A GOSPEL-CENTERED PLATFORM FOR LIFE-ON-LIFE DISCIPLESHIP

No more endless scrolling, looking for that “perfect” study. Now you can create a discipleship curriculum that will fit your people well because you tailor it with them in mind.

What’s in The Journey?

Each week, life-on-life discipleship groups are continually engaged with the five elements of TEAMS: Truth, Equipping, Accountability, Mission, and Supplication .

These elements of life change are the foundation of each weekly unit.

God’s Word guides us as the foundational means of growth in discipleship.

As the truth is worked into the participant’s heart, it becomes understandable, meaningful and transformative in their life.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Gospel transformation in community - both encouraging one another towards love and good deeds and lovingly confronting sin in one another’s lives.

Making the gospel known in word and deed where we live, work, and play. Healthy movements of discipleship not only train disciples, but also take Christ’s mission seriously - to seek and save the lost.

SUPPLICATION

Saturating each group, meeting, and person in prayer.

Want a little background on how the original Journey was created?

Our Story And Team

When Leaders Raise Up Other Leaders

We help local churches around the world follow jesus’ model of discipleship..

Perimeter Church Pastor Randy Shares The Story

A Multiplying Movement is Growing

When Perimeter Church Pastor Randy Pope and his wife Carol moved to Atlanta to plant Perimeter Church in 1977, it started with a few small discipleship groups. Discipleship remains the heartbeat of Randy’s personal ministry and Perimeter Church. Randy just finished his 53rd consecutive year of discipling a few men, and through Life on Life Ministries, we are seeing the Perimeter Church discipleship model transform lives and communities not just in Atlanta, but around the world.

The life on life model that propelled Perimeter church discipleship is applicable in every church across the globe. Now, that’s our mission.

The church realized that life-on-life missional discipleship had been at the core of our leadership development, but it was not the culture of the church. It was not a movement. As we began to apply the principles of Jesus’s model of discipleship to shape the culture of discipleship in the church, we saw a new level of spiritual depth develop amongst our people.

Life on Life Ministries was founded out of Perimeter to help other churches follow Jesus’ model of discipleship in their church.

“ Testimonies of marriages and lives being transformed are consistently being heard at our church.

We are a ministry of a local church, designed specifically to help other churches.

Where We Work

WE PARTNER WITH CHURCHES AROUND THE WORLD

We work with local churches around the world to develop Life on Life hubs that can provide training for other churches in their region. This allows us to offer our relational training process outside of Atlanta. We are seeing discipleship movements ignite and hubs develop in Brazil, South Africa, Poland, Singapore, Manilla, Ireland, Australia, the Middle East, and Asia.

Randy Pope

President of Life on Life Ministries

Randy Pope is the founding pastor of Perimeter Church in Johns Creek, Georgia. After 42 years of leading Perimeter Church, in September 2019, he moved into the role of full-time Assistant Pastor of Perimeter Church and President of Life on Life Ministries. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama with a major in math and Reformed Theological Seminary.

His personal passion and commitment is to make and train disciples of Christ. He just finished his 53rd consecutive year discipling a few men. He founded Life on Life Ministries, an organization committed to establishing life-on-life missional discipleship in churches worldwide. In addition to training church leaders throughout the world, he has been a guest lecturer at numerous universities and graduate schools. He has written books specifically for pastors and leaders, The Intentional Church and Insourcing. He has also written a book for singles, Finding Your Million Dollar Mate. He has developed resources used around the world that include: The Journey, a gospel-centered resource for discipleship and Express Your Faith, a relational way to help others investigate Christ. He has also developed resources for those exploring Christianity that include Life Issues and Next Steps booklets.

Randy and Carol have four grown children and fifteen grandchildren.

Bill Wood

Director of Life on Life Ministries

Bill Wood has been on staff at Perimeter Church for 18 years and was involved in the early formation of Life on Life Ministries. He has recently transitioned from Perimeter’s Executive Leadership Team and is now the Director of Life on Life Ministries and Global Outreach. Prior to joining Perimeter Church, Bill held executive-level positions in financial and technology corporations in a career spanning almost 50 years.

He joined the US Air Force at the age of 17 and during his enlistment he heard a clear presentation of the gospel for the first time and his life was transformed. In his new-found faith, he was introduced to discipleship as a few men discipled him. From those early days as a new Christian, he knew he would do for other men, what these men had done for him. That commitment to disciple men has remained from his time at the University of Tennessee and throughout his business career. In his present role, he encourages leaders around the world as they embrace a vision of discipleship for themselves and their churches.

Bill lives in Johns Creek, GA with his wife, Debby. They have three married adult children and four grandsons. When Bill isn’t reading a book, he enjoys walking and working on projects around his home and for his children. His grandsons represent a great opportunity to invest his life in a third generation of family. He and Debby continue to invest their lives in men and women. Bill has taken Psalms 92:12, 14 as his challenge for this stage of his life, to be fruitful, even in old age.

You look back on the mistakes, the challenges, and everything you had to endure—but you also celebrate the fact that you faced your problems head-on. Your journey through life is what makes you human.

7 Steps to Create a Roadmap for Your Life

How to effectively navigate any major life change..

Posted March 30, 2022 | Reviewed by Ekua Hagan

  • The archetype for life is the journey. The roadmap helps chart the trip through change and transition.
  • A roadmap helps a person visualize their life—where they have been and where they want to go.
  • Learning how to navigate change and transition will help one gain control of life's circumstances.

Since the archetype for life is the journey, a roadmap will help you plan your life moving forward much as you would prepare for a trip. Charting your trip tells you where you’ve been so far, where you intend to go, what obstacles you may face, and the places you keep returning to over and over again.

Our journeys are both inner and outer. The events of the outer journey, the cumulative transitions of a lifetime, will be somewhat similar for all of us who share the human experience. Our personal inner journey is a much more private affair. The roadmap is a reliable context within which to place your very own experiences and transitions.

The nature of life is change and all of us will make many changes and go through numerous transitions as we live life. Nothing stays the same and neither do we. So much colors who we are and who we are to become. Knowingly or not, we move into new and different phases that connect us socially and emotionally to others who are going through the same phase.

But beyond the normal changes we will encounter, there will be those changes and transitions we did not expect, did not prepare for, did not want to happen. How do we cope with encounters and transitions that are difficult, challenging, and often overwhelming?

One way is to learn to be prepared for whatever comes your way. How do you do that? Well, experience will be a great teacher. Once something has happened to you, it will no longer be an unknown. You will have learned something from it. But, it’s a lot easier if you have the tools to handle change and transition so you’re not surprised, so you’ll know what to do.

Here are seven essential steps to help you navigate through any change/transition you may encounter during the course of your life.

Have a realistic expectation. Before you embark on your next big change/transition, map your trip as best you can, knowing that things don’t always work out as you plan or hope they will. Know that things can go smoothly, or there may be delays, detours, and roadblocks. Be realistic about the timetable. Again, things may happen quickly or there may be delays, sudden stops, and sometimes re-routing before you reach your destination.

Review what you’ve learned about change . Each of your trips to a new place in your life has hopefully taught you something. It’s these cumulative events and your responses to them that help you navigate whatever happens to you moving forward. What you’ve learned and how to respond will help you make the best possible choices and decisions.

The exception to that, of course, is an event that places you in imminent danger, such as a life-threatening illness, unexpected personal crisis, or natural disaster, where you have no choice but to take immediate action. In that case, once the necessary actions have been taken and the dust finally settles, you can then go back and review, in order to figure out what the change/transition meant and what to do next.

Create a Life Timetable. This timetable should reflect major life transitions. What events did you initiate on your own? In other words, what inner events caused you to make a change? What happenings were foisted upon you by life circumstances? In other words, what events happened to you from the outside; those events you had little control over? What were your “triumphs?" What were your losses? Pay attention to the main emotions for each of these changes/transitions. How did you react to whatever happened to you?

Do you view each major event in your life in a positive light—you got something out of it? Or, do you fear change because you believe the things that have happened to you have impacted you negatively?

Define your Life Themes. This goes well beyond charting the chronological order of events, the basic facts of your life. Themes are generally easily recognizable—they are recurring and repetitive. Positively, life themes help you define who you are and alert you to your purpose and passion. Developing insight into how you process life and what is most important to you can help you gain more personal control so that you can skillfully steer the course in the direction you want to go.

Get in touch with your Life Lessons. We all have them. Each of us has our own unique things to experience and lessons to be learned. Not one size fits all. Our lessons come from every single facet of our lives—our background, family, culture, religion, social group, education . Those influencers help us define who we are from birth. Some of us are fortunate enough to have been given life skills early on so that finding our way through life is made easier, while others struggle to find their way. But there is always the opportunity at any point in life to learn and receive guidance from those around you.

Where you choose to take yourself in life and who you choose to associate with will inevitably influence you greatly. Paying close attention to how you respond to life will help you become acutely aware of the life lessons that await you.

Go beyond limiting beliefs. Do you really know what you believe? We often assume we know what we believe to be true—but that’s often not the case. What we think is true is frequently colored by others’ opinions and influenced by those we admire and trust. As much as they may care about us, they may not always know what’s in our best interest. And too, often the actions we take and the choices and decisions we make are based on ideas and beliefs that no longer serve us, if they ever did. So going beyond limiting beliefs may pave the way for changing how you make transitions moving forward. Push through to beliefs that bolster your confidence and support your endeavors.

Accept the unknown. There’s so much we don’t know as we go through life. With as much planning as we’ll do to ensure our desired outcome, there will always be those times when all the planning in the world will not get us the result we want. Who knows why? But it happens. Consider the unknown your friend in life. When you accept what you can’t control, what you can’t do anything about, it becomes far easier to accept what does come and make it work for you.

As Rilke said so well, “Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”

The Journey of a Lifetime

journey life on life

“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” – Jesus (John 10:10)

Abundant life! I don’t know about you, but I like the sound of that. A life rich in meaning, full of purpose, thick with substance, durable and flourishing—that’s the kind of life I want. It’s the kind of life that deep down we know we were made for. And it’s the kind of life Jesus is offering those who will follow Him.

Jesus is inviting you on the journey of a lifetime to know God, feed your soul, grow in love, and change your world. It’s a spiritual journey of abundant life—the life you and I were made for—and it all starts when we respond to Jesus’ invitation to follow Him. So, what are you waiting for? The journey of a lifetime awaits! Jesus is calling, “Come, follow me!” (Luke 18:22).

The Four Stages

At The Moody Church, the journey of a lifetime follows four stages outlined below.

Know God – Jesus initiates a relationship with His disciples. Jesus came to Earth to make God known, and here Jesus, the Son of God, is reaching out to people like you and me, inviting us to get to know Him, to follow Him. He wants a relationship with us. We were made to come alive in worship of God. Jesus is inviting you to know God through worship.

Feed Your Soul – Following Jesus is a life-transforming journey, and it is not a journey we take alone. Jesus is creating a community of disciples who will together learn how to look to Jesus for the nourishment of their souls. Our souls are starving for truth and life-giving relationships, and Jesus is creating a community of disciples where our souls can be fed. Jesus is inviting you to feed your soul through community.

Grow in Love – Jesus says that if we follow Him, He will make us into a new kind of person. This journey will deeply reform the character of our inner life. Jesus intends to make us like Himself. Jesus came to serve and give Himself away for others. And He invites us to grow in love as we give ourselves away as well. We are most fulfilled when we live for others. Jesus is inviting you to grow in love through service.

Change Your World – Jesus intends that His followers become “fishers of men.” It’s a metaphor, playing on the previous occupation of many of Jesus’ first disciples who were in fact fishermen. Jesus was speaking to their—and our —newfound purpose in life. Jesus is calling us to join Him in His rescue mission of bringing abundant life to the people around us. If you want to really change your world for eternity, there’s no greater opportunity than to join what Jesus is doing to redeem the world and renew people’s lives. Jesus is inviting you to change your world through mission.

The Journey of a Lifetime Sermon Series and Devotional Guide

A Gospel-Centered Resource for Discipleship

The Journey is a proven discipleship curriculum that will help you develop mature and equipped followers of Christ .

The journey is.

The content of The Journey  is based on truths found in the Bible. Each section is rooted in the scriptures and will lead you to study the bible on your own. We believe that a firm understanding and application of the Bible is foundational for every Christian.

The curriculum is built so that you are putting the things that you learn into practice each week. You will develop habits and learn to use tools that will aide in your spiritual walk for years to come. The Journey is also specifically designed so that as you grow you can use it to help others mature as well.

The topics in The Journey are designed to address what is most crucial to the foundational development of a christian. The curriculum is not designed to  simply address knowledge, but to help people take real steps towards applying the Word of God to their lives. As you experience the material The Journey will help you to shape your understanding, motivations, and applications of Biblical truths in many areas of life.

The Journey is structured to give you the necessary tools and skills to effectively share the gospel with others. Throughout the course of study you will have the opportunity to take baby steps towards effectively communicating the gospel with the lost where you live, work, and play.

What is The Journey?

The Journey is a Gospel centered resource for discipleship that is designed to help a disciple maker develop mature and equipped followers of Christ, who will be able to do the same with others.

The material is designed to be used over one year in a discipleship group setting. There are three different years of material identified as Green, Red, and Blue. With a subscription to one year of the curriculum you will have access to a downloadable PDF and other digital resources for one year.

The digital files include a mixed media offering of written, audio, and video materials.

What topics are covered in The Journey?

The topics covered in The Journey have been selected because of their foundational importance in developing a mature and equipped follower of Christ. View an overview of the three years of curriculum here.

How do I get the most out of The Journey?

The Journey was written in a way that requires group members to study each lesson outside of the group time before attending the group. During the group, leaders do not simply go through each question, but they seek to draw out what God has been doing in the lives of the group members as they’ve studied on their own. Remember, the Journey is not discipleship, but it is an incredible tool for life-on-life missional discipleship. The author’s video below will explain in greater detail.

What is life-on-life missional discipleship?

Life-on-life missional discipleship is laboring in the lives of a few with the intention of imparting one’s life, God’s Word and the gospel in such a way as to see them become mature and equipped followers of Christ, committed to doing the same in the lives of others.

How is The Journey structured?

Each weekly unit is structured in a T.E.A.M.S. format, incorporating each of the following elements.  T.E.A.M.S. stands for T ruth, E quipping, A ccountability, M ission and S upplication.

  • T ruth – This is the Bible.  God’s word is the foundation for each unit.
  • E quipping – Massaging the truth until it becomes understandable and useable.
  • A ccountability – Involves the “one anothering” of Scripture.  Both “encouraging one another towards love and good deeds” as well as lovingly confronting sin in one anothers lives to bring about gospel-motivated transformation.
  • M ission – Taking on the mission of Jesus to seek and to save the lost in ministries of both word and deed, explaining the gospel and meeting people’s needs.
  • S upplication – Praying for each other and with each other; learning how and why we praying while also experiencing the impact of prayer in the world and in our lives.

What is included when I purchase one year of The Journey?

  • Digital Download of 28 weekly units each following the T.E.A.M.S. structure.
  • Additional messages and materials that will help to address specific issues more deeply
  • A practical guide for developing a habit for personal worship
  • Suggested verses for your groups scripture memory focus
  • Tools to help you clarify and communicate your personal faith Journey
  • Missional assignments to move you and your group towards sharing the Gospel
  • Weekly resources for leaders to provide equipping as you use the materials

Which color should I start on?

The Journey has been designed so that it can be used in any order (Red/Blue/Green). Most importantly you should be sure you are purchasing the same color as the rest of your discipleship group and/or church. However, the majority of users this year will be using Green. If your group or your church is able to start this year with Green, you will have an enhanced experience by being in a larger community of users focusing on this content this year.

Who should purchase The Answer and Life Issues Books?

Over the course of the year, your Journey group will work to become more missional. The Answer and the Life Issues Books are tools that you will use to help you share your faith with others. We hope that each year, you will have had the opportunity to engage with others over the Gospel with these tools. If that is the case, you will need additional copies next year.

Who wrote The Journey?

The Journey was written by Randy Pope , the founding  pastor of Perimeter Church and Life on Life Ministries.  The Journey is distributed by Life on Life Ministries – to learn more about Life on Life visit the organization’s website here .

Yes. If you are a small group leader or are purchasing for a church, you can purchase multiple copies to cover the number of people that will be using the material each year. So that we can continue to offer The Journey at an affordable price please pay for each person using the materials.

Life-to-Life Discipleship

Two women practicing Life-to-Life discipleship

What is Life-to-Life Discipleship?

Life-to-Life ® discipleship is inviting someone in your life to grow in Christ by reading the Bible together, praying together and intentionally walking in everyday life together.

If you think of discipleship as a journey, then Life-to-Life discipleship is coming alongside someone on their journey and helping them take those next steps of following Jesus.

These everyday disciplemakers are committed to making disciples one person at a time, just like Jesus intentionally ministered in a Life-to-Life way with a select few.

“‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people’” Matthew 4:19 (ESV) .

This type of discipleship sees those everyday relationships – whether at home, work, school or in your community – as intentional opportunities to share your faith.

When you’re sharing life with someone already, they are more apt to want to know your story, which is a powerful tool for sharing the gospel.

Also, they may see something different in how you live life through what you prioritize and how you love others. Your gifts, relationship with God and heart for others are all you need to get started in discipleship.

Why Life-to-Life Discipleship is Important

Maybe you’ve had a relationship with Jesus since childhood and tell people you “grew up in the church.” Or maybe you’re brand new to following Him.

Wherever you’re at, you know there is more to this Christian life than what happens inside the church building. You desire to grow and see your friends grow. Here’s where Life-to-Life discipleship comes in. It is a vessel for the spiritual growth you and your friends desire. Life-to-Life discipleship is important because it’s built on the foundation of relationships and journeying with others through life . As you get to know someone, you build trust and most likely your friendship deepens. Consider the impact of studying the Bible and praying with someone you also journey with through the joys and trials of life.

But maybe you’re not sure what Bible study and prayer with someone else would even look like.

We want you to know that your story, life season and circle of influence is exactly what you need to be a Life-to-Life disciplemaker.

This is where we want to help.

Since 1933, we’ve developed disciples by sharing the gospel, studying the Bible, and praying together—face-to-face and person-by-person, in an approach we call “Life-to-Life discipleship.” By meeting people where they are on their personal faith journey, Life-to-Life discipleship builds authentic relationships that help people grow into a deeper relationship with Christ, and open the door for the Holy Spirit in all aspects of their lives.

Resources on Life-to-Life Disciplemaking

Discipleship tools for new believers.

Often the biggest obstacle to discipleship is the lack of confidence that you have what it takes to disciple someone else. But discipleship doesn’t have to be complicated.

What if we told you that discipleship is something you can fit into your everyday life, it is simple and can provide life meaning and joy.

If you’re looking for the confidence to help others grow in Christ with you, we can help.

A Calculus Teacher Practices Spiritual Multiplication

Jeni sensed that God was showing her that it was time to retire from her career of teaching high school calculus. She was reluctant.

“I wasn’t ready to leave teaching,” she shares. “I didn’t want to be put on a shelf in my retirement years.”

She started a disciplemakers group, following the model Karen Warin had used with Jeni and some other women. Jeni was teaching again, using her gifts and thought of three people to invite. Word of the group spread, and God brought 21 women to her home to be equipped and encouraged as disciplemakers.

How One Dad Equipped His Son for the Discipleship Long Game

Nate wasn’t sure how his soccer friends would respond to his faith, but knew he couldn’t just say he followed Jesus and not live it out every day. His dad often reminded him that when it came to making a valuable investment in life these two things were most important—God’s Word and people. And these two investments would give him encouragement and perspective when it seemed all the prayers and conversations weren’t making a difference in his friends’ lives.

Cultivating Spiritual Generations Among Sorority Sisters in Big and Little Ways

If she could go back to her college freshman year, Rachel Gibson would approach her sorority sisters who didn’t know Jesus in a completely different way. While she can’t relive those moments, God has gifted her opportunities to pour into both Liz Becker and Heidi Cooper, passing along all she has learned about discipleship. And what God has done in their sororities is beyond anything Rachel envisioned.

Going to the Nations From Alabama

Ted, a United States Army Field Artillery Captain, never thought that his assignment to Fort Rucker, Alabama would result in discipling a foreign military officer and generations of disciples halfway around the world. He is an instructor for the Aviation Captain’s Career Course and met David, a Rwandan International Military Student Officer, who attended the course. During their first week together, Ted had a few work-related conversations with David. Ted asked David questions about Rwanda during those conversations, and David told Ted about his home and life in Rwanda. It was not long until Ted asked David if he was interested in a Bible study that Ted led.

Extending Training Globally: From a pandemic response to a new training experience | The Navigators International Missions | Group of international students having online meeting

Virtual Discipleship Training Creates Global Impact

For more than a decade, The Navigators Global Student Program has brought together students, recent graduates, and Navigators staff from across the world for training around discipleship at Glen Eyrie Conference Center in Colorado Springs, CO. In 2020 and 2021 the 8-week program was virtual, connecting Navigators from around the world in training, small groups, and mentoring. Hlengiwe and other women from Zimbabwe were limited in their ability to attend the in-person program because of the challenges of funding and getting visas. With the virtual format she was able to encourage several women to participate. Now the Global Student Program eXperience (GSPX) participants are discipling others through their local Navigators ministries around the globe.

Who Are The Navigators?

The Navigators is a ministry that shares the gospel of Jesus Christ and helps others to grow in Christ, and help others do the same. We do this through Life-to-Life discipleship on college campuses, military bases, workplaces, inner cities, local communities and in 115 countries around the world—wherever there are people who need Christ.

This has the potential of creating a multiplication of disciplemakers—what we like to call spiritual generations.

Our Ministry (Spiritual Generations)

When God uses someone to help transform your life, you want to share all about how He used this person and the difference they have made.

“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others” 2 Timothy 2:2 (NIV).

As you come alongside someone with the transformational love of Christ and then they take what you have offered and share that love of Christ with another, the line of spiritual generations continues, branching out like a spiritual family tree .

History of The Navigators

Our legacy is coming alongside those who want to grow in their relationship with Jesus and then take those next steps to help others through Life-to-Life discipleship

This is evident from our beginning in 1933 . Dawson Trotman, our founder, saw the benefits of discipleship principles in his own life and wanted to share these with others. This young lumberyard worker reached out to students, Sunday school classes and even sailors in the U.S. Navy helping them grow through the Word of God. He often shared the Bible through the Scriptures he had memorized .

Invest in the Next Generation of  Disciplemakers

Today, millions of people around the world do not yet know Christ or desire to deepen their relationship with Him. Our mission is to inspire and equip more people “To Know Christ, make Him known, and help others do the same Ⓡ ”; we do this through Life-to-Life discipleship.

Invest in the next generation of disciplemakers by joining us through prayer and financial support of what God is doing through The Navigators ministry.

Through your generosity, you are fulfilling Christ’s call to go and make disciples.

“‘Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age’” Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV).

Playing quarterback in the NFL is a tough gig. Sure, the pay is pretty good, and if you play really well—the fame can be fun, too. But as always, there is a flipside to every coin, and if things don’t go your way as an NFL signal-caller, things can change really quickly. Just ask Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff.

Goff joined his friends Robbie and Will McInerny on the Willbo podcast to discuss his life in the NFL thus far, how being in Detroit has changed him as a leader, and much more. Part of what makes a show like this work is making the guest really comfortable to the point where they feel okay with letting their guard down and giving listeners and viewers a peek behind the curtain. Right away, it is easy to tell that Goff is comfortable sitting in his home with his friends. Even his dog, Quincy, joined him on the couch early on.

The trio would go on to talk about a bunch of topics beyond those I mentioned above, including Goff being a skinny kid, his tendency to eat too quickly (something his fiance is evidently not a big fan of. I hear you there, Jared), getting really close to the Super Bowl , his life growing up in California, their time at Berkeley, and of course—a lot of football-related things.

If you have the time, I definitely suggest watching the whole interview. It isn’t often that Goff is this comfortable for this kind of chat, so seeing him in a setting like this was pretty cool. You can watch the entirety of the interview by clicking below or right here .

And now, onto the rest of today’s notes:

Sophia Bush is showing gratitude for the women in her life.

The One Tree Hill alum, 41, reflected on how she has found fulfillment in her life by working with a close circle of women.

"It was a journey to get here but I'm happier than ever and that is something I cherish,"  she told E! News at the 2024 Fashion Trust U.S. Awards on Tuesday, April 9. "I think one of the reasons for that is all of the incredible women in my life."

She noted that she has been “working steadfastly on projects and collaborations,” adding, “I've lined up three projects this year with groups of women that I cherish working with. It makes me feel very excited for us."

Last month, Bush and Nia Batts announced their investment in Chiyo, a company which aims to better maternal nutrition. The pair will also co-executive produce a documentary about deep fakes.

Bush also stepped out with former pro soccer player Ashlyn Harris in March to celebrate women in sports at a special event at Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence, which included 150 of the most influential women in an array of sports fields, in collaboration with Billie Jean King ’s Women’s Sports Foundation.

The event capped a busy month for Bush and Harris after PEOPLE first confirmed that the pair's friendship had evolved into something more.

The news of a romance between the two came after Bush and husband Grant Hughes separated after 13 months of marriage in August. The following month, Harris filed for divorce from wife and fellow soccer pro, Ali Krieger .

She and Harris have since attended multiple events together, including the Elton John AIDS Foundation's annual Oscars viewing party on March 10, where they were photographed together with actor Eric McCormack inside, and at the annual art festival  Art Basel  in Miami in December 2023.

The pair also enjoyed a night out for  Ruby Rose ’s birthday bash in March. Following the party at the Magic Castle in Los Angeles, a source told PEOPLE that Bush and Harris "came together and were very sweet” at the event.

“ They were very affectionate and shared kisses throughout the night,” the insider said. “They seem very, very happy.”

In early January, Bush reflected on her year that “changed everything" in a lengthy Instagram post.

“No more playing small. No more turning my back on myself. No more settling for what falls short because ‘who am I to ask for more?’ This year put me back in my body. I left it a long time ago, in such a way that I forgot what it felt like to inhabit my own skin. I feel my whole self from the tops of my ears to the tips of my toes now. It’s breathtaking. Life giving. Affirming," said Bush.

'Her Journey': New Kudzukian series inspires young women through Memphis success stories

Chandell Ryan, the new CEO of the Downtown Memphis Commission, is featured in Kudzukian's new series, "Her Journey." The series highlights the accomplishments of Black women in Memphis who are excelling in their careers and are great role models.

With the goal of providing opportunities to enlighten African American girls and young women, Kudzukian Media Group has launched the first season of "Her Journey." The series of 10 episodes highlights the accomplishments of Black women in Memphis who are making strides in their careers and are great role models for the next generations.

"Her Journey" is a collection of informative conversations with women from various backgrounds. Many have succeeded despite growing up in poverty and other less-than-ideal circumstances. Some have literally made it on their own, while others have taken paths that were not straight or quick or easy.

Joy Doss, the series’ host and producer at Kudzukian Media, says the use of the word “journey” is intentional. “Life is a long haul not a weekend road trip,” she says. “We want our girls and young women to be inspired, to know that they don’t have to be afraid to dream.”

"Her Journey," she says, puts them face-to-face with real life examples of women who have overcome poverty, loss, disappointment, starting from scratch, divorce, teen motherhood and other disadvantages.

Doss adds that the women featured can counter "the false information circulating” that children don’t have examples to inspire them. “They may not have good examples in their immediate lives, but there are plenty of good examples in our city. This is an opportunity to show that ‘If they can see it, they can be it.’”

The series on inspiring women follows Kudzukian Media Group’s "The Journey," which focuses on accomplished Memphis men and how they can inspire Black boys and young men. "The Journey" launched several years ago and has presented more than 80 interviews.

MORE FROM LYNN NORMENT: Women continue to work just as hard as men but earn only a fraction of the pay

Larry Robinson, CEO of Kudzukian Media Group, says "Her Journey" and "The Journey" are important initiatives, what he calls “contributions to the solution.” “We want our young men and women to know that they are bigger than their past, that their past will not determine their future,” says Robinson.

The women featured in Season 1 of Her Journey include Bacarra Mauldin, newly appointed CEO of MATA; Chandell Ryan, newly appointed CEO of the Downtown Memphis Commission; Roshun Austin, president and CEO, The Works; Audrey Willis, co-founder CodeCrew and program director of CodeCrew Code School; Tish Towns, EVP and CAO, Regional One Health; Linda McNeil, senior account manager, Gaskill Strategies; Lucy Shaw, former CEO of The MED (now Regional One Health) and current CEO of Spirit of Service; Jozelle Booker, president and CEO of MMBC Continuum; Pat Mitchell Worley, CEO, Soulsville Foundation; and Takeisha Berry Brooks, founder and CEO of A Natural Affair Salons and the Define Natural Hair product line.

The "Her Journey" initiative will work with schools to share with students the outstanding women spotlighted. “Our hope is that these young people will see themselves in these women,” says Doss. “They need to know that not everybody had a leg up; nobody had a trust fund. Everyone had to get an education, everybody had to work to overcome challenges.”

Yet they were able to achieve, even excel. That’s what "Her Journey" wants young women to realize: Regardless of your family or economic status, you too can succeed.

Meet three of the women featured in 'Her Journey'

The inaugural "Her Journey" series features engaging interviews with 10 successful Black women in Memphis. These revealing stories will be shared to inspire girls and young women to succeed despite personal circumstances. Here are brief profiles on three of the women in "Her Journey."

Takeisha Berry Brooks is an award-winning hairstylist and entrepreneur who specializes in natural hair and products. She is founder/CEO of A Natural Affair salons and Define Natural Hair products. After 10 years as a stylist, in 2008 she opened her salon and a second location in 2022. An educator and mentor to students and salon owners, she partners with Memphis-Shelby County Schools’ cosmetology program. “I’m especially honored to be a part of 'Her Journey', to be aligned with women of this caliber,” says Brooks.

Roshun Austin is president/CEO of The Works Inc., a community development corporation that builds single-family and multifamily properties in distressed neighborhoods. The Works operates a mortgage loan fund, farmers market, greengrocer, mobile grocery and provides nutrition education. Austin says "Her Journey" is a “phenomenal” project. “I grew up in poverty... I don’t want that for other children, girls. I want to help them avoid some of the things I encountered.”

Audrey Willis is co-founder of CodeCrew, which focuses on creating diversity and inclusion in computing through education, workforce development and advocacy in computer science. She is also program director for CodeCrew’s Code School, which trains adults and youth in software development, robotics and other technology. Willis previously was Shelby County’s first manager of innovation and performance analysis. “Being a woman in tech is difficult,” says Willis. “Being a Black woman in tech is even more difficult.”

Lynn Norment, a columnist for The Commercial Appeal, is a former editor for Ebony Magazine.

2024 Final Four: UConn's Donovan Clingan and a journey of dominance marked by tragedy

Donovan Clingan has put on a clinic to lead UConn to the Final Four. (1:43)

journey life on life

BOSTON -- IF THERE'S anyone qualified to recognize a lack of patience, it's UConn walk-on Andrew Hurley . He's the son of coach Dan Hurley and the grandson of Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley, which gives him a generational familiarity with impatient DNA.

When asked for the defining personality trait of UConn star center Donovan Clingan , Andrew Hurley chuckles and mentions his close friend's limited patience.

"He's always got to be the first one to be anywhere," Andrew Hurley said, flashing the family's noted sarcastic chuckle. "We will be walking into team dinner tonight, he'll be the first one into the restaurant. He's always got to be the first one there."

Clingan, a 20-year-old sophomore, starts his day with a cup of hot coffee from Dunkin' that begins a caffeinated quest to be first. Be it going to a workout or meeting up with friends at the local hibachi grill, Clingan sprints ahead. "When people are late," Clingan deadpans, "it bothers me."

Clingan says his punctuality comes from his mother, Stacey Porrini Clingan, who instilled a simple lesson: "If you're not 15 minutes early, you're 10 minutes late."

As one of the breakout stars of this NCAA tournament, Clingan has emerged as an antithetical modern basketball prospect -- getting ahead by sticking around. He has taken his impatience and made it a discipline, allowing him to deliver on time for UConn.

His four years at a local public school, Bristol Central High in Bristol, Connecticut, and playing for the home-state university, cast a throwback vibe to Clingan's basketball development. He projects as a top-5 pick in the upcoming NBA draft and has led UConn to the cusp of back-to-back NCAA titles. It marks an on-time arrival of an atypical plan.

CLINGAN RESISTED THE temptations of the system and stayed local, the rare four-year public high school player to emerge as a high-profile recruit.

The decision ties to the death of his mother from breast cancer just over six years ago. Stacey's passing left Donovan -- and the community who revered her -- reeling.

Porrini Clingan graduated from Bristol Central in the Class of 1993 as a three-sport star in swimming, basketball and track. While in high school, she wrote a poem for her creative writing class on what it was like to be recruited, comparing it to going "on a date and you don't know what to say."

Porrini Clingan chose Maine and, attending on a hoops scholarship, helped the Black Bears to three straight NCAA tournaments.

She ended up in the Bristol and the University of Maine Sports Halls of Fame, with her qualities as a teammate and friend just as distinguished as her athletic accolades.

After graduation, she taught first grade at Greene-Hills Elementary in Bristol and touched a generation of students.

"I want to play in her name, her honor and try to do special things so I can make her proud." Donovan Clingan on his mom, Stacey

A former English teacher at Bristol Central, Gale Dickau, who is the director of the school's writing initiative, recalled Porrini Clingan as the "velvet hammer," gentle but persuasive. She stood 6-foot-4, and Tim Barrette -- a veteran coach at Bristol Central -- said her stature made her "larger than life" to the first graders she taught.

Clingan says that before his mom died when he was in eighth grade, he didn't take basketball particularly seriously. As he forged his way through a difficult period, he leaned into the sport -- his mom's best sport -- and along that path came a support system.

Amid the loss, Donovan Clingan channeled his anger and focus into basketball, leaning into the lessons Stacey had taught him. The community rallied around Donovan, his sister, Olivia, and father, Bill.

"When she passed, I really just told myself I want to just take my game to another level," Clingan said. "I want to play in her name, her honor and try to do special things so I can make her proud."

While many of the top 100 recruits hopped prep schools to raise their profiles, Clingan stuck around and worked landscaping in his hometown -- cutting lawns in the summer and shoveling snow in the winter.

He played four seasons at his local high school, stayed loyal to his lower-profile AAU team (Boston Spartans) and chose to stay at UConn when the promise of being an NBA first-round pick loomed after UConn won the national title his freshman year.

"How do you measure loyalty?" Barrette asked. "Especially in today's day and age, the almighty dollar is what everyone looks at. Donovan is different."

Staying for his sophomore season elevated his career and extended UConn's dominance of college basketball.

AT 3 A.M. DURING snowstorms, Rich Brown would pull into Donovan Clingan's driveway in Bristol and pick up the country's tallest snow shoveler.

For nearly three years in high school, Clingan worked for Brown, who runs Rich's Property Management LLC when he's not working in security and as an athletics coordinator at Bristol Central.

Clingan would shovel his own driveway before hopping in with Brown in the predawn darkness. The gig paid between $15 and $20 an hour, plus breakfast at Dunkin'.

In the summer, Clingan would landscape yards for Brown, even leaving a souvenir dent on the side of one of Brown's dump trucks when a lawnmower flipped during an ill-fated attempt to mow a hill. "Hey Mr. Brown, I dinged up the door on your dump truck," Clingan recalled sheepishly. "I tried to be cute with the yellow mower. It didn't work out. I'll pay for it."

"In the grocery line, pumping gas. Everyone is talking about Donovan." Former Bristol Central english teacher Gale Dickau

Mishaps aside, Clingan proved a diligent employee. But on the first day college coaches could legally call recruits -- June 15 heading into his junior year -- Clingan warned Brown he would get some calls that day. High-profile coaches buzzed his phone, and he continued to cut the lawns. "It didn't stop him from working," Brown said.

Shoveling the driveways and landscaping the lawns of Bristol illuminate the connection of Clingan to the city. It's a story of reciprocal love, with his ties to the community deepening in the wake of his mom's death.

"I think his decision to stay in Bristol is the heart and soul of that kid," said Dickau, who began working as a student teacher at Bristol Central in 1967. "He so much values family. From losing his mom, he's created this very strong connection to family, friends, the school community and the community at large.

"She was such a magnetic personality. She had legions of friends in town, and they helped take those kids under their wing. It's such a strong bond."

Barrette jokes that the powerhouse AAU programs would call him about Clingan joining their team. And the powerhouse prep schools would call his AAU coach, Joe Chatman. Both knew that Clingan didn't want to go anywhere.

The coaches prioritized Clingan's personal development as much as on-court development as he grew into his frame -- he's now listed at 7-2. While his competition wasn't elite in high school, his choice to stick around was based on more than rankings and offers.

"I don't think the dreams of being a top-5 pick in the NBA draft and all that were on his list at that point," Barrette said. "Just being the best basketball player that his mom wanted him to be."

Clingan led Bristol Central to a state title in 2022. The title game victory marked 43 consecutive wins for the school. (The prior season, the state tournament was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.) He averaged 30.3 points and 18.4 rebounds in the season that ended with a banner.

"In town this week and last week, no one talks about anything else but Donovan," Dickau said. "In the grocery line, pumping gas. Everyone is talking about Donovan."

At age 20, there are signs Donovan Clingan is still growing up. He wears a T-shirt under his basketball uniform, the time-tested sign of an underclassman's still-developing upper body. At the NCAA dais for interviews, Clingan's eyes dart back and forth to the teammates surrounding him, his grin showing he's still a bit unsure how to act in the spotlight.

UConn coaches note his awareness and youthfulness. Clingan went through a true recruiting process before committing to UConn, visiting Syracuse, Michigan and Ohio State.

Clingan knew exactly where he wanted to be. When he committed to UConn in July 2021 as a top-50 prospect, he was regarded as the school's best incoming big man since Andre Drummond .

"At that point, all of these things hadn't happened yet for this staff," UConn assistant Luke Murray said. "So for him to be as acclaimed as he was, one of the top high school players in Connecticut the last decade or two, for him to stay home was huge for us."

But everyone knew there would be a lot of work between his commitment and a spot in the NBA draft green room, and Clingan has embraced the journey. When the 2022-23 season ended with the Huskies winning the national title and Clingan contributing off the bench, he didn't really ponder the NBA.

His name buzzed in the mock draft world, but he knew his game and body needed more time in the 860 area code. He averaged just 13.1 minutes off the bench and scored 6.9 points per game.

"He would have been a top-20 pick, but he knew he wasn't ready," Dan Hurley said. "Literally, the next day, he just came in and said, 'Hey, Coach, I'm not ready. Let's run it back.' There wasn't a meeting with the agent and a series of drama, you know. He is a special kid."

That decision has paid dividends, as Clingan nearly doubled his minutes and scoring for the Huskies this season. He's averaging 12.9 points and 7.5 rebounds, and his 2.5 blocks per game is No. 8 nationally. He has maintained his trademark impatience, as he called Barrette while getting into the dentist chair for a procedure last year to reattach one of his front teeth, which was knocked out against Georgetown in December. He buzzed at 10 a.m. to schedule a workout for 12:30 p.m., just as he'd be leaving the dentist chair.

The list of what he has worked on this season is long, as he has focused on his passing, finishing over both shoulders and expanding his range. (He's quick to point out he hit a pair of 3-pointers this year, as he's 2-for-7 on the season.)

"Really just trying to be as impactful as I can," he said. "Set up better screens and just working on defense, moving my feet, protecting the rim and just really trying to be more aggressive in ball screens."

The impact came slow at times. He battled a foot issue early in the season and missed nearly a month after hurting himself in late December.

Murray said that Clingan focused on his diet and came back lean, focusing on portion size and eliminating late-night eating. (Clingan used to drink a 32-ounce Brisk iced tea before high school games, a window into some needed nutritional tweaking.)

Clingan refers to Dan Hurley as an "enemy and your best friend at the same time," appreciative of how he has pushed him hard in practice and embraced him off the floor. "He wants to get the most out of you," Clingan said, "and he wants you to be on your A-game without being complacent."

Hurley calls Clingan the "Jolly Green Giant," appreciative of how he has endured and remained a positive spirit. "It's just rare to see somebody that has dealt with what he has dealt with, the heartbreaking tragedy, and then has the personality that he has," Hurley said. "He's so vibrant, and he brings so much personality."

THE SLOW BURN of development completely unfurled in the NCAA tournament, as Clingan blocked eight shots against Northwestern and emerged as the most dominant player on the floor against Illinois in the Elite Eight.

Clingan showed his mobility and defensive versatility by turning into a defensive buzz saw. He blocked five shots as the Illini went 0-for-19 on shots he contested. He scored the game's first seven points and finished with 22 in 22 minutes. Illinois star Terrence Shannon Jr ., another projected NBA lottery pick, became visibly hesitant, according to Hurley, after getting blocked at the rim so many times.

In the stands, Clingan said a crew of about 14 friends cheered him on. His father, Bill, family members and his longtime girlfriend and her family were flanked by friends and former coaches. Barrette and Chatman remained a unified coaching front, sitting next to each other in TD Garden.

His obsession with arriving early and insistence on staying home have both Clingan and UConn in rare territory. UConn is well-positioned to defend its title, potentially becoming the first program to do so since Florida in 2006 and 2007.

Clingan and the Huskies meet Alabama on Saturday in Phoenix in the Final Four.

"Being born and raised from Connecticut, to put that jersey on and just to compete at the highest level ... it's special," he said. "It's a historic program that has achieved a lot of things, and so I'm just trying to be a part of it and just try to represent the state the right way."

That patience will also pay off. Clingan's recognition that he needed to stay projects to more than $20 million in guaranteed money -- the contract difference between being pick No. 5 in this upcoming NBA draft as opposed to No. 20 last year.

But it has been priceless to have that journey unfold close to home, as a community and state have rallied around him. And Clingan knows his mother is happy with how it has all unfolded. Except, of course, his 57% free throw percentage.

"I know that she's smiling down, I know she's supporting me," he said, before smiling himself. "And I know she's definitely not happy with my free throws."

Saguaro catcher welcomed by baseball community after grueling journey from Venezuela

journey life on life

It took four months, crossing through several countries—some of it by foot—surviving on one meal a day, seeing people along the way who didn't make it.

Scottsdale Saguaro's 16-year-old sophomore catcher Alain Gudino-Gomez survived the move from Venezuela with his parents and 11-year-old sister to find a better life. A safer life, where he's been lovingly embraced by a baseball community, and catching maybe the best high school pitcher in America.

They got here in November, found an immigration attorney, and went through a process for Gudino-Gomez to be part of the Sabercats' team.

"For my sister and myself, it's to better our lives, so we can study here," Gudino-Gomez said through a translator before a recent game. "At first it was meeting people who spoke Spanish. But it's getting easier. I get along well with everyone."

More Saguaro sports news: Saguaro QB Mason Bray gets Arizona offer after death of dad, a former Wildcat standout

Early in the season, he had to get used to catching Cam Caminiti, a senior left-hander, who has all of Major League Baseball tracking every pitch he throws this season. In a game early in the season against Deer Valley, in which Caminiti struck out the first 16 batters, one of his 97 mph fastballs broke through the webbing of Gudino-Gomez's glove.

"He was catching me with a kid's glove," Caminiti said. "I broke right through that first game. But I got him a new glove. He's good there. But he's been a huge help for me. It's been tough with the English barrier. But growing up, I went to Pueblo (Elementary School, taking Spanish), so I speak a little bit of Spanish. So I can talk to him a little bit, which is good. He's a great kid. I love having him around."

Gudino-Gomez said he's gotten more comfortable over time catching Caminiti.

With the returning starter out with an injury, he's been asked to handle maybe the best trio of pitchers in the state with Caminiti, Cade Shumard (New Mexico State signee) and Billy Gregory (Grand Canyon), for the top-rated high school baseball team (16-3) in 4A.

Coming into his own on campus

Saguaro coach Joe Muecke said his school was fortunate to have Gudino-Gomez show up on campus.

"We feel like we've helped him as much as he's helped us," Muecke said. "He found a home here. It speaks volumes to our community, the outreach. There's amazing staff here, helping get him acclimated and assimilated in how things go. Every step of the way, watching the community rally around the family makes it special."

But it wasn't easy getting here.

The family set off together on a journey not knowing how they would wind up. They had to go through Central America, including Panama, then spent two months in Mexico, before crossing over into the United States and claiming asylum.

More high school sports news: ALA Gilbert North coach fired over decisions related to Preston Lord defendant

Gudino-Gomez and his family have been helped by a Phoenix bilingual attorney, Rene Siqueiros, who is navigating the family through the immigration process that can take years to resolve.

"There really is no 'quote unquote ' right way to do it, because the immigration laws here are so strict," Siqueiros said. "It's just so broken, as well. For individuals who have legitimate claims for asylum, like Alain and his parents, it's so difficult for them to get some sort of immigration relief."

Sigueiros said the family was detained by immigration officials as part of the process, and placed in deportation proceedings, but they have a right to fight it before an immigration judge.

"That's going to take quite a few years," Siquieros said. "As you can imagine, it's just packed. There's not enough resources as far as judges are involved in adjudicating these cases. It's going to take a few years. But I'm assisting them in that process."

Overcoming the daunting journey to get here

Gudino-Gomez's parents, Lislen and Joel, were able to get work authorization. His mom works as a dog groomer, his father runs a food truck. Both make it out to see him play baseball, supporting him through school. Academics is big for them, and he's succeeding there, too, as well as hitting .310 with 16 RBIs as a switch-hitter for the Sabercats.

But the road to get here was treacherous. They saw others who didn't make it.

"Muchos," Alain's father said.

They went from Venezuela to Columbia to Panama. They would spend five days on foot at times. Other times they would travel by bus, and also by canoe.

They had to cross rivers, mountains and rain forests.

"It was better than getting robbed by being in mountains," Alain's mother said through an interpreter.

They would eat one meal a day to save the food they packed with them. One of those meals would be a can of tuna among them. Alain was always in the lead when they walked for miles and miles.

"It was life or death," said Lislen, who speaks no English, through the interpreter about wanting to leave Venezuela. "There's an opportunity here. It's a better future."

Former Major League Baseball player David Segui, who has two sons playing for Arcadia's baseball team, helped with translating for the parents. Segui said it was the same reason why his dad came over from Cuba when he was a kid.

"It's for a better opportunity," Segui said.

Gudino-Gomez adjusting to English, life here with his teammates

Gudino-Gomez is working on his English. During the two months they spent in Mexico, he studied English, trying to grasp onto words.

"There was a teacher in English class that I took," he said through the translator. "I was building on that listening to new friends."

He said the hardest part of the journey was navigating the rain forests in Panama and Mexico. But he said they were blessed being able to buy food.

In Scottsdale, he became friends with sophomore shortstop Zander Bratspis.

"I try to help him out as much as I can," Bratspis said. "Whenever I'm training, I invite him to our house. I try to be the best friend I can for him, because they came over here not knowing anybody but some of his family. I try to be like family to him."

Dominic Caminiti, Cam's dad, has gotten to know Alain.

"The young man is special," Dominic said. "For Cam, Billy and Cade, Saguaro has got a catcher that will help showcase their skills on the mound. But more importantly a friend for life.

"There are so many beautiful things that happen in baseball that has zero to do with the score or the outcome of the game."
