Kurseong Tourist Lodge - Darjeeling, India (UPDATED 2024 Reviews)
- 1 Understand
- 3 Get around
Kurseong ( Bengali : কার্শিয়াং Kārśiẏāṁ ) is a town in the Darjeeling Hills of West Bengal .
Understand [ edit ]
The town is also known as the "Land of Glorious Sunsets" because it faces the western part of the hills, the sunset is visible through a glorious mix of clouds turning crimson, yellow and red.
The Lepcha name literally means the "white orchid of the eastern Himalayas", which was apparently given by a European researcher who was researching an exotic variety of white orchid that could only be found at the height of Kurseong i.e. 4500 feet above sea level. This variety of the white orchid only grows at this height; hence the name the white orchid of the eastern Himalayas.
Get in [ edit ]
Kurseong is about 45 kilometres from Siliguri the gateway to North Bengal. The airport of Siliguri is known as Bagdogra while the railway station is known as New Jalpaiguri. It takes approximately 2 hours to reach Kurseong if you travel by Hill Cart Road, the comfortable and scenic link running parallel to the railway tracks or about one hour using the Old Army Road (Pankhabari Road), which is steeper.
Get around [ edit ]
You can either walk or flag down mini-vans. These vans show availability if they have a sign-up with their destination (for duty or reserved means you can't flag them down). From Kurseong railway station to Makaibari Tea Estate is around 60 rupees.
See [ edit ]
Kurseong is home to the costliest teas in the world. World-famous Castleton, Ambotia and Makaibari tea gardens produce the most delicate aromas of all black teas known to mankind.

Great government Property
Booked Kurseong tourist lodge for my parents and the review is based on their opinion. The rooms are good and clean. The staff is cooperative and helpful . Food quality is good and their momos are particularly yummy. The view from the dining hall, of the mountains and toy train is worth the price of the food. The lodge also arranges for car to visit nearby places of interest such as Dow Hill. Those who have experienced shoddy service from WB Govt property before, will be pleasantly surprised by the Kurseong tourist lodge.
- Free parking
- Visit hotel website
This hotel is located just beside the main road in kurseong. In the morning you can hear the toy train passing by. I would suggest to go for large double bedded rooms. These are wooden rooms with balconies and have excellent view. You can sit in the balcony and have your breakfast while enjoying the scenic beauty and clouds coming in. Food quality is average. Staff behaviour is good. The view from the lobby and the restaurant is excellent.Rooms can be booked online from west bengal tourism website.
Destination Kurseong literally means “Land of White Orchid” in local language. It is an old hill city in the lap oh Himalaya at a height of 4860 ft. British loved this neighbor of Darjeeling for her natural beauty and charming weather round the year. Many churches and educational institutions enlightened her glory. But, now-a-days, this lovely land is considered mainly as a food junction on way to Darjeeling. Approach Kurseong is 53 km from New Jalpaiguri Station. Frequent car / jeeps are available at station to reach there by 2 hours. Also, journey by toy from Darjeeling, available twice a day, is very much enjoyable. Accommodation We stayed two nights in Kurseong Tourist Lodge, a property of State Tourism, about 1 km from Kurseong Station, right on Hill Cart Road, having good parking system. There are 16 double rooms including 4 with private balcony, from where Mount Kanchanjungha is visible In cloud free days,. Rooms are clean and comfortable. The bathroom we used was crystal clean. Rate includes complementary bed tea and breakfast. They serve only Makaibari Tea with excellent flavor. The restaurant is large and serves good food, specially their Momo attracts frequent outside travelers, sometimes spoiling time of inside boarders. Service of staff is good and behavior is very polite like traditional hill people Environment is peaceful, safe and secured, suitable for family. Sight seeing Surrounded by several famous tea gardens, there are many tourist spots in Kurseong like orchid house, educational institutions and churches, Eagle’s Crag, Netaji Subhash Bose Museum, Dowhill Deer Park, Giddapahar Tourist Complex, monasteries, temples, Kurseong station dotted with baby trains etc. Car is available at lodge or station on hier. Local people are very simple, friendly and eager to help tourists. However, aimless walk during dawn or dusk in the Land of White Orchid is the best part of visiting Kurseong.
- Cleanliness
It was fun loving trip for me.I visited mostly all place of north east and one of them was kurseong. Its healthy trip for me because kurseong is a hill station. I visited many palce like deer park netaji subhash chandra bose museum eagle crag castleton tea estate ambotia temple sitong makai bari tea estate and people of kurseong are very good and friendly And thanks to all the lodge staff who helped to me see all the best places of kurseong.
- Sleep Quality
Kurseong is a quaint town lies at an altitude of about 4800 ft. The tourist lodge is well located but needs renovation. The lodge has a restaurant, where good homely made food is served. Booking can be done through WBTDC. Small Town but it's scenic beauty is splendid. Misty environment fascinates the tourists. Recommend for one night stay.
Good place to stay. The rooms are a little small. But the balcony is nice. So is the hotel and the bar. Service is appropriate. Location is on the main road. Food is good. You have plenty of option in the hotel and the good thing is they cater to your requests.

Kurseong – The Land of White Orchid
Kurseong, a subdivision of the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, is a bustling town located at an altitude of 4864 ft. If you are planning to visit the Darjeeling town or any of the nearby places, you would most likely be passing this township. Although it has been urbanized in the recent years, the real beauty of the place gets reflected as you venture beyond the main road (i.e. the Hill Cart Road) and into the forest, tea gardens and adjoining villages. There are mesmerizing viewpoints, forests of Dow Hill, British era schools and churches, heritage structures, museums which you can explore during your visit.
We first visited Kurseong during our trip to Tinchuley, Takdah, Lamahatta and Chatakpur . On our way back to the New Jalpaiguri station from Chatakpur, we covered a few spots of this serene locality. But unlike my other blogs, I do not want to restrict this article based on a single visit. On the other hand, I would cover the places that we visited, and also mention the other important places that we could not cover. Next time we visit Kurseong, I would surely enhance the blog and include those places also.
Dow Hill has carved out its own unique entity within Kurseong. With a picturesque hilly landscape covered with forest, it is worth to visit the place if you are in Kurseong. We covered a few sightseeing spots here:
Dow Hill School for Girls :
Built during the British rule, this Government run school is a pleasure to the eyes due to its unique colonial structure and tranquil surroundings.
Victoria Boys School :
This is another British era school and now being run by the Government of West Bengal. From the main gate on the road, we had to walk along a scenic pathway with lush greenery on both sides, to reach the school. Just before the school gate, there is an old church, which is locally known as the haunted church.
Earlier known as the Deer Park , it is now nothing more than a children’s park. Instead of deer, we found some rabbits playing in a separate enclosure. The park is open from 10 AM to 4 PM and is closed on Thursdays.
Dead Road :
Even if you don’t have kids with you, please do visit the Eco Park, as you would pass through a pine forest popularly known as the Dead Road. We got down from our car, and walked along the road with thick plantation on both sides.
Makaibari Tea Estate :
One of the most famous tea estates of the Darjeeling district. Its factory is located at a distance of 3 KM from the Kurseong town. It was in the month of May that we visited the place and hoped to buy the first flush of Darjeeling tea. But unfortunately due to the high demand, it was sold out both at the factory and the outlet situated a little away downhill. So we had to buy the second flush tea. But unlike the tea gardens of Tinchuley and Takdah (Runglee Rungliot, Teesta Valley and Peshok), the tea garden itself is not that much attractive and also there was no way to enter the garden.
Chimney Heritage Park:
Located around 7 KM uphill from the Kurseong Toy Train station, it is a small park with a centrally located structure of a chimney that was erected during the British era. There is also a view point here. But when we arrived at the park, it was raining and it had become too foggy. So, we didn’t venture towards the view point. The park is open from 10 AM to 4 PM and is closed on Thursdays.
Glenhill Public School :
This is one of the famous private schools of the region. From the front of the school we got a magnificent view of the surrounding area, as well as the 40 feet high statue of Lord Hanuman, known as the Hamuman Tok . That place is itself a sightseeing spot, and more significantly due to the adjacent “ I Love Kurseong ” signage, popular with the selfie seekers. In this trip, we didn’t have the opportunity to visit Hamuman Tok or “I Love Kurseong”.
Kurseong Tourist Lodge :
Located within the Kurseong town, I would coin this government tourist lodge as a tourist attraction mainly for 2 reasons:
- The alluring view of the Balasan River and the Kurseong and Mirik towns that the lobby and the dining hall of the lodge provide.
- The special Kurseong-style momo that the kitchen serves. We had our lunch here, and its taste was definitely unique. I would surely make a pit stop here the next time I pass by, only for the sake of the momo. We had also ordered for Chicken thupka and Hakka noodles.
Other places of interest:
Other important places that we couldn’t cover, and should be a part of your bucket list if you are visiting Kurseong:
- Hanuman Tok and I Love Kurseong
- Gidda Pahar View point
- Rock Garden
- St. Mary’s Hill and Church
- Eagle’s Crag (A View point)
- Margaret’s Deck Tea Lounge
- Castleton Tea Estate
- Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Museum
- Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Museum
Best time to visit Kurseong :
Many tourists visit Darjeeling during the summer holidays to get a respite from the heat of the plains. But, the best time to visit to the region is during the extended winter months, i.e. mid-October to February. During this time, the sky is normally clear and you will get an exquisite view of the Kanchenjunga range.

KURSEONG TOURIST LODGE - Updated 2024 (Darjeeling, India)
Kurseong: Ultimate Guide To Plan Your Trip
Kurseong: The Land of White Orchids. The name behind this quaint little town situated close to Darjeeling has an obvious reason. The hill-slopes of Kurseong are home to innumerable white orchids that make the landscape look bright and beautiful. A hill station, located around 30 Km from Darjeeling, Kurseong is locally known as “Kharsang”. Kharsang, in Lepcha language, means ‘Land of White Orchids’.
Located at 1458 feet above sea level and has a pleasant climate all year round. The weather is more moderate than Darjeeling and tourism is a major source of livelihood of this hill station.
This place is around 47 Km away from Siliguri and Bagdogra. It is connected to the heart of the city via road and via the Darjeeling Toy Train. You can reach this beautiful town from all other parts of India and across the globe via Bagdogra Airport which is a maximum of 1 hour and 20 minutes away.
Since the year 1880, this has been a place for rejuvenation of the mind, soul and body. The British Viceroys would escape to this hill station to recover from illnesses. It continues to be an escape destination from the nation’s heatwaves.
Kurseong Weather, Temperature and Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is from the 1 st week of March to the 1 st week of May and again from the 1 st week of October to the last week of November.
Temperature
Temperatures here tend to vary a little. Although it does get humid during certain parts of the year, temperatures feel pleasant all through. There are only a couple of weeks in the winter months when it could feel really cold. The fair amount of humidity leads to precipitation for almost 6 months in a year.
This hamlet town has one of the most temperate weather conditions across tourist destinations in the world. The three hottest months of the year are June, July and August.
A typical day in the month of July will feel like 27.1 degrees C and night will witness a temperature of not less than 18.5 degrees C.
The Factor Of Feels-like Temperature
The temperature of a particular area is not the only deciding factor behind experiencing the weather. If higher temperatures are accompanied by higher levels of humidity, then the discomfort invariably increases. Similarly, if colder temperatures come along with cold winds, the ‘feels-like’ temperature goes down a few points on the thermometer.
Thus humidity and the chill of the winds play important roles in deciding the weather conditions here.
When does it rain and snow in here?
Significant amounts of rainfall occur in the month of August. There is also the possibility of snowfall this month. The months that have the lowest chance of rainfall are from November to February. These are more or less dry spells and tourists love this kind of weather for uninterrupted wandering around.
How humid does it get?
This place is humid and there is no denying that. Highest humidity occurs in the month of August. January is the month with the lowest levels of humidity.
Gently Breezy
Kurseong never really experiences strong and gusty winds. The winds are calm and although January is the windiest month, the average speed never goes beyond 1.3 knots.
December is also fairly windy but the average wind speed is contained within 9.8 knots. The consequence is a gentle and breezy air around the city.
Travel Plan by Seasons
Spring season lasts from March to May. The highest recorded temperature is never more than 26.8 degrees C and the lowest temperature never goes beyond 17.8 degrees C. May will feel warmer and you can expect some amount of precipitation for close to 10 days in a month, on average.
The months in the middle of the year are highly comfortable and make tourism very convenient. It lasts from June to August. The humidity is slightly higher than other months but frequent precipitations occur so the average daily temperature never really goes up.
Summer is an important month for tourism and accommodations gets prebooked in this period. So, if you are planning to travel in the summers you got to pre-book your stays.
Autumn lasts from the months of September to November. The highest recorded temperature in these months is around 25.9 degrees during the day and around 18.4 degrees at night. These temperatures feel especially comfortable because of the wind that comes along.
It might rain or snow a bit in autumn. However, autumn is still the second most sought after the season as far as tourism is concerned, after the summer months.
Lasting from the months of December to January, winter months are quite cold in Kurseong and a minimum temperature falls to 10 degrees C. It could also rain or snow a little in this season. Not too many tourists come visiting in the winter months. But as you know, cold places take a different look altogether in winters and this place is too not an exception.

How to Reach Kurseong From Siliguri | Bagdogra?
It is just around 35 Km away from Siliguri.
The hill station does not have its own train station and the closest stop that you could get down at is Jalpaiguri. The distance from Jalpaiguri is again a good 61 Km.
Here, we will talk at length about the 4 options of transportation from Siliguri.
Siliguri has the nearest airport, Bagdogra, from where direct flights operate till Kurseong. You can take a bus or a taxi to reach Bagdogra airport from Siliguri.
This is the most preferred mode of transportation from Siliguri to Kurseong. The 34.8 Km of distance can be covered in a span of 1 hour 19 minutes. You could hire pre-booked taxis from Siliguri.
These taxis or jeeps generally have a pre-fixed rate chart. A good amount of bargaining is a must if you want to pay the right price.

Hotels in Kurseong
This place is primarily popular for boarding schools and tea estates. However, it is a small town and accommodation might not be as fancy as Darjeeling and Gangtok. Despite being a small town, the town area does have its share of good hotels and homestays.
Although people generally visit here to take a look at boarding schools or for admission procedures, there are many tourists as well who look for places to stay. Tourists are generally fond of places situated at a distance from the centre of the city. This is perhaps why they prefer putting up closer to the tea estates and farther away from the throbbing city life.
What kinds of hotels are available in here?
The place has all kinds of hotels. They range from budget hotels to the ones in mid-range as well as the ones that belong to the luxurious category. You can choose as per your budget and your convenience.
Since it is a small town but does welcome a large influx of guests in peak seasons, pre-booking hotels is a wise idea.
