Portland, Jamaica is the most underrated parish on the island. Like the rest of Jamaica it often gets overlooked by Ocho Rios , Negril and Montego Bay, but it shouldn’t. There are so many amazing attractions in Portland and it’s more than worth a visit. If you’re ready to explore the side of the island most people don’t here is the ultimate guide to visiting Portland, Jamaica.

tourist attractions in portland jamaica

How to Get to Portland, Jamaica

Portland, Jamaica is on the east side of the island and two and a half hours from Kingston. The airlines that fly into Norman Manley International Airport are American, Jetblue, and Spirit , Delta, Caribbean Airlines, Air Canada, British Airways, Cayman Airways, Copa, and WestJet. You can rent a car at the airport from Alamo , or hire a private shuttle. If you do plan to drive yourself I highly recommend landing with plenty of sunlight left in the day as the roads are pitch black after the sun sets and there are a lot of potholes on the roads in Jamaica. There are two paths from Kingston to Portland, one is along the coastline going through St. Thomas. The other is going through St. Mary’s Parish. Either way if you have service on your cell phone you’ll be able to use GPS to get to your final destination.

Attractions in Portland, Jamaica

Reach falls.

You cannot visit Portland, Jamaica without going to Reach Falls. It’s one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the island. You can hang out at the bottom of the fall or get a guide to help you climb and go to the rabbit hole. I highly recommend doing this as the pathway is gorgeous. You can swim in the natural pools of crystal clear water to get there or walk along the path. Once you get to the rabbit hole you can jump into a hole and come out on the other side. It’s quite thrilling but not scary at all.

Please note it’s closed on Monday’s so plan accordingly. As of June 2019 it cost $10 for adults, $5 for kids, and children 4 and under are free. If you have a Jamaican ID or passport you’ll pay half price.

Winnifred Beach

If you’re looking to relax Winnifred Beach is the place to go. It’s a beach frequented by locals and is a free public beach. There are a few restaurants on the beach in case you get hungry.

Rafting on the Rio Grande

Rafting down the Rio Grande is a must do attractions in Portland, Jamaica. There are two options, you can do a 90 minute round trip raft which only covers part of the rio grande or you can take the two hour one way route. Unless you have a tour guide who can pick you up at the end you’d have to get back to your car on your own with this option. Up to 3 people can ride on each raft so if you have two kids or more you will have to get two rafts.

While there is a Blue Hole in Ocho Rios, this one is different. There are no waterfalls to jump off but the water is as blue as the sky and stunning. You can go rafting here as well although it’s not an official rafting site, rent a kayak or swim in the water.

Frenchman’s Cove

Who doesn’t want to spend the day at a private beach? As the name states Frenchman’s Cove is a cove so it’s not the widest beach. Still it’s beautiful and has a river adjacent to it that runs into the ocean. The river is much colder than the ocean but it’s refreshing on a hot day. It also has a few swings in the river which obviously make for a great photo.

Where to Eat in Portland, Jamaica

Each time I’ve visited Portland my hotel or Airbnb have provided breakfast so I’ve never purchased breakfast here. However, for lunch and dinner here are some of the best places to eat in Portland, Jamaica.

Boston Jerk Center

If you’re looking for the best jerk anything in Jamaica the Boston Jerk Center is the place to eat. It has all the best jerk shops in Portland and you won’t be disappointed! If jerk isn’t your thing you can still find many other options like conch, lobster and fish.

GeeJam sits on a big hill so I suggest eating here for lunch or an early dinner. This way you can enjoy the gorgeous ocean views while you eat. Besides the great ambiance, the food is phenomenal!

It’s best to eat at Frenchman’s Cove the day you spend some time there as there is an entry fee. Still the restaurant right on the beach is very tasty. When you order they will bring a table and chair right to you so you can stay on the beach and enjoy the breeze.

Trident Hotel

The Trident Hotel has two restaurants on site and even if you aren’t staying there you can dine. If you want a nice sit down meal in Portland this is definitely the place to eat.

Where to Stay in Portland, Jamaica

Since Portland, Jamaica doesn’t get as many tourists as other parts of the island you won’t find any all-inclusive resorts here. To be quite honest you won’t find any household name hotels at all and your options for luxury hotels are limited.

Luxury Hotel

If you do want a luxury hotel you’ll want to stay at Trident hotel . The property has 13 villas, each with a private backyard, huge bathroom and shower along with an outdoor tub. There is an infinity pool that overlooks the ocean, spa, movie theater, gym, and playground. There are also two restaurants on site that serve delicious food. We ate here for Father’s Day brunch which also granted us a day pass to stay and enjoy the property for the rest of the day.

Boutique Hotel

If the Trident isn’t in your budget, as it wasn’t in ours there are plenty of boutique hotels to choose from. I’ve previously stayed at the Sea Cliff Resort (pictured below) but I can’t say that I found it worth the $300/night we paid. Still it has air condition and WiFi, which you won’t in all hotels in Portland, Jamaica. Our rate did include breakfast and all the rooms overlooks the ocean. While I haven’t personally stayed at either I have heard good things about GeeJam.

tourist attractions in portland jamaica

The other option for places to stay in Portland, Jamaica is Airbnb. You’ll find quite a few to choose from. We stayed in this Airbnb and while it had amazing views I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it. If you’re driving yourself it’s important to note it’s up a very steep hill and parts of the way up it’s a narrow road on the side of the mountain so if you’re not used to driving on these types of roads you may feel uncomfortable. If you’d be relying on taxis while you could get one to come back to the house getting one to go into town could be difficult. There is also no WiFi or air condition although fans are provided. Nervous about Airbnb? Here are 8 tips to guarantee a great Airbnb experience . If you’re new to Airbnb you can sign up here and save $40 on your first booking.

I hope the attractions in Portland, Jamaica listed has convinced you there is more to Jamaica than Ocho Rios , Negril , and Montego Bay. Portland remains one of my favorite parishes on the island. Another overlooked parish is St. Elizabeth but it’s gorgeous, check out what to do there here . Did you find this article helpful? Please share it!

9 Fun Things To Do in Portland, Jamaica

6 Fun Things to Do in Portland, Jamaica

One of the prettiest of the island’s 14 parishes, Portland, Jamaica is the greenest due to above average rainfall. What really makes this area stand out though is the laid-back vibe, lush countryside and beautiful beaches.

Fun Things to Do in Portland, Jamaica

From the birthplace of Jamaica jerk chicken to the famous Blue Lagoon, there are lots of places of interest in Portland. Located in North East Jamaica, Portland is close to Kingston, the capital.

You can also reach the iconic Blue Mountains easily from Portland parish. The highest mountain range in Jamaica, they are 2,256 metres high.

The best things to do in Portland Jamaica

1. The Blue Lagoon

This Jamaican natural lagoon is a place of outstanding natural beauty. If the Blue Lagoon looks familiar to you that’s because it was featured in the movie of the same name starring Brooke Shields.

This famous Jamaican spot used to be called Blue Hole but the name was changed to match the movie. The color of the water varies from a lush green to turquoise and deep blue, depending on the light and the time of day.

Another thing that makes this tourist attraction so special is the mix of freshwater from streams and salt water from the sea. There are pockets of hot water from the Caribbean sea and cold water from the springs.

This makes it a fun experience to swim in. The Blue Lagoon is a popular place to go rafting, as is the Rio Grande nearby. You can also take a boat ride to nearby Monkey Island, which is uninhabited.

2. Dragon Bay

Another famous movie was shot here – Cocktail with Tom Cruise. The place where he learned how to mix drinks in the film is called Dragon Bay Resort and was once a luxurious hotel.

Dragon Bay was damaged in a hurricane and remained closed for several years but is going to reopen as a new concept hotel in 2019. You can get a good look at Dragon Bay on a boat tour of the Blue Lagoon.

3. Frenchman’s Cove

Frenchman’s Cove Beach is another must-see if you’re visiting Portland. One of the best beaches in Jamaica, it became popular in the 1960s when Garfield Weston, the creator of Fortnum and Mason and Selfridges in London, built a hotel with 18 villas.

Frenchman’s Cove is still a hit with stars today, such as a famous Jamaican runner ;-). Mango trees are dotted around the edges of the beach and there are changing rooms as well as a restaurant.

The rope swings are a lot of fun too. There’s an entry fee of $10 per day which seems pretty reasonable, given the setting and amenities.

4. Other Beaches in Portland

Portland has some of the best white-sand beaches in Jamaica, with white sand and many snorkelling opportunities.

  • Boston Bay – a popular surfing spot, this white-sand beach is five minutes from Port Antonio.
  • Long Bay – the largest beach in Port Antonio, with coconut palms and warm clear waters.
  • San San Beach – on Jamaica’s Northeast coast, this private beach has an entry fee and is a good place for swimming.
  • Winnifred Beach – a public beach with crystal clear water.

5. Port Antonio

The capital of Portland is Port Antonio, and it’s the island’s third largest port from which bananas and coconuts are shipped. Errol Flynn Marina is a charming harbour that’s the perfect place for a stroll.

The famous actor was also known for his eye for the ladies. However, he described this place as “more beautiful than any woman I have ever seen”.

Erroll Flynn was passionate about sailing throughout his life. He first visited Jamaica in 1942.

Erroll and his third wife Patrice moved to Jamaica in 1950. He owned Navy Island and popularized rafting on the Rio Grande.

Fort George was built in 1729 to defend the town against the maroons and also against foreign invasion. The fort barracks are now in the grounds of Titchfield High School. You can still see the Munitions Building, cannons and the defence wall.

6. Boston, Portland – home of Jamaica jerk

The small village of Boston, Portland is the birthplace of Jamaica jerk . It’s thought that the jerk pits used to cook this spicy dish were originally a way for escaped slaves to cook without smoke being detected by potential captors.

These days, the Boston Jerk Centre is a good spot to find authentic jerk chicken, pork, beef, goat and fish. So why is it so spicy? It’s basically down to the Scotch Bonnet Pepper used in the cooking, which is 40 times hotter than a jalapeno!

Jerk chicken is one of the most iconic Jamaican food dishes and popular worldwide. The annual Boston Jerkfest ™ is held in June and features a cook-off, rum and beer tastings as well as live music.

7. I-Scream

After all that spice, you might want something a bit cooling ;-). Head to  I-Scream , in a quaint building on Portland Marina – the ice cream is made using the finest quality ingredients and there are some delicious flavours.

8. Reach Falls

One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Jamaica, Reach Falls is a hidden gem. Originally discovered by runaway slaves, this series of cascades is tucked away in Montane Forrest on the John Crow Mountain Range.

There’s an entry fee to the falls, which have featured in the movie Cocktail with Tom Cruise, as well as in the remake of Lord of the Flies.

9. Rafting on the Rio Grande River

Meaning the big river, the Rio Grande is one of the largest rivers in Jamaica. You can take a raft down the river, piloted by an expert raft captain.

Made from slender bamboo rafts bound together, with an elevated passenger seat, it’s a comfortable way to see the lush parish of Portland. You can even have a go at piloting the raft yourself for a few minutes, supervised by the captain of course.

Hotels in Portland, Jamaica

Kanopi House is an intimate collection of treehouses nestled in six acres of land, just outside Port Antonio. This Jamaican boutique hotel overlooks a quiet bay with direct access to the Blue Lagoon.

This means that guests can enter the lagoon in peace rather than via the crowded general access section. The treehouses themselves are surprisingly large and have an en-suite bathroom. We have to admit this was our first question before booking this quirky hotel.

Some of the treehouses, like Upper Deck where we stayed, also have a separate kitchenette. They’re all equipped with air-con although you could just choose to use the atmospheric ceiling fans instead. Upper Deck is the highest treehouse on the property and the largest at 423 square feet.

Tropical decor at Kanopi House in Jamaica

We’re sure some of you are wondering about creepy crawlies. As luck would have it, there aren’t many in Jamaica and you won’t see spiders or snakes. The most you might see is a few small bugs if you don’t close your shutters at night and leave the light on.

The main treehouse is a lovely spot for lounging on the daybeds and dining, and is a great example of tropical decor done tastefully. Kanopi House is definitely one of the best Port Antonio hotels and staying here is great fun.

Geejam Hotel is also popular for its rock star vibe and The Trident Hotel is another popular choice for its oceanfront location. Alternatively, you can rent a whole private estate. Norse Hill Estate is a vacation rental villa in Port Antonio that accommodates up to 14 guests.

We’ll leave you with an inspiring quote from Errol Flynn:

“My dream of happiness: A quiet spot by the Jamaican seashore looking out at the activity in the ocean, hearing the wind sob with the beauty and the tragedy of everything. Looking out over nine miles of ocean, hearing some happy laughter near-by. Sitting under an almond tree, with the leaf spread over me like an umbrella.”

A Guide to Exploring the Town of Portland in Jamaica

Frenchmans Cove, Portland

Freelance Caribbean Writer

Few places in Jamaica are as beautiful as the parish of Portland. With its lush green countryside and beautiful beaches, rivers, and caves, it has the reputation of being one of the most scenic and peaceful towns in Jamaica. The parish extends from the highest peaks of the Blue Mountains and is known for its rich history. Port Antonio, the parish capital, has two harbours, with the western one being home to Navy Island, once owned by Errol Flynn . Here’s our guide to exploring Portland.

Places to stay.

Since Hollywood movie star Errol Flynn became a resident of Portland, the parish became one of the most popular spots in Jamaica among celebrities and tourists. Trident Port Antonio Hotel , once owned by Flynn, is one of the best luxury villas in Jamaica. The hotel offers 13 oceanfront villas, each with its own pool, and retreats that blend modern design with 1950s and ’60s décor. In addition to ground transfers, the hotel can also arrange for plane transfers to and from the hotel, as well as helicopter transfers directly to the hotel.

The Trident Hotel

Other places to stay include luxury resorts such as Geejam Hotel and the Jamaica Palace Hotel . Cosy guesthouses are also available in the parish, like the unique clifftop guesthouse Great Huts Resort , or the Pimento Lodge Hideaway Resort .

Things to do

A popular beach featured in international movies and a Jamaican gem among tourists and locals alike is Frenchman’s Cove . The beach is known for its isolated scenic cove, swings that hang from branches above the water and freshwater river emptying into the sea (which makes the seawater colder here than most other beaches in Jamaica). Frenchman’s Cove is a popular spot among Hollywood stars and tourists who visit the island.

Jamaica’s Blue Hole, also known as the Blue Lagoon, is another popular spot in Portland. Made famous by several movies, this waterhole is fed by underground freshwater springs and is said to be bottomless. It is actually approximately 200 feet (60 metres) deep.

Blue Lagoon, Jamaica

Guests often go rafting on the Blue Lagoon or nearby on the Rio Grande, one of Jamaica’s largest rivers. Made popular by Errol Flynn in the 1950s, bamboo rafts are used to transport tourists downriver through the beautiful Rio Grande Valley.

Food and drink

Portland is one of the best places in Jamaica for seafood . Cynthia’s Restaurant at Winnifred Beach in Portland is the parish’s best-kept secret. At Cynthia’s you can find the best seafood in all of Portland, including their famous lobster specials.

Portland is also home of the world-famous jerk chicken . The Maroons from Africa who lived in Portland invested in the ‘jerk’ style of cooking and popularized jerk chicken, now the most famous Jamaican meal. Portland has a range of jerk centres that offer not just jerk chicken, but a variety of jerk meals.

Jerk chicken is a world-famous Jamaican specialty

Being the home of jerk chicken, Portland has major cooking events and festivals during the year. The Portland Jerk Festival is one of the most anticipated food festivals in Jamaica and draws the largest crowd to Portland each year. The Port Antonio International Spring Fishing Tournament and Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament are held at the Errol Flynn Marina each year.

Another major event in Portland is the Portland Jamboree, held every year after Independence Week in August. The week-long jamboree features float parades, street dancing, food fairs, live music and much more.

A similar event is Portland Paradise Weekend , a three-day event celebrating the lifestyle, culture and beauty of Portland. This event is held in the first week of December.

13 Best Things to do in Portland Jamaica for families and couples

Disclosure Notice of Everything Zany

Are you wondering what are the things to do in Portland Jamaica? My husband and I went to visit Jamaica for a week and part of our itinerary is to explore the beautiful parish of Portland. Located on the northeastern coast of Jamaica.

Tourism in the Portland region began in Port Antonio in the 1880s. Thanks to it being a major banana port before, people were able to see just how gorgeous this town was, as it still is to date. Port Antonio is popularly known as “Portie” or The Peaceful Parish, as people call the city.

The Portland region became popular with wealthy American tourists up to the 1940s and 50s when it became a glamourous tropical hideaway for Hollywood stars. As the saying goes, you haven’t seen the real Jamaica until you visit Port Antonio and the Portland Parish.

A Travel Guide to Portland Parish, Jamaica

As I was walking down the street, the aroma of Cannabis or more colloquially called as Ganja  permeated the air. It was December but the weather was hot. My Seasonal affective disorder afflicted mind had calmed down and the low key environment had only helped. I carry a paper package with few Red Stripe beers and a jerk chicken lunch box in my hand. I felt people were happy and contented.  There were some familiar and friendly faces in the street.

The previous evening, I had a bad experience, when I had stepped on a bundle of CDs sold by a road side vendor,  as I tried to avoid a puddle of rain water. I was imagining the worse but the burly vendor smiled and asked me to walk carefully. I felt embarassed having ruined his day. I insisted on paying for the damages but he graciously asked me to go. I insisted and paid him and walked away. Those are the friendly faces I was coming across.  Suddenly something crossed my mind.  I went to him and the other vendors. Sat with them, opened up the package and distributed the Red Stripe beer. I sat in a concrete block and whipped up simple conversations with them. They had previously assumed that I am a Indian Trinidadian.

This is Port Antonio in Portland Parish, an important commercial port for Jamaica neverthless a low key place with friendly, laidback people.

When I had landed in Montego Bay, Jamaica, the previous afternoon, the Christmas eve of 2014, I was not in the best of the moods as the American Airline I flew had misplaced my baggage in Miami. Next day being Christmas, I was told there would be no delivery of the baggage as everything would be closed in Jamaica. But my mood changed in a moment’s notice in Port Antonio. For the next few days, I had only the best of the time,  visiting various places. (covered in detail below)

Why you need to visit Portland Parish, Jamaica

Portland Parish, Jamaica is nestled in the northern corner of the island away from the tourist places like Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negril. It is served by the A4, the primary highway which connects it to Kingston and Port Maria. There are few reasons why one should try visiting Portland Parish rather than other Parishes.

  • It is untouched by tourism yet and you can see only the backpackers and budget travelers there.
  • Best offbeat place for some quiet time though it has attractions rivaling or even exceeding the regular tourist places mentioned above
  • Boston Beach is a surfer’s paradise and especially easy for beginners with good waves but shallow waters. This is where you get some of the best Jerk chicken and Conch soup – in the shacks outside the beach (I had tried Jerk chicken at Scotchies but the chicken here tasted better)
  • Portland Parish has the lowest crime rate in Jamaica. Port Antonio, the capital of Portland Parish is very safe as I used to venture at 12 am in the city when I was there.
  • Once the Ian Fleming International airport develops, the untainted beauty will be gone as the place will be hogged by tourists, not leaving much for travelers.

Bikini Beach, Port Antonio

How to get there?

The best way to get there is to fly into Kingston. Take a public bus from Kingston airport to Half way tree transportation center or take a taxi. Then take a local mini bus for 500 JMD (Jamaican dollars or 5 USD roughly) from half way tree transportation center to Port Antonio. You can get to meet local people and converse with them while having a comfortable journey. It takes roughly 2 ½ hours from Kingston to Port Antonio. If you fly into Montego Bay airport, you can take Knutsford express (http://www.knutsfordexpress.com)  to Kingston (takes about 4 hours) and then continue with the above mentioned option. Remember you have to take a taxi from Knutsford express bus station to Half way tree transportation center.  Understand Knutsford is the booth 15 in Montego Bay airport. It is very comfortable and safe. If you can afford a taxi, it costs roughly around $250 (Contact Gilbert Green, his contact info provided on the side). Or rent a car if you can afford that as it makes it easy to see the Portland Parish. I regretted not renting a car myself. Remember it is a left hand side driving but apply caution while driving.

Boston Bay Beach - some of the island's best jerk meats are available here

Where to stay?

There are lots of Bed and Breakfast places in Port Antonio. Look up airbnb as well. I would personally recommend Dolphin Bay Yoga guesthouse as I had stayed there and easy to get into the city using route taxis (paying 100 JMD one way) and is walkable distance from the guesthouse. Port Antonio is about 2 kms from Dolphin Bay. Tony, the owner, is pretty helpful and  available over phone (19143123504 is his phone no).  Also you have a good caretaker, Josh, who can be your local guide and teach your surfing as well. (8768759252 is his phone no and [email protected] is his email).  If you can whip up a place in Port Antonio, that will work out as well as you can have access to the numerous small restaurants and also hang out in the city in the night, which is perfectly safe. Also there are other places to stay – near Winifreds there are some B&Bs or Boston Bay Beach, if one want to spend time in the beach.

Reach Falls - Pristine, not so touristy as Dunn River Falls

There are numerous restaurants in the city – Port Antonio. If you are in city, eat at the Portland Jerk center by the Texaco gas station/taxi stand/bus stand if you want to have a quick meal (https://www.facebook.com/portlandjerk.centre?fref=ts) . The food was tasty. Be assured that they are open even on Christmas day. So you will not go hungry. But I also would suggest getting to Boston Bay Beach where there are couple of jerk centers and the Boston Jerk (how their Jerk is called) is pretty famous. They have the best jerk chicken and pork. Also try their Conch soup. It is awesome. If you want to have a nice seafood dinner, try Anna Banana (their  page – https://www.facebook.com/WiYardAnnaBanana).

For a  bar, I suggest to checkout Formula’s bar in Boston Bay Beach where Al (18763963347 – Ph and email – [email protected] ), one of the 2 brothers running the bar, double up as a local guide as well. I went to Errol Flynn Marina where you have a poolside bar. Also I checked into a small bar (dirty but ok for me) in front of the Kamal’s supermarket.

There are luxury resorts like Trident Hotel for tourists and if one really wants to splurge there is the Trident Castle like a mile away from Trident Hotel.

Also there are numerous supermarkets where they sell different food items and drinks and you can check them out. I used to frequent this supermarket (Kamal’s) in West street.

Rafting in Blue Lagoon

Tourist attractions

There are good tourist places in Portland Parish.

Reach Falls – similar to Dunn river falls but only better as there are no organized tourism and the hike from down below to the falls is once in a lifetime experience, which I did not feel the same in Dunn river falls. Wear sturdy beach shoes and take a waterproof camera to capture the beauty. Be warned it is a dangerous hike where couple of my guides hurt themselves. Also I suggest wearing flexible knee/elbow pads.

How to get there?  One can hire local guides to take you there. It  is about 45 mins from Port Antonio though it is difficult to get a route taxi and one had to arrange for a private taxi but would need a guide (you can contact Josh or Al mentioned above).

Boston Bay Beach – Boston Bay Beach is one of the best surfing spots in Jamaica with beautiful waves and shallow waters, which makes it easy for beginners to learn surfing. There are couple of surf shops but I would recommend Charlie;s surf store. Charlie is a Rastafarian and a surf instructor and rents out surf boards. He also has in his shop, nice hand carved items, which are excellent souvenirs to take home.(Have attached his contact information). Also hang out with the locals to get a feel of their culture and eat by the Jerk centers(mentioned above in the food section). Also check out if any parties are organized here if you want to experience the Jamaican party atmosphere. Do understand though you would see the locals smoking weed or ganja in public as they are called there, it is still illegal in Jamaica. So exercise caution regarding drugs. There is a bar by the beach to get some quick drinks or check Formula restaurant and bar to spend a quiet evening where you come across other travelers and locals and you can savor a friendly atmosphere.

How to get there? One can get a route taxi from Port Antonio to Boston Bay Beach for 150 JMD. Boston Beach is right on the road.

Winifreds Beach – A quiet beach to hangout with family though I was not impressed much.  I would recommend Boston Bay beach instead as it is much more colorful and equally safe for families. Also it is a rough hike if you do not have a car as you need to walk a distance from the road. How to get there? Get a route taxi to get there from Port Antonio and walk to the beach. If you have a car, you can get right into the beach.

Winifreds Beach - Clean and beautiful beach

Blue Mountain – Blue Mountain, where the famous Jamaican coffee grows is an excellent place to hike. I did not come across organized tours from Portland Parish. So one had to hire local guides and it is pretty pricey. An organized tour can cost you $80(do note it is USD) while a private tour with local guides can cost $150 to $200. But negotiate with the local guides for the prices.

Blue Lagoon – The place where young Brooke Shields made her legendary splash in the movie, Blue Lagoon, and a pretty nice place to chill out, swimming in the lagoon, which has a mix of salt water and fresh water. It used to be called Blue hole but has been named Blue Lagoon once the movie got released and brought fame to the place. Take a waterproof camera to take pics. Also one can try a boat ride or a 45 min rafting for roughly $40 to $60 per trip. Sit there by Tim’s shop(he also plys the rafts) and sip a cold red stripe. Also take your snorkel kit as it is an excellent place for snorkeling.

Rio Grande rafting – It is near to Port Antonio, some 5 kms away between Port Antonio and Port Maria but I would refrain from providing additional input as I did not try the rafting as I had taken the Blue Lagoon rafting.

Josh - My buddy from Dolphin Bay Guesthouse who spent the time with me guiding me around Portland Parish and teaching me surfing - Contact him at Ph: 8768759252 or adrianlewis59@yahoo.com

Port Antonio – Port Antonio itself has attractions like Bikini Beach, where one can sit by a bar and have nice drinks and cherish the beauty. Else get jerk chicken and red striper beer and sit by the murky waters by the bus stand and do some people gazing. Else get sugarcanes sold out there and eat it out while doing people watching.

On left, Charlie, Surf Instructor in Boston Bay Beach. On right, Gilbert, if you need a taxi from Montego Bay Airport.

Other Information

Digicel Office is located in Port Antonio, opposite to the police station where one can get a Digicel Sim card and a prepaid plan.

Cash –  Nova Scotia bank next to the Digicel office provides USD and JMD from its ATM. Also one can exchange USD and other currencies for JMD at the supermarket(Kamal’s) in West street. Do carry an identification document with you.

Souveniers can be bought in the market next to the Kamal’s supermarket in West Strest like I did.

Formula's Bar and Restaurant, Boston Beach. Cool place to hang out and grab a drink in the evening.

Here is Pt 1 of the top 10 attractions in Portland and any one of the attractions on the list could have been number 1. Please do come and visit Portland, Jamaica when the tourism industry reopens.

tourist attractions in portland jamaica

The parish of Portland, located on the eastern side of Jamaica , is one of the most beautiful parishes on the island. Portland is Jamaica’s seventh largest parish with a population of approximately 82,000, 15,000 of whom live in the capital Port Antonio.

Few parishes offer the variety of experiences that Portland does. The parish extends from the highest peaks of the Blue Mountains , 7,402 ft above sea-level, down to the north coast, and is known for its rich history and varied scenery, including little islands , caves, bays, rivers, waterfalls, hills, beaches and villas .

Portland has the highest level of rainfall in the island, which helps explain how it maintains its lush greenness throughout the year.

Port Antonio, the parishes’ capital, has two harbors, with the western one being home to Navy Island, once owned by Errol Flynn.

There are so many things to see and do in Portland, but here is a list to guide you when visiting the parish of Portland:

1. Frenchman's Cove Beach

Frenchman’s Cove, located five miles (eight kilometres) from Port Antonio is one of the most beautiful beaches in Jamaica. The Frenchman’s Cove beach is part of the Frenchman’s Cove Resort , a private estate that is a popular destination for weddings, honeymoons and other special events.

The beach boasts miles of beautiful, white sand and turquoise waters that have attracted visitors to Jamaica for decades. Once a popular hangout spot for the Hollywood “rich and famous” in the 1960’s, its guests included Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Today Frenchman’s Cove is home to European tourists and locals who value the quiet scenic beauty of Portland.

2. Errol Flynn Marina

The Errol Flynn Marina is named after Hollywood actor and former Portland resident Errol Flynn . It is the only marina in the Caribbean that can handle the largest yachts in the world. The Port Authority of Jamaica built the Errol Flynn Marina in 2002 in honor of Flynn’s valuable contribution to the town.

According to local folklore, Flynn’s yacht, Zaca, was washed ashore by a storm while he was travelling in 1942. It was then that he discovered Port Antonio. He described Port Antonio as, ‘the most beautiful woman I have ever laid eyes upon’.

In the early 1950s, Flynn decided to retire from Hollywood and relocated to Port Antonio with his third wife, Patrice Wymore-Flynn , an American actress and singer. Over the years, the impact of their celebrity status helped put the Eastern Parish in Jamaica on the international map.

Errol Flynn popularized trips down rivers on bamboo rafts and contributed to the Hollywood/tourism appeal of the parish.

Because of its beautiful sunset and scenery, locals and tourists have made it a popular spot for weddings and other occasions.

Check out this short interesting video about the Errol Flynn Marina:

3. Winnifred Beach

Winnifred Beach , a public beach, is located between the Blue Lagoon and Boston Bay in Portland. It is nestled in a small sheltered bay between San San Bay and Dragon Bay in the parish of Portland. The surrounding mangroves and forest makes this beach a fairly secluded spot. This beautiful beach is the perfect place to go swimming, sunbathing or to relax and enjoy a tropical Jamaican atmosphere. Located at the bottom of a steep hill, the beach is usually a quiet spot frequented by locals, although on public holidays it can be crazy.

Winnifred Beach is also home to a delightful offshore reef that water-adventurers find perfect for snorkelling and exploring the clear, Jamaican waters.

Food services are available, such as snack shops and small restaurants; picnic tables provide the convenience of eating at this location. Craft shops that sell clothing and jewellery are present which adds to the cultural experience. Bathroom and changing room facilities are available which are ideal if you intend on spending all day at the beach.

4. Boston Jerk Center

If you want to get a taste of authentic jerk chicken or jerk pork, then the Boston Jerk Center in Portland is the place to go. Boston Jerk Center is focused around 7 jerk pits, but jerk, and associated foods, are not the only items for sale there. Fresh fruit juices, or even just fruit, and jewelry are part of the mix, and there's even a resident DJ, DJ Sheppy with his musical shack.

Here is the place to find the jerk closest to how jerk originally tasted, and taste jerk chicken made by the men whose parents/grandparents were the ones responsible for making it a global favorite. Jerk started as being about pork, and breadfruit, and has grown to include not only chicken, but fish, lobster, and conch soup. On some parts of the island, people are now even jerking goat, which is traditionally made into a curry.

5. Folly Mansion

The Folly Ruins is one of the most historical places in Jamaica. Like most historical sites on the island, the two-storey mansion – built on the 90-acre (36-hectare) estate – has an interesting tale associated with it.

Alfred Mitchell, a businessman from Salem, Connecticut, visited Port Antonio with his wife Annie Tiffany, heiress to the Tiffany fortune, in the early 1900's and fell in love with the town. In 1905 they purchased land at Folly Point and constructed an elaborate home. Built as a replica of a Roman villa and boasting 60 rooms, marble floors, glass windows and wooden doors. In addition, the house featured impressive modern conveniences of the day such as a steam-powered generator, electric lights and running water.

After Alfred Mitchell’s death in 1911, Annie Tiffany Mitchell relocated to the United States, selling the property to a new owner. The property changed hands over time and was eventually acquired by the Government of Jamaica.

In 1936, after falling into disrepair, the roof of the mansion collapsed. The ruins of the Folly Mansion, known as Folly Ruins, still stands today and show a glimmer of the original elegance and grandeur.

Beautiful even as ruins, the Folly Mansion has been used as the site for many a photoshoot and music video.

6 Unique Things to do in Portland Jamaica

Visiting Portland, Jamaica

When Jamaica invited us to visit, we were ecstatic.

Caribbean sun in the dead of winter? Sign us up!

Then we realized the itinerary would focus not on all inclusive resorts in Montego Bay, but a more unplugged, natural getaway in the parish of Portland, on Jamaica’s northeast coast.

We arrived knowing practically nothing about the area and admittedly were slightly concerned about flying into Kingston. We left refreshed, tanned and reinvigorated. If you’re looking for simple, sandy beaches with crystal clear waters and a more authentic, local experience, you’ll love Portland, Jamaica!

Here’s a travel guide to Portland covering the best things to do, when to go and what to eat!

Why Portland?

Most travelers to Jamaica head to the tourist hub in Montego Bay. Repeat visitors might even venture to Negril or Ocho Rios.

But few venture farther east to the coastal parish of Portland… and they’re missing out!

Portland offers the ultimate relaxing getaway, with stunning natural lagoons, fantastic Jamaican cuisine and the simple life: sandy beaches, ice cold Red Caps and relaxers of the plant variety too (if that’s what you’re looking for!)

Whereas a visit to Montego Bay will have you comfortably holed up in your 5 star resort, exploring Portland is much more freeing. Portland is near Jamaica’s capital, Kingston, and is home to Port Antonio, once a thriving banana town, and the lush Blue Mountains.

The beaches here are mostly public, not private, so you can explore as you will. Few places in Jamaica are as beautiful as Portland. With its lush countryside, white sand beaches and gentle lagoons, Portland is one of the most relaxed and beautiful places to visit in Jamaica.

How to Get There

From New York, we flew directly into Kingston Norman Manley International Airport on Jet Blue. Flights were inexpensive and best of all, direct! Set a flight alert here to be notified of upcoming deals.

We opted to head straight to Port Antonio, the parish capital, but you could also base yourself in Jamaica’s capital for a few days, to explore the city and surrounding Blue Mountains.

We hired a driver for the duration of our week, to make getting around easy! Public transportation is possible, but can be slightly tricky as you’ll need to switch buses and will want to stick to daytime hours.

Where to Stay

The island of Jamaica is roughly the size of Connecticut, but it offers almost every kind of accommodation you can imagine. There are the massive luxury resorts and all inclusives in MoBay, family friendly hotels and cruise ships in Ocho Rios and even nudist properties for those who want to free themselves entirely.

In Portland, the atmosphere is much more rustic. Sleepy and lush, you’ll find lots of great bed and breakfasts here (browse and book on Airbnb here ) and for the first part of our trip, this is what we opted for.

But Port Antonio is also home to glitz and glamour. When Hollywood movie star Errol Flynn arrived to Jamaica in the 1940s, he fell in love with Port Antonio, declaring it ‘more beautiful than any woman he had known.’

Two excellent, but very different accommodation options in Portland are:

1 | Trident Hotel – Once owned by Flynn, this is the  most luxury villa in all of Jamaica. With just 13 villas, each not only faces the ocean but comes with a private pool. The property has a fantastic bar and restaurant, private movie theater, and can even arrange helicopter transfers.

Trident is for the design lovers, with sleek 50's and 60's mod style design. We loved it! And so do celebrities like Jay Z, Beyonce, Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise and Peter O'Toole… all of whom have stayed here!

2 | Mocking Bird Hill –  Perched on the edge of a mountain, this lush hotel is surrounded by forest and garden. If you like wildlife, butterflies and birds flitting in and around, this bed and breakfast is for you! Breakfast is made fresh to order every day and our meals here were always excellent.

The Mocking Bird Hill is an eco friendly hotel, so just keep that in mind. While the rooms and bathrooms were slightly dated, it was an unforgettable experience.

The Best Things to Do in Portland, Jamaica

If you’re looking for an alternative to Montego Bay and prefer a relaxed, unplugged getaway, head to Portland on the northeast coast of Jamaica. This parish offers simplicity, sandy beaches and lots of fun!

We spent 1 week in Portland exploring a bit of downtown Kingston and Port Antonio, but also made plenty of time to explore Jamaica’s wonderful waterfalls and beaches.

Here are all the must do activities and beautiful places in Portland, Jamaica!

tourist attractions in portland jamaica

1. Raft Down the Rio Grande

Rafting down the Rio Grande river is one of the most fun things to do in Port Antonio.

Slender bamboo rafts were once the only way to transport bananas from plantation to port. River rafting became a tourist attraction in the 1950s, when Hollywood star and Jamaica lover Errol Flynn saw farmers moving fruit down the river on bamboo rafts, and wanted to try it out.

Today, this is one of the most popular activities on Jamaica and we loved it! The rafts are made out of actual bamboo, which was a unique surprise. Each long raft sits 2 people, while a third raft captain (licensed and experienced) steers the ride.

Grab a friend, make liberal use of the floating raft bar that sells ice cold Red Cap beers and enjoy the afternoon! It’s a leisurely ride (no grand rapids) and a relaxing way to enjoy Jamaica’s lush beauty.

Sher’s Tip: The entire raft ride down the rio grande is about 2 hours long and there’s little shade so make sure to put on sunscreen beforehand! This one is my all time favorite – non tacky, high spf protection and travel size friendly.  We didn’t realize quite how hot it would be on the water and got pretty burned. But you can also dip your toes in the refreshingly cold water or even stop for a swim!

P.S. If you  do  want a turbo charged rafting experience, you’ll want to head to Jamaica’s Rio Bueno . Learn more here .

2. Explore the Blue Lagoon

Equally beautiful is Jamaica’s Blue Lagoon , where you can hire a local to sail you around the bay.

The Blue Lagoon is owned by local billionaire Michael Lee Chin and is free to the public. Rumor says the Blue Lagoon is bottomless and a dragon lives in its depths! In reality, the azure blue watering hole is fed by underground springs and is about 200 feet (60 meters) deep.

Don’t miss swimming here, as the magical water is a unique mix of fresh and salt water. The temperature fluctuates between warm and cold and the teal shades vary throughout the day.

In the back of the lagoon, a pond nicknamed the fountain of youth is said to have magical healing powers that will keep you forever young. That was enough for us to want to visit!

You can tour the lagoon by boat, kayak, raft or just grab a tree vine and jump in! Don’t miss visiting nearby Monkey Island as well by booking a combo Blue Lagoon and Rio Grande Jamaica tour  here.

3. Swim in Frenchman’s Cove

Another Hollywood hotspot? Frenchman’s Cove.

This is perhaps one of the most beautiful beaches in Jamaica, with lush gardens, warm clear waters and an isolated scenic cove with hanging branches that act as swings. A freshwater river bisects the beach, emptying ice cold water into the sea.

Frenchman’s Cove is one of the most stunning sheltered beaches I’ve ever been to. The mouth of the cove has strong waves so kids will love it and meanwhile, parents can take shelter in the quiet bay.

We alternated between splashing on the swings and sunbathing on the beach. The water is a stunning blue green and refreshingly cold for a dip.

Frenchman’s Cove is located on a 45 acre private estate. The property is popular with celebrities and famous guests (even Queen Elizabeth II has visited!) and there’s a great restaurant right on the beach that serves jerk chicken, burgers, fries, etc.

Sher’s Tip: Get here early to avoid the crowds. The water is generally calm in the inner section but certain areas can be deep with a strong current near some of the swings. Grab a Red Stripe, kick back and relax!

Because it’s a private beach, you do have to pay admission and they have chairs and things for rent.

4. Grab Drinks at the Trident Hotel

The Trident Hotel is a luxurious, 5 star property in Portland, Jamaica with modern suites, ocean front views and its own private movie theater.

But this isn’t any old modern hotel. There’s even a quirky 8 bedroom castle on site, with its own pool, helipad and private chapel!

We got drinks at the hotel, explored the property and then had an amazing dinner at Trident Castle. You might have seen on my Instagram that I was seriously swooning over the decor in this place!

5. Eat Dinner at the Mocking Bird

The Mockingbird Hotel  is picturesque, and there’s nothing better than watching the sunset from the rooftop terrace. We had dinner here one night and everything was outstanding!

The Mocking Bird Hill prides itself on fresh ingredients, with a daily changing dinner menu.

From coconut bread to saltfish, bammy, avocado, calaloo and plantains… all the dishes have great flavor, authentic Jamaican ingredients and colorful presentation! Don’t say no if they’re offering slow cooked pork or home made ice cream and mousse on your visit!

If you are looking for a true eco-resort experience, the Mocking Bird Hill has a unique ambiance all it’s own.

6. Head to the Blue Mountains

If you’re a fellow coffee addict (you can find all my favorite  NYC coffee shops here ) then you absolutely have to visit the Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains are the longest mountain range in Jamaica, with cool temperatures, great hiking and beautiful scenery. It’s also where some of the world’s most expensive coffee is grown!

From Kingston, we drove up the winding mountain paths and while the drive took forever (just an hour but it felt longer), once we stepped out of the car and breathed in the refreshing mountain air, it was all worth it.

We were fortunate to be invited into the home of a couple who produces coffee beans for Blue Mountain and got to learn all about the roasting and growing process.

Blue Mountain Estate produces some of the most famous beans in the world, and coffee lovers should absolutely book a day trip tour here !

Sher’s Tip: We spent 2 nights in downtown Kingston after our visit to Portland. A great downtown Kingston property is the Spanish Court hotel . Comfy beds, spacious rooms and beautiful decor make it a relaxing stay. Plus, there’s a great on site restaurant, fabulous drinks and even an outdoor pool!

7. Hike to Reach Falls

Reach Falls is one of of Portland’s local secrets.

The majestic waterfalls has streams of water cascading over smooth limestone and the scenery is stunning. This is one of those places that has 2 prices for entry: the local rate and the tourist rate.

If you’re adventurous, hire a local guide to show you some of Reach Falls’ secrets. There are lots of natural holes in the limestock rocks that have been carved out over time by the force of the water streams. One secret cave, Mandingo Cave, is about a half mile upstream and has a beautiful natural waterfall inside.

There are other underwater caves too, that just the locals know about!

8. Relax at Winnifred Beach

Looking for a beautiful public beach in Jamaica?

Head to Winnifred Beach for a relaxing beach bum day. This secluded beach in Fairy Hill is great for swimming, sun bathing and just all around relaxation. Locals often blast the latest reggae tunes while food shops serve up great authentic Jamaica fare: fresh fish, jerk, lobster and more.

For activities, Winnifred Beach has a pretty coral reef offshore, that’s the perfect spot for snorkeling. Occasionally you can even take a boat ride to Monkey Island or horseback ride on the sand!

tourist attractions in portland jamaica

9. Kayak to Monkey Island

If you have more time in Portland, take a day trip to Monkey Island!

The island itself is tiny, but a visit here is all about getting off the beaten path. You can kayak or raft over, and then hike through the tree canopy. There are swings dangling from the branches and a small sandy beach to relax. It’s a great picture spots and the water is both warm and shallow.

During certain parts of the day, the tide is low enough that you can just wade over in waist high water!  Don’t linger too long or the tide will rise and you’ll have to swim back :)

10. Bust Your Moves at a Dancehall

Ever since I learned about Dancehall in my freshman year World Cultures class, I’ve been wanting to see a proper Jamaican party for myself.

Kingston is home to lots of great dancehalls and promoters will often have dancehall kings and queens in town to promote a particular venue. We heard from locals that Atlantic is one of the most popular spots. Show up late, around 1am, if you want to see the real party start!

11. Explore Folly Ruins

This 2 story mansion is set on a 90 acre estate, but it’s much more than just a historical home.

American millionaire visited Port Antonio in the early 1900s and built this beautiful mansion after falling in love with Port Antonio. Unfortunately, it started to crumble just years after it was built.

No one quite knows why but lots of local legends have different explanations! Some say he built the house for his wife and she broke his heart, so the ‘love mansion’ symbolically fell to pieces.

Best Food in Portland

Portland has 2 famous foods you should try: jerk chicken and seafood!

  • Cynthia’s Restaurant on Winnifred Beach is a local favorite. Stuff your face with seafood and don’t skip their famous lobster special.
  • Jerk chicken was brought over from African Maroons who lived in Portland and is now one of Jamaica’s most famous dishes. There are all types of jerk chicken stalls throughout the parish and most open all day, every day until late in the evening.
  • For the most famous spot, Boston Jerk Center is the place to go. It’s a picturesque spot, since Boston Bay beach has great waves, powder soft sand and an overall scenic vibe. Grab some smokey jerk chicken or jerk pork and chow down. After your meal, you can try surfing, snorkeling and wind surfing! It’s also a very family friendly beach.

And that’s it! How we spent a blissful week in Jamaica.

I have spent a lot of time in Jamaica! I’m from Miami originally and my mom used to work for the airlines, so my friends and I would go on buddy passes then pool our money together in college to get nice suites! Back then Jamaica was really cheap, too LOL. A great list you have here. Thanks for bringing me back to some good memories.

Lots of beautiful sites to see. I have never been to Jamaica. People say it’s dangerous so I never put it on my list.. Rarely have I heard about this side of the story. My first stop would be to enjoy the delicious fare.

My country is not a dangerous place, just like anywhere else we have our problems. But we are a friendly people, we entertain and welcome our visitors. Come you will fall in love, but best of all you will see for yourself a wonderful place and loving people.

My teenage son was just saying how he wanted to see Jamaica one day soon! I can’t wait to show him your travel guide. This may be the start of our summer vacation planning. Loving the Swim & Swing…looks like a piece of heaven right there! Thanks for sharing.

You are so lucky, this place looks amazing. I can’t imagine ever wanted to leave. Those pics are to die for! It looks like somewhere I would want to travel.

Your photos make Portland, Jamaica seem like such a luxurious place. I have been to a few places in the Caribbean but have yet to explore Jamaica and would really like to. Especially the Lagoon. Your photo of it looks so nice and comforting. I can tell that you had a great time.

I have always wanted to take a trip to Jamaica, the views and beaches are amazing. How neat to be able to float down the river on a bamboo raft. I’ll defintely keep your travel guide in mind when we plan our trip!

Can I do all 6 of these please?! Wow, what a gorgeous and amazing place. I definitely would mind spending some time in the blue lagoon or swinging in the cove or anywhere in Portland, Jamaica really! Wow!

That place looks beautiful and your photos are great! I’m always looking for new places to travel to in the Caribbean. Jamaica is definitely on my travel list. Thanks for sharing!

I wish I could be teleported right there, right now especially after all of this snow. My husband’s family is from Jamaica but we’ve never gone as a family. I love Blue Mountain coffee and would relish in enjoying a cup while taking in those stunning views.

I am from Jamaica and I haven’t done half of these as yet. It is however, beautiful to see my country being enjoyed all over.

All great suggestions for 1 of our most beautiful parishes! The renowned Boston Jerk Centre, Reach Falls, Somerset Falls are other few popular Portland spots.

I am from Kingston Jamaica and I visited Port Antonio which is in Portland. I was surprised to know that a lagoon could be so beautifully blue and pretty. I fell in love with Portland and my only regret is that when I lived in Kingston I knew nothing about Portland. I am going back to visit this May 2019. For all tourists visiting Portland, please keep in mind that you must bring something to protect yourself from mosquitoes. I purchased a full sleeping footed pijamas with long sleep to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes- on Amazon. There are lots of rain and lots of swamp which makes this area beautiful because you can see the crabs running around from out of the water holes. You can also visit Winnifred Beach. I am so excited and will be there in May 2019. It is true that Jamaica is experiencing a crime wave but you can still go and enjoy just dont show your money in public and do not bring your jewelery with you. If you need information from a stranger, please trust the older residents. Portland is still a safe place and they are use to getting a lot of tourists. Take care and enjoy

Top things to do in Portland, Jamaica

Jamaica has become an extremely cheap and accessible destination for tourists looking to escape the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives and for those who want to trade skyscrapers for picturesque postcard sunsets. Whether docking in Ocho Rios or enjoying endless rum punch at an all-inclusive, they all come for the beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine and cool island vibes. For such a small island, Jamaica’s massive cultural influence has spread all over the world thanks to the likes of the legendary Bob Marley and track and field superstars like Usain Bolt . As the fourth most visited Caribbean island with almost 2 million visitors annually there’s no denying that Jamaica has something people want. For those of us seeking a different type of escape, one that doesn’t include cheesy tourists traps and overpriced jerk chicken but instead offers a no hassle or hustle, adventurous, naturally lush and laid back lifestyle. For those of us seeking a different type of escape, one that doesn’t include cheesy tourists traps and overpriced jerk chicken but instead offers a no hassle or hustle, adventurous, naturally lush and laid back lifestyle. No I’m not talking about Negril or Montego Bay, this paradise I speak of is the parish of Portland. Port Antonio, the capital located just two hours away from Kingston and is fairly easy to get to by local transportation.

How to get there

The closest airport to Portland is Kingston Norman Manley International. The local way to get there will take about three hours but will only cost you around $8 USD. From the airport you’ll take the #98 bus downtown and then transfer to any bus going to Halfway Tree. The bus will let you off at the Halfway Tree transportation center where you’ll take a local bus to Port Antonio which will drop you off in the center of town. From there take a route taxi to your destination. (Note-It’s best to travel during the day as public transportation is limited at night.)

Where to stay

Trident Hotel Photographs-000

Portland has a lot of private bed and breakfasts that you won’t find on the internet but the good news is there has been an increase of affordable accommodations being listed on sites likes AirBnB and Booking.com. There are also a number of couchsurfers in Portland. Most of the natural attractions in Portland are to the east of Port Antonio and this is also where you’ll find most of the listings from booking sites. Before moving into my apartment in Rural Hill I stayed at Villa Rasta in Long Bay and had a great introduction to real Jamaican living, culture and food. You can find accommodations ranging from 5-star luxury like the Trident and Geejam hotels to more homey guesthouses .

Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon Jamaica water Bayyina Black

The world famous Blue Lagoon is hands down my favorite place in Jamaica. Just 15-minutes east of Port Antonio, it’s mysterious and magical turquoise water (which is mixed with fresh and salt water) gives visitors a unique swimming experience as the water changes from warm to cold in a mere second. One can tour the lagoon and nearby Monkey Island by boat, kayak, or my personal favorite by bamboo raft .

Blue Lagoon Jamaica BAYYINA BLACK rafting

The Blue Lagoon is owned by Portland native and billionaire Michael Lee Chin and is free to the public. Make sure to visit the fountain of youth pond in the back of the lagoon that is said to have healing properties in the water that keeps you forever young.

Reach Falls

Jamaica, Portland, View of Reach Falls

Dunn’s River Falls who? Currently the #1 attraction in Portland rated by Trip Advisor , Reach Falls (sometimes spelled Reich Falls) is located in Manchioneal is a must see. With waters cascading over smooth limestone rocks and surreal natural scenery you’ll want to stay and play in the overflowing pools all day. If you’re looking to discover even more, you can hire a guide to take you about a half mile upstream to Mandingo Cave, which also has a natural waterfall inside.

Reach Falls by Bayyina Black

There are two different prices for entry, the local rate and the tourist rate. Here’s a tip for getting the local rate, make friends with a local and carry them along with you and keep your mouth shut, unless your Jamaican Patois is up to par.

Just down the road from Winnifred Beach is Frenchman’s Cove, a 45-acre private estate that includes a resort, white sandy beach and lush tropical gardens. Frenchman’s Cove was one of Jamaica and the world’s first all-inclusive resorts and has been popular with famous guests, such as Queen Elizabeth II since the 1960s. There is a restaurant right on the beach that serves some of the most delicious orange cake you’ll have around.

Learn to Jerk in Long Bay

african-jerk-chicken

Boston Bay Jerk Center is famous throughout Portland and Jamaica but honestly it’s overrated and overpriced. Even after living in Jamaica for months the best jerk chicken I’ve ever had is still Tony’s in Crown Heights, Brooklyn but I digress. Most of the jerk I’ve had in Jamaica is really dry and just a big disappointment with the exception of Bigga’s at Villa Rasta . Not only do I go there to eat jerk chicken but Bigga, the owner and chef at Villa Rasta also taught me how to jerk chicken. With his special blends of herbs and spices locally made you can learn his secret techniques for serving up juicy and delicious jerk by taking an authentic Jamaican cooking class.

Di Atlantic Entertainment Center

Di-Atlantic

You can’t leave Jamaica without going to a proper dancehall and learning a few moves to show your friends back home. Atlantic as it’s referred to by locals is in Manchioneal and I’m warning you now, is not glamorous at all. When the party starts to really pick up around 1am or so, the real show begins. Often promoters will have guest dancehall queens and dancers come from Kingston to show attendees a good time. Don’t be surprised if you see grandma in there , everyone loves Atlantic.

Passa Passa in Kingston

You’ll fall in love with Portland and it’ll soon become your favorite destination to always come back to.

Attractions in Portland Jamaica Portland, the parish that lies between St. Thomas and St. Mary in the eastern end of the island, is known for its natural beauty. The peace and tranquility one experiences when navigating the parish is enough to have them sell the parish to others so that they too may come and experience the place for themselves. The beauty of the parish, since the early 1950’s, has been showcased in more than 782 film or screen productions. Two of the most popular are Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, a Walt Disney production filmed in 1954 and The Harder They Come by Vista Productions, a Jamaican film in 1972. Scenes from the film "Cocktail" starring Tom Cruise were shot at the bar on the beach at the Dragon Bay Resort. An early film edition of the 1963 version of Lord of the Flies was largely shot at Frenchman's Cove; the 1990 remake by Harry Hook would be filmed largely at Frenchman's Cove and Snow Hill. Rihanna filmed the video for her song 'Man Down' in various locations throughout the parish in April/May 2011. Need a place to stay? Not a problem, as the parish is home to a number of hotels and guest houses all at affordable rates and friendly staff. They are also in close proximity to the lovely beaches, restaurants serving up authentic Jamaican cuisine , and other attractions that make the area a "must visit" when one thinks of vacationing in Jamaica . If you wish to take the hassle out of planning, then you might want to go with an all-inclusive package and enjoy the itinerary set for you. So whether it is to visit the parish during its Jerk Festival, go rafting on the Rio Grande, cool off under the Sommerset Falls , visit the famous Navy Island, hike up to Nanny Town, room at the Great Huts or Paradise Inn Resort or take a swim and relax at the Frenchman’s Cove Beach and Resort, Portland offers a lot more than you will need for an exciting vacation . From rafting to hiking, there's something for everyone. Plus, the natural beauty of the river and its surroundings make it a memorable experience that will be priceless.

The birthplace of river rafting

The Rio Grande has a rich history that dates back to the 1700s. Bananas were transported on bamboo rafts along the river from the rural communities of Portland to the coast for export, as choppy waters prevented the use of boats. Nowadays, it's a popular destination for families and couples.

Begin your tour at Rafter's Rest and float leisurely down the river, guided by a skilled raft captain who will share stories about the river's history and culture. As you revel in the wonders of the Rio Grande River, don't forget to turn your gaze to the skies. The river valley is home to a diverse array of birdlife. From the flamboyant parrots to the graceful egrets and herons, take in the awe and serenity of the impossibly green rainforest around you. Pause along the way for a quick dip, or relax on the riverbanks and savour authentic Jamaican flavours At Miss Belinda's Riverside Restaurant. Delight in authentic and traditional dishes prepared with love, like jerk chicken, escoveitch fish, or ask about bussu soup!

Come back to adventure

For hiking enthusiasts, the Rio Grande valley boasts a network of captivating trails waiting to be explored. Take a hike to Nany Falls, via historic towns that are home to descendants of the Maroons or set your sights on conquering the majestic Blue Mountain Peak, the highest point in Jamaica. The trail leading to the summit offers awe-inspiring vistas, rewarding your efforts with panoramic views of the island. Come back to adventure with each step and immerse yourself in the verdant beauty.

Whether you seek adventure or a tranquil escape, the Rio Grande River beckons with open arms. Its lush beauty, authentic rafting experiences, daring hikes, and vibrant birdlife create a tapestry of unforgettable moments. So, answer the call and come back to wonder at this incredible destination.

Seven Mile Beach, also known as Negril Beach, is one of Jamaica's most beautiful stretches of white sand and aqua sea. Backed by the famous Negril Cliffs, it's also one of the best beaches in Jamaica and a top place to visit for families.

Although it's actually closer to four miles long, the beach extends from Bloody Bay to Long Bay . Tucked within groves of coconut palms, resorts fringe the shore here, from large all-inclusive resorts to smaller boutique properties.

Water sports abound, and snorkelers will find schools of fish swimming in the clear waters. But be prepared for persistent hawkers prowling the beach. There are restrooms and changing rooms on hand, which is a plus for tourists traveling with children.

Blue Hole, Ocho Rios

High in the rainforest-cloaked mountains outside Ocho Rios, the Blue Hole is a series of picturesque waterholes fed by gushing cascades. It's also called Island Gully Falls or the Irie Blue Hole.

Guides lead you around the area, where you can explore the falls and jump off cliffs into the refreshing pools below. The higher up the falls you climb, the less people you will probably encounter, but negotiating the trail can be tricky. The adventure involves clambering over slippery rocks, so appropriate water shoes are recommended.

Visiting these beautiful falls is one of the most popular things to do in Ocho Rios.

Bobsled Jamaica at Rainforest Adventures Mystic Mountain, Ocho Rios

Ready for an adrenaline fix? Head to Rainforest Adventures Mystic Mountain in Ocho Rios. Here, you can zoom down the mountain on Bobsled Jamaica , a single-person roller coaster ride through the forest, or glide through the treetops on ziplines.

You can also enjoy panoramic views of the town and sea on the Sky Explorer , a chairlift ascending the mountain.

Other attractions here include guided nature walks, butterfly and hummingbird gardens, a ropes course, rides, an infinity pool and waterslide, and a climbing wall.

Rose Hall Great House, Montego Bay

Built in 1770, Rose Hall is a restored plantation house with beautiful ocean views. Legendary Annie Palmer (the White Witch) ruled here with cruelty, and met a violent death. Today, her home is adorned with period furniture.

Rose Hall offers several tours . You can choose a day tour, but if you're a fan of ghost stories, opt for the spooky evening tour by candlelight. Guides dressed in character share plenty of spine-chilling tales of ghost sightings, and they'll definitely keep you on your toes. Who knows, you might even see the White Witch herself!

Address: Rose Hall Road, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Doctor's Cave Beach, Montego Bay

One of the best beaches in Montego Bay, Doctor's Cave Beach is an alluring strip of white sand fringed by clear waters.

Changerooms, restaurants, and shops are all available nearby, and you can rent beach equipment here, too. Note that there's a fee to access the beach.

This famous beach actually helped shape the fate of this popular tourist town. In the early 1920s, a famous British osteopath declared that the water had curative powers after swimming here, a claim that began to lure visitors from around the world. Hotels sprouted up, and the area became a thriving tourist destination.

The namesake cave was destroyed by a hurricane in 1932, but the beach is as popular as ever — hanging out here is one of the top things to do in Montego Bay, and it's often crowded with cruise ship passengers.

Rafting the Martha Brae River

Rafting the Martha Brae is one of the most popular things to do in Jamaica for couples. At Martha Brae Rafter's Village, you can glide down a picturesque stretch of the river on bamboo rafts poled by local guides .

This relaxing trip is a great way to soak up some of the tropical scenery, and you can even stop at local vendors along the way to purchase souvenirs or refreshments. Best of all, some of the guides will entertain you during the trip, singing reggae songs or sharing interesting information about the flora and fauna.

This is a popular day trip from Montego Bay (about 37 kilometers away) and Ocho Rios (abut 70 kilometers away). You can also do this from Negril, but it takes about two hours one way to reach the Martha Brae Rafting Village, where the tours launch.

If you're staying in Montego Bay, the Martha Brae private river rafting tour is a great option. It includes pickup and drop-off from and to your hotel or cruise terminal, a tour of a medicinal garden, and a professional guide.

Negril Cliffs

The spectacular Negril Cliffs stand high above the coral-fringed coast on Jamaica's western shore. Rugged and beautiful, these cliffs a great place to visit for a sunset and a popular place for couples.

This stunning locale boasts unimpeded vistas of the crystal-clear water below. Be sure to pack a camera and a swimsuit, as jumping off Negril Cliffs is one of the top things to do in Negril .

The cliffs are also home to some of Negril's most luxurious resorts, like The Caves and The Cliff Hotel . Staying at one of these top resorts makes it easy to explore the cliffs.

If you aren't booked into a clifftop resort, stop in at Rick's Café , a local restaurant that's been serving up fresh local fare and an optimal spot for cliff jumping for over 45 years. This is an ideal spot to watch the sun set, but you may have to fight the crowds for a seat during high season.

Bob Marley Museum | Photo Spirit / Shutterstock.com

For reggae lovers, visiting Jamaica without touring the Bob Marley Museum is akin to traveling to Paris and skipping the Eiffel Tower. You won't need much time to visit the famous musician's former home — an hour or two will do it. Here, you'll see his guitar and other treasured possessions donated by his wife, Rita, as well as his favorite rooms as they were set up during his life.

There's also an 80-seat theater on-site, as well as a record store and a gift shop selling all the Bob Marley paraphernalia you never knew you wanted. Book a "One Love" Tour to gain access to both the museum and the Tuff Gong Recording Studio .

If you're based in Montego Bay, the Bob Marley Museum full-day tour takes care of the transportation for you, and includes an authentic Jamaican lunch.

Insider's tip: Time your visit around lunch, so you can grab a tasty bite at the museum's One Love Café , after your tour.

Mayfield Falls

Nestled in the mountains , about an hour's drive from Negril through rainforest villages, Mayfield Falls & Mineral Springs is a haven for nature lovers.

Here, you'll find two beautiful waterfalls; 21 natural pools ; and a profusion of ferns, tropical flowers, and other rainforest flora. Butterflies and birds flit through the lush foliage, and thatched riverside gazebos beckon for pit stops.

You can choose between a guided hike along the river or you can wade through the cool waters, clambering over slick boulders, jumping off cliffs, and relaxing under the cascades.

Be sure to bring a camera, and wear water shoes and swimwear.

Reach Falls

A hidden gem, Reach Falls are among Jamaica's prettiest waterfalls . They lie tucked in the Montane Forest of the John Crow Mountain Range, near Port Antonio. A gentle hike through tropical rainforest takes you to the top of the falls where a lifeguard patrols.

You can stand under the streaming cascades, explore underwater caves , and swim in the fern-fringed waters surrounded by rainforest — more than 20 different species of ferns grow in this emerald forest.

Keep an eye out, too, for some of the many species of birds here, including yellow-billed parrots. It's also a good idea to bring water shoes.

Port Antonio

Set between mountains and a double harbor, Port Antonio exudes the relaxed charm of a sleepy fishing village. Once a center for banana export, the area is distinctly less commercial than the other resort towns.

Activities: Popular things to do in Port Antonio include hiking jungle trails, rafting the Rio Grande, taking a tour to Reach Falls, and snorkeling and diving the coral reefs. A favorite swimming spot is the beautiful 60-meter-deep Blue Lagoon, fed by freshwater springs.

Other highlights of the area include the 18th-century British stronghold of Fort George and beautiful Frenchman's Cove, where a fish-filled river flows into the sea.

Port Antonio beaches are a wonderful mix of white sand, shallow waters, and lush outcroppings of land. But if you prefer to take a dip in freshwater, the nearby Daniel's River plunges through a gorge of natural rock in a series of cascades and pools known as Somerset Falls .

Set between Port Antonio's two harbors and reached by ferry, Navy Island was once owned by movie swashbuckler Errol Flynn. Today, the island is a favorite for picnics and day trips.

Jamaica's spicy "jerk-style" of cooking originated in the region and some of the best can be found at Boston Beach east of Port Antonio.

YS Falls

Fringed with mangroves, the Black River is the longest river in Jamaica , and you can tour this tranquil river on a guided boat tour .

Nature lovers will be in heaven. Crocodiles and more than 100 species of birds, including herons and snowy egrets, are among the critters that make their home here, and you can learn all about the area's ecology and history during the tour.

YS Falls: A short drive away and often combined with the Black River for tours, the beautiful YS Falls are Jamaica's largest cascades. If you're looking for things to do in Jamaica with kids, this is a top choice. Some of the seven waterfalls flow into peaceful natural pools, which are lovely for a dip on a hot day. One of the pools is suitable for children as well.

You can also play Tarzan on the rope swing and plunge into a wading pool below fed by natural springs. Ziplining and river tubing are also available.

If you're staying in Negril, the seven-hour Black River Safari and YS Falls Tour takes you to both these popular Jamaica attractions. It includes a guided boat tour down the river and a visit to the falls with time to splash and swim, as well as entrance fees and hotel pickup and drop-off.

Zipline Adventure Tours

Outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers can test their skills kayaking and ziplining as they explore the Great River.

Two-hour guided tours take guests kayaking through rolling rapids and calm waters, or ziplining above the river for a little adrenaline-infused adventure. A tour guide gives a safety and equipment briefing and offers insight into the wildlife and vegetation along the river.

The Jamaica Zipline and Kayak Adventure Tour, which departs from hotels in Negril and Montego Bay, includes hotel pickup and drop-off, lunch, equipment, a guide, and basic instruction. Participants must be at least six years of age.

Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park

In 2015, the spectacular Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park was inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites for its rich natural and cultural heritage.

Once a refuge for former slaves and the Indigenous Taino, who fled here to escape slavery, this unspoiled preserve offers breathtaking scenery . Within its borders, you can explore jungle-clad mountains, waterfalls, lush rainforests, and coffee plantations.

The wildlife is also impressive. More than 800 species of endemic plants, 200 species of birds, and the world's second largest butterfly live within the park.

Getting around the park can be an adventure in itself. The roads and tracks are rough — especially after rain — so 4WD vehicles and/or experienced guides are highly recommended.

A highlight of a visit here is the hike (or mule ride) up Jamaica's highest peak, 2,256-meter-high Blue Mountain Peak. This two-day trip offers thrilling views, and on a clear day, you can see all the way to Cuba. Most sightseeing tours depart from Kingston.

A bamboo raft on the Rio Grande River

If you're looking for a stress detox, sign up for a rafting trip down the beautiful Rio Grande River. Few activities could be more relaxing than floating gently down a lush jungle river, poled by an expert guide. This stretch of water also tends to be less crowded than the Martha Brae.

You can purchase ice-cold refreshments to take with you, then sit back and relax. Tropical rainforest drifts by as your friendly guide nudges you along the crystal-clear waters, sharing stories about the area while negotiating the gentle rapids with ease.

Rafting here dates back to around 1911, when banana farmers in the Rio Grande Valley used to transport their bananas along the river, and you'll learn about this history on your tour. Along the way, you'll stop for a hearty lunch at a local restaurant.

The tour takes about two and a half hours.

Falmouth

Surrounded by sugar estates and cattle land, Falmouth is one of the Caribbean's best-preserved Georgian towns . Once a leading port, the town offers excellent examples of 19th-century Georgian architecture, including a faithful restoration of the courthouse.

Greenwood Great House is a major tourist attraction in the area. Built in 1790 by Richard Barrett, a relative of poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the Great House is now a museum with period furniture and a rare collection of musical instruments and Wedgwood china.

Other popular things to do in Falmouth include exploring Good Hope , an old-established coconut and sugar plantation built in 1755, and basking on Red Stripe and Burwood Beach .

East of Falmouth is the Luminous Lagoon , named for its marine phosphorescence.

Aerial view of Devon House in Kingston

At the foot of the Blue Mountains, Jamaica's busy capital city offers a cosmopolitan contrast to the island's relaxed pace. Gritty and rough around the edges, Kingston can be intimidating, but you can experience some of the top things to do in Kingston on organized tours.

One of the most popular places to visit is the Bob Marley Museum , at the reggae superstar's former home. Reggae fans can also visit the Trench Town Culture Yard Museum in the ghetto where reggae music was born.

Other favorite attractions in Kingston include historic mansions, like Devon House , as well as museums such as the excellent National Gallery and the Natural History Museum .

Music concerts are often staged at Emancipation Park, a palm-studded green space in the middle of the city, and National Heroes Park features statues of leading players of Jamaican history and independence.

At the tip of the peninsula surrounding Kingston Harbor lies the community of Port Royal , the focus of British fortification in the late 17th century.

The best time to visit Jamaica is from November through March, when rainfall is low and the days are warm and typically sunny. The risk of hurricanes is at its lowest during this time of year, but prices will be at their highest - especially during the holiday season. Jamaica is known for its many all-inclusive resorts, so you can compare prices and amenities throughout the island without worrying about additional, unexpected, costs. The weather is ideal in Jamaica from November through March, with little rainfall and picturesque days.

Since this is the best time to visit Jamaica, be prepared for large crowds of tourists at the beaches and restaurants, and limited availability at the resorts. If you travel during this time, you will want to book excursions in advance to make sure they are not full on the days that you prefer.

Jamaica offers an impressive range of resorts to suit every type of traveler. You can choose from luxury resorts and family resorts to plantation-style resorts in the lush mountains.

As for location, it depends on your sightseeing priorities as to where you want to base yourself. Montego Bay has everything you need for a fun vacation with the family, including many high-end all-inclusive resorts. Negril typically attracts a younger crowd seeking the silky white sands of its beautiful beaches, and Ocho Rios is cruise ship central, with plenty of package tourists and a solid tourism infrastructure. Seeking a little more serenity? Head to Port Antonio .

Blue Lagoon public-access rights case heads back to court June 17

Dr Devon Taylor (right), president of Jamaica Beach Birthright Environmental Movement (JaBBEM), and attorney Marcus Goffe (second right) along with members of JaBBEM at the Portland Parish Court yesterday.

Blue Lagoon, Portland:

All parties involved in the controversy surrounding beach-access rights to the Blue Lagoon, one of Portland’s premiere tourist attractions, are to return to court on June 17, when the matter will be presented.

In the Portland Parish Court yesterday, Parish Judge Maxine Dennis-McPherson urged attorney Marcus Goffe, who is representing the plaintiffs Wilburne Carr, Cleveland Davis, Alex Minott, and the Jamaica Beach Birthright Environmental Movement (JaBBEM), to ensure that the scope for discussion is met among all parties. This, she said, could also pave the way for mediation and possible solutions.

It is against that background that Dennis-McPherson has granted Goffe and his team more time to complete the discussions and for them to return to court in June for a hearing, after which a trial date may be set for the prolonged matter.

In the case brought by Goffe and his team, the plaintiffs are seeking to gain access rights to the Blue Lagoon, which, according to them, has seen an indefinite closure and blocking of the designated access road as a result of ongoing construction.

Headlines Delivered to Your Inbox

According to Goffe, community residents now have to traverse through a private property to get to the Blue Lagoon, with no guarantee that they will always be able to use that route.

“The road is still being used by the ongoing construction taking place. Access is permitted by an alternative route. But certainly, it is not what it was prior to the roadblock. And that is a concern,” Goffe told The Gleaner yesterday.

“If the public closure gets prolonged, which is going on already for well over a year, and then it turns into some sort of a permanent situation, then that would be a loss of the public’s right to access. The decision by the judge is to allow more time for discussion before we go full speed ahead to trial. So this is a normal part of the court process. Oftentimes we see where there is scope for discussion towards negotiation and settlement.

“Where things can be agreed upon it might be easier and quicker to get solutions that way if the parties are amenable to working things out in that manner. But that is a normal, routine way to explore that avenue before we go full speed to trial. The discussion really surrounds the public-access right and how that right can be preserved, but the finer details will come out in the discussions,” he concluded.

The defendants in the case surrounding access rights to the Blue Lagoon are the Portland Municipal Corporation and the Jamaica National Heritage Trust.
