Kate Devine

There is a particular joy for a longtime Paris resident - 17 years and counting! – in returning to the place that so profoundly shaped their Parisian journey.

For me, that place is a specific street: the quiet rue de l’Abbé Grégoire, tucked behind the bustling rue de Rennes, where I once spent six weeks studying at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Five days a week in 2006, I trekked from my residence in the 13th arrondissement to Saint-Germain-des-Prés. I’d ascend from the Saint-Placide metro and come face to face with the espresso drinkers on the terrace of L’Horizon café before turning the corner and catching the familiar green glow of a Holiday Inn sign.

The Holiday Inn’s boxy, brutalist building wasn’t noteworthy save for the fact that it shared a block with my momentous first summer as a Parisian. And for years, I’d find the same reliable sight when I'd return to the area. Seventeen years later, though, that forgettable hotel has been entirely and delightfully transformed into the Hotel des Grands Voyageurs , which opened at the end of 2023. (I was happy to hear that the EQ Group, whose first Paris property, Hotel Dame des Arts , also occupies a reconverted Holiday Inn, kept on the excellent former staff as part of their hospitality team.) That this once sleepy stretch has become a destination in its own right in recent years – for dining, namely at Colorova and Quinsou – made my recent 24-hour staycation all the more compelling.

Right from the entryway, I was charmed by the handiwork of Italian interior architect Fabrizio Casiraghi, who turned what he called a “very challenging canvas” into a warm and sophisticated space that recalls the quartier’s historic art scene and the golden age of travel. There’s an unmistakable 1940s Orient Express-meets-luxury liner aesthetic throughout, a subdued residential glam that runs from the ground floor with its mahogany-paneled walls, brass accents, and coffered ceilings to 138 guest rooms.

“The format of the building, with its long corridors upstairs and standardized rooms, pushed me to create something a bit bold right from the entrance,” explained the Milanese designer. “One way to do that was through the design scheme and the use of art." You'll see Osanna Visconti's cast-bronze Foglie leaves on lobby mirrors flanked by Gustav Klimt lithographs, while talented Parisian sculptor François Gilles made the framed bas reliefs above each bed.

That harmonious mix of old-world style and contemporary comforts, on top of soft lighting wherever I went, made it easy to slip into relaxation mode – and that's by design, according to general manager Delphine Bao. “This residential setting creates a more intimate and personalized atmosphere,” Bao said. On top of that, she added, the location offers a different kind of experience, “a glimpse of local life with bustling markets, charming cafés, and a community spirit.”

Going about it as a local (which I am, full-time, but on the right bank) is precisely what my husband and I intended to do.

After freshening up, peering out my 5th-floor window to catch the dusty pink winter sunset, and kicking back with a cup of tea, we strolled the neighborhood. We stopped into Le Visionnaire to try on some sunglasses, took a spin through Le Bon Marché, only a five-minute walk away, and folded into local nightlife with an apéro at Sauvage Cave before posting up for a leisurely, candlelit dinner at the hotel restaurant. The concept of a grand voyage bore out on a transatlantic menu of comforts featuring a Suprême de Volaille with perfectly crisp fries, a New York-style strip steak, and a baked Alaska for dessert. Fully sated, it was time to luxuriate in a hot shower with Diptyque bath products and fall into bed.

Here, a look at what else there is to love about the Hotel des Grands Voyageurs.

Hotel des Grands Voyageurs

  • Chic, old-world residential design goes a long way toward making this feel like a true pied-à-terre and part of the neighborhood's fabric.
  • A food and beverage program you’ll actually want to try — from the Poppy, a speakeasy cocktail bar, to the ‘transatlantic’ brasserie.
  • The fitness room with state-of-the-art equipment and artistic touches that create design continuity with the rest of the property.
  • A quiet but well-situated location between the Montparnasse train station and the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, putting guests only a short walk from the Bon Marché and top left-bank restaurants.

The 138 rooms are divided into five categories, all bearing the same design aesthetic, which is minimalist and extremely comfortable. They all have pleated moldings, wooden headboards, leather-covered bedside tables, framed bas reliefs above the bed, cotton sateen sheets, and Diptyque amenities. Where the ground floor is moody, rooms benefit from a light color palette and excellent natural light.

Top category rooms have a few extra flourishes, like a record player and a selection of vinyls. I stayed in a Signature Queen Room, one of the two categories targeted at solo travelers or couples on a short stay. Though no bigger than 183 square feet, the space was smartly laid out — no corner wasted, no superfluous decorative detail, but enough room to slip in a mid-century armchair that made a comfortable perch for window gazing. It’s clear that Casiraghi considered each room's utility and how guests would navigate them — unlike other Parisian properties that have recently opened, they were not a canvas to flex his decorative whims. One disappointment was the lack of a minibar with wine, soft drinks, and snacks (beyond complimentary still and sparkling water). Only Deluxe rooms and Junior Suites have fully-stocked minibars, with snacks sourced from La Grande Epicerie, Le Bon Marché department store’s massive food emporium in the neighborhood.

The on-site restaurant sits within the continuation of the lobby and horseshoe-shaped bar area, with the same plush furnishings, sconce lighting, and sexy moodiness. “Transatlantic” is the abiding theme of the menu — a mix of French and North American bistro classics with a twist. Instead of a blanquette de veau, the chef used cod fish. Mussels take the place of sole with the marinière sauce. And for smaller appetites, the “snacks” (which are plenty generous) are nostalgic American comforts like grilled cheese and tomato soup or a yuzu mayonnaise-dressed lobster roll with fries. With a relatively short menu, it’s not where you’d dine each night of your stay, but it delivers a lovely single meal. (Unfortunately, Poppy, the hotel’s speakeasy bar that looked plucked from the set of Mad Men , wasn’t yet open to the public during my stay but is pitched as a destination for locals — only time will tell.)

Activities and Amenities

The fitness area could be called small but mighty — the room houses sleek NOHrD wooden machines and its delightful decorative details like soothing sconce lighting (no ghastly spotlights to be found!), machines laid out on a vintage rug, colorful wall tiles, and two original painted frescoes by the young Italian artist Assia Pallavicino — a kind of tongue-in-cheek depiction of Roman-era athletes that smack of the mosaics inside the Foro Italico swimming complex in Rome. There’s also an infrared sauna that fits two at a time, but no dedicated spa. This shouldn’t feel like a loss, though — guests are here to have a comfortable home base to explore the city.  If desired, however, they can request an in-room massage (for a fee, of course). The hotel can make recommendations or arrange guided tours for activities off-property but does not have a full-service concierge offering.

Family-Friendly Offerings

Several connecting rooms make traveling as a family seamless and comfortable.

Accessibility and Sustainability

One of the benefits of occupying a more modern structure in Paris is greater accessibility. The entrance and all public spaces are accessible, while four guest rooms, accessible by elevator, are adapted for reduced mobility needs. The hotel also limits single-use plastic and sources all kitchen ingredients as locally as possible.

In a quiet stretch between the Montparnasse train station and Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the hotel is an ideal home base for exploring and shopping (Le Bon Marché, one of the city’s destination department stores in a short walk away, but indie shops and luxury boutiques abound, in the neighborhood), and dining — all on foot. The Luxembourg Gardens are located within a 10-minute stroll, while the sculpted masterpieces of Rodin are no further than 20. And if you’re staying over a weekend, it’s worth waking up to hit the Raspail organic open-air market on Sunday for picnic provisions; it's just a block away.

How to Get the Most Value Out of Your Stay

The property is part of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts collection which means members can use points to book rooms, benefit from preferential room rates, access upgrades, and priority early check-in. Room rates start from $327 per night.

Le Grand Voyage

The long and winding road

T he annual hajj to Mecca, when 2 million pilgrims converge on Islam's holiest shrine, has been captured in documentaries. But no feature film had been allowed to film in the sacred Saudi city until French director Ismaël Ferroukhi shot his debut feature, Le Grand Voyage. "No one looked at the camera," he says in amazement. "People didn't even seem to see the crew - they're in another world."

Ferroukhi, 43, wanted to tell the story of a father and son who "live under the same roof but don't speak the same language, or know each other", a story that in spirit mirrors his own. As a child growing up in Crest, a village in the south of France to which his parents had migrated from Morocco when he was three, he had been captivated by his own father's pilgrimage to Mecca by car.

In Ferroukhi's road movie, Reda is torn from school in southern France just before final exams, and from his girlfriend Lisa, to drive his ageing and autocratic father on the hajj. But as their sky-blue estate car (with an odd orange door) crosses 10 countries - through Bulgarian snows and Syrian desert - the two are forced to reckon with each other. "I thought if I could lock up two characters for 3,000 miles, they'd have to communicate," Ferroukhi says. The father cruelly bins Reda's mobile phone, and this marks the forced opening of dialogue. Sullen resentment turns to respect and, ultimately, love.

Released in France last year, Le Grand Voyage played in cinemas for six months simply on word of mouth. It won the 2004 Luigi de Laurentiis award at Venice, and went to film festivals from Belgium to Argentina. More than 4,000 people watched it on a giant screen in Marrakech's Djemaa el Fna square, with "tourists and everybody, some who had never been in a cinema, mixing in the crowd".

The director, whose own looks would lend themselves to a Bollywood hero, now lives in Paris. He made his first short film only in his 30s, using people from his village. He wrote his second, L'Inconnu (1996), for Catherine Deneuve, who admired the script in a TV scheme to team young directors with screen stars. Gamely splicing English with French, he says he wrote the screenplay for Le Grand Voyage in 1998, and it took five years, with the aid of producer Humbert Balsan, to secure less than a third of the target budget. Yet with only 1m euros (about £700,000), "one Super 16 camera and no lights", he sought permission to shoot the final scenes in Mecca. "I thought, if I can shoot in Mecca, I do the movie; if I can't, I don't."

He sent the script to the Saudi ambassador in Paris, who secured visas for a crew of four - all of whom had to be Muslim. But on arrival, "they said the authorisation was no good. Mecca is like the Vatican." The five-day hajj was already under way. "For three days we waited, then they gave us a permit to shoot a long way from the great mosque. Little by little, I came nearer." He spliced these shots with scenes later filmed with the actors in Morocco. He also shot hard-to-get footage from above of white-clad pilgrims thronging the inner terraces of the mosque. "They gave me a bad place on a hotel roof, with an air conditioner," he recalls. "I found a tiny angle - there was no margin at all."

Filming the journey proved as uncertain. They hit a curfew in Serbia in 2003 after the prime minister was assassinated ("we were arrested several times"). The Iraq war broke out as they crossed into Turkey. "It was difficult. For me, all war is criminal. But, though it's selfish, I tried to focus only on the movie," which he wanted to be "timeless - only about everyday life". He became as single-minded as a hajji. Just as Reda yearns to linger in Milan while his father snaps, "we're not tourists", the crew "kept pointing out beautiful scenes, but I only cared about what the characters were feeling. I changed nothing. The script was very subtle, so you can't improvise."

The dialogue in Le Grand Voyage is notable for its gaps. The father will speak only Maghrebi Arabic, while Reda replies stubbornly in French. "There are differences between generations everywhere in the world," says Ferroukhi, "but when you live in another country, the gap widens." It becomes a film about language and communication across gulfs of faith, culture and generation, between migrant and second-generation beurs, orthodox and non-believer.

"I was trying to make silence eloquent, because the deepest things are conveyed without words," Ferroukhi says. He was aided by compelling performances from Nicolas Cazalé, a French actor of Algerian descent with the brooding charm and vulnerability of a young Brando, and veteran Moroccan actor Mohamed Majd, who comes volubly into his own in the Middle East. While there are many comic moments, the moving climax in Mecca is crucial to Reda's understanding of his father's beliefs, and of his own connection to a succouring and humanist global faith.

Ferroukhi, who describes himself as culturally Muslim, sees the film as about spirituality rather than religion; "about what's behind appearances, and how to break down barriers". But he also sought to "rehumanise a community smeared by an extreme minority using religion for political ends". At an interfaith screening in London, organised by the St Ethelberger's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace, he was asked if he anticipated hostility from conservative Muslims, a question that a self-professed "conservative imam" in the audience found bewildering, since he was delighted by the film. It shows a range of devout and secular Muslims, but no violent Islamists.

"I wanted to show what I know of Islam," says Ferroukhi. The media "speak of 1 per cent of sick people as if they represent all Muslims, which is humiliating for the rest." It is also "dangerous for the youth who don't trust or listen to their parents, and can identify Islam with those images of death". While tensions persist in France over the ban on headscarves in schools ("I'm against the stupid law"), and Turkey's prospective EU membership, Ferroukhi insists: "Islam is already in Europe. It needs to be accepted for what it is. Turkey belongs to Europe, like it or not. It's a bridge to Asia and other cultures, and without bridges there's no dialogue."

For him, the film became a mission. "I gave up everything to make it - except what really mattered." The sacrifice was compounded when the producer, Balsan, committed suicide in February, according to Ferroukhi, in despair at debts. The director is fighting on to have the film released in Arab countries, where it has been seen only at festivals. "Everywhere in the world, people say, 'It's my story - I had the same thing with my father.' It's a great compliment." He says he was moved by a screening at a prison near Lille, where most inmates are of north African descent - many, Ferroukhi argues, unfairly inside for trivial offences. "Some turn to religion in prison because it's their last resource." Yet in the discussion afterwards, inmates opened up about their families out of trust for the director. "I'm self-taught - that's my strength and my weakness," he says. "My influence is my culture, origin, and my life in France. I try to look inside myself."

An elderly father forces his French-born son to drive him across seven countries to visit Mecca in Ismael Ferroukhi’s first theatrical feature “Le Grand Voyage.” Winner of the Luigi De Laurentiis award for best first film in Venice, this sensitively directed road movie about two generations learning to understand each other has topical value in the way it respectfully describes different approaches to being Islamic, belittling neither religious nor lay views. Brushed by gentle humor, the story is too predictable to excite major commercial attention, but critical support could help pic jump out of festivals and onto arthouse screens.

The last thing Reda (Nicolas Cazale), a non-religious youth of Moroccan descent, wants to do is take time off high school. But he turns out to be the only member of the family able to drive his benignly despotic pere (Mohamed Majd) to Saudi Arabia to pay a visit to Mecca, an obligatory trip for every good Muslim who can afford it. Why father doesn’t simply take a plane is a question Reda himself raises; his answer is that the pilgrimage should be as arduous a journey as possible to show the believer’s faith.

Popular on Variety

And so it proves to be. In a beat-up car with just enough cash to cover expenses, they start off on a long and sometimes harrowing journey.

That Reda and father have different ideas is clear from the start. Speeding down the highway, the boy keeps trying to call his French girlfriend until dad throws his cell phone away. This occasions the first of many scenes where the two lock horns — which the father always wins by reverting to an authoritarian wall of silence.

The biggest disaster occurs when they pick up a Turkish man (Jacky Nercessian) who claims he, too, desires to make the pilgrimage of a lifetime, but he turns out to have quite another agenda.

Staid as scripting is up to this point, the film takes wings as the pair reach the desert and their goal comes into sight. Caravans of pilgrims offer them help and solidarity. For the first time, it’s Reda who’s the odd man out among the masses of believers flocking to the holy site.

Ending comes as no surprise, yet in Ferroukhi’s sensitive treatment, it has real emotional resonance as it reaches for quasi-mystical lyricism.

Cazale’s anger and resentment as the heel-dragging teenage son who doesn’t know Arabic or the Koran and barely understands his father’s Moroccan dialect anchor the action in a p.o.v. Western viewers can identify with. Veteran thesp Majd fleshes the father out beyond simple dignity to include stubborn contrariness and despotism, making his fate moving.

Tech work is simple and effective.

A few weeks before his college entrance exams, Reda, a young man who lives in the south of France, finds himself forced to drive his father to Mecca. From the start, the journey looks to be difficult. Reda and his father have nothing in common. Talk is reduced to the strict minimum. Reda wants to experience this trip in his own way. His father demands respect for himself and the meaning of this pilgrimage. As they drive through different countries and meet various people, Reda and his father observe each other warily. How can they create a relationship when communication is impossible? From the south of France, through Italy, Serbia, Turkey, Syria, Jordan to Saudi Arabia, their road is 3,000 miles long.

le grand voyage paris

Although not officially classified as a “Palace Hotel”, this opulent and ornate property offers quintessential Paris grandeur and is no doubt one of the Grande Dames of Parisian luxury hotels. Proudly occupying a full city block in the most prime location in the heart of Paris, The InterContinental Paris Le Grand Hôtel faces the legendary Place de l’Opéra and is a short walk from the famous Place Vendôme and the iconic Galeries Lafayette department stores. Renowned as one of the world’s grandest hotels, this historic property has borne witness to many important events and has hosted international royalty and celebrities for over a century and a half since it was inaugurated by the Empress Eugenie (wife of Napolean III) in 1862.

Many of this luxury hotel’s 470 sumptuous and charming rooms and suites have superb birds eye views of the world-famous, gilded Palais Garnier, home to the esteemed Paris Opera, and its elaborate interiors and traditional architecture allow guests to experience the grandeur of past and present-day Paris. Gastronomic delights await at two acclaimed restaurants, Café de la Paix, a legendary Brasserie which is a veritable Parisian institution with a rich cultural history, and La Verrière, a gorgeous 800 sqm atrium restaurant set in a beautiful winter garden. The spectacularly elegant Salon Opera ballroom, is a registered historic monument and has been magnificently restored and continues its illustrious history of hosting Paris’s most exclusive social events.

The hotel’s elegant 470 rooms (starting from 25 sqm) and suites (starting from 45 sqm) feature ceiling moldings and ornate chandeliers, with Napoleon III – style furnishings such as elegant mahogany tables with bronze legs and velvet-upholstered armchairs and chaises lounges, featuring tones of red or blue, enhanced with touches of gold, and in the suites, chandeliers and painted ceilings. The double beds, decorated with monogrammed pillows and grand bedspreads are extremely comfortable. Some rooms have 4-poster beds and the balconies from the higher levels in some rooms feature magnificent views overlooking the roofs of Paris, Palais Garnier, Place de l’Opéra and the Eiffel Tower. Club level rooms are more generous in size at an average of 33 sqm and offer access to a lounge with free appetizers and drinks. Suites add living rooms, pull-out sofas and/or dining tables. Marble bathrooms feature separate stand-in showers and bathtubs.

There are total of 83 sumptuously decorated suites, with 4 Presidential Suites, 4 Royal Suites with two bedrooms, 6 Ambassador Suites, 14 Prestige Suites, 4 of which have views of the Opéra Garnier, 54 Junior Suites, 4 overlooking the Opéra. A highlight (and our firm favorite) is the mansard-roofed Honeymoon Suite on the 5th floor, with a birds eye view of the Opéra House and a chic more contemporary décor with wallpaper in tones of ivory and coral. (Note: As of this writing, the hotel is undergoing extensive room renovations)

Chambres & Suites - Le Grand Mazarin
