  • Trivia The frequent delays caused by COVID-19 ballooned the budget to $291 million, making it the most expensive Mission: Impossible film (surpassing Fallout, $178 million), the most expensive film of Tom Cruise 's career (again surpassing Fallout), and the most expensive film ever produced by Paramount (surpassing Transformers: The Last Knight (2017) , $217 million). The insurance company Chubb originally gave Paramount only £4.4 million (about $5.4 million) for the delays, arguing that the cast and crew could still fulfill their duties to the production despite being infected with COVID-19. Paramount sued Chubb in 2021, and the two companies settled in 2022. In 2023, Chubb gave Paramount a £57 million (about $71 million) payout for the COVID-caused delays, reducing the film's budget to about $220 million, which still makes it the most expensive film for Cruise, Paramount, and the franchise.
  • Goofs Steam trains, especially moving at high speeds, need to be continuously provided with fuel, in this case coal. With the engineers killed and the controls opened all the way, the locomotive would have gradually slowed down and come to a halt as the pressure in the boiler dropped. That train would never have reached the bridge for that distance with no coal provided. Since the early 1900s, when firebox coal consumption exceeded the efforts of two men, the trains have used mechanical stokers. The coal would continue feeding without one missing coal shoveler.

Tom cruise hangs on for dear life to his 'mission' to save the movies.

Tom Cruise is back, and doing his own stunts, in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.

For some time now, Tom Cruise has been on what feels like a one-man mission to save the movies. Back in 2020, when Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One was shooting in the U.K., Cruise was recorded screaming at crew members who'd violated COVID-19 lockdown protocols, all but claiming that the industry's future rested on their shoulders. Earlier this year, Steven Spielberg publicly praised Cruise for saving Hollywood with the smash success of Top Gun: Maverick .

Now, with the box office still struggling to return to pre-pandemic levels, Cruise has become a kind of evangelist for the theatergoing experience, urging audiences to buy tickets not just to his movie, but also to other big summer titles like Barbie and Oppenheimer .

'Mission: Impossible' is back, but will you accept it, or will it self-destruct?

Pop Culture Happy Hour

'mission: impossible' is back, but will you accept it, or will it self-destruct.

Cruise's save-the-movies spirit goes hand-in-hand with his self-styled reputation as the last of the great Hollywood stars. In this seventh Mission: Impossible movie, the now 61-year-old actor and producer still insists on risking life and limb for our viewing pleasure, doing his own outrageous stunts in action scenes that make only minimal use of CGI. And so we see Cruise's Ethan Hunt, an agent with the Impossible Missions Force, or IMF, tearing up the streets of Rome in a tiny yellow Fiat, riding a motorcycle off a cliff and — in the most astonishing sequence — hanging on for dear life after a deadly train derailment.

The plot that connects these sequences is preposterous, of course, but reasonably easy to follow. In an especially timely twist, the big villain this time around is AI — a self-aware techno-being referred to as the Entity. It's an invisible menace, everywhere and nowhere; it can wipe out data systems, control the flow of information and bring nations to their knees.

'Top Gun: Maverick' is ridiculous. It's also ridiculously entertaining

'Top Gun: Maverick' is ridiculous. It's also ridiculously entertaining

Hunt and his IMF team are determined to destroy the Entity before it becomes too powerful or falls into the wrong hands. But his old boss, Eugene Kittridge, played by the sinister Henry Czerny, warns Hunt to fall in line with the U.S. government, which wants to control the Entity and the new world order to come.

This is notably the first time we've seen Kittridge since Brian De Palma 's 1996 Mission: Impossible — the first and still, to my mind, the best movie in the series. That said, the director and co-writer Christopher McQuarrie has done a snazzy job with the most recent ones: Rogue Nation , Fallout and now Dead Reckoning Part One .

Sorry, Tom Cruise Fans — New 'Top Gun' And 'Mission Impossible' Movies Delayed Again

Coronavirus Updates

Sorry, tom cruise fans — new 'top gun' and 'mission impossible' movies delayed again.

Here, he seems to be paying sly tribute to that 1996 original, even evoking its horrific early setpiece in which Hunt watched helplessly as his IMF teammates were murdered, one by one. That trauma was formative; it explains why, in movie after movie, Hunt has repeatedly put his life on the line for his friends.

If you're kept up with the series, you'll recognize those friends here, including Hunt's fellow operatives played by Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Rebecca Ferguson. You may also remember Vanessa Kirby , reprising her Fallout role as a ruthless arms broker and giving, in a single sequence, perhaps the movie's best performance. There are some intriguing new characters, too, including a wily thief, well played by Hayley Atwell, who draws Hunt into an extended game of cat-and-mouse. Pom Klementieff steals a few scenes as a mysterious assassin, as does Esai Morales as a glowering enemy from Hunt's past.

That's a lot of characters, double-crosses, chases, fights, escapes and explosions to keep track of. But even with a running time that pushes north of two-and-a-half hours — and this is just Part One — the movie never loses its grip. McQuarrie, a screenwriter first and foremost, paces the narrative beautifully, building and releasing tension at regular intervals.

Compared with the visual effects-heavy bombast of most Hollywood blockbusters, Dead Reckoning Part One feels like a marvel of old-school craftsmanship, just with niftier gadgets. Even Hunt wears his devil-may-care recklessness with surprising lightness and grace, spending much of the movie's third act on the sidelines and even playing some of his most daring escapades for laughs. Not that the actor doesn't take his mission seriously. I don't know if Tom Cruise can save the movies, but somehow, I never get tired of watching him try.

Review: Tom Cruise is out to save the movies. Is ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ enough?

It begins with a plunge into the icy deep, where a submarine is menaced by an invisible threat — a scene that induces shivery memories of “The Hunt for Red October” and “Das Boot” (and also triggers inevitable thoughts of a certain ill-fated submersible ). Then it shifts to a hot orange desert, billed as Arabia though it might as well be Arrakis , where a dust-storm pursuit gives way to some tricky sleight-of-sand. Ludicrously entertaining and even more ludicrously titled, “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” doesn’t just rack up the miles in style. Like so many globe-trotting thrillers and big-screen tourist brochures, it’s also a gleaming advertisement for Hollywood itself, a celebration and a reminder of how profoundly the movies have shaped our views of the world.

The task of saving that world once again falls to Ethan Hunt, a.k.a. Tom Cruise — and if the world can’t be saved, well, maybe at least the movies can. Or can they? Even if not, just try and stop Cruise, now 61, from taking the weight of the entire industry on his shoulders. His gargantuan cine-savior complex was apparent back in 2020, when he railed against COVID protocol violators on the U.K. set of “Dead Reckoning Part One,” captured in an audio recording that did not exactly self-destruct in five seconds. If the rant was overblown, this actor-producer is hardly alone in having bought into his own mythos: Earlier this year, Cruise was praised by none other than Steven Spielberg for having single-handedly “saved Hollywood’s ass” with the stunning success of “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Now, on the eve of this seventh “M:I” caper’s release, Cruise is playing the familiar role of the exhibitors’ evangelist, urging audiences on social media to seek out some of the summer’s biggest titles ( “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”) in theaters. The cross-studio solidarity is touching; it also reflects some of the industry’s deep existential anxieties around moviemaking and moviegoing. No single picture, no matter how successful, is going to lay those anxieties to rest, though “Dead Reckoning Part One,” with its queasily apocalyptic stakes and enjoyably kinked-up plot, at least seems to be in conversation with some of the underlying issues. Is it a coincidence that this time around, the movie’s big bad villain is artificial intelligence?

A man and a woman hang precariously inside a falling train car.

That would be something called the “Entity” — no, not the horror-movie incubus that menaced Barbara Hershey back in 1982, but rather a frighteningly self-aware robo-weapon powerful enough to bring data systems, economies and entire nations to their knees. Ethan and his loyal Impossible Mission Force gizmo experts, Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg), are tasked with neutralizing this threat before it falls into the hands of the wrong country — which, as the movie cynically asserts, pretty much means any country. Fortunately, the Entity hasn’t reached Skynet levels of techno-malevolence yet; presumably that’s still to come in “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two,” due out in theaters next year. For now, AI proves a frustratingly elusive phantom, one that acts primarily through a powerful human emissary, more devilish than angelic, named Gabriel (Esai Morales).

Flashbacks shed light on Gabriel and Ethan’s ugly, not always compelling history, which involves a confrontation, a betrayal and, surprise surprise, a beautiful dead woman. She’s a throwback to the many beautiful dead women from Ethan’s past, including three of his doomed IMF colleagues (played by Kristin Scott Thomas, Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė and Emmanuelle Béart) from the Brian De Palma-directed first “Mission: Impossible” feature (1996). Christopher McQuarrie, who directed the series’ two previous movies ( “Rogue Nation” and “Fallout” ) as well as both halves of “Dead Reckoning,” has a more restrained, less operatic visual style than De Palma (which could be said of most filmmakers). But in many respects he’s paying tribute to that 1996 caper, not only by staging a doozy of a runaway-train sequence, but also by reintroducing Ethan’s old IMF nemesis Eugene Kittridge, played once again by a banally sinister Henry Czerny.

Kittridge’s return can’t help but serve as a marker of how far Ethan, Cruise himself and this ever-durable series have come over nearly 30 years. It also suggests that the IMF, the utterly vital, eternally disavowable, brutally underloved bastard child of American intelligence, may not survive this latest and severest test of its abilities and resources. The “Dead” in the movie’s title certainly doesn’t bode well for anyone on-screen; neither does Ethan’s unnerving habit of reminding his closest colleagues that their survival means more to him than his own life. The sentiment may be cheesy, to the point where you half expect Ethan to pull off his latex mask and reveal Vin Diesel underneath. But it also reminds you that the “Mission: Impossible” movie franchise began with Ethan being framed for his teammates’ coolly premeditated murders, a formative trauma that he has never fully shaken off.

A gray-haired man and a woman share an anxious moment

For the record:

10:50 a.m. July 5, 2023 An earlier version of this review said Tom Cruise’s character maneuvered a yellow Beetle through the streets of Rome in one scene. It was a yellow Fiat.

It’s enough to make you fear for Ethan’s closest allies, among them Luther, Benji and the always-on-the-run Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), all of whom are put in varying degrees of escalating danger as the typically serpentine narrative leaps from one spectacular piece of on-location fight choreography to the next. Notably, Ethan also finds himself a new sparring partner named Grace (a terrific Hayley Atwell), a wily thief who first pops up during an undercover operation at the Abu Dhabi airport before taking Ethan on a harrowing, sometimes hilarious ride (by yellow Fiat) through the streets of Rome. That Italian escapade soon leads to another in spooky nighttime Venice, where, in tight alleys and on haunted canals, the combat takes on a murderous close-quarters intimacy.

The quality of the action here is, for the most part, more fluid and satisfying than jaw-dropping; there’s nothing here to rival De Palma’s snazziest set pieces, or Ethan’s vertiginous climb up the walls of the Burj Khalifa in “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” (2011), or his men’s room demolition derby in 2018’s “Fallout.” But McQuarrie’s typically fastidious writing (undertaken this time with Erik Jendresen) makes up for whatever his direction may lack in sheer verve. And he does pull off one major cinematic coup: a triumphantly visceral, spatially disorienting, pull-out-the-stops ripsnorter of a climax that seems designed to ensure that no one dares set a movie aboard the Orient Express ever again, for fear of inviting unfavorable comparisons.

There’s more to the story, of course, which, though relatively fleeting at 163 minutes, feels generously overstuffed for a first-parter. I haven’t yet mentioned Pom Klementieff’s role as Paris, a lethally lithe newcomer of mysterious motives, killer threads and very few words. Or Vanessa Kirby, who, reprising her “Fallout” role as a ruthless arms dealer, has only to sit in a train car with a smartphone to deliver the movie’s single most impressive performance.

Maybe that’s unfair to Cruise, who once again suffers for our pleasure like no one else, hurling himself and his motorcycle from great heights, fighting in claustrophobically tight spaces and, yes, running and running and running some more. For all that, he knows how to temper his usual superhuman self-seriousness with lightness and wit. He’s even gracious enough to cede some of the spotlight to his co-stars this time around, spending a fair chunk of the movie’s endgame amusingly on the sidelines. He returns for the big-bang finish, of course, in a spirit of goofy optimism and eternal vigilance. “Dead Reckoning Part One” ends on his watch, but the movies will not.

Tom Cruise Unveils 'Mission: Impossible' 7 Trailer and Official Title at CinemaCon

Paramount Pictures revealed the title of Mission: Impossible 7 is Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

Writer and lover of movies, TV, awards season, and Taylor Swift for EW and EW.com

tom cruise and mission impossible 7

Tom Cruise is gearing up for the release of another Mission: Impossible movie.

During a presentation at CinemaCon on Thursday, Paramount Pictures revealed the title for the seventh film in the blockbuster franchise: Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

In the action film, set to open in 2023, Cruise reprises his role as super-spy Ethan Hunt.

Despite not being in attendance physically at CinemaCon, an annual gathering of movie theater owners worldwide held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Cruise, 59, was a part of Paramount Pictures' three-hour long presentation, where he unveiled the film's title and action-packed trailer.

"Your days of fighting for the so-called greater good are over. This is our chance to control the truth," Henry Cavill, as CIA agent August Walker, tells Hunt in the trailer, adding, "You're fighting to save a deal that doesn't exist. Never did. You need to pick a side."

The trailer promises lots of car chases and peril with Vanessa Kirby back in action mode.

The footage ended showcasing Cruise's death-defying motorcycle stunt for the seventh installment that was revealed in 2021 at CinemaCon. As PEOPLE previously reported, Cruise drives a motorbike off a cliff in the hair-raising sequence.

The Mission: Impossible film saga is based on the popular television series of the same name, and the seventh iteration in the famed set of films will follow Cruise's Hunt as he takes on another mission.

Cruise previously revealed in January 2019 that the seventh and eighth Mission: Impossible films will be shot back-to-back with Christopher McQuarrie writing and directing both films.

The film opens July 14, 2023.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One: release date, reviews, trailer and everything we know about the Tom Cruise movie

What crazy stunts will Tom Cruise pull off in the latest Mission: Impossible movie?

Hayley Atwell and Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt is back to save the world once again in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , the seventh entry in the long-running franchise. Mission: Impossible movies date back to 1996 and are defined by Cruise and the incredible stunts he performs — the wire hanging scene, climbing the Burj Khalifa, doing a HALO skydive and clinging to the outside of a plane as it takes off being some of the most memorable.

Even as Tom Cruise approaches 60, the Mission: Impossible movies seemingly get better as they go along. The last entry, Mission: Impossible — Fallout , is the highest rated in the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes (97% "Fresh") and had the best box office of any of the previous movies ($791 million worldwide).

So how will Cruise raise the stakes in this new entry to the action franchise? Here's everything we know about Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One .

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One release date

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One officially arrives in movie theaters on Wednesday, July 12 in the US and two days earlier in the UK on July 10.

The release of the seventh Mission: Impossible movie is a long time coming. Mission: Impossible — Fallout was released in 2018 and the hope was that the next movie would follow quickly on its heels with a July 2020 release. However, in the early days of the pandemic it was moved from that July 2020 date to December 2020, only for it to be moved again to November 19, 2021, then to May 27, 2022, and then again to Sept. 30, 2022, before it was finally shifted to its 2023 summer blockbuster date.

Part of the reason for the delays was the challenges of doing production during the pandemic. Production was shut down multiple times, first at the beginning of the pandemic and then again in 2021 when there were cases among the crew . At one point during production, Cruise was captured on audio criticizing crew members for not following COVID safety protocols.

With the new date for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , the shift impacts Mission: Impossible 8 (which is being filmed back-to-back with to movie number seven and will presumably be called Dead Reckoning Part Two ), moving from its previous date of July 7, 2023 to June 28, 2024.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One trailer

An all new trailer for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One is now available, previewing two new big stunts in a franchise known for them and giving video games fans " Uncharted 2 vibes ." Take a look right here:

You can also check out previously released trailer and teasers directly below:

While not a trailer, footage that was shown from the 2022 CinemaCon event has been shared online. In it Tom Cruise is standing on a biplane over a gorgeous backdrop. Is there anything this man won't do for a cool looking stunt?

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One plot

Even though we're just about four months away from the movie's release, there is almost no information on what the plot of Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One is going to be. But we can assume that Ethan Hunt and his IMF team will have to race against the clock to save the world from some kind of imminent destruction (after all, if it ain't broke).

While specific plot details are being kept secret, we have gotten some inklings on what stunts Tom Cruise will be performing for audiences’ enjoyment. A behind-the-scenes look at what Cruise and company have described as his most dangerous stunt came out in December 2022.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One cast

Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Tom Cruise has been at the center of the Mission: Impossible franchise since the very beginning as IMF (Impossible Mission Force) agent Ethan Hunt. It has become one of the actor's most iconic roles in a career that also includes movies like Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick ), Risky Business and Jerry Maguire .

While there were originally thoughts Cruise would hand the franchise off to Jeremy Renner after the latter was introduced in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol , Cruise remains a constant and the driving force behind the movies (Renner left the franchise after Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation ). However, Mission: Impossible has built up a team to go along with Cruise over its last few movies.

The IMF team that supports Cruise's Ethan Hunt is led by Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell (around since Mission: Impossible ), Simon Pegg's Benji Dunn (around since Mission: Impossible III ) and Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust (around since Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation ).

There are also some tenuous allies from past movies that will be returning for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , including Vanessa Kirby's White Widow and Angela Bassett's Erika Sloane, both of whom debuted in Mission: Impossible — Fallout. There's also Henry Czerny, who played Eugene Kittridge in the original Mission: Impossible .

Making their Mission: Impossible debuts with this seventh entry are going to be Hayley Atwell ( Agent Carter , Captain America: The First Avenger ), Cary Elwes ( The Princess Bride , Stranger Things ), Pom Klementieff ( Guardians of the Galaxy ), Rob Delaney ( Home Sweet Home Alone , Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw ), Indira Varma ( Game of Thrones, Obi-Wan Kenobi ), Charles Parnell ( The Last Ship , Top Gun: Maverick ), Shea Whigham ( Boardwalk Empire , Perry Mason ) and Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock , The Favourite ).

On March 10, director Christopher McQuarrie also announced via Instagram that Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham is joining the franchise in an unspecified role.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One reviews

The reviews are in for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , and they are some of the best of the summer. In WTW's Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One review , our reviewed called it one of the most thrilling rides in the franchise.

Other critics were pretty laudatory as well, as the movie quickly became "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes and as of July 5 has a 98% score.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One director

Mission: Impossible went through four different directors with the first four movies of the franchise, including Brian De Palma, John Woo, JJ Abrams and Brad Bird. However, since Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation , the franchise has been shepherded by Christopher McQuarrie, who is once again serving as director for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One (and Mission: Impossible 8 ).

The Mission: Impossible movies have been McQuarrie's calling card as a director, though he had previously directed Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher (2012). Prior to taking over as a director, McQuarrie was best known as a writer, having penned The Usual Suspects and other Tom Cruise movies like Valkyrie , Jack Reacher and Edge of Tomorrow . McQuarrie has also written all of the Mission: Impossible movies that he has directed.

The World’s Coming After Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 7

Portrait of Rebecca Alter

Your mission — should you choose to accept it: Reveal the whereabouts of Shelly Miscavige.

Kidding, Tom Cruise . Kidding! Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to gain access to the mechanisms that sway public thought and morality, according to a villain-adjacent sales pitch by Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny) in the final trailer for the seventh Mission: Impossible film, which is laboriously called Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One. That’s some nice punctuation you have there, MI7. Where did you get it — the punctuation store ? “Hang on,” “Oh my God,” and “Go, go, go” are just some of the indelible phrases uttered in the new trailer, which also shows us explosions of trains, explosions of green substances, sexy Vanessa Kirby, a bunch of movie-critic quotes about how great it is , and no behind-the-scenes footage of Tom Cruise losing all five feet and seven inches of his shit at the film’s U.K. crew . The movie, should you choose to go see it, comes out July 12, 2023.

Mission: Impossible 7 is still on its way to theaters ... and while they're a bit delayed, they've given us a little treat — a behind the scenes video of supposedly "the biggest stunt in cinema history."

Because with what we know about this and the next Mission: Impossible movies, we've already drawn some interesting theories. We also know some of the rumored Tom Cruise films once Mission Impossible: 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 wrap .

For example, it's not a stretch to speculate that this will be the spark that ignites the grand finale of the series. So, your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to learn everything we've found out about the next chapter in Tom Cruise's excellent action movie series. And the below dossier should help with all the intel you need.

  • Mission: Impossible 7 has been pushed back yet again, to July 2023.

Mission: Impossible 7 release date

Yet another delay in Mission: Impossible 7's release sees the movie now arriving on July 14, 2023. At various times, it's been set to arrive in theaters in Sept. 2022, May 2022, November 2021 and July 2021 — so that's now a two-year delay.

It was due to hit Paramount Plus on Monday, July 11, 2022, but that will now clearly change. Based on it arriving on the streaming service 45 days after release, it would make it into your living room in late August, 2023 — but we don't yet have an official release date for that.

Deadline previously reported that M:I 7 is no longer shooting back to back with its sequel, and we also now know that M:I 8 is working to a release date of June 28, 2024.

Mission: Impossible 7 title

M:I 7's full title is Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, revealing that it's a full-on first half of a two parter. Expect a cliffhanger ending.

Mission: Impossible 7 trailer and behind-the-scenes look

While Esai Morales was supposed to be the film's major villain, it appears that the returning Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny) may be evil too. Or at least that's what the first Mission: Impossible 7 trailer tells us:

A wild motorcross-based jump sequence in Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One has been previewed by Cruise & Co. in the below nine-plus minute video.

Mission: Impossible 7 cast

The main gang is back, and they're joined by some familiar faces. That includes Cruise as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, Ving Rhames as his right-hand man Luther Stickell, Simon Pegg as Benji and Rebecca Ferguson as MI6 agent Ilsa Faust (who worked with the team in M:I Rogue Nation and Fallout).

Unfortunately, we won't get Angela Bassett back as CIA director Erika Sloan. While talking about Gunpowder Milkshake to Collider , the actress revealed that "I can't tease anything about Mission: Impossible 7 except that well, [COVID-19] took me out. Or kept me out. That's all I know about that."

We do not know the roles that Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham and Esai Morales will play, but Morales is confirmed to be the film's major villain.

  • Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt
  • Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell
  • Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn
  • Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust
  • Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis
  • Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge
  • Frederick Schmidt as Zola Mitsopolis

Mission: Impossible 7 new characters

Via the well-curated Instagram of writer-director Christopher McQuarrie , we learned of five new actors joining the Mission: Impossible 7 cast. They all look to be high-ranking members of a government organization, and McQuarrie's caption, "Welcome to The Community" suggests that the M:I movies may be adding another big piece of lore.

  • Indira Varma
  • Rob Delaney
  • Mark Gatiss
  • Charles Parnell

Mission: Impossible 7: Jeremy Renner's involvement

Notable from his absence on that list is Jeremy Renner. William Brandt didn't return for Mission: Impossible Fallout because of Renner's responsibility with Marvel 's Avengers movies. No word on if he'll come back, or if he's too busy filming the Hawkeye show for Disney Plus.

Mission: Impossible 7 trailer

No matter how secretive the microfilm is, don't believe any Mission: Impossible trailers you hear about online. The film is still under production, so we're not getting any such details yet.

Mission: Impossible 7 plot

That being said, we can gleam some details of this chapter from the above cast. The returns of Henry Czerny (as Eugene Kittridge) and Vanessa Kirby (Alanna Mitsopolis) gives us reason to think Mission: Impossible 7 will definitely have some roots in the first chapter of Cruise's M:I franchise.

That's because we last saw Kittridge as Hunt was clearing his own name in the first Mission: Impossible film, and Mitsopolis is the daughter of the Max character from the same film.

Long-running rumors say this series will end with Mission: Impossible 8, which is more reason to think M:I 7 will be deeply rooted in the franchise's first films. And this is just speculation on our part, but we wouldn't be surprised to see M:I 7 end with a cliff-hanger to be resolved in the final film, which would make sense per writer/director Christopher McQuarrie's comments to the Light the Fuse podcast.

Mission: Impossible 7 set photos

McQuarrie's already shared the first official photo from Mission: Impossible 7. As you might have predicted, Ethan's on the run in this still. And true to the franchise, it's a bit mysterious and cloudy.

A post shared by Christopher McQuarrie (@christophermcquarrie) A photo posted by on

A second photo shared by McQuarrie reveals that Faust will be wearing an eye-patch. It's up to us to wonder whether she has an ocular calamity or if this is another disguise.

Mission: Impossible 7 - An Updated Cast List, Including Tom Cruise

Mission: Impossible - Fallout main cast

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to keep following along with the Mission: Impossible film series. 25 years after the first Mission: Impossible movie’s release, we’re gearing up to reunite with Tom Cruise ’s Ethan Hunt for Mission: Impossible 7 in summer 2022. Oftentimes the longer a franchise goes, the less enjoyable it becomes, but it’s quite the opposite in Mission: Impossible ’s case. This is a cinematic saga that’s only gotten better with age.

No plot details for Mission: Impossible 7 have been revealed yet, although given that it’s shooting back-to-back with Mission: Impossible 8 , one can surmise that the two stories will be closely intertwined. But what we lack in narrative information we make up for in casting knowledge, as Mission: Impossible 7 has assembled an impressive lineup of actors. Let’s go over who’s taking part in this latest round of espionage antics, starting with the man at the front and center of this film series.

Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Seriously, it wouldn’t be a Mission: Impossible movie without Tom Cruise appearing as Ethan Hunt. Ok, maybe there will come a day where the franchise decides to focus on a new protagonist, but for now, Ethan remains the IMF agent with the best track record for saving the world. When we left off with Ethan at the end of Fallout, he was recovering from his fight with Henry Cavill ’s August Walker and bid one last goodbye to his ex-wife, Julia Meade. It’s unclear how much time will have passed between Fallout and Mission: Impossible 7 , but clearly Ethan’s healthy enough to be back out in the field. Needless to say Ethan’s been in a lot of dangerous situations over the years, so it’ll be interesting to see how Mission: Impossible 7 compares to his previous adventures .

Ving Rhames in Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Ving Rhames

Ving Rhames ’ Luther Stickell is the only character besides Ethan Hunt to appear in all the Mission: Impossible movies. Ethan enlisted Luther, a computer hacker extraordinaire, to help clear his name when he was “disavowed” by the CIA, with Luther also being an IMF agent on the outs with the U.S.’s intelligence agencies. It took some convincing to get Luther to help Ethan, but it worked out in the end. Not only were both their reputations restored, but Luther has become one of Ethan’s closest allies, having played important roles in all the movies except Ghost Protocol. Going off what little we know about Mission: Impossible 7 , it seems like Luther will once again play a supporting role rather than simply pop in for a cameo.

Simon Pegg in Mission: Impossible - Fallout

When we met Benji Dunn in Mission: Impossible III , he was an IMF technician who recovered some data that helped Ethan Hunt rescue his wife Julia. He’s since transitioned to being a field agent, although during Rogue Nation, he was forced back behind a desk during the brief time the IMF was shut down. Whether he’s working on a computer or in the middle of the action, Benji has cemented himself as one of Ethan Hunt’s most reliable teammates. That will surely still be the case in Mission: Impossible 7 , and Simon Pegg looks like he’s been having fun on the production judging by his social media posts .

Rebecca Ferguson in Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Rebecca Ferguson

Rebecca Ferguson debuted as Ilsa Faust in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation , where she was an MI6 agent working undercover within the villainous Syndicate consortium. She was integral to helping Ethan Hunt stop Solomon Lane, the Syndicate’s leader, and when Mission: Impossible - Fallout rolled around, Faust resurfaced to try and kill Lane to prove her loyalty to MI6. Things didn’t go as she planned, but by the end of Fallout, Lane was delivered to MI6 and Faust’s name was cleared, and she was last seen celebrating with the IMF team. It remains to be seen if Faust will still be working for MI6 in Mission: Impossible 7 , if she’s become part of the IMF or is now associated with a yet-to-be-revealed third party, but we can undoubtedly count on her growing closer with Ethan, as the two of them showed remarkable chemistry in their first two pairings.

Angela Bassett in Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Angela Bassett

When Alec Baldwin ’s Alan Hunley became the new IMF Secretary, Angela Bassett ’s Erika Sloane took over his old job as director of the CIA, and she was not a fan of Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible - Fallout . Furious that Ethan failed to secure the plutonium cores in favor of rescuing Luther Stickell from the Apostles, Sloane tasked Henry Cavill’s August Walker with shadowing Ethan as he tried to complete his original objective, unaware that Walker was really John Lark, the Apostles’ leader. But eventually that deception came to light, and following Walker’s death, Sloane oversaw Solomon Lane being handed over to MI6. I’m curious whether Sloane is still running the CIA when Mission: Impossible 7 rolls around or, just like what happened with Hunley, she’s now in charge of the IMF.

Vanessa Kirby in Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Vanessa Kirby

While Alanna Mitsopolis, a.k.a. The White Widow , wasn’t the main antagonist in Mission: Impossible - Fallout , she certainly didn’t make life easier for Ethan Hunt and the gang. A notorious arms dealer, Vanessa Kirby’s character obtained the plutonium after Ethan failed to secure it, giving her the leverage to make the IMF agent carry out her agenda against the Apostles, specifically by extracting Solomon Lane on behalf of her employers. However, we also learned that Mitsopolis uses the funds from her arms dealing to fund charitable causes around the world, making her more of an anti-hero than a villain. By the time Fallout ended, Mitsopolis had established a working relationship with the CIA, so it’s reasonable to think she’ll still be in league with them when Ethan Hunt runs into her during Mission: Impossible 7 .

Frederick Schmidt in Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Frederick Schmidt

Arms dealing runs in the Mitsopolis family, as Alanna was accompanied by her brother Zola, played by Frederick Schmidt, during Mission: Impossible - Fallout . After his time in the British Army, Zola used his military contacts to help expand his sister’s business, and he was around when Alanna tasked Ethan Hunt with retrieving Solomon Lane. No doubt Frederick will still be by his sister’s side during Mission: Impossible 7 . It’s also worth mentioning that during Fallout, we learned that Alanna and Zola’s mother was Max, Vanessa Redgrave’s character from the first Mission: Impossible movie who worked with Jon Voight’s Jim Phelps.

Henry Czerny in Mission: Impossible

Henry Czerny

Talk about a blast from the past! Henry Czerny’s Eugene Kittridge hasn’t been seen since the first Mission: Impossible movie, where he was the IMF director and led a manhunt against Ethan Hunt after initially believing he was the organization’s mole. Eventually it was revealed that Jim Phelps was the real culprit, and by the end of the movie, Kittridge received the stolen NOC list from Luther Stickell. It’s unclear why Kittridge stepped down from IMF, but for whatever reason, he’s returned for Mission: Impossible 7 , so hopefully we’ll learn what he’s been up to over the last few decades.

Esai Morales as Slade Wilson in Titans

Esai Morales

Now we come to the new faces populating Mission: Impossible 7 . First up, there’s NYPD Blue and Titans actor Esai Morales. Like everyone else being mentioned for the remainder of this list, the identity of Morales’ character hasn’t been officially revealed yet. All we know is that he’ll be playing the movie’s main antagonist, so get ready for him and Ethan Hunt to clash. Originally this role was going to be played by the X-Men franchise’s Nicholas Hoult , but due to scheduling conflicts, he dropped out and Morales was swiftly brought in to replace him .

Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter

Hayley Atwell

Hayley Atwell is no stranger to the world of fictional spy work, as most of you likely know her best for playing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Peggy Carter, one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s founders who was introduced in Captain America: The First Avenger and went on to live her own short-lived TV series. As far as Mission: Impossible 7 is concerned , although Atwell’s character hasn’t been revealed yet, Christopher McQuarrie described her “destructive force of nature” who will impact the main IMF team. It’s also abundantly clear from the training she’s gone through that Atwell will have some action-packed moments to shine in the movie.

Pom Klementieff as Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Pom Klementieff

Four years after she made her Hollywood debut in Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake, Pom Klementieff catapulted to worldwide fame when she debuted as Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 . Mantis now an integral member of the MCU’s team of cosmic adventurers, and Klementieff has also shown up in Uncut Gems , Thunder Force and Westworld . Now she has another opportunity to leave her stamp on another action-packed franchise by joining Mission: Impossible 7 .

Shea Whigham in Kong: Skull Island

Shea Whigham

You may not have his name memorized, but chances are you’ve seen seen Shea Whigham in at least a few projects over the years. From movies like Kong: Skull Island and Joker to TV shows like Boardwalk Empire and Perry Mason (he also co-starred alongside Hayley Atwell in Agent Carter Season 1), Whigham has been round the proverbial block. Now he’s lending his talents to Mission: Impossible 7 , although it remains to be seen, as with most of the new people joining the flick, if he’ll be a good guy or bad guy.

Rob Delaney in Deadpool 2

Rob Delaney

In the TV realm, Rob Delaney is best known as the co-creator and star of the British sitcom Catastrophe , but in recent years, he’s built up an impressive resume of film work. This includes briefly popping up as Agent Loeb in Hobbs & Shaw and a memorable appearance as the mustachioed Peter in Deadpool 2 . Mission: Impossible 7 gives him yet another opportunity to expand his action cred.

Charles Parnell in Top Gun: Maverick

Charles Parnell

Soap opera fans will remember Charles Parnell for playing Derek Frye in All My Children , while those who enjoy more intense TV might have seen him playing Russ Jeter in The Last Ship . Later this year, he’ll star alongside Tom Cruise as Rear Admiral Warlock in Top Cruise: Maverick , and half a year later, the two actors will once again be sharing the same cinematic space in Mission: Impossible 7 .

Indira Varma in Game of Thrones

Indira Virma

Indira Varma is an actress who knows her way around genre content, especially on TV. Her biggest credits include Rome and Game of Thrones , and she’s also attached to Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series , one of many forthcoming Star War shows. But Virma also has some more straightforward action experience under her belt from her time on Human Target . What does Mission: Impossible 7 hold in store for her? Only time will tell.

Mark Gatiss as Mycroft Holmes in Sherlock

Mark Gatiss

Here we have another Game of Thrones alum, although it’s likely most of you know Mark Gatiss best for his work both on BBC’s Sherlock , both as its co-creator and playing Mycroft Holmes. Gatiss’ other notable credits, both in front of the cameras and behind them, include Doctor Who , Christopher Robin , Dracula and Good Omens . By joining Mission: Impossible 7 , Gatiss has the opportunity to impress in a blockbuster setting.

Cary Elwes in Black Christmas

That’s right, folks, the man who charmed us as the Dredd Pirate Roberts all those years ago in The Princess Bride will appear in Mission: Impossible 7 . Others might know him better from movies like Glory , Robin Hood: Men in Tights , Saw and Ella Enchanted , while in recent years, he’s popped up in the Black Christmas remake and Stranger Things , to name a few projects. Elwes is well-versed in playing both good guys and bad guys, so fingers crossed we learn what role he’ll occupy in the next Mission: Impossible movie soon.

Mission: Impossible 7 is currently slated to hit theaters on May 27, 2022 , and 45 days after its theatrical debut, it’ll be available to stream on Paramount+ . For those of you out of the loop on what movies are coming out later this year, browse through our upcoming 2021 movies schedule .

Full Cast of Mission Impossible 7: Dead Reckoning - Every Main Actor & Character

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, Tom Cruise

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One brings a vast and impressive cast of actors and characters to push Ethan Hunt's story forward for the seventh time.

Although it's been five full years since the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) took the spotlight in 2018's Mission: Impossible - Fallout , Tom Cruise is back to continue the franchise's 27-year run with a brand-new summer blockbuster.

Mission Impossible 7 marks Christopher McQuarrie's second movie in this series and his ninth time working with Cruise, most recently after 2022's mega-hit Top Gun: Maverick .

And after highlighting huge names like former Superman star Henry Cavill and the MCU 's Academy Award-nominated Angela Bassett , he'll have even more A-list talent at his disposal for the first of this two-part franchise closer.

Every Actor & Character in Mission Impossible 7

1.) tom cruise - ethan hunt.

Tom Cruise, Ethan Hunt, Mission: Impossible 7

After coming out on top of the movie world in 2022 with Top Gun: Maverick , Mission Impossible 7 brings Tom Cruise back as the franchise's leading hero, Ethan Hunt.

But while this film and its sequel are said to serve as a send-off for the danger-seeking action hero, Cruise told Variety said he wants to keep making Mission: Impossible movies until he is Harrison Ford's age.

In the movie, Hunt is against a rogue AI known as the Entity. The film highlights another round of intense action for Cruise with new car chases, fights, and even a motorcycle jump off of a steep cliff.

2.) Hayley Atwell - Grace

Hayley Atwell, Grace, Mission: Impossible 7

A brand-new character named Grace will take her place in the Mission: Impossible legacy alongside Cruise, with Hollywood fan-favorite Hayley Atwell embodying the role.

Grace is a skilled thief who often butts heads with Ethan, but is ultimately an ally.

Atwell teased an "ambiguity" to her role along with her journey through the movie while McQuarrie praised Atwell and teased something "unique and new" for her role.

Best known for her role as Agent Margaret "Peggy" Carter in more than half a dozen MCU projects, she comes off a wild cameo role as the Captain Carter Variant in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness before making the jump into the spy world.

3.) Ving Rhames - Luther Stickell

Ving Rhames, Luther, Mission: Impossible 7

One of the mainstay characters in the Mission: Impossible movies is Ving Rhames' Luther Stickell, joining Cruise as one of the only actors to appear in all eight entries in this series. Luther has been Ethan Hunt's right-hand man for more than a quarter century with his skills as a computer technician and intelligence operative.

Coming out only a few weeks after Rhames returned to the MCU as Charlie-27 in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 , he continues an amazing run on the big screen as he teams up with Cruise and the newcomers in two major summer blockbusters.

4.) Simon Pegg - Benji Dunn

Simon Pegg, Benji Dunn, Mission: Impossible - Fallout

After first being introduced in 2006's Mission: Impossible III , Mission Impossible 7 marks Simon Pegg's fifth appearance as the hilarious and crafty field agent Benji Dunn. Proving to be immensely helpful in Mission Impossible 6 as he helped reveal that Henry Cavill's August Walker was a traitor, he plays just as pivotal of a role this time around.

Pegg recently reprised his animated voiceover role as Buck in The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild on Disney+, and he also boasts credits in Star Trek and Star Wars franchises, most notable in a cameo role in 2015's Episode VII: The Force Awakens .

5.) Rebecca Ferguson - Ilsa Faust

Rebecca Ferguson, Ilsa Faust, Mission: Impossible 7

Swedish star Rebecca Ferguson will make her third consecutive appearance as former MI6 Agent Ilsa Faust in Mission Impossible 7 , having most recently helped Ethan destroy plutonium-adorned bombs at the end of the last movie. She was eventually exonerated for her actions after leaving MI6 and joining Ethan Hunt's team full-time, now serving as a more public figure with IMF.

However, In Dead Reckoning , Faust is on the run after retrieving one of the keys needed to access the rogue AI's source code.

Ferguson added some major projects to her resume the last few years outside of Mission Impossible, with roles in Chris Hemsworth's Men in Black: International and both of Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies.

6.) Vanessa Kirby - Alanna Mitsopolis / The White Widow

Vanessa Kirby, Alanna Mitsopolis, Mission: Impossible 7

Introduced in Mission Impossible 6 as Alanna Mitsopolis/The White Widow, Vanessa Kirby's character was revealed to be the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave's Max, the original villain from 1996's Mission: Impossible . After taking her place in the story as a mysterious and crafty arms dealer, she eventually joined the CIA as a broker to negotiate Solomon Lane's return while helping to let Ilsa off the hook.

Dead Reckoning features Alanna's White Widow again as she arranges an important deal that involves the two keys that everyone is trying to find, which will determine the fate of the whole world.

Kirby's career is highlighted by a recurring role as Princess Margaret on Netflix's The Crown along with a role in 2019's Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw alongside Dwayne Johnson , Jason Statham, and Idris Elba . She's also rumored to be in contention for a highly-coveted role in the MCU as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman in 2025's Fantastic Four for Marvel Studios.

7.) Henry Czerny - Eugene Kittridge

Henry Czerny, Eugene Kittridge, Mission: Impossible 7

27 years after debuting in Mission: Impossible as Agent Eugene Kittridge, Henry Czerny finally makes his return in both Mission Impossible 7 and Mission Impossible 8 . He served as a catalyst for the action in the original movie by accusing Ethan Hunt of being the mole in the IMF but eventually helped Ethan and Luther recover the organization's NOC list before imprisoning the arms dealer Max.

Since then, Czerny has added a number of major roles to his resume, most recently appearing in 2022's Scream VI . He was also seen and heard prominently in Mission Impossible 7 's first trailer telling Ethan Hunt that he needed "to pick a side," teasing another round of dubious character development for this franchise veteran.

8.) Shea Whigham - Jasper Briggs

Shea Whigham

Veteran actor Shea Whigham makes his Mission: Impossible debut in this new sequel, playing a new government agent named Jasper Briggs. He's said to be working closely alongside Kittridge, serving as another kind of "opposition to Tom (Cruise) and to the IMF."

Whigham is perhaps best known for his recurring role in the Fast & Furious saga, most recently showing up in 2019's F9 . He also has credits in the comic book movie world with a role as Detective Burke in 2019's Oscar-winning Joker along with a regular role as SSR Chief Dooley in Season 1 of Marvel's Agent Carter , reuniting with Peggy Carter star Hayley Atwell in Mission Impossible 7.

9.) Frederick Schmidt - Zola Mitsopolis

Frederick Schmidt, Zola Mitsopolis, Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Zola Mitsopolis was first seen in Mission Impossible 6 , with Frederick Schmidt playing the White Widow's brother as Ethan Hunt first met the controversial arms dealer. Ending things on contentious terms by the end of that movie as Ethan, he, and the White Widow discussed Solomon Lane's handover, tensions are sure to be there between him and 'John Lark' upon his comeback.

Schmidt's career is just starting to get going toward new heights, boasting guest appearances on both Supergirl and The Flash as he expands his role in this new movie as well.

10.) Anton Valensi - Yegor Gusinski

Anton Valensi, Andor

Making his Mission: Impossible debut as Yegor Gusinski is Anton Valensi, who will shine in one of the biggest roles of his career under Christopher McQuarrie's direction.

Recently, Valensi played a minor role as a guard in three episodes of Star Wars ' hit Disney+ series Andor , and he's also confirmed to play a role in this year's highly-anticipated Dune: Part Two .

11.) Christopher Sciueref - The Buyer

Christopher Sciueref

Christopher Sciueref's character goes by the moniker of "The Buyer," being the individual initially set to purchase one of the keys from Hayley Atwell's Grace.

Sciueref provided voiceover work on 2022's LEGO Star Wars game, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga , and he also appeared in 2015's 300: Rise of an Empire (written by Zack Snyder ) and Henry Cavill's Man from U.N.C.L.E. in 2015.

12.) Esai Morales

Esai Morales, Mission: Impossible 7

After Mission Impossible 7 started production in early 2020, the initial COVID-19 shutdowns forced X-Men star Nicholas Hoult to step away from this movie's villain role due to conflicts with other projects. This led to Esai Morales taking over the role when production kicked off again.

Morales plays Gabriel, a ghost from Ethan's past and a loyal agent of the Entity (the movie's rogue AI villain).

Morales is perhaps best known for his recurring role on NYPD Blue , and he also had runs on How to Get Away with Murder and DC's Titans over the last few years.

13.) Pom Klementieff - Paris

Pom Klementieff, Mission: Impossible 7

Joining the fray as one of Mission Impossible 7 's villains is Pom Klementieff's Paris.

Klementieff was described as "somebody who...is partnered with Esai (Morales)" at the start of the movie and "represents this malevolent force" opposite Ethan Hunt.

Klementieff has had a busy summer already, having returned possibly for the final time as the MCU's Mantis in the highly-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May. She also had a cameo role in The Suicide Squad under James Gunn and appeared in highly-praised projects like Westworld and Uncut Gems .

14.) Mariela Garriga - Marie

Mariela Garriga

Cuban rising star Mariela Garriga will join the biggest projects of her young career in Mission Impossible 7 and its sequel.

Garriga plays a mysterious woman from Ethan Hunt's past who was killed by Gabriel.

Thus far. Garrgia's most notable appearances come with guest spots on shows like NCIS , Law & Order: Special Victims Unit , and NCIS: Los Angeles .

15.) Greg Tarzan Davis - Degas

Greg Tarzan Davis

Greg Tarzan Davis' plays Degas, the partner of Shea Wingham's Briggs, who stands in the way of Ethan Hunt as he goes on his next mission.

Although he only has a little more than a dozen credits on his resume, Davis is best known for his role alongside Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick , where he played Top Gun graduate "Cyclone" in the massive 2022 blockbuster.

16.) Charles Parnell - NRO

Charles Parnell

Continuing his excellent appearances on the big and small screen, Charles Parnell plays one of the heads of the Community, representing the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) in Mission Impossible 7.

Most recently, Parnell played a key role in The Mandalorian Season 3 as the Survivor Captain on Mandalore following his supporting role as Warlock alongside Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick . He also provided the voice of Nick Fury in the much-maligned Marvel's Avengers video game that debuted in 2020.

17.) Rob Delaney - JCSO

Rob Delaney

In Dead Reckoning , Rob Delaney plays one of the heads of the Community, representing the JSOC aka Joint Special Operations Command.

Delaney may be known most for his role as the fan-favorite member of Fox's X-Force, Peter, alongside Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 2 , and he's even been used as part of updates for the progress being made on Marvel Studios' Deadpool 3 .

18.) Cary Elwes - Director Denlinger

Cary Elwes

Mission Impossible 7 will get another actor with a veteran presence in Cary Elwes, who most recently starred in Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre alongside Jason Statham and Aubrey Plaza .

Elwes plays Denlinger, the Director of National Intelligence, in the movie.

Elwes is best known currently for his recurring role on Netflix's Stranger Things , his resume is filled with iconic roles. Although TV shows like The Marvelous Ms. Maisel , Psych , and The X-Files have given him fame, his most memorable role came in The Princess Bride , where he led the way as Westley in the 1987 classic.

19.) Indira Varma - DIA

Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible 7 Title Changed - What This Could Mean For The Franchise

Three Ethan Hunts composite

After several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie debuted "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One" in July 2023 to critical acclaim. Widely considered one of the best films in the long-running franchise, "Dead Reckoning Part One" was, unfortunately, a financial disappointment for Cruise and Paramount Pictures, grossing just $568 million worldwide – far from a franchise low but failing to usurp its 2018 predecessor's whopping $792 million haul. The film, which reportedly lost north of $25 million, received mediocre receipts thanks in part to the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon, which dominated multiplexes just a week after the Cruise production debuted.

Then, according to Deadline , one week before the flick's release on Paramount+, Paramount Pictures dropped "Part One" from the title, ostensibly making it a stand-alone. This may seem inconsequential, but it's actually a brilliant, if slightly reactionary, decision to bring more audience members on board for Ethan Hunt's next "Mission." Initially, both "Dead Reckoning" and its now-untitled sequel were set to be shot back-to-back, making them true two-parters in the same vein as "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" or "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn," but ultimately, this wasn't the case, with "Mission: Impossible 8" still in production as of publication and set to debut in May 2025, nearly two years after "Dead Reckoning."

Mission: Impossible 8 won't be titled Dead Reckoning Part Two

It has long been argued that the box office crash of "Dead Reckoning" was caused not by "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" but in part thanks to its title, which suggested to audiences that they were getting an incomplete film. While "Dead Reckoning" expertly sets up its sequel, however, it doesn't end on a cliff-hanger, making dropping "Part One" a pretty sound, albeit last-minute, decision — Paramount Pictures didn't make the change in time for the film's Blu-ray release, meaning local retailers are still selling copies with "Part One" plastered all over them.

Meanwhile, the studio confirmed in October 2023 that the "Dead Reckoning Part Two" subtitle has been dropped from the now-untitled sequel. We have no idea what that picture will be called as of publication, but thankfully, because it's still in production — and the Christopher McQuarrie-directed "Mission: Impossible" films tend to wing it most of the time — he and Tom Cruise have plenty of time to figure it out.

Will we get more Mission: Impossible films?

The titles "Dead Reckoning Part One" and "Part Two" had significant narrative implications for the "Mission: Impossible" series because they carried a sense of finality. Indeed, the two films were set to be a send-off for Ethan Hunt. However, the week before the release of "Dead Reckoning," Tom Cruise came out and said that he'd like to continue making "Mission: Impossible" films until he's as old as Harrison Ford.

With the actor having since  signed a massive film deal with Warner Bros. , it's unclear if that will happen. Although we don't know what Cruise and the studio will be cooking up, the deal isn't exclusive, which means that he and Paramount Pictures could still work together. At the same time, the maverick superstar and the latter studio are clearly frustrated with one another, as detailed by  The Hollywood Reporter .

What's interesting is that we don't know if the "Dead Reckoning" title pivot is a Cruise or Paramount decision (or maybe it's both?), but if you dig deeper into their growing rift, as well as the financial receipts of "Dead Reckoning," it's clear that something is up and a conscious decision is being made to rebrand the latest entry in the marquee franchise. "Mission: Impossible 8" cruises into theaters in May 2025.

Mission: impossible 7's box office disappointment makes replacing tom cruise so much harder.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was a box office disappointment, and this failure will make it even harder to replace Tom Cruise.

  • The box office disappointment of "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" makes replacing Tom Cruise even harder.
  • Competition and franchise knowledge were factors working against the film's success.
  • There's speculation on whether Tom Cruise will leave the franchise, but replacing him will be immensely difficult.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was a huge box office disappointment, which makes the act of replacing Tom Cruise so much harder. Although Cruise has been the face of the Mission: Impossible movie series since the very beginning, there has been some speculation as to whether he will be replaced, allowing another star to lead the franchise into the future. However, this seems unlikely after the failure of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , with it being near impossible to pull this trick off in the face of the box office returns.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was meant to be the most ambitious entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise, with it making the bold move to market itself as the first half of a two-part saga. However, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One 's $565.7 million disappointment left a lot to be desired, causing the studio to attempt to recoup what the failure did to the franchise. While the seventh film was critically acclaimed, it had a lot of competition in the form of Barbie , Oppenheimer , and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny , with these facts shaking up the franchise's future.

Mission: Impossible 8 - Release Date, Story & Everything We Know About Dead Reckoning Part 2

Mission: impossible – dead reckoning struggled even with tom cruise, the movie faced stiff box office competition and took a big risk releasing as a duology.

Replacing Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible franchise will be even harder now , as the seventh movie in the series struggled even with the help of Tom Cruise. Cruise is one of the biggest stars currently working today, with him headlining the massive 2022 box office success that was Top Gun: Maverick . Fresh off the back of Top Gun: Maverick , it was expected that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One would be a massive hit, helped by the lead actor's star power. However, this didn't happen, as too many factors were working against the film.

One of the biggest factors working against Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was its competition, with it being released soon after the newest Indiana Jones movie and quickly losing its IMAX screenings to Oppenheimer . The film is also the seventh entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise, with this hurdle of franchise knowledge turning a lot of viewers off from watching the movie. On top of all that, the film was also marketed as part one of a duology, something that has been known to not appeal to audiences.

Will Tom Cruise Actually Leave Mission: Impossible Behind?

Age and a big warner bros. deal point to cruise not being long for the franchise.

While there has been a lot of speculation as to who will replace him, it still isn't known if Tom Cruise will actually leave Mission: Impossible behind. Much of Cruise's recent work has been on Mission: Impossible movies, with his dedication to the franchise far exceeding that of any other series he has been involved with. Tom Cruise's entire persona of an action star who does his own stunts comes from Mission: Impossible , and leaving the franchise would be a big career decision in the face of this.

Despite Cruise's association with Mission: Impossible , he will inevitably have to leave the franchise behind at some point. Even if he doesn't want to, Cruise will eventually get too old to continue Mission: Impossible , so now would be as good a time as any. Cruise ending his run with the franchise on a massive two-part finale would be a fantastic way to go out, allowing another character to take over in the future. Plus, Tom Cruise's recent deal with Warner Bros. means that a lot less of his time will probably be spent at Paramount, which owns Mission: Impossible .

Can Mission: Impossible Really Replace Tom Cruise If He Does Leave?

When Tom Cruise truly does leave Mission: Impossible , the franchise will have to replace him if it wants to continue on, something that will be immensely hard to do. A pre-existing Mission: Impossible actor like Jeremy Renner or Hayley Atwell could become the franchise's main character, but they simply aren't grand enough to fill Tom Cruise's shoes. The other option would be to bring a new actor in, but replacing Tom Cruise with an all-new character might be a move that some viewers aren't fans of.

Mission: Impossible's 10 Best Deleted Scenes

If Mission: Impossible doesn't want to replace Tom Cruise in the franchise as-is, there are some other options. A Mission: Impossible reboot could allow a new batch of characters to come in and make names for themselves, redefining the franchise for a new generation. The franchise could also simply end after the next Mission: Impossible movie, wrapping up after it concludes the story of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One .

All Mission: Impossible movies (except Dead Reckoning Part One ) are available to stream on Paramount+.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning is an action-adventure spy thriller from director Christopher McQuarrie. It's the seventh entry in the Mission: Impossible series and a direct sequel to Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The title will star Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ving Rhames.

Hayley Atwell and Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One from Paramount Pictures and Skydance.

SPOILER ALERT:  This story discusses the ending of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” currently playing in theaters.

“Dead Reckoning,” the seventh installment of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, is the latest Hollywood blockbuster to be split into two movies, but Tom Cruise and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie tried their hardest to give “Part One” a non-cliffhanger conclusion. The filmmaker recently told Total Film magazine that thinking about how to conclude the first of two movies kept Cruise up at night during the filming of “Part One.”

Popular on Variety

McQuarrie continued, “Tom kept looking at that scene, and he had all this anxiety about whether or not it would be a satisfying conclusion or whether it would feel open-ended. We constantly revisited it, constantly refined it.”

Unlike “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” which threw moviegoers a curveball by ending on a massive cliffhanger (its second part, “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” arrives in March 2024), “Dead Reckoning Part One” ends with Cruise’s Ethan Hunt achieving his immediate goal (he secures the key to unlock the source code of The Entity, the film’s villainous AI program) and Hayley Atwell’s Grace accepting an offer to join the IMF. There are dangling plot threads for “Part Two” to pick up (chief among them being that the film’s human villain, Esai Morales’ Gabriel, is still alive), but at least one mission has reached its definitive end. This is a far more conclusive ending than “Spider-Verse,” which leaves viewers hanging as Miles Morales is stuck in an alternate universe with the Prowler-version of himself.

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” is now playing theaters nationwide from Paramount Pictures. “Part Two” is set to open on June 28, 2024.

Vanessa Kirby, Hannah Waddingham, Hayley Atwell and Simon Pegg are all set to star alongside Cruise. The film will release in May 2025.

Filming first began in May 2022 but was halted due to writers' and actors' strikes. Mission Impossible is the 17th highest-grossing film series of all time. Created by Bruce Geller, the first instalment released 28 years ago in 1996.

Cruise, who was 34 years old when he was first cast in the iconic role, previously hinted there could be even more to come from the franchise.

Speaking about Indiana Jones' Harrison Ford last year, he told the Sydney Morning Herald: “Harrison Ford is a legend. I hope to still be going. I’ve got 20 years to catch up with him.” He continued: “I hope to keep making Mission: Impossible films until I’m his age.”

Ford bid farewell to the daredevil archaeologist at the age of 80 years old with final instalment Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Meanwhile, Netflix's Ripley star Dakota Fanning recently revealed that Cruise gifted her her first ever mobile phone - and still sends her birthday presents every year. The actress starred in the 2003 romcom Uptown Girls with the Cruise.

She revealed Cruise's dedication to her birthday tradition during an interview alongside Ripley co-star Andrew Scott for Harper's Bazaar earlier this week. Andrew was asked: "Who gave Dakota her first cell phone?" To which he guessed: "Okay, well it's gotta be some Hollywood icon... Tom Cruise?"

Dakota confirmed: "Yes!" while adding: "It was a Motorola Razr," before her co-star asked: "Wow! Were you so excited?"

"Oh my God, I was so excited," Dakota replied. "I didn't have anyone to call or text at the time. You know, I was 11...But I loved having it!" The actress revealed she "still keeps in touch" with the actor, adding: "Tom still sends me a birthday gift every year and has since that birthday."

  • Action-packed scenes feature Cruise sprinting to save the world from rogue AI, captivating audiences globally.
  • Mission: Impossible 8 plot remains a mystery, but it will likely continue the story with The Entity and familiar faces.

Hollywood icon Tom Cruise is back to doing what he does best, running, as the actor films scenes for the action sequel Mission: Impossible 8 in London, England. Fans of the actor and the franchise have now taken to Twitter/X to share images, footage, and their thoughts on Cruise’s running, which somehow remains one of the most gripping elements of modern blockbuster moviemaking.

You can check out the visual poetry that is Tom Cruise running below, as well as some thoughts and feelings shared by fans who cannot wait to see him run all over the world once again in Mission: Impossible 8 .

Several images of the actor sprinting either away or towards the latest global threat have also emerged, and offer our first look at the next Mission: Impossible sequel, which was formerly titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two before changes were made behind the scenes .

Released in July last year, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is directed by Christopher McQuarrie from a screenplay he co-wrote with Erik Jendresen. The Mission: Impossible follow-up finds Tom Cruise back as Ethan Hunt, who this time must save the world from a rogue AI known as “The Entity.” You can check out the official synopsis and trailer for Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning below.

“Ethan Hunt and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: to track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With the fate of the world at stake, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.”

What Will Mission: Impossible 8 Be About?

It is currently unknown exactly what Mission: Impossible 8 will be about but, considering that movies 7 and 8 were initially intended to be a two-parter, we can no doubt expect the next movie to carry over some of the plot elements from its predecessor. This likely includes both the AI enemy known as The Entity , and the villainous Gabriel (Esai Morales), a terrorist with ties to Ethan Hunts's past. We can also expect to see the core cast return, including Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, and Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, as well as newcomer Hayley Atwell as Grace.

How the Mission: Impossible Title Change Could Save the Franchise

The rest of the ensemble will reportedly include Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, Pom Klementieff as Paris, and Shea Whigham as Jasper Briggs, alongside Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, and Lucy Tulugarjuk. Following the apparent fate of Ilsa Faust , it is currently unknown whether Rebecca Ferguson will be involved.

Mission: Impossible 8 is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 23, 2025, by Paramount Pictures.

Dressed in a navy jacket and jeans, Tom chatted with director Christopher McQuarrie and production staff inbetween scenes.

Just a few weeks ago, Tom stunned tourists as he sprinted through the city covered in blood , shutting down Central London.

In exclusive photos from the set, he was seen running over Westminster Bridge with army and police officers on his tail.

The Mission Impossible team have been filming at  Surrey’s  Longcross Studios as well as on location since the beginning of March.

Determined to stick to schedule by any means necessary, at one point Tom forked out for the  entire cast and crew to be flown to set by helicopters  after the M25 shut down.

Little is known about what will happen in the eighth instalment of the series - only that it will  follow on from Dead Reckoning , which was released last year.

Originally titled Dead Reckoning: Part Two, the new film has since dropped being considered a second part and will instead go by its own name.

Reasons for this are unknown but rumours have varied from the film going in a completely different direction to what was initially planned, to the name being scrapped due to Part One's lacklustre success at the box office.

Starring alongside Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby and Simon Pegg among others, Dead Reckoning went on to get two Oscar nominations for sound and visual effects.

However, despite raking in $565.8million worldwide at the box office, Dead Reckoning failed to meet the necessary returns to break even from its $291million budget.

On average, taking into account promotional costs etc, a film needs to make 2.5x its budget in order to be considered a financial success.

This was hindered slightly by the global phenomenon of  Barbenheimer   (the release date of Barbie and Oppenheimer)  which came just two weeks after Dead Reckoning's, causing a drop off in potential sales.

Currently, the as-yet-untitled Mission Impossible 8 is scheduled to be released on May 23, 2025 after a string of  pushbacks due to the pandemic  and last year's SAG-AFTRA strikes.

It was initially meant to be ready for release in August 2022, before being delayed to November 2022, July 2023 and June 2024.

Mission Impossible : Dead Reckoning, partie 2

War of the Worlds' Dakota Fanning Still Receives Birthday Gifts from Tom Cruise After 19 Years

Despite working together 19 years ago, Tom Cruise still gets his War of the Worlds co-star a birthday gift every year.

  • Tom Cruise's generosity is legendary in Hollywood - he even sends Dakota Fanning a birthday gift every year since they worked together.
  • Many big Hollywood names receive Cruise's Christmas cake, including Kirsten Dunst, Tom Hanks, and Jon Hamm - a coconut Bundt cake.
  • Cruise's kindness goes beyond gifts - he once covered his sister's college tuition with his first big paycheck.

Despite only working together on one movie, nearly two decades ago, Dakota Fanning has confirmed that Tom Cruise still gives her a birthday gift every year. The pair worked together on 2005's War of the Worlds , an action-heavy adaptation of H.G. Wells' seminal sci-fi novel. Fanning was just 11 years old when she starred in Steven Spielberg's adaptation, with Cruise being 43 at the time.

In a recent interview with Harper's Bazaar , Fanning was asked who gave her the first cellphone she owned. Jokingly, fellow interviewee Andrew Scott said "It's gotta be some Hollywood icon. Tom Cruise?" to which Fanning coolly replied "Yeah!" Fanning went on to say it was a Motorola Razr and that "I didn't have anybody to call or text at that time... I loved having it."

Fanning then revealed that Cruise has bought her a birthday gift every year since they worked together, even now. "Tom sends me a birthday gift every year since that birthday. That's really nice." The pair haven't worked on any movies since War of the Worlds , but they clearly still keep in touch. Fanning didn't divulge what any other gifts were.

Tom Cruise is Famous in Hollywood for His Gifts

While Cruise buying Fanning a birthday gift every year for the past 19 years seems generous, it's actually a small part of Cruise's reputation as a generous actor. The Tom Cruise Christmas Cake list is almost as iconic as the actor's tendency to run in every movie he stars in. While the number of people on the list is unknown, 14 actors (according to People ) have publicly spoken about Cruise's Christmas cake. As well as getting a birthday present, Fanning is also on Cruise's cake list.

As you would expect, the list features some big Hollywood names. Kirsten Dunst , Glen Powell, Angela Bassett, Hayley Atwell, Rosie O'Donnell, Jay Ellis, Cary Elwes, Tom Hanks, Jon Hamm, Miles Teller, Cobie Smulders, Graham Norton, and Brooke Shields have all spoken about Cruise's signature cake. The cake comes from the actor's favorite bakery, Doan's Bakery in California, and is a coconut Bundt cake with white chocolate and cream cheese frosting. Dunst recently revealed that she actually receives two cakes as her husband, Jesse Plemons, also gets the same cake from Cruise.

That still isn't the most generous thing Cruise has done for his friends and family. During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show in 2018, Cruise and the rest of his Mission: Impossible - Fallout cast mates revealed what they did with their first big paychecks. After Henry Cavill said he bought himself an Aston Martin, Cruise said he used his first paycheck to cover his sister's college tuition.

Fanning currently stars in Netflix's Ripley alongside Andrew Scott . The Limited Series adapts Patricia Highsmith's acclaimed novel The Talented Mr. Ripley , and follows the titular con-man after being hired by a wealthy father to travel to Italy and convince his spoiled son to return home.
