Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Bergen, norway.

Rows of deep red, burnt orange, and white houses near Bryggen Wharf is one of the top sights in the city. Enjoy a romantic wharfside meal or a cozy coffee there before you visit Bryggens Museum or St. Mary’s Church. Ride a funicular rail to the summit of Mt. Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

Alesund, Norway

On a Norway cruise, you’ll visit the picturesque town of Alesund, frequently cited as one of the country’s most beautiful places to visit. Spend a leisurely day exploring the Art Nouveau District. Hike up nearly 500 steps to Aksla Viewpoint and admire the stunning vistas of the archipelago and breathtaking fjords beyond. The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. Art lovers won’t want to miss seeing Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” in person. When you move on from historic wonders, grab a craft beer or sample local salmon at any of Oslo’s trendy eateries.

Cultural journeys and expeditions

Revel in spectacular blue fjords and mountains... glaciers, waterfalls, idyllic valleys dotted with villages await your gaze.... Explore the fjord country and Norwegian culture both past and present...

Norway's fram museum, chronicling some of norway's most famous and important polar expeditions.

Built to commemorate Norway's participation during the heroic age of exploration, the Fram Museum is filled with the stories and historical artifacts that came out of this period. And located right in the very center of it all is the namesake of the museum itself, Fram, which is actually the name of a wooden polar ship that was used on three historic expeditions, including Roald Amundsen's voyage to Antarctica. Nicknamed the " world's strongest wooden ship", the Fram has been preserved since the mid-1930s and you'll have an opportunity during your visit to board this intrepid vessel and get a glimpse inside a 19th-century sea vessel including its cabins, lounges, cargo hold and engine room.

Tauck Exclusive – Private Grieg Concert

Celebrating grieg with a private piano concert and reception at troldhaugen.

Considered one of the leading pianists and composers of the Romantic era, Bergen's favorite son, Edvard Grieg, brought the musical traditions of his native Norway to international prominence through his work during the second half of the 19th century. Recognized as Norway's national composer, Grieg is a beloved and revered figure throughout his native country – and his home town of Bergen – to this day. On your visit to Troldhaugen, his former home in Bergen (now a museum dedicated to Grieg's life), enjoy an exclusive private piano concert and reception.

Grand Hotel Oslo

For nearly 150 years, a grand experience at an oslo icon.

Everyone deserves to feel grand… like the guest experience you'll have at Grand Hotel Olso, based on true Nordic luxury delivered by a well-trained and enthusiastic international team. Norway's most prestigious luxury hotel first opened its doors in 1874, and has been host to the people of Norway, international guests, world leaders, celebrities and the Nobel Peace Prize laureates ever since.

Jostadlasbreen

A choice of excursions bring you to jostadlasbreen.

Today's excursions across Norway culminate with a stop and view of Jostadlasbreen, the largest glacier on continental Europe. With a total area of 487 square kilometers, this monstrous glacier is home to both Kjendall Glacier and Briksdalbre, one of which you'll have the opportunity to go to today.

Fantastic scenery — the waterfall, mountains, quaint and historic sites, great food onboard the ship, wonderful service on board, and staff were friendly and very competent.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Norway to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may not be accessible during daytime travel.

Ponant Small Ships have a licensed and registered French physician onboard for professional and emergency services, which are available at customary charges. The ship's small infirmary is designed to provide medical care for certain temporary illnesses and accidents, and is not intended to or capable of providing on-going treatment of pre-existing medical conditions.

Ponant Small Ships  are  registered in France. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country. These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting. Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site. It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective. Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain that may, at times, be rocky and muddy, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Therefore, roads and walkways may present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion. Pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in in order to appreciate fully the sometimes challenging terrain.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES: This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey. Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

We regret that we cannot accommodate wheelchairs on this cruise. Guests should bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues. We also cannot provide you with individual assistance for walking, dining or other personal needs. If you need such assistance, you must be accompanied by an able companion who will assist you.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or inside the ship, including inside staterooms. Smoking is only permitted on the outer decks in the designated smoking areas. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey! You can view the reading list  here.

The southern half of  Norway shares in the climactic benefits of the Gulf Stream. The temperate climate has few extremes of heat or cold. The average high temperatures from May through September range from 55 to 75˚F (13 to 24˚C) and the average low temperatures range from 40 to 55˚F (4 to 13˚C). The lowland area around Oslo in Norway is the driest and warmest part of the country in summer. Not only is Bergen the warmest city in Norway, but it is also probably the wettest, averaging approximately 80 in (2,000 mm) per year.

To determine current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov, by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required.

In the ship's main dining room, slacks and a collared shirt are acceptable for  gentlemen, and for women, slacks/skirt and a blouse are appropriate.  We have found, however, that the international mix of travelers on board tend to dress somewhat more formally than one might expect.  Thus, you may prefer to wear a jacket and tie or a cocktail dress for special evenings like the Captain's welcome and farewell dinners aboard your ship and for the special welcome and farewell dinners at the beginning and end of your journey.  For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing swimming shorts, bathing suits, t-shirts, tennis shoes or flip-flops.

To add a fun element to your cruise, your Ponant crew will sometimes hold an impromptu "White Party" or "Black & White" Officers 'Evening aboard your ship.  If you'd like to participate (it's purely voluntary), we encourage you to pack a white, smart-casual outfit for the occasion, with possible black accents such as a belt, scarf, etc.

Valet laundry and dry-cleaning services are available for a fee at the hotels. Onboard, valet laundry and pressing services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the cruise ship other than those prescribed and stocked by the ship's physician.

Hairdryers are available at the hotels and aboard the ship. For safety reasons, curling and clothes irons are not permitted aboard the ship.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for a cruise:

  • Sturdy but comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in (Very Important)
  • Hiking boots for those who choose to hike
  • Water shoes or sneakers for those who choose to kayak or go on the rib boat
  • Rainwear, such as a raincoat and rain hat, plus a collapsible umbrella
  • Long pants, fleece jacket or warm sweater; light sweater for warmer days
  • Warm hat, gloves and socks (it can be cool and windy)
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Sport coat for men (with tie suggested for Captain's dinners) and slacks/dress for women for evening wear
  • White or black and white clothing for possible Officers' Evening aboard ship (see above)
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Pre-moistened towelettes
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  •  Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Prescription medicines (an adequate supply to last your entire journey), and written copies of your prescriptions from your doctor. While it may be possible to refill prescriptions during your journey, the availability of refills cannot be guaranteed. What's more, refilling prescriptions in foreign countries can be difficult and time-consuming.
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

Norwegian fjord cruise.

Dramatic coastal landscapes and fairy-tale Norwegian fjords will greet you when embarking on one of our Norwegian fjord cruises. Our range of voyage and tour options includes something for those who like to explore on their own, or those who like things more organised.

With so many amazing options, choosing where to go in Norway can be a challenge, so we hope our summary helps you find something that suits you.

What is a Norwegian Fjord Cruise?

A fjord cruise in Norway can take you all the way along the long Norwegian coast using the 'Kystruten' Norwegian Coastal ship such as Hurtigruten or Havila, or you could join a 'port-to-port' voyage.

Alternatively, you could do a land-based tour including several short cruises into the picturesque southern or western fjords. Choosing a shorter cruise into the fjords takes you closer to ‘real life’ and eliminates the need for tender transfers to shore. You don't need to sail on a large cruise ship to access all these fjords and little fjord towns with ease. Luggage can be taken care of, and you can slow down with several nights by the fjords in a charming hotel.

There are many modern cruise boats that shuttle day trippers or locals between the different fjord towns. These can be express boats running between larger well-known villages such as Bergen, Aurland, Geirganger and Flåm or more leisurely boats that stop at each dock, when requested by locals. We can arrange tickets for these local boats, take care of your luggage and book your transfers. These cruise boats such as 'Vision of Norway' in the Nærøyfjord often have lovely cafes onboard, large panoramic windows and comfortable seating with cutting edge environmental credentials.

Vision of Norway

The Southern and Western Fjords of Norway

Seven Sisters waterfall- Visit Ålesund & Geiranger - Oddgeir Visnes

Sognefjord - the large fjord above Bergen

In the Sognefjord (Norway’s deepest) you will find the popular fjord-arms of the Nærøyfjord and the Aurlandsfjord, which are visited during the Norway in a Nutshell® excursion or on our private mini-coach tour, Beautiful Norway.

Off the Sognefjord we also find the Fjærlandsfjord stretching north from Balestrand, and which ends just underneath the majestic Jostedal Glacier, Norway’s largest.

Join our 1, 2 or 3-day Sognefjord in a Nutshell® tour and cruise to explore Balestrand and the Fjærlandsfjord.

Hardangerfjord - the large fjord just below Bergen

The Hardangerfjord is Norway’s third largest fjord and is home to a vibrant farming and orchard community. It is more commonly visited on independent Hardangerfjord self-drive tours , as a visit to smaller villages and farms is a highlight. For the active traveller, hiking opportunities abound, and the strenuous day hike up to Trolltunga is spectacular.

The massive Folgefonna Glacier and Norway’s most spectacular waterfall, Vøringsfossen are also found in the Hardangerfjord.

Visit Hardangerfjord - Øystein G. Haara

Lysefjord - a small fjord near Stavanger

The 42-kilometre-long Lysefjord is located in the county of Rogaland, near Haugesund and Stavanger, south in Western Norway. This fjord is not well known but the massive sea cliffs along it are!!

Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen) rises 600 metres up from the inner reaches of the Lysefjord. Joining a day tour from Stavanger, you can either walk to the top or marvel from the fjord below. We also have independent tours that stay near the Pulpit rock - you can cruise below and then relax in a charming hotel along the fjord.

Other significant attractions are the Kjærag Cliff further into the fjord, which is twice as high as Pulpit Rock. Lift your eyes to see Kjæragbolten, a boulder wedged into the crevice more than thousand metres high.

Geirangerfjord - a small fjord near Geiranger

The Geirangerfjord cuts nearly 16 kilometres inland through Norway, and as such provides magnificent fjord vistas. On a cruise into this fjord, you can sail very close to the famous Seven Sisters waterfall and the Suitor, located directly opposite each other on either side of the fjord. Those kayaking from Geiranger can cool down under their gentle spray. 50 Degrees North offers a new minivan tour which visits Geirgangerfjord - Beautiful Norway with a rib boat tour out of Geiranger and lunch.

damir-spanic-1114977-unsplash

Nordfjord - a large fjord near Ålesund and Kalvåg

The glaciers, fjords, sea and mountains in the Nordfjord area have some of the finest scenery Norway has to offer. Even though some of it's villages are the most 'instagrammed' spots of Norway, it isn't a well known fjord and it has been hard to access unless driving.

When is the best time to cruise the South and Western Norwegian fjords:

June through to August is the peak of the Norway cruise season, but small local express boats run all year round.

Fjords in the North

Moving right up North, the Trollfjord in Lofoten offers some of the most beautiful photographic opportunities from the deck of a Hurtigruten ship, or from a fast RIB boat. This dramatic fjord lies above the Arctic Circle, in the midst of the Lofoten Archipelago. You can reach the Trollfjord on a Hurtigruten voyage, or by RIB from the fishing village of Svolvær.

You can also explore the Atlantic Highway, starting from Ålesund and finishing in Trondheim. Our Scenic Norway tour, 'Our Scenic Norway tour', provides you with a driver who navigates two of the most famous Norwegian Scenic Routes. Be amazed by Norway’s most visited tourist road, Trollstigen Road with its eleven magnificent hairpin turns and the Atlantic Highway, famous for its twisting bridges over the coast.

Atlantic Highway Norway

At 50 Degrees North we are all Scandinavians promoting our home region from the heart. Contact us to get expert advice on choosing the Norwegian Fjord Cruise that is right for you.

With careful planning, you could visit them all, and even escape the crowds. Let us show you how to get close to Norway’s most beautiful fjord scenery with our tailor-made itineraries and Norwegian coastal voyages.

Lysefjorden is famous among all adventurers. The toughest climb the 4,444 wooden Flørli stairs. Risk takers have photos taken on Kjerag , which is famous for its rock stuck between two rocky walls. Others prefer to get close to the edge of the 600-metre Preikestolen cliff. However, Lysefjorden is just as impressive from its crystalline waters. Cliffs, waterfalls and green mountains captivate visitors.

Walk around Alesund

Walk around Alesund

The town is by the water and seems to melt into the hills on the horizon. Alesund on Norway's west coast is an attractive place with paved alleys, canals and Art Nouveau buildings. The decoration and paint on the facades make the town special, after it was devastated by a fire in 1904 and rebuilt to meet " Jugendstil " regulations: a unique architectural style.

Visit the Bryggen area of Bergen

Visit the Bryggen area of Bergen

Although Bergen is the second biggest city in Norway, in our imaginations it retains the feel of a northern medieval village. Images of Bryggen 's coloured wooden houses by the port stay in the memory. This district, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, has made an impact on the country's history and even more so on that of the North Sea. From the 14th century, the port joined the Hanseatic League set up by the Germans with regional trading posts up to the Baltic Sea. At that time, the Bryggen area was exclusively for German merchants. It would be a shame to miss out on this charming district before leaving for the fjords.

Dos. Although the Norwegians shake hands to greet each other, they are quick to use informal language.

Don'ts. Civic-mindedness is a cornerstone of life in Norwegian society. Special favours are banned, you sincerely thank anyone you speak to (whether they are a friend or a stranger), you don't queue-jump and there are street patrols to prevent conflict.

Unique features

What if getting rid of all time constraints were the real luxury? The municipal council on Sommarøy Island in the very north of Norway near Trosmo has asked the government to ban time in the summer! This initiative isn't as crazy as it sounds when you realise that the sun doesn't set here for 69 days during midsummer. According to some locals, watches and timetables have actually been got rid of already, meaning it's not uncommon to see children playing and people swimming or mowing the lawn during what's supposed to be night-time.

Essential phrases

Hello / Good evening: Hallo Goodbye: Ha det Welcome: Velkommen Excuse me / Please: Unnskyld meg / Vær så snill Thank you: Tusen takk Yes / No: Ja / Nei My name is...: Jeg heter...

The element of Norwegian cuisine that we are most familiar with is smoked salmon. Although the fish is often prominent on people's plates here, lamb is also well-loved. The animals are reared locally in the fresh air and provide high-quality meat, especially for pinnekjøtt : a rack of lamb or mutton salted in brine or seawater and served at Christmas. Brunost , a brown cheese with a caramel flavour, is also widely eaten.

Myths & legends

Trolls are found again and again in Norse mythology and first appeared in the Middle Ages. These myths were a key part of the Viking religion until Scandinavia's Christianisation. Trolls were most often associated with hostile natural environments foreign to people like oceans, mountains and forests. They therefore symbolised natural forces and the difficulties of living in society, and were fear-inspiring. For example, they were blamed for kidnapping women and children.

In the spotlight

To remove the need for local ferries to come and go between eight of the fjords and to open up a fast road on its west coast, Norway is looking into a huge and innovative floating tunnel and bridge project . This would suit certain large fjords where features like conventional tunnels and suspension bridges can't be built.

Books. Through portraits of four generations of women, A Hundred Years is an example of autobiographical fiction which combines and untangles stories, tragedies and family taboos. Herbjørg Wassmo also depicts the hard lives and combative natures of these mothers with so many more and less wanted children in Nordland: the northernmost region in Norway.

Music. Native to northern Norway and Scandinavia, the Sámi people have long been repressed by successive governments. Their language and culture were only recognised in 1988. For a few years, joik traditional Sámi music has been seeing a renaissance and becoming popular. Young Sámi singers like Marja Mortensson and Elle Márjá Eira pair these emotional and nostalgic songs with contemporary and electronic music.

Film. Directed by Arne Skouen in 1957, Nine Lives is inspired by real events during World War Two. Jan Baalsrud is the only survivor on his ship after a German military attack off the Norwegian coast. Hunted by the Nazis, he tries to reach Sweden: a neutral country in the conflict. Throughout the story, magnificent landscapes are shown: snowy mountains, white plains, fjords and icy cliffs.

Facts and figures

Sognefjord is one of the biggest fjords in Norway, covering 204 kilometres . This makes it the longest in Europe and the second longest in the world after Scoresby Sund in Greenland. With an average width of 4.5 kilometres , it is also the widest fjord in Norway. Its depth varies between 100 and 1,308 metres .

It was most valuable to experience Norway, its capital, the fjords and Bergen, in a short time. This first touch of Norway will lead us to the next tour to know the country further. The package with suggestions was perfect for self-tour. Easy access to the transportation. The hotel locations were perfect for transportation points and attractions. Highly recommended. This was my second experience using Nordic Visitor. I am a very satisfied customer. A few years ago we did a self-drive tour of Iceland that was just amazing. This time we did a train/cruise combo tour of Norway. Once again, I can only say you will have a fantastic experience and you will appreciate the labuor of organising and planning being handled by experts who know what they are doing. The cruises through the fjords were beautiful as were the train trips. We loved the combination of train and boat travel as each offered distinct beauty from a different perspective. The country is truly lovely and we look forward to booking future travel with Nordic Visitor!

Frequently Asked Questions About Fjord Cruise & Train Tours

You may have a few questions about your self-guided fjord and cruise tour, so we’ve gathered the important ones for your convenience. You can also find more information about Norway in our travel guide , or if you want information about payment details and processes, check out our FAQs .

1. How were Norway’s fjords formed?

A fjord is a narrow inlet connected to the sea with steep cliffs and is created when a glacier retreats from land, leaving behind a U-shaped valley that was “cut” or segregated by the ice.

Want some travel inspiration and photos of the fjords? Read our blog on the best Instagram locations in Norway.

2. What is a self-guided tour?

When you travel on a self-guided tour, you travel without a guide or a group. You’re certainly not alone though, as you’re provided with all of your itineraries, tickets, bookings and recommendations. We have a 24-hour emergency helpline as well, so should anything unexpected arise, we’re only a phone call away.

3. What is the best way to see the fjords in Norway?

The fjords were formed during the ice age. Each one is a natural phenomenon that brings travellers from across the world to view its clean waters, steep cliffs and natural wildlife. Named as one of the top places to visit in Northern Europe this year , the best way to discover the fjords really depends on how you like to travel.

Our rail and cruise tours offer you the best of both worlds. You have an expert guide to help you plan your route and bookings, but all of the perks of self-guided travel. These include choosing how much time you want in each area, and having the freedom to add dates and activities within the tour.

Each fjord cruise and train package features iconic rail journeys such as  Norway in a Nutshell® , as well as Norwegian cruise journeys on the equally famous Hurtigruten coastal ferry .

On the other hand, self-drive options are also popular due to the flexibility that comes with our packages. Our driving tours allow you to venture to restaurants and attractions that are further off the beaten path, all in your own time.

If you’d prefer a local guide to show you around, then a small group tour could be the right match for you. Our group tours are unique in that we keep numbers low so that you have more time to spend learning from your guide. We also use smaller minibuses that are more versatile when sightseeing.

However you prefer to see the fjords, you can rely on your travel consultant to help you plan out your Norway holiday and be there each step of the way.

4. What is the best time to cruise the fjords?

Each travel season has pros and cons so there’s no straight answer to this – however we can give you a good idea of what it will be like in Norway during different times, so that you can make the best decision for your trip.

Chasing the northern lights  is understandably on many people's bucket lists. Many travellers head to Northern Norway hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive “dancing” aurora borealis.

The best time to see them is in the autumn and winter seasons, between September and March. So be ready to wrap up warm as these months bring wintry conditions such as snowfall and chilly temperatures.

If you’re keener to experience Norway in milder weather, though, the spring and summer seasons are well-known for long days, " midnight sun ", and warm weather. Perfect if you want those summer snaps of the fjords and the opportunity to join bird watching and kayaking excursions.

Whichever you prefer, we have reliable departure dates and most of our packages can be booked in any month.

Learn more about seeing the northern lights in Norway on our blog on the best time and areas to see them.

5. What is the best fjord in Norway?

No two fjords in Norway are alike as they are naturally formed geological features. The sights from a fjord cruise along Sognefjord will differ greatly to those seen in Geirangerfjord. However, we can recommend the most popular choices that you could see on our rail and cruise packages:

  • Geirangerfjord
  • Nærøyfjord
  • Hardangerfjord
  • Romsdalsfjord

Check out our comprehensive blog article on the most beautiful fjords in Norway for detailed information on which ones may be best for you.

6. Can I choose the arrival date?

Yes, you can choose your preferred arrival date as most of our packages have daily departures. We recommend booking as soon as you can, though, as you will want to secure your ideal dates.

Also, please be aware that we need a few days to confirm bookings. Once we have organised all your travel plans in Norway, and confirmed this via email, then you can book your flight tickets with confidence.

7. Can we add extra nights in some areas?

Our travel consultants understand that you may want more time in the charming fjord villages and cities. You can add days before, during and after the tour. Simply add these on when booking online or if you’ve already booked and want to add dates then contact your dedicated travel consultant as soon possible.

8. How much can we customise a tour?

We appreciate that our customers have travel wishlists when they come to Norway, so we cram as many must-see attractions and insider recommendations as we can into our packages. But you can still add extra days to your trip.

If you have a particular must-do activity, or a must-see place, discuss it with your consultant. We’ll do our best to add it to your itinerary.

Also, our standard  Norway in a Nutshell® itineraries  go from Oslo to Bergen , but you can also travel in the opposite direction. Keep an eye out for links that say, "Looking to start your tour from Bergen instead?" if this is your preference.

9. Are hotels far away from train stations or cruise terminals?

We carefully choose accomodation that’s both comfortable and convenient for our guests. The majority of our hotels are based in the city centre and are within walking distance of the stations. However, your hotel can book a taxi for you to get to the station if that is your preference.

10. What should I pack and wear for a Norwegian fjord cruise?

You should always bring a variety of sensible layers to add or remove when travelling in Norway. The weather can be unpredictable, so don’t forget to pack:

  • A warm jumper or fleece
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Comfortable walking shoes/boots/trainers
  • Warm socks (specifically for winter travel)

An umbrella can also come in handy, and cruise passengers may wish to bring binoculars to see the fjords and the local wildlife better. To get ideas on how to dress well for the Nordic climate, check out our useful packing guide .

Why Royal Caribbean isn't going all in on massive cruise ships despite the wild success of its new Icon of the Seas

  • Royal Caribbean International has unveiled a swath of giant cruise ships over the past few years.
  • Its CEO said its new world's largest ship, the  Icon of the Seas,  is its "best-selling product" ever.
  • But the cruise line doesn't plan on going all in on megaships forever.

Insider Today

Earlier this year, guests at Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay private island were the first to revel at the historic sight of the world's largest cruise ships, Icon of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas, docked side-by-side.

The vessels towered over their communal dock like skyscrapers, casting a dark shadow over their relatively tiny shared pier.

Together, they can accommodate about 19,250 people.

At 1,196 feet long and weighing 248,663 gross tons, the Icon of the Seas is a sight to behold. When it launched in late January, the giant vessel upstaged its eight-foot shorter predecessor, the Wonder of the Seas , as the world's biggest.

At the time, it was no surprise: Every new Royal Caribbean ship seemed to dethrone another Royal Caribbean ship for this title.

But not for long.

The company's smaller ships, important for diverse trips, are aging.

The company is synonymous with its mega vessels. And they've been mega-hits: Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, has repeatedly called the Icon of the Seas the "best-selling product" in the company's history.

Related stories

Royal Caribbean is set to launch four more megaships by 2028 — representing about a third of its total fleet. So far, most of the megaships' scheduled sailings are in the Caribbean.

The other 21 smaller vessels tend to have more specialized itineraries, Patrick Scholes, the managing director of lodging and leisure-equity research at Truist Securities, told Business Insider.

Given their trimmer sizes, these vessels can operate more sailings outside the Caribbean , which often reel in high fares and customer satisfaction for the company, Jay Schneider, the chief product-innovation officer at Royal Caribbean Group, told reporters in January. Think of the Mediterranean, Alaska, and South Pacific itineraries — the latter are especially important as the cruise line continues to ramp up business in Asia.

But these destination-flexible cruise liners are aging as Royal Caribbean continues to unveil their giant counterparts. The company launched its four oldest Vision-class ships, with a maximum 2,730-guest capacity, between 1996 and 1998.

They're tiny and old compared to the 2-month-old, 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas .

Looking ahead, Royal Caribbean plans to return to the basics: smaller cruise ships.

Despite the cruise line's success with mega-vessels, Schneider said Royal Caribbean is now considering a new class of ships that would start "smaller" — noting that he was "careful to say small, but less-than-large."

"The reality is, families want to go on vacations not just in the Western and Eastern Caribbean where a ship like Icon can get into," Schneider said. "They want to stay with our brand and journey to different destinations that require more versatility in ship size."

Desirable destinations such as French Polynesia and Venice, Italy, have limited visiting cruises , including size restrictions, to curb pollution and overcrowding. But, as Schneider said, small-vessel-enabled specialized itineraries are also important to travelers.

Giant mass-market floating resorts also often attract first-time cruisers, enamored by their family-friendly water parks and Broadway-style shows. But after a few good vacations at sea, these no-longer-new-to-cruising guests might start craving quieter ships or more bespoke itineraries.

"Alaska cruises tend not to be the first-time cruiser," Scholes told BI. "I don't really see Icon of the Seas doing a Norwegian Fjord or Alaska trip."

Plus, "there's probably only so much demand for these giant ships," Scholes said.

Royal Caribbean has already succeeded in the first part: bringing in a swath of new cruisers with its megaships. Now, it has to retain them.
