Grand Circle Island Tour Details

A circle tour is a great way to see the best of an island in one go. We recommend doing it at the beginning of your trip so you can get a feel for the island and its history, then pick out where you want to spend more time and go back during your trip.

This full day tour starts with pickup at major hotels and resorts all along the Kona coast and returns you back in time for a late dinner on your own.

From desert to rainforest, pasture to dry forest, discover diverse landscapes and 8 out of 13 climate zones in the world as you traverse the island, walk through rainforests to soaring waterfalls, and stroll black sand beaches as you scan the horizon for green sea turtles.

Starting around 7AM your tour guide will pick you up and head south towards the beautiful coffee growing areas of South Kona for a continental breakfast. You’ll get to tour the Kona Coffee Farm, sampling as you go. Along the way you will make brief stops to enjoy the beautiful views. After breakfast you continue to Punalu’u Black Sand Beach and a beautiful little cafe for a late morning treat.

Next you’ll venture into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see steam vents, past lava flows, the Halema’uma’u and Kilauea Iki crater lookouts, and take a short hike through the 600-foot-long Thurston Lava Tube formed hundreds of years ago.

Continue the tour into historic Hilo with its cute downtown area parks and shops. The afternoon will bring you to some magnificent waterfalls. First up is Akaka Falls, which drops a staggering 442 feet, followed by the famed Rainbow Falls. Take some time to enjoy this wonderful location.

You’ll stop at various overlooks and your guide will tell stories of the people, the lands and events that have happened over the years so you can really appreciate what you experience throughout the day. No area is more important than the incredible Waipio Valley, the last major stop on this Grand Circle Island tour, giving you an incredible sunset to end your day.

You will complete your 10-12 hour day back at your hotel, tired but excited about the incredible differences in landscape and weather you experienced throughout the day.

The Big Island of Hawaii really lives up to its' name…it IS BIG! It can be daunting trying to explore this island on your own. The Grand Circle Island Tour gives you the ability to take in all that the Big Island has to offer without having to worry about driving, and more importantly where all the good stops are! Let your guide keep their eyes on the road and chauffeur you to the scenic points while you enjoy the view! Not only is the Big Island huge, it is extremely diverse both in landscape and in climate zones. In a matter of hours you will go from lush, tropical rain forest to grassy ranch land, to volcanic craters and recent lava flows. Throw in the amazing ocean views and you get the complete spectrum of Hawaiian beauty. Your guide is certified and will relay stories and history throughout the day for each of the areas you visit. The guides are also a great resource for learning about the flora and fauna, most of which is native to the island.

Since the Big Island is so big, this tour takes an entire day. You need the time not only to cover the distance, but to be able to stop and really take in each of the places you visit. You will want to dress comfortably for a day of driving, getting in and out of the vehicle, and taking short hikes throughout the day. Since you will be visiting different climate zones across the island, you will want to be prepared with layers of clothing that you can add on for warmth as needed. A rain jacket is very handy when you make stops both in the rain forest, as well as Volcanoes National Park since light showers are common. Make sure you wear shoes that are comfortable to walk in, and that also get good traction. There is quite a bit of walking on this tour, some on uneven and at times slippery terrain. All ages are welcome on this tour, but make sure that if you have younger children in your party that they are comfortable being out for an entire day and don't mind long car trips.

Big Island Grand Circle Island Tour

The Big Island Grand Circle Island Tour offers an exciting way to discover Hawaii's largest island in just one day, through its diverse ecosystems and natural wonders. This full-day nature tour takes visitors through different climate zones on the Big Island; deserts to rainforests; pastures to dry forests. Along the way you will visit some of its most spectacular waterfalls such as Akaka & Rainbow Falls as well as scenic valleys such as Waipio Valley.

One of the highlights of this tour is exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park's active craters, steam vents, and lava tubes for an immersive understanding of how this island was formed. There will also be frequent stops for photography to capture Hawaii's lush scenery in photos.

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, where visitors can spot green sea turtles while strolling along its black sand, is another highlight of this tour, making the Big Island Grand Circle Island Tour an excellent option for those with limited time who wish to experience all that the island has to offer in just one day.

I felt like I got to see all the best spots of Big Island on this 1 day tour!

Took this tour 6 years ago and had the most amazing experience. So I had to do it again. This tour offers the best of Big Island because you get to see Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls. We saw lots of turtles at black sand ... beach and an actual rainbow at Rainbow Falls! Our guide Brent was very informative and helpful.

Big Island Grand Circle Island Tour

This full-day nature tour offers an in-depth look at Hawaii’s youngest and largest island. From desert to rainforest, pasture to dry forest, discover diverse landscapes and 8 out of 13 climate zones in the world as you traverse the island, walk through rainforests to soaring waterfalls, and stroll black-sand beaches as you scan the horizon for green sea turtles.

You will first stop at a Kona Coffee Farm in the morning. Walk through the orchards with your guide learning about the harvesting and milling process while sampling a warm cup of Kona-grown coffee. On the leisure drive, you’ll see views of South Point, the southernmost point of the United States, and Kealakekua Bay before stopping at Punalu’u Bakery for some famous Hawaiian malasadas.

From there, you will have time to relax and take it all in at Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, a great place to spot marine life from the black-sand shore. Your adventure continues with exploring the wonders of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, including steam vents, past lava flow sites, the Halema’uma’u and Kilauea Iki crater lookouts, and take a short hike through the 600-foot-long Thurston Lava Tube formed hundreds of years ago.

The afternoon is filled with visits to some of the most majestic waterfalls on the Big Island. First, Akaka Falls. This towering 442-foot (135-meter) waterfall plummets into a lush ravine at the center of a state park. You’ll enjoy a short walk through the vegetation for an up-close view and plenty of photo opportunities. The next stop is a waterfall that’s small by comparison, but not by beauty: Rainbow Falls, a beautiful 80-foot (24-meter) waterfall with a giant banyan tree beside it. Continuing on the drive along the Hamakua Coast, more postcard-worthy views will pass by your window, ushering you to the next destination, the sunset views will stop you in your tracks at the Waipio Valley lookout, where a dramatic backdrop of verdant cliffs drops into the sparkling blue ocean.

Full Tour Details:

12 hour tour time.

Start Time: 9:00 AM

  • South Kona Coffee Farm: After we pick you up from your place of lodging, absorb the breathtaking views of lush vegetation and the stunning coastline as you begin your Big Island circle tour traveling south along the Kona coast. Kona coffee farms exist only in the Kona Coffee Belt on the Big Island, and unique environmental factors give 100 percent Kona coffee a rich flavor. Your guide will describe the cultural history of the area as well as the local flora and fauna. Arrive at an authentic Kona coffee farm where you’ll tour the farm and sample flavorful Kona coffee.
  • Punalu‘u Bakery : Visit the southernmost bakery in the United States. It’s world renowned for its sweet breads, malasadas (Portuguese fried dough aka “donut”), and other delicious treats. Here, you can enjoy a complimentary coffee or tea. Then, choose a malasada before heading on to explore the island’s most beautiful black sand beach.
  • Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach : See one of the prettiest black sand beaches in all of the Hawaiian Islands. The jet-black volcanic glass sand here was formed from the rapid cooling of basaltic lava hitting the ocean water then shattering into tiny fragments. Feel the black sand under your toes and hear the wind as it whistles through the palms and across the water. Your guide will keep a look out for green sea turtles and endangered hawksbill sea turtles, which are frequent visitors to the Big Island Hawaii black sand beaches.
  • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve, this iconic park encompasses the summit of two of the world’s most active volcanoes and extends from sea level up to the summit of Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. Here, you’ll find critically endangered wildlife as well as some of the most unique geological, biological, and cultural landscapes on Earth. Your tour will explore the main attractions in the park including: the Thurston Lava Tube, Chain of Craters Road, and a nature walk along the Halema‘uma‘u Crater for unique views of the current eruption and the natural steam vents in the area. You’ll enjoy a picnic lunch in the beauty of the park before embarking on your next leg of this incredible full circle tour of Hawaii’s Big Island.
  • Hilo Waterfalls: From the park, venture down to Hilo where you’ll visit the picturesque Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls State Park. Rainbow Falls cascades 80 feet over a lava cave—when conditions are right, admirers can see a rainbow appear in the waterfall’s mist. Akaka Falls plunges 442 feet into a pool, and many people consider this majestic waterfall their favorite on the Big Island.
  • Both waterfalls are a sight to behold. You’ll develop a deep admiration for the charms of Hawaiian landscapes in the Hilo waterfalls tour. Beautiful falls combined with lush vegetation make these stops photo worthy and truly breathtaking.
  • Hamakua Coast : Travel this 50-mile stretch of breathtaking coastline with its hidden waterfalls, tropical rainforest, and lush green valleys. Described as one of the most beautiful locations in the state, it’s well worth the scenic drive.
  • Waipio Valley Lookout: Arrive at Waipio Valley in the late afternoon. Enjoy the incredible views as your guide explains the rich history of the area. As you look over the breathtaking valley, ponder the history of this site and all that you’ve enjoyed so far on your journey. The grand circle tour of Big Island Hawaii is an adventure that delivers an unparalleled experience.
  • Waimea : Enjoy the sunset views of Waimea as you travel through Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) country and take in this historic area with its rolling, green pastures home to cattle, cowboys and one of the largest cattle ranches in the United States: Parker Ranch. End your Big Island circle tour at a local and authentic dinner in Waimea where surf and turf is a definite menu staple. Return to your lodging full, happy, and filled with memories that will last a lifetime.

Big Island Grand Circle Tour

Did the Big Island Grand Circle Tour with the entire family my first day there. I like that the van was small, with only about 12 people. Joseph, our guide, was great, very knowledgeable, and a super sweet guy. He had that van stocked with cookies, granola bars, pineapple, juice, and bottled water. If you only have a few days on the island, do this tour. Even though we all agreed the Volcano Park stops were our favorite, it was worth seeing everything else. Whenever I asked locals what I should see they all mentioned something I'd seen on this Circle Tour. Expect it to be 12 hours.

This is a long tour. jonathan our driver was great. He knew a lot of history of the island and was very informative on every stop. He is the only reason I give it 3 stars. The trip is too long and you spend a lot of time in the van. The stops are ok, you see 2 waterfalls, a volcano stop and few scenic views. You could do it all in a rental car with a map and go at your own ace. 11 hours in a van is a long time - do not recommend kids as they will get bored or sleep

Aloha Marc, Thank you for the review about our Circle Island Tour. We always like feedback to let us know about guest experiences. We understand that some of our tours do take a long time to go around this Island. Circle Island Tour goes around the entire circumference of the "Big Island" with over 266 miles of coastline. We stop at 9 different attractions on this tour, including multiple stops within Volcanoes National Park. Most of driving is through scenic landscapes and lush rain forest. While it may be more beneficial to take a rental car around the island, you might miss out on all the interesting facts and cultural information shared by our certified guides. We do offer a variety of other tours that are shorter and offer less driving and more hiking. We strive for comfort and convenience for our guests along with taking the strain away from driving yourself around the island for 11+ hours. It’s great to hear that you enjoyed Jonathan as a guide and we look forward to having you back here in Hawaii again soon. Mahalo!

Just like to say thanks to Marcus and Richard for a great day showing us around the island. Marcus had so much knowledge about the island he was able to talk and keep us entertained all day. A genuine tour that avoids the the tourist traps, Marcus went the extra mile to keep us supplied with drinks and pineapple. The trip included a "packed lunch" that was tasty and filling. Nothing was too much for a great team. Thanks Marcus and Richard for a memorable day. PS the only thing Marcus forgot to tell us why he believes in ghosts!!

The tour was great ! Joe, our tour guide, is outstanding ! he picked us up on time, shared this knowledge and the facts about Big Island! he made a special stop at the entrance of mauna kea at night as the meteor shower was happening, it was hard to see it but the view of stars was amazing! Now, for the booking of the tour, the wasabi agent was very polite when booking, but told us the wrong pick up time 8:50am, so my family waited for 2 hours for Joe( he was on time! 10:50am sharp!) , also, the wasabi office forgot to pack the vegetarian meal that I requested. Joe made us forget about the misfortune event because the tour was great. My family had a great time besides the 2 hour waiting.

had a great day with Dan as our driver/guide for the twilight volcano tour..picked up right on time at our condo and gave lots of information. its a long day but we saw alot! Lunch was very good (bento box) at the beach but dinner option really needs to be improved or make it a pay your own dinner. The choices at the Kilauea Military camp were pretty sad (hamburger, chicken fingers or baked potato) they had steak and other offerings but that wasnt included in our tour package price...better to make it pay on your own then those choices....overall a great tour and great tour guide!

Richard was an excellent tour guide. It takes a special person to keep a full van of people entertained from 8am to 7pm. Great photo opportunities and a chance to stretch our legs at many of the sites. The weather cooperated for a majority of the trip and when it did rain Richard made sure we had a place to eat that was protected from the rain. The Bento lunch was great and seemed to be a hit with the group. Bring a few personal snacks if you are the type that is often hungry because the time frame between lunch and end of tour can take you well into the 7pm range. Richard had some granola bars which helped a lot mid afternoon. All in all well worth the money and I would recommend it to anyone visiting the island for the first time. The tour gives you an opportunity to pick a few places you really liked and possibly drive back on your own for a longer adventure.

TOUR PHOTOS

Waimea Bay Oahu

I broke my ankle while on vacation and rented a mobility scooter the rest of the trip. This company is ADA compliant on their Grand Circle Island Tour of Oahu. The driver was great! He told us about the history of where we were going and kept us entertained the entire trip. He also never acted annoyed that he had to use the bus lift to lift me down at each stop which was nice. I do not believe the normal tour is on a huge bus unless you need the ADA complaint. I've been to Oahu 4 times in the past and never really did a Circle Island Tour. This was one of my favorite days I had (despite it raining the entire trip). I enjoyed all the stops!

Recently did two different tours with this company during my vacation with my husband in Oahu. The Grand Circle Island Tour with Cousin Koko was the best. Not only was he professional and fun-spirited, he was patient and very informative. Learned so much about the different places we visited on the tour. Treated everyone on the motorcoach like ohana! The Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona Memorial Tour with Cousin Wes was great as well. Our tour through downtown Honolulu was great; definitely appreciated the history lesson! It’s imperative that while on vacation, one should learn about the history and culture about the place you’re visiting! Thank you Roberts Hawaii for making our tours memorable!

The guide we had was excellent. He had a keen knowledge and deep understanding of the history and culture of Oahu and all the places we visited. And he brought us to a great local spot for lunch.

What you need to know about the 61st annual Merrie Monarch Festival

Get ready, world. The Merrie Monarch Festival returns to Hilo on the Big Island this week in celebration of everything hula and Hawaiian.

The 61st annual festival runs from Easter Sunday, March 31, through April 6 this year. Hula will be in the spotlight not just during the competition portion of the festival but also during the Hōʻike and at other venues around town throughout the week.

Here’s everything you need to know — and more — about this year’s festival.

Who are this year’s judges?

The judges are: Maelia Carter, Ed Collier, Ainsley Halemanu, Leimomi Ho, Nālani Kanakaʻole, Nani Lim Yap and Kealiʻi Reichel.

What is hula kahiko?

This is the traditional form of hula. It is accompanied by oli, or chant, and does not use modern instruments such as the ‘ukulele or guitar. Instead, traditional percussion instruments such as rhythm sticks, gourds carved into drums and rattles and bamboo sticks are used. According to The House of Kamakahelei, kahiko was generally performed before 1894.

What is hula ‘auana?

This style of hula is more modern and less formal than hula kahiko. “‘Auana” means to wander or drift, and this style has drifted away from the traditional hula kahiko. It is more interactive with the audience, taking influence from Western culture, and typically accompanied by song and a variety of instruments such as the guitar, steel guitar, bass and ‘ukulele. Hula ‘auana is more commonly used in movies and other Western media than its traditional counterpart.

Where can you get official Merrie Monarch wear?

grand circle tour big island hawaii

Official Merrie Monarch wear will be available for purchase during the Merrie Monarch Hawaiian Arts and Crafts Fair. You can also find official merchandise at Prince Kuhio Plaza’s Merrie Monarch Craft Fair and during the festival’s opening Hoʻolauleʻa.

Merchandise can be purchased on the official festival website  as well.

Official apparel is also available at the festival office at 865 Pi‘ilani St. in Hilo during regular business hours from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

What are the “instruments of hula”?

grand circle tour big island hawaii

There are several musical instruments commonly seen and used on the Merrie Monarch stage, including:

  • Pahu, a traditional tall and narrow Hawaiian drum carved from wood that is used to provide rhythm.
  • Ipu, a percussion instrument made from a single gourd or two large gourds of unequal sizes joined together, called an ipu heke, which is hit with a hand or tapped on the ground to create a beat.
  • ‘Uli ‘uli, which are gourds filled with pebbles, shells or seeds that rattle and are adorned with feathers.
  • ‘Ili ‘ili, which are smooth stones that can be struck together like castanets for a more staccato rhythm.
  • Pu‘ili are dried strips of bamboo that make a distinctive rattling sound when hit. They are used in pairs, with dancers tapping them against each other.

Why are the movements in hula so important?

grand circle tour big island hawaii

No matter the style, hula shares the stories that connect people, including the dancers, to the foundation of Hawaiian knowledge and culture. It is a vehicle for historical and social commentary and passing down stories and information.

“Every movement, expression and gesture in the hula has a specific meaning, from representing plants, animals and the elements to listening, searching, sailing and so much more,” according to Honolulu tour company Go Tours Hawai‘i, which adds that hand movements are of particular significance.

Hand movements are used to represent the words in a song or chant. They can represent an emotion like yearning or signify nature, such as a tree swaying in the wind or an ocean wave.

What are common hula adornments?

  • Pāʻū is a dance skirt worn by both men and women hula dancers. Made of kapa, or bark cloth, and elaborately decorated with stamped or painted patterns in ancient times, nowadays most dancers make them from woven cloth and dye, paint or silkscreen patterns onto them. They can be made with ti leaves; ‘ilihau, the processed bark of the hau tree; lauhala, the dried leaves of the hala tree; and even cellophane.
  • Malo is a men’s loincloth. While malo have become popular again, for modern hula, men also wear trousers, sometimes with a ti leaf, lauhala or ‘ilihau skirt over them. They can choose to wear shirts, but it is not obligatory.
  • Lei, the familiar garland of flowers, leaves, shells, ivory or feathers, are worn by men and woman around the neck or head and sometimes a hat.
  • Kupe‘e are similar to lei but instead decorate wrists or ankles, drawing attention to the delicate movements of hands and feet.

Who was King Kalākaua and why is the Merrie Monarch Festival dedicated to his memory?

grand circle tour big island hawaii

King David La‘amea Kalākaua, known as the “Merrie Monarch” for his flamboyant and fun-loving ways, was born Nov. 16, 1836, and died Jan. 20, 1891. The last king of the Kingdom of Hawai’i, he was elected to the post in 1874 and served until his death. Kalākaua’s sister, Lili‘uokalani, ascended to the throne, becoming the first woman to ever occupy it and the last Hawaiian sovereign to govern the islands.

Kalākaua did not support Christian missionary teachings that for decades had suppressed Hawaiian beliefs and traditions. Instead, he sought a renewal of all things Hawaiian, such as arts, medicine and hula. He and his queen, Kapi‘olani, lived by the motto, “Ho‘oūlu Lāhui,” or “Increase the Nation.”

Ancient Hawaiians had no written language. They used traditions such as chant and hula to record genealogy, mythology, history and religion, among others. Kalākaua not only relied on these traditional forms of documentation, he supported their practice and the expression of Hawaiian knowledge, ensuring future generations would inherit a robust Hawaiian heritage.

Kalākaua famously said: “Hula is the language of the heart and therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people.”

The Merrie Monarch Festival maintains the teachings of kūpuna, or elders, and strives to perpetuate the history and culture of Hawaiian people in a manner that respects those teachings. The festival continues Kalākaua’s work, making sure the unique traditions of Hawaiian people flourish.

Who was Edith Kanaka‘ole?

grand circle tour big island hawaii

Born Oct. 30, 1913, in Honomū on the windward side of the Big Island, Aunty Edith was a Hawaiian cultural icon, kumu hula, composer and chanter. A key influence in the Hawaiian renaissance of the 1970s, she dedicated her life to educating others about Hawaiian language and culture. She learned hula from her mother, who was instructed by acclaimed dancer Akoni Mika.

Kanakaʻole believed oli formed the basis of Hawaiian values and history. She started composing oli in 1946 and choreographed hula to go with many of her chants. In the 1950s, she toured the mainland United States, western Canada and much of Asia with a hula group named after her daughter Nalani. She also founded her own hālau, Hālau O Kekuhi.

She helped develop the first Hawaiian language program for public school students at Keaukaha School in Hilo, and In the 1970s she created college courses and seminars about subjects including ethnobotany, Polynesian history, genealogy and Hawaiian chant and mythology.

Kanaka‘ole died Oct. 3, 1979, but her teachings, beliefs and practices are maintained by the Edith Kanakaʻole Foundation, a nonprofit established in 1990. The Merrie Monarch Festival’s stage is inside a facility that shares her name, the Edith Kanaka‘ole Multi-Purpose Stadium in Hilo, and she also is featured on a new U.S. quarter that recently went into circulation, the seventh coin in the American Women Quarters program.

What are some Hawaiian words you might hear during the Merrie Monarch Festival?

  • Haumāna: Student.
  • Kāholo: Nimble, swift, quick; to move fast, progress rapidly. It also is a common hula step in modern dances.
  • Kāne: Male, man.
