Inside Bad Boy Family Reunion, 2016’s Most Hit-Packed Tour

By Christopher R. Weingarten

Christopher R. Weingarten

Minutes before he was belting his 1998 hit “Victory” from a riser extending high up into the smoky air of New York’s Madison Square Garden, rapper-mogul Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs seemed in search of the right vibes: three bouquets of roses adding a fragrant touch to his cabana-style backstage lounge, a request for some gospel, then some James Brown followed by some Soul Train videos on his big-screen TV. During a quick meeting with production manager Bobby Schneider, he attempted to similarly set a mood for the packed crowd.

“I’m tellin’ you, for this intro? If you can unplug some plugs,” says Puff from his couch. “It’s my last night in New York and I want it dark.”

“I wish I could,” Schneider replies.

“You can do whatever you wanna do. Think about that.”

Few understand doing the impossible like Combs, who turned a label built on adventurous, highly lyrical New York hip-hop singles into the most formidable hit-making machine of the late Nineties. The 20-date Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour, gathers most of the names that built the empire: Ma$e, Lil Kim, Faith Evans, Mario Winans, Total, Carl Thomas, 112 and the L.O.X. Combined they have 35 Top 20 hits between them, and that’s not even taking into account their work with the late icon Notorious B.I.G.

All in the Family! Sean “Diddy” Combs and the Bad Boy Family Reunion Crew

The hip-hop family on their reunion tour performance in los angeles..

By Edward Barsamian

Video by Austin Simkins

In 1993, Sean Combs founded Bad Boy Entertainment, giving the East Coast a powerful new sound and forever changing the course of hip-hop. The roster was made up of Combs’s closest friends—The Notorious B.I.G. and Faith Evans among them—with the label taking a personal approach to developing and mentoring talent like Bow Wow and French Montana. To celebrate more than 20 years, the collective took the stage at the 2015 BET Awards in Los Angeles and kicked off the Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour earlier this year.

This past May, the group returned with two sold-out, back-to-back nights at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The family was joined by special guests Jay Z, Mary J. Blige, and DMX. More than two decades after their groundbreaking beginnings, the performances continue to resonate with fans, which had Combs taking stock of just how far they’ve come. “The first time we did Madison Square Garden it felt like we really made it. It was a beautiful thing to support your hometown and to be able to play an arena you dreamt about your whole life.” For artist Carl Thomas, nothing could compare to being part of the Bad Boy family, saying that his life changed forever “the day this man signed me.” With their reunion tour concluding this week in California, director Austin Simkins captures the magic behind one of music’s first families.

Sean “Diddy” Combs

“The first time we did MSG. Felt like we really made it. We had just gone through everything with Biggie and we were still there as a family. It was a beautiful thing to support your hometown and to be able to play an arena you dreamed about your whole life.”

Mary J. Blige

Christian combs.

“That time we went to Ireland. I was like 6 or 7 years old, it was my birthday and he brought me onstage and I started singing.”

“My first concert that Puff took me too and asked me if I want to be a star or just a rapper that just raps in the club. It was a Bone Thugs concert.”

“My first time at the Barclays and seeing the full show together with Mary J. coming out for the first time. DMX, Jay Z just joining everybody. Faith came out and crushed it.”

Fans will be able to catch Puff and his extended family, which will include, Ma$e, Faith Evans, Carl Thomas, L.O.X., Lil’ Kim, 112, French Montana and more. Puff Daddy Kicks Off 'Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour' in Brooklyn

Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs is the walking definition of overcoming adversity and flourishing from your wins. The 46-year-old hip-hop mogul reflected on his journey for a moment Friday night as thousands at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center watched, sharing his story of getting fired as an A&R at Uptown Records by Andre Harrell and founding Bad Boy Records, the juggernaut East Coast-based label with over 20 years of artists and hits under its belt.

[rap-up-photo id=”247207″]

Anyone else would crumble after losing their job, but Puff’s ear for talent was uncanny. He was instrumental in developing Mary J. Blige, and nearly two decades later she was still appreciative. When Blige came out to perform timeless hits “Real Love,” “Be Happy,” and “You Don’t Have to Worry,” she thanked him for taking a tomboy living in the projects and transforming her into the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, whose signature baggy look became a staple of the ’90s.

“There will be no Bad Boy without Mary J. Blige,” Puffy said, which set the tone for a deafening singalong of “I’m Goin’ Down.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFrVsoBMztg/

There were plenty of thank-you tributes just like this from all his guests throughout the first sold-out show on the “Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour,” held in honor of The Notorious B.I.G.’s 44th birthday. (The group will return for a second concert tonight.) Puff accomplished the near-impossible task of condensing a significant chunk of hip-hop and R&B history into four hours, giving fans flashes of nostalgia as the likes of Total, 112, Carl Thomas, Faith Evans, The LOX, Lil’ Kim, and Ma$e performed their classics from the Bad Boy catalogue to a sold-out crowd. Puff, ever the perfectionist, was nearly two hours late, but that didn’t bother the audience as they suddenly got out of their seats when a countdown appeared on-screen, signaling that greatness was on its way.

Behind video montages of key markers in Bad Boy’s past, the label’s alumni emerged wearing all black and Puff rose from beneath the custom-made Bad Boy stage to kick things off with “Victory” featuring the night’s first guest Busta Rhymes. Within minutes, fans were taken back to the Shiny Suit Era. Puff and his longtime partner Ma$e ran through “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” and “Been Around the World.” It didn’t stop there: 112 serenaded the crowd with their string of hits, “It’s Over Now,” “Dance With Me,” and “Peaches & Cream.” Then it was Kima, Keisha, and Pam’s turn, sounding pitch-perfect when they delivered “Trippin'” and “Kissin’ You.” Total performing in 2016 may sound insane on paper, but these were the type of reactions that hip-hop’s most influential entertainer wanted you to have.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFrJuAbPMX7/

Each act had about 15 minutes or so to command the arena, so they made sure to make it count. Over the course of Bad Boy’s illustrious legacy, fans have latched on to their favorites as the years have gone by, waiting for concerts like this to see if they still got it. Despite spotty sound issues, Bad Boy’s marquee artists—The LOX, Carl Thomas, and the incomparable Faith Evans—all received cheers from their faithful fans, even growing louder as those undeniable tracks like Faith’s “I Love You” echoed throughout the arena.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9Ee29KQhCo

After French Montana and Rick Ross zipped us back to modern times with anthems “Stay Schemin'” and “Pop That,” Puff paid special tribute to Biggie with an emotional performance of “Angels.” A white spotlight shined on him, and the Bad Boy platform rose just high enough for Puff to speak directly to his friend from up above.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFp7HYxlYW5/

Jay Z, who missed out on Blue Ivy’s recital for this, did his verse on the dedication track, and in a rare occasion looked like the little brother to big brother Puffy. “You’ve been there with me from my ups and downs. Whenever I get in trouble, this is the one I call. This my strategist right here. This my brother. This B.I.G.’s brother. This Brooklyn’s own Brooklyn!” he shouted, before politely asking to perform his favorite song, “Public Service Announcement,” which Hov happily obliged.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFrVfnfnR2t/

If Jigga wasn’t enough, Nas came out for “Hate Me Now” with Puff—both wearing big fur coats that required two guys each to hold the ends. God level.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHKCde77KA0

The surprises went into overdrive after that. Busta returned to perform “Pass the Ciroc” (no Courvoisier). Lil’ Kim—dressed in all white—rapped her verse on “Quiet Storm (Remix),” continuing to prove she’s the OG Queen Bee with a word-for-word exchange of “Queen Bitch” with the crowd. Mario Winans hit us with “I Don’t Wanna Know,” Cassie crushed her smash single “Me & U,” and Ty Dolla $ign joined Diddy for “You Could Be My Lover.” Usher also surprised with “U Don’t Have to Call” and “I Need a Girl, Pt. 1 and 2.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkHXz-6x2lw

Just when Puff had the crowd reeling, he wanted to make sure we were really having fun. He saved the best set of songs for last, dedicating a portion of the show to Biggie where he projected videos from songs such as “Warning” and “Juicy.” This was the apex because the entire Bad Boy family also returned for remixes and guest spots. Lil Cease did his thing on “Player’s Anthem,” as well as Kim and The LOX for the remix of “It’s All About the Benjamins.” Black Rob performed his street banger “Whoa!” Ma$e joined Puff and tore down “Mo Money Mo Problems.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvpWJU92P-w

The closer for the evening was “I’ll Be Missing You,” a touching performance with Faith belting her chorus alongside a gospel choir that all happened right as Biggie’s would-be 44th birthday rang in. Confetti and balloons fell from the sky. “Happy birthday, playboy,” Puff said. But it wasn’t over: he and the Family brought out a cake for everyone to sing happy birthday to one of the greatest MCs of our time. Life after death is still sweet for the Notorious.

Diddy takes ‘victory lap’ with Bad Boy reunion tour

New York – Leave it to Sean “Diddy” Combs to go out in style.

Combs says he will leave his Puff Daddy and Diddy days behind him and retire from music following the release and tour supporting his upcoming album, “No Way Out 2.”

“I’m going to put out my last album and devote 100 percent of my time to doing films,” Combs told Cigar Aficionado magazine. “I want to stop at a great place ... and a final album is a great place to stop. I want to take a victory lap, to do a world tour and really enjoy it one last time.”

That victory lap begins Friday with the Bad Boy Family Reunion, as Combs brings together many of the artists from the Bad Boy Records roster for an appearance on NBC’s “Today” as part of its Summer Concert Series and later that night and Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, marking what would have been the late Notorious B.I.G.’s 44th birthday.

A Bad Boy Reunion Tour will follow this summer, kicking off in Columbus on Aug. 25, with a stop at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Sept. 2. Tickets will go on sale Friday.

“This isn’t just another concert,” Combs said announcing the show. “This is hip-hop history ... . The Bad Boy Family includes some of the biggest names in music and songs that helped define a whole generation of music. Also, we are celebrating one of the greatest of all time — Notorious B.I.G. This will be a night to remember.”

The night — which will feature Bad Boy hitmakers like Lil’ Kim and Mase, as well as Jay Z and Mary J. Blige — will be a throwback to the days when the Notorious B.I.G. and Puff Daddy took over the music industry.

In the ’90s, Biggie’s string of hits starting with “Juicy” and “Big Poppa” launched the East Coast rap style, which competed with the West Coast rap of 2Pac and N.W.A. for control of hip-hop and the top of the pop charts.

Biggie and Puffy opted for a flashier style — the shiny suits, the big jewelry — to offset the grittier tales of life in Brooklyn, creating not just a sound that was in demand but a look as well.

After Biggie’s murder in 1997, Combs regrouped and released his own album, “No Way Out,” which went gold in its first week, and a tribute to Biggie called “I’ll Be Missing You” that became the first hip-hop song to debut at No. 1, staying there for 11 weeks. It was eventually pushed from No. 1 by The Notorious B.I.G.’s posthumous hit with Puff Daddy, “Mo Money, Mo Problems.”

In 1997, Puff Daddy held the No. 1 spot for 19 weeks with three of his singles, including his debut “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down,” which showed off the Bad Boy style of taking ’80s pop samples and turning them into hip-hop anthems.

It’s that era that Combs wants to celebrate with the Bad Boy Family Reunion, as well as his expected international tour next year.

Though many of Bad Boy’s artists went on to leave the label and collaborate with others, most seem happy to pay tribute to the era that gave them their start.

“I’m in my comfort zone when I’m with my Bad Boy family,” Lil Kim recently told Billboard. “We have such an organic, natural connection when we’re onstage. It’s perfect, it’s fun. It’s just second nature to me.”

Combs has been planning his exit from music for a while. In November, he released his “MMM” album as a birthday surprise, calling it “a thank-you to my fans and is just the beginning, a prelude to what will be my final album, ‘No Way Out 2.’ ”

Though he has long split his time between his fashion lines, his acting career on Broadway and in films, Combs has recently been focusing more and more on what he sees as his final album and his musical legacy.

“When I’m gone, only the songs will survive,” Combs told Cigar Aficionado for the magazine’s June issue. “I know I’m making music that will live on. I don’t go into the studio just to be hot or to hear myself on the radio. Michael Jackson, Tupac, Biggie — part of them lives on in their music, even though they’re not here anymore. That’s really deep, man. The only thing like that is religion.”

All in the Bad Boy family

Building on the success of The Notorious B.I.G., Puff Daddy created The Family, an eclectic group of artists on his Bad Boy label who each had a certain niche in the roster. Here’s a look at the hitmakers of the late ’90s:

Faith Evans

Best known for: Being hailed the “First lady of Bad Boy Records” and her whirlwind courtship and marriage to The Notorious B.I.G. nine days after meeting

Biggest hit: “Love Like This” (No. 7, 1998)

Best known for: No-holds-barred rap style and sexed-up rhymes that made her one of hip-hop’s biggest stars

Biggest hit: “Not Tonight” (No. 6, 1997)

Best known for: Graduating from Puff Daddy’s right-hand-man on hits like “Can’t Hold Me Down” into a star in his own right on his chart-topping debut “Harlem World.”

Biggest hit: “Feels So Good” (No. 5, 1997)

Mario Winans

Best known for: Branching out from the mighty gospel family The Winans to produce and write, then grabbing the spotlight with his smooth soul style

Biggest hit: “I Don’t Wanna Know” (No. 2, 2004)

Best known for: The trio was Bad Boy’s New Jill Swing girl group (the female version of the New Jack Swing movement created by Teddy Riley) rolling up a string of R&B hits

Biggest hit: “Kissin’ You” (No. 12, 1996)

Carl Thomas

Best known for: The soulful crooner of Bad Boy, singing hooks on label mates’ tracks and his own love songs

Biggest hit: “I Wish” (No. 20, 2000)

Best known for: Bringing the boy band style of ‘N Sync to Bad Boy, with sweet R&B-tinged pop

Biggest hit: “It’s Over Now” (No. 6, 2000)

Best known for: Spawning solo stars Jadakiss, Styles and Sheek, following their time as Bad Boy’s reigning rap group

Biggest hit: “Money, Power & Respect” (No. 17, 1998)
