Cairns Outback Tour – How To Visit The Chillagoe Caves

chillagoe caves tour prices

Whether you travel in luxury or backpack around the globe, Cairns and Tropical Northern Queensland is a must-see region in Australia! Cairns has many things to do , boasting two UNESCO World Heritage sites (the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef). But did you know that you can also visit the famed Australian Outback on a day trip from Cairns? The Cairns Outback journey will take you to the Chillagoe Caves, historic mines, Granite Gorge, and more as you experience the unique landscape of Australia’s interior. This makes an excellent day trip on a 5 day itinerary.

Thanks for reading Sunhats and Chardonnay! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

Smelter ruins

When you plan your trip to Cairns, you are most likely heading there to experience the Barrier Reef’s hot waters or have fun in the tropical rainforest. Both protected sites are unique and offer many opportunities as vacation destinations.

However, lying a few hours northwest of Cairns lies the edge of the great Australian Outback. This unique landscape exists only in the center of Australia, where Ayer’s Rock is located. But on a day trip from Cairns, you can experience the isolation, dust, and unforgiving features of this iconic region.

Chillagoe Caves

How to Get There

The best way to explore this region is on a Cairns Outback tour. Several companies offer these tours, including Viator and Get Your Guide . However, I would recommend booking directly with Billy Tea Safaris . They will pick you up at your hotel in town and provide transportation in an air-conditioned 4WD vehicle that you will be glad to have once you get over the McAllister Mountain Range. This vehicle can also cope with rough terrain with very little road at times. This is also a small-group tour, perfect for those who do not like crowds.

Along the way, your guide will tell a few stories of the local area and identify any of the birds and wildlife. You may be lucky to view species such as emus, wedge-tail eagles, squatter pigeons, kangaroos, and frilled neck lizards. The first stop will be the Skybury Coffee Plantation for morning coffee and a “bio-break.”

Highlights of a Cairns Outback Tour

Skybury Coffee Plantation

Located just outside the town of Mareeba, Skybury Plantation is one of the top tourism venues in the Atherton Tablelands. When you arrive in the parking lot of the plantation, your guide will identify some of the unusual vegetation surrounding this area. In addition, there is a unique tree frog that has taken up residence inside the washroom. Of course, everyone must go a look.

The coffee shop of the plantation offers you very knowledgeable staff who will tell you about the history of the plantation on display in the lobby. They are happy to answer any questions. The smell inside the shop is a mix of wonderful coffee aromas and warm baked goods.

View from Skybury Coffee Plantation

As part of the Cairns outback tour, you are led to the back room, where coffee and warm scones will be served. The views of the valley surrounding this plantation are stunning. After you finish your coffee, you are welcome to browse the bakeshop and roastery to purchase your coffee beans to bring home. In addition to coffee, the plantation also grows papaya available for purchase.

Chillagoe-Mungaga Caves National Park

As you travel further into the Outback along dirt roads, your guide will continue to provide informative commentary of the region’s history and Aboriginal culture. When you arrive at the Chillagoe-Mungaga Caves National Park , an experienced guide will hand you a flashlight and outline what to expect within the caves. As you approach the caves’ entrance, you are reminded that proper footwear is a must as the rocks provide uneven surfaces and can be dangerous if they are damp.

Chillagoe Caves

There are several different cave tours available. The Royal Arch Tour takes you through one of the largest cave systems and is about 90 minutes long. It is best to check the park’s website for closures as the wet season can affect local access.

It is said that these caves were part of ancient coral reefs some 400-420 million years ago. Over time, they became fossilized and transformed into limestone labyrinths winding their way under the mountains. Inside, the tunnels and rooms showcase an interesting array of stalagmite and stalactite formations that are intriguing to behold. You will also discover some unexpected beams of daylight, fig tree roots climbing the walls of the caverns, and the constant flitting of bats. (Don’t worry, most will remain well above your heads)

Chillagoe Smelter Ruins

The next stop on the Cairns outback tour is the Chillagoe Smelter Ruins . The Chillagoe smelters were the center of the thriving mining industry in the early 1900s. Ore, copper, lead, silver, and gold were processed through these smelters until 1943 when other smelters were built closer to larger mines. In the 1950’s most of the buildings were sold, but the smelter stacks remained.

At this site, which can be very hot in the sun, you can view the display boards of the mining history and see the remains of the smelter stacks. In other parts of the site, your tour guide may take you to a waste pile where you are free to try your luck at finding a gold or silver nugget.

Looking for treasure at the Smelter Chillagoe

Aussie Outback Lunch

After spending the morning crawling through narrow passageways in the caves and wiping the dust off from the smelters, you are undoubtedly ready for an authentic Aussie lunch. The town of Chillagoe is home to a 100+-year-old Post-Office Hotel and pub that provides just the right blend of Aussie hospitality. Grab a burger and have a cold beer while taking a break from the dust and heat. Take a walk around town and experience life a century ago.

Boulder at Balancing Rock on Cairns Outback Tour

Balancing Rock Formation

The balancing rock formation is a sizeable bean-shaped boulder perched on a hill outside Chillagoe. It can be reached by a 450m hiking loop that traverses the sides of the rocky outcrop. It is pretty steep in places, so be prepared. Your guide may also point out some “nasty-nasty” berries given their name by the local Aboriginal people. In short, please do not eat them as they are poisonous.

Nasty-nasty berries

At the base of this rocky outcrop, you will also find some Aboriginal artwork painted on the rocks to remind the area’s history. Your guide may also provide some Dreamtime stories, as shown by the art.

Dreamtime stories painted on the rocks

It is also interesting to note that one of the features expected in the Australian Outback is the presence of anthills or termite mounds in this area. These mounds are home to grass-eating termites and can grow several meters high. Larger mounds are oriented north-south as a built-in temperature mechanism to reduce the least surface area pointing toward the hot sun.

Large anthills are common in the Cairns outback

Granite Gorge

The final stop on the Cairns outback tour is probably one of the most rewarding. Although Granite Gorge is designed for camping, hiking, and rock climbing, the favorite activity is the opportunity to cuddle some native animals.

The Mareeba Rock wallabies are available to pet, feed, and cuddle as they are pretty tame. Like a small kangaroo, the rock wallabies keep their young in the mother’s pouch until they are weaned. If you are lucky, you may see and interact with animal families. As a safety note, their claws are sharp!

Final Thoughts

As you head back to Cairns and the moist tropical air of the coast, you will travel back through the Atherton Tablelands and see the tropical rainforests rising in front of you. It is hard to believe that such diverse natural features exist such a short drive outside Cairns.

If Cairns is your vacation destination, be sure to include an Outback tour as part of your experience.

Chillagoe Caves Tour - Kuranda - McAllister Range

Our Chillagoe Caves and Outback Day Tour begins when a friendly naturalist guide picks passengers up from their Cairns accommodation.

The Outback day tour begins its journey, winding its way over the Kuranda Range heading west through Mareeba embarking on a remarkable journey back to prehistoric times.

The Kuranda Range is a scenic stretch of highway that is enveloped by World Heritage Rainforest. The road winds along the side of rocky waterfalls and the buttress roots of giant trees, home to a million humming cicadas and exotic forest birds.

Forest clearings offer spectacular views of the tropical city of Cairns that lies below, and out to the sparkling waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

The Great Dividing Range is waiting at the summit of the Kuranda Range, and the tropical rainforest quickly merges into a drier Eucalypt forest, home to an abundance of kangaroos and wallabies.

After following the Kuranda Range a short while, we turn off the main highway and the real four wheel drive adventure begins.

Our guides have both access and knowledge of private dirt roads that run behind agricultural properties, and the tour begins twisting and turning through cattle, mango, paw paw, lychee, longan, banana, coffee and orchid farms.

The scenery is diverse and ever-changing, the wildlife prolific.  The tour guides have a special knack of spotting some of the most elusive wildlife in the Eucalypt forest – kangaroos, wallabies, lizards and cows are sure to be seen.

The landscape is framed by tall mountain ranges in the distance, and depending on the season the land may be dry and arid, or during the green season rich and vibrant.

These contradictions make Cairns and Far Northern Tropical Queensland an intriguing and beguiling area of natural beauty to visit.

First Stop...Morning Tea at Skybury Coffee Plantation. From here we travel through the back blocks of this wetland area viewing wallabies, emus and other wildlife and then along the irrigated agricultural paddocks of this fertile area, eventually crossing over the Great Divide and into the Western watershed.

Travel through historical ghost towns and rolling hills rich in minerals eventually giving way to towering limestone karsts scattered around Chillagoe.

Chillagoe Caves - Outback Queensland Australia

There are over 600 limestone caves in the Chillagoe region, intriguing labyrinths that twist and turn underneath the dry tropical woodland forests.

It's here where we explore the Royal Arch Cave, a vast cave system that features several massive chambers, each with distinct and intriguing features.

There are several stairs leading in and out of the cave system, therefore a moderate level of fitness is required.

The Royal Arch Cave is surrounded by woodlands that feature pockets of vine thicket clinging to limestone outcrops.  This woodland forest is home to a variety of native Australian animals including birds, wallabies and kangaroos.

The caves are naturally air-conditioned and maintain a constant temperature of 22 degrees Celsius, cool relief from Chillagoe’s dry heat.

The first chamber of the Royal Arch is enormous, a monumental testament to the millions of years it took Mother Nature to create.

Our privileged tour group is led by a Queensland Park and Wildlife Ranger through narrow cave walkways until the second chamber is discovered – a glorious open chamber with remarkable limestone formations.

This is the ‘Picnic Chamber’, a popular picnic spot largely due to the constant temperate milieu for the miners and their families in the early 1900’s.  The tour continues through the limestone labyrinths, home to bats and pythons, a remarkable tour through a rich geological past.

The final chamber in the Royal Arch Cave system is the Cathedral Cave, an enormous space which features pulpit rock formations, inspiring both the name and a sense of awe and inspiration.

Chillagoe Caves have taken 400 million years to form, a timeline which is ever apparent in the Cathedral Cave.  This unique system of caves boast the typical features of stalagmites and stalactites, along with some more distinctive features, such as a giant strangler fig growing from the base of one chamber through a crack in the cave roof.

The cave tour lasts approximately an hour, and is a wonderful journey of discovery and exploration, one which showcases some areas of immense ecological and geological significance.

After leaving the township of Chillagoe behind, our outback day tour begins winding its way back down to the tropical city of Cairns.

There is one more short comfort stop before heading back towards the city of Cairns.

Our Chillagoe Caves and Outback Day Tour is a full day adventure tour of the Australian outback, allowing travellers a unique insight into the Australian Outback landscape, history and culture.

Full of immense natural beauty and an abundance of wildlife, the Chillagoe Caves and Outback Day Tour will create memories to treasure forever.

Chillagoe Smelter

The drive to Chillagoe is marked with a distinct landscape of granite and limestone – a remarkable geological feature in an area that was formed by volcanic activity.  As the town of Chillagoe appears on the horizon your tour guide begins to tell of the interesting and unique history.

The town of Chillagoe is small and charming, boasting quaint country cottages, rolling agricultural paddocks and two prominent taverns located on the main streets.

The tour guide expertly guides the four wheel drive through the town, and just outside city limits lies the Chillagoe Smelter.  The Chillagoe Smelter played a significant role during the mining boom, and operated from 1901 to 1943.  In its heyday, the Chillagoe Smelters employed over 1,000 men, who were responsible for extracting copper, silver, lead, mica and some gold.

During this time the township of Chillagoe was a thriving metropolis, until the ultimate collapse of Chillagoe Smelters in 1943.

Today, chimneys still stand tall on the landscape, a testament to smeltering at the turn of the century.  The size, scale and evidence of smelting processes, which are now very rare, are preserved in the remains at the Chillagoe Smelters.

The Chillagoe Smelters are historically significant, and are being managed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife. After exploring the smelters it’s all aboard the 4WD once again, the next destination is the Post Office Hotel in Chillagoe for lunch.

Lunch Time in Chillagoe

The Post Office Hotel is an iconic Australian tavern with some of the most delicious counter meals in all of Queensland! There is also a souvenir shop where you can purchase some souvenirs.

Aboriginal Rock Art & Balancing Rock

Next stop, view some amazing Aboriginal Rock Art and Balancing rock. This stop is for 1 hour approximately.

Granite Gorge

Granite Gorge is where you have a chance to hand feed wallabies and hold other indigenous animals before heading back to Cairns.

We have no doubt you will enjoy your day out in the Australian Outback. We also have a fantastic Daintree Rainforest & Cape Tribulation day tour, please click here to view or you can book one of our Combo Package tours and save up to $70.00 per person here

  • catherinef995 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great day in the rain Great day at Daintree and Mossman. It rained - a lot! This didn’t spoil our day although the walk on Thornton Beach would’ve been better in the sun! River cruise was great and we saw crocs! Graham was our driver and the reason for 4 stars was the van was either freezing or hot & stuffy. There was never a happy medium. Read more Written 28 March 2024
  • Lammy230 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Fun day in the rain We had a great time on the tour. The Daintree river cruise was fantastic. The tour showed the devastation that Cyclone Jasper caused. The damage the roads and the river ecosystems was unimaginable. Whilst it was really disappointing not being able to make Cape Tribulation - it is completely understandable. It rained a lot of the day which limited the time we could spend on the beach - (hence the “4” rating) but this couldn’t be helped. A big shout out to (a) Daniel our host for the day - who was very knowledgeable and attentive and (b) Bruce - our Daintree River Cruise driver. He was knowledgeable and exceedingly entertaining / funny (he should consider a career in comedy) Many thanks to everyone for a great day out Read more Written 21 March 2024

She is also an excellent driver. She provided us with informative and interesting commentary throughout the day. Highlights for us included the Daintree and Mossman Gorge. I would recommend this day tour to anyone. The day was well paced and thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you Emma and Billy Tea Safaris. Read more Written 12 March 2024
  • MJBoptom 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great day great guide. Fantastic day out. Tony the guide was excellent and very knowledgeable and informative pointing out the local flora and fauna. Due to the weather, high tides the itinerary had to be adjusted a little but we still did everything and even though we were running late didn’t miss anything or feel rushed. I would thoroughly recommend this efficiently run excursion. Read more Written 12 March 2024
  • Ingrid W 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent tour We have had an amazing day, despite the ever changing weather and the lack of birds and crocodile sitings. We had a guide with a lot of interesting information about the country, the communities and the rainforests plants and animals. Food was excellent. As of that wasn’t enough we got to see a Cassuare in the wild. Read more Written 5 March 2024

  • Lagoons 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles GREAT VALUE TOUR> Tour was modified due to the recent cyclone and heavy rain making some road impassable. We still had a fantastic day with our tour guide Gaven who displayed a great passion for the area. He was extremely knowledgeable and also fun. Our river cruise captain Bruce also went out of his way to find us some wildlife including a crocodile. This was no mean feat given the recent extreme damage done to the Daintree. We strongly recommend this tour. Read more Written 29 February 2024

  • 753christinei 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Amended Daintree etc trip Did this trip today. Emma our guide was very knowledgeable & shared lots with us about the rainforest. Sadly as a result of the cyclone damage we couldn’t visit Cape Tribulation so our itinerary had to be jigged around which was disappointing but obviously not something that Emma or the company could control. Trip on Daintree river pleasant, although all the crocodiles seemed to be hiding. Mossman Gorge nice & the opportunity for a paddle/dip was welcomed. Lunch stop - a hot meal provided & the Barramundi was very good Read more Written 5 February 2024

Cooktown is not only known as the location that the English sailor Captain James Cook set foot on this land in 1770 but it is also known as the first white settlement location for new Australian’s and also for the gold and tin mining booms that were thriving here between 1872 and 1907. Today some tourists flock to Cooktown to see the township that they learnt about in their school history books and others so they can follow in the footsteps of their ancestors.

All of the lodges, cabins, resorts and bed and breakfast accommodation properties trees in the World Heritage listed Daintree and Cape Tribulation Rainforest have been built to blend in with the natural environment with as little as possible impact on the natural resources and bio diversity of the surroundings whilst still offering guest the choice of minimalistic accommodation or the very luxury top end accommodation and food and beverage services to match.

Mission Beach is visually spectacular when you hit the beachfront esplanades. The quality and position of holiday accommodation here is spectacular to say the least and you can be assured you will find the perfect accommodation to suit your personal desires. Port Douglas is known due to the publicity that surrounded its development as an international holiday destination in the heady days of excesses in the 80’s when luxury resorts where built which in turn attracted the rich and famous and also more developers to build the wide choice of holiday options we have today. Even though Port Douglas is still on the radar of celebrities and movie makers you can still feel its warmth and laid back charm that only the tropics can offer.

The Atherton Tablelands are a destination for the tourist wanting to take a scenic drive or for the couple looking for that quaint little romantic getaway in a bed and breakfast or tree house cabin. The quality of the accommodation is very high and most accommodation places are located near the scenic attractions and the places where tourists can get involved in all the things there is to see and do on the Atherton Tablelands

The whole family really loved the Kuranda train and Skyrail and we upgraded to the Gold Class on the train and Diamond View on the Skyrail. Spent lots of time in Kuranda exploring this lovely place it was great thank you

Went and had a great day at Josephine Falls sliding down the granite rock slide was awesome but the water from the mountain bloody freezing well worth the trip it was a blast!

The family saw this tour to the rainforest and said they want to book it so we booked on line in Dubai and we are very happy we did. Billy Tea driver very good information enjoyed tour greatly thank you Adhil

We had good time Jungle Surfing with the family. Great for the young one fun on the hampster wheel thank you Adhil

Just got off the magnificent ocean freedom machine. What a vessel, what wonderfull helpful staff. I had dived before in Tahiti 20 years ago and felt comfortable, but today I could get a grip of it and with as much help and reassurance from the staff I couldn't dive today. No matter at all as the snorkelling is amazing and the barracuda swimming around the back of the boat was truly amazing. There are 4 different places to relax and we used them all at some point during the day. Money very well spent and I would recommend this to anyone at any level of competence.

Chillagoe Caves - Cairns Outback Tours

Where is chillagoe.

Chillagoe is in Northern Queensland, Australia. Chillagoe is situated 140km west of Mareeba. Chillagoe was once a thriving mining town for a range of minerals however Chillagoe now only boasts a small zinc mine and some marble quarries and it's world famous caves.

Just out of Chillagoe is the Chillagoe-Mungana Karst Caves National Park containing limestone caves.

There are between 600 and 1,000 caves in the Chillagoe-Mungana area. Chillagoe is a surprising mix of outback landscape, mining heritage, significant aboriginal art sites and fantastic world class limestone caves. Chillagoe was once a booming mining town and is now one of the favored haunts of mining buffs tracing the heady days of the 1870's to the 1920's mining boom.

Chillagoe even has its own caving club house where you can borrow caving items and stay in the accommodation overnight for a small fee.

Why should I go to visit Chillagoe Caves?

It has been stated by leading geologist Professor Ian Plimer that the Chillagoe region has the most diverse geology in the world.

Chillagoe is the Australian outback on the doorstep of Cairns - an amazing destination in a spectacular landscape spread with fantastic Karst cave systems and the debris of numerous mining ventures. Chillagoe is a haven for wildlife, with dozens of bird and animal species.

Chillagoe also has many marble mines, producing marble known for its array of beautiful colours and exported throughout the world. The township of Chillagoe is still dominated by the smelters which were built at the turn of the century by miners.

There are only a small number of mining sites in Queensland historically comparable to Chillagoe - Mount Morgan, Mount Isa, Mount Perry and Mount Elliott, and only Chillagoe retains the evidence of history of the smelting process.

The museum is another attraction in itself when visiting Chillagoe. The small local museum displays the history of Chillagoe, including: mining, smelters, caves, natural history, Aboriginal artifacts, old projectors and a mineral and marble display. Chillagoe museum is open daily from 9am to 5pm.

The history is not the only is not the only reason to visit Chillagoe, and it would a shame to leave without sampling some of the other Chillagoe attractions.

The limestone caves at the Chillagoe-Montana National Park, about one kilometer from the town is a fantastic walk and the caves feature spectacular formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The limestone caves in Chillagoe can only be entered as part of a tour, which are well managed and very informative.

From the Chillagoe limestone caves there's a walking track to the nearby Balancing Rock formation and some Aboriginal rock art. These Aboriginal artworks are estimated to be around 3500 years young according to the records of the Australian Museum.

The Chillagoe Caves have even revealed fossilized bones of crocodiles and extinct giant kangaroos and giant wombats in the carbonate-impregnated soils.

Another fascinating feature is 'The Archways' which is a stunning limestone cave attribute of Chillagoe. To view the Archways you will need your own vehicle and will need to travel west out of Chillagoe for 14 kilometers and you will find the amazing Archways.

Chillagoe Guided Cave Tours - Caving Tours Cairns

Park Ranger-guided tours to Donna , Trezkinn and Royal Arch Caves depart each day at 9.00 am, 11.00 am and 1.30 pm daily except Christmas Day and tickets must be purchased in advance from the information centre the Hub in Chillagoe.

Royal Arch Cave tour—1.6 km return (1.5 hrs) Grade: easy/moderate

From the Royal Arch Cave car park, about 6 km from Chillagoe central, a short 200 m walking track leads you to the cave entrance. This caving tour is a 600 m walk through passages and 11 chambers in one of the largest cave systems in Chillagoe. Now and again you will be hit with shafts of daylight that appear in between karst formations, and you will see cave dwelling bats echoing their way around the cave roof tops. The Royal Arch cave has been described by some as grand and impressive. It is a horizontal cave and probably the easiest to explore.

Time taken to explore this cave is around one hour and thirty minutes

Torches are given to everyone to add to the excitement of exploring the tall limestone karsts and enticing tunnels and to ensure you are able to see where you are walking. There are low overhangs in some places within the Royal Arch Cave so you may be have to be fit enough to stoop low in several sections.

Donna Cave-440 m return (1 hr) Grade: moderate

The Donna Cave car park is 1.8 km from Chillagoe. This cave features beautiful limestone columns, calcite crystals and a cave decoration in the form of the Madonna. During the 200 m walk through the cave, visitors are required to climb several steep flights of stairs; about 200 steps in total so make sure you are wearing the right feet attire and you are moderately fit. No need for hand held torches this spectacular cave has been fitted out with electricity.

Trezkinn Cave-590 m return (30-45 mins) Grade: moderate

From the Donna Cave car park, located 1.8 km from Chillagoe, a boardwalk leads to a shelter shed at the entrance to the cave. From here enjoy outstanding views of the Chillagoe landscape. Access to Trezkinn Cave is provided via a steel catwalk encircling a huge central mass of limestone. The walk through the cave is about 150 m long, with several steep flights of stairs. The sight of a magnificent 'chandelier' formation rewards the visitor. No need for hand held torches this cave has also been fitted out with electricity

Are You Keen To Go On A Self-Guided Cave Adventure?

Well here is your caving adventure opportunity but just make sure you are well prepared with the right caving attire, have plenty of water and torches with new batteries and you have notified someone of your journey and what time they can expect you to return.

The Archways-220 m return (30 mins) Grade: easy

This self-guided cave commences at the Mungana Archways car park. Follow the rocky trail that meanders through deciduous vine thicket as you navigate this semi-open cave and all its side passages. Wildlife is abundant here and in the green season this cave is well known for its Maiden Hair Ferns that line the walls. You will need to bring along a torch to explore this cave.

Pompeii Cave-600 m return (50 mins) Grade: difficult

Pompeii Cave can be accessed from the Donna Cave car park, 1.8 km south of Chillagoe. From the car park a well-formed track with many steps leads you to Pompeii Cave—a cleft in the rock filled with large boulders, the obvious remnants of a previous limestone collapse.

Inside this small dark cave, look for bats sleeping high in dark crevices and rock-wallabies scampering from boulder to boulder. A short but steep climb to the bottom reveals a dark passage and some attractive formations. You will need to bring along a torch to explore this cave.

Bauhinia Cave-300 m return (20 mins) Grade: difficult

Bauhinia Cave is accessed from the Donna Cave car park, 1.8 km south of Chillagoe. From the car park a short walk brings you to the entrance of Bauhinia Cave—a dark, narrow crevice requiring a steep scramble down large boulders. Look for interesting formations such as cave coral in this small cave. You will need to bring along a torch to explore this cave and you will definitely have to be fit to negotiate this one.

Chillagoe is situated approximately 215 kilometers west of Cairns and approximately 140km west of Mareeba. Travel time from Cairns is approximately 2.5 hours and from Mareeba around 1.5 hours. The roads are sealed to Almaden and then the last 32 klms are made up of sealed and unsealed roads. Rent a cars can access this area during the dry season but you will need to re-asses it in the green season and you will need to check with the rent a car company if you are allowed to drive on unsealed roads.

The best way to visit the Chillagoe Caves is with a professional day tour operator like our professionally guided four wheel drive tours from Cains. We visited Chillagoe caves with our kids. This was our first visit to such natural caves and we all immensely enjoyed it. The guide was very informative and told us everything we needed to know about the caves and the surrounding areas. The tour also visited the Mareeba Wetlands and we saw lots of birdlife and even some emus. This was an amazing tour and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who wants to see the outback west of Cairns.

I went on the Chillagoe Caves trip and I have to say the guide was brilliant. It was a really nice change up from the tropical side of Cairns to heading inland and getting to see the outback. The caves are well worth the visit. Thanks again Billy Tea.

I wanted a guided experience and I certainly got it. John was so friendly and he was with us for the entire day and explained everything. He even let me sit up the front as I sometimes get car sick. It was a wonderful day and I feel I really saw the rainforest in the best possible way.

As a local I do not get out in my backyard enough so I decided that I would grab my girlfriend and get of the couch and go trekking to Cape Tribulation with Billy Tea Bush Safaris. It was an early morning start but that was ok as we did not play up the night before and we were met by our driver host for the day who had a very welcoming cheesy grin to meet us. We got to ride in the brand new overland truck in the nice comfy seats that ride up high so you can see everything. Trip to Cape Trib was informative and scenic along the way and the first activity we got into was crocodile spotting. It was our lucky day as we saw a huge male and two females on the river banks. Then it was off into the magical rainforest and boardwalks and beaches. Our host gave us lots of information we would never see or learn about if we went here by ourselves so we were fully informed about the importance of preserving our rainforests and its endangered inhabitants. We went swimming in a crystal clear creek which was freezing and tasted tropical fruits that I have never been game to buy. Great BBQ lunch a play with kangaroos and wallabies and then off for some exotic tropical fruit ice cream on the journey home. We had the best day! Thank you Billy Tea for showing us our beautiful backyard you guys do it so well and your drivers are fabulous. Well done to you!

This trip, was mostly for my husband as he is a keen 4wdriver and was very excited to see the bloomfield track. But i was pleasantly suprised at just how much I enjoyed this trip. It really is for everyone. The food was of a very high standard and the guides were all very informative. The swim was my favorite, refreshing me and satisfying me for the day. Thank you billy tea safaris, for keeping us both happy.

We are so pleased we found this site and this tour. We spoke to the owner of the business when we booked and I am so happy we went with Billy Tea. The guide was very informative and explained everything in detail. We had a great day and learnt so much. We will recommend you to all our friends.

A self drive of the Daintree just did not do it for me... The Daintree and Cape Tribulation tour with Billy Tea Bush Safari's opened my eyes to how much I had missed out on during my self drive and how much more I saw while being guided! Finn, our tour guide, did an excellent job and there was nothing he couldn't answer for us in regards to the Daintree Rainforest. My Bloomfield Track photos are just stunning. We saw crocodiles on our river cruise, tasted tropical fruit, swam in Emmagen Creek and had lunch with the Kangaroos too! I am very glad I chose to travel with Billy Tea Bush Safari's.

Limestone has been weathered, dissolved and re-formed by water to create spectacular caverns and passages, decorated by stalactites, stalagmites and flowstones.

The cave tour takes you through passages and chambers in one of the largest cave systems in the area. Unexpected shafts of daylight, fig trees, glimpses of darting bats, naturally sculptured limestone formations and ancient marine fossils are highlights of this tour.  Our passengers do a slightly shorter version of the standard National Parks tour which simply skips the section that involves steep inclines and ladder access.

Several bat species roost and breed in the dark caves. Chillagoe is one of five known nesting sites for the white-rumped swiftlet Aerodramus terraereginae. The caves are also home to spotted pythons Antaresia maculosa and a variety of insects and spiders. Fossilised bones of many animals, including those of the extinct giant kangaroo, have been found in the caves.

Hand-held lamps are provided for visitors aged over five years, to add to the excitement of exploring the labyrinth of tunnels and lofty caverns.

Important Covid-19 Information

Thank you for considering the Savannahlander for your next outback rail adventure. Whilst we aim to provide an amazing outback experience, we hold the safety of our staff and passengers as our primary concern. In light of the ongoing corona virus pandemic we have taken advice and risk assessed our business practices and have come to a considered position on the vaccine status of our passengers.

In 2022 we will require all travellers on our tour packages to be double vaccinated two weeks or more before the date of travel.

We ask for proof of vaccination one month prior to travel and your tour will be cancelled if this is not received two weeks prior to travel. In the case that your travel is cancelled at this stage no refund will be available.

If you have any problems or concerns regarding this policy,  please contact our office .

As in previous years, you will be invoiced prior to departure and full payment will be due one month prior to travel.

Can I leave my vehicle somewhere?

As with a lot of rail travel, you may be driving to your chosen departure point for your journey with us on the Savannahlander.

The good news is that all of the stations along the route have space available for you to park a car.  You should note however that while all care is taken and incidents are very rare that your vehicle is parked at your own risk.

The Cairns central railway station has the provision for FREE parking for travellers on the Savannahlander.  It should be noted that Cairns Central has recently moved to “ticket-less parking” which uses cameras to read your vehicle number plates.   To access this service you should do the following:

1) Please note your vehicle registration number on your booking form.  If you change vehicles between the time of booking and the time of travel you will need to  contact our office  to update the registration details.

2) On the day please park your car as normal.

3) When you exit the parking facility simply proceed to the exit and the gate will open for you.

Please note- if you do not provide registration details you will need to pay at the pay-station prior to leaving the carpark.

Please note that if you have a large vehicle, motor-home or RV that you may need to make alternate arrangements as not all parking facilities can accommodate larger vehicles.  We would advise that you visit the station prior to departure to check or make alternative arrangements.
