riverboat cruise fort wayne

Relax and enjoy a guided cruise on the Fort Wayne Rivers. Sweet Breeze, Fort Wayne’s authentic canal boat replica is offering 45 and 90 minute tour lengths. This fully accessible tour will be a fun experience for everyone! Each tour provides an opportunity to learn something new about Fort Wayne through its riverfront. For information on private tours please email [email protected] .

Sweet Breeze was built by Scarano Boat Builders out of Albany, NY. It is flat-bottomed, aluminum hulled boat which is 54’ long, has a draft of 2.75’ and an air draft of 8.5’. The new build was modeled after 1840s canal boat, but in order to better fit our waterways, was scaled back to ¾ the size of the historic canal boats. It is powered by a single 55 HP Marine Diesel Volvo Penta engine. It was delivered by a lowboy trailer in January 2017, craned into the Maumee River on May 20th and christened on June 5th. The Sweet Breeze is wheelchair accessible.

Fort Wayne’s history is tied to canal boats and to the Wabash and Erie Canal. The Canal was a shipping canal that linked the Great Lakes to the Ohio River via an artificial waterway. The canal provided traders with access from the Great Lakes all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Over 478 miles long, it was the longest canal ever built in North America.

The canal began operation in the summer of 1843, yet only operated for a decade before it became apparent that it was not economically viable. Even when the canal boats were operated at extremely slow speeds, the banks rapidly eroded, and the canal had to be constantly dredged to be operable. The last canal boat on the Wabash Canal made its last docking in 1874 in Huntington, Indiana. Sweet Breeze recreates the mystery and excitement of what was to be a new era of commerce and travel in the Midwest.

Fort Wayne was the highest point on the canal (i.e. the summit), so Fort Wayne earned the name “Summit City”. Canal boats carried people and goods on our rivers and canals from 1843-1874 which was much faster than burdensome wagons. Drafts animals, usually mules, pulled long, narrow canal boats by a rope on a path next to the canal, called a towpath.

Sweet Breeze Canal Boat Ride

Over the holiday weekend, we booked the 90 minute Canal Boat ride for 4 but there were 12 other family members in our group. It was a beautiful day with cool temperatures. We had a wonderful experience. Our docent Pat Jones did an excellent job of describing the rivers and their function throughout the growth of our city. He also told us some fascinating historical facts, specifically relating how our area of the country was instrumental to the Indians as well as the growth of our nation. It made me long for more. There were people of all ages on the tour and everyone seemed rapt with attention. Some of the children were walking about the boat but Pat did not let that distract him. He spoke clearly and made certain everyone could hear him. Dan Jones was an excellent Captain. It was a smooth, safe ride. I understand they both grew up on the rivers and I think their knowledge made the trip safe, fun and interesting. I really liked that we were free to roam about the boat. I don't think I could have sit still for 90 minutes. It was also nice for picture taking. I suggest they may want to have some books available for sale at the end of the tour for those who are interested to learn more Fort Wayne history. Also, I have taken riverboat rides all over the country and in Europe. It has been my experience that at the end of the tour, the docent states that if anyone like the tour and history lesson, they should feel free to offer a tip. Then points out the location where to put the money. No pressure, just suggesting it. Pat and Dan really did deserve a tip as they went over and above my expectations.

We booked seating on the new canal river cruise that takes riders on the St Mary, Maumee, and St Joseph rivers for a 90 minute tour The boat is a 3/4 scale replica of a canal boat. Tour was very informative, especially detailing how the city has done flood control various ways, and informative on the types of vegitation along the banks. Would have like a little more historical information - how they were used by Indians, French, etc for commerce, although we were told that in days past, one could travel from the river all the way to New Orleans. They also offer a 45 minute ride. You'll have to book online or buy tickets at their store. The canalboat leaves Headwaters Park West. Best place to park is on Clar Ave off Harrison. There is no street sign but my Garmin found it.

This business rents bikes, kayaks, and other boats for the North Central Indiana area. The bike paths and the three rivers of Fort Wayne are next to the building. The rental price for my kayak was reasonable for the half day. While they will deliver boats to a remote, location, they charge per the mile. It was cheaper for me to rent a U-Haul truck than to pay for drop off/pick up of the kayak. What makes this business stand out is the service of their staff. Mica helped me load the kayak in the truck and provided loading tips for me (on return trip). Cara was extremely helpful on me identifying my needs and helping me match the kayak and rental time for my schedule. If you forgot something, do not worry, Fort Wayne Outfitters provides water safety bags, eye glass retainers, and other equipment you need (but forget) for a biking or boating adventure. Fort Wayne Outfitters is an EXCELLENT service that I will use on my next trip to North East Indiana.

Fort Wayne Outfitters is a great place to do business with! They have friendly employees, awesome equipment, and just make everything so easy. I have used them multiple times to canoe with, and I think it's great we have a place like this in Fort Wayne.

This is a must do activity while in Fort Wayne! My wife and I rented a double kayak for 2 hours for only $20 (great deal!) and paddled all the way up to Stevie's Island past State St. and made it back under 2 hours! The staff are very friendly, the store they have is really nice, and it's all around a great activity!

We rented kayaks over the weekend to check out the Fort Wayne rivers. The equipment was in great shape and check in was easy. We decided to do the longest trip they offer which starts at Shoaff Park. Unfortunately, they only offer the shuttle service on Saturdays so we had to take two vehicles and drive the kayaks to the starting point. Overall, it was a fun experience and a great work out. Prices were competitive with other places we have rented. Would recommend them if you want to check out what the rivers have to offer.

Dinner Boat Rides

  • March 10, 2016

Once the only way to travel before roads, and when thick forests carpeted our state, now Indiana’s waterways—winding rivers, inland lakes and even a long stretch of Lake Michigan coast—still beckon us to journey in ways of yore. So climb aboard—the water’s great—whether it’s a wine cruise on Patoka Lake, navigating past the grounds of an old hotel where Al Capone stayed on the Dixie, Indiana’s oldest sternwheeler paddleboat, or a voyage along the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore with Captain Ed’s Big Deck Charters.

In Fort Wayne, Captain Black’s Pontoon Tours depart from Fort Wayne Outfitters and Bike Depot for a two-hour “guided history” tour traveling on the St.Mary’s and St. Joseph rivers in downtown Fort Wayne. The standard tour is $250 for a group of 12 passengers maximum and the Deluxe costs $350 for the group and includes food and drinks which must be ordered 48 hours in advance.

The Deck at the Gas House (this longtime favorite restaurant in downtown Fort Wayne earned its name because its located at the site of a 19th century gas plant) offers 20-minute rides along the St. Mary’s River Thursday through Saturday beginning around 6 p.m. You can also call to make a reservation.

SS Lillypad

During the season in Koskiusko County, the Wawasee Tour Boat Co. offers daily tours on the Oakwood Tour Boat, which holds 40 people, of the 27-acre Lake Wawasee, Indiana’s largest natural lake, named for Miami Chief Wawasee. For those staying at the Oakwood Resort in Syracuse, where the boat is docked, the tour is free; otherwise the one-hour trip costs just $10 per person. The boat is also available for private charters.

Combine brunch, lunch or dinner with a voyage on the S.S. Lillypad II, a two-story, houseboat. At 70 feet long, it’s the largest boat on Lake Wawasee and accommodates groups of up to 110 people. The boat can be booked for private parties, and offers several public cruises each month for varying lengths— two, three or four hours. The vessel’s big-screen TV also accommodates parties for viewing Notre Dame football in late summer and early fall. Each year the S.S. Lillypad II features themed parties such as Gilligan’s Island or Margaritaville.

St. Joseph River in Ft. Wayne

For decades, The Dixie, the state’s oldest sternwheeler paddleboat, has traversed the silvery blue waters of Webster Lake just blocks from the downtown of North Webster in Northern Indiana. On the National Registry of Historic Places, The Dixie offers 90-minute cruises starting Memorial Day weekend. “Before there were good roads and cars, people would stand on the pier and wave at the boat so they could get a ride,” says former Dixie owner Dan Thystrup. He also noted the original boat, the City of Webster, was built in 1908 and functioned as a floating blacksmith, lumber, post office and grocery ferry, visiting the piers of houses that lined the shore of this 500-acre lake in North Webster, a small old-fashioned lake town. Replaced in 1928, this Dixie has been updated over the years, offering regularly scheduled cruises as well as being available for private charters.

The 135-foot-long Madam Carroll, the largest licensed United States Coast Guard approved vessel in Indiana, was built in August of 1976 and has run continuously for the last four decades. Available for both public and private cruises on the 1,500-acre Lake Freeman in Monticello, Madame Carroll’s public cruises sail each Saturday night and some Friday nights from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Cruise options include sightseeing, dinner or special events and last between two to three hours.

Thick woodlands surround Indiana’s second largest manmade lake, 8,800-acre Patoka Lake, making bald eagle and other wildlife sightings (osprey, deer, wild turkeys) a common occurrence. So climb aboard one of the two tour boats which dock at Patoka Lake Marina in Birdseye. Tour options include sunset wine and beer cruises, Wednesday nights and select Sunday afternoon rides.
