vinetas blanco1

In 711 CE, Muslims from North Africa invaded the Iberian Peninsula. They stayed in Spain until 1492 when the Catholic Monarchs overthrew the King of the “Emirato de Granada.”

As a result, Spain has a rich, overflowing Islamic culture and an enormous artistic and architectural heritage, including palaces, mosques, and much more.

With that in mind, we have put together a list of the Best Islamic Tours of Spain while citing the most Famous Islamic Architecture and Art in Spain.

The Mosque of Cordoba Tour

What are the best islamic tours in spain.

  • The Mosque of Cordoba

image11

The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba was built in the 8th century  under Emir Abd ar-Rahman I on the remains of a Visigothic Christian church (the Basilica of St. Vincent Martyr).

The Emir wanted Cordoba to eclipse Byzantium and Baghdad in science, culture, and the arts. The sultan had recently fled there after his family’s overthrow in Damascus.

Why should you go on an Islamic Tour of the Mosque of Córdoba?

There are many reasons why you should visit The Mosque of Cordoba. For instance, the Mosque of Cordoba was the second largest mosque in the world, behind Mecca for a long time.

In addition, the Mosque of Cordoba is a unique construction because of the number of architectural styles it preserves: Mudejar, Umayyad, Baroque, Gothic, and Renaissance.

How long does the Mosque of Cordoba tour last?

The duration of the visit is approximately one hour, but if you do the visit during the daytime, you can stay for as long as you need.

How much does the Mosque of Cordoba tour cost?

The prices vary depending on the time of the visit and the type of ticket:

Visit the Mosque-Cathedral during the daytime.

General admission: 11€.

Discount: 9€ for over 65s, 15 to 26 years old students, and Youth Card holders.

Uncover your head when entering the Mosque-Cathedral. Remember that you are visiting a sacred place; access it with appropriate clothing.

Do I need to bring my passport?

It is not necessary to bring your original passport. A copy or a photo should be fine.

Other information of interest

The use of tripods or stands is prohibited, as well as the filming and photographing of liturgical celebrations.

The Alhambra and Generalife, Granada

The Alhambra was a palace, citadel, and fortress, the residence of the Nasrid sultans, high officials, court servants, and elite soldiers. It reached its splendor in the second half of the 14th century, coinciding with the sultanates of Yusuf I (1333-1354) and the second reign of Muhammad V (1362-1391).

image2 1

Why should you visit the Alhambra and Generalife?

The Alhambra is a must-see monument. It bears witness to the Moorish rule in the territory and its architectural style, which is why it was recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

You should also make a visit to enjoy its gardens and surroundings. Its majestic towers are a must-see once-in-a-lifetime experience.

How long does the Alhambra and Generalife tour last?

The general visit to the monumental complex lasts approximately three hours.

How much does the Alhambra and Generalife tour cost?

Different prices depending on the inclusions:

  • Price: 14 €
  • Nasrid Palaces: Mexuar, Comares Palace, Palace of the Lions and Corredor-Lindaraja.
  • Partal: portico of the palace, gardens, and walks.

  • Casas Moriscas: Horno de oro, Chapiz y Zafra.
  • Qubba del Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo.

Dress code of the Alhambra and Generalife

The Alhambra has no specific dress code. Depending on the time of year, we recommend either something cool to deal with the hot Summer temperatures or, in Winter taking a jumper due to the breeze.

It is mandatory to present your original ID or passport to access the monumental complex.

It’s essential to be on time for the Nasrid Palaces. Don’t forget to bring the ticket with its QR code in physical or digital format (including for children under 12 years).

Aljafería Palace, Zaragoza

The Aljafería Palace is an 11th-century Moorish castle-palace. It was built as a recreational residence for the Taifa kings in the 11th century under King al-Muqtadir. Remains of its fortified enclosure are still preserved. It was built as a place of recreation and also served as a defensive building.

image4 1

Why should you visit the Aljafería Palace?

You can not miss the Aljaferia Palace because it is considered one of the peaks of Hispano-Muslim art, along with the Alhambra in Granada and the Mosque of Cordoba.

Also, it is the northernmost Islamic palace in Europe and the most luxurious and best-preserved of the Taifa period.

How long does the Aljafería Palace tour last?

The duration depends on if the visit is guided or not. Free tours are about 45 minutes long, and guided tours are 60 minutes.

How much does the Aljafería Palace tour cost?

The prices are as follows:

  • General admission: 5€.
  • Discount: 1€ for students and the retired.
  • Free: Children under 12 years old.

Dress code of the Aljafería Palace

There is no specific dress code, so we recommend dressing according to the season. The Summer will be tremendously hot, so dress light and apply plenty of sun cream. Alternatively, a jumper is a great idea against the wind in the Winter.

Guided visits will be available during July and August. The English tour begins at 11 am, while the French tour starts at 5 pm.

Please be punctual when arriving at the ticket office. If a visitor is ten minutes late, they risk not being able to enter the palace (or at the very least a lengthy wait) if all other groups are full.

Use the QR codes located at various points of the monument and the brochures available.

Follow the route marked inside the palace and the indications on display.

Madinat al-Zahra: Archaeological Ensemble, Córdoba

image3 1

The history of Medina Azahara begins with Abderraman, III. He decided to build a city on the outskirts of Cordoba between 936 and 976. Abderraman, III built the city to bring together the caliphate’s administrative and residential work.

The materials used in its construction tell us of the great interest of the monarch to show his great power and supremacy.

Why should you visit Medina Azahara?

Medina Azhara is a must-see because it’s one of Andalusia’s most important works of Muslim art. In its time, it was the highest expression of the rise and power of the Caliphate of Cordoba.

How long does the Medina Azahara tour last?

The approximate time of the visit to Medina Azahara, including the museum tour, is between 2.5 and 3 hours.

How much does the Medina Azahara tour cost?

The entrance to Medina Azahara is free for citizens of the European Union. For all other visitors, the entrance fee is 1.50 €.

There is no specific dress code to enter the Medina Azahara. Therefore, dress according to the season; in the Summer months, something light and fresh, while in Winter, a jumper (or if very cold, a coat) to stay warm.

It is not necessary to bring your original passport. A copy should be fine to authenticate your nationality.

There is a bus that drives you from Cordoba to Medina Azahara. Its price is 2,50€. Children between 5-12 years are 1,50€.

The Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville

In the year 913, the Umayyad caliph Abderramán III ordered the construction of a new center of government in Seville on the site of an ancient Visigothic settlement that had previously been Roman.

This “multicultural” curiosity about its foundation seems a foretaste of the many historical ups and downs that would shape its present appearance.

After the disintegration of the Caliphate of Cordoba, the Royal Alcazar would pass into the hands of the abbots (Taifa of Seville), the Almoravid emirs, and, in the last Islamic Period, the Almohads.

The successive reforms of that time had already turned the Real Alcázares into an excellent palace complex surrounded by walls in the middle of the 13th century.

image6

Why should you visit The Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville?

The Alcázar of Seville was built as a fortress to protect the Muslim authorities and is currently the oldest royal palace in Europe. Its extensive history is reflected in the variety of its architecture, which mixes Baroque with Renaissance, Romanesque, Gothic and Mudejar.

How long does the Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville tour last?

The recommended duration of the visit is two hours, although you can make a quick visit in one hour and fifteen minutes. But if you want to do a detailed visit, it requires about three hours.

How much does the Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville tour cost?

The entry fees are as follows:

  • General admission: 14,50€.
  • Pensioners and students from 17 to 25 years old: 7€ (you must show proof at reception).
  • For children under 13 years old: 1€.
  • Audioguide: 6€.

There is no specific dress code. Seville can be unbearably hot during the Summer, so dress light. During the Winter, you will likely only need a jumper at most.

The use of tripods or stands is prohibited.

Famous Islamic Architecture in Spain

Muslim art, also known as Islamic art, is the set of artistic manifestations that occurred in the different religious areas of Islam.

Islamic art and, in particular, Islamic architecture in Spain can be classified into 5 stages depending on the different reigns:

1. Cordovan or Caliphal Period (8th-11th century)

Characteristics.

Cordovan art has many influences from Visigothic art, especially in the use of horseshoe arches.

It’s also very characteristic to see voussoirs in color and texture (alternating striped colors). This alfiz is a molding explicitly used to frame the arches or the openings of windows and doors.

image9

The famous art of this period

During this period, the most well-known pieces of architecture are:

  • Central vault of Macsura
  • The Mosque of Bad el-Mardum in Toledo
  • Madinat as-Zahra Palace in Cordoba

2. Taifa Period (11th-12th century)

The art of the Taifa kingdoms was characterized by emulating the splendor of the previous era, with almost excessive overloading of ornamental constructions.

Despite the everyday use of low-cost plasterwork materials, it served its ornamental function well. Unfortunately, very few buildings have been preserved due to poor quality materials.

image7

Famous art of this period

One of the few buildings we still have from this Period is La Aljafería Palace in Zaragoza.

3. Almorávide Period (12th century)

The use of the muqarnas characterized its artistic manifestations. This decorative element is a stalactite hanging from the arches and domes and is made of plaster, often polychrome.

It is an art that is heavily linked to the Taifa kingdoms. However, there are hardly any remains and significant samples of this period, the best preserved being those found in North Africa.

4. Almohade Period (12th century)

This civilization arrived in the Peninsula and brought with it

image8

one of the most original and new elements that had not been used before, known as sebka. Sebka is a type of geometric decoration in the form of a network of superimposed rhombuses that masks the construction systems.

The most important building of this period was the Mosque of Seville nowadays. Only a few parts have been preserved:

  • Patio de los naranjos
  • The “minaret” today is known as the Giralda

5.Nazarí period (13th-15th century)

image10

The materials were poor but covered with plasterwork, marble, sebka, and tiles. As for constructive elements, the most common are the round arches and the white marble columns with thin shafts and Corinthian capitals.

Since Granada was the capital of Al-Andalus during this time, all the representations of this period are in La Alhambra.

Some parts worth mentioning are:

  • Patio del Cuadro Dorado.
  • Patio de Comares.
  • Patio de los Leones.

Famous Islamic Art in Spain

Unfortunately, there remain very few Islamic art sculptures and paintings in Spain. However, we know that Muslim decorative arts varied, ranging from ceramics to carpets, fabrics, and goldsmiths.

Among the few sculptural works that have been preserved, it is worth mentioning the bronze fawn from the Madinat as-Zahra Palace in Cordoba.

In painting, it is of particular interest the fresco on tesso painted on the vault of the Sala de los Reyes of the Alhambra with courtly themes and hunting.

Which city in Spain has a famous old mosque?

The oldest mosque in Spain is the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba. It used to be a mosque, although nowadays it is a catholic cathedral.

What was the Islamic capital of Spain?

The capital of Islamic Spain has varied throughout the years.

Firstly, the capital changed between Seville and Cordoba during “Valiato de Al-Ándalus” between 711 and 756 CE.

Later on, in 756 CE Abd al-Rahman III declared religious independence and proclaimed “El Califato de Córdoba” in Cordoba as its capital.

Lastly and due to the reconquest, in 1238, the “Emirato de Granada” was established. Granada became its capital until 1492 when the Catholic Monarchs overthrew King Muhammad XII.

This morning you’ll arrive at Malaga Airport where our local guide will be waiting to greet you.

We’ll head straight out to take you for lunch (around 15€) before heading Ronda, where you’ll see the famous Puente Nuevo bridge .

From Ronda we’ll take a scenic route to the famous city of Seville, where our local guide will walk you through centuries of Islamic history. We’ll start at the Royal Alcazar , a Christian palace built by Muslim craftsmen with unique mudejar decoration. Our next stop will take you to the Giralda Tower , what once formed the minaret of the Mosque of Seville in 1182. Our final stop on our walking tour of Sevilla is the iconic Plaza España , where we’ll try to catch golden hour. You’ll then have some free time to explore the Muslim quarters before dinner.

Overnight in Sevilla.

Walking through the narrow-whitewashed streets of Cordoba feels like taking a step back in time. Today you’ll visit the gem of this city, which is also one of the oldest mosques in Europe. We’ll then take you to have a lunch inside a beautiful courtyard garden , Moorish style. Throughout the day our local guide will share the stories of the first Muslims in Spain , how they helped create a Golden Age of civilisation in the region before their expulsion by the Spanish inquisition.

You’ll have some free time to explore Cordoba’s meandering streets before we take you out for dinner in the countryside with a local Muslim family. Overnight in Cordoba.

You’ll have some time this morning to explore Cordoba at your leisure before we head out to explore a 1000-year-old gem.

The once sumptuous city of Madinat al Zahra is now only a shadow of its former grandeur, having  slept for almost 1000 years under layers of dirt.  The city was sacked in 1010, less than seventy years after it was built, and the beautiful furnishings – down to even the marble slabs – were stolen or quarried. This is the  largest city ever built from scratch  in Western Europe, but chances are you’ve never even heard of it. Overnight in Granada.

Today you’ll experience something only few people who have visited Spain been fortunate enough to experience.

Local expert and guide Yasin Maymir will host you in the Alhambra Palace, the most visited monument in Spain and the best Preserved Medieval Muslim  Royal Palace  in the World. Yasin will “ Read the Alhambra ” to you by following the Arabic inscriptions on the walls. The hidden meanings, du’a, Qur’an, and poetry inscribed on these walls make the Alhambra once of the most unique forms of Islamic architecture in the world.

This afternoon you’ll pray in the mosque of Granada and then some free time to explore the Albayzin, Granada’s old town. Overnight in Granada.

After Breakfast we will make our trip to the Alpujarra mountains , where the last Muslims of Al Andalus were living and practicing Islam for more than 150 years after the conquest of Granada. New Muslims are living here now, where they nurture olive plantations which produce olive oil for the whole year, with the same olives once planted by the Muslims of the past. You’ll visit the traditional village of Pampaneira , where you can explore the carpet-weavers workshop and Chocolate Factory, as well as roam through the traditional houses, streets and architecture of this village . After lunch you’ll be able to walk through Orange Orchards and Olive Trees , before heading to the local Masjid to pray and meet the local Muslims. Overnight in Granada.

Should you wish to extend your stay in Spain, let us know and we can assist you with accommodation, transport and anything else you require. Arrival time at Malaga airport is 9:30-10:00 am

Seville houses one of the most famous and iconic remnants of Islamic Spain – the Real Alcazar, or Royal Alcazar – a remarkable palace built by the Muslim ruling class in the 8 th century. It is a fine and unique example of Mudéjar art – a style, deeply rooted in cultural diversity and originating from practising Muslims living in Christian territories in historical Spain.

Marvel at the Seville Cathedral, originally AlJama Mosque constructed by the order of the Almohad caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf. Admire the Giralda, now a bell tower for the cathedral, but originally the minaret of the mosque, and in its time the tallest tower in the world, designed to resemble the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakesh.

One of the world’s greatest Islamic buildings and a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Mezquita, or Grand Mosque of Cordoba, is a symbol of the worldly, sophisticated culture that flourished here more than a millennium ago, in the 8 th century, when Córdoba was capital of Islamic Spain and western Europe’s biggest, most cultured city.

The design evolved for around 200 years to its final form as the Grand Mosque, until it was repurposed as a cathedral and altered accordingly. One of the most famous features of the building is its 856 double arches that are modelled on the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba remains a truly mesmerizing building that exudes history, culture and opulence.

Ronda, spectacularly located atop El Tajo gorge and overlooking most of the region, has a rich Islamic heritage which can be seen through its magnificent architecture, with most of it being created after the fall of Cordoba’s caliphate, when it became Taifah Ronda, an independent Muslim kingdom. The town is famously known for the best-preserved bathhouses (hammams) of that era in the whole of Spain as well as for being the birthplace of celebrated polymath, inventor and engineer Abbas ibn Firnas.

The 17 th century Puente Viejo, the Old Bridge, also known as the Arab Bridge, crosses over the Guadalevin river. The breath-taking scenery, the surrounding mountains, the flowing river, coupled with rich history and warm culture, make Ronda a definite stop for anyone touring Islamic Spain.

Granada, the last stronghold of Muslims in Spain, is filled with exquisite architecture and serene surroundings telling of a historic time in which Muslims ruled over this region. Every turn speaks of remnants of this age and the prosperity enjoyed by the people living there.

You’ll be taken back to this time as you walk through the picturesque arches, stroll through the Arab quarter or drink tea at one of teterías of Albayacin.

The iconic and astonishing AlHambra, standing at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, Spain’s highest mountain range, is a jewel in the crown of Islamic Spain. Developed in the 13 th century, Alhambra, a series of palaces, citadel, gardens and orchards, was the residence for the Nasarid sultans and elites, the last remaining Muslim dynasty in Al-Andalus. The profound beauty in its architectural design, intricate detail and engineering leaves visitors in awe of its allure.

Known as the ‘city of three cultures’ due to the peaceful coexistence of  Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities for centuries. Toldeo’s magnificence comes from the numerous mosques, synagogues and churches alongside its palaces and fortresses. Amongst the most famous are the Catedral Primada de Toledo, a gothic cathedral, the Mezquita del

Cristo de La Cruz, the Mosque of Christ of the Light, a 10 th century mosque and the Santa María la Blanca, a former synagogue built in the Muslims style of construction.

Gaze in wonder at the rich and diverse history of Toldeo that exudes out of its buildings, landscapes and culture. A UNESCO World Heritage site, still preserving its original layout and accessible through its narrow, winding streets, Toldeo will leave you deeply fascinated with Islamic Spain.

11 Must-Visit Islamic Historical Sites In Spain

muslim spain tour

There are a few things that unquestionably and quintessentially create an image of a country, and Spain has done wonders when it comes to its diverse culture, food, and people along with having a long list of breathtaking phenomena that are firmly instilled into Spain's DNA.

Along with other attractions in Spain, one of the major contributing factors for Spain to be the way it is today is due to its rich overflowing Islamic culture, past and present, consisting of grandiose palaces, mosques built and constructed over the eras and monuments which brim with Spanish décor, leaving the country to be an enormous artistic and architectonic heritage site.

Spain is an absolutely beautiful country to explore and no one should miss the chance to discover Islamic history in Spain! So here's a guide to a Muslim-friendly vacation in Spain, listing 11 of the Most Historical Islamic Hot Spots to Visit when planning your next trip to Spain:

1. Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo

Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo

Influenced by the French Gothic style of the 13th century , The Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo is a Roman Catholic Church in Toledo, Spain.

Before it was a cathedral, the main mosque of the city of Toledo was erected in its location. However, you can still see the remnant of the minaret that the muezzin made use of for the call to prayer back in the days.

Some historians point out that the prayer hall of the mosque matches with the design of the five naves of the existing cathedral ; the Sahn would correspond with a division of the existing cloister and the chapel of Saint Peter and the minaret with the bell tower.

The marble shafts that deck the outer sector of the choir is a revamped version of an old Muslim edifice, and the entwined arches of caliphate fashion in the triforium of the key chapel and of the ambulatory coincide with the Muslim structure custom of Cordoba .

Getting There

To get to Toledo and to this spot your best bet would be to catch the AVE fast train from Madrid which will take you 30 minutes while a bus or a car will take you 1 hour .

Address:  Calle Cardenal Cisneros, 1, 45002 Toledo, Spain Museum Opening Hours:  10AM to 6.30PM (Mon-Sat)                                         2PM to 6.30PM (Sun & Designated Days)                                         Closed on Jan 1, Dec 25 & Days of Celebration                                          (Refer  here  for more info on Opening Hours) Museum  Ticket Price:  € 12.50 (Complete Tour)                                    € 10 (Museums)                                     (Refer  here  for more info on Ticket Prices) Contact:  (+34) 925 22 22 41 Website:   www.catedralprimada.es

2. Madinat al Zahra

Placed on the western outskirts of Córdoba, Spain , Madinat al Zahra also known as Medina Azahara, and the "the shining city" is the remains of a huge, fortified Moorish palace-city constructed by Abd-ar-Rahman III .

Built on acres and acres of land, a striking part of Madinat al-Zahra is without doubt Abd al-Rahman III's Hall where tourists enter subsequently, after passing all the way through a terrace that dominates the remains of the mosque. Being a setting for rare occasions, the beautification of this hall is of showy luxury.

People visiting will be able to view quite a few remarkable places such as the Edificio Basilical Superior , which was used as offices for many state officials as well as Casa de Yafar , the residence of the Caliph's prime minister.

The tourism office currently schedules a bus to leave at 10.15AM or 5PM for €7 . Do keep in mind that there are no local buses traveling to the Madinat, but you can take a taxi to the location and then request the museum staff to hail a taxi for you when you need to head back to Cordoba city center.

If you happen to be traveling by car, there are sufficient parking lots available. The visitors' center is positioned at the bottom of the hill and there will be regular shuttle buses that will transport you to the entrance .

Taking a taxi from central Cordoba would cost you about €14 each way . A bus will have to be taken from the museum grounds to the actual archaeological ruins, which costs €2.10 for the return journey . The Madinat itself entails a lot of walking , first downhill then back uphill, so it would be challenging for someone who might have mobility problems.

3. Cordoba Mosque at Mezquita

Built in the 16th century, The Great Mosque of Cordoba is acknowledged for its architecture which symbolizes Muslims' influence and control in the West back in the years.

Initially, Abd al-Rahman purchased half of the Cathedral to enable the Muslim community to perform their prayers. Subsequently, he then obtained the other half to build a new mosque . Later, a cathedral was built right in the middle of the mosque , hence the name ‘Mezquita-Catedral' .

Upon arrival at the Cordoba Mosque tourists witness the many distinct and bold arches, known as the horseshoe arch , which was the first Muslim arch adaptation used in the Umayyad Great Mosque of Damascus.

The building is most known for its arcaded hypostyle hall , with 856 columns of jasper, onyx, marble, granite, and porphyry . The construction is viewed as one of the most skilled monuments of Moorish architecture.

The Great Mosque of Córdoba held a place of importance amongst the Islamic community for three centuries. It served as a significant Prayer hall for one's own devotion.

If you ever plan on visiting the mosque, an ideal timing would be during the morning hours as it tends to get crowded with tourists and worshipers from 11AM to 3PM.

Cordoba has a distance of 400 km from Madrid with a traveling time of about 1hr and 45 minutes via the AVE train. Cordoba's modern train station is located in Avenida de America , at the northern end of the central district . To get to the old town and the Mezquita, you can hop on a taxi (about €6 ) or just walk the 25-minute distance (head along Avenida de America and turn right on to Avenida del Gran Capitan ).

A royal palace in Seville , Spain, Alcazar was built for the Christian King Peter of Castile back in 913 by Castilian Christians on the position of an Abbadid Muslim residential fortress which was ruined after the Christian invasion of Seville. The higher levels of the Alcázar are still lived in by the royal family. It is the oldest royal palace still made use of in Europe, and was registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The highlight of the castle is its intricate carvings inscribed into the stonewalls and the lush gardens with fruit trees, horticultural produce and a broad selection of aromatic flowers. The garden orchards not only provided food for the palace residents but had the artistic function of bringing delight to the eyes. Water was ever in attendance in the form of jets, irrigation channels, pools, runnels, and ponds.

Tourists that are tired of wandering around the palace are given the option of partaking in activities and events held there which are planned by the Royal Alcazar Board of Patronage and the Town Hall.

The tram or also known as the 'tranvia' goes south from Plaza Nueva (the center of the city) and has four stops , covering an overall distance of 1.4km . After departing from Plaza Nueva, it goes down Avenida de la Constitucion passing the Cathedral, stopping at the Archivo de Indias (next to Alcazar Palace), San Fernando (where Puerta Jerez Metro station is), the Prado de San Sebastian (Metro station), and lastly stops at San Bernardo train station (Metro station), where you can catch a Cercanias train . It operates from 6AM to 1.30AM .

You can purchase a ticket for €1.20 at any station. A more cost-effective selection is the combined bus/tram rechargeable pass , Tarjeta Multiuso.

5. Castillo Arabe

Stated a National Monument in 1931 and positioned on the "Cerro de las Torres" , Castillo Arab was built by the Arabs dating back to the Phoenician and Roman period. It is an enclosed space with a pointed horseshoe arch.

Situated at the bottom of the hill, what was left over fort was intensely protected by Muslims according to history. According to legend, there are tales where historians speak of how Emir Muhammad IX locked up his daughters in the fort.

To receive full benefit of the monument, do visit the ancient Muslim Bridge before mountaineering up the Castillo Arabe to realize the valor of Muslims defensive schemes along with appreciating the breath-taking view as you walk the ruins of this fort and ponder over the history of the Castillo Arabe, which dated back from the 12th century onwards.

Malaga is well-known for their Bike Taxis (Trixis) . Trixis is a quick way to see Malaga City. You are entirely covered , so a bike taxi is decent for an all-weather travel option as well as a transport system to this location which happens to be in Malaga as well. Prices are set at €9 per person, but they differ according to how far you go and which company you book it through .

6. Alhambra Palace

Located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain, The Alhambra or also known as "a pearl set in emeralds" is a palace and fortress and is deemed as one of Spain's chief tourist attractions, portraying the country's most noteworthy and well-known Islamic architecture .

It was initially constructed as a small fortress in AD 889 on the remnants of Roman fortifications and rebuilt in the mid-13th century by the Nasrid emir Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar of the Emirate of Granada. It was transformed into a royal fort in 1333 by Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada. The castle was set as a military fortress due to its tactical position , overlooking the complete city.

The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the muse for several songs and stories.

The adornment consists of Arabic inscriptions that are emblazoned into geometrical molds. Tile mosaics with intricate mathematical patterns are principally used as paneling for the lower part.

Apart from its historical reference, there are a vast amount of different sites to see – ranging from the Alcazaba and the palaces, the Hall of the Boat, the building of the Baths, Patio of the Lions, to the Comares Room and the Justice Gate.

Pro Tip: Due to the overcrowding of tourists for the period of the peak summer season , it would be advisable to book the tours and tickets beforehand to avoid disappointment. Ideally, it would be best to visit during winter to steer clear of the crowds.

Don't forget to beat the hydration with a bottle of water for your travels! Do bear in mind that you must clearly state to your ticket vendor as to what time you favor to go on your tour . Punctuality is a must as late arrival will not be tolerated.

You can take the red minibus Alhambra Bus C3 , which departs every 10 minutes from the Plaza Nueva to the Alhambra. The stop where you need to watch out for is called 'Generalife'.

A ticket is €1.20 and can be bought directly on the bus itself. If you plan to stay in Granada for a few extra days and will be traveling by bus seven or more times , it would be a wise option to invest in a Travel Card called Bonobos , which will make your traveling expenses more economical.

From the hub of Granada, a taxi would cost around €6 to €8 . From the bus station in Granada, it would be approximately €10 to €12

The cars are not permitted to come into the Alhambra but there is  parking next to the monument.  The fee is approximately €2.50/hour.

7. The Viana Palace

Fan of architecture and interior designing? The Viana Palace should be your next go-to spot!

Constructed in the 15th century and home to Marquiasate of Villasica , this noble home, will enable tourists to gain first hand knowledge and experience of what a traditional home of aristocrats looks like.

The interior being exquisite and unlike anything other, radiates how life was back in the day, allowing you to feel like you have transported yourself back in time!

Another plus point would be that this spot is not always brimming with tourists compared to the other landmarks around Spain, so it is more convenient to navigate yourself more peacefully.

It has a library with more than seven thousand volumes and collections of Flemish and Goyesque tapestries; silverware Cordoba; carpets; 17th-century furniture; porcelain etc.

One of its grand attractions is its 12 good-looking courtyards, all connected as one, decorated with a vast variety of flora.

Along with being one of the cheapest options, the bus is the preferred mode of transport by most people in Córdoba and to this spot. The price of a ticket is €1.30 (one-way) but if you need to travel by bus often, I suggest you buy a Bonobús pass in order to save money.

Being a former mosque in Toledo, Spain, Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz existed in the city in the Moorish period. The construction was then known as Mezquita Bab-al-Mardum , deriving its name from the city gate Bab al-Mardum. Having dated back from the 10th century, it's a standard Moorish monumen t to stand still till today.

Keep a watch out for the Arabic writings on the south-west end that showcases the history of how the mosque changed over time. The antique building is an interesting mix of cultures. The pillars and horseshoe arches outline nine different sections , each contributing intricate geometrical designs.

A train and bus station is within a 2km radius of the Mosque . Tourists can even get a rental car on hire or a taxi for those travelling from Madrid to Toledo.

The bus , which is more cost effective than the train, has a cost of about 5 Euros each way and takes an hour and a half to go between Madrid and Toledo. Buses depart every half an hour from Plaza Eliptica to the south of Madrid .

By Train: Toledo ave Station

The high-speed train from Madrid to Toledo takes off from Atocha, Madrid's major train station. Trains depart each hour or half hour in the morning and every hour in the evening, requiring you to utilize only a maximum of thirty minutes.

9. Cathedral of Seville - Santa Maria de la Sede Cathedral

Having an area of 11,520 m² , The Cathedral of Seville , or more publicly known as Santa Maria de la Sede Cathedral was and still is one of the largest gothic cathedrals in the world.

It was the principal city of the Umayyad Caliphate from the 8th to the 13th centuries until when Seville was captured by the Christians in the 12th century, they decided to utilize the mosque as a church.

The construction workers conserved a few features from the antique mosque such as the mosque's sahn, which is, the quad for ablutions that is recognized today as the Patio de los Naranjos . It consists of a fountain and orange trees. Not forgetting the most well-known Minaret, which was changed into a bell tower named as La Giralda.

Cathedral Organ

The inside has the longest nave of any cathedral in Spain. The innermost nave ascends to a height of 42 meters. In the heart of the cathedral, the most evident features are the grand boxlike choir loft , which takes up the mid segment of the nave and the vast Gothic retablo of engraved scenes from the life of Christ . This altarpiece was the work of Pierre Dancart, a craftsman who accomplished this masterpiece single-handedly.

Considering how tourists have so much foot action to put into if they wish to cover the vast area, it would be advisable to carry along some snacks as well as water to stay hydrated (Don't forget those comfortable shoes! Slippers and sandals would be a definite no-no)

You can get to the Cathedral of Seville (Catedral de Sevilla) by Bus, Metro or Train . Following are the lines and routes that have stops nearby.

10. Calahorra Tower

Deriving from the Islamic origin, The Calahorra Tower is a gate in the historic center of Córdoba, Spain. Initially built by the Moors and afterward re-instated by King Enrique II in 1369, an additional tower was added to the gate to unite the older two.

Tourists can witness the renowned tale of the Christians, Muslims, and Jews living in good-natured tranquillity at the time of the reign during the adventure through the tower.

The monumental treasure placed right now was formerly used as a defense boundary from attacks. It was then transformed to a prison and a girls' school.

The museum conserves artifacts that display the livelihoods of three different religions in the form of documents and pictures , enabling tourists to peek a glance into lifestyles of that era.

Tourists have the option of utilizing the railway method, via Cordoba Railway Station, or the bus via Estación de autobuses interurbanos de córdoba for traveling purposes which is within a 2 km radius of the attraction.

11. La Madraza Granada

Founded in 1349 by the Nasrid monarch Yusuf I , Sultan of Granada , The Madrasah of Granada is a mosque/school in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. The subjects taught were theology, law medicine, astronomy, logic, mathematics, geometry, and mechanics.

The building was impressive like the other works of Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada, with a white marble access, the remains which are now displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Granada.

The façade of the 18th-century building was bedecked with inscriptions of poetry and philosophy . The mihrab derives from the 14th century.

The construction, which is under the ownership to the University of Granada, underwent a widespread of archeological excavations in 2006–2007 later on re-opening to the public in 2011.

As a substitute to the AVE, there are also inexpensive RENFE trains, such us the Lanzaderas to Seville and Malaga (for around €15 to €20) or the Altaria and the Alivia trains heading to Granada ( 2 hours 30 minutes ) and Madrid ( 2 hours 30 minutes ). You can refer to the Renfe for schedules, prices, and tickets.

If you are heading to this spot from a far-off location in Spain you can arrive by air. Granada has an airport positioned 12km west of the city. Frequent buses travel from Seville, Málaga, Madrid, and Cordoba as well.

The bus station is placed about 2 miles from the city center. It takes not more than 10 minutes by bus (local bus SN1, €1.20 one way), or 30 min if you choose walking to get to the train station.

Driving in Granada is an absolute nightmare that is best avoided at all costs. The central district is chaos due to its narrow, one-way streets and is restricted to buses, taxis, and scooters.

Address: Espacio V Centenario, Avda. Madrid, s / n, 18071 Granada - Spain Opening Hours: 10.30AM to 1PM (Mon-Sun) Website: lamadraza.ugr.es

  • Churreria Desi - Acera del Darro and Calle Palencia 20, Zaidin
  • Halal Tapas - Om Khalsoum on Calle Jardines

Some overall guidelines to follow:

During the months of June-August, summer hits Spain, attracting crowds of tourists into the country. It's best not to go during these months due to the scorching climate and the inflationary accommodation prices and tour dates.

If you choose summer for your travels in Spain then it would be time to pull out those light and airy cott on clothes along with a couple of loose jeans and a good pair of shoes as you will have a lot of walking to do!

The ideal time to visit would be during the months of spring and autumn, March-April/October-November, as the mild weather is easier to deal with (let's not forget the lesser crowds too!)

Due to the months of winter (November – February) being off-season months,  many of the tours and sites close operations.

If you do plan to visit during these months it would be ideal to check availability beforehand. In the case of clothing, due to obvious reasons jackets, raincoats, shoes and plenty of warm clothing is a must, unless you happen to be a fan of frostbite.

Muslim Spain Itinerary

Wonders of Al-Andalus

A group of friends from Bolton UK decided to make a trip to Islamic Spain and discover Al-Andalus. This trip took place in Feb 2020. (The information/prices were what we found during our trip. Please note there may have been changes due to COVID19.) We found the trip to be amazing and felt it went very smooth. Upon returning, a few friends requested a write up of what we did and where we stayed. Hence, this site was prepared. (Download a PDF version of the text here )

01 Introduction

Why visit Al-Andalus? Spain was ruled by Muslims for nearly 800 years. During this period the Muslims were the intellectual superpowers of the world, excelling in all fields, whilst Europe was in its ‘Dark Ages’. Each city in Muslim Spain was full of glamour, religion, education and sophisticated Muslim culture. Unfortunately, the decline of Al-Andalus happened in 1492. Today, we have been left with the breathtaking works of architecture. Visiting Muslim Spain will make you realise the status that Muslims once had, and will create a little sadness of how we, as an ummah, have declined. We pray that all Muslims turn to their creator and that he shows us the days of glory once again.

Note: We are not experts, but we did spend a lot of time in planning the trip, so hopefully this will help. Effort had been made for the information to be up to date, but to be safe, we would recommend you research details yourself too. Our group consisted of young adults and we did not mind touring and travelling to many places in short amounts of time. However, if there are older people or those who like to tour each place slowly, then they should spread out their trip and stay a few days extra. We enjoyed it a lot and felt it was enough. Flights: Book the flights as early as possible. The airport you should be looking for is Malaga, on the south coast of Spain. RyanAir normally has the cheapest flights. We booked our tickets from Manchester approximately 3 and a half months earlier and it cost us £50 each. If you are a family, you may consider parking your car at a long-stay car park at the airport, as it may be cheaper than a taxi there and back. (Note: with RyanAir, a 40x20x25cm cabin bag can be taken for free, and a hand luggage/suitcase can be taken at an additional charge) Travelling around Spain: We would most definitely recommend hiring a car. It makes life much easier and gives the comfort of leaving/arriving at your own times. The tour of Al-Andalus can be made via public transport too. There are train services that connect each of the main cities and bus services within them. Please research the details yourselves before going.

Car hire: We used MalagaCar.com which was very cheap and efficient. We would 100% recommend this website. Malagacar.com is a local company which means it is cheaper than the famous worldwide firms. It would be strongly advised that you select the 'full package'. This will give you peace of mind. No deposit, no worry about scratches and marks (just drop the car off, no checks at all) and a free additional driver. You will have to book online but pay via debit/credit card on the day. The car hire cost us only €90 for 4/5 days. (Try to message them on Facebook and ask for a discount code). Please read all the details on their website. If you do book with Malagacar.com, do NOT go downstairs to the car hire area at the airport. Instead, head for the normal exit and you’ll see a staff member holding a Malagacar.com sign. They will inform you to exit via the sliding doors, turn right, pass the waiting taxis and head through the ‘tunnel'/under the motorway bridge till the end where you will see the Malagacar.com shuttle bus. Alternatively, once exiting the airport, you can follow the ‘shuttle bus’ signs. Driving : In Spain, cars are left-hand drive. If it’s your first time, you are bound to be nervous. The best advice we could give is that you must be mentally aware at all time and always remember you’re on the opposite side. In this scenario, it's best to have someone sit next to you who will be awake and remind you. Spanish motorways are normally empty and have very less traffic. Another few tips are: be aware that in many parts of the motorway, there is no slip road. So, if you’re joining the motorway, be ready to put your foot down when it's free, and if you’re already on, then be aware of cars joining on your right. Also, you’ll be going anti-clockwise on the roundabout. The rules are a little different there, but the best advice would be to stay on the outer lane whenever you can. There aren’t many speed cameras on the motorways, and where there is a camera it’s marked with the sign (the sign looks like a Wi-Fi symbol). Lastly, when in the towns, be mindful of mini-roundabouts. They pop out of nowhere. Information book: Islamic Spain is best enjoyed once a visitor reads up on the history of each place. (We would read the history of each city whilst driving there). One source of information we found extremely helpful was ‘ Huma’s travel guide to Islamic Spain ’. This book includes a detailed history of Islamic Spain, the history of each city and each site, practical travel information, where to stay, visit, eat, shop and much more. It also includes ‘ Fiqh of travelling ' section written by Mufti AbdurRahman Mangera. (Link: Humas-Travel-Guide-To-IslamicSpain ) Food: In the major cities, there are Turkish/Moroccan restaurants that you can go for food. We took some food from home which last us for a couple of days. For breakfast, we would find a café close by, then have snacks throughout the day and dine at one of the halal restaurants in the evening. We would recommend you to do your own research and ask the restaurant staff for clarification before eating. Also, there are halal food places mentioned in ‘Huma’s travel guide to Islamic Spain’.

The city was under Muslim rule from the year 711 to 1236. In its Islamic prime, Cordoba (Qurtuba) was the largest city in Europe, with half a million population, 50 hospitals and many libraries and Masaajid.

What to see:

Mezquita Cathedral ( link ) –

Calle Cardenal Herrero, 1, 14003 Córdoba, Spain

The Masjid (Mezquita) was built in 785 and remained the grandest Masjid of Spain for over 450 years until it was unfortunately converted into a church.

General tickets are €11 after 9:30 till closing time of 6pm.

Entry is free from Monday to Saturday from 8:30am-9:30am except on public holidays/celebrations.

Medina Azahara –

Ctra. Palma del Río, 4P, 14005 Córdoba, Spain

Medina Azahara is the ruins of a vast, fortified Andalus palace-city built by Abd-ar-Rahman III, the first Umayyad Caliph of Córdoba, and located on the western outskirts of Córdoba, Spain. It was the de facto capital of al-Andalus as the heart of the administration and government was within its walls. The living complex was so big and vast that it was regarded as a city itself. Only ruins now remain.

Check opening and closing times before you go as it differs depending on the month. Please note, it is closed on Mondays.

The tickets are free for EU and €1.50 for non EU.

Visitors park their cars at the museum and take a shuttle bus to the site which is €2.50. The shuttle bus will also take you back to the car park.

(Note: the satnav may take you to the entrance of the site, however, visitors can not park there. You will have to park at the museum car park and take the shuttle bus. Please put in Medina Azahara Visitor Centre in your satnav. You will see the car park entrance at the roundabout once you get very close.)

Roman Bridge –

Across Guadalquivir river, Cordoba, Spain

The bridge was built by the Romans in the early 1st century BC. During the early Islamic domination, the Muslim governor Al-Samh ibn Malik al-Khawlani ordered a bridge to be built on the ruins of what was left of the old Roman construction.

Great views back to the old town, of the water wheel and old mill building ruins in/on the river, and the fortress at the south end.

There are no closing times and no tickets are needed.

Where to stay:

Euro Star Maimonides Hotel  ( link )

Calle Torrijos, 4, 14003 Córdoba, Spain

This 3* hotel located directly in front of the Mezquita. We would definitely recommend this hotel as it situated in the prime location. The rooms were clean, and it has fantastic views of the mezquita (if you’re lucky enough to get one of these rooms). The link above is to their own website, however we booked using their HalalBooking.com link .

An additional advantage of this hotel is that it has its own underground parking. There is a location on their website which if put in the GPS help you find the hotel. (Note: When there is 2/3mins left on the satnav, it will take you to a road with a no entry sign and some Spanish writing underneath. Just drive through it and go to the hotel and give your registration plate in. The no-entry does not apply to taxis and those who are parking at this hotel). The parking at the hotel costs 15 euros a day.

We stayed at this hotel and found it to be perfect (besides the thin walls that wouldn’t block all the sound). The twin rooms we got cost around £20 per person per night. If you do consider other hotels, we would recommend this area of Cordoba and advise you enquire about car parking beforehand.

What we did: Day 1 - Thursday 20th Feb 2020

We departed from Manchester Airport on the 7:25am Ryanair flight and arrived into Malaga Airport at 12:45pm. The journey takes two hours 50 minutes, the time difference is one hour. However, there was a 1hr 20mins delay due to the French airstrikes. After landing, we headed straight to the arrivals where a shuttle bus took us to the car hire.

Once we collected the cars, we headed directly to Madina az Zahara. Depending on your schedule, you could tour Madina Azahara on your way into Cordoba or out. Medina Az zahara is on the outskirts of Cordoba and is a 1 hour 50 mins drive from Malaga. We arrived just in time for the last shuttle bus up to the site, because of which we missed the short museum tour and guided talk before. Visitors normally spend an hour at Madina az Zahara. After finishing from Madina Az zahara, we checked in to our hotel in Cordoba which was 15 minutes drive.

At sunset, we roamed the narrow streets and reached the Roman Bridge for a great view. Across the bridge and taking a right there is a ‘Masjid atTawheed’ where we prayed our Magrib salah. (There is also a smaller masjid called ‘Mosque of Al-Andalus’ which is a few minutes walk from the Mezquita).

muslim spain tour

Seville was the first and last capital of Islamic Spain and was the richest city in Al-Andalus.

El Real Alcázar (Royal Palace)  ( link )

Patio de Banderas, s/n, 41004 Sevilla, Spain

It was built under the order of Abdur Rahman II in 913 as a military base. Once the Christians conquered Seville, their king ordered a place to be built on the site and has Muslim craftsmen construct it. These craftsmen secretly carved in the Andalusian motto 'و لا غالب إلا الله' (There is no over-powering Being besides Allah) all around the place without the king realising.

  • T ickets can be purchased on-site at the Real Alcazar, but queues are often long. There is a separate queue for those have online booking, however, you will have to select a time and enter during the stated time slot. (We didn’t book online, and had to wait 20 minutes). Depending on the length of the queue, you may consider buying tickets on your mobile phone.

Basic general admission tickets are €11.50 (€3 for students 17 to 25) Any advance purchase ticket adds a €1 ‘online’ surcharge. Admission is free on Monday during the final hour of the day. This can also be booked online in advance and you’ll have to pay the €1 online fee.

La Giralda ( link )

Av. de la Constitución, s/n, 41004 Sevilla, Spain

La Giralda is the minaret of the Masjid on which a Cathedral was built. The minaret is still standing and is unfortunately used a bell tower today. The tower does not have steps, rather 35 inclined platforms which would allow the Muazzin to climb it on horseback to call out the Azaan.

Visiting the La Giralda tower is part of visiting the Cathedral. Tickets will include the Cathedral, El Salvador church and the tower. You will walk through the Cathedral and head towards the tower.

Monday, from 11:00am to 3:30pm. (from 4:30pm to 6:00pm, free tour with audio guide, with advance booking in Spanish and English).

Tuesday to Saturday, from 11:00am to 5:00pm. Sunday, from 2:30pm to 6:00pm.

Price: General admission: €9 (includes a visit to the main Cathedral, El Salvador church and the La Giralda tower.)

Where to park:

We toured Seville as a day trip, so didn’t need a hotel to stay. If you do plan on something similar, we’d advise parking your car where we did. Most of the places to see are within 15 minutes walk from here and prices are ok. Cost us approximately €6 for 3hrs. The underground car park is called ‘Parking Avenida de Roma’ and the address is Paseo de Roma, 41013 Sevilla .

What we did: Day 2 - Friday 21st February

Waking up in the Cordoba hotel, we prayed Fajr early and had breakfast at a cafe. We then headed to the Mezquita at 8:30am for the free entry. We took approximately 45 minutes inside and then went for some souvenir shopping. Thereafter, we went back to the hotel checked out and headed for Seville.

Seville is 1 hour 35 minutes drive from Cordoba.

Once we reached Seville, we parked the car at the car park mentioned above which is right in the middle of the places to see. First, we headed to the Real Alcazar and had to wait in the queue. We decided not to buy tickets in advance due to not know what time we would visit. It isn’t very busy in February, so the wait was not too long. We toured the beautiful palace and the amazing gardens.

After finishing, we followed the Giralda tower we could see in the distance and reached the Cathedral entrance. After purchasing the tickets, we entered the building. The Cathedral is huge with many Christian statues and pictures. Since we weren’t interested in this, we walked straight through to the La Giralda tower. The walk up was a trek and elders would be recommended to take their time with regular stops. At the top, you can see the church bell and enjoy the amazing panoramic views of Seville city centre.

Instead of visiting the Plaza Espana, we decided to set off for Granada early, with the hope of being able to add Marbella into our schedule the next day. The drive from Seville to Granada was 3hrs and we reached perfectly on time for sunset. After checking in at the hotel (details given in Granada section), we set out on foot for some food and to the Granada old town to get a night view of Alhambra. After enjoying the views, we went to the hotel for the night.

Granada was the last major city of Al-Andalus and would be the home to all the Muslims fleeing from the Christian conquests of Reconquista. During this time, it was the only Muslim-controlled region and only Arabic was spoken here. Granada has the best-preserved monument built by the Muslims.

Alhambra palace ( link )

Calle Real de la Alhambra, s/n, 18009 Granada, Spain

A grand collection of palaces and gardens. It was built under the order of the sultan who was named Al-Ahmar ('the Red'- due to his red hair). The Alhambra palace combines a breath-taking blend of human artistry with natural beauty.

There are 4 mains sections to Alhambra. Alcazaba (fortress), the Palace of Carlos V (with museums), the Generalife (gardens) and finally the amazing Nazrid Palaces.

Nasrid Palace

Within the Alhambra, there are the Nasrid Palace rooms. This complex is a combination of palaces, patios and gardens built to dazzle the viewers by its beauty. Each room here contains spectacular decorations, arches, domes and stunning craftsmanship. There are about 10,000 Arabic inscriptions, of which 1000 are Quranic verses. Throughout the palace, the phrase و لا غالب إلا الله (there is no Overpowering Being besides Allah) is echoed over every wall.

You need a ticket to visit the Alhambra and Generalife Gardens. Please pre-book as soon as possible as people book 2 to 3 months in advance. (The number of admissions per day and hour is limited to protect the monument, and tickets usually sell out before the day.) Each ticket has an allocated entry time for the Nasrid Palaces and can only be visited at that time. If you miss it, you won’t be allowed in to see this stunning complex of buildings. The Nasrid palace can be up to 30mins walk from some entrances of the Alhambra, so please be wary of timings.

'Individual Tickets' cost 14.00€ (plus 1.40€ if paying by card) per adult from the Alhambra ticket office.

oThe general visiting hours for the Alhambra are as follows:

15 Mar to 14 Oct: Morning session: 8:30-14:00, Afternoon session: 14:00-20:00, Night session: (Tue to Sat) 22.00-23.30.

15 Oct to 14 Mar: Morning session: 8:30-14:00 hrs, Afternoon session: 14:00- 18:00, Night session: (Fri and Sat) 20.00-21.30.

Albaicin/Albayzin

Is the old Muslim area with narrow street and lots of shops and restaurants. A good way of viewing it is to put the Masjid as your destination, allowing you to enjoy the walk through Albayzin.

Mirador de San Nicolas

Calle Espaldas a San Nicolas s/n, 18009 Granada, Spain

This is situated very close to the Masjid in Granada. It is a popular place to get an amazing evening/night view of the Alhambra.

Grand Mosque of Granada

Plaza de San Nicolás, s/n, 18010 Granada, Spain

(Note: driving in the Granada city centre is not permitted between 07:30 and 22:30.)

There are two options for where to stay in Granada. The first is to stay in the city centre. This will be ideal for when you go shopping for souvenirs, food, dessert and will be in a generally livelier place. However, car parking may be a problem. The second option is to stay close to the Alhambra Palace, as we did. It will obviously be closer to Granada’s main attraction and will be easier to access via car. Also, you could park the car in the Alhambra car park (€19 a day). However, it will be a long (20mins) walk to the city centre, or a 5/10 mins taxi ride (€5-€7).

We took the second option and stayed at:

Hotel Alixares ( link )

Paseo de la Sabica, 40, 18009 Granada, Spain

This 4* hotel is situated around 8 minutes from the Alhambra. We used their Booking.com link . The rooms were lovely and it was a pleasant stay. Once we parked up, the chauffeur took our keys and parked the cars in their car park. Parking cost €19 per day. The car park is small, but if it's full they recommend the Alhambra car park, which costs the same. The hotel was approximately 20 minutes walk from the city centre.

What we did : Day 3 - Saturday 22nd February

Once again, we woke up early for the buffet breakfast at the hotel which cost €11. We did consider other cafes, but it was a long walk and we had to reach Alhambra early. We had purchased the Alhambra tickets well in advance and chose the entry time of 9am. This meant we would go straight to the Nasrid Palaces. After checking the tickets, we were let into the rooms. The rooms are breath-taking with the Arabic inscription all around will stun the viewer. There are many rooms and small gardens with fountains. You can just imagine how this was the pinnacle of worldly pleasures for the Muslims rulers of the time. After the rooms, the visitors are led towards the gardens. We spent a little time there and then headed for Palace of Carlos V. This is a circular building with an open courtyard in the middle. After spending 20 minutes there, we headed for the last of the attractions, the Alcazaba fortress. We climbed on to the roof of this castle-like building and enjoyed the 360-degree views of the Granada city and the amazing mountains behind it.

Once we finished, we returned to the hotel for around 11:30 and got ready for the 12:00 checkout. Once checking out, we asked reception if we could collect the cars later. We were told that the roads will be close from 3-5pm for that day only due to a cycling event. So, headed out on foot to the city centre with a plan of a 2pm return. We went to a baklava shop called ‘Natura Morisca' (Calle Calderería Vieja, 12, 18010 Granada). The shop owned by the very friendly brother called Abdul Fattah has the most delicious baklava in various flavours. However, we did find it to be a little expensive. Once we purchased some to take home, we went to a restaurant for lunch and then returned to collect our cars.

We then set off for the south coast and beach area around the Malaga province. It was a 2.5hrs drive and we first went to the Marbella area. We went directly to the beautiful King Abdul Aziz masjid, pray Zuhr and Asr. We then went to the beach and concluded the day with some food and a drive to our hired villa near Fuengirola.

05 Other Islamic Places

There are other places in the Al-Andalus area which have significant Islamic history we, unfortunately, could not visit them due to time. However, if you have the time, be sure to go.

Gibraltar – The name is derived from جبل طارق (Jabal Ṭāriq), literally meaning Mount of Tariq and is named after the 8th century Moorish military leader Tariq ibn Ziyad. He was the man who first crossed the narrow sea from Morocco and started the conquest of Spain. Gibraltar is 2hr drive from Malaga.

Alpujarras mountain village – is the area which was where the last Muslims of Al-Andalus fled. These villages are spread around the snowy mountain and approx 2hrs drive from Granada.

Ronda – a historic Islamic city which was one of the longest-held Muslim strongholds in Al-Andalus. Its a city that is surrounded by green hills and mountains and has amazing bridges which arc over the river. Ronda is approximately 1.5hrs drive from Malaga.

Other cities and villages with Islamic history are mentioned in ‘Huma's travel guide’.

06 Costa Del Sol

Once touring the former Islamic cities is done, one can spend a few days on the south coast of Spain and enjoys the sun and the sea. The beaches are beautiful, with many areas having mountains in the horizon on the opposite side.

There are many cities on the east and west of Malaga that you could stay at. We would recommend the west of Malaga. Marbella is a popular destination for many celebrities and rich tourist. The amazing King Abdul Aziz Masjid is also situated in Marbella. Marbella is approximately 1hr from Malaga.

We stayed in the coastal city of Fuengirola. We hired a villa for a couple of days nearby. Places to rent out can be found on Airbnb, booking.com and other similar websites. (We stayed at https://abnb.me/UIPugqUqt4 ). There is a stunning Masjid built in Fuengirola which is 5/10 minutes walk from the beach. Fuengirola also has their famous weekly market where souvenirs, fresh/dried fruit, branded (non-genuine, we think) clothing and much more. The main market is on Tuesdays and a smaller version is held on Sundays (address below).

A few more attractions close by are: Nerja Caves – amazing natural formed caves which will leave you stunned. Benalmadena Cable cars – the cable cars will take you from the beach up to the top of the mountain where the 360 views are amazing. Horse riding – many provide this experience. We booked a 2hr trek on the beach at Benalmadena with David on Airbnb ( https://abnb.me/MLKXqvkrt4 ).

Gang rape of travel blogger in India triggers nationwide outcry

Reports of horrific sexual assaults on women have become familiar in india.

Uniformed men bring three people with bags over their head and ropes around their waist down a hallway.

Social Sharing

WARNING: This article contains graphic content and may affect those who have experienced sexual violence or know someone affected by it.

The woman in the Instagram video appeared shaken. Her face was swollen and bruised. Sitting beside her husband, she began recounting her ordeal.

"Something happened to us that we wouldn't wish on anyone," she said in Spanish, with captions in English. Her husband then said: "We were assaulted in the tent. We were beaten. They put a knife to our necks and she was raped by seven guys."

In the video that has since been deleted, the woman said the assault on her and her Spanish partner — both travel bloggers — took place in a forest late Friday in eastern Jharkhand state's Dumka district in India where they were camping on their way to neighbouring Nepal.

The couple, who had been documenting their trip for more than 200,000 followers on an Instagram account, were found by a police patrol van which took them to a hospital, where the woman told the doctor she had been raped.

Police in Jharkhand confirmed the incident and arrested three men over the weekend. On Monday, police said they were searching for four more suspects.

  • Here's why India's Manipur state has been gripped by months of violence

The Associated Press generally doesn't identify victims of sexual assault.

The case triggered a nationwide outcry over one of India's rampant problems: a decades-long struggle to curb rising sexual violence against women.

Reports of horrific sexual assaults on women have become familiar in India, where police recorded 31,516 rape cases in 2022, a 20 per cent increase from 2021, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.

The real figure is believed to be far higher due to the stigma surrounding sexual violence and victims' lack of faith in police. Women's rights activists say the problem is particularly acute in rural areas, where victims of sexual assault are sometimes shamed by the community and families worry about their social standing.

"Often, the victims are victimized further with insults, and it makes it very difficult for them to report the crime to the police. In such cases, women think it is best to keep quiet," said Mariam Dhawale, a women's rights activist and general secretary of the All India Democratic Women's Association.

Sexual violence in spotlight since 2012

Rape and sexual violence have been under the spotlight since the brutal 2012 gang rape and killing of a 23-year-old student on a New Delhi bus. The attack galvanized massive protests and inspired lawmakers to order the creation of fast-track courts dedicated to rape cases and stiffen penalties.

The woman raises one hand in the air as water spray clouds the entire frame.

The rape law was amended in 2013, criminalizing stalking and voyeurism and lowering the age at which a person can be tried as an adult from 18 to 16.

Despite stringent laws, rights activists say the government is still not doing enough to protect women and punish attackers.

"Often, investigations in rape cases are messed up by the police and timely evidence is not collected. These cases get dragged on without any convictions and the culprits walk free," Dhawale said. She said convictions remain rare and cases often remain stuck for years in India's clogged criminal justice system.

In the last few years, the conviction rate in rape cases has hovered below 30 per cent, according to several government reports.

High-profile rape cases involving foreign visitors have drawn international attention to the issue. In 2022, a British tourist was raped in front of her partner in Goa. Earlier this year, an Indian-American woman said she was raped at a hotel in New Delhi.

Culture of downplaying harassment

In January, the Supreme Court restored life sentences for 11 Hindu men who raped a Muslim woman during deadly religious rioting two decades ago. They had been released in 2022, when they were garlanded with flowers by their families and a lawmaker from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's governing Bharatiya Janata Party.

Last year, female wrestlers demonstrated against the head of the wrestling federation, accusing him of repeatedly groping women. After months of protests, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, an influential lawmaker from Modi's party, was charged in court with stalking, harassment and intimidation. Singh has denied the accusations.

Dhwale said even though high-profile rape cases get media attention, a culture of downplaying sexual harassment and violence against women remains prevalent in India.

"We are continuously on the road to protest, sometimes to get a single case registered. It shouldn't be like that," she said.

For anyone who has been sexually assaulted, there is support available through crisis lines and local support services via this Government of Canada website or the Ending Violence Association of Canada database . If you're in immediate danger or fear for your safety or that of others around you, please call 911.

Foreign tourist is gang-raped in India as violence against women persists

muslim spain tour

NEW DELHI — Police in eastern India say they have arrested three men and are pursuing four others in the gang rape of a Brazilian tourist, a case that has drawn cries of fury and shame from those in Indian society who say sexual violence against women remains a stubbornly endemic problem.

The attack on the Brazilian travel blogger and her Spanish partner took place in a forest late Friday, as the couple were camping while traveling by motorbike across eastern India to Nepal.

Struggling to fight back tears and showing bruises on their faces, the couple said in an Instagram post Saturday morning that seven men held knives against their throats and took turns sexually assaulting the woman while beating and restraining her male partner.

5 years after the gang rape that shocked a nation, reporting assault in India is still ‘a nightmare’

Local police in Jharkhand state said in a news release that they had taken the victims to a nearby hospital and confirmed the outlines of their account. All seven men have been identified and a special investigation team has been set up to arrest the four still at large, police in the Dumka district said.

While cases of rape targeting Indian women from lower castes and Indigenous tribal communities are rife, and often receive little notice and aren’t prosecuted, this incident involving a foreigner — who went public on social media to her more than 200,000 followers — focused national attention to an unusual degree.

National newspapers covered the case, and women’s rights activists, politicians and even Bollywood celebrities weighed in on social media to condemn what they described as an intractable problem despite efforts at cultural and legal reform.

Karanjeet Kaur, a writer who published an op-ed Monday about her outrage over sexual violence against Indian women, said the case sparked so much discussion because the survivor stood out by sharing an experience all too common for Indian women.

“We have become so inured to violence against women that only when the contours of a case are very different does it make a dent in our conscience,” she said in a phone interview. “Otherwise our bodies, our minds, our autonomy does not matter at all.”

Viral video of a sexual assault in India sparks outrage and protest

In December 2012, thousands of Indians took to the streets to protest the gang rape and death of a 22-year-old student, a case that prompted the Indian government to expand the legal definition of rape and introduce the death penalty as a possible sentence for rapists.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi first ran for the office in 2014, women’s safety featured prominently in his outreach to female voters, and nearly a decade later, his administration remains sensitive to any potential political blowback from controversies over crimes against women.

Yet violent crimes against women continue to rise , according to national statistics, and high-profile rape cases continue to surface with alarming regularity, largely as a result of what many say is a culture of downplaying sexual harassment and violence — and of giving impunity to the perpetrators — in a patriarchal society.

Last year, India’s Supreme Court criticized the Gujarat government, led by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), for the early release of 11 men convicted of gang-raping a Muslim woman, Bilkis Bano, during riots in the state in 2002. Upon their release, the convicts had been garlanded with flowers by well-wishers and praised by a BJP lawmaker as good Brahmins, the highest Hindu caste. In January, the Supreme Court canceled their release and ordered them returned to custody .

India’s female wrestlers staged demonstrations starting in January last year against the chair of the wrestling federation, accusing him of repeatedly groping women over the previous decade. But the powerful BJP politician faced no consequences until a court ordered police to investigate the case in April 2023

India’s girl wrestlers watch in dismay as their heroes are crushed by police

The chief of India’s National Commission for Women, Rekha Sharma, was herself accused of downplaying sexual violence soon after the Brazilian blogger’s experience became public.

When an American journalist retweeted the couple’s account of their assault and told of experiences of his own, saying he had never witnessed so much sexual aggression as in India, Sharma took him to task for “defaming” India.
