The Annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is one of the iconic events in the Bayou City.

It is also one of the largest and most popular rodeos in the United States.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is held annually in Houston, Texas, and attracts over two million visitors each year.

The event includes a rodeo, concert series, livestock show, carnival, barbecue cook-off, trail ride, mutton bustin’, and more.

History of the Houston Rodeo

Here’s a brief history of the origins of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo began as a small gathering of ranchers and farmers in 1932.

The event was created to showcase the area’s livestock industry and to provide a venue for competition among local ranchers.

The first Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was held at the Sam Houston Coliseum with just over 3,000 attendees and 700 animals. 

Over the years, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has grown significantly in size and scope.

Today, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is one of the largest rodeos in the United States.

Houston Rodeo Dates 2023

The Rodeo usually begins last week of February / first week of March.

The pre Rodeo events take place the week before opening day.

The event lasts for three weeks from the opening day.

The 2023 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will be held from Tuesday, Feb 28 – Sunday, March 19, 2023.

Where is the Houston Rodeo held?

The Rodeo takes place in downtown Houston at the NRG Park every year.

NRG Park has multiple venues: concerts and rodeos are held inside the covered NRG Stadium, which can accommodate up to 71,500 spectators.

Other events and exhibitions take place in the NRG Arena and NRG Center.

The carnival rides and food courts are located in the outdoor areas of the NRG Park.

Houston Rodeo Time and Hours

NRG Park, Carnival, and NRG Center events are all day events.

Houston Rodeo Prices

Understanding the Houston Rodeo tickets is a bit difficult for first timers.

Grounds Ticket

The grounds ticket gives you access to NRG Center, NRG Park where the Carnival is held, and NRG Arena.

You can also visit the Horse Show on a Rodeo Grounds Ticket.

Grounds Season Pass

The grounds season pass is a better deal than buying individual tickets.

It gives you access to all the Texas-sized attractions at NRG Park (except Rodeo and Concerts).

It also gives entry to the BBQ Cookoff.

The season pass for adults pays itself if you visit at least thrice while the season pass for kids pays itself on 5+ visits.

Rodeo and Concert Ticket

If you want to see a particular entertainer or see the rodeo events, then you need to purchase a Rodeo and Concert Ticket for that day.

The concert is right after the rodeo.

They also provide access to all NRG Park, NRG Arena, and NRG Center activities mentioned above.

These tickets are more expensive than the Grounds tickets with the farthest seating starting at $25.

Expect to pay a lot more >$100 for good seats for popular performers.

Rodeo and Concert Season Pass

The most expensive tickets of them all!

The Rodeo and Concert Season Pass gives you access to all the rodeo events, concerts, and NRG Park activities.

This will be the best deal if you’re a fan of both Country Music as well as Rodeo Events!

Carnival Tickets

While the grounds as well as Rodeo tickets provide access to the carnival, you will need to purchase separate Houston Rodeo carnival tickets to sit in the rides or play games.

Each game/ride costs about 8 to 14 tickets for most attractions.

We recommend keeping aside a minimum of 60 to 80 tickets to enjoy per person on one visit.

Food Tickets

Food tickets are used to purchase food and drinks at any of the concession stands.

You can buy them in bundles of 10 or 20 tickets and they cost around $1 per ticket.

We usually spend about $50 worth on food per person on one visit.

Houston Rodeo Budgeting

That’s right, the rodeo easily gets expensive.

We recommend keeping a budget of $80 – $100 per person at a minimum, when planning your trip.

If you plan to go frequently – you can save per trip by purchasing the season pass as well as half price food and carnival packs.

Free and Discounted entry

The Rodeo has certain days reserved for free and discounted tickets such as First Responders Day and a Community Day, which will be held for the first time in 2023.

These are great ways to save.

Houston Rodeo Parking

Parking can be a real nuisance at the Rodeo, so make sure to arrive early or plan ahead.

Parking gets full closer to the evening performances, if you are arriving around mid-day then you should easily find spots.

Our favorite is the yellow lot, which is closest to the NRG Park and Stadium.

After parking your car, you can easily take a tram from the parking lot to the Rodeo grounds.

Be prepared to pay $25+ for parking in the lots.

Best Times to Visit Houston Rodeo

To skip crowds, we recommend going early at start times.

Also try to avoid spring break week as it can get really crazy there.

Generally, the first week is a great time to visit.

Things to do at the Houston Rodeo for Kids

Wondering what to do at the Houston rodeo for kids as well as families?

The Houston Rodeo has plenty of family friendly events as well as special attractions for kids.

The two main areas to visit with kids are: Junction in NRG park and AGVENTURE in NRG Center.

The grounds are very stroller friendly, here are the very best of things to do at Houston Rodeo with kids.

Visit the petting zoo

Both Junction and AGVENTURE have petting zoos.

The petting zoo includes chickens, sheep, goats, and more.

Kids love to get up close and personal with these animals.

Watch baby animals being born

AGVENTURE has plenty of kid-friendly attractions.

Our favorite is the birthing center, where kids can learn more about the life cycle of farm animals and see just born babies.

Enjoy the other activities at AGVENTURE

Besides the birthing center, there are plenty of agriculture oriented activities at AGVENTURE.

Kids can learn about earthworms and honeybees, see rabbits, watch cows being milked, and see take pony rides.

The attractions are located in Hall A of the NRG Center.

Try your hand at Mutton Bustin’

This is one of the more popular attractions for kids at the rodeo.

Kids compete against each other in a sheep riding competition which is great fun for everyone involved.

Kids that are 5-7 years old can try Mutton bustin’ if they fit within the weight range.

Enjoy the carnival rides

The carnival is located in the Midway area outside of NRG Stadium.

It’s filled with fun activities like rides, games, and food stands.

There are several rides including safe ones for toddlers as well as thrilling ones for older kids.

Ride the antique carousel in the Junction

The Junction is a more chilled area at the rodeo.

Kids can enjoy a ride on the antique carousel which is a highlight.

This area also has plenty of activities for children.

Try the pony rides

The pony rides are a great way to get your kids involved with the rodeo experience.

The ponies are very friendly and well trained, they will take your child on a slow ride.

See the pig races

The pig races are a must see and one of the top free things to do at the Houston Rodeo!

Kids love to watch the pigs race against each other, adding a little friendly competition to their day.

Stop by Fun on the Farm

This area is geared towards children 7 and under.

It teaches the kids about farm life and there are plenty of interactive activities.

Attend the Rodeo Roundup

The celebration kickoffs every year on Go Texan Day – which this year is on Feb 23, 2023.

The Rodeo Roundup is a free admission event that takes place at the City Hall where the Mayor traditionally kicks off the event.

At the event you can enjoy free bbq sandwiches, spot a majestic Texas Longhorn Steer or two, and dance to live music.

See the trail riders

Trail riders are a Houston Rodeo icon.

The trail rides, resembling the cattle drives of Texas, are events where riders astride their horses raise awareness of the Rodeo.

Their arrival in Houston from all over the state and beyond is a highly anticipated event.

The trail riders head to overnight campy at Memorial Park and also participate in the Rodeo Parade.

Participate in the Rodeo Run

The Rodeo Run is a 5K and 10K race that takes place in downtown Houston before the parade.

It’s a great way to get moving while enjoying activities such as live music, entertainment, and more.

Attend the Downtown Houston Rodeo Parade

The annual Houston downtown Rodeo parade is held the Saturday before the Rodeo officially kicks off.

At the entrance near the Champion Wine Garden, you will find Boot Row.

The rodeo is one of the main attractions, of course!

From loaded nachos to funnel cakes and all sorts of deep fried treats, you’ll be sure to find something delicious!

What to do around rodeo, when the big show comes to town, there are plenty of ways to celebrate.

Houston is fixin' to be overrun with boots and chaps. The  2022 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo  rides into town February 28, bringing three weeks of world-class performers , awesome rodeo action, great food and tons of excitement to NRG Park. But not all of the western fun is at the Rodeo itself-here's how to "go Texan" all month-long in H-Town.

Do the Texas Two-Step

Discover the culture, look the part, know your grub, stay nearby.

Looking for country music? You'll certainly find it at the Rodeo, with headline performers including Tim McGraw, Gwen Stefani and many more ( get tickets here ). Apart from the arena concerts, more musical acts will perform at  The Hideout , presented by Jim Beam and the  Wine Garden , presented by Frost Bank on the Rodeo grounds. But if you want to get down away from the crowds, head to one of these Houston country music destinations.

Armadillo Palace . Part honky-tonk and part Texas history museum, Goode's Armadillo Palace gets the mood established right off the bat thanks to the towering armadillo sporting longhorns and breathing smoke right out front. Oh, and you'll love the venison chili.

Daisy Duke's Modern Country Bar . Inside Daisy Duke's you'll find pretty young things donning daisy dukes and cowboy boots serving cocktails and beer to a mixed crowd of post-college kids and baby boomers. The Western-themed décor is reminiscent of a saloon with barrels and beer tubs and wood accents galore. For those in the mood to two-step, Daisy Duke's large dance floor leaves plenty of room to keep guests from standing on top of one another. You'll definitely want to try your skills on the mechanical bull.

Wild West . A part of the Bayou City for over 20 years, Wild West sits on Houston's Richmond strip with a motto of Two-Steppin' & Longneckin'. This country nightclub features a solid oak dance floor just for your boots! From dancin' and glancin' to shooting pool, eating fresh fajitas, playing blackjack, or getting your boots shined, a variety of activities will make your visit enjoyable.

Firehouse Saloon . Put your cowboy boots on and stop by Firehouse Saloon for a live country music concert, dancing or maybe just to drink a local brew. The popular location has been nominated repeatedly for best live music venue in Texas by the Lone Star Magazine. Former firefighters Marty and Tom have owned Firehouse since 2009 and the space continues to embody its name, with décor like uniforms and boots hanging from the ceiling.

Nothing makes Texas culture and history shine quite like Rodeo. From the trail rides to the livestock show, there's always an event to remind folks just what it means to be in the Lone Star State. But if you've got a hankering for more exposure to cowboy culture, check out these attractions.

Cypress Trails Equestrian Center.  Ride like a cowboy at Cypress Trails. Located just 20 minutes north of Downtown Houston, Cypress Trails allows visitors to ride for an hour, or even a full day along the Cypress Creek, through some of the most picturesque parts of Harris County. Experienced stable staff will help match you and your level of riding ability to one of their many horses, from Spanish Mustangs to Appaloosas.

George Ranch Historical Park.  George Ranch is a 23,000-acre working ranch located less than an hour from Houston. The family's original "home place" is at the core of the George Ranch Historical Park where, every day, the legends and legacies of those who shaped this place come to life. See crops being harvested and other demonstrations of ranch life, including cattle wrangling.

San Jacinto Monument . See the birthplace of Texas at the San Jacinto Monument & Museum. This one-time battleground outside the city of La Porte is where Sam Houston and his band of Texians dealt a crushing defeat to the Mexican Army, securing Texas independence and giving rise to the Republic. The San Jacinto Museum of History, within the base of the San Jacinto Monument, holds one of the largest collections of Texas art, artifacts and history.

Everyone wants to play the part of cowboy or cowgirl once in a while, right? Whether you're headed to Rodeo or just want to add that western chic look to your wardrobe, here's your shopping guide.

Cavender's Boot City.  Think of Cavender's as your one-stop-shop for the western look. From a huge selection of men's and women's boots, to cowboy hats and bejeweled belt buckles, this is the place to find it all. Plus, they have multiple locations around town, including one near Reliant Park, perfectly situated for Rodeo.

Lucchese.   Lucchese, the 130-year-old El Paso-based company famed for handcrafted Western boots, opened in Houston's Highland Village in late 2014. The American luxury bootmaker's well-appointed store features the Lucchese Collection of handmade western boots as well as its fashion footwear collection and Equestrian-inspired handbags, clutches, totes, wallets and more.

Pinto Ranch.  At Pinto Ranch you will find authentic furnishings and Indian rugs, handcrafted tack, chaps and saddles, as well as beautifully designed boots, belts, buckles, and apparel.

Tejas Custom Boots.  A pair of custom boots from Jose Gonzales and his team at Tejas are always a work of art. If you're looking to invest in the kind of boots you'll want to hang on to forever, this is the place.

Chili is the official state food of Texas and certainly barbecue comes in a close second. Whether you like your chili with beans or without, and your brisket and ribs dripping in sauce or dry, here are a few places to satisfy your Texas-sized cravings.

Goode Co. Bar-B-Q.  This urbanized, Texana-decorated barbecue joint is wildly popular, thanks to expertly smoked brisket and a variety of platters. The first Goode Co. Barbecue restaurant opened in 1977 and even though they've since added burgers and seafood to the lineup, barbecue remains the company's mainstay.

Killen's.  Opened in 2014, Ronnie Killen's much-lauded barbecue spot in Pearland is an homage to smoked meats. The experience is very Central Texas-like, with barbecue served cafeteria-style on freezer paper and cut to order. Meats are sold by the pound or as one-, two-, or three-meat plates.

Pizzitola's.  Opened in 1934 by pit master legend, John Davis, and continued since 1983 by Jerry Pizzitola, some of Houston's finest ribs, brisket, chicken, and links are hickory smoked on Mr. Davis' original "open pits."

Pappas Bar-B-Q.  A favorite for slow-smoked, lean and juicy Texas barbeque with all the trimmings, at Pappas Bar-B-Q you can get good food and plenty of it. Dig in to brisket, ribs, sausage and much more, plus great Texas-style chili.

Rodeo opening weekend returns with cook-off, Go Texan Day, trail rides and parade

HOUSTON, Texas -- Fans across the Gulf Coast are ready to cowboy up as the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is back in the saddle after a 2021 hiatus. The big, 90th anniversary celebration officially kicks off February 28 and runs through March 20, but this weekend offers a slew of events for locals to get rodeo-ready.

Already, foodies got into the action with the annual Rodeo Uncorked! Best Bites competition. For music fans, plenty of tickets are still available for the month-long concerts; Houston rap icon Bun B just announced new additions to his historic H-Town Takeover on March 11.

Now, Houstonians can grab those hats, boots - and even running shoes - as the rodeo returns with trail rides, cookoffs, parades, and even a fun run. Here's our roundup of the can't-miss events.

World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, February 24 - 26

In this smokin' showdown, presented by Cotton Holdings, more than 250 barbecue teams will face off from Thursday, February 24 through Saturday, February 26. Folk from all over the Lone Star State and the world will compete for champion titles in these categories: Brisket, Ribs, Chicken, Go Texan, and Dutch Oven Dessert, plus the new Open Contest, where teams may enter their dish of choice, except desserts.

2023 Rodeo Houston: Using the METRO for rides to Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo

HOUSTON - If you're not going to the Houston Rodeo this year, you're missing out big time! But if you are, take some stress off of finding a ride to and from by using the METRO.

The METRO is offering various options for your trip to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo from the METRORail to the local bus and METRO's Maxey Park and Ride Service.

Rides from the METRORail and local buses will cost $1.25 each way while children 5-year-old and younger can ride for free.

RODEO: Get ready to rodeo! Trail rides, BBQ contest, parade & more events this week

If you're visiting RodeoHouston and want to drive to that event for quick access, you can park your car at the Fannin South Transit Center for $20, cash only, and ride the METRORail one stop to NRG Park. All occupants of the vehicle will receive a free round-trip rail ticket.

• Total attendance for all activities on the grounds, Feb. 23 – 25 (World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, presented by Cotton Holdings ) and Feb. 28 – March 19, 2023 (Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo) reached 2,479,004 .
• In three days, the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest entertained 214,903 guests.

• Nearly 200,000 individual items of Rodeo and entertainer merchandise went home with fans, including 108,000 caps and T-shirts, and koozies. Plus, over 36,000 reusable bags, and over 11,000 lapel pins.

• Calf scramble and judging contest winners received 374 certificates, each worth $2,250, to apply toward the purchase of a registered beef heifer or steer to exhibit at the 2024 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Certificate premiums totaled $841,500.
• Calf scramble exhibitors from 2022 who returned with their heifer or steer projects to compete at the 2023 Houston Livestock Show received more than $100,000 total in premiums and awards.
• The Super Scramble competition was added in 2022, where the 19 “First Catch” scramblers from each of the previous 19 Calf Scramble performances were invited to participate in the event Sunday, March 19, 2023. The 19 scramblers had an extra chance to catch one of the nine calves during the event, and each participant was awarded a cash prize based on their performance. The event awarded an additional $42,000 in cash prizes for Texas youth.

🍎 Scholarships and education:

• The Rodeo committed $22,560,562 to the youth of Texas in 2023: - $14,286,000 in scholarships to be awarded this summer; - $5,292,250 to junior show exhibitors; - $2,517,722 in educational program grants; and - $464,590 in graduate assistantships.

🏆 Houston Rodeo:

• RODEOHOUSTON committed $2.178 million to its contestants in 2023.
• The 2023 RODEOHOUSTON Super Series invited the world’s top rodeo athletes to compete in eight traditional rodeo events. - RODEOHOUSTON introduced its second women’s only event to the competition, Breakaway Roping. - RODEOHOUSTON Super Series athletes competed for a share of $2,178,000 in prize money. Each event champion rode out of NRG Stadium with $50,000, plus winnings from the preliminary rounds.

• For 2023, RODEOHOUSTON split its Wild Card Round into a two-day event, eliminating the RODEOHOUSTON Super Shootout from the schedule. The money from RODEOHOUSTON’s previous one-day Super Shootout event was redistributed towards the Super Series purse paying down to 5th and 6th places. 360 contestants competed over the 20-day event.
• RODEOHOUSTON added two new local qualifiers for 2023 – Fort Bend County Fair and Rodeo in Rosenberg, Texas and Waller County Fair and Rodeo in Hempstead, Texas.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

Special Children’s Events

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ is an experience everyone should enjoy. The Rodeo’s Special Children’s Committee interviews social agencies and schools so physically/developmentally challenged children and adults may attend Houston’s biggest event.

Top Hands Horse Show

Riders of all ages and skill levels from therapeutic riding facilities from Houston and the surrounding areas are offered the opportunity to participate in this competitive horse show. It consists of classes in showmanship at halter, English equitation, Western equitation, trail-obstacle, pole bending and barrel racing. The competition includes divisions based on the assistance needed by the rider, enabling a variety of riders with different levels of disabilities to participate.

LIL' RUSTLERS RODEO

The Lil’ Rustlers Rodeo puts 4 to 10 year old special needs children in the middle of the action as they compete in the Main Arena of NRG Center. This lively, fun event occurs on three nights with nearly 60 participants each night. Little bull riders, steer ropers and barrel racers let their imaginations run wild as they live out cowboy dreams with fun and safe critters, assisted by real cowboys and cowgirls.

Special Children's Committee Day Tours

The Special Children’s Committee hosts tours for more than 1,500 special needs individuals. These groups, which are primarily from schools, have the opportunity to tour AGVENTURE, see the pig races, spend the day at Fun on the Farm, and more.

PERFORMANCE NIGHTS

Each year, approximately 3,000 special-needs children and adults watch the Rodeo competition over a three-night period.
