Liverpool and how it became the football mural capital of the UK

It is a glorious spring morning in north Liverpool and John Barnes is gazing up at the latest striking addition to Anfield’s growing collection of street art.

Covering the entire end wall of a terraced house on Balfour Street, a five-minute stroll from the stadium he once graced as a player, it consists of two images of Barnes: a close-up of his face — brow furrowed, lips pursed — and another of him unleashing a left-footed shot.

“This is one of the greatest honours I’ve ever received and I don’t say that lightly,” the man himself tells The Athletic . “I’ve been walking past Ian Rush’s mural on the way to matches for ages thinking: ‘I’d love to have one of them’. They’ve depicted me in a nice way.

“When I first came to Liverpool (from Watford in 1987) I could never have anticipated being here as a player for 10 years and still living in Merseyside 36 years later. It’s the people who have kept me here. It’s a two-way relationship based on mutual respect.

“It feels appropriate that of all places, it’s here where it all started for me, so close to the stadium. This is where it should be.”

Barnes’ mural was unveiled on the same day as another on nearby Randolph Street dedicated to Ian Callaghan, the club’s record appearance maker, and Phil Neal, Liverpool ’s most decorated player. They form part of a striking gallery of Liverpool icons dotted around the stadium, including Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson , Jurgen Klopp, Ian Rush, Jamie Carragher, Ray Clemence and Alan Kennedy. All are the work of the Essex-based company MurWalls, founded by Marc Silver in 2019.

liverpool mural tour

They are not alone. In recent years, local businesses have commissioned other artists to embark on similar projects, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah all earning a place in this most unique of open-air galleries.

It all helps make Liverpool the UK’s capital of football murals. Indeed, such is the interest among supporters that there are now three-hour dedicated tours being offered by local firms, which allow visitors to tick each one off, complete with obligatory selfies.

“This city is definitely leading the way,” Silver says. “It’s been going on in other countries for years, especially in South America, but it’s only recently really caught on in England.

“I see this as the modern-day statue. Statues are very expensive and take a long time to do. Murals aren’t as pricey and they’re a great way to honour players. The people of this city, who live and breathe football, have really embraced them.

liverpool mural tour

“It helps that Liverpool Football Club have so many legends deserving of this kind of recognition. We have to be selective because there aren’t enough walls to honour all of them!”

Silver set up his company in late 2019 with the initial focus on offering street art in kids’ bedrooms, but when COVID-19 struck a few months later, going into people’s homes was out of the question, so he had to rethink the business model.

“I always wanted to do the big stuff outside eventually, so we just went for it and Jordan Henderson was the first one we did on that kind of scale,” he adds. “It took off from there. After that, the BBC contacted me and asked us to do the intro to Match of the Day. It went crazy after that.

“Each project is different. The quickest way is to go at night, project the image onto the wall and draw the outline of the design. Then you colour it in. There’s another method with gridding systems. We usually turn them around in two or three days.

liverpool mural tour

“The cost varies, but these were around £5,000 each. You get companies and individuals covering that. Once the legends have signed the wall we get it varnished with a protective coat just in case of mindless vandalism. You hope that doesn’t happen, but you can’t take any chances.”

To find someone willing to have the Henderson mural on the wall of their property, Silver went around the neighbourhood knocking on front doors, but now residents and housing associations come to him asking to get involved. There’s no financial reward up for grabs.

“I got told where to go by a few Evertonians at the start,” Silver chuckles. “They didn’t want Henderson on their wall! But others were massive Reds and were like, ‘Yeah, great, please do it’.

“Every week I get people calling me, saying they’ve seen what we’ve done elsewhere and saying they’ve got the perfect space for one. It’s become a lot easier. From getting an introduction, it’s usually then two or three months of planning and designing before doing it.”

liverpool mural tour

It is not just fans who are enamoured with the murals: the players, too, are huge fans.

“It’s absolutely brilliant. Coming here today I didn’t know what to expect, but I’m so pleased with it,” says Callaghan, who played a record 857 games for Liverpool between 1960 and 1978. Part of England ’s World Cup -winning squad in 1966, ‘Cally’, as he’s affectionately known, was there from the start of Bill Shankly’s Anfield reign right through to the European Cup glory masterminded by Bob Paisley.

liverpool mural tour

Alongside him stands his close friend and former team-mate Phil Neal, who won an astonishing seven league titles, four European Cups, the UEFA Cup and four League Cups between 1974 and 1985.

“It’s emotional,” says Neal, wiping away a tear. “I feel proud and it means much more being up there alongside Cally. He was a man of such achievement. He trained every day with the same desire he showed on a Saturday when he pulled the red shirt on. He was the best pro I was ever around. I came from Northampton Town but this became my home.”

Alan Kennedy, who scored Liverpool’s winning goal in the 1981 European Cup final triumph over Real Madrid , was there on Randolph Street to support his mates.

“These two deserve this. They were winners — so fantastic at what they did,” Kennedy says. “They set the standards for everyone else to follow. They’re shining examples for the current crop and the generations to come.”

An hour later, two streets away, former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore is embracing Barnes, who scored 108 goals in 407 games for the club between 1987 and 1997. The duo are then inundated with photo requests from a throng of excited youngsters decked out in red.

Collymore is there covering the unveiling of the mural for French broadcaster Canal Plus.

“Not only did I get to play with John, not only was he my captain at Liverpool, but he was also one of my heroes as a kid,” he tells The Athletic . “Watching him at his peak was amazing. Some captains can bludgeon you into trying to perform and others try to bring you along and John was definitely the latter. Everyone respected him. When he spoke, you listened.

liverpool mural tour

“This is fully deserved. You see how incredibly popular he is with all the kids and families. He’s still a huge figure of respect in the city.

“There’s a baby over there, only a few weeks old, with a full Liverpool kit on. I go to a lot of cities across the UK and abroad and, coming back here, you forget how football-mad Liverpool is.”

Plans are in the pipeline for MurWalls to add Sir Kenny Dalglish and Roberto Firmino to their extensive collection of murals around the stadium.

“We’ve got people approaching us all the time, saying can you do this one or this one,” Silver adds.

“The most rewarding thing is seeing how the legends and their families appreciate it. And then seeing how the fans love having them around. There are contemporary players who are worthwhile doing as well, but there’s a fine line between a very good player and a real legend. It’s got to be right.”

Top Street Art in Liverpool:

1. baltic triangle:.

The area is known for its connection to the historical docks and warehouses of the city and dotted around the crisscrossing, post-industrial streets you’ll find amazing art giving new life to old walls.

One Instagram capture not to miss is All Liverpool’s Liver Birds which popped up in the Baltic Triangle back in 2017. The huge copper-oxide green wings painted directly on brick by Paul Curtis has seen thousands of visitors and locals flock (pun intended) to pose in front of the outstretched wings and transform themselves into a human-bird hybrid. Even Queen Consort Camilla once made a royal splash joining in on the fun.

Make sure you don’t miss Wedding House on Great George Place where you will find an astonishing 50 ft photorealistic masterpiece. This massive mural by self-taught Brazilian urban artist Liam Bononi was painted in 2020 and captures a personal friend of the artist. Funded by the Liverpool Without Walls Culture Fund , it is a stunning fusion of modernism meets history on a Grade two listed, Gothic building.

3. Grafton Street:

An interactive mural inviting you to pose with the Abbey Road zebra crossing album cover is one not to be missed by Beatles fans. Painted by Paul Curtis, the piece was commissioned in 2019 for the album’s 50th anniversary. Located on the side of the Cains Brewery in the Baltic Triangle area of Liverpool, this immersive work plays with dimension and cascades from the wall to the ground, allowing Beatles fans to get retro and recreate the famous scene.

Go time travelling with a gigantic Back to the Future piece that takes up a whole wall and some unique overlapping letter murals by Snotone are on display.

10 murals around our city and the inspiring stories behind them

From Jurgen Klopp to the Liver Birds there are many stories behind these stunning pieces of art

  • 08:21, 10 NOV 2019
  • Updated 08:08, 18 JUL 2020

liverpool mural tour

On the side of buildings, pubs and some of the city's busiest streets, you'll find vibrant murals - each with their own story to tell.

As a creative hub, it's hardly surprising that areas like the Baltic and Bold Street, have become popular places for artists to paint their murals.

But street art has also become an important part of the regeneration of areas like New Brighton, with artwork as far as the eye can see in the seaside town.

Back in November 2019, we took a look at some of the fantastic murals that have popped up across Merseyside in recent years and the fascinating stories behind them.

Since then, a number of new additions have joined the street art scene, including a laughing Jürgen Klopp , painted on the side of a building on Jamaica Street.

While in New Ferry, artist Paul Curtis is painting five new artworks in a bid to give the town a new lease of life.

Here are some of the stunning murals in Merseyside today.

Jurgen Klopp on Jamaica Street

liverpool mural tour

The mural of Jurgen Klopp on Jamaica Street was painted to celebrate Liverpool clinching the Premier League title after 30 years.

It was created over two days in June, by Liverpool artist Caleb .

The final result shows Klopp’s beaming smile next to the words “We are Liverpool 2020!” and a Liver bird clutching the Premier League trophy.

Speaking to the ECHO about why he decided to paint the mural, Caleb said: “Liverpool have just made history and there’s a great atmosphere in the city at the moment.

“It just needed to be done. Someone had to do it so I decided it was going to be me.”

The artwork, situated next to the now-famous Liver Bird Wings by Paul Curtis, is the latest piece to celebrate Klopp and Liverpool FC’s incredible achievements as World, European and now Premier League champions.

The Liverpool boss has previously been immortalised on nearby Jordan Street by Manchester artist Akse.

LFC mural on Bold Street

liverpool mural tour

In June, another LFC mural was also painted on the side of a building off Bold Street to mark the Premier League title win.

The vibrant artwork in Ropewalks Square, shows players including Firmino and Mane with their arms round one another, as they celebrate the victory.

Dancing with Colours project in New Ferry

liverpool mural tour

Paul Curtis, who painted the popular Liver Birds mural in Liverpool's Baltic Triangle has embarked on a project to transform the look of a town devastated by an explosion in 2017.

Work is currently taking place on the 'Dancing With Colours' murals, which will be painted across six shop fronts on New Chester Road in New Ferry, Wirral.

New Ferry was rocked by Pascal Blasio’s deliberate blowing up of his Homes in Style furniture store on Bebington Road in March 2017.

Residents in the area have secured a successful bid of £5,000 to go towards the new murals, from a £200,000 ‘hardship fund’ provided by Wirral Council for those households affected by the blast.

Local traders are also putting £2,500 towards the ‘Dancing With Colours’ mural project, which is now underway in the area.

Completed at the end of June, a mural of a heart-shaped white cloud now graces the shopfront of mental health charity Gallier House.

The other murals include a beach scene across Sun Junk-e and Simple Credit, a Highland cattle artwork at Edge and Sons Butchers, a 1960s hair dressing scene at Charisma Hair Design and piglets at Boysenberry delicatessen.

Trent Alexander-Arnold in Anfield

liverpool mural tour

The three-storey tall image of Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is emblazoned on a terrace property at the corner of Sybil Street and Anfield Road.

Painted by graffiti artist Akse and arranged by The Anfield Wrap , the mural was commissioned to commemorate The Reds' Champions League winning season - and to inspire other youngsters.

The mural includes a message which reads 'I'm just a normal lad from Liverpool whose dream has just come true.'

Trent , who went to visit the mural for its unveiling in August, had an important message to young people in the city about the mural and what he hopes it will mean to others.

liverpool mural tour

Speaking to the ECHO at the unveiling, he said: "The main message that kids should be picking up from me and my story is that anything is possible and anything can happen - because I was once that kid in a Gerrard or Carragher shirt.

"They were the players who were the local ones in the team and they were the ones who made me feel as though anything can happen.

"It wasn't the players coming in, but the lads who said they were just normal lads in Liverpool and it's just a cycle of being a normal lad and being able to see people living their dream and living your dream.

"Hopefully that's the message the young people are picking up from what's happening."

The mural will be also used to highlight an important community cause - Fans Supporting Foodbanks - and to try and make people more aware of the work they do in the area.

Fans Supporting Foodbanks is an initiative set up by a group of supporters who follow both Liverpool and Everton , which hands out food donations across the city to those in need.

Liver Bird Wings in the Baltic Triangle

liverpool mural tour

There can't be many people who can say that they haven't taken a picture standing in front of the Liver Bird wings in the Baltic Triangle.

It's undoubtedly one of the most popular paintings in the city - and the stunning mural was created by local artist Paul Curtis in August 2017.

Originally a geologist by trade, Paul became an artist after he was made redundant back in 2016.

Since then, Paul has designed work which has appeared across the city on shop shutters, brick walls, advertising hoardings, inside bars - and even in a movie.

Paul Curtis, the artist behind the Baltic Triangle angel wings

But Paul's Liver Bird wings remain popular to his day, as people stop to pose for selfies and transform themselves into an iconic Liver Bird.

Speaking to the ECHO about the wings he said: “When I started designing it, I thought how could I make it unique and settled on the colour and wings of the Liver Bird.

“I wanted to do something people could interact with and make it a bit of fun.”

Abbey Road in the Baltic Triangle

liverpool mural tour

Another one of Paul Curtis's artworks which has proved popular with passersby is this one of Abbey Road.

Known by some as 'Liverpool's Banksy', Paul was commissioned by The Beatles Story to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Abbey Road album.

The artwork can be found on Grafton Street, on the wall of the popular Cain’s Brewery Village.

Police at an incident in Splash on Fazakerley Street Liverpool City Centre

Inspired by the album’s artwork, the mural depicts the scene of the famous London-based zebra crossing used by the band.

Many people have been spotted posing for a picture next to the artwork since its opening in Febuary.

Speaking about the project, Paul Curtis said: “In some ways it is unusual in that without The Beatles , it is simply a suburban street scene, but it is so iconic that people recognise it from just some tarmac, trees and a couple of cars.

“I hope that people enjoy the new work and becoming The Beatles themselves.

“I look forward to seeing all the photos of people just having fun with the backdrop.

“In that sense, it is similar to ‘For all Liverpool's Liverbirds’, the main point is that people enjoy it and that it brightens their day!”

Bill Shankly in Anfield

Artist John Culshaw working on the street art mural of Bill Shankly on The Park Pub.(Pic Andrew Teebay).

A stunning mural of Liverpool FC icon Bill Shankly was painted on the side of the famous Park Pub in September.

Self-taught street artist John Culshaw spray painted the image of the legendary former manager, depicting him holding a red Liverpool scarf on side of the pub, which is just a few steps away from the ground.

Artist John lost his arm as a nine-year-old when he was hit by a speeding car. He was catapulted through the windscreen of the car and suffered appalling injuries.

But he has not let that stop him building up an impressive portfolio of stunning murals in the city.

After John's accident, the Page Moss artist became a painter and decorator, and then a street artist.

Steven Hawking

Graffiti artist Akse, from the P.19 Crew, adds the finishing touches to his tribute to Prof Stephen Hawking on the side of the Liverpool Life Science UTC building on Parliament Street

A mural of Stephen Hawking came to the city in April 2018, painted onto the side of a building on Upper Parliament Street.

The tribute to the world-famous scientist, who died in March last year, was created by French scientist and artist Akse as part of the Contrast Mural Festival taking place in Liverpool at the time.

Alongside the portrait is the quote: "However difficult life may seem there is always something you can do and succeed at."

Artist Akse, said: “I was provided with a wall which belongs to the Liverpool Life Sciences school and I thought that a tribute to Stephen Hawking would be appropriate because it’s a science school.

“I am a scientist myself. I studied an MSc in Chemistry in Manchester so it was also a personal choice.”

Akse, who is from the suburbs to the south of Paris, prefers not to use his real name.

Peter Pan in New Brighton

liverpool mural tour

The regeneration of New Brighton has seen a whole host of different artwork coming to the town - including this beautiful Peter Pan inspired mural.

Wirral-based developers Rockpoint have undertaken a wide-scale regeneration plan in the area, including commissioning artists to paint a series of vibrant murals.

Led by local businessman Danny Davies, the entire project is aimed at developing New Brighton's independent businesses by buying empty and derelict buildings and working on a variety of retail and hospitality 'concepts' to benefit local people, as well as generating footfall from visitors from further afield.

As part of the plans, a series of artworks have also been commissioned from both local and national artists to bring a new life to walls around the neighbourhood.

liverpool mural tour

Speaking about the works, Mr Davies, CEO and founder of Rockpoint, said: “Street art is a fundamental part of our strategy in developing the Quarter.

"These original designs add another dynamic to this buzzy little area - they help reinforce it as a creative hub within the town.

"A number of pieces such as The New Brighton Peter Pan are already becoming a tourist attraction in their own right, and are constantly being photographed for social media channels.”

The Harbour is decorated in bright murals

Alex Marra, director and curator of Art from Alexander, added: "Dan approached me and we started providing street art to the community. What he's doing for the local area is fantastic and inspiring.

"This area has had a lot of neglect down the years, so doing things like this - helping put a positive spin on the area - is very important.

"When we come down here, people always tell us how much the art has brightened up the community, and even inspired people."

Jurgen Klopp in Anfield

liverpool mural tour

Another fantastic mural painted recently by John Culshaw is the giant artwork of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

After spending days painting the design, John unveiled the mural on the wall of Klopp's Boot Room in Anfield back in September.

The artist said: "Yes its a pleasure to work on Klopp because I am a huge Liverpool FC fan.

"I would say he is our best manager since Shankly - he is to us what Ferguson was to United in the 80s and 90s. He is the best thing at Anfield and bigger than any player.

"I obviously want him to stay at the club for as long as possible and this mural is a personal tribute to him from me."

The Beatles in New Brighton

liverpool mural tour

Another Beatles mural was unveiled in September in New Brighton as part of the seaside resort's continued renaissance.

The mural, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Tower Ballroom and the original Beatles poster artist Tony Booth, was unveiled as part of a wide-ranging regeneration programme .

The former music venue, where The Beatles performed on 27 occasions, was iconic until it closed due to fire damage in 1969.

The mural also honours the 100th anniversary of the dismantling of the New Brighton Tower, which was Britain’s tallest building when it was completed in 1898.

liverpool mural tour

By honouring the town’s association with The Beatles and its lively cultural scene in the 1960s, the organisers of the mural on Hope Street, hope to remind the people of New Brighton of their proud past and show them that the area has a bright future.

Alex Marra, the mural project’s Art Director, said: “The mural is a tribute to Tony Booth .

“As a team, we wanted to look at the visuals behind The Beatles and I found out that Tony Booth did all the artwork behind the promotion of the 27 performances (at The Tower Ballroom).

"I got in touch with his family. They’d never given the image rights to anyone, but because they understood the significance of our project they signed the image rights to us for this mural."

The Fab Four in the Baltic Triangle

liverpool mural tour

Another brilliant Beatles mural which was unveiled this summer is also located in the Baltic Triangle.

Based on Watkinson Street, the mural was created by Liverpool-based street artist John Culshaw.

And while the painting is unmistakably of the Fab Four together, the representations of John, Paul, George and Ringo did provoke some comment on social media.

They have been likened to Cast, the Bunnymen - even the Nolans, while McCartney has been said to resemble Pete Wylie, Liza Minnelli, or Cilla Black.

Jamie Carragher

Project highlights, jamie carragher  23 foundation, “it’s big, it’s bold, and we’ve got the colours of both teams in the city on it so it will keep more than half of them happy”.

Jamie-Carragher-Signs-Foundation-Wall-Mural

Jamie Carragher Mural

We were delighted to be invited to create a mural for Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation, the Liverpool legend which stands in Bootle, his hometown. He started the foundation, and he has helped raise over £3 million for various charitable causes across the Merseyside area in the last decade. So, it was decided that this honour was the perfect way to salute all his contributions to charity.

Our team designed the artwork and depicted Carragher lifting high The Champions League trophy from his time with Liverpool in 2005. Next to this stands Jamie as a child wearing an Everton shirt, the team he supported at the time. The caption reads from Bootle to Istanbul. Next, we see two young children in football kit holding hands with their backs on Jamie’s right, clearly showing the shirt numbers nine and six. This is a tribute to the 96 people who lost their lives at the Hillsborough tragedy. One of the children wears the Liverpool kit while the other stands in the Everton kit. Finally, above their heads, the 23 Foundation logo is emblazoned with the words giving kids a chance below.

Pandemic Charity Support

Jamie and his charity worked hard during the pandemic for the people of Bootle and the surrounding areas and provided over 10,000 meals to those in need. It is also important to him to encourage schools and grassroots football which has further enhanced the local community. When speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Jamie spoke with much pride, ‘It’s big, it’s bold, and we’ve got the colours of both teams in the city on it so it will keep more than half of them happy,’ he said with a cheeky smile.

A Bootle Lad Forever

He also spoke highly of his time as a child in Bootle, saying how much he loved the area and the perfect location for this artwork. The area has a significant Liverpool supporters’ community and a prominent Everton supporters’ community, and it is hoped the mural will unite them in more than just football. He said, ‘this is a big thank you to the 23 Foundation for all the work they’ve done over the last ten years or so but more specifically in the previous 12 to 18 months through the pandemic. I am fortunate, and this is a very proud day for my family and me as well. So it’s a big thank you to everyone.’
