Family-friendly adventures & stress free travel
Just because you’ve had kids, doesn’t mean your traveling days are over. We’ll take you to the best family vacation spots and beyond, with family-friendly stays and experiences that will spark the joy of travel, make real connections, and excite the whole family.
Adventure for all ages
Our family getaways feature experiences that keep everyone happy, from little ones to teenagers and adults. Visit the Harry Potter highlights like Platform 9¾, sail around the Greek Islands, become a medieval archer in Ireland or an archery pro in England, learn how to make (and eat!) pizza in Italy, or go ziplining on the slopes of a volcano in Costa Rica.
Enriching experiences
Inspire your family’s sense of adventure and watch your children light up with wonder. The best family vacations are full of pinch-me moments, like staying in an ancient castle in Wales or a ranch in the Wild West of America. Learn about wildlife conservation in Costa Rica, experience life on a family farm in Ireland, or learn about Roman history by transforming into a gladiator!
Taking the stress out of travel
With all the logistics and must-do experiences covered, the only thing you need to worry about is having fun, together. Expect quality stays, luxury transport and plenty of meals included - and that means a whole lot of full tummies and happy faces. Our expert Travel Directors unlock the magic of travel at every turn, so you can focus on making memories and exploring the world together.
All you need to know about Family Tours
How can i travel with my family on a budget.
With kid-friendly accommodation, meals and transport included on our family vacations, you can easily stick to your budget and focus on having fun. We also include all the must-do experiences, and let you know all the optional experiences before your family tour, so you won’t be hit with any surprise costs.
What's the best family vacation destination?
Family friendly vacations can be found all over the world, from the outback of the United States to the jungles of Costa Rica to the islands of Greece. Some of our favorite family vacation spots include Italy, Switzerland, France, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Costa Rica and the United States.
What are good family trips?
The best family vacations include adventures that are fun for the whole family. We love family beach vacations to places like Greece and Costa Rica, historical adventures like experiencing life as a gladiator in Italy, and nature trips like boarding an Old West train to the Grand Canyon.
Why is family travel important?
Travel is one of life’s greatest teachers. From grandparents to kids, everyone will learn new skills and discover a world of cultures and new ideas while spending precious time together, like only family vacations can bring. Your journey will also inspire a sense of wonder and connection for all, and we think that’s one of the most valuable things you can have in life.

Family Tours
Family trips built for adventurers of all ages.
Just because you’ve settled down and had kids doesn't mean your adventuring days are through. Family tours explore exciting locales — Tanzania, Thailand, the Galápagos, Peru Europe and more — with age-appropriate activities and hotels that know how to cater to families on the move.
A new line of trips for adventure-loving families in search of a meaningful way to discover the world together.
A big world, brought down to size
Family edutainment.
Family trips introduce kids to the inner workings of other cultures through language, sports, crafts, and time with experts that bring what they’ve learned in school into real life.
The more the merrier
The average Family group consists of about 12 people, typically three or four families from all over the world and with kids around the same age as yours.
Small travellers, big fun
If one family member isn’t having a good time, nobody is. We give each Family tour a Recommended Age rank so parents can tell if it'll be a good fit for their kids before they go.
Together, the Robertses discovered a new theme park: "Thailand"
As working parents, Dan and Hayley are all too aware that the time they have together with their kids is at a premium. They were in the market for something special; an experience they could all enjoy that would also broaden the horizons of their sons Keir and Tigne. They were looking for an experience that all four of them would remember for the rest of their lives. They found it in a place they never suspected: on a Family trip through Thailand.
Watch the Roberts' story
“ We went to this little village in Thailand where people grow their own food. Our CEO showed us how to separate the rice from the husk so it can be turned into food. It was cool to see how the food we ate got from the ground to our plates. ”
The Robertses discovered a new kind of theme park: Planet Earth
Learn now, appreciate forever
Travelling is the perfect way to open up a child’s world to possibility and wonder. Powerful experiences lead to new interests, and exposure to different cultures, languages, and environments helps the kids of today become the responsible, well-rounded adults of tomorrow. Our Family trips deliver a seamless mix of adventure and education that’s so much fun they won’t even realize they’re learning something the whole time.
“ Our group had kids from Canada, Germany, and Australia in it, which was pretty cool. It was great to have kids who weren’t my brother to hang out and do stuff with. ”
Pen-pals for life
One of the advantages of group travel is the diversity of people you get to share your experience with. Family trips are a great way for children to meet and interact with other kids from around the world who are close to their own age and share common interests. It’s not uncommon for families who meet on our trips to stay close after the trip ends; some even make the experience an annual tradition.
Built just for families
“ We’ve got two kids of different ages and completely different interests, so finding a trip that we could all get something out of was a challenge. I thought it was wonderful that our trip had activities that we could all do together, as well as some tailored to the ages of the kids in our group. ”
Built for families
Travelling with the family is an adventure unlike any other, in all sorts of ways. Kids often have wildly different needs than adults, which is why we don’t just adapt our grown-up itineraries for smaller travellers. Little things like age-appropriate activities, hotels with amenities designed for families on the go, and CEOs that think like kids and adults alike are just a few of the things that set our Family trips apart. We believe that everyone deserves to have the time of their lives, no matter how old they are.
See it how the they saw it
The Robertses explored the wonders of the Thailand with us for just 12 days, but the memories they made will last them the rest of their lives. What will your kids remember? Start making better memories today.

Celebrating 20 years in enriching guided family travel
When we launched Tauck Bridges in 2003, we had one goal in mind: to craft guided family-oriented trips that every age and generation would enjoy experiencing together. Shared enrichment is the watchword of our family brand and each of our trips is designed to show families the world differently than anyone else.
Unlike travel companies that offer separate programs and activities for kids and adults, our family guests experience the fun together, not apart. Each journey is led by a dedicated Tauck Director hand-picked for their experience with family travelers and for their passion and expertise in travel. They take care of all the day to day travel details of every trip, even tipping, so that families are free to experience the joys of travel without any of the work– or the worries.
Fully planned and all inclusive
With a knowledgeable Tauck Director leading the way, everyone can feel like a kid again. Enjoy activities designed for family fun and shared enrichment, as you experience the essence of the destinations you explore together.
Memorable Experiences
Imagine visiting the Louvre and the Sistine Chapel, after hours, without crowds. Or snorkeling with seals near tropical islands time forgot. You can ride gondolas, vintage Fiats, horses, and a special Ice Explorer; flightsee over an Alaska mountain and Lake Powell; and learn to waltz in a private Viennese palace. All included and all awesome to experience with your family.
Milestone Moments
From birthday, anniversary and graduation celebrations to family reunions for the whole clan, Tauck Bridges marks the occasion with unforgettable experiences and meaningful moments you'll long remember.
Closer Connections
Travel has a way of bringing the world closer, bridging generations and cultures like few experiences can. To foster connections with the people and places of the destinations your family will discover, you'll cook with chefs, saddle up with cowboys, meet schoolchildren in Peru and the Maasai in Tanzania, and more, sharing memories that last lifetimes.

Frequently asked questions about our family travel packages
While all of our tours are family friendly, Italy, England, France, Greece, and the U.S. National Parks are our most popular destinations for families. Here are a few family friendly vacations that we recommend:
- London, Paris & Rome: You can see the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, visit Versailles Palace, explore the Colosseum, and drool over delicious pizza and pasta together.
- The Greek Islands: Relax together in Mykonos, see the stunning coastline in Santorini, and learn all about the characters of Greek mythology like the Minotaur and Zeus.
- A City Stay tour: Live like locals. Our City Stay experiences offer families the chance to go at their own paces, while having access to a guide whenever they need it.

If you’re coming from the U.S. and looking at family travel packages to other countries, yes. However, if you’re looking at our family friendly vacations to U.S. National Parks or our Wild Alaska Cruise , you’re in the clear. If you’re traveling from Canada to the U.S, you will need a passport. If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
None of our tours are specifically for families, but you are always welcome to bring your family on them! Whether you’re traveling with your cousins, parents, children, or grandchildren, our tours are perfect for families of all kinds. Just know that children must be at least 7 years old to travel with us, and some tours may not have other families on them. Learn more about our private and customized tours .
Most optional excursions will be available for purchase prior to your tour, online, or over the phone, as well as on tour.

Why choose Intrepid
Just for families
The clue’s in the title. These trips are for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re travelling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount off the price of their trip.
Travel with other families
Travelling the Intrepid way is a bit like travelling with a group of friends. These trips are made up of 3–5 like-minded families, and the kids tend to hit it off straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well-earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.
Small group sizes
Intrepid’s family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places, but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.
Action packed
We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained. So we’ve planned in advance. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. Your local leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or school curriculum.
Safety first
Our leaders are specially trained to run family adventures, so you’re well taken care of. You can also rest easy knowing we conduct safety assessments on all our activities to meet local standards as well as our own comprehensive safety policy.
Sustainable travel
We strive to use travel as a force for good. That’s why we choose to give back to the communities we visit, carbon offset all our trips and take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously. We’ve been officially certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid Travel, you can rest assured you’re travelling to improve the planet.
Highlights of Europe
Incles Valley, Andorra
Sandwiched in the mountains of Catalonia and the South of France, Andorra is the prettiest little European country your kids have never heard of. A week of biking, hiking and white-water rafting culminates in the Incles Valley, where wildflowers, trout fisherman and a mesmerising lake deliver the photo opportunities.
Amalfi Coast, Italy
Nothing says ‘Holiday in Europe’ like the postcard-perfect cliffs of the Amalfi Coast. While the adults are lured by ancient Pompeii and the quality of the seafood scialatielli , little ones bask in the novelty of the funicular, hydrofoil or kayak. You can even make your own gelato with an Italian ice-cream pro.
Blue Lagoon, Iceland
Iceland is pretty hot right now, both literally and metaphorically. Reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius and set in a black lava field, the Blue Lagoon is not your ordinary bath. Great for the skin and perfectly set up for a family visit, it’s one of Iceland’s many must-visits.
Dalmatian Coast, Croatia
Other than being the birthplace of the world’s coolest dogs, Dalmatia is where large chunks of Game of Thrones was filmed. Throw in flawless beaches, ancient ruins, wineries, olive groves, rustic Dalmatian cuisine and some old-world romanticism, and you’ve got the ideal family holiday.
Fun and games in Europe
Be a gladiator in Rome, Italy
Step back into Imperial Roman times and master the basics of gladiator combat. An excursion to a Gladiator School has you decked out in full costume – tunic, belt, gloves and sword – as you try your hand at this legendary pastime. Meanwhile, members of the Historic Group of Rome will school you in Roman history.
Tour a donkey farm in Croatia
The Peljesac peninsula is one of Croatia’s most talked-about gastronomic hotspots. Visit a working donkey farm in Ston for a behind-the-scenes look at how donkey milk – a precious commodity for its medicinal properties – is produced. Follow it up with a lunch of sumptuous Peljesac cuisine in the accompanying restaurant.
Explore the Postojna Caves in Slovenia
Underground caves with dance arenas in them aren’t something you see every day, but that’s Slovenia for you. The Postojna Caves are the second-longest cave system in the country, full of eerie karst stalactites and all kinds of halls and galleries. This awesome labyrinth can also be explored by train.
Where we stay
For our continental adventures, we like to stay in small, locally run hotels where hospitality is key and family-friendly facilities are available. Fortunately Europe has plenty of beautiful old buildings and character-filled properties to choose from.
Learn more about our accommodation
Scenic guesthouses in Iceland
In the land of fire and ice, spectacular scenery is never far away. At our guesthouses it’s right on your doorstep. Featured on both our summer and winter Iceland family holidays, this place has volcanic cliffs on one side and ocean on the other, plus sheep and horses roaming about for good measure.
Central hotels in Italy
In the popular holiday hotspots of Italy, location is key. That’s why we stay in central accommodation perfect for each destination, whether it’s just a two-minute walk from the beach or a stone’s throw away from Old Town.

7 Companies You Can Trust for Great Family Vacation Packages
Updated January 9, 2023
Planning a successful family vacation is work—but not if you let a packager do the work for you. Buying a vacation through a tour operator frees you from the tedious details of deciding where to stay, what to eat, when to visit each attraction, and how to get to each place. Travel packagers take care of all the logistics, and truly expert ones know their destinations deeply, so their inside knowledge may even be able to provide you with special perks. We like these seven tour operators’ family trips—they cover a variety of destinations, styles, group sizes, and prices, and they have proven themselves with families over the years.
Austin Adventures keeps groups small: It aims for a 6:1 guest-to-guide ratio and vets those guides for charisma, making sure the leader has a personality kids will want to follow. Family groups explore Europe, New Zealand , Latin America, and North American national parks (a company specialty). Austin excels in outdoorsy outings such as horseback riding, glacier trekking, kayaking, and bicycling (always on trails, never on highways). The company strives to add excitement with what it calls unexpected “wow moments”—like the reward of ice cream and brownies served after a hike to the top of Angels Landing in Bryce National Park. Many trips follow a 6-day/5-night schedule plan, although international tours are longer. On departures for families with teens, expect more pedaling, paddling, and hiking to panoramic views, such as in the San Juan Islands , Yellowstone National Park , and the Kenai Fjords region.
Kids’ ages: 6–12 (Alaska: min. age 7); 13+ for family teen trips Group size: 12–18
Tauck , founded in 1925, launched Bridges in 2004 to cater to the family market through deeper cultural experiences. In Rome , visit the Sistine Chapel after hours without herds of tourists (pictured); in Cusco , Peru, make chocolate; and in London , zoom along the Thames in a speedboat. On Tauck’s increasingly popular European river boat family departures (the company owns its own vessels), visit multiple destinations but unpack only once. In port, you and your kids bike through the countryside, learn to make marzipan, and visit a Camargue ranch to meet cowboys and their legendary white horses. On board, kids fly kites, cook with the chef, and learn local phrases. For cruises, Tauck adds three guides and a family host to the ship’s standard staff. For land trips, one driver/escort leads.
Kids’ ages: 8–17 Group size: 40 (up to 130 on river cruises)
Originally known as R Family Vacations and rebranded as KelliGregg Travel in 2022, this inclusive company gears trips toward LGBTQ+ travelers and their kids, friends, relatives, and allies. In addition to expanding its offerings for grown-ups, KelliGregg continues to organize its summer highlight under the R Family banner: a big cruise featuring show tunes, LGBTQ+ comedy acts, family dance parties, theater camp, outdoor adventures, and a lot more.
Kids’ ages: any age Group size: varies per trip type
There’s something special about having a friend in a foreign destination. Thomson Family Adventures creates that connection with Friends Across Borders, a digital pen pal initiative available for families who book many of its trips. Your kids correspond ahead of time with local children whom they then meet during the journey. In places with scarce internet and computer access, ground partners personally print and deliver messages. The goal is to immerse kids in the culture, whether it's through activities such as swimming with whale sharks in Baja , sailing in Ireland , or hiking in the Andes (pictured). Some trips cater to families with teens or multigenerational participants. On departures with more than eight people, a Rafiki (Swahili for friend) travels along to keep the kids engaged. Trips always have one driver and one guide.
Kids’ ages: 8–16 typically (some trips accept younger kids) Group size: 8–12
Among the more than 50 itineraries in over 40 countries visited by Adventures by Disney , you can count on getting hands-on local experiences, guides with a gift for storytelling, and time built into the schedule for parents and kids to be both together and apart. You and your children might craft bento boxes at a Japanese cooking school, try archery at a Scottish estate, and learn hurling in Ireland. At other times, adults might sample wines at a vineyard in Tuscany while kids are taken to pick herbs for infusing olive oil. During adults-only dinner nights, kids grab a meal and watch a Disney movie. Daily activities are focused on local culture, not Disney characters—although you may expect a few surprise appearances from those along the way. Tours of Southern California grant private access to the Walt Disney Studios & Archives and Jim Henson Studios, which are normally closed to the public. In Europe, Disney partners with AmaWaterways for river cruises. Overall, many ABD trips are 8 days/7 nights, but the company also operates shorter Escapes that can be booked on their own or added to an itinerary.
Kids’ ages: 6+ (though kids as young as 4 may be allowed depending on the trip) Group size: 38–40
The Sierra Club , one of the oldest U.S. conservation organizations, calls its trips “adventures for a cause.” By leading organized rafting, hiking, canoeing, and volunteering vacations for families, the Sierra Club connects kids to the outdoors, hoping to turn them into future protectors of the environment. Family excursions explore the United States: Wind down rivers in Utah, Oregon, and Idaho (pictured); or base your brood at an Adirondacks’ lodge for hiking, canoeing, swimming, and mountain biking. On service trips you might do things like clearing trails in the Tahoe National Forest or working with animals on a Pennsylvania farm. On Sierra Club Outings, the naturalist leaders are volunteers.
Kids’ ages: 6+, depending on the trip Group size: 12–15 (up to 24 for raft trips)
National Geographic Family Journeys (in partnership with G Adventures) were launched in 2020 as a subset of Nat Geo's 300 or so vacations for a general audience. These family-specific itineraries are developed alongside experts such as scientists and researchers, who emphasize sustainability and supporting local culture. On these trips, you and your kids might taste-test noodles cooked by teens learning culinary arts in Hoi An, Vietnam (pictured); plant seedlings at a tree nursery in Costa Rica; or fashion your own Carnival mask in Venice . Pre-departure, parents receive field guides with advice on sparking children’s interest in the area, and kids get tips on photographic storytelling. Two “Chief Experience Officers” (aka enthusiastic guides) lead families through the 8- to 13-day itineraries in Vietnam, Cambodia, Iceland, France, Costa Rica, Peru, Alaska, and other adventurous places.
Kids’ ages: 7–17 Group size: 20

Amalfi Coast: Pompeii & Pizza Family Holiday
I wouldn’t change a thing. This was our first overseas trip with kids (8 &11) so we were a little trepidatious. Exodus travel had everything planed out perfectly. It was the right blend of incredible activity and free time. Our guide Savy always had an amazing 6th sense for just when the kids needed an ice cream recharge. 2 Tori in Agerola was a great place to stay and beautiful. It’s just above all the craziness of the coast but still very convenient. Not having to drive in Naples and the Amalfi coast yourself is probably worth the cost lol.

It was FANTASTIC!! I would recommend this tour to anyone. We were so happy to have Steve as our tour guide.
Britain and Ireland Delight (Summer, 8 Days)
It was great experience for us!
Best of Ireland and Scotland (15 Days)
Our guide Michelle was excellent. The city sightseeing tours on the bus were a waste of time. Our local tour guide in Edinburgh was awful. Why the laughing through most of her talking? Very irritating. The Fish & Chips dinner in the local dumpy restaurant was the worst meal of the trip. Otherwise just what we expected.

The travel director (Emmo Laing ) was an excellent guide (knowledgeable, responsible ,..) He managed the tour in the best way he could. The Driver ( Alex) did a perfect job. And the group of people that we traveled with was very friendly and lovely group which made that travelling more memorable.

Tours That Are Surprisingly Great for Teens and Their Families
These guided tours hit the sweet spot when it comes to traveling with teens..
The Scoop: What to Know About Trafalgar Tours
Spending time together is a defining feature of a family vacation. However, if you’re the parent of a teen, you probably know that hanging out with parents is not always atop their wish list. When my now young adult children were teens, they vacillated between wanting me to read them bedtime stories one minute to minding my own business the next. The push-pull towards independence is a delicate dance; acknowledging this as you plan your vacation can benefit the entire family.
While there’s no magic wand when it comes to traveling with teens, guided group vacations can hit the sweet spot, and some teen-friendly tours stand out among the choices. With other teens likely to be on the trip, there’s built-in peer companionship. Tour leaders not only handle tedious details, they’re the ones who tell teens what time to be ready each morning and when to have supper, potentially alleviating at least some of the conflict that can arise when parents tell autonomy-craving teens what to do.
OUR TOP PICKS: 15 Best Tour Companies
While teens are as diverse as any age group, action-packed adventures and scenery worthy of posting on social media are often at a premium, something the following trips all provide. Read on for seven hassle-free itineraries that should excite even tough-to-please teens. These teen-friendly tours have all the ingredients for a great family trip.
Intrepid’s Morocco Family Holiday
Riding camels over sweeping sand dunes and camping under the Sahara’s starry skies may sound like scenes lifted from an action movie but it’s a reality on the Intrepid tour Morocco Family Holiday . This small group trip dives into the sights and sounds of this beautiful North African country. There’s variety woven into each day, from exploring cities like Marrakech, Fes, and Casablanca to soaking in stunning natural features, from the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Desert.
FAVES FOR FAMILIES: Best Tour Companies for Families
It’s a sensory immersion as you sip fresh mint tea, eat lunch in a mudbrick Kasbah, and bargain at a bazaar. Participant Eli Gruen, age 17, said “This trip was such a cool way to explore such a fascinating part of the world. From the medinas to the Roman ruins, I experienced so many great moments and had lots of laughs with the others in our group. One highlight for me was playing soccer in the streets of Meknes at dusk with our tour guide’s family!”
- Average group size: Maximum of 16 participants
- Starting price : $1,134
- Length: 10 days, 9 nights
- What’s included: nightly accommodations, daily breakfast, four dinners, two lunches, all scheduled activities, airport transfers, transportation within Morocco
- What’s not included: Airfare to Morocco, meals not on the itinerary, add on activities, tips for your guide
Costa Rica Family Experience with G Adventures
Curated in conjunction with National Geographic, Costa Rica Family Experience with G Adventures immerses nature-lovers in this country’s lush flora and fauna for an educational experience that can’t be found in a classroom.
THE SCOOP: What to Know About G Adventures
Though children as young as six may participate in this kid friendly guided trip, the many active-as-you-want-to-make-them options makes it a particularly good tour for teens. Experienced guides, known as CEOs, which stands for chief experience officers, are with you throughout. CEO Grace Guerrero says “This trip is a great balance between adventure, nature, and cultural connections. Teens will have a chance to experience horseback riding through the forest and end up at a spectacular waterfall for a swim, plus zipline across canyons. They will also have the opportunity to volunteer at Monteverde Institute and be part of the reforestation program.”
Get hands-on as you learn to make tortillas for a meal at the home of a local family. And as part of this travel program, you’ll also get plenty of chances to view wildlife, from iguanas to monkeys. There’s lots of free time built in to this itinerary, so teens who crave a moment to kick-back, perhaps at a gorgeous beach, will be satisfied.
- Average group size: 18-20, with a max of 22
- Starting price : $2,699
- Length: 9 days, 8 nights
- What’s included: 8 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 dinners, nightly accommodations, transportation between destinations, many activities
- What’s not included: Airfare to Costa Rica, any meals not listed on the itinerary, a few optional activities
Canadian Rockies with Adventures by Disney
If you think Adventures by Disney guided tours are all about costumed characters and amusement rides, you’d be mistaken. The selling point is being in the skilled hands of Disney, a company that understands how to have vacation fun like no other. If you’re traveling with an energetic teen, I can speak from personal experience that the Canadian Rockies trip won’t disappoint.
My son Alec and I took this trip when he was 17. Starting in Calgary, we biked, hiked, and paddled our way across majestic mountain landscapes. Standout experiences included stepping over the edge of a glass-bottom platform on the Glacier Skywalk Excursion, visiting the largest body of ice in North America at the Columbia Icefield, canoeing on the emerald-colored waters of Lake Louise, and a float trip down the Bow River.
EXPERT STORYTELLERS: The Secret to Adventures by Disney’s Magic
Alec says “I loved everything about this trip, including snow in June! We stayed at historic hotels, like the Fairmont Banff Springs, where the breakfast buffet even had Asian options.”
- Average group size: 30-40 guests
- Starting price : $6,349 per adult, $6,009 per child age 11 and under
- Length: 7 days, 6 nights
- What’s included: 6 breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 4 dinners, upscale nightly accommodations, transportation during the trip, arrival and departure transfers, activities
- What’s not included: Airfare, alcoholic beverages, gratuities for your guides
Teenagers in Paris: The City of Lights with Road Scholar
Skip-gen travel—grandparents traveling alone with their grandchildren—is trending. And educational non-profit Road Scholar helped pioneer this style of family travel years ago when they created Grandparent-Grandkid group adventures.
Teenagers in Paris: The City of Lights with Your Grandchild is crafted for teens age 14-17. You’ll travel with a small group of grandparents and their teenage grandchildren, hitting bucket-list Parisian destinations such as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. Board a motor-coach one morning for the two-hour ride to visit Impressionist painter Claude Monet’s house and garden in Giverny. There are experiential components perfect for teen travel: I’m thinking of examples like a hands-on chocolate making class and a French language lesson with artists in Montmartre.
Past participant Chloe Knittel, age 17, says “I had such a great time. My group and I had such a strong bond by the end of the trip. My leaders were amazing. This trip was very educational and informative, while also being very fun!”
- Average group size: 13-24 participants.
- Starting price: $3999 per adult and $3099 per child
- Length: 9 days, 8 nights
- What’s included: Accommodations, 17 meals, gratuities, scheduled activities
- What’s not included: Additional meals, trip cancellation insurance, flights
Trafalgar’s National Parks and Native Trails of the Dakotas
For a family tour with teens who want to learn more about North America’s Indigenous Peoples, the Trafalgar itinerary National Parks and Native Trails of the Dakotas is a standout choice.
You’ll visit Pine Ridge, Rosebud, and Standing Rock reservations and meet members of these Tribal Nations, who share their personal stories. This unfiltered tour doesn’t sugarcoat the history or reality of contemporary life on the reservation, where poverty, unemployment, and addiction are widespread. Teens will have a window into the traditions of the Tribal Nations through DIY experiences such as learning to make tea from wild herbs.

For the teens who were on my tour last summer, a morning spent with local teens who frequent the Lakota Youth Development program was a highlight. They performed an original play that amplified the intergenerational trauma they face and spoke frankly about their struggles, hopes, and dreams.
Stops at national parks including Badlands, Mount Rushmore, and Theodore Roosevelt, make for a well-rounded itinerary.
- Average group size: 45
- Starting price: $3,072 with a 10% discount for guests under 18.
- What’s included: Daily breakfast and many additional meals, including several on reservations, activities, overnight accommodations, motor-coach transportation
- What’s not included: Flights, gratuities for your guide and driver
Tauck’s Red Rocks & Painted Canyons Tour
America’s national parks are a treasure chest. Share the wonders of nature’s handiwork in the western United States with your teens on Tauck Tours ‘ spring and summer Red Rocks & Painted Canyons tour .
Starting in Phoenix, you’ll journey to the Grand Canyon, Bryce, and Zion National Parks, where you’ll sample activities from horseback riding to a float trip on the Colorado River. A flightseeing adventure over Lake Powell and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is fun for adventurous teens. The trip ends in Las Vegas, where bright lights and bling will be abundant.
AWE CLOSER TO HOME: Best U.S. Tours This Year
Genifer Katz took the trip with her family and says “Riding mules in Bryce Canyon was so much fun! I loved watching my oldest son laughing up the mountain with his Grandma. Norway’s Arctic Circle Region: Myths and Marvels in Helgeland Journey with Up Norway
Not every teen wants to travel with a group of strangers. If your family group prefers to vacation without a group but with logistical assistance, consider an independent tour with plenty of teen-appeal. Your family will have the assurance of round-the-clock, on-the-ground assistance combined with the flexibility and freedom that are hard to get with group travel.
Inspired by Norwegian folklore, the Norway’s Arctic Circle Region: Myths and Marvels in Helgeland Journey will have you cruising along pristine fjords and learning about the indigenous Sami People. Over-scheduled teens will get a taste of life in rural Norway, where slow living takes precedence.
Torunn Tronsvang, founder of tour operator Up Norway, says “Based on the Helgeland Myth, this journey offers family adventures like fishing, hiking, snorkeling, arctic surfing, kayaking, and climbing. Teens gain insight into sustainable lifestyles, exemplified by experiences like cruising on an electric boat and enjoying farm-to-table meals.”
- Average group size: This trip is independent
- Starting price : $5,021
- Length: 12 days, 11 nights
- What’s included: Many meals, accommodations, transportation within Norway, all planned activities
- What’s not included: Airfare to Norway

How a Group Tour Changed My Whole Approach to Travel
When my vacation plans changed at the last minute, I finally decided to try a group tour for the first time.
Ask a Tour Guide: What Surprises First-Time Tour Travelers?
Here's what longtime tour guides say delights and surprises first-time tour guests.
The Best Family Vacation Ideas: Types of Trips For Families
F amily vacations are important for your family, but it can always be a challenge to decide when and where to go. Budget is obviously a major consideration, and as kids get older, time becomes more and more limited. So, you’ll want to make sure that you maximize your time by going to the best place possible. If you are looking for family vacation ideas, this post is a good place to start.
When my family is considering which destinations to travel to, we consider a variety of things. I have a family travel bucket list that I work from and using factors like budget, weather, and time available, we determine where to go. If you are building up your list, you may need some family travel inspiration.
This list of types of trips that every family should take can definitely help. Keep in mind that these don’t need to be big vacations. You can staycation to your nearest city for the day, visit a local theme park as part of a road trip, or head over to your nearest National Park for a quick trip.
Of course, if you prefer to do the same type of vacation each time, that is totally fine too. This is just a list to help you develop family vacation ideas for your bucket list.
Considering a trip to Europe? Here are some tips for how to plan a trip to Europe that is great for the entire family.

Family Cruise
It’s no surprise that I love cruising, because it’s a great way to see multiple destinations, and can be very relaxing. If you haven’t cruised before, consider a short family cruise, like the 3-day Disney Dream trip we took as our first family cruise.
You can also combine a short cruise with another type of trip, such as a theme park vacation or a city vacation. With activities already organized for you, and meals all prearranged, cruising truly does feel like a vacation from responsibilities.
When looking at various cruise itineraries, you’ll have lots of options. Look at the amenities on the ship, as well as the ports of call that you’ll be visiting. While you may associate cruising with warm weather, remember that there are cooler weather Disney cruises, like Alaska, Canada, or Northern Europe.
We’ve loved our cruises on the Disney Cruise Line. I’ve been on all five ships, and while the Disney Fantasy is my favorite, I’ve enjoyed sailing on all of them.
Family Resorts
There are so many family-friendly resorts offering water parks, outdoor pools, fun activities, beach access, kids’ clubs, and so much more. For some great quality time with your family, you may consider staying at a family-friendly resort where you can spend much of your time. All inclusive resorts are a great option, but there are other great options as well.
One of the best family vacation spots, in my opinion, is Beaches Turks and Caicos . This all inclusive resort in Providenciales Turks and Caicos is the perfect place for a family vacation. It’s a popular destination, so be sure to book your stay well in advance.
Theme Park Family Vacation
Theme park trips are so fun for families, especially for those with younger children. My kids now love rides, but when they were younger, they really liked seeing characters. Seeing the magic of a theme park through a child’s young eyes is a beautiful part of parenting.
There are loads of theme parks in the United States, from huge parks like Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Studios to smaller regional theme parks like Story Land in New Hampshire. You can definitely find one that will fit into your budget and family plans. Amusement parks are also a great option.
If you have older kids, you may find that they also love theme parks. Instead of being interested in characters, however, they may prefer the thrill rides. My kids absolutely love the thrill rides at Busch Gardens , for instance.
You don’t have to plan an entire theme park vacation, however. There are lots of family vacation destinations where you can just incorporate a day or two at a theme park or amusement park, and then spend the rest of the time doing something else.
Considering a Walt Disney World vacation but overwhelmed by planning? We have lots of tips for families visiting Walt Disney World , check them out here.
City Vacation Ideas
Cities are filled with delicious restaurants, beautiful parks, historic sites, outdoor activities, and world-class museums, making them great places to visit with kids. We like to visit New York City at least once every few years, and the kids love seeing shows and exploring everything there is to see. There are also so many fun restaurants in New York City for the whole family to enjoy and even if it rains, there’s so much to do .
Our proximity to NYC makes that pretty easy, but New York isn’t the only big city worth visiting with kids. Before planning your big city trip, make sure that the kids are the right age for everything that you want to do since some museums aren’t the most kid-friendly.
Other domestic cities and popular destinations you may want to consider include the following:
- Seattle, Washington
- Washington DC
- Nashville, TN
- San Antonio, TX
- Orlando, FL
- San Francisco, CA
- San Diego, CA
National Park
We haven’t traveled to a National Park yet with our kids, but it’s definitely on our list. National Parks offer so much, from relaxing atmospheres to nature education. If you can’t make it to a National Park, state parks are another great option.
Families that enjoy camping may especially consider visiting a National Park, including Yellowstone National Park, Sequoia , Grand Canyon National Park, Zion , and Glacier National Park. You could even do a Yosemite day trip rather than stay there. Pinnacles National Park is another option.
For inspiration, here’s a list of ideas from TripAdvisor .
Family Vacation Road Trip
Most of us have some great memories of road-tripping with our families. While road trips aren’t always easy, they are such a great way to take a reasonably-priced family vacation. They also help promote family bonding.
Road trips can be a great way to take a more flexible vacation because you won’t need to worry about purchasing flights for a specific time. While you may want to book your hotels, those often have a more flexible cancellation period.
Ski Vacation
I’m not a fan of the cold, but I’ve loved our family ski vacations. They are a great way to enjoy an outdoor activity as a family.
Family ski resorts offer many different family-friendly activities, but you can also consider a day trip to the mountain. If your kids (or you) haven’t skied before, definitely consider ski school or private lessons. My kids have loved their time in ski school and didn’t want to leave.
Like theme park vacations, you may also incorporate skiing into a longer family vacation. You won’t necessarily need to ski every day. See this ski packing list if you are planning a trip.
Beach Vacation
I love the beach, and so our family has experienced many beach vacations . You can also combine your beach vacation with a Caribbean cruise. I prefer visiting a beach resort, which makes things convenient because you can go back to the room whenever you need to.
As much as I love beautiful beaches, I do like to visit a place that has other family attractions in addition to just a nice beach. Even something as simple as mini-golf courses, boat tours, or botanical gardens can be a nice break from spending the whole family trip on the beach.
Guided Tour Family Vacation
Another relaxing vacation idea is a guided, group tour. We’ve been on several Adventures by Disney family vacations, and have loved every one. I enjoyed the relaxing vacation with absolutely no planning responsibilities, while my kids had a great time meeting other kids.
Read more about Adventures by Disney and see links to all of our posts.
Adventure Vacations
When your kids are older, you may consider going on a family adventure vacation . Things like zip lining, horseback riding, and whitewater rafting can easily be incorporated into your regular vacation, or you can choose to take an adventure-filled vacation.
Water Parks
My kids love visiting water parks. Because we live in New England, we don’t have as many opportunities to visit outdoor water parks as we’d like. Luckily, there are some indoor water parks in the area – and we have lots of great places to visit that have water parks.
One of our favorite things to do is to visit a family resort with a water park on the property. These can include water slides, wave pools, raft rides, lazy rivers, and so much more. Of course, this type of vacation can be combined with any other type of trip, since you won’t want to spend a whole week just at the water park.
What types of trips have you taken? Anything that I missed?

Moscow Holiday Packages
What makes Moscow worth a visit are it's colorful and remarkable structures and the warmth of the inviting capital city. Have a tour of the city which is generally known as the ‘Fire Square’.
Best time to visit
In summers, Moscow generally offers a warm climate along with a little downpour. It is a great time to roam around the city in light, cotton clothes and witness many exciting tourist attractions around you. A tour to the Red Square, St. Basil Cathedral, and Kolomenskoye museum on a nice sunny day would be perfect in Moscow city.
The New Year’s Eve in Moscow’s winter is a great deal and is worth witnessing in a visit to the Russian capital. Many games, contests, and Russian cultural traditions take place in Red Square area every year while it is covered in snow. Make sure to pack loads of warm clothes to beat the freezing temperature while you give a tour to Moscow during winters.
Best Way to reach
The one and only way to reach Moscow from India is by air. There are 5 airports in Moscow city out of which 3 are connected to international airports of cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, and Bengaluru through flights.
