INOCULATIONS

Yellow fever vaccination requirement for travellers across the frontiers of Ghana

Yellow fever is an acute viral infection transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes. It is endemic and epidemic in several countries in Africa, South America and Caribbean Islands. Case fatality rate is high in classic yellow fever epidemics. There is no curative medical treatment but however highly preventable by vaccination.

In accordance with the International Health Regulations IHR2005 which involves the below:

Article 36 (Certification of vaccination or other prophylaxis)

Annex 6 (Vaccination, prophylaxis and related certificates)

Annex 7 (Requirements concerning vaccination or prophylaxis for specific diseases)

All travellers above nine (9) months old coming into Ghana are required to have been vaccinated against Yellow fever at least Ten days before the proposed date of travel and where already vaccinated the duration of the vaccination status should not be more than Ten years before entering Ghana.

Ghana is one of the countries at the risk of Yellow Fever transmission, hence the need for all travellers (including those coming from countries with no risk to yellow fever) to Ghana to have a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate or records indicating their protection from yellow fever.

As a result, Health officials at all ports of entry carry out vigorous checks on travel documents with respect to Yellow fever vaccination certificates in accordance with Article 36 and Annex 6 as depicted above.

METHOD OF PAYMENT

1. Applicants who make payments through banks other than Danske Bank should be mindful that it may take a couple of days before the transfer is complete. Please note that the issuance of a bank receipt upon completion of your transfer either by self/by the bank is not a confirmation that the transfer has been successful. Money transferred from another bank other than  Danske Bank will attract a transfer charge of 50 DKK. Applicants are therefore advised to pay all bank charges to avoid a  shortage in the application fees.  Any application with a shortage in the required fees will not be attended to. Reciprocity Schedule

Select a visa category below to find the visa issuance fee, number of entries, and validity period for visas issued to applicants from this country*/area of authority.

Explanation of Terms

Visa Classification: The type of nonimmigrant visa you are applying for.

Fee: The reciprocity fee, also known as the visa issuance fee, you must pay. This fee is in addition to the nonimmigrant visa application fee (MRV fee).

Number of Entries: The number of times you may seek entry into the United States with that visa. "M" means multiple times. If there is a number, such as "One", you may apply for entry one time with that visa.

Validity Period: This generally means the visa is valid, or can be used, from the date it is issued until the date it expires, for travel with that visa. If your Validity Period is 60 months, your visa will be valid for 60 months from the date it is issued.

Visa Classifications

Country specific footnotes.

Although care has been taken to ensure the accuracy, completeness and reliability of the information provided, please contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you plan to apply if you believe this information is in error or if you have further questions.

Visa Category Footnotes

The validity of A-3, G-5, and NATO 7 visas may not exceed the validity of the visa issued to the person who is employing the applicant. The "employer" would have one of the following visa classifications:

  • G-1 through G-4
  • NATO 1 through NATO 6

An E-1 and E-2 visa may be issued only to a principal alien who is a national of a country having a treaty, or its equivalent, with the United States. E-1 and E-2 visas may not be issued to a principal alien if he/she is a stateless resident or national of a country without a treaty.  *When the spouse and children of an E-1 or E-2 principal alien are accorded derivative E-1 or E-2 status and are themselves a national of a country that does not have a treaty with the United States – the reciprocity schedule, including any reciprocity fees, of the principal alien’s country of nationality should be used.  **Spouse and children of an E-1 or E-2 visa principal applicant, where the spouse and children are also nationals of a country that has a treaty with the United States – the reciprocity schedule, including any reciprocity fees, of the spouse and children’s country of nationality should be used.

*Example 1: John Doe is a national of Country A that has an E-1/E-2 treaty with the U.S. however his wife and child are nationals of Country B which has no treaty with the U.S. The wife and child would, therefore, be entitled to derivative status and receive the same reciprocity as John Doe, the principal visa holder. **Example 2:  Mike Doe is a national of Country Y that has an E-1/E-2 treaty with the U.S. however his wife and child are nationals of Country Z that also has a treaty with the U.S. The wife and child would, therefore, be entitled to derivative status and receive the reciprocity issued to nationals of Country Z.

The validity of H-1 through H-3, O-1 and O-2, P-1 through P-3, and Q visas may not exceed the period of validity of the approved petition or the number of months shown, whichever is less.

Under 8 CFR §214.2, H-2A and H-2B petitions may generally only be approved for nationals of countries that the Secretary of Homeland Security has designated as participating countries. The current list of eligible countries is available on USCIS's website for both H-2A and H-2B visas. Nationals of countries not on this list may be the beneficiary of an approved H-2A or H2-B petition in limited circumstances at the discretion of the Department of Homeland Security if specifically named on the petition.

Derivative H-4, L-2, O-3, and P-4 visas, issued to accompanying or following-to-join spouses and children, may not exceed the validity of the visa issued to the principal alien.

There is no reciprocity fee for the issuance of a J visa if the alien is a United States Government grantee or a participant in an exchange program sponsored by the United States Government.

Also, there is no reciprocity fee for visa issuance to an accompanying or following-to-join spouse or child (J-2) of an exchange visitor grantee or participant.

In addition, an applicant is eligible for an exemption from the MRV fee if he or she is participating in a State Department, USAID, or other federally funded educational and cultural exchange program (program serial numbers G-1, G-2, G-3 and G-7).

However, all other applicants with U.S. Government sponsorships, including other J-visa applicants, are subject to the MRV processing fee.

Under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Canadian and Mexican nationals coming to engage in certain types of professional employment in the United States may be admitted in a special nonimmigrant category known as the "trade NAFTA" or "TN" category. Their dependents (spouse and children) accompanying or following to join them may be admitted in the "trade dependent" or "TD" category whether or not they possess Canadian or Mexican nationality. Except as noted below, the number of entries, fees and validity for non-Canadian or non-Mexican family members of a TN status holder seeking TD visas should be based on the reciprocity schedule of the TN principal alien.

Canadian Nationals

Since Canadian nationals generally are exempt from visa requirement, a Canadian "TN' or "TD" alien does not require a visa to enter the United States. However, the non-Canadian national dependent of a Canadian "TN", unless otherwise exempt from the visa requirement, must obtain a "TD" visa before attempting to enter the United States. The standard reciprocity fee and validity period for all non-Canadian "TD"s is no fee, issued for multiple entries for a period of 36 months, or for the duration of the principal alien's visa and/or authorized period of stay, whichever is less. See 'NOTE' under Canadian reciprocity schedule regarding applicants of Iranian, Iraqi or Libyan nationality.

Mexican Nationals

Mexican nationals are not visa-exempt. Therefore, all Mexican "TN"s and both Mexican and non-Mexican national "TD"s accompanying or following to join them who are not otherwise exempt from the visa requirement (e.g., the Canadian spouse of a Mexican national "TN") must obtain nonimmigrant visas.

Applicants of Iranian, Iraqi, Libyan, Somalian, Sudanese, Syrian or Yemeni nationality, who have a permanent resident or refugee status in Canada/Mexico, may not be accorded Canadian/Mexican reciprocity, even when applying in Canada/Mexico. The reciprocity fee and period for "TD" applicants from Libya is $10.00 for one entry over a period of 3 months. The Iranian and Iraqi "TD" is no fee with one entry over a period of 3 months.

Q-2 (principal) and Q-3 (dependent) visa categories are in existence as a result of the 'Irish Peace Process Cultural and Training Program Act of 1998'. However, because the Department anticipates that virtually all applicants for this special program will be either Irish or U.K. nationals, the Q-2 and Q-3 categories have been placed only in the reciprocity schedules for those two countries. Q-2 and Q-3 visas are available only at the Embassy in Dublin and the Consulate General in Belfast.

No S visa may be issued without first obtaining the Department's authorization.

V-2 and V-3 status is limited to persons who have not yet attained their 21st birthday. Accordingly, the period of validity of a V-2 or V-3 visa must be limited to expire on or before the applicant's twenty-first birthday.

Posts may not issue a T-1 visa. A T-1 applicant must be physically present in the United States, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands or a U.S. port of entry, where he/she will apply for an adjustment of status to that of a T-1. The following dependents of a T-1 visa holder, however, may be issued a T visa at a U.S. consular office abroad:

  • T-2 (spouse)
  • T-3 (child)
  • T-4 (parent)

The validity of NATO-5 visas may not exceed the period of validity of the employment contract or 12 months, whichever is less.

The validity of CW-1 and CW-2 visas shall not exceed the maximum initial period of admission allowed by DHS (12 months) or the duration of the transition period ending December 31, 2014, whichever is shortest.

The validity of E-2C visas shall not exceed the maximum initial period of admission allowed by DHS (24 months) or the duration of the transition period ending December 31, 2014, whichever is shortest.

Birth, Death, Burial Certificates

Birth certificates.

Fees: Free if the child is registered within 12 months of its birth. After 12 months, the fee is GHC 20

Document Name: Certified copy of Entry in Register of Births

Issuing Authority: Registrar of Births and Deaths of Ghana

Special Seal(s) / Color / Format: Computer generated certificate on green A4-sized paper. Approx. 2cm square 3D holographic security sticker reading CONTROLLER AND ACCOUNTANT GENERAL.

Issuing Authority Personnel Title: Ag. Registrar of Births and Deaths or Principal Assistant Registrar of Births and Deaths. There are currently only four individuals with the authority to sign birth and death certificates.

Registration Criteria: Within the first 12 months of the birth, the parents should present a “weighing card” or “welfare centre card” which is provided at the child’s first well-baby visit with a medical practitioner. If 12 months or more have elapsed since the birth, the parents must present the weighing card, baptismal certificate and parents’ passports.  Persons over 18 years of age must apply in person, present a valid voter ID card and passport as proof of identity, and must be accompanied by a witness who can attest to the applicant’s birth.

Procedure for Obtaining: Records of registrations more than one year old are deposited with the Office of the Registrar of Births and Deaths for Ghana, C/O Ministry of Local Government, P.O. Box M.270, Accra, Ghana. If the applicant resides outside of Ghana, the person applying must present a written authorization from the individual whose birth certificate is being requested. Persons under 18 years of age must have their parent or guardian obtain the certificate. Certificates are usually issued within 10 working days.

Certified Copies Available: Certified copies are available

Alternate Documents: Applicants who are over the age of 60 who have never registered their birth are not eligible to receive a birth certificate and should instead submit an affidavit sworn before a Commissioner of Oaths.

Exceptions: None

Comments: The majority of registrations are not made at the time of birth, and often no registration is made until an individual requires a birth certificate for immigration purposes. Registrations not made within one year of an individual's birth are not reliable evidence of identity or relationship, since any registration, but especially late registrations, may often be accomplished upon demand, with little or no supporting documentation required. Because of the prevalence of late registrations, secondary evidence of birth is often required. Common secondary evidence includes midwife's certificates of birth, “weighing cards” or welfare centre cards, and baptismal certificates. Ghana Health Service provides a Child Health Record (a green pamphlet), and Maternal Health Record (a pink pamphlet) to every infant and pregnant woman as a means of recording medical details of pregnancy and the first year of life.  Some educational certificates, such as the WAEC (a.k.a. WASSCE) record the subject’s date of birth and can be verified by U.S. Embassy Accra.

Death Certificates

Fees: Free if the death is registered within seven days. After seven days the fee is GHC 30.

Document Name: Certified Copy of Entry in Register of Deaths

Special Seal(s) / Color / Format: There is no special seal(s)/color/format

Registration Criteria: A family member must apply in person and present an affidavit from the family head nominating him or her to apply for the certificate, and a certificate from the medical examiner or pathologist naming the medical cause of death. If the deceased died at home, a police report must also accompany the application.

Procedure for Obtaining:  Death records that are more than one year old are deposited with the Office of the Registrar of Births and Deaths for Ghana, C/O Ministry of Local Government, P.O. Box M.270, Accra, Ghana. Certificates are usually issued within 14 working days.

Marriage, Divorce Certificates

Marriage certificates.

Available: For civil, customary, and Islamic (Mohammedan) marriages.

  • Civil marriage (a.k.a. “ordinance marriage”): Fees vary from GHC 200 to GHC 400, depending on the registration office where the application is lodged.
  • Customary marriage: Fees vary from GHC 60 to GHC 100, depending on the registration office where the application is lodged.
  • Islamic Marriage: None.

Document Name:

  • Civil marriage: Certificate of Marriage
  • Customary marriage: Form of Register of Customary Marriages
  • Islamic marriage: Certificate of Marriage

Issuing Authority:

  • Civil and Customary marriages: Registrar General’s Office
  • Islamic marriage: Registrar of Mohammedan Marriages

Special Seal(s) / Color / Format:

  • Civil marriage certificates: Printed on thick, white cardstock paper (approx. 7” x 14”), and are printed in landscape orientation with a horizontal colored band going from left to right; civil marriages concluded at the Registrar’s Office will have a green band, but a civil marriage concluded at a licensed (“gazette”) church will have a blue band. The documents are torn out of a large book and so may appear perforated along the edges.
  • Customary marriage certificate: Looks similar to a civil marriage certificate, but does not have a horizontal colored band.  Once registered with the civil authorities the couple will receive a civil marriage certificate that says "married under customary law" in the space provided for "condition” with an attached certificate printed on white office paper that includes both the ceremony and registration dates.
  • Islamic (“Mohammedan”) marriage certificate: Printed on white office paper and has no security features, but once registered with the civil authorities the couple will receive a civil marriage certificate that says "married under Islamic/Mohammedan law" in the space provided for "condition." For immigrant visa purposes, applicants must submit their civil marriage certificate.

Issuing Authority Personnel Title: Principal Registrar of Marriages

Registration Criteria:

  • Customary Marriage: After the customary rites of marriage are performed, the couple can register at the local Registrar of Marriages in the district where they reside, along with one witness. They will be asked to provide a statutory declaration describing the marriage ceremony and declaring it was made in accordance with their ethnic group’s customary law. The application for the registration of the marriage must be made within three months of the marriage ceremony. The certificate will say "married under customary law" in the space provided for "condition."
  • Civil Marriage: Prior to the marriage ceremony, the couple must make an application to the Registrar of Marriages of the district in which they reside for a Certificate of Notice, the equivalent of a marriage license.  If the couple meets the minimum marriage requirements (both parties consent to the marriage, are over age 21, are free to marry, and at least one party is currently resident in the district), the Registrar posts a notice on the local notice board for a period of 21 days.  If no one comes forward to protest the marriage within 21 days, the registrar issues the Certificate of Notice, which is valid for three months.  The marriage ceremony must be concluded by a licensed official or priest to be considered valid.
  • Islamic Marriage: Islamic marriages should be registered at the Registrar of Mohammedan Marriages within one week of the religious ceremony. The register must be signed by the groom, the bride’s wali (witness or patron), the priest and two witnesses. Islamic marriages can also be registered under civil law with the Registrar or Marriages, but must meet the legal requirements of a civil marriage (see above), and should be concluded by an Islamic priest who is licensed to perform marriages. The certificate will say "married under Islamic/Mohammedan law" in the space provided for "condition."

Procedure for Obtaining: Either party to the marriage can request a certified copy of a marriage certificate in writing to the Principal Registrar of Marriages, C/O Registrar General's Office, P.O. Box 118, Accra, Ghana, or in person at the local Registrar’s office where the marriage was registered.

Comments: Most marriages in Ghana are performed under customary law, and written records are kept only if the couple chooses to register the marriage with the local registrar. Many Ghanaians misconstrue the traditional marriage ceremony as an “engagement.” However, under Ghanaian marriage law, once a “bride price” has been paid, the traditional marriage becomes recognized and lawful.

Persons married under customary law who subsequently wish to marry under civil or ordinance law must obtain a civil marriage certificate which reflects the words "married under customary law" in the space provided for "condition." Polygamous marriage is permissible under Islamic marriage and customary marriage, but not under civil law. Proxy marriages are allowable in customary marriage only, and while the marriage certificate will not indicate that the marriage was concluded by a proxy, the parties to the marriage are required to submit a sworn affidavit to the Registrar General’s Office naming the parties to the marriage, their proxies, and the marriage particulars. The Registrar can verify whether a sworn affidavit was submitted for a marriage certificate where the marriage was concluded by a proxy. Same sex marriage is not recognized in Ghana.  The City of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) keeps an excellent web site with good information on marriage law in Ghana.

Divorce Certificates

Fees:  Depends on the court where the divorce was completed.

Document Name: Divorce Certificate or Decree of Dissolution

Issuing Authority: High Court, District Court, or Circuit Court that granted the divorce

Special Seal(s) / Color / Format: The format varies depending on the local court that issues it. It may or may not be on official letterhead, and may or may not bear the stamp, seal, or watermark of the Ghana Judicial Service.

Issuing Authority Personnel Title: Registrar of the High Court, District Court, or Circuit Court

Registration Criteria: Civil, customary and Islamic marriages should be dissolved by a court of law under the Matrimonial Causes Act of 1971.

Procedure for Obtaining:

  • Dissolution of civil marriages: Documentation of the dissolution of a civil marriage is a decree by a High Court, District Court, or Circuit Court in the district where the applicant(s) resides.  Certificates for the dissolution of a civil marriage may be obtained from the court that granted the divorce, stating that the marriage in question was dissolved.
  • Dissolution of customary marriage : Documentation of the dissolution of a customary marriage is a decree, issued by a High Court, District Court, or Circuit Court along with a statutory declaration by the couples’ families, stating that the marriage in question was dissolved in accordance with customary law. You may find a record of the dissolution of a customary marriage on the reverse of the customary marriage certificate.
  • Dissolution of Islamic marriages:  Either party can register the dissolution of an Islamic marriage at the Registrar of Mohammedan Marriages within one month of the divorce.

Certified Copies Available: Certified copies are not available

Comments:   Affidavits or "statutory declarations" attesting to a divorce under customary law, even when duly sworn, do not constitute proper documentation of the dissolution of a Ghanaian customary marriage. Certificates of divorce issued by courts that are not in the jurisdiction of residence of the applicants should be considered suspicious.

Issuing Authority Personnel Title: Registrar of the High Court

Registration Criteria: Ghana is a Hague Convention Country.  For inter-country adoptions, a new adoption order can only be granted upon completing the adoption steps required by the convention.

Procedure for Obtaining: The adoptive parents or adoptee may request certified copies of adoption decrees from the court which finalized the adoption order by contacting them directly. In many cases, an in-person request will probably be required.

Entry requirements

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Ghana set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Ghana High Commission in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Ghana.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Ghana, your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to visit Ghana.

Applying for a visa

Complete the online visa application form on the Ghana High Commission website and make the online payment.

You need to upload your supporting documents (including a yellow fever certificate) and provide hard copies. Print out the form, add supporting documents and send them by post as directed on the website. The visa processing time is 10 to 15 days.

To get a visa in around 3 days, check if you can use the express service available in person from the Ghana Premium Application Centre in London .

Extending your visa

To extend your stay, take the visa extension form and photos in person to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) office on Independence Avenue in Accra.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Ghana, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination.

For full details about health entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Ghana guide .

Registering with the authorities

If you live in Ghana, you must register with the National Identification Authority (NIA) of Ghana and get a non-citizen Ghana card . You must register all foreign nationals aged 6 years and above in your family who are either:

  • permanently resident in Ghana
  • resident in Ghana for at least 90 days in any calendar year

For more information, see living in Ghana .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Ghana . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into Ghana

You must declare all hard currency, using the declaration form provided on arrival. You can bring in up to a maximum Ghanaian cedi equivalent of 10,000 US dollars.

Do not carry more than 10,000 dollars in value in any foreign currency. The Ghanaian authorities can confiscate the entire amount if you are carrying cash of this value or more.

Dual nationality

Ghana recognises dual nationality. Ghanaian-British dual nationals can register with the Interior Ministry in Ghana and get a dual nationality card. You can produce this card when entering Ghana to show that you do not need a visa.
