- Best Train Rides in Colorado
Posted by Editor on March 31, 2020 in Colorado Lifestyle , Mountain Life , Travel with No Comment Yet
Colorado has some incredibly beautiful mountains, and they’re great to see while you’re hiking, skiing, or just driving on the roads . But, there’s a method of travel, while a little old fashioned, that is often overlooked. Still, it’s a wonderful way experience the breathtaking peaks of the Rocky Mountains from a different viewpoint. Yes, we’re talking about train rides. Believe it or not Colorado offers some of the best train rides throughout the country .
Everyone should see Colorado from the rails, and you’re in luck because there are some epic train rides in the Centennial State. For some inspiration, check out this list of the best train rides in Colorado.
Georgetown Loop
One of the best train rides in Colorado, and arguably the world, is just 30 miles down the road from Winter Park and Grand Park . The Georgetown Loop was completed in 1884, and despite being only three miles long, it still manages to be incredibly impressive. That’s because the narrow gauge tracks that it rides on snake through some intense mountain terrain in order to connect two mountain towns. You don’t need to be trying to strike it rich to appreciate these views.
The video below is of the Shay Number 9 steam engine in action as it makes its way through the Georgetown Loop.

It’s hard to say you’ve been to Colorado if you’ve never taken part in this experience. There’s a special Amtrak train that leaves Union Station in Denver in the morning, and it heads up to Winter Park Resort to drop off passengers for a day on the slopes. It’s a tradition that dates back to 1912, but it fills up, so buy your tickets early. Plus, they have one-way tickets, just in case you never want to leave Winter Park.

Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge
Continuing a common theme, this is another narrow gauge train that connects two old mining towns. However, this one was pieced together in the 1960s using cars from other mines. They remodeled and relocated the old stations, and even had a custom water tower built and shipped from Denver. It’s a short trip, but a fun ride with some great views.

The look of this train is ultra-modern compared to most of the others on this list, but the views really can’t be beaten. It’s built on cogs so it can travel up steep inclines, and it needs them because it’s the highest cog train in the world. It goes all the way to the summit of the 14,110 foot Pikes Peak next to Colorado Springs, so it makes it easy for anyone to get to the top of one of Colorado’s elite mountains.

13 Best Scenic Train Rides in Colorado You Can’t Miss (2023)
- By jesse.sumrak
The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Ride is one of my favorite scenic train rides in Colorado. As a Ouray resident, I’ve had the opportunity to ride this train in various seasons for fun, adventure, and even holiday tradition.
You hop on the train in Durango, and it takes you on a beautiful 3.5-hour ride through the San Juan Mountains to the mining town of Silverton. The train ride features:
- Rolling hills
- Views of epic mountains
- Steep cliffs (close enough to touch…but don’t touch!)
- Narrows canyons
- Raging rapids
You’ll have a 2-hour layover in Silverton to explore, shop, and eat before hopping on the train to reverse the route back to Durango. It’s an all-day train adventure that’ll give you some of the best views of the San Juan Mountains from the not-so-cushy seats of a train.
Really, they’re not super-duper comfortable.
You can choose an open-air train car or an enclosed car—during the summer, I highly recommend the open-air option. You get much better views of the surrounding scenery, and there’s a bit more room for kids to walk around and explore.
Other Durango and Silverton Train Rides
Now, that’s just the traditional Durango and Silverton train ride experience, but the railroad has a few other options to explore:
- Cascade Canyon Express: Condense your journey to just 5 hours (instead of 9+) while still seeing jaw-dropping scenery, geological features, and epic high mountain curves.
- Cascade Canyon Winter Train: Take a trip to Cascade Canyon and back in the middle of winter for an unforgettable snow-bound train experience.
- The Polar Express: Listen to the story of the Polar Express while dancing chefs serve you hot chocolate. You’ll visit the North Pole, and Santa Claus even makes a surprise appearance on the train to give each child the “first gift of Christmas.”
Backpackers can also use the train in the summer to get prime access to the Chicago Basin hiking area. During warm summer months, entire cars will get off and on at this destination to go experience the remote Weminuche Wilderness and bag some of Colorado’s most epic 14’ers.
2. Georgetown Loop Railroad
The Georgetown Loop Railroad is arguably the best train ride near Denver, Colorado. It’s less than an hour’s drive away from the Mile High City and just a skip off I-70 to park and embark.
You’ll hop on the train for a short 2-mile ride between the historic mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume. Right from the get-go, the train takes you over a scenic bridge with thrilling vertical drops on both sides. This is the pinnacle of exposure on a bridge, and they help freeze the moment in time by completely stopping in the middle to allow for pictures.
The train takes you over a handful of other bridges as it winds its way across the rocky canyon toward Silver Plume. Once you reach the end of your journey, you have the option to get off and explore some tourist attractions at Lebanon Silver Mine (you’ll pay for that before you get on the train). After the train gets sorted out, you’ll ride back to Georgetown to end your locomotive journey.
The Georgetown Loop Railroad is the perfect train ride for families because it’s not too long and not too short. You get just the right amount of time on the train without your kiddos getting bored or antsy—it’s a win-win for everyone.
3. Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Train Ride
The Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Train Ride takes passengers on a 45-minute trip to see the rich history of the area’s gold mines. You’ll get to ride the 15-ton iron horse steam locomotive and see amazing views of Pikes Peak, Echo Valley, and historic gold mining camps.
It’s a first-come, first-serve train ride, so you’ll need to get in line to earn yourself a spot. All the cars are open, and the train runs rain or shine—so prepare to get a little wet if the weather looks dicey.
The conductor narrates the entire journey, and these people are top-notch. They care about this area’s history, and they’ll share dozens of interesting facts you’ll actually want to hear.
4. Royal Gorge Route Railroad
Despite its breathtaking views, the Royal Gorge is still a Colorado hidden gem (relatively). Seriously, ask a Colorado local if they’ve been to the Royal Gorge, and you’d be surprised by how few have visited (and how few know about it).
The Royal Gorge Railroad takes you through the winding gorge and gives you a unique bottom-up view of the tall cliffs, the winding Arkansas River, and the Royal Gorge Bridge (one of the world’s tallest suspension bridges).
Unlike most of the train rides on this list, the Royal Gorge Railroad feels a bit more ritzy. They offer first-class seating and dining, and the train also features themed rides like Murder Mystery Dinner Train , Mother’s Day Train, and Royal Afternoon Tea at the Mansion .
5. Colorado Amtrak
The California Zephyr train passes through the heart of Colorado, making a stop in Denver as it makes its way between the end destinations of Chicago and Emeryville, San Francisco. You get a taste of everything the Western United States has to offer on this long train ride:
- Snow-capped Sierra Nevadas
- Desert terrain
- Rocky Mountains
- Glenwood Canyon
- Winter Park
- Moffat Tunnel
- San Pablo Bay
The train serves over 30 train stations along the journey, but here are the notable stops in Colorado:
- Fort Morgan, CO (FMG)
- Denver, CO – Union Station (DEN)
- Fraser-Winter Park, CO (WIP)
- Granby, CO (GRA)
- Glenwood Springs, CO (GSC)
- Grand Junction, CO (GJT)
This is not a “historical” train ride. You’ll get cushy seats, sleeper cars, dining options, and observation cars for a comfortable traveling experience.
6. Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad
The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad takes riders on a 65-mile journey through Toltec Gorge and over the 10,000-foot Cumbres Pass—hence, the name. It’s a 6.5-hour ride with amazing views the entire way, and the train itself is a National Historic Landmark.
The railroad describes itself as the “longest, the highest and most authentic steam railroad in North America.” You cross the state border with New Mexico 11 times as you zigzag through canyons, tunnels, and trestles. Right from the get-go, the train leaves the station and begins a steep 4% climb into the mountains.
You’ll see:
- Old mining camps
- 600-foot deep walls of Toltec Gorge
- 137-foot-tall Cascade Creek Trestle
- Chama Valley
- Tanglefoot Curve
- Rio de los Pinos
7. Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad
The Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad takes you on a 2.5-hour train ride to the Continental Divide with amazing panoramic views of the Arkansas River Valley and Leadville’s colorful mining past.
Along the way, you’ll see Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive (Colorado’s 2 tallest mountains), Freemont Pass, and the thick trees of the San Isabel National Forest. Depending on the time of year, you’ll also see fields of vibrant wildflowers surrounding the train as it meanders through the hills and mountains.
8. Tiny Town and Railroad
Tiny Town and Railroad is far from a traditional scenic Colorado train ride experience, but it’s something your children might appreciate even more. They’ll feel like giants in this children-sized town filled with replica buildings and a miniature train built for them.
It’s a 10-minute train ride that takes you around the unique park, and it’s powered by a real steam engine. The park is actually a decent size, with tons of shade-providing trees and over 100 tiny buildings. Oh, and the train ride is just $2 per ticket. This place is not a tourist rip-off—it’s a genuinely good time for kids and train enthusiasts.
9. Rockies to the Red Rocks
The Rocky Mountaineer train takes travelers for a colorful ride through western Colorado’s red rock territory. It stops in Denver, Glenwood Springs, and Moab, UT, as it winds through canyons and happens upon vast desert expanses.
Between Moab and Glenwood Springs, you’ll see incredible views of Mount Garfield and Ruby Canyon. Enjoy the springs for the rest of the evening before getting on the train for Day 2 between Glenwood Springs and Denver. This portion of the train ride crosses the Continental Divide with the 6.3-mile Moffat Tunnel.
10. The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway
The Pikes Peak Cog Railway is the highest cog train in the world, taking riders from Manitou Springs all the way up to the top of Pikes Peak (at 14,115 feet). It’s a 3.5-hour roundtrip ride with magical views of the Rocky Mountains and never-ending views of the plains to the east.
Discover Katharine Lee Bates’s inspiration for writing the song “America the Beautiful.” When she arrived on top of Pikes Peak, she wrote, “All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse.”
It’s hard to disagree.
While Pikes Peak is the star of the show, you’ll also get to experience dozens of other sights along your 9-mile trip to the top:
- Ruxton Creek
- Englemann Canyon
- Minnehaha Falls
Want to mix up your adventure? Hike up Pikes Peak and save your knees with a quick trip down on the Cog Railway. Oh, and enjoy a high-altitude doughnut at the summit for top-notch fuel.
11. Ridgway Railroad Museum & Train Ride
The Ridgway Railroad Museum features historic Colorado train equipment, and you can go out and view the cars at any time. However, you’ll need to wait until they’re open to look inside the cars and museum.
Come visit on a Saturday, and you can get a free ride on Motor No. 1 and Goose No. 4 as it rides around the few acres of property. You’ll get stellar views of the Cimarrons and Mt. Sneffels as you make loops around the train yard.
12. Winter Park Express Ski Train
The Winter Park Express Ski Train operates in partnership with Amtrak to take ski enthusiasts from Downtown Denver to the high-altitude slopes of Winter Park Resort. You can ride the train from mid-January to the end of March during peak ski season to avoid I-70 traffic and enjoy the no-stress adventure of train rides and skiing.
You could even take plane to train by flying into Denver International Airport and taking the A-Line to Union Station in Downtown Denver. It’s an expensive route to get to Winter Park, but the nature of public traveling feels almost European (almost).
13. Southwest Chief
The Southwest Chief is another Amtrak line that connects Chicago and Los Angeles with a few stops in Colorado’s southwest region:
- Lamar, CO (LMR)
- La Junta, CO (LAJ)
- Trinidad, CO (TRI)
These are seldom-visited Colorado towns with lots of natural beauty and adventure to offer. Visit Trinidad Lake for top-notch camping, hiking, boating, and fishing, or go on an epic hike up the Spanish Peaks.
14. [Bonus – Closed] Rio Grande Scenic Railroad
The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad takes travelers on a beautiful route from Alamosa to La Veta in Southern Colorado. The steam and diesel trains provide amazing views of the San Luis Valley and a handful of crossings through historic train towns.
Unfortunately, the Rio Grand Scenic Railroad is closed for the time being as owners look for new buyers.

Board one of the special evening trains that include live entertainment or try one of the themed rides like the Santa train which runs every winter. Ride how you choose from their open-air gondola that is free to all ticketed passengers to the classic coach car on up to the premium parlor car.

The park is open seasonally from May through October. There is a gift shop that serves cold ice cream for those warm summer days. Tiny Town also encourages visitors to pack a picnic to enjoy in one of the many shaded areas in the park.
Start and endpoint: 6249 S. Turkey Creek Rd, Morrison , CO
8. Colorado Amtrak
While the Colorado Amtrak lines are not necessarily historic or strictly for tourism, they are both scenic and fun ways to get from point A to B. They offer less stress than bustling airports and more comfort than taking a road trip in the car. There are 2 main lines that make their way through the state:
California Zephyr – for a high-speed tour through the Rockies, the California Zephyr offers six different stops in Colorado on its route between Chicago and San Francisco. The most popular place to board the train is in Downtown Denver at Union Station . Other Colorado stops include:
- Grand Junction
- Glenwood Springs
- Fort Morgan
Southwest Chief – traveling through Colorado’s southwest region, the Southwest Chief provides riders with access to area attractions including Bent’s Old Fort and other historical sites. With Colorado stops in La Junta , Lamar , and Trinidad , the train starts and ends in Chicago and Los Angeles.
9. Rockies to The Red Rocks
Board the Rocky Mountaineer for a luxury train experience from Denver to Moab, UT. The stunning scenery will start with alpine forests and towering canyons before transforming into the unique red rocks of the Moab desert in Utah.
Starting in Denver, you’ll travel along the Colorado River while you enjoy a fresh breakfast and then a three-course lunch. There will be plenty of chances to spot wildlife as you move through different canyons on your way to an overnight stop in Glenwood Springs.
Continue on the train after a good night of rest through Ruby Canyon, which is only accessible by train or river. You’ll then cross the state line into Utah, where you can catch a glimpse of the beautiful Arches National Park. Depart in Moab and explore as you please! This is a great way to slowly explore two breathtaking regions.
Start and endpoints: Denver, CO, and Moab, UT
10. Pikes Peak Cog Railway
Recently reopened after extensive renovations, the mile-high Pikes Peak Cog Railway chugs 9 miles up the ever-famous Pikes Peak to a summit of 14,115 feet. Experience panoramic views from the newly updated visitors center at the top, grab a famous high-altitude donut, and then board the train back to Manitou.
Start and endpoint: Manitou Springs
CLOSED | Rio Grande Scenic Railroad
As of 2019, this railroad has been closed while it searches for new ownership. Updates will be posted if they reopen in the future, but for now, you’ll have to check out a different rail line.
The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad chugs along some of Colorado’s most beautiful scenery in the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountain ranges. First completed in 1878, this railroad was a major supplier of ore, lumber, cattle, and sheep to the developing area. Today its passengers can choose from themed rides like the Fall Colors Explorer Train, Wine Train Colorado, or even the Paint ‘N’ Sip Wine Train.
Perhaps one of the more unique aspects of the Rio Grande railroad is the accessibility to Mountain Rails Live. Join world-class musicians and ride together to Fir Summit – a concert venue only accessible by train.
Start and endpoints: Le Veta / Alamosa / Fort Garland
Each of these rides’ schedules varies by season, so it is always best to check their websites for the most current schedule. Safe travels!

History of Railways in Colorado
The history of railways in Colorado is like a story of how trains helped Colorado grow and change. Back in the 1800s, when people discovered gold in Colorado, they needed a way to move lots of things like gold, people, and equipment. That’s when they started building railways – tracks for trains – all across the state.
One really important railway was the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. This railway was a big deal because it built tracks even in the mountains, making it easier to connect towns and move stuff around, especially mining materials.
These railways weren’t just about moving things. They helped Colorado become richer by transporting valuable things like gold, silver, and agricultural products like cattle and wheat. This made towns like Leadville, Cripple Creek, and Aspen grow and become prosperous.
The railways also connected Colorado to the rest of the United States through a big network of train tracks. This meant that people and goods could easily move between Colorado and other states.
The railways changed more than just the economy. They also affected how people lived and the places they lived in. As more tracks were laid, towns and cities popped up along these routes. This brought people from different places, making Colorado a diverse and vibrant state.

7 Epic Colorado Trains That Will Take You to Beautiful Mountains, Sparkling Rivers, and Golden Groves
It's time to try a new, old-fashioned route to mountain adventure.
Laura Beausire is a Colorado-based writer with three decades of experience covering travel, art, design, and outdoor adventure. She has a master’s degree in art history and a background working in galleries and teaching design history. When she’s not on a hiking trail, Laura contributes to Wine Enthusiast, Food & Wine, Condé Nast Traveler, Shondaland, Hemispheres, Fodor’s, Mountain Living, and many other publications.
Next time you think about climbing a mountain, why not relax and let a train do all the work? Scenic railways up and down Colorado whisk travelers over craggy peaks, past sparkling rivers, and through golden aspen groves. From chugging steam trains to modern luxury carriages, these rail lines offer short jaunts and multiday adventures through the Rockies and beyond.
You never know what surprises you might find in the high-altitude wilderness, so keep an eye out for wildlife and pack a sweater in case the snow begins to fly.
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
Rail transport was essential to Colorado's early mining industry, and in 1882, this line connected the mines of Silverton with the smelters of Durango. Today's train rolls along that same 45-mile stretch of gorgeous scenery beside the Animas River, with vintage steam and diesel locomotives leading a variety of excursions throughout the year. Adventure packages — including zip lining, rafting, and Jeep tours — are available, along with special stops to access the Weminuche Wilderness and San Juan National Forest.
Royal Gorge Route Railroad
Built in 1880 and relaunched in 1998, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad travels between 1,000-foot rock walls while the Arkansas River rapids churn below. At its narrowest, Royal Gorge pinches down to 30 feet, so a suspended iron railway bridge hugs the north wall. The train runs all year, with historic locomotives and passenger carriages offering a range of 22-mile round-trip excursions from Cañon City's Santa Fe Depot. On board, the 403 Grill serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner made from Colorado-sourced ingredients.
Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad
This historic rail line was established in 1880 to serve silver mines in the San Juan Mountains, and it follows a jagged route that crosses the Colorado-New Mexico border 11 times. Pulled by a steam locomotive, the train runs 64-mile excursions between Antonito, Colorado, and Chama, New Mexico, climbing over 10,015-foot Cumbres Pass, through Toltec Gorge, and along the 137-foot-high Cascade Trestle. Express, half-day, and full-day trips (with lunch) are available, as are special Fourth of July, wildflower, geology, brunch, and dinner trains.
Leadville Railroad
Perched at 10,152 feet above sea level, Leadville is a former mining boom town in a spectacular natural setting. Passengers (and their well-behaved dogs) can board the Leadville Railroad for a 2.5-hour round-trip journey on a rail line dating to 1884. The train chugs toward the Continental Divide, through the San Isabel National Forest and Arkansas River Valley, offering views of Mount Massive and Mount Elbert, Colorado's two tallest mountains, along the way. Wildflower and fall foliage trains are dazzling, and other excursions include barbecue, zip line, and rafting packages.
The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway
Fresh from a three-year, $100 million renovation, the world's highest cog railroad (and the country's highest railroad) welcomes travelers on a nine-mile climb from Manitou Springs to the top of Pikes Peak. The cog railway has been running since 1891, and the scenery is still awe-inspiring. Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep, elk, and yellow-bellied marmots on your way to the new, LEED Silver-certified Summit Visitor Center, situated at 14,115 feet above sea level. This is the place to taste Pikes Peak's famously fluffy high-altitude donuts.
Georgetown Loop Railroad
Completed in 1884 and rebuilt in time for its 1984 centenary, the Georgetown Loop Railroad takes travelers on a 4.5-mile round-trip ride between the historic mountain towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume. Pulled by vintage steam and diesel electric locomotives, the trains rumble over four bridges, around hairpin turns, and through the forest, with Clear Creek splashing below. Excursions can also be combined with a tour of the Lebanon Silver Mine, where you can try your luck at gold panning.
Rocky Mountaineer
Named the World's Leading Luxury Train at the 2021 World Travel Awards, the Rocky Mountaineer built its stellar reputation in Canada. Now, it's come stateside, with a two-day Rockies to the Red Rocks itinerary linking Denver and Moab, including an overnight stop in Glenwood Springs. The train's glass-dome coaches offer a smooth ride — through the Moffat Tunnel, past Winter Park's ski lifts, and along the banks of the Colorado River as it flows through ranchland, wine country, and into the red canyon wilderness.

Front Door Service
Your adventure begins with luxury van pick-up service from your front door and then a relaxing drive to Granby, CO starts your day. When weather conditions permit, we drive over Ute Pass, offering a stunning view of the numerous 13,000’ peaks in the fabled Gore Range Mountains! Don’t forget to bring plenty of camera capabilities for this excursion as the outdoor panoramas are not to be missed! Once we turn east on Hwy. 40, you’ll catch your first glimpse of the mighty Colorado River. These pristine waters carved the magnificent rock formations that await. A few turns later we arrive in the sleepy mountain town of Granby, CO.
Here, your Alpenglow Adventures driver delivers your fresh, hand-crafted lunchtime delights and a complimentary bottle of water (all included with your fare) before boarding the Colorado Zephyr. The courteous Amtrak conductors will then direct you to the glass-domed observation car as you settle in for the ride of your life. The knowing smiles on your fellow passengers signal the visual satisfaction that is a vibrant part of this “steel rail caravan.” The view out your picture window is unparalleled, with so many incredible vistas that can only be experienced by railroad passengers. The dramatic wilderness of Upper Red and Gore Canyons are devoid of highway pavement, leaving nothing but the sense of raw, unspoiled nature! Eagle-eyed passengers will spot elk, moose and bighorn sheep in the ancient Colorado landscape.
Colorado's Majesty
River rafters and fly-fishermen know the beauty of the Colorado River as it flows to the west. Make sure to wave “Hello” to them as you travel the same route that many of the early frontier pioneers did over 140 years ago,… rugged folks looking for excitement and adventure in a journey of a lifetime – just like you! Just when you think the mountains could not get any more inspiring, the Colorado Zephyr enters the mouth of Glenwood Canyon. Regaled as the most photographed stretch of river scenery in the USA, your jaw drops as canyon walls suddenly tower 1,400 feet above you. With Interstate 70 on one side and your railcar hugging the other, Glenwood Canyon demonstrates America’s determination to blend modern transportation and primitive topology into a unique masterpiece for you to enjoy!

The Rocky Mountaineer’s Train Route: Your Ultimate Checklist
Posted: February 8, 2024 | Last updated: February 8, 2024
All aboard!
Rocky Mountaineer’s Rockies to the Red Rocks rail route runs between Denver, Colorado and Moab, Utah. The scenic train journey in the USA’s southwest has a length of 354 miles and takes a day and a half to complete, including an overnight stay in pretty resort town Glenwood Springs. As the route name suggests, the geology of the region is one of its star attractions, with the Rocky Mountains, rugged canyons, russet-colored rocks and swathes of desert visible from the train’s panoramic windows.
Click through the gallery to discover some of the standout experiences from Rocky Mountaineer's epic Rockies to the Red Rocks train trip...
1. See the Mile High City and its Capitol building
Denver, nicknamed the Mile High City after its elevation, is Colorado’s state capital and offers lots to see and do before or after riding the Rocky Mountaineer. You can join free guided tours of the Colorado State Capitol – a grand domed building designed by Elijah E. Myers and opened in 1894. From there it’s a five-minute walk to Denver Art Museum, whose collection of Indigenous works and depictions of America’s West are among its highlights.
2. Start the journey at Denver Train Siding
The Rocky Mountaineer begins or ends its Rockies to the Red Rocks route from Denver Train Siding at 36th Street and Wazee Street. After coach transfers from their hotel, passengers are greeted by members of the crew and warmly welcomed on board. The train is made up of single-deck SilverLeaf carriages, which have comfortable leather seats and panoramic oversized windows that make it easy to enjoy the scenery along the route.
3. Ride the Big 10 Curve
The line that the Rocky Mountaineer runs on is not only incredibly scenic, it's also remarkable for feats of engineering, including the Big 10 Curve, which was built in the early 1900s and is located around 20 miles from Denver. Named after the degree of tightness along a section of track with a 2% incline, the curve helps minimize the distance traveled on the climb into the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Looking back provides fine views of distant Denver and its suburbs far below.
4. Snap verdant landscapes in the tunnel district
The journey into the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains includes traveling through a 13-mile stretch of track known as the tunnel district. Completed in 1904, it features 30 tunnels that were hand-blasted through rock. Rising towards the Continental Divide – the mountainous spine of North America – provides opportunities for you to step into the vestibule and breathe in the fresh mountain air, and to photograph the dramatic landscapes.
5. View Gross Reservoir in the Rocky Mountains
The Gross Reservoir is on the eastern side of the USA’s Continental Divide. Its water is pumped from the western side, through the access tunnel constructed for workers building the six-mile Moffat Tunnel that slices under the divide. On one side, water flows into the Pacific while on the east it drops towards the Atlantic. The tunnel is named after David Moffat, who invested his fortune in constructing the Denver, Northwestern and Pacific Railway.
6. Spot the Elizabeth Kurtak Art Gallery in Fraser, Colorado
Journeying on the Rockies to the Red Rocks route means you can sit back and enjoy viewing both rural and urban scenery. The route snakes through Winter Park, a Colorado ski resort that in 2006 became the USA’s highest incorporated town. Nearby Fraser is home to historic wooden buildings typical of those constructed by settlers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One such building is now home to the Elizabeth Kurtak Art Gallery (pictured), a local artist's studio and gallery who specializes in watercolor.
7. Enjoy insightful commentary from a Rocky Mountaineer host
Intermittently, the hosts who serve food and drink on board the Rocky Mountaineer also pick up a microphone to highlight points of interest along the route. Their commentary provides fascinating insights into the heritage of the railway line, history of places and details relating to nature and geology. They also receive notifications from crew members in other carriages about wildlife sightings, which can include the likes of bald-headed eagles, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and pronghorns – the fastest mammals in North America, who can run at speeds close to 60 miles an hour.
8. Eat tasty, locally sourced food
The rugged scenery is not the only highlight of the journey. Tasty meals are served to passengers at their seats, with dishes made from locally sourced ingredients, including peach cobbler made with Palisade peaches, beef from local cattle and freshly baked items from Glenwood Springs. The menu is available in the seatback and is explained by the chef, who makes a round of the carriage to take passengers’ orders shortly before the service. The food is paired with regional beer and wine, with options also from elsewhere in the United States.
9. Follow the Colorado River's westward flow
Much of the Rockies to the Red Rocks’ route skirts the USA’s fifth-longest river. On the journey out of Denver, the train picks up the westward flow of the Colorado River near Byers Canyon. At Gore Canyon, the track runs alongside fast-flowing rapids that pose a challenge even to experienced white-water rafters. Elsewhere, the route swings across plains and through steep-sided valleys, including Burns Canyon – named after the trapper and settler Jack Burns.

10. See rugged canyon walls near Dotsero, Colorado
11. Sweep alongside Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon
12. Stay overnight in Glenwood Springs
You’ll stay overnight at a hotel in Glenwood Springs, no matter whether you are heading towards Moab or Denver on the route. That means an opportunity to soak in one of the resort city's hot spring pools. Nomadic Ute people were aware of the healing properties of the geothermally heated, mineral-rich water long before the arrival of the railroad in 1887, which transformed Glenwood into an early wellness destination.
13. See John Henry ‘Doc’ Holliday's headstone
The Rocky Mountaineer has a pre-dawn departure when heading west to Moab, which means you’ll need to visit Linwood Cemetery in Colorado the night before if you want to see John Henry ‘Doc’ Holliday’s headstone. One of the best-known names of America’s Wild West era, Holliday was a dentist turned gambler and gunslinger who participated in the infamous gunfight at the OK Corral. Suffering from tuberculosis, he headed to Glenwood Springs seeking a cure and died here in 1887.
14. Breathe in the morning air near New Castle
Hot coffee and tea is provided on the platform at Glenwood Springs station ahead of the westward journey on the second day, where the rush of cool morning air in the vestibule may also help snap you awake. The hills around nearby New Castle are famed for being the location of a coal fire that has smoldered underground for more than a century. Methane caused an explosion in the Vulcan Mine in 1913. Intermittently, smoke is seen above ground.
15. Experience a golden sunrise over the Colorado River
You won’t regret the early start once you see the sun ascending over the rolling hills that rise into the White River National Forest, which sprawls across 2.3 million acres and has 11 ski resorts. Photographers have long known that the hour after dawn is often rewarded by spectacular imagery and passengers aboard the Rocky Mountaineer get to see why at the beginning of the second day. Water vapour sometimes rises off the Colorado River at this hour, reminiscent of steam billowing from a hot bath.
16. Appreciate geology in De Beque Canyon
17. Roll through Colorado's oldest wine producing region
Most Americans associate peaches with the state of Georgia, yet Coloradans tend to swear that those from Palisade are sweeter and juicier. The area gets its name from the fortress-like Palisade rock (pictured), whose steep sides formed from Mancos Shale. It was at Rapid Creek, near Palisade, that Colorado’s first vineyard was established in 1890, with Zinfandel and Muscat grapes among the varietals planted. Passengers on board the train have the opportunity to sample Coloradan wines while traveling through the area.
18. Cross the Utah-Colorado state border
A modest hand-painted sign marks the site of the Colorado-Utah state border, the white capital lettering daubed on the gently meandering red sandstone of Ruby Canyon. Nearby, indentations in the cliff face provide evidence of Indigenous habitation long before European settlers made their way westward. The marks provided a way of reaching dwellings high above the valley floor. The area remains important to Ute people who were resettled on reservations.
19. Experience the arid beauty of eastern Utah
The train provides unimpeded views of eastern Utah’s arid landscape. On seeing the sun-baked yellow grass, dusty earth and slowly crumbling mudstone cliffs, cartoon fans might be forgiven for thinking that all the scenery is lacking is a not-so-wily coyote chasing a beeping road runner. The inhospitable climate played a role in turning Cisco into a ghost town. It’s now rebounding as a place where artists can express their creativity.
20. Tour rock formations in Arches National Park
The Rockies to the Red Rocks rail journey ends at Moab Train Siding, with the entrance to Arches National Park lying on the way to Moab. Late afternoon is an optimal time to tour the eroded rocks that give the park its name. From the siding, Dead Horse Point State Park lies in the opposite direction along Highway 313. It was there that the scene of the Ford Thunderbird driving into the canyon was filmed for the 1991 movie Thelma and Louise .
21. Go off-road in the hills above Moab
Moab has evolved into a thriving adventure tourism destination. At the outset of the Atomic Age, the surrounding area attracted prospectors and became a hub for uranium mining. Horse riding, river rafting and rock climbing now number among the activities that visitors can try. Off-road driving in buggies and four-wheel vehicles, including Hummers operated by the Moab Adventure Center , offer a way of exploring dusty hills on the edge of town. And dark skies mean that the fun doesn’t stop with nightfall either.

Some worry southern Colorado is being left behind in Front Range Passenger Rail project
COLORADO (KRDO) -- Some southern Coloradans are raising concerns that the lower half of the state is being left behind in plans to build a passenger rail from Pueblo to Fort Collins.
The concerns stem from a bill just introduced into the Colorado legislature to generate funding for the project or at least part of it.
The bill proposes that state rental car fees be raised by two to three dollars a day depending on the rental car type. That money would then be used as a match to get federal grant funding for projects like the Front Range Passenger Rail
State Senate President Steve Fenberg, of Boulder, is the prime sponsor of the bill. He says the goal is to raise funding which can be matched by federal infrastructure grants to really improve transportation resources in the state.
He says prior legislation outlines that the northern part of the railway must be finished first, before work on portions in the southern part of the state.
"We have a small window to bring in these federal funds. We need to do everything we can as a state to ensure a good partnership, and everybody is playing well with each other in the sandbox so that we can show the federal government that we're a good investment," said Fenberg.
However, some, like Jill Gaebler, a member of the Front Range Passenger Rail Board, feel like Southern Colorado is being left behind in the plans.
"I would have liked us to be working together, linking arms, going to the ballot as one line, in advance of trying to find funds for one portion of the line that kind of separates the line and its vision," said Gaebler.
Gaebler said she understands that the northern portion will be built first, but she believes a plan for the railway should include guidance for every part of the line.
She said she wants to see a ballot measure in November so voters can decide for themselves how to allocate money toward the railway, and she doesn't want Southern Colorado to be an afterthought.
KRDO13 reached out to the Governor's Office for comment on the bill:
“The Governor is championing getting train service from Fort Collins to Pueblo and Trinidad and is not supportive of any plan that doesn’t include the entire front range. The state law that created the Front Range Passenger Rail District mandated that the project start with the unfinished NW Rail FasTrack segment that was supposed to be completed in 2017. Governor Polis is committed to working with local, state, and federal partners to secure Colorado’s fair share of historic federal funding to make passenger rail a reality for Colorado, and applauds the work of President Fenberg and the sponsors for their work on legislation to help make that happen.” Spokesperson for Governor Jared Polis

How NYC congestion pricing could impact you after passing today's vote
By Jesse Zanger
Updated on: March 28, 2024 / 9:44 AM EDT / CBS New York
NEW YORK - New York City's congestion pricing plan got final approval from the MTA Wednesday. Here's what you need to know.
What is congestion pricing?
Congestion pricing is a fee to enter Manhattan's Central Business District . It's an effort by the MTA both to ease traffic congestion and raise much-needed funds to support mass transit. New York City's subway system is more than 100 years old and the MTA is hoping that by raising funds from congestion pricing, it will enable them to pursue important projects like revamping the subway signal system, which they believe will improve train service during rush hour and make trains less crowded by running trains closer together. Other high-cost projects the MTA is eyeing include electrifying the bus system, extending the Second Avenue subway and build a new light rail line called BQX for Brooklyn and Queens residents.
NYC congestion pricing map
Here's a map of the congestion pricing zone:
It runs from the southern tip of Manhattan through 60th Street, which encompasses the Queensboro Bridge, Queens-Midtown Tunnel, Williamsburg Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, Hugh Carey Tunnel, Holland Tunnel and Lincoln Tunnel.
What are the fees?
Drivers are being asked to pay $15 toll to enter Manhattan below 60th Street . The toll will be enforced via license plate scanners 5 a.m.-9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on weekends. Motorcycles will pay $7.50 during the day to enter the zone.
Other tolls are as follows:
- Cars: $15 during the day/$3.75 at night
- Motorcycles: $7.50/$1.75
- Small trucks: $24/$6
- Large trucks: $36/$9
- Taxis: $1.25 surcharge per ride
- For-hire vehicles: $2.50 surcharge per ride
- Tour buses: $36
- Charter buses: $24
Drivers coming through the tunnels would receive a credit against the $15 fee.
- Cars: $5 credit
- Motorcycles: $2.50
- Small trucks: $12
- Large trucks: $20
Who is exempt from NYC congestion pricing?
There have been numerous calls for exemptions, particularly for public employees who drive their private vehicles to work, like first responders and teachers. Despite their push to be excused , they were denied exemptions. Under the new system, however, most drivers will nonetheless have to pay the new tolls.
- New York City school buses are exempt
- Commuter vans licensed by the TLC
- Buses providing scheduled commuter service to the public, including long-distance lines like Megabus and Greyhound and regional lines like the Hampton Jitney
- Approximately half of the city's 26,000 vehicles, dubbed "specialized government vehicles," which are needed to perform public work in the Central Business District
- Some drivers who earn less than $50,000
When will congestion pricing start?
The MTA is hoping congestion pricing will start in June, but first it has to contend with several ongoing lawsuits . Court hearings are scheduled for April 3 and 4 in New Jersey, followed by May 17 in Manhattan. Among the various groups who have challenged congestion pricing: New Jersey lawmakers, who filed suit claiming it would be a burden on those in the Garden State . In New York City, small business owners sued claiming an environmental impact study needed to be conducted.
The MTA has pushed back against all the lawsuits - around a half a dozen so far filed in three separate courts. MTA officials have said all of the litigation is effectively hamstringing their ability to make new improvements .

Things To Do
Music | red rocks books a lot of niche bands, and that’s a good thing | opinion, the morrison amphitheater’s busy schedule allows diverse artists to build lasting careers.
Between its sloping silhouette and stunning vistas, Red Rocks Amphitheatre hardly seems to change over the years.
That’s true in some ways. But ever-evolving rules — did you know it was BYOB until 1997? — constant upgrades , and a carousel of new bookings tell another story.
Most of us wouldn’t be expected to know every name on the venue’s 2024 calendar (which begins Saturday, March 30, with a show from Boogie T) . Or even half of them. But that’s what keeps Red Rocks relevant. Skyrocketing demand for concerts at the 9,545-capacity outdoor amphitheater has matched a post-pandemic explosion of touring, combining for a record 200 or so concerts this season, March through November.
With a reputation for hosting the biggest names in music, Red Rocks would seem to demand a certain level of fame. But one needn’t “earn” a Red Rocks spot from some imagined arbiter of taste. A band’s draw — and whatever ticket price the market will bear — has in recent years been far more of a factor than dues-paying when it comes to getting a date, as promoter AEG Presents Rocky Mountains (Red Rocks’ main booker) has acknowledged.
Artists make most of their money on the road these days, and finding a Red Rocks-worthy audience does not require broad, mainstream recognition.
That can be true at any large venue that’s hosting acts such as Lizzy McAlpine, Matt Rife, Wallows and Slander — artists you may not have heard of but who command large and fiercely loyal audiences anywhere they play. They’re all headlining Red Rocks in 2024.
Did The Beatles (in 1964) or U2 (1983) really deserve to be there, years before they became undisputed rock ‘n’ roll royalty? It may seem forgone, but neither of those shows sold out, nor was rock always welcome at Red Rocks; see the 1971 Jethro Tull riot , which kept rock shows from being booked there for the next four years.
Truthfully, the culture of Red Rocks has never been stagnant, despite its long-enshrined spot in Colorado music history . As someone who moved here in 2000, the venue’s character at first seemed defined by John Denver and the Grateful Dead, Colorado Symphony collabs and middle-of-the-road folk-rock. That was projection on my part. Within a few years, I had seen familiar names such as Bob Dylan and B.B. King, but also mind-bending concerts from Radiohead, Bjork, De La Soul, The Flaming Lips, and LCD Soundsystem. The joy and possibilities seemed endless.
Promoters still book the heritage acts, as they’re often called, and they should. Where else would you rather see James Taylor (June 2-3) and Lyle Lovett (July 9), or jam-band legends like Colorado’s own String Cheese Incident (July 12-14)?
But with nearly every available date booked for 2024, and new ones being announced each week , there’s more genre diversity and more niche acts than ever.
Electronic music, which has dominated the venue in recent years, began tightening its grip at least a decade ago with headliners such as Tiesto and deadmau5. Last year, Red Rocks was named EDM Venue of the Year by EDM Maniac , and it was well deserved, thanks to Colorado’s ever-ascendant import in the bass music genre, as well as playing home to mega-headliner Illenium (May 14) and others. Hip hop, trap and reggae continue to have a foothold on the calendar alongside superstar DJs and producers.
And we can only hope to see more variety, with Spanish-language artists, comedians and other non-traditional acts on future lineups.
Ticketing woes aside, Red Rocks has increasingly become a venue that meets music fans where they’re at, even when the bands seem niche. Whether it matches your memories of going there for the first time, or you’re just now having life-changing experiences and setting expectations for future crowds and traffic, you’re living in a music world in which monoculture has shattered.
All it takes to be a crowd-pleaser at Red Rocks is a pleased crowd.
