Itinerary Mathura - Vrindavan Trip (3 Days)

Photo of Unknown Geeks

Radhe Radhe!

Exploring towns with such deep roots in our Indian Hindu mythology has always been fascinating. According to legend, the holy Lord Krishna was born in Mathura and raised in Vrindavan by his other parents, which is why both places have their own unique offerings in terms of Shree Krishna Leela Gatha.

Mathura is known as the centre of Brij Boomi (Krishna's territory), whereas Vrindavan is known as Krishna's playground, which regained its fame when Chaitanya Mahaprabhu rediscovered in his search for divine love traces all of Krishna's transcendent pastimes.

If you ever get the chance to visit here, Bhakts says there are many things to see and do. Various worthwhile locations allowed you to observe both heritage and cultural features, with the essence of Radhe Radhe singing throughout.

During my visit to Brij Dham, I had the opportunity to actually feel the stories that I had been hearing since I was a child and to be a witness to those surreal places, as well as learn about notable places around Shri Krishan Leela or birth with other associates of his life,

if you are planning a 2-3 day trip and want to explore the best places and get the essence of the divine place's cultural and religious heritage. Here's a sample itinerary for your next vacation. Beginning in Delhi,

Planning a vacation ahead of time helps you avoid back-and-forth trips, which we experienced, and allows you to make better use of your time.

There are a variety of ways to get to Mathura at your leisure; in our case, we planned to rent a car. Because we knew we only had limited time to see so many locations, and the simplicity of commuting allows us to see more. It is possible that renting a car will be more expensive. But believe me when I say that spending a few additional funds is well worth it once you understand how simple it is to commute from one location to another.

Our advisor recommends starting your journey as early as possible in the morning because when the sun rises, there will be more traffic on the highways, resulting in extra time to get to your destination.

It's always a good idea to book a hotel room in the city. So that you may make the most of your stay in these sacred places by visiting historic temples, praying there, and admiring beautiful architecture while eating a variety of vegetarian delights.

We got up at 6 a.m. because we knew it would take us 3 to 3:30 hours (depending on traffic) to be at Shree Krishan Janmasthan, where we would begin our journey.

We've placed our car in a parking spot near Potra Kund and are ready to start spending.

Tip: Because phones and other electronic devices are not permitted inside, keep them in your car or in a locker provided by local shops.

It is one of India's most well-known Kunds, and because of its connection to Lord Krishna, it has a particular place in the hearts of his devotees. This Potra kund is actually a stepwell, known in India as Boali. The connection between this Kund and Lord Krishna is that Mata Devki and Vasudeva used to wash their children's clothes in this stepwell, and clothes back then were referred to as Potra.

Shri Krishna Janmasthan Temple, Mathura:

This is the site where Lord Krishna is said to have been born. This location includes caves and khakis portraying god life, as well as big temples for pooja and worshipping. Surrounded by a market and chanting that seemed to convey the story of Shree Krishan's birth times through each stone and carving.

There is a mosque, which you will undoubtedly notice. According to locals, during his reign, Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb constructed the Shahi-Eidgah Mosque, which is close to Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, which is thought to be over a Hindu temple.

Kans Quila (Old Fort or Purana Qila of Mathura)

We decided to explore Kans Quila after seeing this. Due to tight one-way highways, we had to keep our vehicle in the market. It is thought to be the fort of Kansa (Lord Krishna's maternal uncle), which is surrounded by a massive longwall and fenced near the Ganga ghat, with architectural influences by Hindu and Muslim influences.

In today's period, the quilt (shape) appears shabby as a result of inadequate upkeep, and it's difficult to understand how rulers ruined its beauty and architecture over time.

Shahi Jama Masjid:

We get an opportunity to look over Shahi Jama Masjid, which is adjacent to the market. When we asked locals about the area, they said: "it was built in 1661 by Abd-un-Nabi Khan." This structure's grandeur spellbinds one with its four minarets and mosaic plastering, as well as the magnificent sculptures." The front of the mosque is etched with 99 names of Allah in Persian script, according to residents.

We sat there for a time, enjoying the peace and quiet while learning about the significance of the location. It is always beneficial to be aware that there will be two components of different religions that operate together.

Birla Temple/Gita Mandir:

On the Vrindavan-Mathura route, on the outskirts of Mathura. It is a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims. The main draw of this temple is that it contains all 18 chapters of the Bhagavad Gita written on its pillars. - remarked Pandit ji

The temple also holds Lord Krishna's chariot and the Bhagavad Gita Stambh, which contains all of the Bhagavad Gita's carvings.

Photo of Itinerary Mathura - Vrindavan Trip (3 Days) by Unknown Geeks

Shri Bankey Bihari Temple.

It is the most well-known and well-visited Mathura temple devoted to Lord Krishna. It is said that if a devotee gazes long enough into the Lord's eyes out of devotion, Krishna's heart melts and he joins the devotee, leaving his throne behind. Because of this, it is believed that every two minutes, a purdah (curtain) is drawn in front of the idol between the worshippers to break the intensity of feeling that Krishna's image stirs in his devotees.

After that , We chose to have lunch nearby after spending some time visiting the gorgeous market and spending some time around the temple, which is full of sweets (pede) in particular, as well as other fascinating things to carry with you.

We had our lunch in the hotel while having some rest we have a plan to visit the next place which is Nidhivan Vidhivan . which would be the last place to explore since we need to walk around the place. And ended up with this for day one

Nidhivan Vrindavan :

It is said that Lord Krishna performs his Ras Leela every single night here, and that anyone who dares to look over the site in the evening or even attempts to do so has lost their sight, voice, or worse, mental soundness. With a walk-around gated lane, you can get a close look at Nidhivan's trees, It is a must-see destination that attracts visitors from all over the world.

One interesting discovery was that the Tulsi plants located in the premises are in pairs, according to pandit ji.

Nidhivan Vrindavan

Photo of Itinerary Mathura - Vrindavan Trip (3 Days) by Unknown Geeks

On the second day, we planned to go to Govardhan parikrama. It is said that Goverdhan hill, also known as Giriraj hill, is one of the most auspicious mountains in the world, and that all gopas and gopis circumnutated it to please Lord Krishan.

It's a 23 kilometer parikrama that took us 6 hours to finish due to the numerous sights we saw along the way, including

Govardhan Parikarma:

Along the parikrama, you might be surprised to see some devotees performing Dandavata Parikara (where they cover the entire parikrama by drawing marks on the ground while lying flat). I had the opportunity to ask them how long it would take them to get to the end, and he responded three weeks. He went on to say that this ritual is frequently conducted with milk, which is considered more sacred.

Sankarshan Kund:

The cow was drinking water from a pond when she was suddenly attacked by a tiger, according to legend. She did everything she could to keep the tiger away, but the animal was stubborn. Finally, she negotiated a deal with the tiger that she would return to be eaten after nursing her calf and bidding her master farewell, and the tiger agreed to let her go. She returned home and instructed her calf to drink milk till he was satisfied. His master Brahmin was touched by this and chose to offer himself as a sacrifice instead. All three of them eventually made their way back to the pond. it was at this moment that Lord Krishna himself appeared in front of them seeing Lord Krishna's tiger had a change of heart in this way all three of them were saved by the grace of Lord Krishna.

Punchari Ka Lautha Baba Temple:

Uddhav Kund, Govardhan

You’ll find mention of this Kund in the epics, as this is the place where Uddhav Ji sympathized with Dvaraka’s residents. This kund is situated to the west of Kusum Sarovar Govardhan on the east end of Parikrama Marg.

Shyam Kund & Radha Kund:

According to the ancient epics, Lord Krishna's maternal uncle Kans commanded the demon to kill him. However, that demon took the appearance of a bull, and Lord Krishna easily defeated it; however, the cow family is respected in India, so Radha and the villagers claimed that Lord Krishna had committed a crime. As a result, in order to overcome the sin, he bathed in the holy water. Following this, Radha dug a route with her Kangan (bracelet) to allow the holy water to flow to her Kund, which is now known as Radha Kund and is considered the holiest of all holy locations. Lord Krishna's devotees believe that these Kunds have healing powers.

With that, you can find a list of all the kunds we've looked into here .

Day 2 was lots of excitement and walking yet, despite backpacking 21+ kilometres, we didn't feel exhausted, perhaps due to the enthusiasm of pilgrims around us who kept chanting the names of Radhe Radhe throughout our journey.

Pro Tip: Don't forget to feed monkeys during your parikrama; it is believed that if you continue to help those who meet you on your parikrama, you will gain more benefits from your yatra. It's the kind of devotion you're fostering in others.

We began really early in the morning. We had planned to visit a couple well-known temples that had daytime closure times. Our guide informed us that during the day, all significant temples close between 12 and 3 p.m. So it's best to explore them first, and then we'll return to our original location.

Sri Krishna Balram Temple (ISKCON Vrindavan):

Built-in 1975, the Sri Krishna Balram Temple is located on the banks of the Yamuna River, where Balarama used to herd their cow. The Aarti and Bhagavad Geeta lessons given here every day enchant visitors to the heavenly shrine. Located in Vrindavan's Raman Reti neighborhood. It is a prominent tourist attraction for visitors to Mathura.

Shri Pagal Baba Temple:

It is the first of its type, a white marbled temple. Pagal Baba, whose real name is Sri Sheela Nand Ji Maharaj, created the temple, which is a seven-story building with each storey dedicated to a distinct avatar of Lord Krishna.

Prem Mandir:

It is one of Vrindavan's newest and most amazing temples, according to our guide, a resurrection of traditional Indian art and Nagara architecture emphasising Rajasthani and Gujrati style with finely carved doors with floral designs.

Pilgrims were treated to a musical fountain, a life-size model, and grand architecture all around, with the finest part being the nighttime lightening show after sunset. The entire temple is a visual pleasure for all visitors.

We have ended up our journey with prem mandir in the evening, we had a fantastic time when we were there. No one wants to return to those areas after seeing them all, yet everyone's life requires a balance of commitment and responsibility. Overall, I can say that traveling here and seeing the decor then and pilgrims will make you fall in love with the enchantments and surroundings. But, like with every good story, there must be a happy ending.

I was way young when I did the exactly tour with my parents, of course my parents too me to these places. And the itinerary looked pretty same. You just refreshed my memories. Somehow I do not have pictures to look at. Could relate to the pictures you posted here.

Thanks for sharing a detailed guide on Agra-Mathura-Vrindavan tour as many of tourists visit these places in North India. As these places are very popular but it is very difficult to plan what to see first and how to go from one city to another. But thankfully you have covered all these useful tips in your blog. I have been to Mathura and Vrindavan but not Agra and very soon planning for it.

I have been to Taj Mahal once and we were unlucky because the entire morning Taj Mahal was closed for some reason so all the visitor had to wait to the afternoon and it was crowded!

I wish we would have visit Mathura and Vrindavan as it looks as these places as a lot to offer! Thank you for a detailed guide of these places, very helpful!

I did this tour last year and had an amazing time. I was still very happy to read this article as it brought back a lot of amazing memories. Your pictures look amazing too! Thank you for sharing this lovely article.

I did not realise that Mathura and Vrindavan are so close to Agra, only 60 kms ahead! I visited those cities when I was a little child and don’t remember much from my trip except that my grandparents took me to several temples while we were there! Agra, however, was a more recent trip for me so I have to agree with Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri being the top 3 places to visit there.

I’ve always wanted to visit Agra because of the Taj Mahal! You’ve also given me enough inspiration to make it a worthwhile trek out of New Delhi to see. I think the fort would be a great historical aspect to understand Agra and the surrounding region and I love the temples that you included!

You will not believe how helpful this post is to us. I have a few friends coming in from US and wanted to cover Taj Mahal and a few places nearby and had asked me to draw up a plan for them. Now I can just ask them to see this post! Thanks for this 🙂

That’s awesome! I am sure they are going to have a great time 🙂

Its been a bit over a decade since I went on this trip. It was a super memorable one coz we took a day and half train from Chennai to Delhi! It was indeed super fun. Yeah, I did one of those coach tours from Delhi to Agra, Mathura & Vrindavan. We went to Fatehpur Sikri by ourselves later. Nostalgic…..

I have visit Mathura and Vrindavan these are amazing holy places in India. Agra is very nice too because of famous Taj Mahal and fatehpur sikri.

To be honest, never thought that the Agra area is that large. It needs two days, that is good to know.

Agra and Brindavan are my favortie places. I love the serenity and the beautiful buildings around this place. I think I’ll explore these places one more time.

Nice coverage of the place, Very informative blog and suggestion for travelers. I really like to this blog its very interesting and informative. Thanks for your amazing travel guide and your photos are mind-blowing.

Introduction

How Many Days Required to Visit Mathura and Vrindavan? Mathura and Vrindavan are two ancient and sacred cities nestled in the heart of Uttar Pradesh, India. With a history dating back thousands of years, these cities hold immense religious significance for followers of Hinduism. Mathura is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna, while Vrindavan is the place where he spent his childhood and performed many of his divine activities. For pilgrims and travelers alike, a visit to these spiritual havens can be a truly enlightening and transformative experience. However, to make the most of your journey, you may wonder, “How many days required to visit Mathura and Vrindavan ?” Let’s explore this question in detail.

Understanding the Depth of Spirituality

Before we delve into the ideal duration of your visit, it’s essential to comprehend the vastness of the spiritual experience that awaits you in Mathura and Vrindavan. These cities are not mere tourist destinations; they are living testimonies of devotion and faith. Temples , ghats , and shrines abound in every nook and corner, each with its unique legend and significance. The atmosphere is infused with devotion and an aura of sacredness, inviting you to immerse yourself fully in the spirituality of the place.

Exploring Mathura: The Birthplace of Lord Krishna

Mathura, often hailed as the “Krishna Janmabhoomi,” holds a prominent place in Hindu mythology. It is believed that Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born in a prison cell here over 5,000 years ago. The city’s streets are lined with vibrant markets, bustling with activity and offering a glimpse into the local culture.

Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple stands at the heart of Mathura, marking the exact spot of Krishna’s birth. The temple’s architecture is awe-inspiring, and it attracts thousands of devotees and tourists daily. The Dwarkadhish Temple and the Gita Mandir are among other essential places of worship in Mathura.

Visiting these iconic sites, listening to the captivating tales of Lord Krishna’s divine play, and witnessing the evening aarti at the ghats are experiences that can leave an indelible mark on your soul.

The Charms of Vrindavan: Lord Krishna’s Playground

A short drive from Mathura takes you to Vrindavan, a place known for its association with Lord Krishna’s enchanting childhood exploits. Vrindavan is where he danced with the gopis, played his divine flute, and performed the famous Raas Leela with his beloved Radha and other gopis.

Banke Bihari Temple , one of the most revered temples in Vrindavan, is a must-visit. The temple’s unique deity of Lord Krishna in the Tribhanga posture is a sight to behold. Prem Mandir and ISKCON Temple are also popular spots for spiritual seekers.

Apart from the temples, the Yamuna River flowing through Vrindavan adds to the city’s charm. The Kesi Ghat and the Katyayani Peeth are sacred places situated on the banks of the river, where pilgrims often perform rituals and take a dip in the holy waters.

Ideal Duration for Your Journey

Now that we have glimpsed into the spiritual wonders of Mathura and Vrindavan, let’s address the central question: “How many days are required to visit Mathura and Vrindavan?” To do justice to the richness of the experience and to explore the myriad sacred sites at a leisurely pace, three to four days are recommended.

Spending two full days in Mathura will allow you to visit the major temples, participate in morning and evening aartis, and take in the bustling city’s ambiance. In contrast, an additional day should be dedicated to Vrindavan, where you can revel in the stories of Lord Krishna’s playful days and absorb the serenity of the Yamuna ghats.

Day 1: Immerse in Mathura’s Spiritual Tapestry

On the first day of your journey, start early and head straight to the Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple to seek the blessings of Lord Krishna at the very place of his birth. Witnessing the morning aarti can be a spiritually uplifting experience. Afterward, explore other significant temples such as Dwarkadhish Temple and Gita Mandir .

Break for a delicious local meal and then visit the Vishram Ghat along the Yamuna River. This is where, according to legend, Lord Krishna took rest after defeating his evil uncle, Kansa. The peaceful atmosphere by the riverbank can be an ideal spot for contemplation.

In the evening, witness the grand Ganga Aarti at the ghats. The beautifully synchronized rituals, accompanied by the chanting of hymns, create an ethereal atmosphere.

Day 2: Delving Deeper into Mathura’s Heritage

On the second day, delve deeper into the religious and cultural heritage of Mathura. Visit Kusum Sarovar , a serene water tank with historical significance. The Govardhan Hill , located a short distance from Mathura, is believed to be lifted by Lord Krishna to protect the villagers from torrential rains. A visit to this sacred hill is spiritually enriching.

Take some time to explore the local markets in Mathura, where you can shop for souvenirs, traditional artifacts, and handicrafts. Interacting with the locals and learning about their customs can offer valuable insights into the region’s vibrant culture.

Day 3: Revel in the Spirituality of Vrindavan

As you proceed to Vrindavan on the third day, begin your spiritual sojourn with a visit to the Banke Bihari Temple during the early morning hours. The temple’s unique deity of Lord Krishna, which is unveiled for only a few minutes each day, is an extraordinary sight to witness.

After the temple visit, stroll through the narrow lanes of Vrindavan, known as “Brahmavartas,” each of which is believed to have witnessed the divine presence of Lord Krishna. These lanes are full of charm, and the atmosphere resonates with spirituality.

Head to Prem Mandir , a marvel of modern architecture that narrates the life of Lord Krishna through beautifully carved statues and enchanting light shows. Spending time in meditation here can be incredibly rejuvenating.

In the evening, join the devotees at the ISKCON Temple for the soul-stirring Gaura Arati , where the melodious chants and the rhythmic beats of drums create an ambiance of devotion.

Departure Day: Farewell with a Promise to Return

On the fourth day, it is time to bid farewell to the spiritual abode of Mathura and Vrindavan. Depart with a heart filled with gratitude and a promise to return to this sacred land in the future.

In conclusion, the answer to the question, “ How many days required to visit Mathura and Vrindavan? ” is three to four days. This duration allows you to immerse yourself in the profound spirituality and ancient cultural heritage that these cities offer. Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, and Vrindavan, his playground during childhood, are places that resonate with devotion and leave a lasting impression on the hearts of all who visit.

So, if you seek a transformative journey of the soul, a visit to Mathura and Vrindavan should undoubtedly be on your travel itinerary. The experiences of witnessing the divine aartis, exploring the sacred temples, and walking the same lanes where Lord Krishna once roamed can be truly enlightening and spiritually uplifting. Prepare to embark on a pilgrimage that transcends time and connects you with the eternal spiritual essence of Hinduism.

And this belief is continued every time in the Vrindavan. It was first constructed in the 16th century under the reign of Mughal emperor Akbar. Though the principal deity of this temple is goddess Radha but the idol here is of Radhe Krishna, the inseparable.

Later, Advaita Acharya founded it at the base of an old Banyan tree and entrusted the worship of Madana Mohan to his disciple, Purusottama Chaube.

During the Mughal invasion, the idol from this temple was taken to Jaipur by King Jai Singh and later shifted to Karauli by King Gopal Singh. Also, there is a park next to it pulling you closer to the natural beauty and an inhabitant of deer and ducks. In this place Holi is played with the sand, not the colours.

Finally, visit the Brahmand Ghat. The story   behind this is once Krishna ate the soil and when Yashoda came to know about it he forced him to open his mouth to let the soil out and witnessed the whole universe in there, aka Brahmand in Hindi. Hence, there is this Ghat with a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Govt’s attention now on mathura, vrindavan: yogi.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on Thursday, stated that after Ayodhya and Kashi, the government’s attention is now directed towards Mathura and Vrindavan. He expressed optimism for a positive court ruling on Mathura as well and emphasised that the pace of development in Mathura-Vrindavan will be further accelerated.

Addressing the ‘Vijay Sankalp Namankan Sabha’ at the Seth BN Poddar Inter College grounds, the chief minister also issued a warning to the Congress and the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), emphasising that the entire nation is prepared to reprimand those who disrespect ‘matra shakti’.

During this, he actively campaigned for the incumbent MP and Bharatiya Janata Party’s Lok Sabha candidate Hema Malini. In addition, Chief Minister Yogi highlighted the accomplishments achieved during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ten-year tenure.

“Hema ji is contesting from here for the third time, while other parties are struggling to find suitable candidates. They resort to borrowing candidates, and when they fail even in that, Congress leaders lose their composure. Their derogatory remarks against ‘matra shakti’ are a disgraceful insult to half the population,” he said.

He emphasised that the people of the INDIA bloc must recognise that Mathura is the sacred land of Radhe Rani and Yamuna Maiya. “Disrespecting half the population will invite nationwide backlash. This land reveres ‘matra shakti’, and any attempt to demean it will face severe consequences. While democracy upholds freedom of expression, it does not justify insulting ‘matra shakti’,” the chief minister warned.

The chief minister emphasised that while personal preferences may vary, targeting art, culture and caste is unacceptable. He warned that those involved in such actions are digging their own graves. “Mathura is renowned for its artistry. Lord Krishna incarnated here with 16 arts. What better place to celebrate art?” he remarked.

He further stated, “There is a renowned Indian cinema actress, who has devoted her life to showcasing India’s culture and civilisation globally through her talent. Her performances draw crowds from across the world and she is widely admired. If members of the Congress party have an issue with this, it raises doubts about their own standing, perhaps even in the eyes of God.”

Chief Minister Yogi questioned why the Congress, which held power for 60 years, failed to foster development in Kashi, Mathura and Ayodhya. He mentioned that upon the suggestion of Hema Malini, development initiatives in Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, Gokul and Baldev have been ensured through the Braj Teerth Development Council. He highlighted the rapid progress of development in various pilgrimage sites.

“At many places, we have to wait due to pending court cases. Nevertheless, we remain steadfast in our belief that victory will ultimately be ours. Just as we patiently endured for 500 years,” he said.

The chief minister questioned why the Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Congress did not facilitate the construction of the Shri Ram temple in Ayodhya. He accused these parties of resorting to violence against Ram devotees, recounting incidents where individuals were assaulted merely for uttering ‘Jai Shri Ram’, facing attacks with sticks and bullets.

The chief minister said that development projects were in the pipeline for Kashi and Ayodhya, with a renewed focus on the Braj Bhoomi region. He emphasised that initiatives such as the construction of 84-Kosi Parikrama, Govardhan Parikrama, Barsana Parikrama, and efforts to purify the river Yamuna and beautify local ponds will be driven by public sentiment and will proceed rapidly.

Chief Minister Yogi emphasised the strategic scheduling of elections in Mathura ahead of Ayodhya and Kashi, delivering a strong message nationwide. While development endeavours are underway in Ayodhya and Kashi, he underscored the necessity for concerted efforts towards the progress of Mathura and Vrindavan, urging support for Hema Malini’s re-election with a significant majority for the third time. He also announced plans for a campaign akin to Namami Gange, focusing on the purification of the river Yamuna.

He questioned whether the Congress, the SP and the BSP could have accomplished these tasks. “Could they have ensured a secure environment for both businessmen and daughters? Their stance on the welfare of entrepreneurs and daughters is evident from their speeches,” he remarked.

Continuing, he asserted, “In such circumstances, there is no reason to expect anything from these parties or waste vote on them. May our present remain safe and prosperous, leading to a future marked by unprecedented progress and the realisation of a developed India. To achieve this, we must ensure Hema Malini’s victory by surpassing the combined votes she received in the last two elections.”

The chief minister highlighted that for the first time, India has witnessed a government that, in line with the nation’s ethos, safeguarded its dignity and fostered an environment of security and prosperity.

This government has endeavoured to elevate India’s stature globally, enhancing national pride and self-respect. Significant strides have been made in developing world-class infrastructure and ensuring that welfare schemes directly benefit the underprivileged, he added.
