Cats The Musical

Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary musical 'Cats' returns to the West End for a limited run at the London Palladium thanks to popular demand. The musical will star Beverley Knight as Grizabella the glamour cat. The show is based on an unusual poem by T.S Eliot which features a group of felines called the Jellicle Cats. They meet at the annual Jellicle Ball to hear which cat their leader, Old Deuteronomy, has chosen to go to the Heaviside Layer to be reborn. The original London production ran for 21 years and is one of the most successful and well loved shows in West End history, featuring hits such as 'Macavity: The Mystery Cat', 'Jellicle Song for Jellicle Cats' and the renowned 'Memory'. This iconic musical features a revamped design by John Napier, updated choreography by Gillian Lynne and is directed by Sir Trevor Nunn. Expect the return of the 'Cats' legwarmers, the huge '80s wigs and of course the famous feline catsuits.

What the audience said…

I loved this production, it was my first time ever at a theatre show and it blew me away. Desperate to get my daughter to see this show. Would love to know when it will be back in Britain?

I was at school wen I saw cats in the 80 and I can still remember the show as if it was yesterday I loved the show then got dvd .

A wonderful show. I have seen it at least 45 times. The best musical ever.

Greatest musical I have seen.. I have attended at least 30 times all over England..

Amazing show. Fantastic atmosphere in the London Palladium. The whole cast have such energy. Thoroughly enjoyed myself.

It was absolutely wonderful- having been too young the first time around I was absolutely thrilled when I heard it was coming back to London! I saw it on New Year's Day, the evening performance and whilst Nicole Scherzinger was on holiday, Grizabella was amazing. If this could be passed on to the cast at all, I thought they were absolutely perfect and, a theatre addict, this was one of, if not the, best musical I've ever seen- you kicked my New Year off to the most incredible start, Thank you!

Massively disappointed. If I buy Heinz baked beans, I expect to get Heinz baked beans. There is no reference to this show being revised in the sales literature. We sat there bewildered, and without a clue what was going on. The dancing and singing are marvellous.

100% fantastic apart from "Rum Tum Tugger's" Character being ruined, changing him to MC Hammer.... WHY oh WHY ! did you do that ! Don't fix what's not broken!

I went with my Grandaughter yesterday to see cats, the performance was outstanding. I would like to mention Tommy, disability carer was wonderful, making life much for me, many thank Tommy

Having seen the show over 15 years ago it was a delight to refresh the memory. Was an outstanding show however really did not enjoy the gangster rap. It's very last year and the original was so perfect.

Absolutely brilliant evening, mind blowing Nicole Scherzinger together with a splendid cast, have to say we all thoroughly left the Theatre feeling wonderful.

Expensive tickets purchased so my daughter could see Nicole Scherzinger as Grizabella for her birthday. Pity Nicole chose not to turn up for work that day and was instead posting pictures of her 'great night out' in Austria on Instagram. Think Kerry Ellis will be far more professional.

Purchased tickets for my sister and her husband for Christmas knowing she'd love this as a HUGE Nicole Scherzinger fan but was massively disappointed when she wasn't in the show on Saturday night(31st). She enjoyed the show but it didn't meet her expectations. If stars aren't available on particular dates, this information should be made known as I still paid for full price tickets!!

Andrew Bushrod Thanks Nicole. My wife and I went to London on the back of you performing in the west end show Cats.I spent best part of £1000 to go and watch the show only to be told at the theatre that you basically couldn't be bothered to turn up and we where told that you are ill but in fact you had a better offer to do other things which was very disappointing. Not very professional whatsoever. Must be nice to get on a private jet and swan off to Austria. What about the people who spend their hard earned money to come and see you.

Kerry Ellis was quite simply outstanding (saw show on 31/01/2015 at 2.30. I had goosebumps the whole time. What a great performance from the entire cast. Loved it.

We saw Cats last night. The show was brilliant and we thoroughly enjoyed it despite the disappointment of finding out once inside the theatre that Nicole wasn't to be in it. I was surprised then to read later online that Nicole's grandmother was in town and Nicole was looking forward to her being in the audience last night to watch her perform? But then she didn't! I know you shouldn't go to see one particular person in a show but you could feel everyone's disappointment as we waited to go in. We also felt the understudy had supporters in so was it known in advance that Nicole was not going on? We booked tickets months ago and even then we couldn't get 2 together but the show was worth the money. The cast are amazing, the set breath taking, lighting incredible and I could have listened to the orchestra all night! I just wanted to see Nicole!!!

I saw Cats last night with my family, I had given them tickets as a Christmas gift. We were all really looking forward to watching the performance. The shows itself was good, and the cast were fantastic, Nicole played the part of Grizabella really well. However my family and I felt the theatre staff on this occasion actually let the performance down. For some reason all 'normal' theatre etiquette seemed not to apply to this performance. I appreciate as the show is running for a limited time, and the fact Nicole was playing the lead may have had something to do with this, but I just found it incredibly rude that people were shown to there seats mid performance, making other members of audience move to accommodate late comers. In my experience most West end shows, would not allow people to enter late as to not disrupt the performers and the audience. This went on throughout the performance, people were entering and leaving as they saw fit. I think the staff could have managed the situation better. Unfortunately due to the issues with the late comers, and people entering / leaving throughout it gave a polished production a very amateur feel. Which for us made us not enjoy the performance as much as we should have.

I paid for 4 tickets to take my daughter for an 18th birthday treat, really sorry but we all thought it was random, repetitive and slightly confusing, the show improved in the second act, couldn't fault the cast, NS rendition of Memories was superb, but I would still have liked a refund!

I saw the original production in 1981 but this has been substantially updated, and I was sceptical about it - especially during the first half of the show. But, wow, in the second half something happened and Nicole as Grizabella pulled the cat out of the bag and made the hair stand up on the back of my neck! I cried! The cast were sensational but the orchestra overwhelmed some of them so I couldn't hear all of the words. Nevertheless this was a first rate show from ultimate professionals.

The show is amazing but the venue not, we didn't sit in the best seats f1&f2 upper circle and the view was very disappointing I have since written to the palladium and have had no reply or acknowledgement. Cats is still such a classic! I thought it was fabulous. My only criticism is the rapping cat, I think the point was to update the show with his song but it actually made it seem dated.

Great dancing and music, wasn't overly keen on the group singing found it hard to understand what was being sung as the words were not clear enough.

I thought that Nicole was the best thing about the show; she shines as Grizabella. I can't understand why she hasn't performed in the West End before! I hope this is the start of a West End career for her. The show was brilliant but I have to say I preferred the original set of the 1980s production.

The show was amazing. Cats is a one in a lifetime show that you must see or you missed something very special. But the London Palladium Venue is OK. The seats are just made to sit in for 3 hours. The toilets are in a desolate condition. No soap in the gents toilet ,extremely dirty and the ceiling has lots of stains on so you get scared to be in there. Needs desperate improvement.

I was so excited to see Cats that I bought tickets the moment they came on sale earlier this year. I saw it the first time round when I was young and it's stuck with me. This production was just perfect - especially Nicole Scherzinger. I knew she was a talented singer but WOW, she knocked Elaine Paige out of the park. I don't entirely agree with the change of staging though. It used to be in the round but now the audience sit facing the stage. But I'm so happy that Cats returned, here's hoping it sticks around for a long time!

Kerry Ellis leads the cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical Cats as it returns to the West End for a strictly limited 12 week run at the London Palladium.

Based on Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats by T S Eliot, Cats tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles who gather at the Jellicle Ball for their leader Old Deuteronomy to choose the fellow feline that most deserves to make the journey to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn.

The show’s musical numbers include Memory, The Naming Of Cats, The Rum Tum Tugger, Macavity and The Song Of The Jellicles, with each song telling the story of a different cat as it seeks to prove its case about why it should be the one to make that journey.

Directed by Trevor Nunn with choreography by Gillian Lynne, Cats won the Best New Musical accolade at the Olivier Awards in 1981 and went on to enjoy a 21 year run in the capital. The musical has since been staged in more than 26 countries and seen by more than 50 million people.

Please note, Kerry Ellis will not be performing on 23, 24 or 25 April.

UK Tour 2016

  • View history

Following the end of the limited run at the Palladium in January 2016, Cats began a UK / European Tour, starting in Manchester at the end of January 2016. The set uses the number plate "NAP 13R".

The production toured the UK, as well as engagements in Italy and Switzerland in 2016. In 2017 and 2018 the same production had stops in the Middle East, Asia as well as European venues, with no UK tour dates announced. The production continues to be performed in English. The 2018 leg of the tour began in Hong Kong, and included visits to 13 Chinese cities, before taking a hiatus. The tour returned to Europe at the very end of 2018 into 2019, continuing on to East Asia and South East Asia from 2019 onwards. Due to the Covid pandemic, dates in Asia in 2020 and Europe into 2021 were cancelled. The tour resumed on 13 May 2022 in Switzerland, and played dates across Europe.

Production Specifics [ ]

This production used a new built touring set, "NAP 13R", which is somewhat flatter and more readily transportable than the previous UK Tour set "NAP 16". Rather than using a staircase, or "flying saucer", to transport Grizabella to the Heaviside Layer, this production uses a flying harness and she ascends apparently unaided. Compared to the previous UK tour , this production brought back Mistoffelees' rope entrance and the trapeze in the opening.

In terms of material performed, the 2016 run of this tour followed closely to the Palladium revisions, with Street Cat Tugger , glamorous Grizabella , the Bill Deamer choreographed tap number etc. The production cut " Pouncival " from the cast list, however used the Pouncival/George costume (as well as two distinctly different Electra costumes) as swing costumes.

Changes within the 2016 Run [ ]

Towards the end of 2016 small changes were introduced, including the ensemble echoing Demeter's alarmed cry of "Macavity?!". Similar small changes were introduced to the previous UK Tour as they prepared for the major changes involved in the Palladium production.

Changes from the 2017 Run [ ]

From the 2017 run onwards, the production title was renamed from "UK/Europe Tour" to "International Tour". The Street Cat Tugger was reverted to the original Rockstar version and Growltiger's Last Stand was cut completely. " Pekes and Pollicles " was moved from Act 1, and replaced by a short " Macavity " preview before the Jellicle Ball. "Pekes and Pollicles" replaced ""Growltiger's Last Stand" as a performance by Gus, Munkustrap, and the ensemble. The reprise of " Gus, the Theatre Cat " that followed "Growltiger's Last Stand", as the audience were brought out of the flashback and back into the present, is cut as this version of "Pekes and Pollicles" is not a flashback scene; the audience sees Gus get to play the Great Rumpus Cat one last time.

Similar to the 2007-2010 Australasia tour , Jemima sang her "Moonlight" verse of " The Moments of Happiness " in Mandarin Chinese during the tour stops in China.

See HERE for more details on the changes to the score.

Changes from the 2022 Run [ ]

From the 2022 run onwards, the production used new character designs created by John Napier in 2021.

Tour Dates [ ]

Cats was originally scheduled to play the following tour dates in China. However, the dates were cancelled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. [1]

Cats was planned to tour Germany, Austria and Switzerland from December 2020, performing in English. The regional dates were to be produced by Mehr-BB Promotion . However with the ongoing pandemic at the time these plans were not set in action.

With the recommenced tour, the 2022 season followed this route. [2]

Initial cast list announcements listed Rebecca Parker as playing Bombalurina, however from the first performance the role was covered by Megan Armstrong , initially a swing in the production.

Before the tour was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the following cast had been announced for the since-cancelled 2020 China run: Rhys Batten as Coricopat / Dance Captain, Jo Bird as Tantomile, Karina Russell as Victoria. Because of the tour's suspension, many of the cast members ended up transferring to the 2020 Asia Tour instead.

The Cat Empire

Where The Angels Fall

New album out now.

“Felix and I first formed The Cat Empire more than 20 years ago and a sheer zest for music was floating in the air. We had many conversations about new concepts, like the piano playing the rhythms, the percussion forming the melody, and things were fresh and exciting to say the least. When Felix and I decided to create our most recent recording, Where The Angels Fall, we were determined to recapture the energy of our debut release. Not only were we brilliantly successful, not a day of its making going by without big grins on our faces, we also managed to make one of the most sophisticated albums in The Cat Empire repertoire. I have been listening to this album on repeat and am still in love with it”

– Ollie

“I’m so excited to have this album out in the world. I think our fans are going to love it. We put everything we had (and then some) into making it. It was pure music making from the first note to the last. It’s overflowing with dynamics, contrasts, emotion, madness, and a deep sense of celebration. It came out of an immense time – the change of line up, the death of my younger brother, the effects of Covid on live music. Coming through all that with songs that are going to light up stages for years to come feels very very special. I’m pinching myself. It’s the start of something magic.”

[Updated]: Yusuf will be returning later this year for an innovative four-date tour around the UK and Ireland after 33 years away from the stage.

This will definitely not be a tour in the usual sense and is set to incorporate Yusuf’s timeless hits such as Wild World, Father & Son and The First Cut Is The Deepest, alongside music from his highly acclaimed new albums, An Other Cup and Roadsinger.

To make it even more of a spectacle for fans, Yusuf will also weave his latest creative voyage, his first musical, Moonshadow, into the shows.

Speaking about his work on Moonshadow, Yusuf said: “My songs always told a story, so it’s natural for me to extend that into a stage musical form.

It’s taken a long time to arrive, but it’s always been a dream of mine to write a musical. Growing up in the West End of London, surrounded by theatres and shows, obviously left a strong impression on me.

I originally wanted to be a composer, not a pop star. Strange how it’s taken almost a lifetime, but it had to – the story is somewhat a metaphorical mirror of my own journey, so I suppose it had to wait to reach where I am today.”

Yusuf has asked Harvey Goldsmith CBE to manage this project. The musical director of “Moonshadow” is Christopher Nightingale, who has previously worked on the Lord of The Rings Musical and Bombay Dreams alongside A.R. Rahman. The choreographer, Nichola Treherne, was behind box office smashes from Starlight Express to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Renowned lighting designer Mark Brickman is designing the stage and lighting. He lit Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” and is currently designing Cirque du Soleil’s new show in Las Vegas. Rob Hallet is promoting the shows for AEG Live following his success with Leonard Cohen.

The four city “Guess I’ll Take My Time Tour” will commence in Dublin and continue to Birmingham, Liverpool and end in London at the Royal Albert Hall.

The full dates are:

November 15 – Dublin The O2 November 23 – Birmingham NIA December 5 – Liverpool Echo Arena December 8 – London Royal Albert Hall

There are some artists who become the personification of their genre. They represent everything good about that type of music to such an extent that most other acts simply sound derivative. When it comes to rockabilly, it's undoubtedly Stray Cats who define the sound.

Formed in 1979 while the rest of the world was lost in an ocean of synthesisers, Brian Setzer, Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom perfected the rockabilly formula. Over the years they recorded countless classics but, quite simply, if you haven't seen them live you'll never know what truly gifted musicians they are. In a sold out Brixton Academy, the Stray Cats sound as fresh now as they ever did. Setzer's guitar sizzles as he picks out flawless licks and howls to the roof with a passion and rawness that belies his age. The rhythm sections seamlessly slips between the effortless cool 'Stray Cat Strut' and the psychobilly aggression of 'Rumble in Brighton'. (With an obligatory lyric change to 'Rumble in Brixton' on the last chorus) The band blast through old classics like 'Gene & Eddy' and 'Ubangi Stomp' with a swagger and energy reminiscent of glory days of rock n' roll. The slower numbers such as 'Summer Nights' give a chance for Setzer to show off how rich his voice has become with age as 4000 leather jacketed fans sway along.

All this comes before an encore including covers of 'Twenty Flight Rock' and 'That's Alright Mama'. The final number is a wild version of 'Please Don't Touch' where Lee Rocker mounts his double bass like a possessed rock n' roll gargoyle as Setzer leaps across the stage monitors with an enormous grin on his face.

I had the pleasure to see them in '83 at the US Festival in California. It was the '80s Woodstock, they played their 2nd album to 200,000+ before it was released. The 3-day line up was incredible, just google the bands and videos. When the cats started their first song all of the fringes of the crowd went to the stage for the first time making the food vendor area a ghost town. I know, I was the Icce vendor dude... The reviews said that they were the highlight of the event...

Incredible show. Three musicians really showcased their talent instrumentally, vocally, and with lots of energy. I would definitely recommend to any fan of theirs or those who love the rockabilly beat! Well worth the price to herd these cats!

Review: CATS at National Theatre

On stage at the National Theatre until January 22, 2023.

Cats is a musical that isn't often taken seriously (for one reason or another), and in 2019, the film version unfortunately made 'fur fly' once again. Despite this, Cats ran on Broadway for 18 years, and it is right behind Phantom of the Opera as one of the longest-running musicals, and the movie is becoming a cult classic. Andrew Lloyd Webber composed the show's music based on T. S. Eliot's children's book, "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats." Webber brought on Trevor Nunn and Richard Stilgoe for additional lyrical support, and thus, Cats was born. Cats is about a group of felines (a.k.a jellicle cats) who meet once a year for what they call "The Jellicle" Ball. At the end of the Ball, Old Deuteronomy (Cameron Schutza) picks a cat to ascend to the Heaviside Layer, and the chosen cat is then reborn.

The cats and their beloved junkyard have arrived at The National Theatre in Washington D.C.

Review: CATS at National Theatre

What's to love about this production of Cats ? Well, everything. The breathtaking choreography, by Andy Blankenbuehler , is a mix of ballet, jazz, tap, and acrodance, and it pays homage in style to the original choreographer, Gillian Lynne . There's a lot of talent in this national tour of Cats. Tayler Harris , who plays Grizabella the Glamour Cat, belts out a beautiful "Memory," and it will give you goosebumps. Hank Santos rocks out as Rum Tum Tugger in a Mick Jagger -like fashion during his song, "The Rum Tum Tugger." The Magical Mister Mistoffelees, is a bright, energetic number, which features Ibn Snell as Mistoffelees. Snell's smooth ballet movements. Other audience favorites include: the toe-tapping "The Old Gumbie Cat," the jazzy "Macavity, the Mystery Cat," and the hypotonic "Journey to the Heaviside" layer.

What's a Jellicle Ball without the junkyard? The scenic design by John Napier creates a sense of scale, and this makes the cast look small compared to the massive junkyard objects, like an old tire and oven. The costumes are the famous leotards of the original musical, but Napier updates them to look more modern. The makeup and hair, designed by Victoria Tinsman , compliments Napier's costumes, and showcases each cat's unique personality.

So, should you attend the Jellicle Ball? Absolutely. Cats is one of those musicals that will stay with you, whether you see it for the first time or twentieth time.

Running Time: About 2 hours and 30 minutes with a 20-minute intermission Top photo credit & caption: Tayler Harris as Grizabella by Matthew Murphy , Murphymade

Cats is now on tour in the U.S. The musical runs from January 17 until January 23, 2023 at The National Theatre in Washington D.C. Tickets can be purchased here .
