Upon arrival, head to the river to enjoy a  cruise on a traditional felucca boat  to see the Nile Falls. Watch life along the Nile as you travel along the river. Afterwards, continue to the  Granite Quarry,  home to an unfinished ancient obelisk and the  High Dam of Aswan.  Transfer to the port to board your  Nile Cruise  Boat,  your home for the next three nights. Full-board  on board. Today, if you're an early riser, you have the chance to enjoy an optional excursion to  Abu Simbel* , home to many rock-carved temples. Afterwards, we recommend to take the chance to book an optional visit to the  Island of Philae**.  A river island in the Nile where the ancient temple of the goddess Isis is located. Afterwards, navigate northwards towards Kom Ombo. Upon arrival explore the  twin Temples of Haroeris and Sobek  and see the amazing Nilometer, used to measure the rising and falling levels of the Nile, an important life source in Egypt. Later, visit a unique  Crocodile Mummy museum , home to a number of mummified crocodiles. Return to the ship and enjoy relaxing on board.  Dinner  and overnight on board.

Back on the ship, continue to  Luxor  where the ancient heart of  Thebes  awaits you. Here, discover the  Temple of Luxor , constructed by the two great pharaohs, Amenhotep II and Ramses II. Return to the ship.  Dinner  and overnight on board.

Temple of Edfu & Luxor Highlights Tour

Breakfast  on board. Continue your discovery of the ancient city of Thebes today as you head to the world-famous  Valley of the Kings*,  where the tomb of Tutankhamon was discovered, revealing the riches of the ancient pharaohs. It is here that the most powerful and influential kings of Ancient Egypt were buried. After exploring the site, continue to the  Temple of Hatshepsut , an imposing terraced structure, located below towering cliffs. Day 1: Arrive in Cairo

Arrive at Cairo Airport. Our meet-and-assist service will take you just before the border control, help you to go through the security area, luggage claim and customs. Then our representative will accompany you to your hotel in Cairo overlooking the Nile. 

Day 2: Grand Egyptian Museum/Giza Pyramids 

Visit the Grand Egyptian Museum , the largest museum in the world for one single civilization. You will stand face-to-face with the Golden Mask of the boy King Tutankhamun. You will be dazzled with the amount of treasures and artifacts that this museum holds.

After lunch in a local authentic restaurant, visit the Giza Pyramids , the only surviving wonder of the Seven Wonders of the World. Ride a camel out in the desert to have an amazing view for the pyramids from a distance. Then, stand in front of the imposing Sphinx , the combination of human intelligence and the strength of a lion. Enjoy your included dinner on your own in one of High End Journeys selected local restaurants. (B,L,D)

Day 3: Saqqara/Islamic Cairo

Start your day by visiting Saqqara , the necropolis of Memphis, home of the step pyramid, the first limestone structure ever built. Explore its 4350 years old colored tombs. Get the chance to go inside a pyramid and see the ancient Hieroglyphics that have been engraved on its walls for thousands of years. Your tour will include an off-beaten-track visit to  The Tomb of Mihu, The Tomb of the butchers and The Two Brothers.   

Then after lunch, visit Ibn Tulun Mosque. The oldest existing mosque in Cairo with an amazing unique design and yet still surviving in its original form. You can even climb up the minaret which provides a panoramic view of the whole old part of the city. 

Wrap up your day by walking through the old streets of Islamic Cairo ; walk in El Muizz Street which is like an open-air museum filled with medieval architectural marvels and treasures; explore the winding alleyways of the famous Khan El Khalili market, the major souk in the Islamic Cairo district (B,L)

Day 4: Luxor/Cruise

Take an early flight to Luxor and begin your luxury cruise. Visit the temple of Karnak , the largest religious complex that was ever built for a god in the history of mankind. The temple is dedicated to the god Amon Ra, the chief creator god in Ancient Egypt. During Karnak temple visit you will have an off-beaten-track visit to the Opet festival temple and the glorious temple of Khonsu , Two hidden gems that are rarely visited by travelers.

Next visit the Luxor temple that was predominantly built by Pharaoh Ramses the second.

Day 5: Luxor/Cruise

Start the day by visiting the Valley of the Kings , hidden behind the mountains on the west bank of the Nile. Enter the tomb of King Tutankhamun and stand face to face in front of his Mummy. Also, your tour will include an access to Ramses VI , one of the most colorful tombs at the King's Valley. Then have an off-beaten-track visit to Dra Abu el Naga where you will be dazzled  by the details in the tombs of Roy and shoury . Visit the temple of Hatshepsut , the only female Pharaoh who dressed and ruled Egypt like a king. Have a photo stop by the huge colossi of Memnon. After lunch, set sail up the Nile to the town of Edfu. (B, L, D)

Day 6:  Edfu/Kom Ombo/Cruise

After breakfast, On a horse and carriage you will visit the temple of Horus at Edfu , the most intact temple from the ancient world. Sail to Kom Ombo Temple dedicated to the crocodile and the falcon gods. Visit the Crocodile Mummification Museum to see crocodile mummies that are thousands of years old. (B, L, D)

Day 7: Abu Simbel/Cruise

After breakfast on-board, Drive for three hours to Abu Simbel temple on the southern border of Egypt. This site is the home of two massive rock temples dedicated to Pharaoh Ramses the second and his wife Nefertari. See the gigantic statues of the pharaoh standing for over 3200 years, flanking the entrance to one of the most impressive temples in Egypt, return back to Aswan, have lunch on-board the cruise and go afterwards for an off-beaten-track walk on the Island of Elephantine , explore the Nubian culture. End up your day on a legendary felucca sailboat ride down the Nile enjoying a sparkling wine during sunset . (B, L, D)

Day 8: Aswan/Cairo

After breakfast on-board, Disembark your Nile cruise and  enjoy a relaxing morning by visiting the Island of Philae and the temple of Isis , the goddess of love and passion in ancient Egypt afterwards take an afternoon flight to back Cairo and enjoy your last night at Le Meridien Airport Hotel.  (B)

Day 9: Cairo

After breakfast, have an easy walk back to the international terminal to travel back home with your heart filled with memories of the sights, sounds and voices of Egypt to carry with you. (B)

Welcome to Egypt, one of the world’s greatest ancient civilizations. Arrive in Cairo and transfer to your hotel with the remainder of the day at leisure or If you arrive early you may like to take get out and explore the busy streets of this city of contrasts or head out to explore Downtown Cairo and Khan al-Khalili markets. You can also enjoy extra evening dinner cruise on the Nile, or attend the spectacular sound and light show at the pyramids of Giza (both available to book locally on arrival).

Meals : Welcome Drink

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up and accompanied by your personal tour guide to visit the Pyramids of Giza, constructed between 2580 and 2560 B.C., the Egyptian pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, built in that order, are a testament to ancient planning and engineering. Your Egyptologist tour begins with a fascinating introduction to each of the three pyramids. Whilst here, you have the chance to climb inside one of the pyramids (Extra ticket on spot).

Then, drive to the pyramids Panoramic Point, where you take in all the pyramids from one spot and also to take a camel ride (additional cost). Afterwards, you will drive to visit the interior of the Valley Temple and marvel at the construction. See the Great Sphinx, the legendary statue with the head of a human and the body of a lion, amazingly carved out of one huge piece of limestone

Proceed to Memphis to discover the ruins of ancient Egypt’s capital of Egypt during the old Kingdom, founded by King Menes “3100B.C”. Now, Memphis is an open-air museum highlighted by a giant statue of Ramses II

Continue to Saqqara, a vast mortuary complex with of hundreds of tombs and the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser, the world’s oldest major stone structure. It was built in the 3rd Dynasty (around 2630 BC) for King Djoser. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant during the tour. After finished, you will be transferred to your hotel and rest of day to relax or chose an extra tour to attend the sound & light show at the pyramids of Giza area

Breakfast and then visit the Egyptian Museum, houses the world’s largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts and the treasures of the young King Tutankhamun. Your Egyptologist tour guide will introduce you to the museum’s most important pieces before you have free time to explore at leisure. Whilst here, you will have more time to visit the royal mummies hall “Extra ticket on spot”.

Then proceed to visit Mohamed Ali Alabaster Mosque in the Citadel of Salah El Din located on Mokattam hill near the center of Cairo.

Proceed to visit Coptic Cairo, explore the famed Hanging Church, a place of Orthodox worship constructed in the 3rd century. Next, see Abu Serga, known formally as Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church. This place has great significance as it is believed to be the spot where the Holy Family spent time during their journey in Egypt. Continue towards Ben Ezra synagogue, which is the reputed location of Moses’ discovery as a baby.

Continue to visit Cairo most famous Khan Al-Khalili bazaar, one of the world’s oldest marketplaces. After finished, Transfer to your hotel and free time to relax

Early morning, you will be transferred to Cairo airport for your flight from Cairo to Aswan, where you will be met, assist and transfer to visit Aswan High Dam, an engineering miracle when originally constructed in the 1960s. The dam brought an end to the Nile’s devastating floods and producing electricity

Proceed with a motor boat ride to Philae Temple Island, dedicated to the goddess Isis, located on the small Agilika Island. Also on the Island there are a temple of Hathor, Trajan’s Kiosk, a birth house (Mammisi) and various shrines and sanctuaries, after the tour enjoy free time to explore at leisure

After finished, you will be transferred to your Nile Cruise, Lunch on board. Afternoon, enjoy a relax sailing on board Nile felucca, Enjoy the peace and tranquility and let your hand glide along the Nile’s surface as you bathe in the warm Egyptian sun, weather permits!

Transfer back to your Nile Cruise & free time to relax or join the optional Nubian Village tour by a motorboat and cruise along the Nile River through the first Cataract to a Nubian village. Along the way, admire sweeping views over the river. Upon arrival, visit a traditional Nubian village in Aswan. Get an insight into the culture, history, and lifestyle of one of Africa’s oldest civilizations. Enjoy a drink at one of the colorful rural houses, nestled amongst the natural scenery. Walk through the local market to get a taste of the unique culture and traditions

Today take a very early morning trip by Vehicle to the fabulous rock-hewn temple of Abu Simbel. Cut into the rock face, this enormous structure was raised 61m to save it from floods created by the Aswan High Dam. The 20m high statues represent the great builder Ramses II and the Small temple for Queen Nefertari. Return in time for your cruise to begin and start sailing, heading north (downstream) towards Kom Ombo.

On arrival, visit Kom-Ombo Temple, the unusual double temple, dedicated to the God Sobek and Haroeris. The temple is atypical because everything is perfectly symmetrical along the main axis. The temple construction was begun by Ptolemy VI (180–145 BC). Stop to explore the nearby Crocodile museum before return to your Nile Cruise and set sail to Edfu and free time to relax

Today Morning, Start to visit the extraordinary Edfu Temple, consider one of the best preserved of all the Egyptian temples. Dedicated to the sacred falcon-headed god Horus, dating from the time of the Ptolemies (3rd -1st century BC). Return to the boat and sail on, cross Esna Lock and sail onward towards Luxor

Arriving in the late afternoon and visit the most impressive Karnak Temple, walk along the avenue of the Sphinxes and marvel at the Hypostyle Hall with its 134 columns 23 metres high and 15 metres in diameter! and then free time to explore at leisure

Continue to Luxor Temple, which marked the other end of the Avenue of Sphinx, extended between Karnak & Luxor temples. The temple was built by Amenhotep III, Ramses II, while other pharaohs like Tutankhamun, Hormohep and Alexander the great added to the Temple’s construction.

After finished, you will be transferred back to your Nile Cruise or opt for an extra Karnak sound and light show

Disembarkation after breakfast, start to discover the west bank of Luxor (ancient Thebes), your first stop is the Colossi of Memnon, two 17 metre-high statues, carved from quartzite sandstone blocks, they represent and were once part of an impressive façade of the mortuary temple of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III

Proceed to visit the Valley of the Kings on the west bank of the Nile, which contains the once hidden tombs of over 62 Pharaohs. A discreet entrance in the hillside takes the visitor underground; a series of corridors and ante-chambers leads us down to the burial chamber and sarcophagus. The walls are covered in brightly painted images and hieroglyphs – a map of the afterlife to ensure the king’s safe passage

You will visit three of the most impressive tombs, whilst here you will have time to visit the tomb of Tutankhamun (Extra ticket on spot)

Continue to visit the mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari. The only terraced temple in Egypt is set in a natural amphitheatre in the cliffs and rises out of the desert plain. This extensive temple features great ramps and courtyards and still contains beautiful reliefs on its inner walls and chapels

After finished, transfer to your hotel in Luxor and free time to relax and enjoy swimming pool

Today a spectacular hot air balloon flight over the west bank of the Nile is available this morning (expect an early start to catch sunrise as the balloon rises)

Breakfast and then drive to visit the Valley of the Nobles to visit 2 tombs well preserved tombs which provide information about daily life, religious scenes. The beauty of the Nobles tombs and vivid colored scenes also attests to the skill and creativity of the ancient Egyptian artisans

Proceed to visit Deir el-Medina (Valley of the Artisans), the place was called Set Maat “The Place of Truth”. It was home to the workmen and artisans responsible for constructing the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings.) Explore the ruins of the settlement of the village, the Ptolemaic temple, dedicated to the goddesses Hathor and Maat, consisting of a small building within a mud brick enclosure wall and two of the finest decorated tombs of Sennedjem, Inherkau

Continue to visit Madinat Habu Temple of king Ramses III, the last great warrior pharaoh of the New Kingdom (1550 – 1080 BC). The Temple is best-preserved of the New Kingdom memorial temples. It is decorated with military scenes and texts illustrating the victories of the king, as well as the rituals performed and festivals celebrated. A royal palace was attached at the south of the Temple open forecourt, while priests’ dwellings and administrative units lay on either side of the temple

After finished, transfer to Aswan airport for your flight from Luxor to Cairo. Where you will be met, assist and transfer to your hotel & free time to relax

Your time is free today for some last minute sightseeing or shopping until we transfer you to the airport for your departure flight. If you have an afternoon or evening flight departure, then a half-day tour to learn more about the evolution of pyramid building at Bent Pyramids at Dahshur and the Meidum Pyramids and more of the city this morning. Extra nights in Cairo are also available if you would like to extend your stay

At 4:15am we met a private taxi picked up from our resort for the transfer to the airport. We could easily make a flight there. Once again, a private taxi was ready for us which stayed with us both days for the various journeys through the city. The guide who accompanied us was able to tell us all the history of Egypt in Dutch. On the 1st day we were promised the pyramids, spinx and museum, so we were taken to the guest house for the overnight stay. We were very lucky with the 2nd supervisor who stayed with us in the guest house. He guided us through Cairo in the evening to get a taste of local life. Eating locally together while driving through the city in a Tuk Tuk, a truly wonderful experience. Later we had some drinks and smoked Shisha in a local café. 2nd day together with the driver, guide and supervisor, various cultural activities were provided in Cairo (Mosque, War Museum, various churches) and finally the Bazaar. After which we were taken back to the airport. What a great city Cairo is, it is truly indescribable how big, busy and hectic it is there, you have to experience that. Approx 4.5 hours later, driving through mountains and villages, we picked up our guide, Alaadin. He took us to various places and was really informative and interesting about the history of Egypt. The trip was tailored to our needs. We weren't interested in shopping. So these places were omitted. We took a trip on the Nile to Banana Island (extra charge). The growing pattern of the banana was interesting. But it was a shame seeing the crocodile and monkeys locked away in those conditions. Lunch was at an all you can eat buffet and was very tasty. Is Egypt safe to visit?

Egypt is very safe to visit and the police, tourist police, and army are in prominence wherever you go, giving you the knowledge that you are secure in your surroundings. Egypt prides itself on its high safety record for tourists and will do all it can to maintain this.

How do I get my tourist visa?

Usually you need to apply to your local Egyptian Embassy or Consulate General for a pre-entry tourist visa but if you are from North America, Western Europe, Australia/New Zealand, Brazil/Argentina or Hong Kong/Japan/Macau/Malaysia or Singapore you can get your tourist visa upon arrival in Egypt.

How do I get my tourist visa if I live in a different country to that of my passport?

If you hold a residence permit in the country you live in you can apply to the Egyptian Embassy/Consulate General in that country, otherwise you have to apply to the country that issued your passport.

I am staying in a resort in the Sinai; can I visit Cairo or Luxor?

Though many nationalities are exempt from requiring a visa for the many Sinai resorts, a full tourist visa is required if you come to any place in Egypt that lies to the west of the Red Sea/Suez Canal.

I am staying in a resort in Hurghada, can I visit Cairo or Luxor?

Though many nationalities are exempt from requiring a visa for staying in Hurghada, once you leave the confines of the town a full tourist visa is required.

I am going to visit Jordan and/or Israel; will I require a visa when coming back to Egypt?

Yes, as soon as you leave Egypt your visa will be stamped and so you will require another one. If you are from a country that can get their visa upon arrival in Egypt, you can get the new one when you re-enter the country, but if you require a pre-entry visa you should apply for 2 of these, using the second one when you re-enter Egypt.

Can my tourist visa be extended to more than one month?

A tourist visa can be extended if required. To do this you have to apply to Mogamma, in Tahrir Square, or to the equivalent offices in Alexandria, Luxor or Sharm El-Sheikh

What is the difference between a 5 star and a 5 star deluxe hotel/cruise?

The star ratings get higher as the facilities and overall standard of the accommodation gets better and so it is easier to imagine 5 star deluxe (or any suffix added to 5 star) as being 6 star

Why am I being advised to stay in a hotel close to the pyramids rather than in Downtown?

If you are only in Cairo for a few days it is a lot easier for you to see the sites starting from a base in Giza. The traffic from downtown to the pyramids can cause the journey to take over an hour, which means an early start if you want a full day’s experience, especially if you require to enter the Great Pyramid, when you have to be at the plateau before 0800. If you are in Cairo for a while, the Hotels at the Pyramids are all on a resort basis, built in acres of land with outdoor swimming pools and relaxing areas, something which Downtown hotels cannot really provide. This is why you tend to find that the Downtown hotels are built like towers; very tall and narrow, while Giza Pyramid hotels are limited in height, but cover more ground.

Cost also comes into the equation as a simple 4 star Hotel in the Downtown area is more than often more expensive than a 5 star resort in the Pyramids area. Cairo is like most major cities in the world in this regard as city centre property is a lot more expensive. Though it may appear that Downtown hotels do afford the luxury of being able to wander around the area for shopping and restaurants, etc. most of the Pyramid hotels offer free shuttle buses to allow you to do the same, plus taxis are not expensive and will still work out cheaper in the end.

What are the differences between Bed and Breakfast, half board, full board and all inclusive?

Bed and breakfast means that only breakfast is supplied. Half board means that breakfast and dinner are supplied Full board has all meals supplied (breakfast, lunch and dinner) All inclusive means that all meals and drinks are supplied; some hotels also supply alcohol. This latter point should be checked when making the booking.

Do I have to stay in my hotel after the day’s tour has ended?

No, definitely not, and we would encourage you to go out and enjoy the culture of Egypt. Many packages are full board, which tends to make people think they have to stay imprisoned in their hotel, but the sights and sounds of Cairo, especially, are too great to be missed. Why stay in the same hotel, with the same faces, when you could go out and have your dinner on a cruise boat sailing around Zamalek Island, accompanied by either a belly dancer or a Whirling Dervish; or sometimes both. This is your holiday, so enjoy every minute and get out and explore.

I have some expensive items which I do not want to leave lying in my room/cabin, what should I do?

All Hotels and Cruises have safety deposit boxes, sometimes even in your room/cabin. All you need do is ask at reception and they will give you instructions on how to use them, or will safely put away your valuables until you need them.

Where is the main bus depot in Cairo?

The main bus depot is called Cairo Gateway (El Torgoman) bus station and is situated just off the city centre. Any taxi will be able to take you there.

Where do I get the bus in Luxor?

The bus station in Luxor is situated behind the Luxor Temple.

Where do I get the bus in Hurghada?

The bus station is situated in Hurghada town centre.

Where do I get the bus in Sharm El-Sheikh?

The bus station is on the outskirts of the town on Freedom Road. You will require a taxi to get there, though many hotels do have shuttle buses which can do this.

Can I get tickets for the sleeper train service online and if not, how do I order them?

There is no online facility for this but you can order them by telephone. Call El Watania on +20225749474 or +20225749274, or fax them on +20225749074. You will be given a booking reference and you can pay and pick the tickets up at Cairo station at least 24 hours before departure.

How do I get from Hurghada to Aswan?

Many travel books mention the road and bus service between these two towns, but these are not advised for tourists and the buses will often refuse admittance. The advised route is to get the bus to Luxor and then the train to Aswan.

Can tourists use the Cairo/Luxor or Luxor/Cairo bus service?

Though these buses are air-conditioned and are good to use, tourists are advised not to and will be very lucky to either obtain a ticket or even be allowed to board the bus. This journey, for tourists, is restricted to trains or flight.

Can I just turn up at the bus station and buy a ticket?

You can, but you are advised to get your tickets at least 24 hours before travel, if possible. If you wait until the last minute you may find that you cannot get seats that are next to one another, or they may even be at separate ends of the bus. Not a good idea if you have children with you.

Can I hire a car in Cairo?

Car hire is available and many of the world’s major car hire companies are in Cairo. Car hire is NOT advised for those who have not been to Egypt before and therefore do not understand the level of driving employed by Egyptians.

Is it safe to drive in Egypt?

Unless you are used to the way that Egyptians drive, it is not advised to attempt this. Lane etiquette is unknown, cars will cut across you to make a turn, and the use of lights during the night is very seldom done. Though some road signs are in English and Arabic, the majority are in Arabic alone and there are simply not any good road maps, especially town ones.

I am on a tight budget so to save money is it okay to hitchhike between towns?

NO!! If you were to do this you could find yourself paying more for the ride than the fare by bus/train would have been.

Can I hire a bicycle to visit the West Bank at Luxor?

Yes, there are many places that will allow this but before you do so please remember a couple of very important things:

1/ as the day progresses so does the heat, so by the early afternoon it can be exceedingly uncomfortable. Do you really want to be cycling for miles in this, with very little chance of shade? This is especially important for children, who will tire a lot as the day progresses because of the heat.

2/ there are no cycle lanes and so you are sharing the roads with all other forms of vehicular traffic, which is not the best thing to experience. Many cyclists have been injured because of other road users not noticing them.

Can I get to Egypt by ferry boat from Europe?

Sadly the links between Alexandria (and Port Said) and other Mediterranean ports are not available right now due to the ongoing problems in Palestine and Israel. It is hoped that these will be resumed in the not too distant future. Commercial ferries are available, some of which carry passengers, but you would need to contact the relevant port authority for information on these.

How do I get to Abu Simbel?

Abu Simbel can be reached by flight, which is the easiest and most convenient method taking about 4 hours for the round trip and visit, or there are 2 police controlled bus convoys that leave Aswan at 0400 and 1130 that take about 9 hours for the round trip and visit.

Can I get to Esna or Kom Ombo without having to get a cruise?

You can visit either of these sites by taking the train, getting off at the relevant station and then getting a taxi, or by hiring a taxi or private driven car to take you to them (from Luxor or Aswan).

Can I get a cruise from Cairo to Luxor/Aswan?

Though movies like “Death on the Nile” show people using this cruise, it has not been possible to cover this route since the late 1990’s. Flight or train are the only ways to get from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan nowadays.

Can I go inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops)?

Yes, but ticket sales for this are restricted to 300 people per day; 150 at 0800 and the other 150 at 1500. Tickets for this can only be bought at the main entrance, not the entrance close to the Sphinx. As tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis it is advised to get to the office as soon as possible as buses will arrive at opening times and they tend to get the majority of the tickets. If you can spare the time, try for the tickets in the morning, and if you are not successful you can be first in line for the afternoon tickets.

Can I go inside the Pyramids of Khafre (Chephren) and/or Menkaure (Mycerinus)?

There is no restriction on these sales but only one of them is open at a time, they are changed to allow for them to breathe, dispersing the high levels of carbon dioxide levels that tend to accumulate inside. Tickets are available at the main entrance to the site.

Can I take photographs inside the tombs?

No, photography inside tombs, including the pyramids and Abu Simbel, is strictly forbidden, which has led to all cameras being banned from the Valley of the Kings (you have to leave all cameras at the x-ray point at the second entrance). Excessive flash damages the paintwork inside the tombs and so, because of people who ignore the rules, measures have been implemented to safeguard these ancient works of art. The simple rule of thumb when visiting sites is: no cameras inside, cameras are okay outside.

I notice that the same sites seem to be repeated in every package tour program I see, are these the only sites available for tourists to see?

Though most companies will use the same sites for their packages, this is mainly because the majority of visitors are experiencing Egypt for the first time and so these are the “must see” sites. Egypt has literally hundreds of ancient sites which can be visited and it only takes a request for them to be explored.

Do I need to take anti-malaria tablets/injections?

NO!! Malaria has not been in Egypt for well over 85 years and there is no need for any type of anti-malaria medication. To be honest, it is quite the obverse as any types of anti-malaria medication can actually cause side effects that will simply ruin your holiday. Just because Egypt is in Africa does not mean malaria is here as well.

Can I bring prescribed medication with me?

Yes, but please ensure that you only bring enough for your stay, with just a few day’s extra supply as a back-up. It would also help if you could bring the prescription as well, as proof, or for topping up (there are many pharmacies in Egypt that can do this for you). If you happen to be travelling onwards from Egypt, and so have a lot more of your prescribed medicine with you, please ensure that you do have the prescription as proof.

Is it safe to drink the water in Egypt?

Yes, but not advised! Egyptian water has a high chlorine level in it which can upset the microbes in your stomach, causing diarrhoea. For drinking purposes it is far safer to stick with bottled water, ensuring the seal is intact before drinking it.

Is it safe to brush my teeth with tap water?

Egyptian water is highly chlorinated, not poisonous, and so it is perfectly safe to do this. You often swallow small amounts of water whilst in the shower, or swimming, and this causes no problems, so why should cleaning your teeth?

How should I dress for entering a mosque (male)?

Protocol does ask for men to wear long trousers as opposed to shorts, though Egyptians are used to the latter being worn and so say nothing, or little, if it occurs.

How should I dress for entering a mosque (female)?

Protocol does ask for women to cover bare skin as much as possible and so shoulders, especially, should be covered and a simple scarf will suffice. Again, it is advised to wear long trousers, or skirts, as legs should also be covered. Heads do not need to be covered, despite what some tourist books say, though it is a sign of respect if you do this.

What clothes should I wear on the cruise?

You may wear whatever you like on-board the cruise but you are asked to dress for dinner. Casual but neat is acceptable, you do not have to dress formally. Swimwear is not acceptable.

What clothes should I wear walking around towns?

When walking around the towns, dress as you would for a hot summer’s day back home. Shorts and t-shirts are actually worn by many locals.

What clothes should I wear when visiting sites?

This really depends on which site you are visiting and at what time of the day. Some offer little shade and so you should ensure that you do not have too much skin available for the sun to burn (the Giza Pyramids, in the afternoon, is a prime example of this). Temples are well shaded so you do not have to cover so much, but remember that even though they are shaded well, tombs tend to accumulate the heat from the sun as well as the many visitors, so try to wear something lightweight in them, especially cotton fabrics. Though many people like to wear open toed sandals, please note that many of the floors are exceedingly uneven and so it can be easy to stub your toes. Ladies, please do not wear high heels; not only can you easily break them, they can also become trapped between the large stones in flooring, and you will also find you will tend to slip and slide on the stone. High heels and sand are not the best partners either as the heels will sink in (you may laugh, but many ladies do insist in wearing high heels).

Is it safe for women to travel alone?

Many women travel alone and have found that they have been safe. The police, tourist police and army are always close by and the Egyptians themselves are generally safe and will try to protect solo travellers. On the whole, it is generally safer for a solo female traveller in Egypt than places like Greece, Italy or Spain.

Although the chances of being confronted are almost negligible, please ensure that you take the same precautions that you would anywhere else and do not be tempted to walk in deserted areas alone: get a taxi back to your abode! You may receive some invitations, which on the whole are innocent, do not accept any of these from strangers.

Do women have to cover arms/shoulders/legs when walking around the cities/towns?

This is a tourist book fallacy. Women walking around these towns can do so as if they were walking around their home towns in the summer. You will be amazed at how many of the local women dress like this as well, looking more like tourists than Egyptian.

Can I use my credit/debit cards easily?

Yes. Most places accept these nowadays, including all decent Hotels and Cruises. You are advised to carry cash when shopping in the many street markets (souks) though the larger malls, and street shops, can accept plastic.

Are there plenty of ATM’s?

Almost every bank has an ATM outside it, or just inside the front doors, and you will normally find that they are guarded by a policeman. Many shopping malls have stand-alone ATM’s and you can also find them located along a busy pavement (sidewalk), or where two busy pavements meet. Airports and railway stations also have ATM’s as do the larger tour company offices.

What voltage does Egypt have, and what kind of plugs?

Egypt has a voltage supply of 220V and the plugs are the 2 round pin type that are common throughout Europe (except the UK).

Can you purchase alcohol in Egypt?

Yes, alcohol is available in Egypt, either in the better hotels, higher class restaurants and cafes, pubs, and beer gardens. You will also find off licences as well. Please note though, it is illegal to drink alcohol in the streets in Egypt, so do not walk around with a can of your favourite tipple.

Are there restrictions about bringing alcohol into the country?

Yes, you are only allowed to bring in 2 litres with you.

What is the legal drinking age in Egypt?

The legal drinking age is 21.

Welcome to Egypt! On arrival in Cairo you will be met and assisted at the airport. Transfer to your hotel and check in. Overnight in Cairo.

Breakfast at the hotel then we start a full day tour to the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx, then we will have lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon we will visit Sakkara, where the most ancient manmade pyramid is, the pyramid of King Zoser. Back to your hotel, dinner is on your own. You can try the hotel restaurant or ask your guide or the hotel concierge for recommendations of restaurants you might like to try. Overnight in Cairo. B/L

Breakfast at the hotel, then we drive to visit the Citadel of Salah Eddine and the mosque of Mohamed Ali. Afterwards we will visit the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square to visit and enjoy the most famous masterpieces of the Kings and Queens of Egypt including the King Tutankhamun collection. If the new Grand Egyptian Museum is open next to the Pyramids, we will visit that one instead. Lunch at a local restaurant then we return to the hotel, dinner is on your own. Overnight in Cairo. B/L

Cairo - Luxor

Breakfast at the hotel, check out and drive to Cairo airport to fly to Luxor (1 hour flight). Arrive in Luxor where you will be met and assisted at the airport and transferred to your 5-star deluxe cruise ship to check in and have lunch on board. At 3pm depart with your guide to visit Karnak and Luxor temples. Return to the ship for dinner on board and overnight in Luxor. B/L/D

Luxor - Esna

Breakfast on board the ship then we start with visits to Valley of the Kings, Temple of Queen Hatshepsut and Colossi of Memnon. Back to the ship for lunch. The ship starts sailing south towards Esna to pass through the locks. Dinner on board and overnight in Esna. B/L/D

Esna - Kom Ombo

Breakfast on board then we leave the ship to visit the Edfu temple dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god. Back to the ship and sail to Kom Ombo. Lunch on board and in the afternoon we visit the temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to Sobek the crocodile-headed god. Back to the ship. Dinner and overnight on board at Kom Ombo. B/L/D

Kom Ombo - Aswan

Breakfast on board and we start our visits to the High Dam and to the temple of Philae dedicated to Isis, the goddess of Love and Magic. Back to the ship for lunch and in the afternoon we take a felucca ride on the Nile around the Nubian islands and botanical gardens. Back to the ship, dinner on board and overnight in Aswan. B/L/D

Aswan - Cairo

Breakfast on board the ship and check out (optional trip to Abu Simbel), and drive to the airport to fly to Cairo. Arrive in Cairo and drive to your hotel by the airport. Check in and rest of the day free on your own. Overnight in Cairo. B

Breakfast at the hotel and check out. Transfer to the international terminal to fly back home. B
