The Grand Tour episode 12 is the best in the series so far

The Grand Tour episode 12, coming again from the shores of Loch Ness , focused its attention on a three-way comparison between a trio of British SUVs. An excellent film consisting of the new Jaguar F-Pace, the huge Bentley Bentayga and the ever-present Range Rover .

They weave their way between Austria and Germany, enjoying a route through sleazy towns whose names they might struggle with during their BBC reign, but under their own license, they relish in being naughty. Their lustful journey starts at "Wank" which Jeremy pronounces dutifully using the German enunciation, of "Vank" and they head onto the town of "Fucking". You can sense the teenager still living in all of them – trying not to chuckle, like the day in the back of the classroom when they discovered there was a place in France called "Brest".

It's an interesting trio of cars and they are happy partners in a joyous combined test. The film is enjoyable, the company is entertaining, and the final race between them is stunningly shot and invigorating to watch.

Each of the three cars are fascinating cars in their own way and seeing them on the same scale makes them all the more intriguing. It's worth noting that the top spec F-Pace Hammond drives is cheaper than the extras alone on James' Bentayga.

The engine of the mighty Bentayga is a almighty 6.0 W12 complete with twin turbos. Despite weighing well over two tonnes, it builds speed at a remarkable rate. Slice that engine in half and you have the dimensions of the Jaguar, a 3 litre V6 growler with a supercharger. With aluminium weight saving applied to the Jag’s chassis, it's seriously quick and nimble too. Power and speed is one thing, but little prepares you for seeing these beasts fly and achieve air during their wonderful racing laps.

The Bentayga at first seemed like a clumsy accident, but as GQ accurately predicted at the time of its launch, the Bentley seems to have grown into it.

However, the other two wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the success of the old Range Rover. Let’s not forget, the Range Rover wasn’t designed to attractive a wealthy elite and footballers who wanted chic, understated luxury and prowess on the road – it just happened that those audiences decided to love it anyway. And so all the competitors followed, trying to get a slice of the same audience, now they knew what that audience liked.

This is why the Range Rover is the real winner. It was designed not for a target audience, but for a purpose. To climb any mountain and ford any stream, without sacrificing any comfort or ability on the road. It’s the original. It’s stayed true to its ethos and really can achieve anything off-road, as the Grand Tour trio demonstrated.

The Bentley Bentayga Features In This Week's Episode Of 'The Grand Tour'

Here's what you can expect from the penultimate episode of the first season.

We're only two episodes away from the grand finale of "The Grand Tour's" first season, and we can't help but wonder if the series will go out with a bang or a whimper. The trailer for the penultimate episode, once again set in Scotland for some reason, has been released and it looks somewhat subdued compared to other episodes. That's not necessarily a bad thing, especially for those who complain there isn't enough car content. Again, we wish the location of the tent had some bearing on the content of the films.

Being set in Loch Ness, we predictably get some arguments about the existence of the Loch Ness Monster, but that's about all the context you're going to get. This week's main films are set in Germany and Australia, with a three-way road test between the Range Rover Autobiography , Jaguar F-Pace and Bentley Bentayga around central Europe.

But just in case you were worried it would be a serious road test, there are some dick jokes and explosions to keep you entertained. We know that Clarkson is a long-time Range Rover fan so it will be interesting to see his verdict on the brutish Bentley. Since he doesn't appear to be driving it, you can bet he will brand it as "rubbish" throughout the show. Elsewhere, Clarkson will be putting the underrated Lexus GS through its paces at the Eboladrome and the presenters apparently examine the point of launch control. Judging from previous episodes, that could either be insightful or pointless filler material.

We start in the tent where Clarkson, Hammond and May discuss what’s to come in the episode. It’s a quick introduction which soon moves to Richard Hammond’s piece on the new Aston Martin, the Vantage.

Hammond Reviews The Vantage

We go to the Eboladrome , where Hammond is very complimentary of how the Vantage looks. He also likes the interior, which doesn’t have the usual mistakes of previous Astons. The engine is also brilliant. It’s from AMG, but still works well in the Vantage especially with Aston’s tune on it.

I think it’s safe to say he loves it, despite a few small issues such as visibility, the indicator sound, and there being too much Alcantara. He even admits that it is close to, if not better, than a Porsche 911.

On the Eboladrome by the hands of Abbie Eaton, it gets a time of 1:20.4. That’s exactly the same as a Porsche 911 GT3RS and a BMW M5.

First up is the VW ID R, and how it can corner so fast the driver could blackout due to the lateral G forces. Then, after some joking about fighter pilots, they discuss the Rolls Royce Cullinan and how Rolls didn’t want to give them one due to their fear that they’d call it ‘ugly’.

They’re interrupted by a phone going off, and it turns out to be an alarm for an audience member to pick up their children. They briefly poke fun at her before resuming their chat about the Cullinan.

Next, flying cars. They go through a few examples, but conclude that they’re useless. As are the statistics from Scotland regarding safe driving.

James May has a segment on the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, He takes us through the story of spaceflight, but as this is a car show, he eventually gets to the cars the astronauts would drive. This, in particular, would be the Chevrolet Corvette. James actually drives Neil Armstrong’s Corvette in a spine tingling video.

Clarkson Tests The Citroen C3 Aircross

Clarkson decides to do a thorough test on the everyday Citroen. the first test is ‘can the car go faster than itself?’. A top speed test is done at Milbrook where it gets 115mph. But Clarkson thinks it can do better. He uses the slipstream of a Bentley Bentayga where it eventually does 123mph.

Next, parking. Clarkson concludes that if the car is bigger than the space, then no it can’t park there. But if the space is bigger than the car, then yes it can.

Now, a strength test. Can it pull a 13,000 tonne ship? The car is hooked up to a car transporter, and it needs to drag the ship 25 metres. It actually manages to do it… kind of, so with that sorted out, Clarkson can now look at practicality.

Turns out there’s not a lot of space for kids, even those bought by Angolina Jolie. The boot is just about big enough for a very small horse, though.

For the next test, they’re in France to see if it could work as a police car. A DeTomaso Pantera is being used for an armed robbery, so Clarkson is on the case in the Citroen! After a hilarious chase, the Pantera eventually broke down and was caught by Clarkson.

The final test covers the invasion of Italy. So, Clarkson uses the Citroen to cross the Alps and it turns out that the little car is pretty good off-road.

At the tent, Hammond and May think the tests were awful. They exclaim that the tests were useless, and that there should have been at least a comparison to the Vauxhall equivalent. James offers a better test. How easy is it to vacuum the Vauxhall? Clarkson says he knew he’d bring that up, so gives it to Sir James Dyson (yes, actually) who says it’s very easy!

Here's What Happened To Jeremy Clarkson's Bentley From The Grand Tour Madagascar Special

Once slated for destruction, Bentley and Jeremy Clarkson had other plans for the beloved Continental.

If you're a fan of  The Grand Tour , you've probably seen the Madagascar special . That saw Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond travel across Madagascar to find hidden pirate treasure. And they all bought their own vehicles to get them through the challenge. Clarkson bought a Bentley Continental  from 2014, which he turned into the MFB Continental. But, what happened to the car after it was finished in Madagascar? Was it scrapped? Thankfully, the answer is no.

What Happened To The Bentley MFB After Madagascar?

YouTube channel Grand Tour Nation was able to provide an update on the car and what's happened to it since Madagascar. The Grand Tour partnered with Bentley to modify the car to off-road usage, which was originally a press car. Bentley Motors' Head of Product Communications, Mike Sayer, said the work was very collaborative, and they helped finish the work off at Bentley to make sure that it all worked okay. Clarkson brought it back to the UK after falling in love with it.

Clarkson's Madagascar Ride On The Road To Ruin

But, things got a bit messy as DVLA, which is the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, said it had to be destroyed as it had started out as a development mule. This rule is in place so that designs like this never seep into the production market. So, it looked like it was all over for the rather crazy off-road Bentley just as it arrived on British soil. Clarkson gave it back to the company, after using it on his farm for a period.

Clarkson's Bentley MFB Gets New Lease On Life

Yet thankfully, the car was instead placed on display at Bentley HQ in Crewe (Cheshire, England). Mike Sayer was so impressed by the car and how much punishment it could soak up when it was running through the horrible and tough roads and terrain of Madagascar. It is now displayed within the Bentley factory limits in a glass box that is just viewable from outside the factory on Pyms Lane, a road that goes past the factory. This means that the car has been saved from scrapping, thanks to Bentley being so unbelievably proud of the car that they helped build for the Amazon show.
