboard food-and-beverage service was that it was all included in the cruise fare (with the exception of wine purchased at Saletta). We could order room service without worrying about the extra cost, we could have wine with dinner (or before dinner, or after dinner…) without being concerned about our budget, and we could try anything, knowing if we didn’t like it, we didn’t have to finish it. It made for a relaxing and carefree atmosphere onboard.

Silversea prides itself on its excellent service, and you certainly get a lot of service for your money. I was grateful the maitre d’ remembered I’m a vegetarian, that housekeeping turned down my bed and left chocolates every evening, and that someone would fill our in-room fridge with any kind of beverage we asked for. I heard stories from other cruisemates about service that went above and beyond: the chef planned a special dinner for a wine aficionado guest and his invitees, creating a menu to go with the wines the guest picked out; and one couple’s room attendant came on duty 15 minutes early to help with a cocktail party they were organizing in their stateroom. You most likely won’t find service like that if you book a normal stateroom on a megaship.

On the flip side, I don’t need to be formally seated to eat at a buffet, and I certainly don’t need someone to carry my plate for me. I prefer to be left alone, but guests that aren’t as mobile as I am might appreciate the extra help. And sometimes, it’s just nice to be pampered for a change.

Worth your money?

Is the Silversea experience worth its high cost? Definitely—if a relaxing, pampering, slow-paced sailing sounds appealing to you. If you’re looking for a more adventurous or independent trip, you wouldn’t be spending your travel budget wisely even if the cruise cost a few hundred, rather than a few thousand, dollars. A cruise that can fulfill all your requirements for a dream vacation is worth every penny; if you can’t justify the expense, you should look elsewhere for your next getaway.

Silversea Broadens Pricing Structure

  • March 19, 2024

Silver Nova

Silversea has broadened its pricing structure to include three fare options, catering for guests’ varied preferences, according to a press release from the company.

Complementing its popular Door-to-Door all-inclusive fare, which provides guests with a journey that starts and ends at their homes, Silversea has enhanced its Port-to-Port all-inclusive fare, which is now available on all voyages.

Now included in Silversea’s Fare Guarantee program, the Port-to-Port fare will henceforth be eligible for the same promotions and savings as the Door-to-Door fare. Moreover, Silversea has introduced a new voyage-only Essential fare for time-pushed guests seeking experiential flexibility, the company siad.

“We are delighted to offer our guests a broadened pricing structure to accommodate a more diverse array of preferences, providing the luxury of choice,” said Roberto Verdino, Silversea’s SVP of Revenue Management. “We believe choice is at the heart of true luxury. Enjoying a more customized range of pricing options, guests can tailor their experience by opting for our Door-to-Door, Port-to-Port or Essential fare, while still benefitting from the superlative service and the other hallmarks of luxury that they have come to expect from Silversea.”

The three fares include:

  • Door-to-Door All-Inclusive Fare: Featuring a price guarantee, The Door-to-Door all-inclusive fare encompasses private executive transfers between home and airport, international flights with Business Class upgrades available at reduced rates, shore excursions and more.
  • Port-to-Port All-Inclusive Fare: A recently enhanced option, the Port-to-Port all-inclusive fare has been expanded to include all voyages, and provides an ideal choice for those who prefer to make independent pre- and post-cruise travel arrangements, but still want shore excursions included. As well as benefitting from the Fare Guarantee program, guests sailing on Silversea’s Port-to-Port fares will now be able to benefit from the same promotions and savings as those sailing on Door-to-Door fares.
  • Essential Fare: Silversea’s new value-rich, voyage-only fare option features all onboard inclusive amenities and services on a selection of soon-to-depart voyages, while offering guests the flexibility to arrange their own air, transfers and shore experiences according to their schedule. With stricter terms and conditions, the time-sensitive Essential fare does not include shore excursions on ocean-going voyages, yet includes shore excursions, expedition gear, and charter flights when booked for expedition voyages.

Consider these luxury cruise lines for your next trip.

Amanda Teague

Setting sail on a luxury cruise is a dreamy escape that promises comfort, indulgence, and adventure. From extravagant amenities and world-class cuisine to personalized service and gorgeous destinations, the best luxury cruise lines redefine the notion of a vacation at sea. The benefits of taking a luxury cruise

The best luxury cruise lines, book a trip with one of the best luxury cruise lines today.

The difference between a luxury cruise and a regular cruise extends beyond varying price points. A regular cruise often comes with all of the standard amenities and service levels, while a luxury cruise takes the experience a step further by offering an unparalleled level of opulence and refinement. Luxury cruises often include gourmet dining experiences, unique amenities, and VIP privileges, including priority embarkation and access to exclusive events.

Additionally, luxury cruises tend to focus on an adult market, with smaller, more intimate ships that often come with spacious and elegant suites or staterooms for guests. The smaller size of these vessels allows them to visit unique places that larger commercial ships cannot.

  • Do you need a passport to go to Canada?
  • Why you need to take a cold shower after a flight
  • Do you need a passport to go on a cruise? It’s complicated

These are just a few of the best luxury cruise lines, in no particular order.

If you're planning a trip to the Bahamas, one of the first things you'll need to sort out is your travel documentation. As a U.S. citizen, you generally need to have a valid passport book or passport card to enter the Bahamas by air or sea. While it's close to the United States, it's not part of the U.S. or a U.S. territory. As such, you'll need to meet the same entry requirements as you would for any other foreign country.

What you should know before traveling to the Bahamas There are some details to keep in mind when it comes to the required travel documents for entering the Bahamas. Can you use your driver's license to go to the Bahamas? No, a driver's license alone is not sufficient for entry into the Bahamas. Even though the Bahamas is a relatively short distance from the U.S., you'll still need to present a valid U.S. passport book or passport card when arriving by air or sea.

Jamaica offers an eclectic experience for the modern traveler. As the recognized birthplace of reggae, the island country lets you hang loose and feel the beat. Natural wonders like the Luminous Lagoon dazzle the senses. Unique, flavorful cuisines like rich stews and fresh seafood entice and satisfy. But first, you have to get there.

Typically, traveling to another country requires a passport. But if you're new to the island nation, you might wonder — do you need a passport to go to Jamaica? Here’s what you need to travel there and back so you can experience an island nation like nothing else.

How Much Does an Alaska Cruise Cost in 2024?

I f you're planning a cruise to Alaska this year, you may be enticed by low prices (in the hundreds) for a weeklong cruise. However, it's important to know that those fares are just the beginning of the cost for the entire trip.

Typically, the lowest advertised prices with mainstream cruise lines don't include taxes and port fees, specialty dining costs, alcoholic or nonalcoholic drinks, shore excursions , Wi-Fi access, gratuities and other expenses. On top of that, bargain fares usually refer to inside cabins with no windows. In a picturesque, bucket list destination like Alaska, you will realistically want a room with a private balcony so you can take in the spectacular scenery from the comfort of your room.

When to cruise to Alaska depends on what you're interested in seeing and doing during your vacation , but summer is typically the best time to visit The Great Land. Between mid-May and mid-July, you can experience 24 hours of daylight. This period is also an optimal time for wildlife viewing; you can see bears feasting on salmon, humpback whales and orcas, furry baby moose and thousands of nesting bald eagles. Cruise lines often reserve their lowest prices for sailings early or late in the Alaska cruising season , but it's still possible to find deals in the middle of the summer.

With all of this in mind, we've listed both the lowest interior cabin fares and the average total costs for a balcony stateroom across eight popular cruise lines for weeklong itineraries in June 2024. (Note: All fares quoted are per person, double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Prices were accurate at the time of writing.)

Holland America Line

Holland America Line's 2024 Alaska season extends from April to September; in 2024, there are more than 60 cruise-only voyages and cruisetours (combined land and sea packages). With the exception of one 28-day journey, itineraries range from seven to 18 days.

Average starting price (per person)

This June, Holland America 's lowest-priced itinerary is the 7-Day Glacier Discovery Southbound voyage departing from Whittier, Alaska, on June 23, 2024, aboard Nieuw Amsterdam . The voyage features scenic cruising in Hubbard Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and the Inside Passage. You'll also stop in the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, before disembarking in Vancouver, British Columbia . The starting price is $409 per person for an inside cabin, and veranda staterooms start at $2,114 per person (cruise-only fare).

Starting price (per person)

For this sailing, there is a $291 charge per person for taxes, fees and port expenses. Specialty dining, alcoholic drinks (and many nonalcoholic beverages, such as bottled water and specialty coffees), excursions, Wi-Fi access, gratuities and some other amenities cost extra.

Instead of paying for these extras individually, you can book Holland America's "Have It All" package. It covers one dinner at a specialty restaurant; one shore excursion (up to $100 per guest); a signature beverage package (for drinks up to $11 each) and a Wi-Fi package. For a limited time, you can also receive a $200 onboard credit per stateroom. A veranda stateroom plus the package starts at $2,569 per person.

If you purchase the "Have It All" package with the veranda stateroom, select the location of your cabin yourself (an additional $90), add in the port taxes and fees ($291) and include crew gratuities at $17 per guest, per day for non-suite staterooms ($119), the total cost is about $3,000 per person. You'll still need to budget for drinks that cost more than $11 each; bottles of wine with dinner; additional evenings of specialty dining; other shore excursions and miscellaneous expenses.

Total cost: From $3,069 per person

Princess Cruises

Princess is offering 14 unique itineraries and 68 cruisetours during the 2024 Alaska season, which runs from May to September. Itineraries range from a seven-day cruise to a 17-day escorted cruisetour.

Princess's lowest-priced cruise in June is the 7-Day Voyage of the Glaciers with Glacier Bay (Northbound) from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Anchorage (Whittier), Alaska , on Grand Princess. Embarking on June 5, 2024, the sailing includes scenic cruising in College Fjord and Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, a day at sea and stops in the coastal towns of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway in Alaska. Interior cabins start at $448 per person, while staterooms with a balcony start at $1,698 per person. If you select your own balcony stateroom (instead of letting the cruise line place you), the cost is $1,791 per person.

Additional fees (taxes, gratuities, etc.)

Taxes, fees and port expenses for this cruise will run you $284 per person. At the $1,791 rate, you will be in the Princess Standard fare class, which includes the ships' complimentary dining venues, entertainment and the MedallionClass experience.

You can upgrade to Princess Plus (starting at $2,211 for a balcony room) to add Wi-Fi access (one device per guest); gratuities; a beverage package (covering drinks up to $15 each); two fitness classes per cruise; two premium desserts per day; two casual dining meals and more. For additional amenities, such as Wi-Fi access for up to four devices per guest; a higher-level beverage package (for drinks up to $20 each); two specialty dining meals per guest; unlimited exercise classes and more, opt for the Princess Premier package. Balcony rooms under this category start at $2,351 per guest.

If you purchase the Princess Premier package with the balcony room, the total cost with port taxes and fees is a little more than $2,600 per person – and the pricing is nearly all-inclusive. This package may also include free cruise fare for third and fourth guests traveling in the same stateroom. You will still need to budget for shore excursions; note that over-the-top experiences like flightseeing, helicopter and dog sledding tours, and scenic rides on the historic White Pass and Yukon Route Railway can get pricey.

Total cost: From $2,635 per person

In comparison, a balcony cabin starts at $1,879 per person. The itinerary – Alaska: Hubbard Glacier & Skagway – embarks from Seward, Alaska, and includes scenic sea days cruising Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage, plus stops in the ports of Icy Strait Point, Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan (Ward Cove) in Alaska, before disembarking in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The line's ongoing "Free At Sea" deal is included in the price and features an unlimited open bar, free specialty dining (up to $180 for the first two guests in the stateroom), a discount of $50 per excursion and complimentary Wi-Fi access (a savings of up to $200).

Bottom line

The low base fares for Alaska cruises on larger cruise lines may grab your attention, but as you click through to see what's included and make your booking, you'll find additional costs on nearly every page.

Before making a reservation, be sure to read the fine print and find out exactly what's included (and not included) in your cruise fare. You may find that booking an all-inclusive rate with a luxury line offers a better value – an option that you may never have considered unless you compared the total price of each cruise.
