Pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi was born in Turin on November 23rd 1955. Perhaps it was his mother, an amateur pianist, who first introduced him to music, planting the seeds for what would become an illustrious career. He began to study music at the Conservatory of Turin and graduated under Azio Corghi at the Conservatory of Milan, and then studied with Luciano Berio, becoming his assistant, and with Karlheinz Stockhausen. In 1982 his talents won him a scholarship to the Tanglewood Music Festival, where he first came into contact with American minimalism. He spent the next several years composing for the ballet, the cinema and the theater, including “Sul filo d’Orfeo” (1984), “Time out” (1988), “The Wild Man” (1991), and “Salgari” (1995), as well as numerous pieces for orchestra and ensemble, which were performed at La Scala of Milan, the Paris Ircam and Lincoln Center, in New York. With the album “Stanze” (1992), a collection of sixteen compositions for harpist Cecilia Chailly, he set off on “a journey towards essentiality, trying to achieve the maximum expressive intensity using the minimum indispensable”. But it was with “Le Onde” [ The Waves ] (1996), his first solo album, inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel, that he truly caught the piano world’s attention, and built on that with his next release, “Eden Roc” (1999), in which he played with a string quintet and duduk master Djavan Gasparyan, and “I giorni” (2001), a cycle of ballads for piano inspired by a trip to Mali. He returned to Africa two years later at the invitation of the Festival au Desert. A new album, “Diario Mali”, with kora master Ballaké Sissoko, blossomed from this experience. The score he wrote in 2002 for the remake of “Doctor Zhivago” triumphed at the New York Film Festival, confirming the increasing prestige of his soundtracks: “Not of This World” (2000), “Light of My Eyes” (2001), “Strange Crime” (2004), “This is England”, film (2004) and TV series (2010), “The Untouchables” (2011), “Samba” (2014), “The water diviner” (2015) and “The third murder” (2017). He began performing in increasingly important venues.  The live concerts at La Scala of Milan, also recorded on disc, as well as the special concerts at the Hangar Bicocca and the Royal Albert Hall, marked the coronation of full artistic expression. In his next studio album, “Una mattina”, released in 2004, Einaudi’s music becomes more concentrated and introspective, while in the following “Divenire” it expands, driven by the sonorities of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Both records, which were already topping the classical charts, also crossed over into the pop charts, a first. He was the only classical musician to play at the first iTunes festival. During the extended world tour that followed, he never stopped writing new music. In 2009 he released “Cloudland”, with Robert and Ronald Lippok, and “Nightbook”, a nocturnal, introspective work that “projects the piano in every direction, like a shadow”. The peak performance of his European and American tour was once again at the Royal Albert Hall, recorded live and released as a double CD and DVD. For two consecutive summers he conducted the Orchestra della Notte della Taranta, exercising a visionary musical direction that left a mark in the traditional music of the “black land of the tarantola ”. In 2013 he released “In a time lapse”, a reflection on time, recorded in a monastery and “conceived as a suite or as the chapters of a single novel”, in which his piano was accompanied by strings, percussion and electronic tracks. The world tour that followed featured many remarkable performances, such as the concerts at the Sidney Opera House and at the Arena of Verona in particular, but also the acclaimed “Piano Africain” performance, for six pianos and six balafons and marimbas, which opened the Piano City Milano festival in 2014. The album “Elements”, released in 2015, sprang “from the desire to start anew, following different paths”. Recorded over a span of three months in his home studio in the Langhe countryside, “while spring was exploding”, the album became “a map of thoughts and feelings, points, lines, shapes and fragments of an ongoing interior flow through myth, Euclid, the periodic table and Kandinsky’s writings.” During the next three years, the “Elements” tour sold out both the world’s premier pop arenas and the most renowned classical concert halls. In 2016 he performed his “Elegy for the Arctic”, commissioned by Greenpeace, on a floating platform amidst the ice in the Arctic Ocean. The same year marked the debut of “Dieci Notti” at Teatro Dal Verme, in Milan, which would become an annual concert series with special events, “to give back something to a city that has given me so much”.

Emerging from long winter walks in the mountains, “Seven Days Walking” is an ambitious and visionary project of seven records, released monthly from March to October 2019, representing as many variations around the same imaginary route, “following the meandering creative process as in a labyrinth, among the forms denuded by the cold, in a kind of extreme essentiality”. At the same time as the cadenced album releases, he resumed touring major American and European venues, including seven consecutive sold-out shows at London’s Barbican. Also in 2019, he wrote the original music for “Mary said what she said” about the life and torments of Mary Stuart, directed by Bob Wilson, starring Isabelle Huppert and produced by the Théâtre de la Ville de Paris. He was also commissioned by the Teatro Massimo in Palermo to compose the opera “Winter Journey”, with the original libretto by Colm Tóibin and direction by Roberto Andò: a journey through the desolate winter of today’s Europe. Both works confirmed the composer’s maturity and depth in musical theatre. Performances and world tours were interrupted by the pandemic, but some of his music from “Seven Days Walking” and “Elements” continued to walk on its own, in the two most awarded films of the season: “Nomadland” by Chloé Zhao, (six Oscars, two Golden Globes and the Golden Lion in Venice) and “The Father”, by Florian Zeller. Much of his musical production for the big and small screen is collected in a double album with the title “Cinema” which was released in June 2021, preceded by two collections recorded during the lockdown and released in 2020: “12 songs from home”, played on the piano at home, and “Einaudi Undiscovered”, a series of lesser-known songs, memories, surprises and rediscoveries selected by the composer. In the summer of 2021, Einaudi took his music back to nature, in a series of eleven concerts immersed in the breathtaking scenery of national parks, nature reserves, creeks, valleys, lakes and pristine mountain meadows, reachable only on foot, at dawn, at dusk and under starry skies. An invitation to merge the musical experience with the natural landscape. But it was the experience of suspended time during the lockdown, “with the world outside quiet and silent”, that led to the new solo piano album, scheduled for release in 2022 and entitled “Underwater”, “a metaphor for fluidity without external interference”. A fresher and more immediate approach to music, in the flow of emotions, in an intimate conversation, face to face, with the piano”.

ludovico einaudi tour california

The most streamed classical artist of all time, Ludovico Einaudi returns to the Kennedy Center fresh from his recent triumphs composing the scores to acclaimed films The Father and six-time Oscar-winner Nomadland . Witness the famed pianist LIVE performing works from Underwater , his first new solo album in 20 years. Born in lockdown, Underwater displays the virtuoso’s unmistakable sound in its purest and most intimate form: just Einaudi and his piano.

Underwater features 12 transcendent solo piano tracks, beautifully showcasing Einaudi’s luminous, emotive, effortlessly lyrical, and supremely refined sound. This new album embraces the simple purity of songwriting, each note touched with an innocent, delicate beauty.

On the making of Underwater during the pandemic, Einaudi explains: “The music came naturally, more than ever before. I felt a sense of freedom to abandon myself and let the music flow differently. I didn’t have a filter between me and what came out of the piano; it felt very pure. The title Underwater is a metaphor—it is an expression of a very fluid dimension, without interference from outside.”

Underwater follows an exciting year for Einaudi, which saw the release of the soundtracks to Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe-winning films Nomadland and The Father (which include tracks from his immensely popular 2019 release Seven Days Walking ), compilation album Cinema , showcasing Einaudi’s composition achievements in film and TV, and new podcast mini-series Experience: The Ludovico Einaudi Story , which features celebrated filmmakers including multiple award-winning actor and director Russel Crowe ( Gladiator ), Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao ( Nomadland ), Academy Award winner Florian Zeller ( The Father ), Shane Meadows ( This is England ) and Eric Toledano ( The Intouchables ).

Einaudi is one of the most ubiquitous contemporary composers of the century, repeatedly topping the classical charts globally, and becoming the biggest streamed classical artist of all time. Einaudi transcends generations and, in addition to his chart and streaming accolades, enjoys more than 1 million YouTube subscribers, 10 million views, and 150 thousand pieces of content on TikTok.

An unforgettable experience! Though I prefer smaller venues of his past shows compared to gaguntum that is Sony Centre, the sold out crowd was a testament to the reach of his genius and the demand for such musical style.

Live music always sounds better than the album or on-air. And to witness your favourite living composer live is nothing short of magical. There are melodies linked to people and memories in my life and this night so many moments flashed before my eyes. I smiled, I cried. I pondered abot music's beautiful ability to cross human boundaries and tensions without uttering a single word. Thank you Ludo!

Concert was just as expected: amazing, if you like his mix of melodic and simple piano composition with dramatic multi-instrument "crescendo" pieces, good for movie tunes.

A bit disapointing was that in some pieced you could hear violins or drums that no one of the band was playing (though they did at other instances). So at times thete was a little too obviously the Synthetizer in chareg where perhaps rwal instruments could be used.

Scandalous was the leg space on the ranks. Some may know that in this multi-functional bull fighting arena this can be an issue, but I got there and had cramps afterwards just from avoiding as mch as possible knocking my knees into the people before me. And I am not too tall (1.85m). If I haf the energy I would probably try getting money bak from the organisers, because selling sears for 45eur without any indication that they are unsuitable for people taller than 1.70m is unethical, and greedy!!

Ludovico Einaudi: Tiny Desk Concert

Kara Frame 2018 square

Credit: NPR

Ludovico Einaudi was on a North American tour, playing before audiences in the thousands, when he stopped by the NPR office to play a far more intimate setting: a Tiny Desk set. It's the first tour for the Italian pianist and composer since the beginning of the pandemic, following the release of his 2022 album, Underwater . It's an album that captures how many have felt in the pandemic — feeling underwater, or trapped in another world.

It's that relatable feeling — like we're treading water trying to remain above the surface, powering through the adversity of the last two years — that makes Einaudi's music so emotional and reflective. The pulsating strings of the opening song to his Tiny Desk concert, the track "Experience" from his 2013 album In A Time Lapse , demand attention, captivating the audience. The fact that the song recently went viral due to a TikTok trend only proves how welcoming Einaudi's music is — and why he is the most-streamed classical pianist of all time.

Ludovico Einaudi's presence at the piano keeps you waiting for more. His fingers glide over the keys effortlessly, but he never seems rushed. As he plays, his eyes are closed. And in this concert, you can tell his music moves him as much as it does his audience.

Ludovico Einaudi

Italian composer and pianist Ludovico Einaudi is set to kick off a new North American tour Friday evening (June 29) at Shubert Theatre in Boston. The Essential Einaudi tour will see the veteran musician hitting cities across the United States and Mexico for the first time in his career.

The intimate, 11-date route will have the composer — whose music has been heard in dozens of film, television and commercial scores — play his debut show at Radio City Music Hall in New York on June 30 along with stops in Montreal and Mexico City. For the first time, Einaudi will play Texas, North Carolina and Georgia.

“I am very excited to get the vibe and the action from the audience in these new places that I have never played,” Einaudi tells Billboard . “I don’t have any idea of what the vibe will be, but I am sure it will be great.”

The Italian pianist spent last summer touring his latest album, Elements , at prestigious venues throughout Europe, including Waldbuhne in Berlin, Terme di Caracalla in Rome, Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens and Palacio Vistallegre in Madrid. He also performed at the famed Dubai Opera in February, selling out back-to-back shows.

As an instrumental musician, Einaudi feels it is easier to share his music throughout the world without diluting it with translations.

“I am very happy to be able to cross borders to go to China, to Mexico, to America, everywhere and there is an instant understanding of what I do,” Einaudi says. “This is incredibly beautiful because you’ve suddenly communicated with everyone without speaking the same language. The language of music is able to go anywhere.”

Einaudi has been playing and composing music since the 1980s, and in 2013, he became the first classical musician to play the iTunes Festival in London with artists like Arctic Monkeys, Lady Gaga and Kendrick Lamar. His 2015 release, Elements , an opus inspired by nature, matter, sound and color, hit No. 3 on Billboard ‘s Classical Albums chart and helped garner a million Spotify listens.

The North American tour will have Einaudi playing more intimate venues like Sony Centre for Performing Arts in Toronto and Filene Center at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia.

“I prefer to play in smaller venues because I like the intimacy, the connection with the audience,” Einaudi says. “Generally, I prefer the sounds of the smaller places.”

Essential Einaudi will feature a six-piece accompaniment onstage with the composer, with multi-instrumentalists playing violin, cello, organ, synthesizers and electric, acoustic and bass guitar. The three-part show includes work from earlier in his career, his newest album, and many numbers that have been featured in scores. Einaudi’s work can be heard in Casey Affleck’s film I’m Still Here , Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar , and the trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan.

“It is a show that contains different parts of my work. There is a solo part in the middle of the concert, and the first part is more recent music from my last album Element s. The second part, I go more into the repertoire,” Einaudi says. “I will play some of the music that people have maybe discovered from the films. There is quite a variety of sounds and dynamics. It is a mix, a portrait of my work.”

Ludovico Einaudi Announces 2024 Australian Tour

Ludovico Einaudi is gracing Australian shores from 2-11 February 2024.

pixeltracker

Arts Projects Australia are thrilled to announce the return of legendary Italian composer and pianist, Ludovico Einaudi – gracing Australian shores from 2-11 February 2024.

Performing music from his highly acclaimed Underwater album (2022), alongside classics spanning his 40+ year career – Einaudi is set to captivate audiences with his hauntingly beautiful and evocative music with performances at Sydney Opera House Concert Hall (NSW), Sidney Myer Music Bowl (VIC), and Perth Concert Hall (WA) in association with Perth Festival.

The most streamed classical music artist of all time, Einaudi is one of the most successful musicians in the world.

The Italian maestro's euphoric piano ballads and profound instrumentations has also led him to become one of TikTok's most streamed artists, when last year, his 2013 catalogue track ‘Experience' returned to the global charts after clocking up more than 15 billion views and inspiring 7 million video creations on TikTok.

Following a series of sold-out performances across Europe and the UK, Einaudi is set to bring his Underwater Tour to Australia. Performing music from the critically acclaimed and chart-topping album – a collection of 12 exquisitely-composed piano tracks – notably Underwater marks Einaudi's first solo album release in two decades.

The successful release of Underwater follows an extraordinary career, spanning multi-million-selling albums; the release of film and television scores, including soundtracks to Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning films, The Intouchables, Nomadland and The Father; and performing a historic concert set on a floating iceberg in the Arctic Ocean for Greenpeace.

For these special live performances, Einaudi will enchant audiences across the country, with his genre-defying music, weaving neo-classical, pop, ambient and experimental tones – accompanied by Federico Mecozzi (violin and viola), Redi Hasa (cello) and Francesco Arcuri (electronics and percussion).

Speaking to why Australia is such a special place for him to perform, Einaudi says: “I love touring in Australia for a few reasons. First, the audience is so open and warm. Second, I have many childhood beautiful memories connected with Australia because my granddad lived there for half of his life, and my mom used to tell me wonderful tales and stories about its land and inhabitants that it has become part of my DNA.”

Ludovico Einaudi returns with his Underwater Australian Tour from 2-11 February 2024 – with more information at  artsprojects.com.au
